Peter Frampton at 73: ‘Never say never’ attitude, dazzling guitar work launch U.S. tour

The once curly-haired, golden boy of rock ’n’ roll returned to Meijer Gardens for a sold-out, tour-starting show Monday – nearly five decades after his first West Michigan appearance.

Just a year before recording the album that would become one of the best-selling live collections of all time – turning Peter Frampton into an international superstar – the British guitarist uncorked many of the same iconic songs for a robust crowd at the domed Grand Valley State Colleges fieldhouse in Allendale.

The handsome, golden-haired 24-year-old guitarist – following opening sets by Spooky Tooth and Montrose during the June 22, 1974, tour stop – delivered audience-pleasing renditions of “All I Want To Be (Is By Your Side)” and “Do You Feel Like We Do,” even completing a searing guitar solo without a hiccup even though he broke a string midway through.

It was proof of the engaging, ultra-gifted musician and singer’s rock savvy and future as a guitar hero, after paying his dues with Humble Pie.

Fast forward (almost) exactly 49 years to Monday night at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, when the now 73-year-old guitarist returned to the outdoor amphitheater and, yes, revisited many of the tracks from “Frampton Comes Alive” that made him globally famous and cemented his status as a rock legend.

And despite an ongoing battle with the degenerative Inclusion Body Myositis that atrophies his muscles (and had him announcing a farewell four years ago), Frampton’s 2023 “Never Say Never Tour” kickoff in Grand Rapids was nothing if not an energetic, triumphant statement by a guitarist whose vocal and instrumental skills clearly remain prodigious and relevant.

With a sold-out crowd of 1,900-plus (mostly baby boomers) on hand, the multi-platinum-selling guitarist and singer used a cane to take the stage and remained seated for the entire 2-hour-and-20-minute concert that began with “Lying” from 1986’s “Premonition” and wrapped up with an encore that featured Humble Pie’s “Four Day Creep” and “I Don’t Need No Doctor” and a surprising, emotion-rending version of The Beatles’ and George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

What the top-shelf band lacked in energy from staying seated rather than roaming the stage it more than made up for with tight, loud and rousing renditions of songs from Frampton’s extensive catalog, enhanced by colorful and historic images on a video backdrop.

REALLY COMFORTABLE ON STAGE, LOVING MEIJER GARDENS

“The whole reason behind doing some of these numbers we’re doing is that I had quit because I thought I was not going to to be able to play anymore because of my fingers,” Frampton told fans early on.

“Whatever I have, a muscle disease, it has given me more time, it’s progressing so slowly. It’s quite amazing what an audience and never-give-up attitude will do.”

Indeed, that “never-give-up” mentality gave West Michigan fans another opportunity to cheer a gifted guitarist’s rock and blues acumen, highlighted on an absolutely perfect-weather Monday night by “All I Want To Be,” “Can’t Take That Away,” “(I’ll Give You) Money” (trading sizzling guitar leads with bandmate Adam Lester) and “Do You Feel Like We Do,” which had the entire amphitheater standing and singing along.

Frampton also dedicated songs to late bandmate John Regan (“Lines on My Face” and Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell (“Black Hole Sun”), while clearly reveling in his return to the stage and Meijer Gardens’ scenic milieu.

“I’m really comfortable up here,” Frampton gushed at one point. “It’s probably because you’re all smiling.”

Smiling because Frampton proved Monday that he’s not nearly ready to pack his guitar away – a decision enthusiastically reinforced by his fans – with 27 more concerts ahead on his summer tour, release of a “Frampton@50” vinyl box set in late July and work on a follow-up to his 2020 “All Blues” album.

“I’m going to keep on playing and saying, ‘Never say never,’ ” he proclaimed before leaving the stage. “We love it here. What a crowd.”

Ultimate Classic Rock

45 Years Ago: ‘Frampton’ Shows Peter Frampton the Way to Success

Released in March 1975,  Peter Frampton 's fourth solo album, Frampton , gave the former Humble Pie guitarist the tools he needed for his breakthrough a year later.

After three pleasant pop-rock albums that had failed to dent the top half of Billboard 's 200 Albums chart -- and didn't chart at all in his native Great Britain -- his career, which started as a teenage guitar prodigy in the Herd, was at a crossroads. It didn't help that rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Andy Brown left Frampton’s band after just one year, as did bassist Rick Wills, who had played on Frampton's previous solo efforts.

Instead of folding, Frampton recruited a new bassist, Andy Bown, and they, along with longtime drummer John Siomos entered Gloucestershire’s Clearwell Castle in October 1974 with Ronnie Lane ’s Mobile Studio parked outside. The band's leader also rose to the challenge, composing his finest set of songs to date and augmenting them with inventive arrangements and some of the best playing he ever committed to vinyl.

Frampton shows of the breadth of its namesake's influences, now subsumed into a seamless mix of acoustic and electric guitar textures, including a liberal dose of a new weapon in Frampton's arsenal, the talkbox. The double-tracked guitars on the catchy arena rocker “Nowhere’s Too Far (For My Baby)” are grittier than elsewhere on the album, and the twanging riffs and clangorous chords can trace a through line to Hank Marvin, the Shadows' guitarist who was a major influence on many British rock guitar heroes.

Frampton’s descending triplets and clean-ringing harmonics on the funky country-rock shuffle “Fanfare” show how much he'd absorbed from gypsy jazz master Django Reinhardt, whom he discovered through his father's record collection.

“He’d put on Django Reinhardt and Hot Club de France,” Frampton told this author in 2014. “Each time he would put that album on, it would take me longer to leave the room, until I never left. .. I've learned various different passages from Django, and then it goes into my library of licks and notes. It doesn't sound like Django, but it's totally inspired by his gypsy soul. I'd like to think that I've got some of it somewhere from all the listening I've done.”

Still, the standouts on Frampton are the four tunes that went on to greater fame a year later on  Frampton Comes Alive!    “Penny for Your Thoughts” may be the slightest of these songs, but it’s no less enjoyable. It’s a spiraling whirligig acoustic guitar workout, with bucolic bluegrass overtones that shares a similar feel with Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen’s “Embryonic Journey.”

“We were right at the end of mixing the record, and I said that I had this little bit that would be cool to stick on,” Frampton told MusicRadar’s Joe Bosso in 2011. The tune became an acoustic staple of Frampton’s set starting in 1975.

On Frampton and in concert, “Penny for Your Thoughts” dovetails into “(I’ll Give You) Money.” The stomping mid-tempo rocker is the record's hardest-hitting song, with grimy riffs and squealing fills that hearken back to the guitarist’s Humble Pie days. By the song’s end, Frampton’s double-tracked guitars have gone spinning off into spiraling riffs over a thundering drum pattern that recalls Led Zeppelin ’s “When the Levee Breaks.” During a soundcheck at Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park in New York, Frampton came up with the song’s main riff, he told Bosso. “I started playing it and people were pretty blown away, so I knew I had something.”

But the best two songs on  Frampton would soon become more famous. On “Show Me the Way,” Frampton’s talkbox seems distant from the rest of the song, his vocals feel more forced and the production is more cluttered with the talkbox popping in and unexpected. None of this detracts from the power of the tune. Acoustic guitar textures dovetail into electric riffs and talkbox tearaways. It’s a cascading string of pleasures, where every section of the song is a hook.

“Show Me the Way” was surpassed in cultural cachet by “Baby, I Love Your Way.” Frampton’s jangling, strutting guitar interpolates plangent fanning strums as a hooky verse tumbles into and even catchier chorus. Harmonized sustained notes thread through the melody as the song culminates in a gently pinwheeling solo. It’s easy to hear why this song, above all others by Frampton, became the songbook standard.

Although "Show Me the Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way" and "(I'll Give You) Money" continued his lack of success on the singles chart, Frampton managed to hit No. 32 on the album chart, easily his best placement to date.

To tour for the new album, Frampton and Siomos went on the road with guitarist-keyboardist Bob Mayo and bassist Stanley Sheldon. This is the band that recorded Frampton Comes Alive! at a series of summer and fall 1975 shows at Winterland in San Francisco, the Long Island Arena in Commack, N.Y. and on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

That record finally broke Frampton, selling 8 million copies and delivering three Top 20 singles, including "Show Me the Way" and "Baby, I Love Your Way." But because of some poor decisions, such as starring in the misbegotten film adaptation  of the Beatles '  Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band , Frampton could not sustain the success spawned by his live double-disc behemoth.

Frampton has joked that when his time comes, obituaries will lead with Frampton Comes Alive! , along with a variation on the title “Frampton Drops Dead!,” it’s clear the guitarist has made peace with capturing his distinct brand of lightning in a bottle – one of the biggest-selling live albums of all time, and the studio album that paved the way for its runaway success.

Peter Frampton's Camel

While legions of fans first became enamored with Peter Frampton in 1976 with the release of the brilliant Frampton Comes Alive, just three years earlier, Frampton had released Frampton’s Camel on A&M Records on October 20, 1973.

When Peter Frampton was labeled the Face of ’68 by Rave magazine he was with The Herd, a pop-oriented band who nevertheless produced some classy singles. In April 1969 Frampton left the Herd to form the “supergroup” Humble Pie with Marriott on guitar and vocals, Jerry Shirley on drums, and Greg Ridley on bass. After four albums Frampton quit Humble Pie in October 1971 to go it alone, releasing the appropriately titled Wind of Change the following year.

Listen to Camel now .

He then formed Frampton’s Camel to tour the US in support of his debut – their first public appearance was at The Academy of Music, New York in September 1972 supporting The J Geils Band. In December 1972 the band went into Electric Lady Studios in New York to begin recording the album that became Frampton’s Camel .

A movable feast

Frampton’s band was a movable feast throughout the early 1970s, but at this time it was future Blockhead and former Animal Mick Gallagher on keyboards and Hammond B-3, bass player Rick Wills (formerly with Cochise and later with stadium rockers Foreigner), and American drummer John Siomos, whose credits by this time had included the brilliant “Hello It’s Me” with Todd Rundgren. For this album, Frank Carillo, an American musician who had also played on Wind of Change , was drafted in to play acoustic guitar and backing vocals.

I Got My Eyes On You

Frampton’s Camel is classic early 1970s rock, but with a difference. It includes some outstanding melodic songs – always a trademark of Peter’s career. The album opens with the funky “I Got My Eyes On You” written by Frampton, and while it is very definitely “of its time,” it is completely indicative of what made both this album and Frampton so appealing. “All Night Long” is one of the two co-written songs on the album; this one features Gallagher as well as some gorgeous guitar work. It was also one of the two tracks released as a single, but it failed to dent the charts on either side of the Atlantic.

An ear for great songs

Track 3 is the familiar (that is, if you came to Peter via Frampton Comes Alive ) “Lines on My Face,” a trademark Frampton ballad with a tingling guitar solo and an emotional vocal. It’s followed by “Which Way The Wind Blows” that harks back to the gentler side of Humble Pie and their country-rock influences with the addition of another sumptuous melodic guitar solo. It was also released as a single at the time but also did nothing on the charts.

Frampton has always had an ear for great songs to cover, and on this album, it’s Stevie Wonder ’s “I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)” that had been released on Talking Book a couple of months before Frampton’s Camel entered the studio. It closes side one of the original LP and imbues the original with something fresh, no mean feat when covering Stevie Wonder.

Which Way The Wind Blows

Side 2 of the LP opens with “White Sugar,” a definite nod to the Stones and their classic “Brown Sugar” in title and in something of the feel of the track that has a great piano solo from Gallagher. “Don’t Fade Away” is a return to the melodic rock ballad style that Frampton is so good at. Similarly, “Just the Time Of Year” emphasizes what a very good songwriter Frampton had already become.

Ready to step into the spotlight alone

The album closes with “Do You Feel Like We Do,” written by the entire band, and a track that would go on to become one of the standout cuts on Frampton Comes Alive , where it also closed side 4 of the double LP. What’s not to love about this track? It is easy to hear why it translated into such an excellent stadium rocker. A great riff allows it to build and build, and that Gibson rings out loud and clear.

Ultimately, with no hit singles, Frampton’s Camel struggled to sell in large numbers after its release in October 1973, although it did eventually make No. 110 on the Billboard chart where it hung around for half the year. In retrospect, it obviously deserved way better, and with the benefit of hindsight, it’s the solid, grounded stepping-off point for Frampton’s subsequent success. His songwriting and guitar playing had matured so much by this point, giving him the confidence perhaps to step into the spotlight alone and assume superstar status.

Yes, it is true that “Frampton Comes Alive” was my into to the man’s great music. A few friends and I collected as many of his works as we could get our hands on, in the days before an easy internet search. I owned and loved this album and many others. Frampton is still a genius guitarist and his recent works are definitely worth a listen. I was privileged to see him perform on his Comes Alive tour back in the 70s, and I was able to see him again in 2008 at Interlochen, Michigan. He is still a masterful writer, guitarist, and performer! Thank you for this wonderful trip down memory lane!

Here is what I admit. I listened to this album and every other one before “Comes Alive” ever came out. These are still in my rotation every year and I know these by heart. I saw Peter 2nd row at the Baltimore Civic Center when he started touring to support “Frampton.” He opened for Ten Years After an blew them away. The studio albums were always superb. For those like myself who appreciated the studio music first the success of “Comes Alive” was a mixed bag because few understood the quality of the recorded music it was based on. So happy that nearly 40 years later a few of you are finally getting around to what Peter was about before all the fame. “Comes Alive” is a great live album but the studio work is better and on top of that they are superb recordings.

I’d been a fan since ‘Winds of Change’ and spent a lot of time trying to make people understand what a great artist he was. ‘Comes Alive’ was probably one of the greatest ‘Told Ya So!’ moments of my young life. Saw him in ’74, ’76, ’77, ’92, and mid ’90’s and he never less than great. Keep rockin’ Peter!

Humble Pie’s Smokin album will always be a favorite. Framton Comes Alive is just a masterpiece. Thanks Peter.

I too am a huge fan of the FIRST 4 for several reasons. The intricacy of technique is really showcased with these lovelies, that we just do not get to hear during the LIVE cuts. There are so many songs on these albums that are just so fantastic. ‘Don’t Fade Away’, my personal favorite for that awesome guitar solo, just blows my mind everytime I listen to it. If you came up on these LP’s, FCA will surely take a second seat to them because of the partiality we feel with them… and then of course, there is the loyalty issue that one feels having known Frampton’s work before all the hype! Somehow I feel more legitimized as a fan than those who discovered his music after the Live one. I want to scream out… Listen to ‘The Lodger’… listen to ‘Fig Tree Bay’… all of ‘Something’s Happening’ is pure magic… finally ‘Frampton’… Nowhere’s Too Far’ and Money? Great, great stuff here on these babies… my babies… they hold a very special place in my heart simply for the memories and the era, aside from the masterful execution of solid rock driven, flawless guitar playing! Yea… these are always within reach when I go to put in a Frampton CD.

Had “Wind of Change” and “Camel” when they came out. Most friends said they really liked this guy, who is he? My God didn’t everyone in the world listen to Humble Pies’ Performance at the Fillmore?

My all time favorite musician.I was lucky to see that band by chance at the Academy Of Music in 73 and immediately Frampton became my fav because his show was unique in a mellow yet rocking.I enjoyed how he would sit on a stool and play his acoustic favorites.A very underrated guitar player. My favorite song is ‘Line on my Face’.Since 73 I have probably seen him 50 times.Actually liked him before’ Frampton Comes Alive’ success changed him for a while and he has a long road back.He credits good friend David Bowie for helping snap out of his slump post my least favorite album ‘I’m in You’ yuck.Tkday I enjoy him as much as I did in 73′.Peace to all the family of friends.

At the age of 10, Peter played in a band called The Little Ravens. He and David Bowie both went to Bromley Technical School and would spend lunch breaks together, playing Buddy Holly songs. The Little Ravens and Bowie's band, George and the Dragons, played shows together. When he was 11 years old, he played in the Trubeats before joining The Preachers, a band that Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman produced and managed.

Peter became a successful child guitarist, and in 1966 he became a member of The Herd, landing three British Top 10 hits. He was also named The Face of 1968 by Rave, a teen magazine.

In 1969, when Peter was 18 years old in 1969, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie with Steve Marriott.

Peter met Pete Drake in 1970, on George Harrison’s session for his All Things Must Pass album.  Pete introduced Peter to the "talk box" which would become one of Frampton's trademark guitar effects. In 1972, Peter's solo career debut Wind of Change was released, with guest artists Billy Preston and Ringo Starr.

Peter released a whopping 6 albums in this decade: Frampton's Camel was released in 1973 and Somethin's Happening was released in 1974. In 1975, Frampton was released and rose to #32 in the US charts, and was certified Gold by the RIAA. In 1976, Frampton Comes Alive! was released and became a best-selling live album with hit singles "Baby, I Love Your Way," "Show Me the Way," and "Do You Feel Like We Do". In 1977, I'm In You was released and went platinum

In 1978, Peter starred in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with The Bee Gees, Aerosmith, Billy Preston, George Burns and others. Later that year, Peter was in a near-fatal car accident in the Bahamas.

Peter received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1979 and that same year, Where I Should Be was released.

Peter Frampton Rallies For Rock Hall Induction During ‘Never Ever Say Never’ Tour Stop In L.A. [Photos/Videos]

Call it a faux pas, if you will, but Peter Frampton hasn’t been shy about sharing exciting news with audiences during his Never Ever Say Never tour; specifically, that the legendary English guitar hero is (finally) on the ballot for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame .

During his rain-filled April show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, Frampton took time out of his set to not only tell his fans about it, but encourage them on the spot to vote for him. He and his crew went so far as to project a QR code for the ballot onto a giant screen onstage, with his band playing the Jeopardy! theme while attendees cast their votes.

Shameless? To some, perhaps. But there’s no denying that the soon-to-be-74-year-old deserves a spot in Cleveland’s hallowed halls.

The roaring success of Frampton Comes Alive —one of the best-selling live albums of all time—would be enough to make a case on its own. That the album spawned a series of classic rock staples and propelled Peter as a talk box pioneer only further cemented his legacy. So much so that he was able to celebrate a whopping 60 years of touring with his latest go-round. Yet, despite being eligible for the Hall since 1990, Frampton is only now in the race for induction.

Campaigning aside, for those who witnessed Frampton’s performance near Griffith Park, he left no doubt that he belongs in any and every rock pantheon.

First and foremost on display was the indomitable spirit that has long propelled Frampton through his career. An ongoing battle with inclusion body myositis (IBM) has left him reliant on a cane to walk on and off stage—and kept him from the usual theatrics of a pre-encore exit. The rain and frigid (for L.A.) temperatures added to the challenge, both in terms of the guitarist’s own state and the scattering of the crowd.

But rather than bow to circumstance, Frampton played on from his seat and did so with the enthusiasm, charisma, and craft that have been his trademark for more than 50 years.

He pulled liberally from the portion of his catalog that coincided with the height of his fame in the 1970s. He opened with “Golden Goose” from 1974’s Somethin’s Happening , later doubled back to that album for “I Wanna Go to the Sun”, dropped in “I Got My Eyes on You” and “Lines on My Face” off of 1973’s Frampton’s Camel , and called on 1975’s Frampton for “The Crying Clown”, “Nassau”, and “(I’ll Give You) Money”. He even dug all the way back to Winds of Change , his solo debut in 1972, to play “All I Want To Be (Is By Your Side)”.

To be sure, those weren’t the only hits that Frampton performed from the prolific period that preceded his near-fatal car accident in the Bahamas in 1978. But, for all intents and purposes, iconic tracks like “Baby, I Love Your Way”, “Show Me The Way”, and “Do You Feel Like We Do” might as well be the property of Frampton Comes Alive  since it was that live album that put Peter and those songs on the cultural map.

The last of two that unbeatable trio of songs offered the guitarist ample opportunity to delight fans with his signature work on the talk box. With “Do You Feel Like We Do”, in particular, he closed out the main set by thanking the crowd for sticking out the weather, all tuned by his guitar and talk box. At no point did Peter use the tool to greater effect, though, than during his cover of Soundgarden ’s “Black Hole Sun”. His pseudo-robotic rendition of the late Chris Cornell ’s vocals was nothing short of enthralling—as was Peter’s pure guitar work on the song.

That was hardly the only cover that wound its way into the setlist. Peter’s aforementioned plea for Hall of Fame votes preceded his instrumental version of Ray Charles ’ “Georgia (On My Mind)” (which was, itself, a cover of the same song by Hoagy Carmichael and His Orchestra). Immediately after that, Peter welcomed his son, Julian Frampton , onstage to sing “Rebel Rebel”, originated by Peter’s friend and former schoolmate, David Bowie . And while playing songs from his former band might only qualify as quasi-covers, Peter’s rendition of “Shine On”—another ditty made all the more famous by Frampton Comes Alive —was no less compelling.

The three-song encore consisted exclusively of covers as well. He dug deep into his blues guitar bag and pulled out Ida Cox ’s “Four Day Creep” and Nickolas Ashford ’s “I Don’t Need No Doctor” before ending the evening with The Beatles ’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

When (or whether) Peter returns to the road after this now-completed tour remains to be seen. That will likely depend on how his battle with his degenerative muscle disease proceeds from here. Then again, his diagnosis in 2019 spurred what was billed as a farewell tour that same year. Fortunately, Peter was able to get back to playing live thereafter, even in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whatever the future holds, there are but two certainties for Peter Frampton: He will turn 74 on April 22nd and, with the help of those who turned out for his shows this time around, he will hear his name called in Cleveland very soon.

Peter Frampton on His Rock Hall Induction: ‘My Phone Hasn’t Stopped Blowing Up’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

After three decades of eligibility where he didn’t appear on a single ballot, Peter Frampton was starting to think he’d never be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . But once voters finally had to chance to select him earlier this year, things changed very quickly. He learned the good news over the weekend when his manager phoned him up to say he made it. “I was absolutely blown away,” Frampton says. “My mind has been sort of a blur ever since I found out, especially since the announcement [on American Idol ] last night. My phone hasn’t stopped blowing up since.”

The afternoon after the news broke, Frampton spoke with Rolling Stone about the Hall of Fame, his fellow inductees, what he’s planning for the big night, upcoming tour plans, his battle with inclusion body myositis, and his hope that Cher changes her mind and shows up on induction night.

The thing that blew me away the most was not actually getting in — even though that is a phenomenal, unbelievable thing. It’s the amount of people who voted for me [in the fan vote]. You don’t quite understand where you’re at until you look at the amount of people who voted for you. Those are the people I need to thank the most. That was a real wonderful shock.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

I think part of the problem is that rock critics had a huge voice in the nominating process for a long time. You had such an insanely big record in the Seventies, and it attracted so many young fans, that you maybe turned off some critics. Yeah. Sometimes you can be too big. Hootie & the Blowfish, same thing. You have this ginormous selling record, and it works against you. It becomes too much of a good thing. Framptom Comes Alive! turned into Rubik’s Cube very quickly. Look what happened to that. But I can open one of those very quickly now since I’ve learned the secret.

Had you attended an induction before last year? I went when Metallica got in. It was a much smaller event in those days compared to last year’s. I’ve watched every one, all the inductees over the years, whether it be live or on film. I always thought, “Maybe… Who knows?”

It’s a cool class this year with Cher, Foreigner, Dave Matthews, Ozzy… It’s very cool. I think because of the new team that’s running it, headed by John Sykes…having known a little bit and spoken with some of them, things were not that realistic before…there were a lot of missed opportunities before, and some artists that weren’t maybe ready to go in.

Ozzy Osbourne on Rock Hall Induction: 'I'm Happy I'm Alive To See This'

Lou gramm on foreigner's long-awaited rock hall induction: 'justice has been done', kool & the gang sang 'celebration' when they learned they entered the rock and roll hall of fame.

I loved seeing John Mayall’s name. He really deserves it. Absolutely. There I was in the front row of the Flamingo Club in London watching him and Eric Clapton, and him and Peter Green. I would always go up there. He has always been a champion of so many incredible guitar players, as well as being this guy that never faltered, never went commercial, never did anything but the blues. I applaud him for that. He very much deserves to get in.

There’s also people that grumble about R&B and hip-hop artists getting inducted. To me, it makes perfect sense to bring in Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest. Maybe it should be called the Music Hall of Fame as opposed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They’re king of stuck now. But I agree. Mary J. Blige is an unbelievable talent. They definitely both deserve to get in.

Shortly before she was placed on the ballot, Cher basted the Hall of Fame and said she wouldn’t go even if she got in. I’m hoping she changes her mind. Oh, go on, Cher! We want you there. It’s okay. Look at how long I waited. I didn’t wait as long as you, but it’s okay. You’re in now. You’re in! Come on, Cher! [ Laughs ]

Do you have any thoughts on who might induct you or what songs you might play? Not right now. I haven’t been told. The basic thing I need to be told is how long musically I have, and how long speech-wise I have. And then I can make those decisions. I obviously have people in mind, but I haven’t spoken to anybody yet.

It’s going to be in Cleveland, which is pretty cool since it’s a great rock town, and you have so many fans there. Oh yeah. I’ve always loved Cleveland. I did my time in Cincinnati for a while. I lived there. They can’t take the Ohio out of me.

How do you think it’ll feel to stand at the podium, take the award, and finally give your speech? Oh, my stomach turned over when you said that. [ Laughs ] I don’t know. I’ll prepare for that moment. With great gratitude, I’ll step up to that microphone and accept what I never thought would happen for me.

You just finished a tour a few weeks back. How did that go? Fantastic. In fact, it looks like we’re going to do another two-week run sometime in the summer. I don’t have any info right now. It’s been incredible going back out after I quit. [ Laughs ] I think the crowds are so behind me since I don’t want to give up. I am a fighter. I’m going to be playing until that time comes when I can’t.

We all have our battles. We’re all fighting something. I’m just a person who is out there, doing the best he can, and brining awareness to IBM [inclusion body myositis], raising money where I can. We’ve got a lovely foundation at Johns Hopkins, the Peter Frampton Fund . People are still sending in money, which is wonderful. It’ll help us with clinical trials. Those are expensive. I’m raising money for them so we can find that magic bullet.

I’m very optimistic. I’m speaking with my doctors all the time, and hearing all the new stuff that’s coming along, and the new technologies the scientists are finding in the lab. It looks like something could be coming around the corner. We’re always hoping for that.

If your voice works and your hand works, why shouldn’t you be onstage? Exactly. I really want to share my time between three things right now. I have a record to make. I’ve been writing for six years or more. I have material up the yin yang. But only a few classics. [ Laughs ] I’m waiting a little longer, another month or two, and then I’m going to go in the studio.

In June, I’m going to England to do some stuff for my documentary. We’re going to go back to where I was born, and where I went to school with David Bowie, and the house where my brother and I grew up. We were doing some interviews with people last week in Los Angeles for the doc. We now have full funding. It’s full steam ahead. Those three projects are what we’re working on this year.

I would love to see Soungarden get in too. Oh my God. They’re not in?

Not long after Peter Frampton settled in downtown Nashville in 2011, his adopted neighborhood slowly yet surely morphed into the bachelorette-party capital of America. The legendary rock musician, who just marked his 60th year of touring, is no stranger to celebratory atmospheres. (His latest Never Ever Say Never tour kicked off on March 3 in Greensboro, North Carolina.) But when Frampton kept close to home during the pandemic, “the huge double-decker buses…just got so noisy from Thursday through Sunday.”

Frampton readied to relocate to a more peaceful condo nearby, until a new companion convinced him otherwise. That would be Bigsby, the service dog who for the last several years has supported Frampton as he adapts to life with inclusion body myositis (IBM). “I had decided to move, but in the interim I got Bigsby and I realized that living in an apartment wasn’t going to be the best thing,” he recalls. Extra confirmation of that hunch came with a visit to the home of friend and interior designer Robin Rains in a bucolic part of Nashville: “Robin has land and Bigsby was just beside himself. I saw him running free and thought, Oh my god, I’ve got to move. I needed a backyard, I wanted my privacy.” Rains had done work for Frampton previously, and without hesitation he commissioned her eponymous design studio to collaborate on this prospective project. “Peter very much has his card deck of people he works with, and he goes back to them,” Rains says of the trust she and Frampton have in one another.

Navigating a competitive marketplace, Frampton ultimately found a newly constructed house not far from Rains. The residence suited Bigsby, and it was big enough to accommodate visits from Frampton’s human family, which in December expanded to include a second grandchild. It just required tailoring to his specific needs and point of view. “Any time you work with a spec house, you’re really trying to make the space unique and memorable,” Rains says of the assignment, on which she was assisted by her in-house designer Jenna Miller.

Rains peeled back the interior architecture before making a mark. “We eliminated things we deemed unnecessary to get to a cleaner aesthetic,” she says of the removal of existing trim and lighting. Wood planks and Venetian plaster were then applied to ceilings and walls, and the entry as well as multiple closet doors were replaced, to crystallize the property’s European farmhouse identity.

Simultaneously, Rains removed larger chunks of the house to accommodate Frampton’s IBM. He specifically feels symptoms most around the knees, as his guitar-licking digits have resisted the autoimmune disease. “Stairs are my worst enemy,” says the musician, “[so] obviously we put in an elevator.” Exercise is one of the few clinically proven ways of slowing and reducing disease activity, and the retrofitted lift takes Frampton to an upstairs gym where he works out six days each week; “Bigsby snoozes while I exercise,” he says. The remaining second-floor rooms encompass a two-bedroom apartment with an office, reserved for guests, which is largely decorated in the previous condo’s furnishings.

Because he planned to spend most of his day downstairs, Frampton asked Rains to focus her attention on a suite of ground-floor rooms that includes a music room and studio—the latter converted from a den—in addition to a primary bedroom, kitchen, and family room. In these spaces, Rains says, IBM informed design choices. “We needed to think about how easily [Frampton] could get up from a sofa, so we customized those to be a little bit taller without necessarily looking like it,” Rains cites as one example. “We also used vintage chairs, but only pieces with arms and tight seats, and we put the kitchen’s coffee station close to the family room because Peter’s coffee is important. Attention to daily living was something we had to keep in mind with everything.”

At the same time, Frampton wanted the renovation project to celebrate his family and personal style rather than merely accommodate his condition. “I didn’t think I had any specific taste, and don’t get me wrong, I knew nothing,” he prefaces. “But Robin told me that we think along the same lines, and she showed me what can be done and has taught me so much about design.” Rains isn’t quite so convinced of that narrative, however, noting that Frampton’s eye is as laser-focused on style as functionality. “Peter doesn’t like clutter; pieces need to be meaningful to him, and he wants to feel at rest at home,” the designer observes. Mission accomplished.

While many of the possessions from Peter Frampton’s condo were moved to the second floor of his new house, the musician asked interior designer Robin Rains to give pride of place to his long-treasured Pablo Picasso portrait, which was shot at his La Californie villa by Irving Penn in 1957. Rains mounted the artwork over a custom iron bench upholstered in Holland & Sherry’s Patagonia mélange wool flannel .

“I’ve lived in New York and Los Angeles, where people meet up and say, ‘We must get together and jam.’ Here, you do ,” Frampton says of Nashville’s music community. “He was so excited by his porch,” Rains says of indoor-outdoor space, which features Palecek lounge chairs, a Lee Industries outdoor sofa, multiple antiques, and a wall-mounted sculpture by husband-and-wife artists Cor Oda and Kit King. “It was important to create artistry and uniqueness to reflect Peter’s anticipation of dining and playing guitar there, but he also uses the space to stash his grandchild’s toys and let Bigsby lay on the stone.”

Peter Frampton, 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, used to call Cincinnati home

T his year's crop of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees is stacked with legendary performers, from Cher to Mary J. Blige and Jimmy Buffett. And several have graced Ohio 's concert venues over the years.

Rock legend Peter Frampton , though, carries a more personal tie to the Buckeye State: He was a Cincinnati resident for over a decade.

Born in Beckenham, England, Frampton first rose to fame as a member of British rock bands The Herd and Humble Pie in the '60s. He then found success as a solo artist, with his breakthrough 1976 album "Frampton Comes Alive!" claiming best-selling status that year and entering the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2020.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Frampton, 74, joins the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after 26 years of eligibility as a solo artist.

“I think I’m a little bit in shock, and speechless,” Frampton told Billboard about being inducted. “I never expected this. People always said, ‘You should be in.’ ... So mixed emotions, because it’s something that I just never expected, whereas other people did for me."

A look at Peter Frampton's Cincinnati ties, two legacies

After revealing his diagnosis of an incurable muscle disease in 2019, Frampton played what some thought would be his last show in Cincinnati that summer at Riverbend Music Center. It was part of his Peter Frampton Finale, The Farewell Tour.

Frampton, who called Indian Hill home from 2000 to 2013 before moving to Nashville, embarked on the tour after being diagnosed with inclusion body myositis (IBM) four years prior. A condition marked by muscle weakness, inflammation and fatigue, the artist intended to perform his farewell tour while he could still play guitar.

“You are the biggest crowd of every amphitheater that we played on this tour,” he said during his 2019 Cincinnati show that drew a crowd of 10,000, according to a Riverbend spokesperson at the time.

Frampton also reminisced about Cincinnati during the concert, per a 2019 Enquirer article . He shared his affection for the Graeter’s in Mariemont, and he said he had crushed some of the ice cream backstage.

“I had to loosen my belt a notch,” he joked. “I always look forward to coming here to Cincinnati, because it has been my home for many, many years.”

Frampton defied odds a few years later, returning to Riverbend as part of his Never Say Never Tour in June 2023.

“To say that Peter has made history in music and in medicine is accurate in every way. He has now two legacies,” Frampton’s rheumatologist, Dr. Lisa Christopher-Stine, told The San Diego Union-Tribune this month.

After his 2023 tour, the veteran guitarist announced a spring 2024 run with shows from March through April.

"I don’t want to give up my passion and will play as long as I physically can. Hope to see you in 2024," Frampton wrote on X on Dec. 1, 2023.

Where to watch the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony

The ceremony to honor the new Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class will take place Oct. 19 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland. It will stream live on Disney+ and will air on Hulu the next day. There will also be an airing on ABC at a later date.

Bob Heil, Whose Innovations Enhanced the Sound of Rock, Dies at 83

A groundbreaking audio engineer, he provided the large-scale systems that brought tours by the Who and the Grateful Dead to life.

A black-and-white photo of Bob Heil, a man with shoulder-length hair and a light-colored short-sleeved shirt, stands next to a piece of audio equipment.

By Alex Williams

Bob Heil’s career as a groundbreaking sound engineer who brought thunder and rich sonic coloring to tours by rock titans like the Grateful Dead and the Who began behind a pipe organ in a 1920s movie palace.

Mr. Heil, who helped usher rock into its arena-shaking era by designing elaborate sound systems that allowed rock juggernauts of the late 1960s and ’70s to play at volcanic volumes, first learned to appreciate the full spectrum of musical tones as a teenager, when he took a job playing the massive Wurlitzer pipe organ at the opulent Fox Theater in St. Louis.

“We had to voice and tune 3,500 pipes, from one inch to 32 feet,” he said in a 2022 video interview with the audio entrepreneur Ken Berger. “Voicing taught me to listen. Very few people know how to listen. Listening, you’ve got to mentally go in and dissect.”

Mr. Heil died on Feb. 28 of cancer in a hospital in Belleville, Ill., his daughter Julie Staley said. He was 83. His death was not widely reported at the time.

Although he worked behind the scenes, Mr. Heil was enough of a force that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland credited him with “ creating the template for modern rock sound systems” In 2006, the Hall installed a public display containing his mixing boards, speakers and other items.

“The concert business became what it is today because he made the experience so much better for the customers,” Howard Kramer, who at the time was the Hall of Fame’s curatorial director, said in an interview that year with The Houston Chronicle. “No one made the leaps in live sound that he did.”

Mr. Heil got started in the business in 1966. Up to that point, top rock ’n’ roll bands often had to rely on feeble sound systems that were drowned out by screaming fans. That roar, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones wrote in his 2010 autobiography, “Life,” was often so deafening in the band’s early days that audiences could hear nothing more than the drums: “We used to play ‘Popeye the Sailor Man’ some nights, and the audience didn’t know any different.”

Mr. Heil gave rock shows the sound arsenal they needed. “We were the first company back then to build a package P.A .,” he said in a 2008 interview with the audio magazine TapeOp. “You could come to Heil Sound in 1972 and leave the facility with a complete system: snakes, road cases, everything — even a modular mixer.”

He also put a distinctive stamp on 1970s rock with the Heil Talk Box, an effects pedal that transformed guitar parts and vocals into an interstellar drone. Joe Walsh used it in memorable fashion on his hit “Rocky Mountain Way” in 1973, and the Talk Box was a signature of Peter Frampton’s monster-selling 1976 double album, “Frampton Comes Alive!”

Mr. Heil’s career took a major turn in 1971, he told Mr. Berger, when a manager for the Who frantically called him in St. Louis, asking if he could get his crew to Boston the next day. The opening show there, part of the band’s tour in support of its hallowed album “Who’s Next,” had been a disaster, with one newspaper noting that the band’s “soaring brand of rock could not be heard” under the venue’s “miserable conditions.”

Roger Daltrey, the band’s lead singer, threatened to fly back to England until Mr. Heil arrived with his rig. When Mr. Daltrey “did the sound check,” Mr. Heil recalled, “it was OK, because it was a monster P.A.” He would work with the Who for the next decade.

Robert Gene Heil was born Oct. 5, 1940, in St. Louis, the elder of two children of Robert and LaVerna (Bills) Heil. His parents owned a clothing shop in the small town of Marissa, Ill., about 40 miles east of St. Louis.

As a youth, Bob not only played the accordion and the organ but also became a ham radio enthusiast, which gave him an early opportunity to fiddle with electronics. After graduating from Marissa Township High School in 1958, he spent time studying at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and the St. Louis Institute of Music.

In 1966 he opened Ye Olde Music Shop in Marissa, where he rented Hammond organs and repaired instruments for professional musicians. He also began to design his own audio systems.

Before long, he was supplying them to country acts like Dolly Parton and Little Jimmy Dickens as they came through St. Louis. His big break came in 1970, when management of his old employer, the Fox Theater, called him and told them of a crisis: The Grateful Dead was set to play there, but the band’s P.A. system had been confiscated by authorities in a drug raid.

On a subsequent call with Mr. Heil, Jerry Garcia, the band’s lead guitarist and vocalist, “almost dropped the phone” when he learned that Mr. Heil had a sophisticated system featuring an amplifier by McIntosh, the high-end audiophile brand, Mr. Heil told Mr. Berger. Performing Musician magazine later called the resulting concert “the night that modern live sound was born.”

In addition to his daughter Ms. Staley, Mr. Heil is survived by his wife, Sarah (Benton) Heil; another daughter, Barbara Hartley; a stepson, Ash Levitt, the president and chief executive of Heil Sound; a sister, Barbara Schneidewind; and seven grandchildren. Both daughters are from his first marriage, to Judy Mortensen, which ended in divorce.

By 1980, Mr. Heil had grown weary of life on the road, so he created a new line of headsets and microphones for the ham radio industry. At one point, Joe Walsh, another ham enthusiast, told him he wanted to use one of his microphones onstage.

Mr. Heil protested that the microphones were not concert quality. Mr. Walsh disagreed. “I was at his house and went downstairs to his little studio and he proved it to me,” Mr. Heil told TapeOp. “So I had to start listening all over again.”
