14 Artists Who Need to Tour Australia as Soon as Possible

They often say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but countless australian music fans are holding out hope for some of these musical icons., tyler jenke, tyler jenke's most recent stories.

Australia is often a major touring destination for most artists, but some of the world's biggest names seem to have an aversion to coming down under.

It’s no secret that Australians love their live music. Why, in addition to Melbourne being named the live music capital of the world , Irish icons U2 managed to pull in US $35.7 million from just eight shows in Australia last year. No matter how you slice it, that’s a testament to how much your average Aussie likes a night out with some good tunes.

But spare a thought for some of the most diehard music fans out there who never get a chance to see their favourite acts live. While Aussies never got a chance to see Canadian icons Rush during their lifetime, artists like Madonna and Paul McCartney finally ended local touring droughts of 23 and 24 years, respectively, when they both finally visited a few years back.

However, countless artists remain on the wish-lists of numerous Australian music-lovers. With some of them not visiting for a number of years or even during their entire careers, we’ve decided to take a look at some of the artists who need to add a trip down under to their itineraries, stat!

Frank Ocean

Years Since Last Tour: 7

The story of Frank Ocean’s sole trip to Australia is a bittersweet one, really. Having been named as one of the international acts on Splendour in the Grass’ 2013 lineup, the former Odd Future member was set to be one of the festival’s biggest drawcards. Releasing his Nostalgia, Ultra mixtape in 2011, and sharing  Channel Orange in 2012, things were shaping up to make his Australian visit one for the ages.

Performing in Melbourne on July 25, Ocean kicked off his local tour with a headline show at Festival Hall, but “vocal issues [he] experienced during the show” meant that he was forced to seek medical attention; ultimately leading to the cancellation of his entire tour . This cancellation included a spot on the Splendour in the Grass lineup, and gave Australian fans one lone solo show to remember from his all-too brief visit.

Since then, tour dates have been sporadic at best for the critically-acclaimed musician, leading some to wonder when – if ever – he might return. Thankfully, the release of new music and an impending headline spot on the Coachella lineup indicates that maybe local fans will get another chance to catch him live sometime soon.

Oh, and remember how we said Ocean’s Aussie tour was a bittersweet one? Well, his Splendour cancellation resulted in the call-up of a steadily-rising New Zealand artist named Lorde. We’re not saying this festival appearance was what put her on the path to superstardom , but locals will forever remember seeing Lorde at Splendour before she hit the big-time.

Image of metal icons Metallica

“There are so many people choosing violence and division right now,” Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo said.

In the interest of fairness, this one should be prefaced by saying that it’s not quite Metallica’s fault that we’ve waited seven years for their return, with last year’s planned tour being cancelled due to frontman James Hetfield entering rehab.

For a band like Metallica though, it could almost be expected that it takes them a while to circle back around to country. After all, as one of the most successful metal bands in the world, it’s understandable that their legions of fans around the globe are calling for the group to headline their local stadium. However, the band’s last trek to Australia took place way back in 2013, and while we’re not bitter per se, that  was a total of four North American tours ago.

Having been out on the road on their WorldWired Tour since 2016, Metallica have been busy with close to 200 tour dates around the world. Though they’ve promised a return to Australia at some point, we’re hoping it’ll take place before a new album kicks off a brand new tour cycle.

Image of English rock outfit Radiohead, whose music has crossed paths with gaming

Years Since Last Tour: 8

While Radiohead have played hundreds of critically-acclaimed shows in countries like their native United Kingdom and even the United States, the only thing Australians are united in is a collective dismay at a lack of the band’s local gigs. Touring the country a total of four times since their formation, it took Radiohead over eight years to return after their 2004 tour, with two albums following in the meantime.

Though Thom Yorke and co. haven’t given a reason why Australia so frequently gets a raw deal with their shows, it appears they do like to try and make up for lost time when they finally return, with the group’s frontman famously playing a DJ set to a packed crowd at Sydney’s Goodgod Small Club back in 2012.

At this stage, there’s no word when you can pencil in a return visit, with drummer Philip Selway recently revealing they’d be taking 2020 off to focus on other projects. “This is kind of the year away from Radiohead, but we will pick that up again,” he explained.

Frank Maddocks/Press

System of a Down

When System of a Down announced heir hiatus back in 2006, fans figured that it would just be a handful of years before the group returned to both the live stage and studio in order to resume their usual touring and recording habits. While their 2011 reformation is yet to boast new music , the group’s live return resulted in their third visit to Australia when they headlined the 2012 edition of the Soundwave Festival .

Serving as a stunning return to form for the metal titans, local fans have been left waiting for news of another tour ever since. Considering they’ve been  somewhat consistent with their touring schedule since reuniting, it’s logical to assume that live dates are set to follow at some point. However, since the’ve never done a headline tour of the country, it’s likely we’ll be waiting until Download Festival announces them as headliner in the coming years.

Janelle Monáe

Despite Janelle Monáe having risen to fame throughout much of the last decade, fans have been bumping her tracks ever since the release of her demo record,  The Audition , way back in 2003. While 2010’s The ArchAndroid brought Monáe the widespread success she so deserved, it eventually resulted in her first-ever visit to Australia back in 2012, which took place as part of the Vivid LIVE festival in Sydney.

Now, almost eight years, and one cancelled tour later , fans appear to be no closer to getting the announcement of a return appearance from the artist. With her most recent album, Dirty Computer , being released in 2018, and numerous acting roles taking place since then, it’s logical to assume she might be a bit too busy to book in an Australian tour these days. While a new set of dates being announced seems closer to a dream than a reality, at least we’ve got those amazing memories of May 2012 to tide us over.

Image of Icelandic musician Björk

Years Since Last Tour: 12

It feels as though it’s always been in Björk’s nature to reside somewhere just outside of the spotlight of mainstream publicity. Though her music has constantly been a source of praise and inspiration, her live shows have always felt as though they’re designed to be once-in-a-lifetime affairs. Though her ’90s output resulted in two tours across 1994 and 1996, fans had to wait another 12 years before Björk would return; this time sharing a Big Day Out bill alongside Rage Against The Machine.

Famously, fans at the Sydney leg of the tour found themselves somewhat hard done by, with her festival appearance being cancelled due to vocal issues suffered during a headline gig at the Sydney Opera House. Maybe this is why when Björk Digital made its world premiere at the 2016 Vivid LIVE event in Sydney, the artist actually turned up for a pair of DJ sets , and overlooked the rest of the country.

Though three studio albums have arrived since her last full visit to the country, it remains to be seen when Björk might return for a series of headline shows.

Rage Against the Machine

Just like Björk, the last time Australian fans saw Rage Against the Machine on local soil was thanks to the 2008 Big Day Out festival. Having reformed only one year earlier, many were witnessing something that they thought the might never see, while others treated their performances as the life-changing events they truly were.

Though rumours of new music never came to fruition, the eventual split around 2011 gave birth to Prophets of Rage ; a supergroup featuring three quarters of the group (minus frontman Zack de la Rocha), alongside members of Cypress Hill and Public Enemy.

Although Prophets of Rage did make an Australian appearance for the inaugural Download Festival in 2018, last year brought with it the news that Rage Against the Machine had once again reformed for a series of tour dates in 2020. However, while this impressive list of dates is slowly expanding, Australians are still left wanting in regards to when we might see the giants of political rock.

Image of US indie-rock outfit Guided by Voices

Tony Nelson/Press

Guided by Voices

Years Since Last Tour: 20

If there’s one thing that fans of Ohio indie-rockers Guided by Voices would be painfully aware of, it’s the band’s aversion to touring outside of North America and the UK. In fact, across the 37-year career, the band have barely toured outside of the US, UK, and Canada to the point where most countries boast one solitary visit from the band at some point. Such is the case of Australia, where the group toured in 2000 in support of their 11th album, Do The Collapse .

To be fair, Guided by Voices did split up in 2004, and since 2010 have been relatively consistent with their performances, meaning that the chances of them once again returning to Australia aren’t hopeless. However, with an apparent magnetic attraction to the recording studio rather than the tour bus, it’s unclear when Robert Pollard and his extensive list of collaborators might return to our shores once again.

Image of US punk outfit Rancid

Epitaph Records/Press

Years Since Last Tour: 22

For over two decades now, it’s been painfully obvious that Rancid don’t have any plans to return to Australia. A shame, really, considering that their first two visits between 1996 and 1998 not only remain a highlight of the ’90s for many punk fans, but also resulted in the romance of frontman Tim Armstrong and Australian Brody Dalle . Ultimately, their separation a few years later seemed to sour Armstrong’s view of Australia, even going so far as to label Melbourne (Dalle’s hometown) as a “tropical London” on the Rancid song of the same name.

Now, 22 years on from their last tour of Australia, fans are still wondering if the band may in fact ever return. Though new records have come forth, an apparently misguided attempt at marketing merchandise to their Aussie fans in 2016 resulted in comments stating that the band “obviously don’t give a fuck about [their] fans down here.” Though it’s doubtful that such language has enticed the band to tour here any time soon, it looks as though any hopes of catching Rancid live will involve airfare costs.

Promtional image of Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode

Years Since Last Tour: 26

When Depeche Mode released  Violator – their seventh album – in 1990, the English outfit decided to visit Australia for a two-date promo tour. Unfortunately, singer Dave Gahan strained his voice at the Sydney performance, causing the Melbourne date to be cancelled just as doors were set to open. Making it up to fans a few years later, Depeche Mode returned in support of their follow-up,  Songs of Faith and Devotion , in 1994. Since then though, it appears the group aren’t too keen on adding some more stamps to their passport.

Since 1994, Depeche Mode haven’t exactly been a prolific group (releasing just six albums), though their relentless touring schedule have seen them play shows almost everywhere around the world except Australia. Could it be it’s now been far too long for a return tour? Or could their lack of local dates be due to Martin Gore’s comments in 1994 that “Australia is where [they] are least successful”? Either way, it’s looking like fans holding out for a new Depeche Mode tour are set to be let down yet again.

Garth Brooks

His name is synonymous with country music, he’s one of the best-selling artists of all time, and he boasts an amazing 13 Grammy Awards, but one thing Garth Brooks is seemingly unable to achieve is another Australian tour. Performing down under for the first and only time in 1994 as part of his debut world tour, Brooks’ shows were a massive success, but once this international trek wrapped up, his tour dates were mainly confined to North America.

Even a stint as the Brisbane-born Chris Gaines wasn’t enough to convince Brooks to head back down to Australia. Of course, it’s not just Aussies who have been overlooked, with Brooks’ European fans not seeing him perform live since 1998 either, despite a five-date tour of Ireland being planned – and subsequently cancelled – in 2014. Currently, it seems as though Brooks has no intentions of performing outside of his native US, despite the pleas of his legions of fans.

Play video

Van Morrison

Years Since Last Tour: 35

It says a lot about an artist like Van Morrison when he’s been on the road with remarkable consistency for over 50 years. Unfortunately, the lion’s share of this touring has seen him perform predominantly in the United Kingdom and the US, with Australia’s sole exposure to his music occurring back in 1985.

Arguably one of the hardest-working musicians in the business today, Morrison’s aversion to coming down under seems to stem from the fact that Australia is so far away. In fact, Bluesfest’s Peter Noble claimed in 2014 that a friendly relationship with Morrison’s agent led to the discovery he’s effectively “wasting [his] time” attempting to lure the Northern Ireland icon down to our shores.

At 74 and with 11 tour dates under his belt this year already, it’s clear that Van Morrison has no plans on stopping touring, but if catching him live is on your bucket list, you might want to start looking at flights.

Image of US musician Tom Waits

Years Since Last Tour: 39

When Tom Waits first visited Australia back in 1979, his visit was marred by his now-iconic appearance on  The Don Lane Show which Lane famously claimed “lit up our switchboard for about an hour after the show. And not all with compliments, either.” Two years later, Waits was back, and his month-long tour was just as memorable as the first, with tracks from his 1980 record  Heartattack and Vine on full display.

Since then, it’s been radio silence for his Australian fans, with close to 39 years passing since his last visit. Of course, it’s not as if promoters haven’t been trying to get Waits back down under, with Peter Noble revealing that his frequent attempts to procure the artist had become even less likely in recent years, with the now-70-year-old performer having effectively retired from touring following his last large-scale tour in 2008.

Though he’s not retired altogether (he’s still a semi-active actor ), it’s looking less and less likely that Waits will return to Australia, and even more likely that his diehard fans may have missed their chance to catch him on stage.

Image of English musician Kate Bush

Years Since Last Tour: Never Toured

In all honesty, it’s almost amazing that anyone has managed to see Kate Bush live, really, let alone her Australian fans. Though she first rose to fame with the success of  The Kick Inside in 1978, both this record and her  Lionheart follow-up resulted in 1979’s Tour of Life; her sole live trek to date. In addition to TV performances throughout the US and Europe, these 28 shows were critically-acclaimed, but left Bush exhausted and unwillingly to take her music on the road.

Though one-off performances did follow, it was until 35 years later than fans got another chance to catch Bush performing live, with her 22-date Before the Dawn residency at London’s Hammersmith Apollo. Again, attracting critical acclaim and drawing fans from all over the world, these shows have been her last to date, and the ever-reclusive Bush has made no announcements regarding new music or further performances.

Tom Morello Breaks Silence on Rage Against the Machine’s Halted Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Rage Against the Machine were just two shows into their 2022 Public Service Announcement Tour reunion tour when frontman Zack de la Rocha tore his Achilles tendon during a frenetic rendition of “Bullet in the Head.” He managed to soldier through the rest of the North American leg by sitting on a road case in the center of the stage, but they wound up canceling the remainder of the tour so he could properly heal.

“I hate cancelling shows,” de la Rocha wrote in an October 2022 letter to fans. “I hate disappointing our fans. You have all waited so patiently to see us and that is never lost on me…I hope to see you very soon.”

Where are you calling from? I’m at home in my studio. I’m working on new, exciting music of my own. It’s been a very fruitful period. I’ve been very inspired by my 11-year-old son. I’ve been relegated to being the rhythm guitar player in my family now because my 11-year-old can shred circles around me. I’ve been inspired by him. He’s been writing some riffs, and I’ve been writing some riffs. It’s been fun.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

It would be a great place to be. I certainly think Rage Against the Machine, among a lot of other bands, deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I imagine it’s taken so many ballots since there’s a fair amount of older voters. Some of them probably aren’t used to elements of hip-hop in rock, and many of them probably simply don’t know your music since Rage didn’t have actual Top 40 singles they would have heard on mainstream radio. I won’t speculate. I do know there’s a funny mix of people that do the voting. It’s people that are already in. There’s an age component. There’s a leaning mainstream component as well. I think that Willie Nelson deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and artists from various genres do as well. If you saw any of the Rage Against the Machine shows last summer, you’d be hard-pressed to make an argument against us.

Rage Against the Machine May Be Over, But Tim Commerford Is Just Getting Started

Billy joel is ending one of the longest droughts in music. who’s next, tom morello, amanda palmer, more call on fcc to restore net neutrality and 'protect art'.

It was really great. When I walked out and played the first notes of “Bombtrack,” I could tell the room was hot. There was an anticipation in the air that was pretty powerful. I had all the confidence in the world that we were going to play great. We were very well rehearsed. And I knew the chemistry we had going back to that first rehearsal in August of 1991. That really wasn’t a thing. It was just, “How is it going to translate in this hour in this year?” And it was absolutely decimating.

You incorporated videos that showed police violence and asylum seekers. It brought the show into the present in a very visceral way. That’s right. We had never engaged in any sort of production before. We spent a lot of time with some talented people shooting that footage and assembling a show that had all the raw, visceral, punk power that Rage Against the Machine is known for, but it had a dynamic visual element as well.

So you get to the second show, and Zack injures his foot midway through. What was going through your mind when you realized he was hurt pretty badly? Well, the irony is that I had just recovered from a ruptured Achilles. I was in rehearsals on crutches. I recognized the gait. But Zack toughed it out that night. And for the next 17 shows, he was more compelling as a frontman sitting on a box in the middle of the stage than 99 percent of the frontmen in the history of all time.

Was there any thought of pushing back the rest of the dates after that second show until he recovered? I don’t even recall. It was just making sure that he was all right. We didn’t know what the thing was. I didn’t want to diagnose it. But I had just gone through that. I was familiar with the severity of the injury. I was very proud of him that he soldiered on and completed the leg of the tour.

I saw you guys in Cleveland too and thought it was better with him seated, crazy as that sounds. It allowed him to focus all his energy on the vocals and was just explosive. It was absolutely explosive. It was different and unexpected for the band, and for him as a frontman. It felt, in some ways, almost heightened. And that was in room after room. At the first couple of shows, however, we were like, “What is this going to be like?” The third or fourth show was a festival [the RBC Ottawa Bluesfest] somewhere in Canada in front of about 90,000 people who just went bananas. It felt like the power of the band was undiminished.

You really showed the durability of those songs. Sometimes you hear a song that’s 30 years old and it feels 30 years old. It feels purely a product of the time it came out of. These songs are different. Yeah. I’d go further than that and say those songs feel both sonically and lyrically more relevant now than they ever have. The themes that we weave through the mind, the mash-up of sonics, it didn’t in any way feel nostalgic. It felt like electric and very present in the now.

Many fans presumed the tour would head to Europe as planned, and Zack would continue to sit on the road case until he was able to stand. Why didn’t that happen? Doctor’s orders. I don’t know all the details, but there’s dangers of flying. There’s danger of blood clots and all that. I wasn’t in the room. But it’s not the optimum care to be on the road with a newly ruptured Achilles.

Can I check a couple of boxes surrounding the U.S. tour and some misunderstandings around them? I just want to go through a couple.

Second, in regards to ticket prices: I think by this point, I think everybody is familiar with the awful idea of dynamic ticket pricing. There was that big uproar with Springsteen and this one and that one. Just to reiterate, every ticket for the show was $125 with the exception of about five to 10 percent of tickets, which we did the dynamic ticket prices with, and gave away every cent.

Every penny over $125 went to charities in those cities. In New York City, we raised over a million dollars for activist organization charities. There was a total of about six or seven million raised on that tour in what was basically a Robin Hood tactic. I wanted to say those things out loud since there was a lot of misinformation in the world about those two things.

Right. Clearly, you could have charged more than $125 per ticket and still sold out everywhere. That’s correct. And scalpers are the bane of every band’s existence because it’s some third party that’s just ripping off your fans. We competed with them and served the poorest of the poor in each of the cities where we played.

Once Zack is healed up, can you guys get back on the road? We’ll see. If there is to be any more shows, we will announce it as a band. I don’t know. I know as much as you do, honestly. Right now we’re in a time of healing. I’m in a time of making music and doing a bunch of stuff.

To bring it back to the Hall of Fame conversation, if there never is another show, I think that this tour made the case. It’s not about how much you tour. It’s about what it’s like during those moments when you do. Rage Against the Machine has played 19 shows in the past 12 years. And the resonance of those 19 shows feel, in talking to fans, like those were historical events that further the idea of what that band is like live onstage.

You say you don’t know, but aren’t you in touch with Zack? Are you asking him how he’s doing and whether or not he wants to carry on? The conversations I’ve had with band members since the tour have been about life. It’s hard for me to explain. I understand that in this interview, it’s at the top of your list, your Lord of the Rings checklist. It’s hard to explain, but when you’re in it, it’s never been like that. It’s a band that made three albums of new material, that tours very intermittently. It’s a unicorn in a way. Much of the time, there’s not a position the band is in. You know what I’m saying?

I guess. But you had 38 shows on the books that you canceled. I’m no doctor, but I’d imagine any ruptured Achilles heel would be essentially healed after a year, at least well enough to tour. A lot of fans in Europe, especially ones that had tickets, are really jonesing to see you guys . There are fans everywhere that are jonesing. [ Laughs ] There are fans all over the world. Do Rage Against the Machine fans around the world deserve to see the band? Yes. Of course they do. Would the times benefit from a culturally, spiritually, rocking-ly, potent band like Rage being onstage? Of course. I don’t have news for you on that. I apologize. There’s nothing internal in our discussions that says either yes or no.

Let me phrase it like this then: Are you hopeful there will be shows in the next year or two? [Big, long laugh] My only answer to that is “bless your heart.” [Laugh] Let me say, if there are Rage Against the Machine shows, I will be the guitar player. And of course I would love that! It’s awesome. There’s nothing like that feeling.

Put up the link in your story to “Killing in the Name” from Finsbury Park. Put up “Testify” from The Battle of Santiago. [Both shows took place in 2010.] You can feel it. You can see through a scratchy fan video that there’s never been anything like that in the history of music. There’s nothing like it, man.

So it’s not a hiatus … [Big laugh] I want you to rephrase the question as many ways as you can. [Laughs] I think I said it very clearly. If Rage Against the Machine was going on a hiatus, Rage Against the Machine would say, “We’re going on a hiatus.” That has not happened. I will say that I understand and respect the frustration. There is a sort of frustration to not knowing when you’re in the band! But that’s led to a lot of great music.

I really appreciate you humoring me since I know this is annoying, but why not just call Zack and ask how he’s healing and whether or not he wants to play more shows next year? I know the trajectory of the healing and whatnot. But it’s so hard to describe this, dude. Nineteen shows in 11 years. Three albums in 30 years. It’s different than any other situation you’ve ever interviewed. It has a very, very different dynamic. All I can say is the love I have for those dudes and that music is complete. The honor that it is, or those times we have been onstage together, is like nothing else.

For me, everything from day one, predating Rage Against the Machine, is about the music, and it is about the mission. Those are things that Rage Against the Machine is able to put the hammer down, and do like no other band.

An argument for Rage Against the Machine to get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is that there has never been a band with politics that radical on the top of the charts. It’s not close. It’s not close . That is rarified air. The engine in me doesn’t turn off when Rage isn’t onstage. The album I’m working on now will be my 23rd album. I’m super psyched. I’m going to be playing shows in Chile and Brazil and Italy and Belgium this summer with no less commitment to that music and message than any of the five sold-out nights at Madison Square Garden.

I came home in the middle of the North Hollywood Stripper Club Strike; the only unionized strip club in America is in North Hollywood where strippers are picketing out front. I went and joined their picket line and helped amplify that. Then the United Farm Workers, who I’ve been a fan and supporter of for decades now, were trying to get a bill passed that would allow greater fairness and justice in the world place. I helped with that.

The energizing wave of that tour carried on in a very significant way to help reinvigorate the mission and message of a life’s work that predates Rage Against the Machine in some ways, but was really amplified by the experience of being on that tour, and making the most of it going away.

Tell me more about these upcoming solo shows. It’s a solo tour with my band, the Freedom Fighters Orchestra. It’s places I’ve been dying to get back to since the pandemic, where some of the most passionate and wild fans in the world are, in South America and Italy and places like that. I cannot wait to play.

I saw Jack White play a small show recently in Los Angeles. We have something in common in that we’ve both been in a lot of bands. The way that he weaved and synthesized a life’s work into a very cohesive and compelling whole was very inspiring to me. I was like, “You can take the whole thing and make it all one.” I’ve always sort of segregated a bit, whether it’s the acoustic Nightwatchman stuff or EDM-leaning Atlas Underground stuff. But that was very inspiring. I’m going to be rockin’ South America and Europe.

The Hall of Fame induction is usually around November these days. If Rage does get in, do you think you guys will come and play? I will definitely be there. Beyond that, we haven’t discussed that. That’s really putting the cart before the horse. I would hope so, though.

On the Wikipedia page for Rage, should it say Rage “are a band” or Rage “were a band?” [Big laugh] I would refer to the official Rage Against the Machine statement on that point, in which there’s none! [ Laughs ]

We can leave it there. Sorry I kept grilling you on the state of Rage. I’m sure that was annoying. That’s OK. I was warned that such a grilling was coming. I’ve been one quarter of the owner of the ring for 30 years. I understand the frustration. We just don’t operate like other bands.

After bumping from 2020 to summer 2021, the Zack de la Rocha-led lyrical bomb-throwers will finally take the stage starting July 9 with a kick-off show at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin, before making their way across North America with stops in Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and a five-night stand in New York.

The dates will then pick up again in early 2023 with another round of shows beginning with a Feb. 22 gig at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico. That run of gigs will keep the band on the road through a planned two-night stand in Detroit at Little Caesars Arena in early April.

In a note the band said all tickets for the moved dates will be honored; fans who would prefer a refund have until March 15, 2022.

Rage Against the Machine Reschedule Reunion Tour for 2022

Run the Jewels will provide support for the duration of the outing

Rage Against the Machine Reschedule Reunion Tour for 2022

Rage Against the Machine have rescheduled their reunion tour for 2022.

The hard rock band had been set to embark on their first outing together in a decade beginning in March 2020, but were forced to postpone those plans due to the pandemic. They had initially rescheduled the dates for 2021, but as the live music industry is only now beginning to rev back up, such an expansive outing simply isn’t realistic until next year.

As such, Rage Against the Machine’s “Public Service Announcement Tour” will now kick off March 31st, 2022 in El Paso, Texas. As had been the plan all along, the band will begin the jaunt with a series of shows along the US-Mexico border before making their way across the rest of the US. Run the Jewels are still on board to open every date of the trek.

The 2022 itinerary also includes headlining performances at Ottawa Bluesfest and Festival d’ete de Quebec, though as of now those are the only two festival slots announced. (Their initial itinerary also included appearances at Coachella, Boston Calling, and Firefly Music Festival, plus several shows in Europe.)

Just last month, RATM bassist Tim Commerford declared that the band would never play reduced capacity shows or drive-in gigs , saying, “We’ll never be one of these sellouts that’s gonna go play a drive-in show or play a venue that holds 100,000 people and there’s only 10,000 people there. That’s bullshit. Rage will never do that. It’s not a good show unless the audience is going off, too. It’s gotta be a shared experience.”

Rage Against the Machine no drive-ins

Tim Commerford: Rage Against the Machine Will “Never” Play Drive-In Shows or 10% Capacity Venues

It appears that the band is staying true to Commerford’s promise by pushing the dates to 2022.

Check out RATM’s updated tour schedule below. Tickets will be honored for the postponed shows. If you don’t already have ’em, they’re available to purchase here .

Beasties, Rage Tour Officially Canceled

September 19 -- As was widely anticipated, the Beastie Boys have announced the official cancellation of the "Rhyme & Reason 2000" tour with Rage Against the Machine, citing "insurmountable logistical, scheduling, and health problems" in a statement released today.

The tour, originally scheduled to kick off in August, was postponed after Mike D (n é e Diamond) hit a pothole on his bicycle while riding home from tour rehearsals on Saturday, July 22, in New York City. He was later diagnosed with a fifth-degree acromioclavicular joint dislocation, requiring surgery (which he underwent on Aug. 2), four to six weeks of rest, and intense physical therapy to ensure a full recovery.

"All efforts were made to reschedule the tour but were ultimately unsuccessful due to a confluence of prior commitments, holds, scheduling, the venues in question, and numerous other factors," continues the statement from the Beasties' publicist. "Beastie Boys express profound apologies to all artists, personnel, and, most of all, fans who had been looking forward to the tour."

Refunds for previously scheduled Rhyme & Reason 2000 dates are available at point of purchase or via all Ticketmaster outlets.

How Much Did Zack De La Rocha's Leg Injury Cost The Rage Against The Machine Tour?

Zack de la Rocha suffered a brutal leg injury that meant canceling the rest of the Rage Against The Machine 2022 tour, and it cost the band a lot.

Rage Against The Machine has always been one of the most political bands, and fans thrilled to enjoy live music again in the summer of 2022 were shocked when Zack De La Rocha injured his leg. Rage Against The Machine has some controversial songs but their fanbase is always excited to see what they have to say next. Like many other bands and singers, they had to cancel their summer 2020 tour because of the COVID-19 pandemic. And when they embarked on their Public Service Announcement global tour in the summer of 2022, Zack de la Rocha hurt his leg while playing in Chicago, which was only the second night of the entire tour after East Troy, Wisconsin.

Rage canceled the rest of their tour a little while later. The news of de la Rocha's injury was particularly devastating since the band hadn't played any shows since 2010 and 2011. What did canceling this tour end up costing Rage Against The Machine?

What Was The Financial Cost Of Zack De La Rocha's Leg Injury?

Rage Against The Machine has a huge celeb fanbase and the band has been rocking out and sharing their opinions since they got together in 1991. On August 11th, 2022, the band experienced a terrible time when Rage Against The Machine canceled the rest of their tour that would see them in Europe and the United Kingdom, according to NME.

Forbes reported that these concert dates were supposed to happen in September 2022. In October 2022, the band announced that they would be canceling their tour which would see them traveling throughout North America in 2023. Since canceling a tour is definitely a big deal, what did that actually cost the band?

When a musician or band cancels a tour, they end up losing the money that they would have made from ticket sales. Fans were given refunds, according to the Rage Against The Machine website. Of course, this means that the band didn't receive any of that money. It's hard to know exactly how much money was lost, but given that the band is so popular and fans had been waiting years to see Rage, it seems likely that they would have packed the concert venues that they booked.

The website said that if someone purchased a ticket from AXS or Ticketmaster they would receive a refund. If they used cash, then they should get in touch with whoever they bought the ticket from.

Go Baking Rates offers some comparisons. The Dave Matthews Band moved the tour that was meant to happen in the summer of 2020 to the following summer. With a tour taking place in 49 cities and venues like Uncasville, Connecticut's the Mohegan Sun Arena selling tickets for $102.50, the band could have made a ton of money.

With this particular venue allowing for 10,000 concertgoers, if the band sold all the available tickets, they would have earned $1 million. Go Baking Rates reported that The Dave Matthews Band could have made $49 million based on these numbers.

Snoop Dogg moved his “I Wanna Thank Me” United Kingdom tour from April 2020 to September 2021. The website noted that the singer was supposed to perform at The O2 which has room for 20,000 concertgoers. With tickets being sold for $98.91, that would have been almost $2 million lost, according to Go Baking Rates.

While the exact number of how much money Rage Against The Machine lost isn't known, it's likely that it was millions, given their popularity and the amount of concerts they had lined up.

There is no news about Rage rescheduling any of these tour dates, which suggests that de la Rocha's leg injury is still affecting him. This is really sad news for fans who of course care about his health and want to see him back out there playing music again.

How Did Zack De La Rocha Feel About Canceling The Rest Of The Rage Against The Machine Tour?

Zack de la Rocha said that he had a "severe" tear in his Achilles tendon and he tried to continue the tour by sitting on a monitor, telling the audience, "If I have to crawl across this stage, we’re gonna play for y’all tonight," according to Rolling Stone.

However, it was too painful and a doctor didn't want him to keep going. The band member wrote a statement for fans that the band put on Twitter in the fall of 2022 and he sounded absolutely devastated to have to cancel these shows.

He wrote, "I hate cancelling shows. I hate disappointing our fans. You have all waited so patiently to see us and that is never lost on me. I never take that for granted. For you I have the ultimate gratitude and respect."

The singer also noted all the hard work that Rage Against The Machine had put into the tour so far and the craft that they have been honing for so many decades.

He also said, “It's been almost three months since Chicago and I still look down at my leg in disbelief. Two years of waiting through the pandemic hoping we would have an opening to be a band again and continue the work we started 30 some odd years ago. Rehearsing, training, reconciling, working our way back to form. Then one-and-a-half shows into it and my tendon tears. Felt like a sick joke the universe played on me."

Zack de la Rosa Was Injured During A Rage The Machine Concert In 1997

According to Rolling Stone, de la Rosa sustained an ankle injury when Rage Against The Machine performed in East Rutherford, New Jersey on August 20th, 1997. When the band played "Bombtrack," he hopped upon a speaker and injured himself.

That injury was much less serious, and an MTV.com story called "Rage Tour Rocks On Despite Singer's Sprained Ankle" shared that the band didn't have to cancel their tour. When they played at the Great Woods Amphitheater in Boston, however, they were three hours late because he saw a doctor and made sure that everything was okay.

In contrast, a torn Achilles tendon is much more challenging to recover from. According to The Mayo Clinic, those who suffer from this injury are likely better within a period of four to six months, and they can do the things that they used to. The website mentioned that physical therapy is important and that the total recovery time could be one year as people will still have some issues.
