DETROIT (April 10, 2023) – The Rocket Mortgage Classic today announced daily grounds tickets and passes to hospitality venues are now on sale at RocketMortgageClassic.com , where spectators can purchase packages to witness the fifth annual event being held at the Detroit Golf Club June 27-July 2.

The tournament also announced several notable early player commitments to this year’s field, including two-time major championship winner Collin Morikawa – who will make his Rocket Mortgage Classic debut – plus defending Rocket Mortgage Classic champion Tony Finau and five-time PGA TOUR winner Rickie Fowler.

“We’re excited to welcome Collin to the Rocket Mortgage Classic for the first time, welcome Tony back to defend his title and have Rickie join us again as he continues his terrific season. This is just the beginning of what we expect to be another strong field,” said Jason Langwell, Executive Director of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. “The excitement level is high as we get set to celebrate the fifth anniversary of this amazing event right here in the city of Detroit. We encourage fans to buy tickets early, as most reserved areas are likely to sell out.”

The initial player commitments for the Rocket Mortgage Classic are sure to provide Detroit fans with many highlights this summer:

· Collin Morikawa – The 2020 PGA Championship winner and 2021 Open Championship winner will make his Rocket Mortgage Classic debut in July. Currently 11th in the Official World Golf Ranking, the 26-year old Californian has won five times on the PGA TOUR and has four top-10 results in 10 events this season. Morikawa made the cut in his first 22 events on the PGA TOUR, second only to Tiger Woods’ record of 25 .

· Tony Finau – The defending champion of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Finau has won three times on the PGA TOUR since last July. His 26-under-par performance last summer at Detroit Golf Club allowed him to cruise to a five-stroke triumph, his second victory in as many weeks on TOUR. Finau is currently 14th in the Official World Golf Ranking, and the five-time PGA TOUR winner has three top-10 finishes this season, including a win at the Cadence Bank Houston Open. Finau will be making his third appearance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

· Rickie Fowler - A Rocket Mortgage ambassador and a five-time PGA TOUR winner, Fowler is 58th in the World Ranking and has registered four top-10 finishes in 12 tournaments this season. He has played on four Ryder Cup teams and appeared in three Presidents Cups – and represented the United States in the 2016 Olympic Games. Fowler has played in the Rocket Mortgage Classic each year it has been held, with his best finish a T12 in 2020.

All Rocket Mortgage Classic tickets are digital and day-specific, and fans are encouraged to buy tickets early for the best prices. Grounds tickets start at $65 per day, with LendingTree Lounge passes starting at $110 and Club Ace passes starting at $300.

While grounds tickets are a great option for fans looking to explore the entire course, guests seeking exciting hospitality options can consider the LendingTree Lounge and Club Ace. Both venues offer upgraded viewing experiences featuring tented and outdoor seating, upgraded food and beverage for purchase and private restrooms. The LendingTree Lounge overlooks the 16th green, with views of the 16th fairway, 17th tee and 13th green. About the Rocket Mortgage Classic

The Rocket Mortgage Classic made history in 2019 as the first PGA TOUR event ever held in the city of Detroit, and has continued to make a positive and lasting impact on the city and its residents through its multi-year Changing the Course campaign, established in 2020 to end the digital divide in Detroit and ensure digital accessibility for all city residents. The Rocket Mortgage Classic was the most awarded event during the 2018-19 PGA TOUR season, being recognized for “Best Special Event” (then known as the AREA 313 Celebrity Challenge) and “Best Tournament Sales” as well as being honored with the first “Fair Way Award” for its diversity and inclusion initiatives. 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic Full Field: Eight of World Top 30 Coming to Detroit

  • Author: John Schwarb

The heart of the summer is upon us when the PGA Tour comes to the midwest, and this week the Tour visits Michigan for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Coming on the heels of the U.S. Open and a designated event at the Travelers, and with a purse of $8.8 million, the event at the Detroit Golf Club doesn't have all the game's top names but it still has a respectable eight players from the world top 30 (seven from the SI World Golf Rankings top 30). Defending champion Tony Finau returns, along with Max Homa, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Sungjae Im, Tom Kim, Hideki Matsuyama and Keegan Bradley.

The event is in its fifth playing, and other returning champions include Cam Davis and Nate Lashley. Another past champion of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Bryson DeChambeau, now plays at LIV Golf.

Expect to see buckets of birdies at Detroit Golf Club: in three of four previous editions, the winning score was at least 23 under.

2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic set for June 26-July 2 as PGA Tour releases schedule

pga tour detroit 2023

The Rocket Mortgage Classic prided itself on its new schedule for 2022, moving the tournament at the Detroit Golf Club from around Fourth of July weekend to July 28-31, targeting better players in the window between the British Open and the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

However, the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic will run from June 26-July 2, according to the PGA Tour schedule for next season released Monday, placing it right back on the early July schedule. Action takes place two weeks after the U.S. Open and three weeks before the British Open.

THE GRAND PRIZE: How should Tony Finau spend $1.5 million Rocket Mortgage Classic prize? Golf fans have ideas

SCENES FROM WEEKEND: I went looking for LIV Golf fans at 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Here's what I found.

This year's Rocket Mortgage Classic featured a quality field, as world No. 13 Tony Finau set the tournament record (26-under 262) and won his second straight PGA Tour event . World No. 4 golfer Patrick Cantlay finished tied for second in his first trip to Detroit. World No. 17 golfer Cameron Young, a standout rookie and Open Championship runner up, finished tied for second with Cantlay.

“By all measures, the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic was a smashing success," said Jason Langwell, executive director of the tournament. "...To crown a champion such as Tony Finau on Sunday afternoon after watching his magnificent performance over the course of four days at Detroit Golf Club was truly special."

This year, players were lured by the late-season opportunity to gain leverage in the FedEx Cup Standings. Detroit held the next to last regular season event; the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, is this weekend, followed by the FedEx Cup Playoff in Memphis.

No. 14 Will Zalatoris and No. 20 Max Homa were notables in the postseason race who came to the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Former Masters winner Adam Scott and fan favorite Rickie Fowler also made appearances. But no one in the field matched the star power of past competitors Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau, now of LIV Golf.

Attracting another top star might be easier now that that the tournament is back to its early July date. World No. 7 Justin Thomas had spoken with Rocket officials about playing this year, but could be interested earlier in next season when not picking his spots ahead of the postseason.

“We are already looking forward to next year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic and are excited about our dates, which fall during the same week as our inaugural event in 2019 and last year’s tournament, both of which produced tremendous crowds," Langwell said.

Rickie Fowler, the 54-hole leader entering Sunday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, had been in contention enough lately that even casual golf fans knew the drill . The 34-year-old was trying to win his first PGA Tour event since the 2019 WM Phoenix Open, claim his sixth career tour title (and a $1.584 million first-place prize money payout) and put an exclamation point on a career turnaround that had seen him fall outside the top 150 in the World Ranking only to return to No. 35 entering this week at Detroit Golf Club.

The final hurdle for Fowler remained crossing the finish line on Sunday. The popular pro was leading entering the final round for the 11th time in his career but had gone on to win just twice in the previous 10 attempts, the most recent stumble occurring when he shot a closing five-over 75 at the U.S. Open two weeks ago , letting Wyndham Clark take the title as Fowler fell to T-5.

But Sunday was different, even when it didn’t look like it would be. After holding the lead much of the afternoon at Detroit Golf Club only to watch Adam Hadwin and Collin Morikawa surge past him late, a birdie on the 72nd hole gave Fowler a four-under 68 to tie him with Hadwin and Morikawa at 24 under. And then a birdie from 11 feet, 10 inches on the first extra hole, the same par-4 18th, gave Fowler that win he’d been so desperately looking for, four years, four months and 29 days since his last.

“It's hard to put it all into words,” said Fowler, holding his 1-year-old daughter, Maya, on the 18th green. “Obviously, a lot of good stuff this year … I knew it was just a matter of time with how I’ve been playing.”

The overall purse at Detroit Golf Club was $8.8 million. Here are the prize money payouts for each golfer who made the cut in Detroit.

2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic leaderboard, grades: Rickie Fowler earns long-awaited win No. 6 in playoff

Fowler bested collin morikawa and adam hadwin in a playoff for his first win since the 2019 phoenix open.

Rickie Fowler was back at some point earlier this season. Possibly after the Zozo Championship in October, where he finished T2. Maybe it was after the Phoenix Open in February, when he finished T10 following a mediocre final day. Or perhaps it was when he led the U.S. Open after 54 holes just two weeks ago at Los Angeles Country Club.

"Rickie's back" became official on Sunday, however, when he won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in a playoff over Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin with a birdie on the first hole of bonus play.

Getting there was a grind, both metaphorically through the last four years of not winning PGA Tour events, and literally; Fowler looked to be kicking away this tournament late in the day after he was the heavy favorite going into the final round.

Following a great start to his day, Fowler stalled over the last few hours of his round, making par on 10 straight holes going to the 72nd. On a day when Morikawa shot 64 and Hadwin had jumped past him, Fowler had to birdie the last hole just to get into the playoff. He got it with one of the more clutch shots you'll ever see a professional hit.

Then in the playoff, after a flared drive way out to the right, Fowler once again fired at the pin.

He left himself 12 feet for his first win since February 2019 when he took the Phoenix Open, and he made sure there wouldn't be a 74th hole of the day.

"It's hard to put it all into words," Fowler told CBS Sports' Amanda Renner. "Obviously, a lot of good stuff this year. I've been playing some really good golf. I knew it was just a matter of time with how I've been playing. I've had a couple of tough weekends where I've had a chance ... but at the end of the day getting to hang with Maya and my wife, winning is great but there's a lot more to life than that."

Fowler famously fell outside the top 170 in the world over the last few years and even seemed to flirt with the idea of playing in the LIV Golf league this time 14 months ago. Instead, he doubled down on his swing, returned to old coach, Butch Harmon, and put in the work he needed to become a top-30 golfer in the world once again.

"After a while, Rickie started coming out to Vegas to see me," Harmon told Golf Digest earlier this year , "and we could both see the path back -- even better than before. Golf is a cruel game, and sometimes those bad times, if you can get through them, really help you going forward."

No, the reward for Fowler at the summit of this mountain is not hundreds of millions of dollars, but it is the gratification that comes with once again excelling in your craft. The U.S. Ryder Cup team, which Fowler will almost certainly be a part of now, is not a bad parting gift, either.

What's not being discussed is how much is still at stake this season for the now six-time PGA Tour winner. The Open at Royal Liverpool in three weeks is where Fowler almost won in 2014 over Rory McIlroy, and the FedEx Cup Playoffs loom beyond that. Fowler could still accomplish plenty over the rest of 2023, but make no mistake about what the Rocket Mortgage Classic marked on this Sunday in Detroit. Rickie Fowler is now officially officially back and likely not going anywhere anytime soon. Grade: A+

Below are other grades following the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Challenge:

T2.   Collin Morikawa (-24):  I said on Saturday that I didn't really care what happened on Sunday, and that remained true even as Morikawa tried to fight his way to the top of the board. This was the type of week everyone has come to expect from Morikawa — amazing from tee to green, and if the putts fall, he's going to win the golf tournament (which he nearly did on Sunday). It's also a bit different than what's been going on with him recently. In three of his previous six starts coming into this week, he had lost strokes either off the tee or (gasp!) with his iron play. This week portends for what could be a strong closing kick to the summer for somebody who has not fallen off quite as much as everyone thinks.  Grade: A-

T40. Ludvig Aberg (-11):  My biggest takeaway from Aberg's nice week is what European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, who played with Aberg on Thursday and Friday, said about him before the third round.

"He [Donald] told me there have only been a few [players] that he's played with for the very first time that have the 'wow' factor," relayed Nick Dougherty of Golf Channel. "One of them is Rory. That was back in 2008 at the Dunhill Links.

"Now he says Ludvig Aberg is one of those guys as well," Dougherty continued. "He said his driver is a huge weapon, he makes the game look effortless. He added that as long as he continues to show form, he will definitely be considered for the [Ryder Cup] team. ... This guy is going to be a superstar."

Aberg is a total menace with driver in hand— he finished third in the field in strokes-gained off the tee — and is going to be a force. His double-bogey-bogey run late on Saturday took him completely out of the golf tournament, but it was the 65-67 start that has folks buying stock (a lot of it) in what seems like an extremely bright future.  Grade: A+

MC. Justin Thomas (+1):  It's been a no good, very strange year for the two-time major champion. After a few months of struggle, he seemed to turn the corner last week at the Travelers Championship when he got in the mix on the weekend. However, a 76 in Round 1 at Detroit Golf Club paved the way for his third missed cut in his last four PGA Tour starts.

Clearly, he's struggling. Whether that struggle is simply physical or mental (or both) remains to be seen. And though the near future — the Open Championship, FedEx Cup Playoffs and Ryder Cup — do not bring about optimism that J.T. can apply a quick fix to whatever besets him at the moment, he remains undeterred in his quest to once again become the best player int he world.

"Definitely saw a lot of great signs last week and played some really, really good golf those last three days," he said earlier in the week. "I'm just a couple events away from being right there. And a lot of things can happen. The unknown is the fun and bad part about this game, so we'll see where it takes us."

What is true, however, is the old adage that nearly every player who has played at the level J.T. has played at has uttered at some point in their careers: Nothing is ever as good or as bad as it seems.  Grade: F

MC. Tony Finau (-1):  The potential U.S. Ryder Cup team did not have the greatest week in Detroit. Since winning Mexico earlier in the year, Finau has more missed cuts (2) than top 25s (1). This is a curiosity that can probably be attributed to the ebbs and flows of professional golf. Unlike J.T., Finau has not dropped off the planet from a statistical standpoint. In fact, he's having one of the best seasons of his career from a strokes-gained perspective.

It was a fun return for the 2022 champion to Detroit — replete with a bobblehead, menu item and meeting with Chris Webber — but unfortunately it ended much (much) earlier this time around for Finau than it did when he touched off back-to-back wins a little under a year ago at this tournament.  Grade: F

This rookie is our long-shot pick in Detroit: 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds

Austin Eckroat's strong recent run has us predicting big things for him this week.

M. Anthony Nesmith/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The PGA Tour heads to Detroit, Mich., this week for the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, and we’re picking a Tour rookie as our long-shot to win. Here’s our pick, the Rocket Mortgage Classic odds and betting favorites and everything else you need to know for the week.

Rocket Mortgage Classic odds: Long-shot bet

For this week’s event in Detroit, we’re picking Austin Eckroat to have a week to remember and capture his maiden victory. Eckroat comes into the week with +6600 odds-to-win.

The 24-year-old rookie, who has three top-10s finishes on the season so far, has been on a hot streak of late. He hasn’t missed a cut since April, and his last five results look like this: T2, T16, T30, T10 and T24.

ruoning yin, tiger woods and keegan bradley

Tour Confidential: A new major winner, surging Keegan and Tiger Woods’ silence

That T10 came at the U.S. Open at LACC, marking an impressive finish in only his second-career major start. His runner-up came at the AT&T Byron Nelson, which was a low-scoring affair with the winning number coming in at 23 under. That’s important because pros always go super low at Detroit Golf Club during the Rocket Mortgage Classic, with Tony Finau winning last year’s event with a total score of 26 under.

Should he pull off his first Tour win this week, you could take home $660 with a modest $10 bet. Also consider placing small bets on him to finish top-10 and top-20 as insurance.

Looking for more long-shots to bet on? This week’s long-shot honorable mentions are Aaron Rai (+6600) and Doug Ghim (+6600).

Rocket Mortgage Classic odds: The favorites

Despite coming on the heels of two Designated Events, the Rocket Mortgage Classic field is packing plenty of star power. At the top of the odds-to-win list are Rickie Fowler and defending champion Tony Finau at +1200. Major winners Collin Morikawa (+1400), Justin Thomas (+1600) and Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) follow suit.

Max Homa is knotted with Matsuyama with +1800 odds-to-win, and last week’s winner Keegan Bradley opens the week with odds of +2800.

You can see the top 15 and ties in Rocket Mortgage Classic betting odds as of Monday afternoon below, or head over to BetMGM to see the full list of odds and bets for this week.

2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic betting odds (Top 15 and ties)

Rickie Fowler (+1200) Tony Finau (+1200) Collin Morikawa (+1400) Justin Thomas (+1600) Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) Max Homa (+1800) Sungjae Im (+1800) Tom Kim (+2000) Keegan Bradley (+2800) Cam Davis (+3300) Brian Harman (+4000) Harris English (+4000) Alex Smalley (+5000) Ludvig Aberg (+5000) Stephan Jaeger (+5000)

How last week’s long-shot fared

For last week’s Travelers Championship, we chose veteran Adam Scott as our long-shot pick to win , and he didn’t disappoint. Scott opened with a strong eight-under 62 to get into contention, and remained near the top of the leaderboard until he was undone but a final-round 71 to drop to T19.

While it wasn’t a win, it still means we hit our top-20 insurance bet, which is our eighth top-20 hit of the year. Interestingly, our pick to win the U.S. Open two weeks ago, Keegan Bradley, went on to dominate the Travelers and capture his sixth PGA Tour victory.

PAST RESULTS

Kansas city royals at detroit tigers odds, picks and predictions, share this article.

pga tour detroit 2023

The Kansas City Royals (16-10) and Detroit Tigers (14-11) open a 3-game series Friday at Comerica Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Royals vs. Tigers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Tigers won 10-3 in 2023, including 5-1 at home vs. Royals

The surprising Royals took 3 of 4 games from the Toronto Blue Jays, cashing each of the past 3 outings as a mild underdog as the Under cashed. The total has gone low in 5 in a row for Kansas City, while cashing the Under at a 9-2 pace in the past 11 games dating back to April 14.

The Tigers were tripped up 7-5 against the Tampa Bay Rays in the 3-game series final Thursday, as Tampa salvaged a game after Detroit won the first 2 games by a combined 11-3 score, both as an underdog. The Over-Under has split in the past 4 games for the Tigers.

Royals at Tigers projected starters

RHP Seth Lugo vs. RHP Reese Olson

Lugo (3-1, 2.03 ERA) makes his 6th start of the season. He has a 1.19 WHIP, 2.0 BB/9 and 4.1 K/9 in 31 IP.

  • Last start: Loss, 5 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 9 H (2 HR), 1 BB, 1 K in 5-0 home loss vs. Kansas City Royals on Sunday
  • 2024 road splits: Win, 7 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 4 K in 2-0 win vs. Chicago White Sox on April 15 in his only road appearance to date

Olson (0-3, 3.80 ERA) makes his 5th start. He has a 1.45 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9 and 7.6 K/9 in 21 1/3 IP.

  • Last start: Loss, 5 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 5 H, 2 BB, 4 K in 4-3 road loss vs. Minnesota Twins last Saturday
  • 2024 home splits: Loss, 6 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 8 K in 1-0 loss vs. Texas Rangers on April 15 in his only home start to date

Royals at Tigers odds

  • Moneyline (ML) : Royals -105 (bet $105 to win $100) | Tigers -115 (bet $115 to win $100)
  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Royals -1.5 (+155) | Tigers +1.5 (-190)
  • Over/Under (O/U) : 8 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Royals at Tigers picks and predictions

Royals 4, Tigers 3

The ROYALS (-105) are a solid play as slight underdogs in this matinee series opener against the division rival Tigers (-115).

While Detroit dominated the series in 2023, this is a new season. Kansas City has fired out of the chute and played good baseball to date, and it is a solid play behind Lugo, who has allowed very little so far this season.

Run line/Against the spread

The Tigers +1.5 (-190) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return if you need a little bit of insurance, and you just cannot fathom the idea of taking the Tigers straight up.

If you like the Royals -1.5 (+155), they’re quite a tempting play. However, while they won the final 3 games of the series against the Blue Jays, each of the victories were by a single run.

UNDER 8 ( -110 ) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at most.

The total has gone low in 5 straight games for the Royals, while going 9-2 in the past 11 outings since April 14. The Under is 6-1-1 in the past 8 road games for Kansas City, too.

For the Tigers, the Over-Under has split in the past 4 games. However, at home, the Under is 4-2 in the past 6 games. The total has gone low at a 3-1-1 clip in the past 5 games inside the division, too.

Sunday's golf: Nelly Korda ties LPGA Tour record with 5th straight victory

The Woodlands, Texas — Nelly Korda etched her name in the LPGA Tour record books Sunday, winning her record-tying fifth straight tournament with a two-stroke victory in the Chevron Championship for her second major title.

Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events. Her previous major victory was in 2021 at the Women's PGA Championship.

The top-ranked Korda shot a 3-under 69 in the final to outlast Maja Stark of Sweden, who birdied her final two holes to shoot 69 and pull within one. Korda stayed aggressive on the par-5 18th, easily clearing the lake in front of the green and setting up an easy up-and-down birdie for a two-shot victory.

Korda had a four-day total of 13-under 275 at Carlton Woods.

Korda entered the last round one shot off the lead after completing the last seven holes of the weather-delayed third round early Sunday morning on a windy and unseasonably cool day.

She birdied two of her first four holes to take the lead. Lauren Coughlin birdied Nos. 13 and 14 to get within two strokes, but bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes put her four behind. She shot a final-round 68 finish tied for third with Canadian Brooke Henderson.

Korda nearly aced the par-3 17th, with her tee shot hitting the hole and hopping in the air before settling within 10 feet. She settled for par to maintain her two-shot lead.

Korda wowed the large crowd, which followed her throughout the day, by chipping into the wind for birdie on the par-4 10th hole to take a four-stroke lead. The 25-year-old raised her club above her head with one hand and pumped her fist after the ball rolled into the hole.

Haeran Ryu of South Korea shot a bogey-free 67 to enter the final round leading Korda by one. But the 2023 Rookie of the Year bogeyed the first two holes in the fourth round to fall out of the lead. She closed with a 74 and finished fifth.

Henderson was tied with Korda for second to start the last round after she shot a 64 in the third round to set a scoring record for the tournament since its move from Mission Hills, California, to Texas last year. But the Canadian, who has 13 LPGA wins with two majors, also faltered early in the final round, with a bogey and a double bogey in the first four holes.

Korda took home $1.2 million from a purse of $7.9 million, a significant increase from last year’s purse of $5.2 million. That brings her season earnings to $2,424,216 and her career earnings to $11,361,489.

Winners had been jumping into Poppie’s Pond off the 18th green at Mission Hills since 1988, and Korda became the second to do it in Texas by leaping off a small dock into brown-tinged water. World No. 2 Lilia Vu was first to jump into the pond here after her win last season. She withdrew from this year’s tournament before the first round after experiencing “severe discomfort” in her back during warmups.

Eighteen-year-old amateur Jasmine Koo provided an unlikely highlight on the 18th hole. Her second shot bounced off the advertising board in the water and back into play. She ended up with a birdie to shoot 71.

Hilton Head Island, S.C. — Masters champion Scottie Scheffler holed a difficult pitch for eagle on his second hole Sunday and turned the RBC Heritage into another rout. A storm system with heavy rain stopped play for 2 1/2 hours, forcing a Monday finish.

Scheffler was 20 under and has a five-shot lead with three holes remaining when the final round resumes at 8 a.m. Monday. He was on the verge of winning for the fourth time in five tournaments, the exception a runner-up finish in the Houston Open.

He was trying to become the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the week after slipping on the Masters green jacket.

U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark made a furious charge early in the round at 8 under through 11 holes, only to lose ground with a double bogey in the trees. He posted a 6-under 65 and finished at 15-under 269.

Patrick Cantlay was tied for second at 15 under when he hit his approach to the collar of the 18th green. He chose to mark his ball and return Monday to finish. J.T. Poston also was on the 18th hole and among the group at 15 under.

None had a chance of catching Scheffler unless the world’s No. 1 golfer made a series of blunders in the morning, and that looked improbable.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic — Billy Horschel went to the Dominican Republic for the first time in search of momentum and came away with a PGA Tour victory he sorely needed Sunday in the Corales Puntacana Championship.

Horschel ran off four straight birdies on the front nine to get in the mix, began to pull away with an eagle on the par-5 12th hole and closed with a 9-under 63 for a two-shot victory over Wesley Bryan.

Horschel, who started the final round three shots behind, all but sealed it with an 18-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

Bryan, trying to go wire-to-wire, was only one shot behind late in the round. But right after Horschel made his final birdie, Bryan missed a par par putt from just outside 2 feet and fell three behind. He birdied the 18th for a 68 and was runner-up.

Horschel finished at 23-under 265 and earned $720,000 for his eighth PGA Tour victory, and his first in nearly two years.

PGA Tour Champions

Irving, Texas — Paul Broadhurst closed with a 5-under 66, playing bogey-free over the final nine holes to hang on for a one-shot victory over David Toms in the Invited Celebrity Classic for his sixth PGA Tour Champions title.

The tournament was reduced to 36 holes because of heavy rain that washed out Saturday.

Toms shot a 65.

Broadhurst, who finished at 11-under 131, had not won on the PGA Tour Champions since 2018, the year he won three times and his second senior major. The victory moves the Englishman to No. 2 in the Charles Schwab Cup behind Steven Alker, who did not play.

Y.E. Yang (69) and Thomas Bjorn (70) tied for third, three shots behind. Bjorn was playing on a sponsor exemption.

Korn Ferry Tour

Lakewood, Fla. — Tim Widing of Sweden won his first Korn Ferry Tour event when he closed with a 5-under 66 and won a three-man playoff with a par on the second extra hole in the Lecom Suncoast Classic.

Widing birdied the par-3 17th and finished with a par to get into a playoff with Patrick Cover (69) and Steven Fisk, who lost the lead with two bogeys only to birdie the 18th for a 68.

Cover was eliminated with bogey on the first extra hole at No. 18. Fisk made bogey the second time around.

Miles Russell, the 15-year-old from Florida who became the youngest player in Korn Ferry Tour history to make the cut, shot a 66 to tie for 20th. The top 25 get into the next tournament.

Other tours

John Catlin won for the second straight time on the Asian Tour. He closed with a 5-under 66 on Saturday for a wire-to-wire victory by seven shots over Wade Ormsby in the Saudi Open. Abortion rule, missing organs, NFL Draft notes: Down in Alabama

Happy Friday. We have some state politics, but much more could be coming next week as the Legislative session begins to wind down. On the podcast today we welcome statewide high school sports editor Ben Thomas, who spoke with us about that Rush Propst non-firing in Pell City.

Below is a podcast player, and the newsletter follows.

Another front on abortion

Last week, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission expanded its definition of “pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions” to include abortions in the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. The change, which the EEOC said is consistent with Title VII and court decisions, means that most employers of 15 or more people are required to provide “reasonable accommodation” for workers seeking an abortion.

The EEOC said it does not require employers or company health plans to cover costs. It also said while leave must be offered, it doesn’t have to be paid leave. The new rule is expected to go into effect on June 18.

AL.com’s Howard Koplowitz reports that Alabama and 16 other states have filed a lawsuit over the new rules. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall and others argue that the EEOC can’t change the law that was passed by Congress, that providing accommodations for the health of pregnant women and babies was a bipartisan effort but facilitating abortions isn’t.

Alabama border states Tennessee, Florida and Georgia are also among the 17 states involved in the legal action.

Case of the missing heart

Brandon Clay Dotson’s heart was never found.

The 43-year-old man died at Ventress Correctional Facility in November, and an autopsy was performed on his body. The body was returned. Dotson’s family, aware of some of the horror stories that have been reported about Alabama’s prisons, hired a private pathologist to do a second autopsy, and that pathologist discovered his heart was missing.

So the family filed a lawsuit against Alabama’s prison system, the Department of Forensic Sciences and UAB Medical Center.

Without details, however, a U.S. District Judge has dismissed the case after the family and state “filed a joint stipulation of dismissal,” reports AL.com’s Ivana Hrynkiw .

Dotson’s isn’t the only body of an inmate that has reportedly turned up surprisingly with organs missing. So, on Thursday, the Alabama House of Representatives passed a bill that would make it a felony for a medical examiner to take organs without consent of next of kin, reports AL.com’s Mike Cason .

That’s already against the law. But the bill that passed the House adds a Class C felony penalty. That would make the crime punishable by one to 10 years in prison.

The bill, by Chris England, a Tuscaloosa Democrat, passed 89-1 and moves to the Senate.

Feeling the Draft

Four players who had starred inside the state of Alabama were drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night, reports AL.com’s Mark Inabinett .

Quarterback Bo Nix played high school ball at Pinson Valley and played his first three college seasons at Auburn. He was taken at No. 12 by the Denver Broncos.

Before that, the Los Angeles Chargers picked Alabama offensive tackle J.C. Lathan with the seventh pick.

Two other Alabama players went in the first round: linebacker Dallas Turner to the Minnesota Vikings at No. 17 and cornerback Terrion Arnold to the Detroit Lions at No. 24.

The Lions are into Crimson Tide players , by the way. This is the third year is a row Detroit has traded up in the Draft and ended up using the pick to select an Alabama player. The Lions drafted wide receiver Jameson Williams in 2022 and running back Jahmyr Gibbs in 2023.

“Jeff Sessions is the attorney general, and Donald Trump has him in his pocket.”

Former Donald Trump lawyer Michael Cohen , according to former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, who was testifying in Trump’s hush-money trial this week. Pecker said it was Cohen’s response to Pecker’s concern over a letter he received from the Federal Election Commission.

By the Numbers

That’s the 18-hole golf score carded by former Alabama golfer Frankie Capan III during the first round of the Veritex Bank Championship. The score is a record low for the developmental Korn Ferry Tour. Capan is ranked 30th in points this season; the top 30 golfers will earn a PGA Tour card for next season.

International certification achieved for the first time in tournament history

ATLANTA – The 2023 edition of the TOUR Championship has become a GEO Certified® tournament for the first time in the event’s history, recognizing its sustainability commitments, actions and progress.

The PGA TOUR’s season finale received the international award for sustainability in golf, overseen by Scotland-based GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation, reflecting measures across the staging, communications, and legacies of the event.

The 2023 event met specific criteria outlined in the voluntary standard for Sustainable Golf tournaments, which embodies requirements for planning, delivery and continual improvement across a comprehensive suite of key sustainability themes and action areas including energy, waste and resource management, site protection and procurement, as well as social impacts and legacies. The independent third-party verification was carried out by the Council for Responsible Sport with a thorough review by GEO Certification Ltd., and agreement to various "Continual Improvement Points" for future editions of the event.

“Congratulations to the TOUR Championship on achieving this distinction for the first time,” said Jonathan Smith, executive director of the GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation. “It is wonderful to see the event step forward as another pioneer in the wider PGA TOUR initiative and to use the standard and certification process as a framework for action, target setting and measurement of progress for the years ahead. Congratulations to the tournament team, all supporting partners and contributors. We look forward to seeing continued progress through the years ahead.”

The 2023 TOUR Championship marked the official launch of the PGA TOUR’s sustainability program with a vision to lead, partner and inspire to take climate action and promote nature. The PGA TOUR Partner Connect Sustainability Summit brought together key leaders from corporations connected to the TOUR, including the event’s Proud Partners, to discuss how the environmental impact of events can be minimized while positive multipliers and legacies for nature and communities can be increased.

“This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration from the Atlanta community and especially our Proud Partners – Accenture, The Coca-Cola Company and Southern Company,” said Alex Urban, executive director of the TOUR Championship. “We look forward to continuing our commitment to build a more sustainable tournament as we work to improve and innovate for the 2024 event, and exhibit a more eco-friendly experience for our players, partners and fans.”

The recognition is a significant step on the tournament’s sustainability journey. As part of the certification process, the TOUR Championship achieved high marks across the priority areas of event planning, staging operations, communications and legacies.

Highlights from the initiatives observed during the event and through submitted evidence included:

  • Climate action: 100% renewable energy provided through Southern Company via battery-powered and renewable diesel generators onsite, renewable energy certificates and renewable natural gas delivered to East Lake’s clubhouse throughout the week.
  • Recycling: Scrim and plastic merchandise wrapping collected and repurposed post-event.
  • Waste reduction: From material guidelines, including alternative options and emphasizing minimization, provided to all vendors through the Procurement Plan, through to composting in all back-of-house kitchens and hospitality suites.
  • Supporting local: Prioritizing local and seasonal products by catering provider, Proof of Pudding. Little Greens, an Atlanta-based vegetarian food outlet featured for first time. Excess food was donated to the local community.
  • Community impact: The work of the East Lake Foundation is a key part of the TOUR Championship with featured events including school trips, supporting Executive Women’s event and "Tee up ATL." The First Tee Game Changer Pavilion drew 3,250 visitors throughout the week.
  • Communications and awareness: Sustainability focused engagement through the operations team with the East Lake Foundation and other beneficiaries, partners, and vendors. Other activations included Southern Company’s Good Energy Pavilion and Coca-Cola Waste Challenge.

“At Southern Company, we are immensely proud that the TOUR Championship has been recognized as a GEO Certified® Tournament,” said Southern Company Chairman, President and CEO Chris Womack. “Delivering 100% renewable energy for the TOUR Championship and driving sustainability on course links up with our company goal off the course – achieving net zero emissions across our electric and gas businesses by 2050.”

The TOUR Championship will make a return to Labor Day weekend in 2024, with tournament dates set for Aug. 28-Sept. 1, as the PGA TOUR’s top 30 players compete in the FedExCup Playoffs finale for their chance to win the FedExCup and the season title.
