19 Best Things to Do in Palm Springs, California

From tram rides to stargazing, here's how to get to know this one-of-a-kind desert city.

palm springs california trip

Mariah Tyler/Travel + Leisure

Palm Springs is an iconic California destination, and the sunny, vibrant, and design-forward town has been a favorite hideaway for relaxation lovers for decades. While it’s certainly a place in which you might lounge by the pool and catch rays all day, you should know that there's more to this desert escape than meets the eye.

“I think Palm Springs is an international city with a village vibe, and that makes it special,” Liz Ostich, owner of Farm Palm Springs , Tac/Quila , Clandastino , and Front Porch , told Travel + Leisure . “The architecture, climate, restaurant scene, and proximity to countless Southern California destinations make it a unique place to visit.”

Ostich, who was born just an hour outside of Palm Springs, has plenty of ideas about what visitors should do once here — it’s all about seeing the town from every angle, including from inside some of its coolest homes. You can also see the city from above. “Palm Springs is home to the largest rotating tram in the world, taking you up to an alpine forest in minutes,” Ostrich says. She also points to popular local events . “One of my favorite events is Modernism Week. Twice a year, people come from all over the world for well-curated home tours, parties, and presentations.”

Ready to explore on your own? Here are 19 things you should see and do while visiting Palm Springs.

Have a date shake at Hadley’s.

Nothing makes for a better start or end to a trip to Palm Springs than stopping in at Hadley’s for a date shake. The fruit orchard, located about 18 miles from Palm Springs in Cabazon, was founded in 1931 and has long been loved for its produce selection. But its thick and perfectly sweet date shakes are what really draw a crowd. Why not get one on the way in, and on the way out?

Ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

Mariah Tyler/Travel + Leisure

For a great view, take a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway , which travels 2.5 miles up to its peak at 8,516 feet. Once there, you can get off and explore nearly 50 miles of hiking trails before riding the tram back to the base again.

Take flight at the Palm Springs Air Museum.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

The Palm Springs Air Museum works to preserve wartime aircraft from World War II and onward, and many of the planes can still fly today. Come see and learn about the planes up close, or book a flight and actually climb aboard one. Flights in restored WWII aircrafts soar over the Coachella Valley.

Get some sun at Sunnylands.

Find a little zen at Sunnylands, a 200-acre desert oasis ranch open to the public. Sunnylands has gardens to explore, an adorable cafe for a quick bite and a coffee, and a mid-1960s estate to tour that will leave you feeling inspired.

Greet the animals at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens.

To meet a few of the animals that also call Palm Springs home, head to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens . Visitors can see everything from leopards and rhinos to mongoose and lizards here — there's even a few wallabies.

Take a midcentury modern architecture tour.

Palm Springs is a design lover's dream come true, packed with midcentury homes sure to delight anyone who loves clean lines and pops of color. You can see all the best buildings in town on a self-guided architecture tour , which takes you to some utterly cool homes and teaches you about the architects behind them. Or, book a guided tour with a local operator.

Get inspired at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

After viewing homes that are works of art themselves, make your way downtown to see art of a different kind at Palm Springs Art Museum. The museum showcases stunning works in its two dozen galleries, as well as outside in its sculpture gardens. Check the website for the latest exhibitions and what to see during your visit.

This is another one that takes a bit of driving, but it’s entirely worth your time — cruise about 45 minutes outside of Palm Springs until you find Joshua Tree National Park . There, you can hike, drive, or do a little bit of both in this otherworldly landscape dotted with puffed-up Joshua trees.

Your Trip to Palm Springs: The Complete Guide

Palm Springs Guide: Planning Your Trip

palm springs california trip

It’s not a mirage. Palm Springs—long the preferred desert retreat of Hollywood royalty, presidents, wellness seekers, golfers, and sun-worshippers—is a vacationer’s paradise whether your perfect trip checklist is topped by beautiful scenery, fine dining, historical and cultural attractions, unique architecture, luxuriant resorts or hip hotels, ideal weather, indulgent spas, shopping sprees, active pursuits, LGBTQ-friendliness, music festivals, or vibrant nightlife.

Surrounded by three mountain ranges and a national park and blessed with more than 300 days of rays a year and clear twinkling night skies, Palm Springs, and the other eight cities that populate the Coachella Valley like Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage, and Desert Hot Springs, promise you will find your personal oasis here. This planning guide, with its tips on where to stay, when to go, and what to eat, drink, and do, should help sunlight the way.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time To Visit: The desert truly dazzles in winter. When much of the nation is facing months of rain, snow, and polar vortexes, daytime temperatures dip below 69 so infrequently that most residents probably don’t know what sleet is exactly. This means visitors can comfortably golf, hike, play tennis, shop in outdoor malls, and lounge by the pool even in the coldest month (December). Most of the valley’s significant events, including the film festival, Modernism Week, and PGA tournaments, are held before April when music fans rush in for Coachella and Stagecoach. Of course, prices are higher, and the crowds are more prominent during the high season between winter holidays and mid-Spring.

Language: English, but many residents speak Spanish, too.

Currency: U.S. Dollar

Getting Around: Palm Springs proper is relatively compact and walkable with the only commercial airport less than three miles from downtown. If you don’t intend to explore the larger area or leave resort property from the time you arrive until it’s time to say goodbye, you can get by using taxis or rideshare apps. But if you want to adventure outside the city limits, rent a car. Sunline Transit Agency also operates busses around town, including The Buzz, which is a free trolley that loops through downtown and uptown along Palm and Indian Canyon roads from noon to 10 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays.

Travel Tip: As beautiful as it is, the desert is not be trifled with. Dehydration is a serious issue, especially when the summer heat soars into triple digits. Even if you’re just lounging by the pool all day, drink plenty of water. Plan active outdoor activities early in the morning during summer. Some experts recommend skipping valley floor hiking trails all together in this season, but if you insist, they recommend each person carry at least 100 ounces of water in a bladder plus a full water bottle. Stock the car with more to drink upon return. Always tell someone where you’ve gone, never wander off-trail, and look out for venomous rattlesnakes. They’re most likely to be seen in May and June and should be given a wide berth.

Things To Do

The desert easily lends itself to dichotomous itineraries. Some folks turn up to solely tune out, spending hours at the pool, spa, or on a porch with a cocktail mesmerized by the purple glow of dusk. Others book their days end to end with activities that start with early morning tee times at one of more than 100 golf courses and finish with lost inhibitions and pulsating EDM beats at a nightclub within the deeply rooted and energetic LGBTQ scene. In between, they hop around off-roading, getting an up-close look at the iconic windmills, feeding animals at The Living Desert Zoo , taking a photography workshop, or star-gazing in Joshua Tree National Park , hitting a museum, birding at the Salton Sea, or visiting a date farm. However, you prefer to roll, consider these very Palm Springs pastimes:

• It's the capital of midcentury modern architecture with the country's largest collection of still-standing preserved examples. Many were once owned or visited by movie stars or Rat Packers like Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, Peter Lawford, and Lucille Ball. Because the walls can't talk, book a tour with an outfit like Palm Springs Mod Squad to dig into the dirt. Some programs even take you inside mansions or come with cocktails. Maps for self-guided exploration on bike or foot are plentiful. Design devotion reaches a crescendo during February's Modernism Week .

• The best way to take advantage of the great weather and the even greater outdoors setting is hiking. There are fantastic and diverse hikes for all fitness levels, including trails that wander past waterfalls, ancient Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indian sites, rock formations, and wildflower-dotted hillsides. You can even trek through snow by taking the Aerial Tramway (another must even if you only ride up and back for the views) up to the wooded wonderland of Mt. San Jacinto State Park, which sits at 8,516 feet above sea level.

• There's top-notch vintage shopping in the Coachella Valley. Most boutiques are independently owned, so you can feel good about spending a small fortune on gauzy caftans, fedoras, and Lucite dining room sets. Uptown and downtown Palm Springs have the largest concentrations of stores, but serious hunters should continue to Perez Road in Cathedral City and The Fine Art Of Design in Palm Desert.

Decide how to further fill your schedule by checking out the ultimate 48-hour itinerary and articles on the region's best museums , annual events, and festivals , and 10 fun day trips from Palm Springs.

Where To Eat and Drink

For decades, the destination was a stronghold of steakhouses and stiff drinks. While you can still feast on filets and get buzzed on bourbon and martinis at plenty of meat-forward joints and dark bars, the dining scene has evolved to reflect the diverse California population, the farm-to-table movement, and the fact that agriculture is the second-largest contributor to the local economy after tourism. Making good use of all that produce is the founder of the first national vegan chain (Native Foods) at her new venture, Chef Tanya's Kitchen , and James Beard Award winner Workshop Kitchen + Bar , who sources a majority of their ingredients from within an hour of their tables. One of the most commonly used ingredients on menus around town is dates. Date palms were planted here in the 1890s , and now the Coachella Valley grows 95 percent of U.S. dates. Several farms are open to the public for tours, sales, and samples (or even better date shakes) like Shields Date Garden and Oasis Date Garden . As this is the southern Golden State, the town goes big on brunch, never met a patio it didn't love, and Mexican food is always a good idea.

Lively day drinking scenes can be found at (and often in) resort pools all over the valley. Especially good are the party plunges at The Ace Hotel and Swim Club (so fun it's in the name!), La Quinta Resort's Veuve Clicquot-fueled Aprés Swim , and Saguaro (known for fresh fruit punches and frozen tipples). Once the sun goes down, the action moves to tiki bars ( Bootlegger Tiki , The Reef , The Tonga Hut), jazzy cocktail lounges, the occasional brewery, and any number of gay bars, drag shows, and nightclubs like Hunters , Streetbar , and Eagle 501 . Sometimes they check more than one box like Elixir at V (poolside and Polynesian) or Toucans (drag queens and hula themes). For a more exhaustive directory, check out the Gay Desert Guide .

See our picks for the area's 16 can't-miss restaurants .

Where To Stay

Lodging is the most challenging choice you'll have to make regarding this trip because the Greater Palm Springs region is truly blessed in the accommodations department. Available to book are modern desert dwellings formerly owned by celebrities, mega-resorts with golf courses, historic hotels, chic boutiques, hipster haunts, campsites, budget motels (and design-savvy overhauls of said motels), B&Bs, and charming inns. As almost all have good restaurants, sparkling pools, popular bars, and lush grounds, narrow the field by deciding what hotel style best suits you and what amenities are most important, whether it's a rooftop pool (Kimpton's The Rowan is the only one in town), ice cream shop ( ARRIVE ), natural hot springs ( Two Bunch Palms , which runs entirely on solar power), a high-end spa ( Parker ), complimentary bikes and a library ( Korakia Pensione ), or a waterpark (newest one's at Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort ).

Many of the best Palm Springs boutiques, updated historic properties, and home rentals are found in downtown, the Uptown Design District, and ritzy neighborhoods including Twin Palms, Tennis Club, Movie Colony, Indian Canyons, and Vista Las Palmas. Many of those will be a short walk or bike ride to restaurants, bars, shopping, and attractions. A growing number cater to over-21 travelers , including Les Cactus , L'Horizon , Sparrows Lodge , Villa Royale , and The Paloma .

As a general rule, the massive luxury resorts, many run by upmarket chains, are located in the surrounding cities like Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage, and Palm Desert. These are great for folks looking for a one-stop-shop stay or who are traveling with kids or large groups. Including JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort which includes restaurants, arcade, golf course, flamingo area, and even gondola to get around the resort.

Palm Springs also has the largest concentration of LGBTQ resorts in the Western United States, most of which are clothing optional and found in the heart of the community, the Arenas District . See our recommendations for gay-friendly stays and romantic hotels .

Getting There

How best to arrive in Palm Springs depends on where you’re coming from. Many people drive from other parts of Southern California, Las Vegas, or Arizona. If you’re coming from farther away, a plane might be a better option, in which case you will find yourself at the Palm Springs International Airport (PSP). The mostly outdoor, architecturally-significant (of course it is!) airport is served by 11 airlines, including Delta, American, Air Canada, and Frontier, providing nonstop flights to and from 23 cities in the U.S. and Canada (hence the international designation!). Amtrak has bus service to Palm Springs from train stations in Fullerton and Los Angeles. More transportation information can be found in this guide to PSP .

Money-Saving Tips

• To say summer in these parts is scorching would be an understatement as 100-degree-plus days are the norm in June, July, August, and September. Therefore it has always been the slow season. But if you can stomach the heat, or are someone who thrives in it, you can cash in on big hotel deals or easily score prime rentals and timeshare slots. Word of warning: if you have your heart set on visiting a particular restaurant, bar, or shop, call ahead as quite a few businesses take extended breaks in July or August.

• If you aren’t attending one of the music festivals, avoid those weekends if you can. They mark the most crowded and expensive time of the year to visit the entire Coachella Valley (as well as the rest of the Morongo Basin where Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms are located). Even budget motels ask several hundreds of dollars a night. Traffic ratchets up, and lines are long. If you are a ticket holder, secure accommodations ASAP.

• Designer duds from more than 150 name brands, including Prada, Alexander McQueen, and Gucci, can be found at a discount at the Desert Hills Premium Outlets in Cabazon. If you drove, it’s an easy detour on your way into or out of town.

• Check attraction websites to see if there are weekly or monthly free days or discounts for active-duty military, seniors, or AAA members. For instance, the Palm Springs Art Museum is free every Thursday night from 4 to 8 p.m. and every second Sunday of the month. It also provides complimentary admission for children under 18 and active-duty military and their families as well as discounted tickets for people 62 and older, college students, and teachers. If art isn’t your cup of tea, browse this Greater Palm Springs CVB-compiled list of other activities that won’t cost a penny, including polo matches in Indio, scenic drives, and live music at Agua Caliente Casino and Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

Writer Freddy Sherman lives in Palm Springs and spends most days exploring different parts of the city with his Belgian Malinois Gretel.

Palm Springs is a vacation destination set in the Sonoran Desert surrounded by four different mountain ranges. The resort city is just a three-hour drive from San Diego and a two-hour drive from Los Angeles, making it popular for weekend getaways .

Golf course in Palm Springs

Known for mid-century modern style, its plethora of championship golf courses , warm weather, and a fun and welcoming vibe, the city, along with several surrounding communities known collectively as the Coachella Valley , is a popular winter destination .

Beyond the golf resorts and swimming pools there are still plenty of tourist attractions, things to do, and places to visit. You can take your pick from a wide range of activities downtown like shopping; dining; touring museums; or exploring the surrounding desert, mountains, and canyons.

When it's cold in most other parts of North America (approximately November through March), that's the high season for Palm Springs, and the population swells with visitors and snowbirds.

The city is home to a serious lineup of Hollywood celebrities each January during the annual Palm Springs Film Festival , and draws architecture and design fans from around the world during February's Modernism Week. The city is also crowded in April during the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals , held in Indio about 30 minutes from downtown.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and Mount San Jacinto

Escape the heat of the desert with a quick ride into the mountains on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway . Standing on the edge of Palm Springs, Mount San Jacinto rises more than 10,000 feet above the desert floor and can be easily accessed with a ride on the scenic tramway.

The tramway, which opened in 1963, has the world's largest rotating aerial tram cars . The cars are suspended from cables, like a ski lift, and the cables are strung atop metal towers installed on the mountainside. From the top, the view out over the desert is fantastic, and on hot days, the cool air (sometimes 30 to 40 degrees lower than that at the desert floor) can be a refreshing treat. During the winter, there is snow at the top.

In less than 10 minutes, the tram will take you up Chino Canyon to an elevation of 8,500 feet. At the top, called the Mountain Station, there are observation decks, two restaurants, historical displays, and videos on the construction of the tram. From here, 50 miles of hiking trails run through the pine forests of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, including a trail to the summit of Mount San Jacinto (11 miles round trip). You can also camp in the park.

At the tramway entrance on U.S. 111, you'll find the Palm Springs Visitor Information Center. Housed in a striking mid-century structure (a former gas station) designed by celebrated architect Albert Frey, the center is a great place to stop for visitors.

It's fun to go swimming in Palm Springs in the heat of the desert, then drive to the tram, take it up the mountain and play in the snow, all within an hour.

Address: One Tram Way, Palm Springs, California

'Forever Marilyn' statue in Palm Springs

The "Forever Marilyn" statue is a 26-foot tall sculpture of the iconic Hollywood actress, now installed right in front of the Palm Springs Art Museum in downtown Palm Springs. The sculpture shows Marilyn with her billowing dress from the film "The Seven Year Itch", one of her most famous roles.

It was originally installed on Palm Canyon Drive from 2012 to 2014, then moved to New Jersey. Public demand brought it back to Palm Springs and it's now the most popular place in the city to take photos.

The area around the statue can be crowded with other visitors, so visit early in the morning or late at night for some alone time with the sculpture. Be sure to visit the adjacent pocket park, which has grass and rocking chairs for relaxing. There are also palm trees to shade you from the sun along with public restrooms, water fountains, and a doggie waste station with bags.

Palm Springs Air Museum

The Palm Springs Air Museum has a large collection of military aircraft, many of which still fly. Planes from World War II along with the Korean and Vietnam Wars are represented. It's a fascinating place to visit as most of the docents who provide tours are veterans themselves, with personal connections to the types of aircraft they talk about.

The aircraft are shown in static displays, and you can also get inside and tour some of them, including a massive B-17 bomber. Much of the collection is displayed inside air-conditioned hangars, so it's a great place to visit if you're looking for an escape from the city's extreme summer heat.

The Palm Springs Air Museum is located at the Palm Springs International Airport, about 10 minutes from downtown Palm Springs. For those wanting to get up into the sky, the air museum offers flights on some of their rare warbirds.

Address: 745 North Gene Autry Trail, Palm Springs, California

Indian Canyons

The Indian Canyons, located at the south end of Palm Springs, is a popular protected nature sanctuary comprised of three unique canyon environments. The area is part of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians reservation and is a great place for hiking and exploring some beautiful desert scenery.

Be sure to start with one of the main areas, Palm Canyon . This 15-mile long canyon, complete with a creek and waterfalls, is lined with large palm trees. In fact, the canyon is home to the world's largest grove of California fan palms . The canyon is home to a range of hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulties. The Indian Canyons park has a trading post selling souvenirs, Indian art, and other tribal-related items.

Andreas Canyon , another canyon area within the Indian Canyons park, is also worth checking out and is known as a good place to see birds. In the same vicinity is Murray Canyon, with a less frequented hiking trail and better opportunities for spotting deer and other wildlife. There are many hiking trails in the park, and many of those trails take you into multiple canyons.

Tahquitz Canyon is another protected canyon area, also tribal land, located near but not within the Indian Canyons space. This canyon has lots of hiking trails and is home to a 60-foot-tall waterfall. There is a visitor's center with artifact displays, hiking information, and a small theater showing a documentary about the canyon.

Golf course in Palm Springs

Palm Springs and nearby cities like La Quinta, Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage, and Palm Desert have over 100 championship-level golf courses. Many of the city's best courses are public and accessible to anyone (waiting lists are long during popular periods).

The city is a very popular golf destination, as the weather is great for golf (an average of over 300 days of sunshine a year), especially during the winter months. Summer temperatures are extreme, making early morning games the only option.

Aside from the well-groomed and challenging courses, you also get the benefit of the beautiful scenery and desert backdrops. As you play, you're treated to a changing desert landscape with the area's different mountain ranges always visible in the distance.

Popular golf courses playable by the public in the area include PGA West (home to the American Express Desert Classic, formerly the Bob Hope Classic), the Indian Wells Golf Resort (home to the Renaissance Indian Wells, the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells, and the Indian Wells Resort Hotel), Marriott's Shadow Ridge, and the Indian Canyons Golf Resort.

Palm Springs Art Museum

The Palm Springs Art Museum features a combination of fine art, natural history, and performing arts. The museum has been in existence since the late 1930s and formerly focused almost exclusively on desert subjects and artists, but over the years, the direction has shifted to a well-curated collection of modern and contemporary art, including Native American art.

In addition to fine art, the museum has a large collection of Native American craftwork and artifacts. There is also a natural science collection of animals and fossils on display, making the museum a great place to visit for kids and families.

Also on-site are two outdoor sculpture gardens. The museum's permanent collections include paintings, photography, glass, pottery, and architecture and design with a focus on American Western art and artists. There are also touring and changing temporary exhibitions and shows.

Providing a wide selection of year-round programming, the museum's large Annenberg Theater hosts an extensive series of music, dance, and theater productions and performances.

Address: 101 Museum Drive, Palm Springs, California

Coachella Valley Preserve

The Coachella Valley Preserve is a large, protected outdoor space covering over 13,000 acres of raw desert and mountain landscapes. It's a partnership between federal, state, and private land-owners, allowing management and preservation of the natural environment.

Located east of Palm Springs, the Coachella Valley Preserve is home to a variety of wildlife. It's made up of three different preserve areas. The best one to visit is the Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve area, near Palm Desert. There are 30 miles of hiking trails along with multiple oases.

Guided hikes led by volunteer docents are a great way to see the preserve and offer an excellent overview of the area. Like other outdoor activities in Palm Springs, hiking is best done in the fall and winter months as the temperatures climb to dangerous heights in the summer.

Barrel cactus at the Moorten Botanical Gardens and Cactarium

The Moorten Botanical Gardens and Cactarium is located just past downtown Palm Springs on the south end of Palm Canyon Drive. The unique nature space first opened in 1938 and offers an incredible display of cacti and desert plants that range from full-grown trees to plants just taking root. In the spring, when the desert is coming into bloom, and trees are starting to turn green again, the gardens are at their best.

Moorten is open year-round, but during the cooler months, from fall until spring, you can take a guided tour of the facility offered free with admission. Typical hours are 10am to 4pm and the gardens are closed on Wednesdays.

The gardens are also a commercial nursery, so in addition to being a botanical garden, you can purchase some of the plants to take home with you.

Address: 1701 S. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, California

Jaguar at the Living Desert Zoo

What started 50 years ago as an idea to preserve some raw desert land as the surrounding area developed into a resort has become a world-class zoo. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in nearby Palm Desert offers a chance to see the flora and fauna of the desert and gain some insight into ecosystems from deserts around the globe.

The compact zoo also features a variety of animals from North America and Africa, including camels, coyotes, wolves, foxes, badgers, mountain lions, raptors, zebras, giraffes, hyenas, leopards, gazelle, and many other species.

The morning is generally the best time to visit, when the animals are still active before the heat sets in. Check the zoo's daily schedule to find out about guided nature walks, wildlife shows, and animal feeding times.

A highlight is to participate in the daily giraffe feeding. Guests can feed their herd of giraffes from a tower. It's done in the mornings during the summer and all day during the other months. You can also interact with the zoo's camels, working with keepers on feeding, grooming, or training them.

Address: 47900 Portola Avenue, Palm Desert, California

Villagefest

On Thursday evenings year-round, downtown Palm Springs turns into a giant street party, with more than 180 vendors set up along the city's main street for VillageFest . A quarter-mile stretch of Palm Canyon Drive is closed to traffic, and booths are set up along both sides of the street.

This is a fun evening out, where you can shop for arts, crafts, jewelry, and other interesting trinkets and also try some tasty snacks from local restaurants and artisinal providers. As you shop, musical performers, buskers, and other street artists provide additional entertainment.

The night market event starts early in the evening, around 6 or 7pm, depending on the season, and runs until 10pm.

Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center

Palm Springs is home to the world's largest collection of intact mid-century modern buildings in the world. The city celebrates the design movement each February with Modernism Week.

Design and architecture fans come from all over the world, and there are many events, including open houses, film screenings, and home tours of architecturally significant structures.

The Palm Springs Art Museum's Architecture and Design Center is a unique and free attraction that is worth a stop, particularly if you are interested in architecture or design. Located in a preserved 1960 mid-century modern bank building, similar in style to many other buildings in Palm Springs that still remain from this period, the structure itself is a protected historic site.

The Architecture and Design Center holds the architecture collections of the Palm Springs Art Museum and features temporary exhibitions, as well as a rotating display of material from the permanent collection.

The art museum also operates the Frey House II , an important modernist home in the mountains designed by iconic architect Albert Frey for his own family. The home can be visited on docent-led tours.

Address: 300 South Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, California

Exhibit at the Palm Springs Historical Society

The Palm Springs Historical Society has a small but comprehensive museum in the heart of the downtown area right on Palm Canyon Drive. It's housed in two preserved 19th-century buildings and has a free museum and other exhibits.

The society is also known for its many excellent walking (and biking) tours of the city, available with different themes. You can take a walking tour that explores the city's architecture, its Native American history, its many connections with the Rat Pack, or its many celebrity residents.

Address: 221 South Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, California

Wind turbines in Palm Springs

Just outside of Palm Springs, the San Gorgonio Pass is one of the most windy places on Earth, which is why it's filled with windmills (well actually wind turbines). The pass, located on either side of the I-10 freeway as it enters the Coachella Valley, not only has extreme wind, it has constant wind, which is essential for power generation. Acres of wind turbines dot the desert and the hillsides, silently generating electrical power for the region.

You can view the wind turbines by pulling off the I-10 freeway at the Indian Canyon exit or by taking a tour. Palm Springs Windmill Tours has the only official tour that takes you "behind the fence" to get up close and personal with these giant machines.

Address: 62950 20th Street, Palm Springs, California

Sunnylands

Sunnylands is an incredible, mid-century modern estate that was the home of billionaire businessman (and founder of TV Guide) Walter Annenberg and his wife. The vast 200-acre estate has hosted seven U.S. presidents and summit meetings with world leaders, serving as a West Coast Camp David for several presidents, including President Obama.

Designed by celebrated MCM architect A. Quincy Jones, the 25,000 square foot main house and its incredible art collection, along with its gardens, can be visited. Sunnylands is in Rancho Mirage, about 25 minutes from downtown Palm Springs.

Visiting the park-like grounds is free. Tickets can be purchased for docent-led tours of the house and art collection.

Address: 37977 Bob Hope Drive, Rancho Mirage, California

Date palm grove near Palm Springs

Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley has a rich agricultural history. One of the key crops is dates, and the area produces more than 90 percent of the dates grown in the U.S. This Middle Eastern fruit was first planted in the desert in the early 20th century, one of the few crops that can be grown year-round in the area's extreme weather.

The Shields Date Garden is in Indio, about 30 minutes from downtown Palm Springs. The almost-20-acre date farm has a café, a guided tour of the date groves, and even a theater showing a kitschy 1940s movie about date farming. They also serve date shakes, a must-drink date milkshake-like smoothie every Palm Springs visitor should try.

Address: 80225 US Hwy 111, Indio, California

Jeep tour driving through Joshua Tree National Park

What better way to explore and experience the desert landscape than in the back of an open Jeep. Most Jeep tours are two to three hours long (a six-hour Joshua Tree adventure is available). The off-road tours explore the local desert landscape and the nearby San Andreas Fault.

Some of the Jeep tours depart from downtown Palm Springs; others start at a ranch in Indio, about 30 minutes east of Palm Springs. The naturalist-guided tours include bottled water and granola bar snacks.

Horses in a canyon near Palm Springs

Another fun way to explore the local desert around Palm Springs in on horseback. Smoke Tree Stables has been operating since 1927 and offers trail rides into the local canyons. These are gentle, guided trail rides suitable for all ages and all levels of experience (including first-timers).

You can do a one-hour group trail ride, which starts at the stables and takes you through the desert along the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains. Another option is a two-hour group ride through Indian Canyons. The ride goes from Andreas Canyon to Murray Canyon and back, along streams and through palm tree groves.

Vintage biplane

Palm Springs Biplanes , a company based at the Palm Springs International Airport (PSP), offers rides in a vintage 1940 Stearman biplane aircraft. The three-seat planes mean the passengers sit next to each other (behind the pilot). The open-top biplanes allow you to see all around, and you wear a cool vintage aviator cap and goggles.

The basic 15-minute flight is only $349 for two people and offers a lot more excitement and memories than a fancy dinner, which costs about the same price. A 30-minute flight takes you across the Coachella Valley and over the Santa Rosa Mountains and the hour-long flight covers the entire region.

Luxury Hotels:

 • Located just a block from the heart of downtown, but worlds away, the Ingleside Inn has a private feel akin to staying at a friend's country estate rather than a hotel. With the San Jacinto Mountains as a backdrop, it is a posh adults-only hideaway with stylish rooms. Amenities include a restaurant, swimming pool, hot tub, and bike rental.
 • Inspired by the desert surrounding it, Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel is located downtown and offers 153 stylish rooms and suites. The hotel is inside a seven-story building and boasts the only rooftop pool and restaurant in town. The property is very dog friendly with no nightly charges for your pet. If you are traveling with kids, it is also a family-friendly resort.
 • Colony Palms Hotel has been around since the 1930s and has hosted its share of celebrities over the years including Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, and Frank Sinatra. Today the 4-star luxury property is a boutique hotel with lots of flair to its rooms and suites. These come with colored mosaic tiles and bright fabrics and many also feature claw-foot bath tubs and fireplaces. Amenities include a saltwater swimming pool, hot tub, restaurant, and a spa. Unlike many Palm Springs hotels, the Colony Palms is family friendly.

Mid-Range Hotels:

 • Desert Riviera Hotel is a top mid-range choice. The vintage property has been recently renovated and features retro decor in its spacious rooms and suites. The adults-only property has a pool, hot tub, and bikes available for guests. A free breakfast is also served.
 • Like many Palm Springs properties, Little Paradise Hotel is also adults-only. The luxe boutique hotel features plush rooms with comfy beds, 4K curved TVs, jet showers, and full kitchens. There is also a heated saltwater pool with sun-loungers.
 • One of the few mid-range hotels that accepts kids, Palm Springs Tennis Club is within walking distance of the historic downtown. It has spacious, modern rooms and suites. Amenities include three swimming pools, tennis courts, and an on-site restaurant.

Budget Hotels:

 • For a family-friendly hotel that is also easy on the budget, check out the Vagabond Motor Hotel . On the outskirts of downtown, it offers tidy and modern rooms. There is a free breakfast offered and parking is also free. If you're traveling with a dog, the hotel allows pets.
 • Days Inn by Wyndham Palm Springs is another budget choice near downtown. It offers spacious rooms with balconies and welcomes families. There is a kid's wading pool, as well as an Olympic-size swimming pool on-site. Other amenities include a hot tub, workout room, restaurant, and free parking.

Moorten botanical garden.

Feel like a slice of greenery in the desert? Need a dose of Insta-worthy flora to refresh yourself?

Then I seriously recommend getting yourself over to the Moorten Botanical Garden !

They’ve got tons of different cacti and other desert plants on show here, which makes for an especially interesting trip if you are into ecology. There are a lot of exotic and strange-looking plants and succulents here.

One of the best times to go to Moorten Botanic Garden is when the cacti are in bloom. But even if you’re not there when they’re in bloom, it’s totally worth the $5 admission.

Perfect if you want to see some desert flora, but don’t want to venture into the actual desert.

Palm Canyon Drive

In the heart of the city, Palm Canyon Drive provides the perfect getaway for all your shopping needs.

Featuring palm trees strung with lights, it’s a dreamy location where you can spend hours of your time—stopping off for coffee, browsing designer stores, vintage boutiques, and art galleries.

It’s basically the most popular street in town!

You can’t really go to Palm Springs, California without exploring Palm Canyon Drive .

Some icons to look out for are the Palm Spring Visitor Center —a spaceship kinda looking building (great for Insta!)—and the Art Deco style Plaza Theatre. Even the Bank of America here, inspired by Le Corbusier, is architecturally interesting.

Joshua Tree National Park

It’s more of a day trip from Palm Springs than something to do in town yourself, but if you’re in Palm Springs for an extended period of time, you should definitely head out for a day to Joshua Tree!

Home of the iconic and super slow-growing Joshua trees themselves, Joshua Tree National Park should totally be on your Palm Spring itinerary if you’re want to see some incredible scenery.

Don’t worry—you don’t have to go on a crazy long hike to experience what Joshua Tree National Park is all about.

Take a trip to the Visitor Center here and you’ll find information on trails that are much easier than you’d imagine. There are short trails that are easy enough even for kids to enjoy!

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Providing a link between Palm Springs and to the top of San Jacinto Peak—the highest of San Jacinto Mountains —the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is more than just transport; it’s a cool thing to do just by itself!

This amazing ride over the sheer mountain face covers a vast array of different habitats and ecosystems.

But what makes it cooler still is the fact that the car you’re in, as it trundles up towards the peak, actually moves around for 360-degree views. Trust me; you’ll want to see it all!

Once you’ve arrived at the top, have a bite at Forest View Restaurant—thousands of feet in the sky! (The last tram down is 9:45 p.m., so you’ve got time for a leisurely dinner.)

Coachella Valley Preserve

Yes, it’s THAT Coachella (home to the famous annual festival, of course), but there’s less music involved here!

Set in the Greater Palm Springs area, Coachella Valley Preserve is another one of the awesome ways you can really get to grips with the desert and all its stark beauty right here.

Over 3,700 acres of protected area awaits your arrival, just ten miles from Palm Springs itself.

It’s the perfect place to soak in nature, with its palm trees, wildlife, and hiking trails ranging from easy to difficult.

Indian Canyons

Any day—weekend or weekday—is great for heading out into Indian Canyons .

Indian Canyons is a great spot for everything from horseback riding to hiking right near to Palm Springs. It’s also the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians. It’s a sacred spot that is a privilege to visit.

You can go on a guided tour—taking in canyon and desert—with a ranger, walking the trails and learning about the people who call this place home.

My advice? Take a picnic! It’s a cool place to chill out and really feel like you’re in nature.

Desert X only happens once every other year for two months (usually February – April ish), but I wanted to be sure to put it on this list in case you’re planning a trip around that time because it’s super cool and you don’t want to miss it!

You can see more pics and read more about Desert X from 2019 in this post , but it’s basically outdoor art installations spread out throughout Palm Springs.

The next Desert X is February 6 – April 11, 2012!

Palm Springs Art Museum

This cool art museum is located in Downtown Palm Springs and was first opened in 1938.

There is an interesting selection of artwork displayed at the Palm Springs Art Museum , with 24,000 objects ranging from Native American Art and photography to fine art and contemporary pieces.

It’s a treat to go visit this place. You may be pretty surprised at the depth this place goes—you could even call it an oasis of culture!

One of my favorite things to do here is to grab a bite to eat and drink in the onsite cafe. This means you can eat outside in one of the sculpture gardens, making for a pretty cool way to spend an afternoon in Palm Springs.

Go on an Architecture Tour

Palm Springs is known for its gorgeous mid-century modern houses and architecture. Book an architecture tour like this one .

One of the coolest things to see in Palm Springs, Robolights is a quirky spot that’s worth your time if you’re looking for something a little off the beaten track.

Featuring millions of lights, neon colors, and a whole lot of other craziness, Robolights was once a seasonal affair, but it’s so popular that it has become a year-round thing.

If you’re wondering what the heck it is, think nuclear elves and wise men with microwaves, a kind of post-apocalyptic Christmas that looks even crazier on a backdrop of palms.

Super cool and totally weird, if you like your vacays unique, totally come here!

There you have it, people! My travel tips for the best time ever in Palm Springs. You may think it’s all hot springs and golf, but as you can see, there’s more to this popular destination than that.

Let me know what awesome stuff you wind up doing in Palm Springs by tagging me in your Insta pics and stories (I’m @ wtfab btw!). I can’t wait to see your content!

Be sure to check out my other Palm Springs content here.

Palm Springs vs. Scottsdale Desert X, Palm Springs Day Trips from Palm Springs Palm Springs Luxury Hotels

The best time of year to visit Palm Springs is from January to April when the weather will be at its best.

It is recommended to spend at least 3 to 4 days in Palm Springs to really enjoy your time in the desert.

The coldest month in Palm Springs is in December.

How to Plan a Weekend in Palm Springs: The Perfect Palm Springs Itinerary

last Updated: August 14, 2023 california Palm Springs Southern California

FYI: Affiliate links may be sprinkled throughout the awesome, free content you see below. I’ll receive a small commission when you purchase from my links (at no extra cost to you), which I’ll totally blow on adult things like boba tea and avocado toast. As always, thanks for the support.

Headed to SoCal and planning a weekend in Palm Springs?! Keep on reading for everything you need to know and more about this stunning desert oasis. I’m sharing all my top tips (what to do, where to stay, where to eat, etc) so you can craft your perfect Palm Springs itinerary too!

Palm Springs is your quintessential California desert town, perfect for chill girls weekends, wild bachelorette parties, romantic couple escapes, and everything in between. A big draw: it’s consistently beautiful with near-perfect weather — I don’t think we saw a cloud in the sky our entire visit! It’s one of my new favorite places in California , and we can’t wait to head back.

Weekend in Palm Springs: The Perfect Palm Springs Itinerary

I’d been wanting to get down to the desert for such a long time. But I honestly could never find the time (between Hawaii and Bali and San Blas … well, you get the gist)! So when international travel was just not gonna happen (I think we all know what I’m talking about), we finally found ourselves on a long weekend in Palm Springs.

And I knew we’d like it from the minute we arrived — it’s full of mid-century modern architecture, boozy weekend brunches, old Hollywood glitz and glam, epic pool hangs, and those chic desert vibes. I honestly couldn’t get enough of it.

If you’re looking for a design-focused city with palm tree lined streets, colorful accommodations, vintage shopping, and an all-around relaxing ambiance, you NEED to spend a long weekend in Palm Springs ASAP. A true mix of classic hipster vibes and that desert bohemian spirit. You’ll love it, I promise! Plus — there’s a whole lotta sunshine (and low humidity — thank the hair gods).

Weekend in Palm Springs: The Perfect Palm Springs Itinerary

People even tend to retire here (I’ve got some family here I can’t wait to see next time); it’s that amazing (we’re even talking about it… someday). It kinda reminded me a tad of Scottsdale, Arizona (which I LOVE) in a sunny resort destination kinda way.

So let’s get started — everything you need to know to plan the ultimate Palm Springs weekend getaway!

Logistics for your Palm Springs Itinerary

Weather and when to visit palm springs.

The good news — you can count on consistently sunny blue skies no matter the month. I mean, the sun shines more than 350 days a year (more than both Las Vegas and Arizona ), with rain extremely rare! Sounds like perfect weather to me! Did I mention it hardly ever rains?!

Weekend in Palm Springs: The Perfect Palm Springs Itinerary

But ohhhhh the temperatures — now, that’s another story. They SOAR into the triple digits come summer, so you’ll 100% need AC and the pool.

Temps stay high all throughout the fall, so you’ll wanna spend your weekend in Palm Springs from early-winter to mid-spring. The best time to visit is from November through April . It’s the most popular time to go so prices will be higher, but worth it to get away from the nasty desert heat.

We visited in late March and it was already pretty steamy (high 80s)! One way to combat this — do all your exploring in the morning, and spend the afternoon at the pool. That’s what we typically did, and it was the perfect balance of hot desert fun and splashing around with cocktails in hand at The Ace ’s pool parties.

Do note that Coachella is held in April, meaning hotel rates will skyrocket — you’ll wanna book exceptionally early!

Please, oh please, do not plan your Palm Springs weekend getaway during the summer. It’s way too hot to really do much of anything besides fry by the pool. It’s sweltering and days over 100°F are not uncommon. This is the desert we’re talking about! Plus, some shops and sites have limited off-season hours this time of year.

If you do happen to be visiting the area in the hot summer months, plan to be out and about in the evening once the sun goes down. The heat finally cools down a bit! And make sure to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

palm springs california trip

Fall is kinda just a continuation of summer (haha), with crazy hot temperatures (well into the high 90’s) and virtually all sunshine. It’s definitely more comfortable than summer, but just know you’ll still want/need lots of pooltime and drink liquids!

Winters aren’t necessarily a bad time to visit, but temps sometimes dip down into the mid-60’s, meaning it may not be hot enough for the pool (which is, quite honestly, one of the best things to do in Palm Springs). It’s actually peak tourism season in the desert, but I’d prefer to go more so in early Spring.

Weekend in Palm Springs: The Perfect Palm Springs Itinerary

Where is Palm Springs?

Palm Springs is located on the western edge of the Colorado Desert of Southern California, between Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto mountains. It’s in Riverside County, not terribly far from San Bernardino and Joshua Tree National Park . Unlike most CA hotspots, Palm Springs isn’t on the coast. The city is inland, a bit east of the popular SoCal cities you know and love — LA , San Diego , and Orange County .

And yup, it’s super close to Coachella, the home of that wacky music festival you’ve heard so much about!

How to Get to Palm Springs

Palm Springs is pretty close to other main hotspots in Southern California. It makes for the perfect getaway from both LA and San Diego, and all the spots in between. Coming anywhere from SoCal, it makes for the perfect weekend getaway to Palm Springs.

But from Northern California , a different story. Originally, we were thinking of making the long drive from San Francisco, but ultimately decided we didn’t wanna spend that many hours in the car so took a short flight (it’s far, see below!).

 • From Joshua Tree : 50 minutes | 35 miles
 • From Orange County : 1.5 hours | 95 miles
 • From Los Angeles : 2 hours | 105 miles
 • From San Diego : 2.5 hours | 140 miles
 • From Death Valley : 4.5 hours | 230 miles
 • From San Francisco : 8 hours | 490 miles

Palm Springs Weekend Getaway: The Best Palm Springs Itinerary!

If you’re coming from further afield, you’ll need to fly yourself over to California first. And thankfully, there’s a bunch of airports which’ll do! You can fly into Los Angeles (LAX) or Orange County (SNA) and then drive two hours, or fly into Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) itself. Look for flights into Ontario International Airport (ONT) as well, as I’ve heard flights can sometimes be cheaper.

The easiest option? Flying directly to PSP; it’s even been named as one of the least stressful airports in the world. Might as well leave all your stresses at home before you start your Palm Springs weekend getaway! But definitely look at all options if you’re trying to save on cost (I typically find less expensive airfare from SFO to LAX or SNA).

We chose to fly into Santa Ana (SNA) and made the 2 hour drive over to the desert, stopping at Roscoe’s in Anaheim for lunch and Cabazon to see the giant dinosaurs and try a delicious date shake.

How to Get Around

If you just wanna stay in the heart of the downtown area, you can get around with bike rentals and/or use Uber/Lyft. Most hotels have bikes for guests to use, with many being free of charge!

However, I recommend renting a car (or using your own if you’re driving to Palm Springs obviously). Some of the best hikes and activities are a bit out of town, so having a car will give you lots of flexibility. We personally loved having a car — especially since we took a day trip to Joshua Tree and spent a few mornings searching for Desert X art in the desert. Oh, and the Cabazon dinosaurs, Salvation Mountain , a colorful door tour , and the windmills! Okay, so I guess we really did use the car quite a lot!

Get the cheapest car rentals over here !

What to Pack for a Palm Springs Weekend Getaway

This is the desert, y’all! It gets HOT. But it cools off at night. And it’s super dry. So you’ll wanna be prepared for your weekend in Palm Springs.

Desert X 2021: My Favorite Art Pieces in the Desert

 • Slather on that sunscreen , the sun is strong over here. And on that note, I always like to take along some SPF lip balm to protect my lips as well.
 • Keep your eyes protected from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat and polarized sunglasses (like I said, the desert sun is powerful!)
 • Some bright bathing suits for the pool, coverups, and of course, pool sandals. A fun pool floaty never hurt anyone, either!
 • A portable phone charger ’s always a good thing to take along, no matter the trip! Never worry about your phone running out of battery! This one is super tiny and lightweight!
 • Your kindle or mini ipad to read by the pool
 • A reusable water bottle to fill up on that H2O (gotta stay hydrated, especially in the desert!)
 • These refreshing body wipes , for ya know, when you get all hot and sticky and need a little freshening up before brunch
 • Hydrating lotion and/or some cocoa butter for all that dry skin — I found my skin got especially dry after being in the desert and pool chlorine for a few days
 • If you’re doing any kind of hiking (whether that be close to Palm Springs or in nearby Joshua Tree ), make sure to bring along comfy sneakers . I swear by these — I have them in 3 colors!
 • Light, airy, and breezy clothes . But don’t be afraid to bring along bold and colorful clothing too — leave all your boring black and whites at home! Palm Springs is all about color and that popular retro, vintage style. I loved wearing colorful, floral dresses here!
 • Some fun accessories, like colorful hair scarves , a trendy straw bag , statement earrings , and cute espadrilles !
 • A camera to take lots of pretty photos (I typically use my iPhone and Olympus mirrorless )!
 • Lightweight jacket or sweater , as the desert drastically cools off at night (I was fine with a jean jacket — my exact one — but kinda wished I brought along a light sweater as well)

Palm Springs Weekend Getaway: The Best Palm Springs Itinerary!

Other Tips

 • Palm Springs is SUPER dog friendly ! We saw dogs at basically every single restaurant we went to, walking down Palm Canyon Drive (the Main Street in PS), and even hanging out at our hotel pool! I think we’ll take Kona down with us next time!
 • Check the weather for high temps. If there’s gonna be crazy high temps in the afternoon (very likely), do your main activities in the morning. Keep your afternoons free on your Palm Springs itinerary, and plan to cool off at the pool.
 • Make brunch/dinner reservations in advance. If there’s someplace you really wanna eat it, make a reservation in advance. Spots get booked up, sometimes even weeks in advance, so you gotta plan ahead. We made reservations for Birba, Pink Cabana, Norma’s, and Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey.
 • Despite being in the desert, there’s everything you need in town. Don’t go crazy if you forgot to pack something — you’ll easily find it!

Things to Do During Your Weekend in Palm Springs

I typically give my readers exact itineraries instead of just listing the main things to do, but Palm Springs is different. Nothing is too far away (except for the day trips of course), and you’ll really wanna plan your Palm Springs weekend getaway around the temperature. If it’s too hot, you’ll just wanna hang by the pool, meaning you’ll abandon your pre-made plans anyways.

Plan to do some fun Palm Springs activities in the morning, and let yourself sip some cocktails with your feet in the water come afternoon. Once the sun goes down, hit up Palm Canyon Drive for dinner and drinks!

Go on a DIY Palm Springs Door Tour

Palm Springs is kinda a mecca for their mid-century architecture and design. And the doors are no exception. We had such a great time searching around for all the colors of the rainbow — Yellow doors, bright turquoise doors, orange doors, lime green doors, pink doors, you name it!

palm springs california trip

You’ll definitely wanna check out the ridiculously popular That Pink Door (a Palm Springs IG hot spot). A true explosion of color in the desert. I have a whole post with exact addresses of all my favorite doors in Palm Springs , but if you head on over to the Indian Canyons neighborhood, that’s where you’ll find them all!

Andreas Canyon Trail in Indian Canyons

If you’re gonna do one hike in Palm Springs, make it the Andreas Canyon loop in Indian Canyons. Not only is it pretty easy at just around a mile (I even wore sandals, haha), but the views are like no other. You’ll see groves of spectacular California skirted fan palms, the Andreas Creek, and even a mini waterfall.

Palm Springs Weekend Getaway: The Best Palm Springs Itinerary!

Since the trail’s on land owned by the Agua Caliente band of the Cahuilla Indians, you have to pay for admission ($9 per adult), but I promise you, it’s more than worth it! A true oasis in the middle of the desert! I recommend heading here in the early AM before it gets too hot and too crowded (when we left there was a super long line of cars waiting to get in).

If you’re looking for longer hikes in the area, there’s others within Indian Canyons as well (Andreas Canyon just happens to be the easiest and shortest hike, so we thought it was appropriate for an already-hot March morning).

Visit the Cabazon Dinosaurs

If you’re driving from the LA/Orange County area, you’ll most likely pass by Cabazon (and if not, it’s only 20 minutes from downtown Palm Springs). This is the spot of those huge Cabazon dinosaurs! I’m sure you’ve seen a photo of them somewhere before. They get painted and decked out depending on the season and holiday — we saw a 65-foot-tall Mr. Rex ready for Easter and a pink 150-foot-long brontosaurus (named Dilly the Dinosaur) for Valentine’s Day!

palm springs california trip

A (free!) wacky roadside attraction, and only a few minutes from Hadley Fruit Orchards — the best place to get a famous date shake. Worth a quick stop even if you’ve only got a weekend in Palm Springs.

Moorten Botanical Garden

Have you ever visited a cactarium before? Well this one’s been around since 1938! We loved strolling through the botanical garden, and especially the greenhouse dedicated to smaller, unique cacti and succulent plants. Say hello to the desert turtles on your way out — we loved them!

palm springs california trip

We visited in the afternoon and it was pretty crowded (and terribly hot), so I recommend heading there when they first open if you’d like the place to yourselves. I love visiting family-owned businesses (like the winery in Fort Bragg ), and for a mere $5 bucks, I’d definitely go again! There were a whole bunch of handmade terracotta and glazed pots that, looking back, I wish I bought for my succulents at home.

Find art in the desert during DesertX

An outdoor art scavenger hunt in the middle of the Coachella desert? What could be better? We were SO lucky to catch Desert X 2021 on our last visit! The art show only happens every other year for a few months (typically Feb – May), so you gotta plan it right for this! Or just get lucky like we did!

Desert X 2021: My Favorite Art Pieces in the Desert

This year there were letter-shaped planters filled with indigenous plants, a massive 45-foot-high sign (mimicking the Hollywood Sign), large cloud and iceberg-like stones balancing on steel frames, and so much more. I’ll definitely be making it a point to visit for the next show in 2023. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, check out my full guide to Desert X here .

Hang at the Pool

Every day is a pool day in Palm Springs — think palm trees, pool floats, and of course, good vibes! In all seriousness, if you aren’t spending your afternoons at the pool, you aren’t doing Palm Springs right. And if you visit anytime between February and October, you’ll wanna jump right into that pool every chance you get. Because let’s face it — it’ll likely be at least 85°F when you visit.

palm springs california trip

We stayed at The Ace Hotel & Pool Club , which boasts two pools — a super-fun party pool with easy access to alcoholic slushies (yum!), and a quieter, more chilled out pool. If you aren’t staying at a hotel with a fancy pool, there’s a bunch which offer day passes (for a fee of course), meaning you can access some of the most exclusive and stunning resorts in the area without spending the night.

Here are some of the best pools with day passes for that ultimate Palm Springs weekend getaway:

 • Ace Hotel & Pool Club : $20-$30 per person
 • Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa : $25 per person (upgrades available)
 • Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa : $30 per adult (it’s a full on water park!)
 • The Saguaro Palm Springs : $20 per person
 • Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa : $30 per person

Palm Springs Windmills

If you’re driving on the 10, you really can’t miss them! It’s by far the largest wind farm I’ve ever seen, with over 4,000 windmills — providing enough electricity to power all of Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley. Whoa!

palm springs california trip

Interested in learning more about the windmills and wind energy? Take a guided tour of the farm! We didn’t have time for this (we simply just stopped by to snap a few photos), but I’d like to make it a priority for next time.

Looking for that iconic windmill IG photo? Head on over to W. Garnet Ave, or pop San Gorgonio Pass wind farm into your GPS.

Palm Springs Art Museum

Palm Springs is a Mecca for creatives, and that includes the Art Museum! There’s ever-changing art exhibitions, a vast permanent collection, and a huge theatre. Even the 150,000 square foot building is architecturally-significant — just look at it! And if that’s not enough, there’s 3 separate locations: the main art museum at 101 Museum Drive, the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center (a few minutes down the road), and Palm Springs Art Museum in nearby Palm Desert. So, lots to see!

I’m so bummed we missed this (definitely adding it to my Palm Springs itinerary for next time). I can’t wait to check out “History of Suspended Time” and The Aluminaire House (once it’s reassembled). Psst — if you wanna save some pennies for drinks at the pool, visit on a Thursday night (from 5-7pm) for absolutely free (thank you City of Palm Springs)!

Visit Sunnylands Center and Gardens

Had it not been for Desert X 2021 , we would have never known this place existed! And what a shame that’d have been.

Desert X 2021: My Favorite Art Pieces in the Desert

The grounds are immaculate, there’s cacti everywhere you look, and the history is just oh so interesting! Former president Obama and President Xi JinPing of the People’s Republic of China even met here in June 2013. You can even take a guided tour if you’d like and have the time.

If we didn’t have brunch reservations at the fancy Norma’s at The Parker, I think I could have wandered around for hours.

Palm Canyon Drive

If you’re spending a weekend in Palm Springs, you’ll undoubtedly find yourself on Palm Canyon Drive at least a few times! The whole street is gorgeous — it’s lined in palm trees! This is essentially the heart of downtown and the main street of the city, with tons of hip restaurants, unique shops, galleries, and a newly redesigned downtown plaza. We spent every night just walking around, discovering new shops to pop into and new places to hang.

palm springs california trip

Don’t miss the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, honoring over 400 accomplished and cherished celebrities (kinda like the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles ).

And if you’re looking for an eclectic piece for your home, unique boho clothing, and/or love creative independent stores, make sure to pop into Thick as Thieves and/or The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five.

Take a day trip to Joshua Tree

Wild and wacky Joshua Trees. Rugged rock formations and giant boulders. That arid desert landscape. You can’t visit Palm Springs without adding a day trip to Joshua Tree National Park .

Day trip to Joshua Tree itinerary

The park’s less than an hour away, and you can really see all the main highlights in just a day (including Skull Rock, Keys View, and the Cholla Cactus Garden). If you’ve got extra time, you can even visit the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Art Museum and Pioneertown! On my list for next time. Full guide to Joshua Tree in just a day here !

Drive down to Salvation Mountain

Beautiful. Bizarre. And completely unforgettable. Salvation Mountain is a true candy-colored fantasy world in the middle of the desert. And I couldn’t get enough of it. I’m sure you’ve seen it all over social media — it’s a super instagrammable spot a bit south of Palm Springs!

Palm Springs to Salvation Mountain, Slab City: Everything You Need to Know

The whole piece is oh so colorful, vibrant, folky, and overwhelmingly astounding. Kinda hard to put into words. Just go see it for yourself. ? And even better, it’s super fun to photograph! Since Salvation Mountain is roughly 1.5 hours away, you can easily make it back for an afternoon of pool time. If you’ve never seen it before, definitely check out my full guide to Salvation Mountain here!

Where to Eat in Palm Springs

There’s tons of noteworthy places to eat over here, but with only a weekend in Palm Springs, you won’t be able to dine at them all. Just the more reason for a return trip, am I right?! Here’s where we ate and what’s on my list for next time. Really something for everyone.

Breakfast/Brunch

 • Cheeky’s : Bacon flights and cinnamon rolls — what could be better? And plus, the same owners of Birba (below), so you know it’s gonna be good.
 • The Pink Cabana (at The Sands Hotel): Pink, chic, and popular with instagrammers (or anyone who appreciates good design). We came here for a late brunch one morning and I instantly fell in love with the interiors. My tacos weren’t bad either. 😉 Definitely plan to make a reservation in advance, it gets busy!

palm springs california trip

 • Norma’s at The Parker Hotel: It’s at The Parker — what could be wrong. Make sure you take a million pictures and of course, plan to stuff your face with the warm ricotta donuts… mmmmm. Again, you’ll have more luck making a reservation here. Perfect for a girls weekend getaway to Palm Springs, or a hip brunch/lunch with your significant other.
 • King’s Highway (at The Ace): I so wish we had brunch here one morning — those chilaquiles look bomb. But we did have our fair share of drinky drinks from the bar (the mango margaritas with chili powder on the rim were perfect on a hot day). And you won’t believe it, but this spot was formerly a Denny’s that was converted into a “redefined roadside diner”! How wacky!

Lunch/Dinner

 • Birba : Alfresco Italian dining at it’s best (just make a reservation because this place is popular, for good reasons). I would have eaten here every meal if I could. Don’t miss Nona’s meatballs, potato pizza, and pane. It was all deliciously orgasmic.
 • Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey: A trendy Japanese eatery and cocktail lounge — what could be better? We originally had a reservation here, but decided to cancel it. Why? I have no f-ing clue. Still on my list for next time.
 • Mr. Lyons Steakhouse: If you’re looking for a swanky steakhouse complete with a vintage vibe, look no further than Mr. Lyons! It’s upscale, it’s retro, and there’s hand-cut meats and classic cocktails. My husband would love this spot.
 • Bootlegger Tiki: Come for the drinks, stay for the tacos (and sriracha popcorn — yes, it’s a thing). It’s a Polynesian-themed bar with rum-filled fruity cocktails, so perfect on those super hot days (just remember to counteract the alcohol with some agua).
 • Colony Club Restaurant (formerly Purple Palm Restaurant): Wanna eat right by the pool? Expect new American fare in a classic vintage setting, serving an eclectic, seasonally focused menu.
 • El Jefe (at The Saguaro): Tacos at one of the most colorful hotels in Palm Springs? Don’t mind if I do. There’s tequila and there’s tacos, all served at the rustic, stylish cocktail bar at The Saguaro Palm Springs. Those baja fish tacos are calling my name.

Coffee and Snacks

 • Great Shakes: You NEED to come here. Even if you’re stuffed from lunch/dinner. I repeat, do not leave Great Shakes off your Palm Springs itinerary. Not only are there literally dozens of shake flavors to pick from, but they give you a mini donut on your straw! I mean, c’mon! We raced back from Joshua Tree one night just for this! And it was well worth it.
 • Ernest Coffee: By far the largest coffee shop in town. And it doesn’t disappoint. I’m talking, quality drinks that are handcrafted! Plus, there’s loads of pastries and other things for breakfast/lunch.

palm springs california trip

 • Koffi : Every time we attempted to grab coffee here, it was beyond packed. So it must be good, right? I heard the mint tea freeze is the way to go, so that’s 100% on my list for our next visit.
 • Kreem : The perfect spot for some artisan ice cream. The menu’s kinda small but you can tell the flavors are homemade. Plus, there’s ample vegan options for all you non-dairies out there! AND they even have a canine cup — ice cream for dogs!
 • Shop(pe) | Ice Cream & Shop: A cute little retro-theme ice cream shop with lots of trendy pieces in their shop. Tons of fun flavors, like sweet corn (what I got!), pomegranate, black sesame, and Mexican hot chocolate. They were giving out loads of free samples when we went, but I don’t think that’s a normal occurrence.
 • Cartel Coffee Lab: Looking for a hip coffeehouse serving up house-roasted brews? Yes, it’s a chain, but it’s chill and bohemian and sometimes exactly what you’re looking for.

Where to Stay

You’ve got an endless amount of options when it comes to where to stay in Palm Springs. There’s chic boutique hotels, spruced up roadside motels, rustic meets modern establishments, and even more posh resort-like spots than you can imagine. Here’s some of the best:

 • Ace Hotel & Swim Club : This is where we stayed! Expect classic hipster vibes and a wild pool party scene, which was oh so much fun. We spent tons of time chilling at the pool with mango margarita slushies, and really enjoyed the outdoor fireplace next to our front door at night. Feel free to take your little pup here — the hotel is super dog friendly (we even hung out with some cute pooches at the pool!). Read reviews and check prices here.

palm springs california trip

 • The Saguaro Palm Springs : By far the most colorful hotel in Palm Springs. While I haven’t stayed here before, I’ve heard others experiences weren’t the absolute best, so I recommend doing some extra research before booking a room here. But those photo ops — swoon! Perfect for your insta! Read reviews and check prices here .
 • Parker Palm Springs : Looking for those quintessential Palm Springs vibes? You need to stay at The Parker. With their wall of breeze blocks, bright orange-y red door, and stylish indoor space (the DRUGS sign!), it’s considered the most iconic 5-star boutique hotel in Palm Springs. Plus, there’s THREE pools (including an adults-only pool), the cutest lemonade stand imaginable, and roasted marshmallows. We went for lunch one afternoon and I couldn’t stop photographing the space! Read reviews and check prices here .

palm springs california trip

 • Korakia Pensione : If Greece and Morocco had a baby (two of my fave places in the world), Korakia Pensione would be it. It’s super upscale, and so much more serene than other hotels in the area. There’s bocce ball, classic movie nights, and even a record player in the room. A romantic spot for a quiet couples retreat — the perfect place to unwind! I think we’ll be staying here next. Read reviews and check prices here .
 • Skylark Hotel : We stayed here one night since we wouldn’t have time to use the amenities of the Ace, and were blown away by the Skylark. The rooms were HUGE (way bigger than our room at The Ace), the pool was chill and still magnificent, and the complimentary breakfast wasn’t half bad! And it was less than half the price of others we looked at. Definitely check this spot out if you’re looking for a less expensive option. Read reviews and check prices here .

palm springs california trip

 • The Sands Hotel : Yes, it’s a bit outta town (in nearby Indian Wells), but if you’re looking for a chic ADULTS-ONLY hotel, this is it! We went here for brunch one morning and I honestly couldn’t get enough of the space. The pool area looked divine (with lots of sun and shady spots), the grounds were immaculate, and I’ve heard the mojitos are top notch. Another place I’m dying to stay. Read reviews and check prices here .

Hope this helps you plan your ultimate Palm Springs weekend getaway! Are you a fan of the desert?!

What’s the best time to visit Palm Springs?

The best time to visit Palm Springs during the year is from October until May . In the summer, the valley experiences sweltering heat and dry weather, so make sure to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen. If you visit during the summer and plan on hiking, make sure to also get an early start on your hikes before the heat sets in! However, while it is generally sunny 350 days a year, the desert can get quite cold during the winter. Driving up into the surrounding San Jacinto Mountain Range or through Joshua Tree National Park, you may even get snow!

Palm Springs

The busiest season for Palm Springs is from March to May, during the festival season where flocks of people come to Coachella and Stagecoach . However, flights from most major cities in Canada and the US arrive at Palm Springs International Airport almost daily. Due to the number of flights from November-April, it is very easy to find deals.

Palm Springs Architecture

For those that don’t mind the drive, you can also look into flying into LAX instead and renting a car to drive to Palm Springs. It is only a 2-hour drive (depending on LA traffic) and may be cheaper or easier for some people to find deals this way.

A few facts about Palm Springs

The combined scenic mountain views with a mix of mid-20th century modern buildings give Palm Springs a distinct look that appeals to many with an appreciation for architecture and nature. The place has the largest concentration of midcentury modern architecture in the world. Modernism Week’s annual festival takes place each year in February and highlights the mid-century modern architecture, art, interior design, and culture in Palm Springs. It features more than 350 events open to the public, many of which are free to attend.

Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs

Greater Palm Springs lies within the Coachella Valley and actually is made up of nine cities in total. These cities are all linked by the way of Highway 111, which continues out towards the Salton Sea. The nine connected cities are: Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, and Coachella.

Palm Springs’ core downtown area consists of the famous Palm Canyon Drive. It features a number of cafes, retro-themed shops, and boutique hotels that maintain the old motel style. However, since the nine cities are all interconnected and very accessible by car, it is easy to access this main shopping area no matter where you stay. The canyons that run along the south-west of the city offer visitors multiple hiking opportunities and trails.

Palm Springs Architecture

Did you know that with over 50,000 pools, Greater Palm Springs can boast that it has more pools per capita than anywhere else in the country? Frank Sinatra’s former Twin Palms Estate in Palm Springs even boasts a famous piano-shaped swimming pool. In addition to pools, with over 100 renowned golf courses and 300+ sunny days each year, Greater Palm Springs certainly earns its reputation as a top destination for golf-lovers.

One Day in Palm Springs Itinerary

For first-time visitors in Palm Springs, there is no shortage of things to see and do! You could spend a week in Palm Springs and its vicinity and still not come close to seeing all this beautiful area has to offer. Even if you only have a day to visit, don’t be discouraged from trying to hit all of the key tourist spots first as many of them are still must-see spots. Here is an ideal itinerary for an action-packed day in Palm Springs California, from sunrise to sunset.

Start your day in a tram

A trip up the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway , which is the world’s largest rotating tramcar, is just what you need to start your day. You will get to travel over two-and-one-half miles along the cliffs of the Chino Canyon to the pristine wilderness of the Mt. San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness Area . During this ten-minute journey, tram cars rotate slowly to offer spectacular vistas of the valley below. The Tram’s Mountain Station at 8,516 feet elevation offers two dine-in restaurants, great viewpoints, over 50 miles of hiking trails, and a natural history museum.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway View

Alternative Option: If you don’t want to visit Joshua Tree or the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, then the Coachella Valley Vista Point offers great views of the entire Coachella Valley and is easy to access. Drive about five miles up Hwy 74 as it snakes its way out of Palm Desert and into the San Jacinto Mountains. On a nice clear day, you might see the north tip of the Salton Sea that lies to the southeast! There’s also a small visitor’s center for those wanting more information on the area.

Coachella Valley Vista Point, Palm Springs

Walk down Palm Canyon Drive

After this, make your way into old Palm Springs. Take a walk down Palm Canyon Drive and pop into some great shops to experience more Modernism-type art and retro vibes.

Ruddy's General Store Museum, Palm Springs

TIP: Find a cafe or ice cream shop and stop in for a “Date Shake”. These are vanilla milkshakes with dates from the multiple date farms located in the Coachella Valley. They may sound weird, but are delicious!

Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs

Explore the beautiful houses

From downtown Palm Springs, take a drive around some of the surrounding neighborhoods at the beautiful Midcentury Modern houses. People in Palm Springs take great pride in the upkeep and appearance of these houses. Keep an eye out for some of the beautiful houses that showcase colorful doors or retro cars as these often make great photo spots.

Midcentury Modern Houses, Palm Springs

Around this area, you can also find the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway . It is the nickname given to the iconic 1960 Alexander Estate that Elvis and Priscilla Presley had stayed in 1966. It’s not open for walk-in’s but you can book ahead for a tour .

Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway, Palm Springs

Check out the Air Museum

Finally, to finish off your one day in Palm Springs, you will need to spend a couple of hours of your afternoon at the Palm Springs Air Museum . Adjacent to the Palm Springs Airport, the Palm Springs Air Museum has an exceptional collection of WWII aircraft and flight memorabilia. Inside is a movie theatre and they even offer occasional flight demonstrations.

Palm Springs Air Museum

You can climb inside a functioning Boeing B17 Flying Fortress, a bomber extensively used against Germans during WWII. For any aviation-enthusiasts especially, a stop here is a must!

Palm Springs Air Museum

Have a fabulous dinner

After your busy day, it’s time to treat yourself to a great dinner. Two popular spots in Palm Springs are Las Casuelas Nuevas and the Schnitzelhaus .

If you feel like having Mexican food while in Palm Springs, the best place to visit is the charming, Las Casuelas Nuevas. This restaurant has been a true local favorite for the 40+ years that they have been serving Mexican in the Coachella Valley. The restaurant is in an older building with a beautiful atmosphere and a wonderful patio. The food is all priced quite reasonably, making it great for groups. They often even have live music in the evenings!

Las Casuelas Nuevas, Palm Springs

Or if you are in the mood for German you 100% need to visit Schnitzelhaus, located off of Country Club Drive! This is as authentically German as you can get in the Coachella Valley. It is not a large restaurant but is traditionally-decorated so you feel as if you are truly getting the full Bavarian experience. Even though the food is expensive, it is definitely worth it for the portions and quality!

After that, head back to the hotel to get a good night’s sleep! There are a number of great day trip options if you are looking to stay in Palm Springs longer.

Where to stay in Palm Springs, California?

If you’re looking for a true mid-century experience, then staying in one of the retro motels is highly recommended! There are numerous hotels/motels around the main part of the city and close to the main Palm Canyon Drive area. Many have an elaborate list of famous visitors, ranging from the 1930s and through the golden age of Elvis. Most hotels have been modernized and updated but have luckily still kept their original look that has changed little since the mid-1950s.

Del Marcos Hotel, Palm Springs

Del Marcos Hotel

Check out Motel 6 Palm Springs if you are looking for accommodation on the cheaper side that is still in a great location!

Day trips from Palm Springs

Joshua tree national park.

Just to the north of Palm Springs, you can find one of the United States’ most incredible National Parks, the Joshua Tree National Park . It is essential for any visitor to take the time for a beautiful drive through the Joshua Trees, distinct rock formations, and unique landscapes that the park offers. This otherworldly desert-scape makes you feel so far outside the city, but it only takes about an hour to drive to one of the main entrance gates. The varied landscape you’ll experience on the drive shows the contrast between the Colorado and Mojave Deserts that both make up the park.

Pioneertown

For fans of old western movies, a day trip from Palm Springs to Pioneertown in the Yucca Valley would be a great option! In 1946, Pioneertown was founded by a group of Hollywood actors and investors that dreamed of creating an Old West set that doubled as a town. Today, you can still visit Pioneertown and admire the 1880s-style facades. More than 50 films and television shows were filmed here throughout the years!

Salton Sea is also an interesting option for a day trip. A result of an engineering accident is surrounded by a few towns that have been almost completely deserted, but there is a museum here which you can visit. In any case, a very interesting destination.

Why Go To Palm Springs

Palm Springs, on the western side of the Coachella Valley and part of the Colorado Desert in Southern California, is far from being a dried-up destination. This desert oasis once lured the likes of heartthrob crooner Frank Sinatra and rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley. In fact, the King even took up residence here in the late 1960s, honeymooning with Priscilla. In the '60s, glamorous piano bars and midcentury storefronts lined the vibrant streets of the desert town, which is beautifully bookended by the San Jacinto Mountains.

Hollywood stars first arrived in the 1920s for film locations or weekends away. Today, Palm Springs is a hub of midcentury modern architecture – some former celebrity homes are even vacation rentals. Its pools, spas and restaurants , many with outdoor seating, are attracting a wide swath of visitors, from families to LGBTQ travelers . Plus, the surrounding Coachella Valley has blossomed with interesting things to do , from The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens to the Coachella Valley Preserve . What's more, its colorful sunsets rival those on the coast, and the desert scenery should not be missed. But if you want a true Palm Springs experience, you should take it easy, whether by the pool or in a trendy bar. In short, a visit to this California city should be on your getaway list. If Palm Springs passed muster for Hollywood’s stars, then it should be a great mix of fun and relaxation for today’s travelers as well.

Palm Springs Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Palm Springs is between January and April when the weather is the most hospitable. Remember: The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is a popular event held each April. Fall's temperatures are almost as nice, but unless you love the heat, we wouldn't recommend visiting in the summertime when daily highs regularly reach the triple digits.

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

You're in the desert If you plan on exploring, whether that's through hiking, mountain biking or riding all-terrain vehicles, bring a travel companion and plenty of water, and make sure to watch out for poisonous snakes and wild animals.

Summer brings closures Some restaurants and attractions shut down or limit their hours in July and August due to the incredible heat and lack of tourism.

See Joshua Tree Take a side trip to Joshua Tree National Park , which is about 38 miles east of Palm Springs for scenic drives and hiking.

How to Save Money in Palm Springs

Visit in July, August or September You'll sweat it out, but you'll save money on hotel rates and even restaurants this time of year.

Come during the week In the winter, many hotels and resorts boost their rates on the weekends, so plan the bulk of your visit between Monday and Thursday.

Check for deals For discounts on restaurants, accommodations and activities, visit the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism's deals page .

Enjoy the freebies Each Thursday, Palm Canyon Drive shuts down to vehicular traffic for VillageFest, a free street fair.

What to Eat

Palm Springs boasts a varied dining scene with options ranging from French to German to vegetarian; you'll find most of these establishments huddled together in the downtown area on North and South Palm Canyon and Indian Canyon drives. Cheeky's is a popular place for breakfast, brunch and lunch, but be prepared for a wait at this much-beloved restaurant. Casual lunches, meanwhile, are best enjoyed at affordable locales like Bill's Pizza Palm Springs and Sherman’s Deli and Bakery . You can also pick up fresh, seasonal produce, meats and more at the Coachella Valley Certified Farmers' Market , which is hosted every Saturday morning at the Palm Springs Cultural Center parking lot (outdoors from October to May) or the Palm Springs Pavilion (indoors between June and September).

Once the sun sets, sit down for a fancy French meal at the top-rated Le Vallauris or dinner and a show at Michael Holmes' Purple Room . Note: Some restaurants close during the summer months, so call ahead for opening hours.

Getting Around Palm Springs

The best way to get around Palm Springs is by car. Although you can walk most places downtown, you'll need your own wheels to explore the rest of the Coachella Valley. You can also take the bus to reach certain destinations throughout the city and beyond, or you can always hire a taxi or ride-hailing service. The easiest way to get from Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) – located 3 miles east of downtown Palm Springs – is to hop in a taxi, arrange a ride-hailing service or rent a car.

No matter where in Palm Springs you turn, expect to find palm trees, desert mountains and blue skies.

21 Best Things to Do in Palm Springs California You’ll Love

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 25/03/2024

In the heart of Southern California lies Palm Springs, a desert oasis that beckons with its blend of natural beauty, history, and modern luxury. Famed for its palm-lined streets, soothing hot springs, warm weather and a backdrop of the rugged San Jacinto Mountains, this city offers an escape combining relaxation and adventure.

In addition to its natural beauty, Palm Springs is full of stylish and quirky things to do. From the world’s first rotating tram car to drag queen brunches and outstanding street art there are so many great things to do in Palm Springs California that I think you’ll love.

I will start this article with what I consider to be the five best things I did whilst in Palm Springs . I’ll then take you through some of the other options available to help you plan the best possible Palm Springs vacation.

21 Best Things to Do in Palm Springs California

Let’s start with my personal top 5 best places to visit in Palm Springs California.

1. Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

First opened in September 1963, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the world’s largest rotating tram car. This means visitors receive 360 degree views over the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs.

aerial tram

The tram travels over two and half miles along the cliffs of the Chino Canyon and lands at Mt San Jacinto State Park at an elevation of over 8,500 feet. This means it is generally between 30 and 40 degrees cooler at the top than on the desert floor.

aerial tram

Start your journey on Tramway Road in Palm Springs North. The tram journey takes 10 minutes and the trams run every hour between 10am and 8pm. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with some amazing views. You’ll also find:

 • Over 50 miles of hiking trails through Mt San Jacinto State Park
 • A small natural history museum
 • Two theaters showing State Park and tram construction videos
 • Two restaurants
 • Cocktail Lounge

I enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Peaks Restaurant. This is the more upmarket option of the two restaurants at the top. Peaks serve both lunch and dinner. I recommend going to dinner as I was able to enjoy fantastic food whilst watching the sunset over Palm Springs.

aerial tram

As always, it is a good idea to book your ticket for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway ahead of time. When you book your ticket, you will also choose a time.

2. Relax at The Spa at Sec-he

Sec-he is located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. It is an ancient hot mineral spring that emerged from the ground over 12,000 years ago. This is how Palm Springs came to be known as Palm Springs. The spring is cared for and protected by the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians.

spa sec he

A major renovation of the structures around the spring was completed in 2023 and the site is now known as the Spa at Sec-he. I have visited many spas in my time and this is one of the best. There is 73,000 square feet of space, all dedicated to relaxation and rejuvenation. Not only does the Spa at Sec-he feature the opportunity to take the ancient springs, but it also has some of the most cutting-edge spa equipment I have seen.

spa sec he

A Taking of the Waters Day Pass gives visitors access to all spa amenities including a private Taking of the Waters bath experience. There are 22 private mineral baths at the Spa at Sec-he sourced form the spring at 105 degrees.https://www.tiktok.com/@boutiqueadventurer/video/7303875536303000865

spa sec he

The facilities are stunning. Choose from the main pool with its waterfall feature or the zero-edge mineral pool. There are day beds and cabanas by the pools designed to be the perfect place for relaxing.

spa sec he

The Spa at Sec-he is also home to a mix of classic and cutting edge therapies in its 15 treatment rooms including:

 • Quartz gemstone treatment tables
 • Chromatic light, infrared heating, and grounding pads on the massage treatment tables
 • Facials are administered on wave tables
 • a grounding room with zero gravity loungers
 • an acoustic wellness lounge for audio therapy
 • menthol dry sauna
 • eucalyptus steam room
 • two halotherapy salt caves
 • cryo-therapy chamber
 • IV Nutrient Therapies

I loved my private mineral bath and the grounding room. Visiting the Spa at Sec-he was one of the best things I did in Palm Springs.

3. Visit Indian Canyons

The Indian Canyons comprise Andreas Canyon, Murray Canyon and Palm Canyon. They sit at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains and cover around 60 miles of hiking trails. Despite Palm Springs desert climate, the canyons contain streams and lush palms. And all of this just a few miles from downtown Palm Springs.

palm canyon

I visited Andreas Canyon and Palm Canyon. Andreas Canyon is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is home to more than 150 species of plants and absolutely beautiful. The Andreas Canyon Loop is considered easy and covers 1.2 miles. The Maynard Mine Trail is considered strenuous and runs for 6 miles round trip.

andreas canyon

Palm Canyon is home to the world’s largest naturally occurring oasis of Washingtonia Filifera Palm Trees, and they are quite a sight. The Canyon runs for 15 miles and can be used for hiking, horseback riding or picnics. The Palm Canyon Trail covers all 15 miles and is considered to be quite an easy walk.

palm canyon

Indian Canyons has admissions fees which can be paid at the trail head at the Indian Canyons Toll Gate, 38520 S. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs . Check the website for ranger-led walks. Visitors are not permitted to stay in Indian Canyons overnight.

4. Visit Palm Springs Art Museum

Founded in 1938, this museum is one of the top tourist attractions in Palm Springs. The Palm Springs Art Museum’s main location is in the heart of downtown Palm Springs near the Marilyn Monroe statue. It houses a mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions and of course the building itself is a stunning example of mid-century architecture.

This innovative museum is home to 28 galleries, two sculpture gardens, four classrooms, resource centers, five storage vaults, an 85-seat lecture hall, a 433-seat theater, a gift shop and a restaurant. The Frey House II is part of the museum and is located just behind it.

The Palm Springs Art Museum is constantly running events so check the website before you visit.

5. See the Catci at Moorten Botanical Gardens

You really don’t want to leave the desert without experiencing at least one cactus garden. Moorten Botanical Garden is a private arboretum in South Palm Springs. It was established in 1938 and contains a huge variety of desert plants from all over the world.

moorten

There are more than 3,000 plant varieties in the gardens. It is extremely photogenic and well worth a visit.

6. Enjoy the Street Art

Art is everywhere in Palm Springs. Palm Canyon Drive contains loads of concrete benches that have been painted in various styles. Utility boxes have been converted into works of art. Here are a few more key pieces of public art in Palm Springs:

Rainmaker Fountain, created in 2000 by David Morris, is located at 500 N Palm Canyon Drive

There is only one of the “Babies” sculptures left in Palm Springs and it is located near the Palm Springs Art Museum. David Cerny’s “Tower Babies” came to Palm Springs in 2018 on a temporary loan.

The blocks around the Palm Springs Art Museum regularly feature short-term public art exhibitions. And don’t miss the classic statues of Lucille Ball and Sonny Bono downtown.

7. Visit the Palm Springs Visitor’s Centre

This iconic building by Albert Frey is instantly recognizable due to its distinct soaring roof. The Palm Springs Visitor’s Center contains everything you would expect a visitor’s center to contain. The architectural significance of the building is the key point of difference for this visitor’s center. And some public art around the center makes for nice photo backdrops.

8. Go Shopping

Palm Springs is a fantastic place to shop. There are loads of unique and quirky stores. At the north end of Palm Springs check out The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five. This is a collection of luxurious shops (fashion and home) in an iconic E. Stewart Williams building.

shops at 1345.

Shag is the place to go for kitsch Palm Springs design souvenirs and artworks.

shag shopping

My favorite store in Palm Springs was Trina Turk . They had some of the most fabulous bathing suits and cover ups I have ever seen. I went home with two new pairs of swimsuits and a new cover up.

9. Get Your Photo Taken at the Marilyn Monroe Statue

Forever Marilyn is a 26 feet tall statue of Marilyn Monroe designed by Seward Johnson. Marilyn is rendered in the classic post from The Seven Year Itch movie, where a gust of air blows up her white dress. This stainless steel and aluminum is now probably Palm Springs’ most iconic landmark. No trip to Palm Springs is complete without a picture under or next to Forever Marilyn.

marilyn statue

The statue is located downtown near the Palm Springs Art Museum. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time for the most attractive photographs but do remember it is a popular photo spot.

10. Walk the Palm Springs Hollywood Fame

As you explore the heart of Palm Springs, make sure to take a walking tour along the Palm Springs Walk of Stars along Palm Canyon Drive. This celebrated sidewalk honors not only Hollywood’s finest but also notable local leaders, humanitarians, and civic icons who have made significant contributions to the growth and reputation of Palm Springs. Celebrities with stars include Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and Elvis Presley.

11. Visit the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center

The Palm Springs Art Museum I mentioned earlier in this article has several locations, once of which is the Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion. The center resides in a restored mid-century modern building. It runs various educational and community programs and rotating exhibitions highlighting design elements from the 20th century to the present.

The museum store offers a unique experience as it is situated in the original bank vault of the former Santa Fe Federal Savings & Loan Association.

12. Go to a Drag Brunch

If you’re looking for something different to do in Palm Springs, why not head to a Drag Brunch ? Apparently, Drag Brunches are now quite popular but I went to my first one in Palm Springs at The Saguaro Hotel.

drag brunch

Two set menus were on offer, as were a la carte options. We enjoyed granola parfait, nachos and breakfast sandwiches. And, of course, bottomless mimosas were available.

drag brunch

But we weren’t there for the food. We were treated to several numbers by our drag queens and they were quite amazing. I could have sworn Celine Dion was in the room! The performers are not shy so if you don’t want any attention, it is best to sit away from an easily accessible seat.

drag brunch

And it is standard practice to “tip” the performers with small (or large) bills, so make sure you bring some cash. And there are photo opportunities with the drag queens at the end of the performance.

13. Relax at the World’s Largest Weed Lounge

Four Twenty Bank Dispensary and Lounge is the largest and only cannabis concert lounge and dispensary in the world. It is in the heart of downtown Palm Springs and popular with locals.

4 20

The lounge has a custom air filtration system to keep things as fresh as possible and also sells CBD and THC infused drinks (no alcohol). Pop in for a relaxing smoke or attend one of their live music events.

14. Enjoy an excellent Mexican Meal at El Mirasol

los arboles

My best meal in Palm Springs was at the fantastic Mexican restaurant El Miarsol. This family owned business opened its first branch in Palm Springs in 1985. I ate at its second branch, which is inside its boutique hotel, Los Arboles. This is classic Mexican made with the freshest ingredients and was fantastic.

Open Wednesday-Sunday

15. Grab a Pink Coffee at Cafe La Jeta

The Flannery Exchange is a cute mixed-use workspace on Palm Canyon Drive that is home to the super cute Cafe La Jeta and its gorgeous pink coffee cups. Their gorgeous outdoor patio is a popular spot for locals and the good coffee and breakfast offerings keep them regulars.

cafe la jeta

16. Tahquitz Canyon

Like the Indian Canyons I mentioned earlier in this article, Tahquitz Canyon is part of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. It is best known for its rock art and the 60 foot tall Tahquitz Waterfall. The canyon offers a 2 mile loop walk that leads visitors to this beautiful waterfall. You’ll also see plenty of native wildlife and plants along the way.

Tahquitz Canyon

The Tahquitz Canyon Visitor Center is located at the entrance to the canyon. Find out more by watching the Legend of Tahquitz video and don’t miss the observation deck.

The canyon is open daily from 8am to 5pm. Overnight stays are not allowed.

NB: The trail to the falls and back will have you gain 350 feet in elevation. It is steep, has many rock steps and has little shade. There are no restroom facilities or water fountains. It is considered to be a strenuous trek.

17. Visit Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is a remarkable desert destination located approximately one hour from Palm Springs. This national park uniquely combines the Mojave and Lower Colorado deserts. Here are some of the best things to do in Joshua Tree National Park as a day trip:

 • hike one mile round trip to Arch Rock
 • see Skull Rock
 • visit the petroglyphs
 • the famous Joshua Trees are located in the Northern part of the park, which is the Mojave Desert

Start your visit at one of the park visitor centers. Here, you can gather maps and gain insights into the park’s trails and attractions. Pay your entry fee at the North entrance.

joshua tree park

The main park road is accessible to all vehicles and guides you through various viewpoints. Remember, a 4WD vehicle with high clearance is advisable for off-the-beaten-path exploration.

18. Coachella Valley Preserve

The Coachella Valley Preserve is a protected area spanning approximately 17,000 acres 10 miles east of Palm Springs. It’s a haven for the unique Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard, a species not found anywhere else in the world. The preserve features the Thousand Palm Oasis, nourished by water seeping from the San Andreas Fault.

Here are some of the hiking trails in the Coachella Valley Preserve:

 • Moon Country Trail : Experience diverse terrain and potentially spot some local wildlife.
 • Hidden Palms Trail : Discover another serene oasis amidst the arid desert.
 • McCallum Trail : A relatively easy hike leading to McCallum Pond, an ideal spot for a peaceful break.

19. Palm Springs Air Museum

This aviation museum in Palm Springs focuses on World War Two. The Palm Springs Air Museum is a living history museum that opened in 1996. Today, the museum has five hangars and is home to over 70 vintage static and flying aircraft. The museum also has a gift shop, library, theater and cafe.

20. Agua Caliente Cultural Museum

Located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, this 10,000 square foot gallery is the best place to gain an understanding of the history and culture of the Agua Caliente people. The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum has five exhibition areas that tell the story of the Agua Caliente. The museum also holds regular events and there is a store.

The dreamy little retro oasis known as Palm Springs is nestled alongside the San Jose Mountains in Southern California. A one-time home away from home spot for old Hollywood stars like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Liberace, this desert town is a fabulous vacation destination.

My husband and I love this city so much that we’re heading back this summer for another quick getaway. From incredible midcentury architecture, a fantastic food scene, majestic natural beauty, and a hopping nightlife, there are copious sights and experiences to enjoy. It’s also a great place to relax, unwind, and have a cocktail or three by the hotel pool.

Here is my firsthand account of how to spend a long weekend in sunny Palm Springs, California.

 • 11 Simple Money Habits to Learn From Minimalists to Streamline Finances for a Richer Life

In today’s fast-paced consumer society, the art of minimalist living offers more than just a decluttered home – it presents a pathway to financial serenity and empowerment.

Minimalism, at its core, is about stripping away the non-essential to make room for what truly adds value to our lives. This philosophy extends powerfully into the realm of personal finance, where minimalist habits can lead to a healthier, more mindful approach to money.

By adopting certain financial practices championed by minimalists, anyone can experience the profound sense of freedom and control that comes with financial simplicity.

From prioritizing experiences over possessions to embracing the discipline of budgeting, the money habits of minimalists are not just strategies for saving; they’re transformative steps towards a more purposeful and enriched life. Here are some minimalist money habits that anyone can benefit from.

In minimalism and design, “white space” refers to the unoccupied areas in a physical space, design composition, or schedule. The metaphorical concept represents any area free from clutter, noise, and unnecessary distractions. It emphasizes the power of simplicity and the intentional absence of excess.

Take the time to allow for empty space in your home and schedule for a clearer mind and environment.

 • Minimalism vs Simple Living: Understanding the Key Differences

Minimalism and simple living are two popular lifestyle choices that have gained much attention recently. Both lifestyles focus on living with less and finding contentment in what you have rather than constantly seeking more. While there are similarities between minimalism and simple living, there are also some key differences that set them apart.

Minimalism is a lifestyle that involves intentionally simplifying your life by eliminating excess possessions and focusing on what truly matters. It is about finding joy in the things that matter most rather than being bogged down by clutter and material possessions. Minimalism can be a great way to reduce stress and increase your overall sense of well-being.

The Best Free Camping Near Palm Springs, California

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on April 23, 2024

Free camping might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Palm Springs, but the best options aren’t far away!

Whether you’re exploring Joshua Tree or taking in the city’s art and architecture, there’s a comfortable, complimentary campsite nearby with your name on it.

Today, we’re showcasing some of the best free camping near Palm Springs, California.

Let’s get into it!

The Palm Springs welcome sign flanked by bright pink flowers and lush palm trees.

Why Should You RV in Palm Springs?

Many know Palm Springs as a SoCal getaway for the rich and famous. After all, Hollywood royalty has flocked to this desert oasis since the 1920s.

While the town is packed with gourmet restaurants, high-end boutiques, and palatial mid-century modern homes, it also offers plenty of attractions for budget travelers. Weekly community events like VillageFest attract locals and visitors alike. Meanwhile, you can stroll through botanical gardens, admire local artwork at the city’s many galleries, or simply walk the streets and soak in the vibe.

Most people visit from fall to spring to avoid the heat of summer, when the average high temperature is well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

When you get here, you’ll find tons of hiking opportunities in the surrounding public lands, including Joshua Tree National Park, San Bernadino National Forest, and Mount San Jacinto State Park.

Pretty much everyone can find something to love about this destination. So, check out our list of the best free camping locations in Palm Springs!

palm springs california trip

#1 Santa Rosa Yellow Post Sites

Perched high atop Santa Rosa Mountain in San Bernadino National Forest, you’ll find 14 primitive campsites suitable for both RVs and tents. There are rarely crowds here, but the spots offer unbelievable sunsets, sunrises, and views of the starry night sky.

Don’t expect any amenities aside from fire rings and a couple of water taps throughout the property.

To get here, take Highway 74 to Forest Road 7S02. This 11-mile route can be tough to traverse. We hear it’s only suitable for vehicles with high clearance and four-wheel drive. It often closes in winter, when snow and ice make it dangerous for travel. For up-to-date information, you can call the nearby Idyllwild Ranger Station.

Find It Here: 33.537651, -116.459053

Learn about the Best Budget-Friendly Attractions in Palm Springs .

#2 Chiriaco Summit

When it comes to boondocking near Joshua Tree, it’s hard to beat Chiriaco Summit. Located behind the General Patton Museum, this spot is close to plenty of amenities. However, there aren’t any on-site. Despite being close to I-10, most people say the traffic noise isn’t too bad.

Once you pass the museum, start looking for the Free Dry Camping signs. The camp host will likely be there to greet you and direct you to appropriate spots for your rig. We hear RVs up to 40 feet had no trouble with the spacious back-in pads.

Sites at this privately owned property are only available for seven days at a time. The campground is wide open and easy to access, and you can admire the massive tanks located on the parcel.

Find It Here: 33.663864, -115.723976

#3 Painted Canyon

Painted Canyon is an idyllic locale surrounded by the Mecca Hills. The scenery here is stunning, with staggering rock faces all around. You’ll have access to the Painted Canyon Trail, which includes ladders, steep ascents, and breathtaking views.

This desert camping destination is ideal for summer when the threat of rain is low. It’s located in a wash and can become dangerous during and after storms. No matter when you visit, you should only attempt to camp here with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. It’s easy to get stuck in the soft sand, otherwise.

Be aware that part of Painted Springs Road is on Native American land. Camping there is prohibited. You’ll have to continue on until the route makes a hard turn to the north.

While there aren’t any amenities here, this boondocking spot is only a few minutes from Joshua Tree National Park.

Find It Here: 33.619301, -116.000076

Here are the Most Dangerous Creatures in Joshua Tree National Park .

#4 North Joshua Tree BLM Land

Joshua Tree and the surrounding area offer some of the best free camping near Palm Springs. Just north of the park, there’s BLM land where you can overnight for free up to 14 days.

This location is a dry lake bed with plenty of space for big rigs. Once again, you’ll want to avoid this area during or after rainstorms, as flash floods are possible. However, this spot is a great alternative to camping in the park in the dry season.

To get here, take Sunflower Road to Cascade Road and look for the vast open expanse. The roads can be hard on your vehicle. We suggest only attempting this trek with a 4×4.

Find It Here: 34.172932, -116.224663

A long-exposure image of Joshua Tree National Park at night.

#5 South Entrance of Joshua Tree

Our final free camping destination near Palm Springs just might be the best. This is a prime-time boondocking spot located just outside the south entrance of Joshua Tree.

While this campground is wildly popular, you should still have plenty of room and sites to choose from. It’s on BLM land, so you’ll have to limit your stay to 14 days, even if you’d prefer to move in permanently.

Sites have firepits but no other amenities. However, you’ll be a short drive from all the luxuries of Joshua Tree National Park. The Cottonwood Campground is only minutes away and includes potable water and a dump station, which you can use for a few bucks.

You’ll need to watch out for sandy spots where it’s easy to get stuck. Some folks opt to pull off on the side of the road rather than trekking to established campsites. Either way, we suggest visiting in a four-wheel-drive vehicle to be safe.

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new list of One, Two, and Three Key hotels in the United States. In this first ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington DC were eligible for the distinction. This announcement of the most outstanding hotels in the country comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in the United States includes 11 Three Key hotels, 33 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Here’s everything you need to know . Or, head below to look at all the Keys.

Highlights of the United States 2024 Key Hotel List

The Aman New York — New York, New York

The Three Key Club in New York City

Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Click the links here to explore the whirl of colors and collage of art that define the Crosby Street (Soho) and the Whitby Hotel (Midtown). Also read: Every Three Key Hotel in Paris

Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.

The Chicago Athletic Association — Chicago, Illinois

Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels.
