Southampton is widely recognised as the cruise capital of Europe. The Port of Southampton plays host to a wide variety of cruise lines, including P&O Cruises, Cunard, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Princess Cruises, and welcomes more than two million passengers to the city each year.

There has also been several new ships entering the waters with sailing out of the city. Since spring 2020, P&O Cruises’ Iona, the largest-ever ship purpose-built for the UK market, has been based in its homeport of Southampton. In December 2022, Southampton also saw the launch of Arvia which also has had several sailings out of the city.

Everything you need to know about P&O's Britannia as ship sets sail

Author: Harriet Mallinson

Published on: 28 June 2021

Updated on: 31 August 2022

P&O Cruises marked an exciting step forward yesterday as cruise ship Britannia sailed from Southampton. This is everything you need to know about the liner.

P&O Cruises vessel Britannia sailed on its first UK cruise on Sunday as the beloved line returned to the sea.

The liner celebrated with a horn-sounding departure salute as the ship left Southampton at 6pm.

The 330m ship carries 3,647 guests; however, only 1,000 passengers are allowed to sail on cruise ships until July 19 due to Covid limits.

Perks of sailing on Britannia include The White Company toiletries, an adult-only luxurious open deck area at The Retreat and a hydrotherapy suite at the opulent Oasis Spa and Salon, to name just a few.

This is everything you need to know about Britannia.

The P&O cruise ship is sailing the UK this summer on a series of three, four and seven-night UK coastal cruises before starting its planned western Mediterranean itineraries on September 25.

Barcelona, Cannes, Florence and Rome are just some of the ports of call.

In the winter, Britannia heads to the Caribbean for some winter sun so guests can visit everywhere from the salt flats and flamingoes of Curaçao to the waterfalls and volcanos of St Lucia.

Britannia cabins

The boutique-style cabins on Britannia are stylish and comfortable featuring soothing colours, bespoke artworks from British artists and large flatscreen TVs for films on demand.

All outside rooms have balconies and there are 27 single cabins, many of which have balconies.

Balcony cabins see holidaymakers stepping out into their private space where they can dine throughout the day and unwind in the ultimate room with a view.

The spacious Mini-Suites come with added luxuries including comfy sofas, while butler-serviced Suites feature a lounge for entertaining, a dressing area and broad balcony with steamer loungers.

Britannia dining

Britannia offers a wide range of restaurants from informal eateries to chic dining spots.

Guests can eat at any time at Horizon buffet while Poolside pizzeria and grill and Market cafe are other relaxed options.

Travellers can enjoy contemporary flavours. Sindhu showcases an elegant fusion of Indian and British cuisine featuring sublime flavours while The Glass House is the perfect spot for light bites and lunchtime tipples.

Guest can also eat while being treated to a feast - The Limelight Club offers a three-course culinary experience while you watch thrilling performances.

Meanwhile at The Cookery Club passengers can get hands-on in Britannia's state-of-the-art kitchen. You could even learn from Marco Pierre White who holds hosted masterclasses and hosted dinners when he’s onboard.

If you fancy something special, there's The Epicurean where dishes are inspired by classic British ingredients and given a modern twist by expert chefs.

Britannia entertainment

The Limelight Club puts on a show-stopper of an evening exclusively for adults. Feast your senses on entertainment provided by some of Britain’s best-loved performers: comedy musical act 4 Poofs and a Piano, cabaret queen La Voix and ex-The Wanted singer Max George.

The Atrium hosts relaxed entertainment and a lively scene with music and informal performances.

Headliners Theatre offers music, dance and spectacular production techniques. The shows, created by industry-leading producers and choreographers and performed by the stars of P&O's own on-shore production company, The Academy, are not to be missed.

The Live Lounge is the perfect spot for a nightcap with music and dancing on the menu.

P&O Cruises from Southampton

2024, 2025, 2026 & 2027 cruises from southampton.

Want to know which P&O Cruises ships cruise from Southampton? All of them! P&O Cruises fleet comprises of seven cruise ships – Adult only Aurora  & Arcadia , family friendly Azura , Britannia  & Ventura .

Then there’s the newest ships: Iona – designed to bring you the best experience of the Norwegian Fjords in Summer, and the Canary Islands in Winter. Arvia – built for the sunshine of the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

With so much variety on a P&O Cruises holiday, every moment brings something new. From Bermuda shorts and bikinis by the swimming pools on a sunny day at sea, featuring endless ocean views; to black ties, ball gowns and fine dining on gala evenings, there’s something for everyone on a P&O Cruises holiday. Sun-soaked days and sumptuous dinners, breezy morning treks and lazy afternoons with a cocktail or two. It’s all waiting for you… from instagrammable sunsets and live music on deck to the promise of new flavours, sights and sounds ashore.

Cruise from Southampton, or choose one of their worldwide fly-cruise adventures, with sailings available right through to Winter 2026/27!

On our website we’ll always show you the cheapest fare first, which, where available, will more than likely be the Early Saver fare. Please ask our cruise specialists for details and availability of any other P&O Cruises fares.

The fares explained:

Select Price

This price gives you the most choice and flexibility. • Choice of cabin location and first priority for upgrades (subject to availability) • First priority for dining style on ships offering both freedom and Club Dining, and first priority for seating time and table size for Club Dining • A choice of on-board spending money, car parking in Southampton or return coach travel to Southampton* • Shuttle buses in port (where they are provided by P&O Cruises) • Flexibility to change your booking

Early Saver

Early Saver offers a great price but without the benefits of Select Price. • Available on selected grades of cabin (we’ll assign your cabin number) • Possible upgrades (where and if available, after non-Saver bookings) • Flexibility required for your desired dining style, dining time and table size in the main restaurant • Flexibility to change your booking

Saver is a last chance for deal-seekers to get a last-minute holiday with P&O Cruises • Only available on selected cruises, at selected times • Only available on selected cabin grades (we’ll assign your cabin number, which once allocated cannot be changed) • Dining allocated upon boarding • Full balance to be paid at the time of booking • 100% cancellation fee if cancelled at any time before sail date

If you’re looking for something a little different, then why not ask us about themed cruises, such as Christmas-time getaway, or a culinary sailing with one of P&O Cruises Food Heroes, like Marco Pierre White or Olly Smith, aboard.

All Inclusive?

P&O Cruises offer full board dining as standard, and already include gratuities in the cruise fare (so there are no surprises at the end of your holiday or awkwardness when it comes to tipping). Fancy taking care of the bar bill before you’ve travelled? P&O Cruises offer a range of drinks packages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) to ensure you’re refreshed at sea without wondering whether you could afford one more coffee or cocktail. And whether you’re making friends and family at home jealous with updates from your adventures on social media, or needing to work whilst abroad, there’s a wi-fi package suited to your needs. Ask our Cruise Experts for more information on these enhancements, when you book P&O Cruises holidays at Southampton Cruise Centre.

Cool Cruiser

does anyone know if you can still pay for day visits when the ships are in Southampton?

Am in Southampton for the weekend and would love to take my friend who has never cruised on Indy or explorer next year when they are in port at the same time.

Hunted on here and web and can’t find anything, hoping they still do this!

Royal don't do ships visits at Southampton.

MSC, P&O and Cunard. The MSC have all sold out for this year. P&O no longer which ships are available to visit, you have to contact them and tell which ship you are interested in. Haven't seen much on their web site.

However try this site https://www.completecruisesolution.com/email_bulletins/Ship_visits_landing.html

On Rci it used to be that you pay 💰 for the ship visit and if you booked  on board you got that money back. Not sure how it works now

On X the Visit is free...you can take advantage of the regular book on board benefits..free transfer..up to $500 obc

P&O  is now £30 per person for a visit. MSC was £20.  Cunard is £50. All include lunch.

P&O offer the money back if you book a cruise.

This year there were 20 dates for Cunard ships. Between 30th June to 8th December.

Princess visits are generally for Agents not public.

Most visits are for 40 odd guests.

so even though it would be my first celebrity cruise I would be booking it might be worth waiting the few weeks to book as get more benefits? (I know prices can change)

P&O Cruises New Ship Arvia Arrives in Southampton

  • December 18, 2022

P&O Arvia Arrival

P&O Cruises newest ship Arvia arrived into its homeport of Southampton on Sunday, prior to its maiden voyage to the Canary Islands on Friday.

The Arvia is P&O Cruises second ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the marine industry’s most advanced fuel technology to date, the company said in a statement.

P&O Arvia Arrival

P&O Cruises president, Paul Ludlow, who was on board for the arrival as Arvia sailed up Southampton Water earlier this morning after the journey from the shipyard in Germany, said:

“It was a truly remarkable moment as, after the years of design and build, Arvia arrived into Southampton ahead of the maiden voyage and then departure for the Caribbean season.

“As the latest evolution in the P&O Cruises experience, embodies the newest trends in travel, dining and entertainment and is the epitome of a sunshine resort sailing year-round to the warmest climates. It takes its sister ship Iona’s design aesthetic and general arrangement but provides new and exciting outside and inside spaces which make the most of Arvia’s deployment to the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

“We cannot wait for our first guests to be on board this week to see the extraordinary attention to detail, design of the restaurants and bars, scale of the theatre, the layout and new brands in the retail area and the exhilarating top deck activities. We are seeing a new generation recognizing the value for money and individuality of a holiday at sea.”

P&O Cruises - Boarding Process in Southampton, April 2023

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

In April 2023, we embarked on our 20th P&O Cruise, cruising onboard the fleet's Flagship, Britannia. This was a shorter cruise over Easter weekend so we suspected that it would be a busy one! As it fell over the bank holidays, this meant Laura only had to use 2 days annual leave for the 5 night cruise and we assumed lots of others would be capitalising on that too. We weren't wrong and we soon found out that the cruise was sold out, so Britannia would be sailing completely full.

As mentioned, this was our 20th cruise with P&O and we've also cruised with Princess from Southampton so we've got lots of experience of the boarding process there. We thought we had a very good idea of what to expect but recent changes meant we were wrong! We've put together a guide to embarkation with P&O below, as well as our experience of the new process on the Easter cruise.

You can watch our vlogs from this cruise on our YouTube channel and if you want to follow our cruise adventures in real time, we recommend following us on Instagram , Twitter and Facebook .

What do I need to do before embarkation day?

Around 3 weeks before your cruise with P&O you'll have access to the online check in system. On here you'll need to complete your passport information, upload a security photograph and add your card details. You can do some of these parts at the check in desk, but it's a much faster process if you complete it at home and if you've booked through a travel agent, often they'll help you with this part.

Once all of your details are completed you'll be able to generate and print out your boarding pass and luggage labels. Your boarding pass will give you an arrival time and the QR code at the bottom is scanned when you get onto the ship. Below is a copy of our most recent boarding pass (with anything vital removed!) to give you an idea of what to expect.

p&o ship visits southampton

What happens when I arrive at the terminal?

When you get to your embarkation terminal (which will be printed on your boarding pass) you'll be able to hand your luggage over to staff who will transport it onto the ship, and then onwards to your cabin. The luggage drop off points are separated by cabin location, so you'll need to find the correct one but don't worry there are plenty of staff to point you in the right direction. Once you've done that you'll be able to head on over to the building and this is where things have changed recently.

If you're cruising on one of the larger ships, you'll most likely be cruising out of Ocean Terminal. Previously, you've been able to enter the building and head up to the escalators to the massive waiting area. Here staff will check your boarding pass and either direct you to the check in desks, or ask you to take a seat while you wait. Usually those who had arrived close to their boarding time would be directed straight to the check in desks, and those who had arrived early would be seated and boarded in groups either during quieter periods or once they had reached their boarding time.

Recently P&O have changed this policy and they are no longer allowing entry to the building if you have arrived too early. There are mixed reviews on how early is too early, some are saying that if it's within the hour you'll be able to go in and board. Others have reported being asked to wait outside until right up to the time printed on their boarding pass. Those waiting outside are asked to wait in a sort of holding pen area formed with metal barriers.

Our Experience

We're about to upset some people as we are aware that some people believe arriving earlier that your boarding time is a terrible crime, but on this occasion we did arrive in Southampton early. For all the will in the world it can be very difficult to time your arrival perfectly. As we were driving down on Good Friday, we were worried about the Bank Holiday traffic, so had allowed plenty of time for our journey. At first, we killed some time by stopping for breakfast. Then we decided to drop our cases off at the terminal (which you can do anytime after 11am) and head into Southampton. After a lot of walking around the shops, and a trip to Mayflower park to look at the other ships in port, we were exhausted and our backs were starting to suffer from carrying our hand luggage with us.

As we had always been able to wait in the vast seating area inside Ocean Terminal when we've been early before, we headed back over there with the intention of doing this again. We were just under an hour early, and were asked to wait outside in the holding area. We were here for less than 10 minutes before our boarding time was called and we had to fight through the crowd to try and get back out. We assumed we were being asked to wait outside because inside the building was full, but as we headed up the escalator we noticed that the inside seating area was completely empty. We were funnelled straight into another queue, which was for check in.

We'd completed all of our check in information online, so all we had to do was hand over our boarding passes and passports and we received a stamp on our boarding pass confirming we were ok to board. After this, we were sent over to the seating area in front of security and directed into specific rows, but before we'd even had the chance to sit down we were moved over to the security queue. We then had a bit of a wait for security as we'd been directed to join a queue for the entrance at the far end of the building, and unfortunately in this area only two security check points were open. The other half had four open, and that queue was moving much more quickly but we were soon heading through to board the ship and enjoy our cruise.

Overall we can't be too annoyed by the short wait we had outside as we weren't there for very long at all, but we have heard some horror stories of people who have been waiting outside for hours since the new process was implemented. We arrived early, so accepted that there would be a wait involved and we not hesitate to do it again rather than deal with the stress of being stuck in traffic and cutting it fine to get on board.

There are two main things that we would like to see changed, and hopefully P&O will listen to feedback from customers, as we have seen lots of others saying similar on social media. The first is that we think P&O should allow you to select your arrival time as part of the check in process. We've done this with other cruise lines and it works very well as passengers can then factor this into their plans. Secondly, we'd like to see P&O allowing passengers to sit indoors in the available seating area where there are also toilet facilities for them to use. There were people being asked to stand outside who were struggling physically with the wait and it seems unreasonable when there is space to accommodate them inside.

We also talk about our thoughts on this new boarding process, and everything else we got up to on our first day on Britannia in our Day 1 vlog.

Interesting. 20 cruises! - I guess you must like cruising a lot! I've never fancied it myself, largely because of what you describe here: being part of a large crowd, which inevitably means being herded around sometimes. Good on you for sharing your experience so others can be forewarned.

Thank you! It is great fun and once you get used to it you can definitely avoid the crowds if you want to.

The Cunard and P&O ships leaving Southampton this week including Aurora and Queen Mary 2

One had her prestigious naming ceremony in Portsmouth over the summer

Cunard flagship liner Queen Mary 2 is listed to depart Southampton this week

The world's most impressive cruise ships continue to make Southampton their temporary home, with more on the way this week.

MSC Virtuosa departed the Port of Southampton in June to become the first cruise to embark from the UK since the coronavirus pandemic brought the industry to a standstill.

Since that moment, ships owned and operated by companies including P&O and Cunard have all come and gone from Southampton.

READ MORE: 'I went on a Christmas steam train in Hampshire and the lights were amazing'

Since full operations resumed in May, the neighbouring city of Portsmouth has also seen an influx of spectacular cruise liners, including Virgin Voyage's Scarlet Lady - whose sister ship will debut from the city in Spring 2022 .

Mike Sellers, director of Portsmouth International Port , has said there is no focus on trying to "compete" with the neighbouring port in Southampton. He claimed the "mass market" already goes there so it is important Portsmouth found its own niche.

The irony of this is that cruise liners that visited Portsmouth over the summer, such as Saga Cruises Spirit of Adventure, now make regular visits to Southampton.

According to the shipping movement list, many of the largest cruise companies have ships sailing in and out of Southampton in the next week.

The shipping movements are listed online, and are subject to change, but give us an idea of the ideal time to spot a great cruise ship.

Below, HampshireLive has highlighted some of the cruise ships that will be sailing out of Southampton over the next seven days.

Queen Mary 2

Cunard flagship liner Queen Mary 2 is listed to depart Southampton this week.

She can hold 2,691 guests, plus 1,250 crew members, and measures 1,132ft in length.

Onboard is a luxurious spa, an array of enthralling entertainment venues and a vast library.

There are also 15 restaurants and bars, five swimming pools, a casino, a ballroom, a theatre, and even a planetarium.

According to the shipping movements, she will arrive at 7am on Tuesday morning (November 15) before departing on Saturday (November 20) at 4pm. However, she will return the next day (November 21) and remain at Southampton until November 26.

Aurora is P&O Cruise's smallest ship - but that doesn't make her any less impressive.

Located at the heart of the ship is an atrium that spans four decks, and includes a 35-foot sculpture designed by artist John Mills.

Aurora has a normal operating capacity of 1,874 guests and 850 crew - she is an adult-only cruise liner.

She entered into service in April 2000, and measures 270m, weighs 76,152 tons and has nine guest decks.

According to the shipping movements, she arrived in Southampton at approximately 9.10am on Monday morning (November 15) and will leave at 5.30pm.

Queen Elizabeth

This Cunard cruise ship also arrived in Southampton on Monday morning at 6.55am. She will be departing the Port of Southampton at 8pm.

Over the last few months, the cruise ship has been touring the UK due to coronavirus restrictions, but it looks like she is now travelling further afield.

Queen Elizabeth made her debut in 2010. She is 964.5ft in length and can carry 2,081 guests.

Spirit of Adventure

Spirit of Adventure arrived in Portsmouth on Tuesday morning (July 13)

Saga Cruises Spirit of Adventure was in the news over the summer when her prestigious naming ceremony was carried out in Portsmouth.

Spectators caught a glimpse of the 236-metre boutique cruise ship as she sailed into Portsmouth in July .

Spirit of Adventure features five speciality restaurants including the world’s first Nepalese restaurant at sea – Khukuri House, alongside Amalfi, a high-end Italian cuisine restaurant and the Supper Club a dining and live entertainment venue.

The ship has a 500 sq metre spa, The Lido outdoor pool, The Playhouse, a 444-seat theatre and a large library.

She arrived at 7am on Monday morning and will depart at 6pm. Later in the week, Spirit of Adventure will return on Saturday - timings have yet to be confirmed.
