pictured rocks cruise boat

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. This helps support what we do and in no way costs you a thing.

I know, I am still talking about Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, LOL – I can’t help it! There is SOOOO much to see and do there! Right now we are going to talk about Cruises to Take at Pictured Rocks – it is just about the perfect time of year to try them.

Should you take a cruise to see Pictured Rocks?

The best way to see the beautiful multi-colored cliffs of Pictured Rock National Lakeshore is from the water. What better way to admire the incredible scenery than by taking a guided boat cruise on Lake Superior? Guided cruises are the perfect way to see Pictured Rocks for families, couples as well as solo travelers.

cruises to take at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Take a break from hiking and outdoor sports and relax on a cruise taking you around the lake. Don’t forget to pack your camera for the once-in-a-lifetime shots of waterfalls, beaches, and cliffs. Did you know that some cruises offer glass-bottom boat tours at Pictured Rocks or even shipwreck tours?

Pictured Rocks Cruises is the only tour company licensed to offer guided boat cruises of the Pictured Rocks sandstone cliffs. You can choose from three different tour types. The Classic Cruise takes 2,5 hours and costs $38 per person. This cruise is available from mid-May to mid-October. It takes you 32 miles along the coastline of Lake Superior to see beaches, caves , and cliffs. This cruise has existed for over 70 years.

Pictured Rocks cruises facts and information

If you can’t get enough of Pictured Rocks’ beautiful waterfalls why not go for the Spray Falls Cruise ? This option takes only 2 hours and 15 minutes since it is operated with a high-speed catamaran. You’ll get to see all the attractions from the Classic Cruise plus Spray Falls. This waterfall is a unique landmark and only accessible from the water so make sure to add it to your itinerary. The Spray Falls Cruise is slightly more expensive at $45 per person. You can also opt to take this tour as a sunset cruise.

Finally, there is the Sunset Cruise which takes you along the same route as the Classic Cruise but later on in the day. That way you get to admire Pictured Rocks in the beautiful evening light with an incredible sunset to finish off the day. The price of this cruise is also $38. This cruise option is only available during a very specific time of the year, usually in late May and July. Check the Pictured Rock Cruises website for updates and availability.

Cruises usually run multiple times per day, more during the peak season (late June to the beginning of September). There are still cruises available in May and September until mid-October but at reduced capacity. Booking in advance is highly recommended as tickets tend to sell out during popular times.

Where do Pictured Rocks boat tours go?

Pictured Rocks cruises take you along the coast of Lake Superior. You’ll pass Grand Island and the East Channel Lighthouse which gives you a fantastic view of the island from the water. Definitely plan a day trip here after your cruise.

Then the boat takes a route close to the shore of Lake Superior passing by famous places like Miners Castle, Painted Coves, Lovers’ Leap, Rainbow cave, Indian Head, Grand Portal, Battleship Rocks, Flower Vase, Indian Drum, Chapel Cove, and Chapel Rock. If you choose to take the Spray Falls tour this will be your last stop on the cruise before you return to Munising. Many of these attractions are best viewed from the water so definitely choose to take a boat cruise on your trip to Pictured Rocks.

What can you see on a boat tour?

The highlights of any Pictured Rocks boat tour are of course the beautiful multi-colored sandstone cliffs on the shore of Lake Superior. You’ll get to see many of the unique rock formations that make this area so famous. Of course, you’ll also be able to enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Lake Superior and its beautiful surrounding landscape. You might even be lucky enough to spot one of the many shipwrecks that lie submerged in the lake if you choose to take one of the shipwreck tours at Pictured Rocks.

Keep an eye out for native animals on your cruise like the bald eagle, hawks, or even black bears.

Taking a glass-bottom shipwreck boat tour at Pictured Rocks

There are more than 30 shipwrecks in the Pictured Rocks area, only half of which have been discovered. A great way to learn more about the mysteries hidden under the surface of Lake Superior close to Pictured Rocks is by taking one of the famous glass-bottom shipwreck boat tours.

Tickets cost $35 per person to go on a 2-hour cruise. If you take this boat tour you’ll get to see two different shipwrecks through the glass bottom as well as other landmarks around Pictured Rocks including caves, cliffs, and a historic lighthouse. This tour will give you a unique perspective on the underwater world at Lake Superior which you won’t have with any other cruise. Tours run every day from June 15th to September 30th. Find out more information here.

Private boat cruises at Pictured Rocks

If you’re visiting Pictured Rocks as part of a larger group or are looking for a more exclusive experience why not consider hiring a private boat to take you around Lake Superior. Prices start at $350 for a half-day cruise for six people. These boat tours are highly customizable and you’ll get to decide your own itinerary and pace. Tours can depart anywhere from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and can even include a BBQ on the beach if requested. Find out more information here.

Great tour! Boat Captain was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Gorgeous views and great photo opportunities. While on the tour we discovered beaches that we went to the next day. Bring a blanket though. We did an afternoon tour in August and it was chilly!

While the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is DEFINITEY worthy of visiting, the cruise we took today with this firm was just plain awful. Our first warning sign was that we noticed that none of the people from the preceding trip were smiling when they got off the boat. That should have tipped us off. This is definitely NOT a trip for little kids - or even teenagers unless they are geology or nature geeks. The main issue was that the captain and crew lost control of the trip from the very start. The captain made one announcement about how people should not stand to take photos, because that blocked the view of other passengers. He said that if you wanted to stand, to go outside on the stern of the boat. The reason is that people on the other side of the boat would have their view blocked by those standing at the windows or in the aisle. Within just a few minutes of departure, people disobeyed this rule, and the captain did nothing about it. We had our view blocked much of the way out because of people violating this rule. Also, it was very hot today - the hottest day of this summer. One of the crewmen sat in the main window at the front of the boat, blocking about 1/2 of the ventilation from that window for about 1/2 of the trip. I'm sure he was cooler than the rest of us. The captain asked that little children not be allowed to run around the aisles - a rule which of course both they and their parents ignored. I can't tell you how glad we were to exit this cruise. One of our big concerns was that if there was an emergency, the captain had not established himself as an authority - so that people would not obey him in case there really was a problem. 1) Do not take small children - or even teenagers on this cruise. They'll hate it. 2) Sit on the right side of the boat. The trip out is vastly different than the return trip, despite what the captain promised. You'll be disappointed. 3) If it's a hot day, bring an umbrella for the excessive wait in the line to board the ship.

We took the Spray Falls cruise at 10 a.m. The cruise was wonderful, the scenery was gorgeous and fascinating, and the captain's narration was entertaining and informative. However, we weren't allowed to stand up even for a second to snap a photo while the boat was moving, and we only stopped twice to allow passengers to take photos. Since most people - including us! - are going to want to take photos on a tour of Pictured Rocks, this was a significant drawback. (The photos that we did manage to take while seated were all partially blocked by the railings and heads of other passengers.) What's truly ironic is that the advertising blurb for this particular cruise literally says, "You won't get wet, but you will get great photos!" Um, no - you absolutely will not. Hopefully, the owners of this cruise line will either revise this misleading advertising, or consider incorporating more photo op stops into future tours. Another annoying detail is the crewman who planted himself with his arms crossed in the seat facing the passengers so he could police the people that dared to stand up for a second to sneak a quick photo. His presence definitely put a damper on what was otherwise a very enjoyable trip.

Pictured Rocks Cruises was a great excursion during our visit to the U.P. The staff was friendly and the boat was clean. The top two decks were pretty packed by the time we made it to the boat, so we sat on the lower deck. Great views and ample seating. We loved our tour and the Captain's commentary. The rocks themselves were gorgeous and a must see! I would certainly take the tour again. My one recommendation is to get there at LEAST thirty minutes before your departure time, as the parking lot was packed solid. If a single car hadn't left we would have been parking way down the street, walking to the dock and would have missed our boat. However we got there about 7 minutes prior to departure, so that's on us. There is also a gift shop with a lot of nice things. Some was typical touristy stuff, but a lot was really nice quality and gift worthy. We definitely recommend Pictured Rocks Cruises.

Well the national park website stated military discount however when arrived to buy our tickets we were told there was not one. You better line up 45 to 60 mins before cause if you want a good seat for photos. It's only 2hrs and we did the Spray Falls tour. It was nice that the boat does a u-turn so if sit on right or left side you'll get good photos if sitting at railing or top of the boat. Bring a small lunch or snack or $1s to buy drinks aboard. Captain was nice and knew his stuff and grew up in the town.

I completely, wholeheartedly advise anyone and everyone to take this Cruise. It was magnificent to see the pictured rocks from the water. Only a handful of people and myself were on the top deck because it was 50° out and quite cold. But I was prepared so I stuck it out the whole 2 hour trip. Isaac who was the captain and the tour guide, was awesome. He had the silliest dad jokes, and I half expected to see a man in his 40s or 50s when I came down the stairs because of those jokes, and he was a young buck in his twenties, who gave a great and entertaining, as well as very informative, guided tour of the pictured rocks. Their souvenir shop has decently priced gifts for all ages and all shapes and sizes.

You should really add a requirements that parties together should sit in the same row especially allowing families with small children to sit together. These older women apparently didn't care. Be prepared to get there early if you have a larger party and want to sit together.

Wonderful views ...it's a fun experience while in the area. Also recommend trying the fish sausage from captain Ron's or ricks ... can't remember but it was good.

Highly recommend the Sunset Cruise! It's such a beautiful experience and even more breath taking when the sun is setting. We arrived ~45 minutes before and there was QUITE the line, so if you're set on a certain seat, you best arrive a hr+ early! You line up in the back of building near the dock - no need to go inside like I tried to at first. We didn't have trouble at all though getting a good view though. We sat at the lower deck & moved to the open back area once we were given OK to "move about the cabin". Also, since the boat travels to & fro the same way, you'll get a great view no matter which side you choose! It was particularly gorgeous on the way back as it was peak sunset -- so if I were to do it again, I'd just start sitting on the right side (the views are OK going there but BREATHTAKING heading back). FYI - There are bathrooms on board! If you use the Mackinac Ferry tix as a guideline, the Pictured Rocks Cruises are a STEAL and a great value.

Spectacular trip! But here's what you need to know before you go.... The tickets info says boarding is 15 mins before trip and that people line up starting an hour before the trip. We got there about an hour before our trip and there were about 40 people in line already. We still got good seats, but if you really want top level seats, you better get there early. I would choose the top level, right side as close to the front as possible for best viewing. (They do spin the boat so both sides get to see attractions) Don't be fooled by calm waters in Munising Bay, once you get past the protective island, Lake Superior can get pretty rough and choppy. If fact, we received an email the night before warning us of a possibility of rough waters and were given the opportunity to reschedule or cancel if we wanted. (Glad we didn't, because the winds died down before our ship took off). The wind did pick up as the sun went down however and it did get a little funky... and a big wave actually splashed the people on the right side of the boat all the way up on the third deck! If you want to take pictures, you are going to want to be as far up front and to the outside as possible. Otherwise you will have a lot of arms holding phones in your frames! It is really hard to stand to take a picture because of the rocking of the boat. Dress warm... even on a nice day! You can always take a jacket off, but it is a 2 hour trip, and it is much cooler out on the lake. There were a number of tough guys in tee shirts on my trip that were freezing by the time we docked. The name of the trip,we took was called the Sunset Spray Falls Cruse. This is a great trip and I highly recommend seeing this national park from the lake and it's really cool to watch the sunset from the lake. Just amazing what nature can do or has done over thousands of years. Well worth the $48.

You Don’t Want to Miss a Pictured Rocks Boat Tour

by Kris | Jul 16, 2021 | Attractions , Upper Peninsula | 3 comments

Natural stone archway called Lovers Leap in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore viewed from a Pictured Rocks tour boat out on the water

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore stretches for fifteen miles along the Upper Peninsula’s Lake Superior shoreline. With naturally colorful cliffs that tower as high as 200 feet above the water , it’s a spectacular sight that’s a must-visit on any trip to the UP. While there are some scenic drive and hiking trails running through the park, the best way to really appreciate the cliffs is from a Pictured Rocks tour boat. A National Parks concessionaire called Pictured Rocks Cruises operates numerous sailings 7 days a week from mid-May to mid-October, and I absolutely loved our tour.

Why take a Pictured Rocks boat tour?

Very little of the National Lakeshore is accessible by car so most visitors prefer to spend their visit on a Pictured Rocks tour boat. Viewing the colorful cliffs from out on the water gives you a much better view than you would have from the land anyway. On a Pictured Rocks tour, the captain will also provide information as you go along so you can learn about the various rock formations and changes that have happened over the years as arches and parts of the cliffs have collapsed due to continuing erosion in the area.

Colorful cliffs towering above the turquoise waters of Lake Superior in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

What’s a Pictured Rocks boat tour like?

Pictured Rocks boat tours depart from mid-May to mid-October from docks in Munising . You can choose between the slower-paced Classic Cruise and the Spray Falls Cruise that travels a little faster to take you further down the lakeshore to Spray Falls, one of the park’s waterfalls that drops straight into the lake. Purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended, especially on weekends and holidays in the summer.

Note: Plan to arrive at the docks almost an hour early to line up for boarding if you want to get one of the seats along the side of the boat (which you do). We got in line 45 minutes before departure and got perfect seats along the edge of the top deck, but people who arrived just a few minutes after us had to settle for lower decks or seats in the middle.

The boarding process was easy, but a little chaotic. A staff member began making her way through the queue to scan tickets approximately 25 minutes before departure, which helped speed things up when we were allowed on board. You enter on the bottom of three decks, and everyone made a beeline for the uncovered top deck to secure a side sea t – the equivalent of a window seat. Note that there were accommodations made for a woman walking with a cane, and she and her group were allowed to board first so they could make it into the lower deck cabin without fighting the masses.

Cliffside with pile of rubble at the base in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Passengers were drawn to the seats on the right side – aka starboard or the passenger side of a car – but we ended up on the left side because the seats on the right were already full. Either side is perfectly fine though because the boat heads east along the shore and then turns around to repeat the same trip back . The passengers on the right got the better views for the first half, but we had the prime viewing on the way back, which worked out well for our particular cruise because the lighting was better then. I paid close attention to the captain’s narration on the way out because I wasn’t expecting him to redo it as we headed back, but that turned out to be unnecessary because he repeated almost all the information.

Your Pictured Rocks boat tour begins with a quick trip through the harbor out toward the national lakeshore. There isn’t a ton to see for the first few minutes, and the boat traveled at a pretty decent clip here. Because we were on the outside deck, it got pretty windy and I was a little chilly. I was glad I had heeded the operators’ advice and brought a sweatshirt even though temps were in the upper 70s that day. The rest of the tour was at a much slower pace and I was quite comfy without the hoodie.

Colorful mineral deposits on a cliff in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore with a visitor in a yellow kayak in the foreground

Eventually, you’ll arrive at the first of the towering cliffs. Being up on the boat, it’s hard to get a good perspective on the size of them. Luckily, on the day we visited, there were groups of kayakers near several of the scenic areas, and their presence helped to give the cliffs a sense of scale. The Pictured Rocks get their name from the visible striping in the rock layers and mineral deposits left on the surface from spring water that leaks out forming colorful streaks.

Tall rock formation known as Miners Castle with turrets towering above the turquoise waters of Lake Superior in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

One of the first landmarks you’ll encounter is the rock formation known as Miners Castle . It’s one of the few spots in the park you can drive to, but views from the water are still the best. It’s named due to the rock “turrets” that make it look castle-like, and even though one of them collapsed in 2006, you can still see where it gets its name from.

Just past Miners Castle, you’ll see Bridalveil Falls . This thin cascade runs down the sloping edge of the cliff into the lake. It’s most active during the spring, and by the time we visited in mid-July, it was completely dry.

Lone pine tree atop Chapel Rock with its roots leading back to the cliff in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

My fiance has a great love for trees that are surviving in completely unreasonable conditions, so his favorite rock formation was an easy call. Chapel Rock was once connected to the cliff by a natural stone archway, and the roots from the tree pictured here grew on top of it. When the arch collapsed leaving Chapel Rock freestanding, the roots remained and the tree has continued to survive with its lifeline to the mainland.

Lovers Leap archway arcing over the Lake Superior shoreline in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Along the way, you’ll pass a couple more notable arches gracefully arcing out into the water. Lovers Leap and Grand Portal are two of the most scenic spots along the cliffs , making for gorgeous photos as they curve into Lake Superior’s turquoise blue waters. The smaller archway, Lovers Leap, is named after a Native American legend that had young lovers jumping off the cliff here together. Trying this yourself is absolutely not recommended as the water is very shallow at the base. If you want a closer look, kayaks can paddle through.

Tall cliff known as Grand Portal with rubble blocking the natural archway from a rockfall

Grand Portal is the tallest portion of the cliffs here, and the archway was once large enough that decent sized boats could sail through it. Multiple rockfalls eventually blocked the way, unfortunately.

Passengers on the top deck of a Pictured Rocks tour boat inside a narrow inlet called Chapel Cove

Chapel Cove is a small inlet surrounded by cliffs on three sides. The water was incredibly calm that day, so the captain said he was going to take us up close to see it. I wasn’t expecting him to pull us all the way inside the cove though. The rock walls felt so close that I could almost reach out and touch them. It was pretty incredible, because our triple decker tour boat was not small.

Looking out at Lake Superior from a Pictured Rocks cruise tour inside Chapel Cove

If you opt for the Spray Falls tour like we did, the final major landmark you’ll see is the namesake waterfall itself. Unlike Bridalveil Falls, this one runs constantly. It drops 65 feet straight off the cliff into Lake Superior and makes for a spectacular sight. The area at the base of the falls was also the location of a major shipwreck, where a boat named the Superior sank in a storm in the 1850s.

Spray Falls, a thin waterfall dropping directly off a cliff into Lake Superior in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

At the falls, the boat makes a U-turn and heads back to Munising . People on the left side will get to enjoy the better views for the return trip, which is great. As you approach the harbor, the boat makes a brief detour to see a small historic lighthouse on Grand Island . It’s no longer operational, but its muted wooden siding gives it a unique look. We were also treated to the sight of a bald eagle high in a tree above it which was exciting.

pictured rocks cruise cost

Once we docked, the disembarking process went quickly. Even though we were on the top deck, furthest from the stairs, we made it off pretty quickly.

What to bring for a Pictured Rocks boat tour

  • Layers – I was very glad to have a hoodie with me that I could pop on when the wind made things chilly.
  • Sunscreen – If you’re gunning for a seat on the top deck, you’ll be straight in the sun the whole time.
  • Water – I did not bring my water bottle and I regretted it.
  • Pre-printed or digital tickets if you’ve purchased them ahead of time. This allows you to skip the line inside the gift shop.

Amenities on board the Pictured Rocks Cruises boats

Our boat had bathrooms available on the lowest deck. There was also a small cash-only snack bar where you could get cans of pop, bottles of water, and light snacks. Drinks were only $1 each, which I didn’t think was bad at all. Other than that, it was pretty basic. Note that you are allowed to bring your own snacks and drinks on board (no alcohol) so you can pack your favorites with you.

Arrival and logistics

Munising is a pretty small town, so finding the docks is easy. There is plenty of free parking available in a dirt lot near the ticket office, so I wouldn’t anticipate having trouble parking your car. As noted before, it’s recommended to arrive at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure if you want to snag one of the good seats.

If you’ve ordered your tickets ahead of time – and you really should – you can print them at home or show them on your phone . I had great cell service in town, so I had no issues opening the .pdf, but if you’re not confident in your network it’s worth downloading them ahead of time. Tickets can be printed inside the ticket office/gift shop as well.

Speaking of the gift shop – we actually loved it. Whoever was picking the designs for the shirts completely shared my taste and I would’ve happily bought at least 80% of the store. My fiance and I each had a terrible time choosing just one shirt each. Usually I’ll hunt around and maybe find a design or two that I really like, but there were great ones everywhere here, and they really weren’t expensive for a gift shop.

Photo of Lovers Leap, a natural stone arch curving into Lake Superior, with text overlay reading "Pictured Rocks scenic cruises - a must-do in Michigan"

I LOVE Pictured Rocks! I’ve never done a cruise there though so would love to return for that 🙂

They are now offering a sunset cruise as well. Do you think it would be worth it to go twice once for photos and once for the sunset?

The sunset cruise does sound amazing! I don’t necessarily think it would be worth going twice just to see the sunset version though. If it were me, I’d pick one or the other. You could always drive into the National Lakeshore to the Miner’s Castle area to watch sunset on your own as well if you did the regular day cruise.

grand-island-title

Grand Island stretches north for 8 miles, from its southpoint at Williams Landing in Munising Bay to the north end at North Point. Only three miles across at its widest point, Grand lsland offers 35 miles of shoreline, encompassing over 13,500 acres of dense woodland, including several lakes. Rapid-flowing streams cut through the rugged hills, and massive 300 foot wave-cut sandstone cliffs. Beaches of fine sand, winter ice caves and historic buildings and artifacts dating back as far as 2,000 BC are just a few of its highlights. Archeological investigations indicate that Grand Island has been inhabited for at least 3,300 years. In the 1660’s, when the explorer priests arrived from France, the Ojibwa culture on Grand Island was already thriving.

Located only ½ mile offshore from Munising this island is 9 miles long and up to 3 miles wide with many beaches, sea caves, arches, cliffs, and wildlife abounds. Same geology as the Pictured Rocks.    The first Settlers came to the Island in the early 1800’s when trading for furs was the prime industry. Evidence of this activity is still apparent there. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1846, setting up a trading post there to trade with the Ojibway Indians.

Pictured Rocks Adventures: A Comprehensive Guide to the National Lakeshore

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a commission for purchases made through these links. This site also contains affiliate links to products besides Amazon and we may also receive a commission for purchases.

Did you know that there are three National Lakeshores in the US, and Pictured Rocks holds the title for oldest? There are countless places in the 73,236-acre National Lakeshore for your Pictured Rocks adventures to begin!

Pictured Rocks sights can be seen both from land and the water.

With more and more people discovering the great outdoors one way or another, National Parks in particular have become what many look to as an ideal destination. There are plenty of beautiful landscapes and reasons to visit each one, but have you ever taken notice of the only slightly less popular national monuments, forests, seashores, and lakeshores?

We certainly hadn’t put much of a focus on them in the past, but lately have found that many are absolutely worth a visit.

Here are some of the best things to do and see while adventuring through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Where is Pictured Rocks?

Pictured Rocks is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. You know, the part of Michigan many forget about.

The protected shore extends for 42 miles between the towns of Munising and Grand Marais, Michigan.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore sites on the southern shores of Lake Superior, the largest of the five Great Lakes.

Costs to Visit?

In 2023, a seven-day pass to enter Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore lands costs $20 per car. Motorcycle passes are $15 per motorcycle. Walk-in passes cost $10.

Activities such as guided hikes, boat tours, and rentals each have their own fees. More details can be found in the individual adventure descriptions.

Best Pictured Rocks Adventures, Places to See & Things to Do

Lake Superior Boat Cruise

It’s commonly known that the best way to see the impressive cliffs and formations is from Lake Superior.

The 2-3 hour tours offer a variety of options to see the cliffs and their beautiful colors and formations.

The cruises offer the best opportunity to see some of the shoreline waterfalls straight on, including Spray Falls and Bridalveil Falls.

The narration by the vessel captains is a little cheesy but really brings the rock formations to life.

If you only have half of a day to spend in Pictured Rocks, then you should definitely plan to take a Pictured Rocks boat cruise .

Taking in a sunset over Lake Superior from a Pictured Rocks cruise is a stunning way to end a day spent in the national lakeshore.

Battleship Row Pictured Rocks Cruise

Pictured Rocks Kayaking Adventures

For those looking to experience the cliffs and lake with a little bit of a workout, check out a Pictured Rocks Kayak Tour. These are for those willing to brave the ever-changing Lake Superior waters.

Kayaking is a great way to get up close and personal with the cliffs, but tours are often rescheduled due to weather conditions.

It is recommended to take a group tour, as well, and there are multiple companies in the area to choose from. Tour lengths vary from a couple of hours to multiday hiking combination adventures.

Explore a shipwreck

Lake Superior is known for swallowing ships in stormy weather. Weather can change by the minute on the lake, and there aren’t many places for the boats to seek safe haven.

Munising Bay, sheltered by Grand Island, is one of the few shelters, but entering the bay was difficult for early navigators.

There are 73 known shipwrecks in Munising Bay, and with such clear Lake Superior waters, many can be viewed through Glass Bottom Boat Tours.

Tours typically run from Memorial Day through the end of September and will guide you around two of those ships eternally resting in Munising Bay during the two-hour tour.

Log Slide Overlook

For a little history lesson, stop by the Log Slide Overlook. From the parking lot, the lesson begins.

There are the remnants of a cabin in an opening beside the parking lot where workers may have lived. Logging equipment sits in a shelter along the short trail ending at the overlook.

The elements caused damage to the overlook platform, but the views remain unspoiled.

The logging industry was an important part of the history of the Lakeshore, so be sure to make time to stop at this site.

The Log Slide Overlook provides a beautiful view and a history lesson along a short hike.

Grand Sable Dunes

The huge Grand Sable Dunes are a great place to adventure around Pictured Rocks. We didn’t have nearly the same crowds as some of the other points of interest, especially the waterfalls.

The Dunes cover about 5 square miles and do include difficult walking in soft sand, so be prepared.

What you will be rewarded with are spectacular views of Lake Superior and feeling like you are both at the end and on top of the world looking over the 300 feet high banks.

Leftover from glaciers in the area, the landscape is drastically different from other areas of the park.

Sable Dunes is a great spot to spend adventuring in Pictured Rocks.

Catch a view of the popular named rock formations, like Miner’s Castle…

You won’t have to look far to find a postcard or print of Miner’s Castle, one of the most popular rock formations.

Though it has changed and worn from the elements and lost one of its turrets to the lake in 2006. Three separate overlooks sit just a short walk away via a paved path.

Though beautiful, it’s also the most easily accessible view, contributing to its popularity. Just a short visit here will suffice.

Miner's Castle is one of the most popular rock formations in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

…or Chapel Rock, a Wonder of Nature

Another of the most popular sights sits along Chapel Beach, known as Chapel Rock.

The popular rock is home to a thriving tree around 250 years old, with its roots extending from the mainland. The roots were once held up by a rock arch, but that collapsed in the 1940s.

The tree hasn’t missed a beat and is now an extremely popular spot to photograph.

The hike to reach Chapel Rock and the beach is one of, if not the best hikes in Michigan. Along the hike, you will find inland lakes, rivers, multiple waterfalls, and old forests.

At least half a day, if not more time, could be spent exploring these beautiful areas, including the rock via multiple routes of 8-10+ miles of adventure in Pictured Rocks.

Chapel Rock is a beautiful destination for the best Pictured Rocks adventure.

Au Sable Light Station

Though it can be seen from various lookout points along the shore, the Au Sable Light Station is reached via a 1.5-mile hike on a sandy access road from the Hurricane River Campground.

The tallest light station in the area can be explored via a guided ranger tour in the warmer months from June through at least September. Tours typically last 30-40 minutes and cost $3. The park asks that you be prepared with exact change, and you will be rewarded with even more breathtaking views.

If you don’t wish to take the guided tour, wandering the sandy grounds is free.

Check out the nearby beach, detailed below, to find washed-up shipwreck remains.

Hike to one of the many breathtaking waterfalls

The topography of the region lends itself perfectly to waterfall formation. Because of this, it is said that there are over 300 in Michigan’s upper peninsula alone.

This list includes some of the most impressive, and all of these are located within the National Lakeshore.

Munising Falls

This is the closest Pictured Rocks waterfall adventure to the town of Munising.

This waterfall is 50 feet tall and can be seen following a short, accessible paved path.

There are multiple viewing platforms once reaching the falls, a nice touch because these falls can be quite crowded.

Seeing the flow of Munising Falls is an easily accessible Pictured Rocks adventure spot.

Miners Falls

For a slightly longer hike to another waterfall 50 feet tall, plan to visit Miner’s Falls. The hike covers just over a mile on a dirt path with mild elevation changes.

This is the most powerful of all the area waterfalls with the most water flow.

There are two viewing areas, one just at the end of the path and the second a short walk down 50+ stairs to a lower platform.

This waterfall hike also gets quite busy during peak seasons and times of the day.

Miner's Falls is a strong flowing waterfall in Pictured Rocks.

Elliot Falls

Pouring into Lake Superior on Mosquito Beach, you’ll find this small gem.

One of the smallest on this list, Elliot Falls is sometimes dried up during periods of less rain.

When Lake Superior shows its power and the waves are crashing, this small waterfall can be swallowed into the lake.

Chapel Falls

Chapel Falls can be found by walking through old-growth forests on a wide, well-marked trail. The falls drop 60 feet into Chapel Lake, creating a beautiful setting.

Begin with just over a mile of hiking, and find yourself near two overlooks to take in the scenery.

Combine Chapel Falls, Mosquito Falls, and Chapel Beach for one of the best day hikes in Michigan.

Chapel Falls can be viewed from multiple viewing platforms along the trail.

Chapel Beach Falls

Another beach waterfall can be found on the east side of Chapel Beach.

Chapel Creek can be found cascading between the beach and Chapel Rock, with a small wooden footbridge crossing over the creek at the top for a lovely view.

This is a beautiful, gentle cascade where you can experience the spray of the falls, not just a view from afar.

Chapel Beach Falls is best experienced and is one of the sights along the most beautiful Michigan hiking trail.

Mosquito Falls

Definitely, one of the shorter falls you will come across during your Pictured Rocks adventures, Mosquito Falls can be found nestled among the forested trails.

You’ll also find some quite steep sections of the trail covered in tree roots on this portion.

The drop on the falls here measures in at about 8 feet.

Combine with Chapel Falls and Beach for over 10 miles of hiking.

Mosquito Falls is one of the smaller but wider waterfalls in Pictured Rocks.

Spend some time on one of the gorgeous Lake Superior Beaches

Beautiful beaches sit alternating with the picturesque colorful cliffs. Each has its own draw, but none are lacking views. Many even provide accessible walkways, overlooks, and access to Lake Superior waters.

Here are the best beaches, in order from west to east, from Munising to Grand Marais.

Sand Point Beach

Sand Point Beach, closest to Munising, has the warmest water and least waves because it is sheltered by the bay. This is the best beach in the area for swimming and family-friendly activities as its waters are quite shallow.

The waters are also likely to be the warmest of all the Pictured Rocks beaches.

Sand Point Beach also has wheelchair-accessible picnic table options and a mat over the sand.

Miner’s Beach

Also easily accessible via a short walk and a set of stairs, Miner’s Beach sits just past Miner’s Castle.

The beach is almost a mile long, but it is the start location where many kayak tours meet and launch. This brings larger crowds in the summer.

This is the best spot to catch beautiful views of Bridalveil Falls at its peak flow in the spring.

Mosquito Beach

Heading to Mosquito Beach is a popular day hiking activity, and one of the more difficult beaches to reach via a 4-mile hike.

With small waterfalls along the way, the hike is never boring.

Catch glimpses of the surrounding cliffs and be rewarded by the seasonal Elliot Falls when the lake is calmer.

Chapel Beach

Chapel Beach requires the most work to reach, with no less than 6 miles of hiking required.

The trails are more difficult due to the length, and there are some elevation changes, roots, and rocks along portions of the trail.

The rewards are unmatched views and sights along the way. One of the best Pictured Rocks and Upper Peninsula adventures, this beach has something to see at every angle.

Beautiful beaches line Pictured Rocks and Chapel Beach is no different.

Twelvemile Beach

As obvious from the name, the beach is 12 miles long, with plenty of space and soft sand to enjoy. There are flights of stairs leading down to the beach access.

Twelvemile Beach is located in the middle of Pictured Rocks, and also features a campground with easy access to the water.

Hurricane River Beach

The next beach to come across along the shore is Hurricane River Beach.

This is the most versatile of the Pictured Rocks beaches, always changing looks due to the elements.

Hurricane River Beach is home to the most shipwreck remains to be found in Pictured Rocks. If you’re looking for a treasure hunt. search Pictured Rocks adventure, check out Hurricane River Beach. Just be sure not to disturb the wreckage; it’s protected by the National Parks Service.

The beach is also located near a campground, making it easily accessible.

Sable Falls Beach

Easily accessible just past Sable Falls on the boardwalk trail, you will find the last Pictured Rocks beach.

Catch glimpses of the Dunes from a different vantage point, below, here.

This is the rockiest of the beaches, but remember, it is prohibited to remove any of the rocks from the location.

Backpack the North Country Scenic Trail
