When visiting Southern California with kids, there is one location that simply must be visited. On the outskirts of San Diego, this Lego-themed resort is a magical and fun-filled fun town for kids.

The park contains more than 60 rides shows and attractions suitable for kids aged 2-12. The water park, set to reopen this year, features more than seven slides over 10 acres of aquatic fun. The Lego Movie World brings hit movies to life in all their Lego glory. Legoland even features its own aquarium full of sharks, octopi, and more.

With free parking and general admission at just $24.95, Adventure City is a great place to get all the fun of some of the bigger parks without the prices and long queues.

The Freeway Coaster and Rewind Racer rides are as hair raising as any others, while the Express Train and Carousel are well suited to younger children. This weekend-only park even has its own petting farm, adding more variety to this thoroughly enjoyable day out.

With this in mind, it is usually best to try and visit San Diego Zoo either in the morning or late afternoon. There is also the incredible Birch Aquarium that is an absolute must-visit.

If you want to do something mellow and do not want to plan much, simply go down to the incredible beaches and spend a quiet day with the family there.

There are a lot of hiking trails for when the mercury is a little higher, such as the incredible Fallen Leaf Trail.

If you want to wade into the waters, there is also Pope Beach that will give you the sense of being at a beach destination even when you are deep into the woods.

There is also a spectacular helicopter tour that you can take around the lake and capture the incredible view.

I would even suggest renting a boat for the family and enjoying some adventures in the water.

8. Santa Cruz

There are several incredible restaurants and eating options you can enjoy on the boardwalk.

There is no room for you to be left bored or wanting more during a family holiday at Newport Beach .

This is a destination that will take care of everyone.

Upon settling those things, it’s time to pick the specific places to add to your itinerary.

Luxury lovers can have the best time at the Beverly Hills Hotel – Dorchester Collection.

From the upscale vibe to the friendly service, this place offered everything we needed for a short but sweet vacation.

But its high cost can be a dealbreaker for most travelers, especially those on a budget.

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills gave us expansive rooms where we slept like babies, making our trip highly comfortable.

However, this place needs to improve customer service to serve future guests better.

On the other hand, Montage Laguna Beach was one of our favorites because of its proximity to the beach and wide array of kid-friendly activities.

One drawback we observed was the insufficient training given to the staff.

If you’re going to Half Moon Bay, we recommend staying at Ritz-Carlton because of its secluded ambiance that provides a much-needed breather.

On the flip side, epicures need time to get to nearby restaurants due to the property’s cliffside location.

Why you’ve got to go: This colorful pier has classic American-style arcade games, a diner, and carnival rides. You’ll have a fun day building memories in one of California’s most iconic piers. Plus, there is something for children of all ages to love.

What to do: Go for a ride on the Ferris Wheel, go for a swim, tan on the beach, play arcade games, or go for a ride. There are often street performers happy to do tricks or paint portraits so long as you have a few dollars to spare. Grab a bite of classic carnival fare and take a free historical walking tour to learn more about the pier’s intriguing history.

27. Venice Beach

Why you’ve got to go: Lively and colorful street performers will entertain children and adults all day long. The skatepark, beach, outside gym, basketball courts, and shops also mean that nobody will ever get bored.

What to do: Admire street performers’ many talents on the main drag – think acrobats, musicians, contortion, and comedy. Go for a swim in the sea, skate at the skatepark, shop for quirky souvenirs, photograph street art, and have a picnic. In Venice Beach, anything goes when it comes to personality – making your child feel completely at ease.

28. U.S.S. Midway Museum

Why you’ve got to go: The U.S.S. Midway Museum was once a working aircraft carrier that served the military from 1945 to 1992. Over 200,000 sailors served their time on the carrier and it was a fully functioning hub that supported daily life. Today, it’s a museum where you can take an audio tour and learn about maritime history. Kids will love seeing the different planes and imagining how life was once like.

What to do: Go on the flight simulator ride, tour the U.S.S. Midway, learn from former U.S.S. Midway veterans, crawl inside former military aircrafts, and climb to the top of the ship. You and your children will be able to see Coronodo Island, Downtown San Diego, and the Harbor from the top of the ship.

29. Gilroy Gardens

Why you’ve got to go: This family-friendly theme park has safe and fun attractions for younger children. There are over forty rides and exhibits, mostly aimed at children aged three to ten years old. Some fun rides include the Strawberry Sundae, Timber Twister Coaster, and the carousel.

What to do: Spend the day exploring Gilroy Gardens and hopping on fun rides (many of them spin around and around), learning in a hands-on way at the education centers that focus on natural science, and wander through the gardens. The theme park is named after its incredible circus trees, a collection of trees that were manipulated as they grew to form loops, ladders, and other whimsical shapes.

30. La Jolla Shores and Tide Pools

Why you’ve got to go: Children will love spending a full day in the sun exploring tide pools, splashing in the surf, playing at the park, and in the sand. La Jolla Shoes is heavily monitored by some of the city’s best lifeguards and the beach goes into the sea at a gentle slope, making it one of the safest and kid-friendly beaches in the state.

What to do: Look for wildlife in the tidepools, build sandcastles, go swimming, learn how to boogie board or surf, play at the local playground, roll round in the grass, and more. With the sun, sand, and sea, there is no shortage of things to do in La Jolla Shores.

31. Mammoth Mountain

Why you’ve got to go: In the heart of the Sierras, Mammoth Mountain is a mecca for outdoorsmen, snowboarders, skiers, and explorers. The small town is family friendly, and children will love learning how to test their physical limits through all of the outdoor activities on offer here.

What to do: In the winter, go snowboarding, skiing, sledding, and ice skating. Build snowmen and have snowball fights in the forests that surround town. Sip hot cocoa at the lodge or at one of the village’s many comfort-food serving restaurants. In the summer, you can go swimming, hiking, camping, and mountain biking. No kid can get bored in Mammoth.

Why you’ve got to go: Julian is one of the most kid-friendly towns in California. You can spend a weekend visiting a hands-on gold and gem mine, fruit orchard, and walk through wilderness. There are also many supposedly haunted sites that will intrigue and offer a good-natured scare to older children.

What to do: Pan for gold and gems at one of the working gold mines, pick fruits at one of the apple or pear orchards and then cook fresh fruit pies, go for a hike, and visit a haunted house. Julian is the type of place that fosters freedom and old-time activities that many children simply don’t get a chance to do while living in the city.

33. Raging Waters

Why you’ve got to go: This 60-acre waterpark is the largest in the state. Children and adults will have a fun time getting wet on the park’s 50 rides and attractions. There are slides that go nearly vertical, wave pools, and even a hydromagnetic rollercoaster.

What to do: Throw on a bathing suit and go down insane rides like the Aqua Rocket, the Dark Hole tube slide, the Bermuda Triangle, and more. Some will have you flying down from the comforts of a raft while others have you fly down as you are. You can also rent a cabana and relax in the shade if the rides prove to be too much.

Get there when kids are: Ages 5 to 18 – make sure that they can swim well.

34. STAR Eco Station

Why you’ve got to go: Children will practice empathy as they volunteer with injured animals and learn about wildlife. STAR Eco Station is a science museum that houses illegally-trafficked exotic animals that were captured by the Fish and Wildlife Service. It’s a chance to see exotic creatures while helping a great cause.

What to do: Participate in hands-on rescue activities, learn about these colorful and rare creatures, and practice conservation techniques. There is an eco-camp where children can get more involved with the organization as well.

35. Star of India

Why you’ve got to go: The Star of India is the world’s oldest active sailing shop. Built in 1863, The Star of India has sailed around the world 21 times and was once trapped in ice in Alaska. Today, the ship still sails the open sea and offers tours for children and adults interested in seeing what life would’ve been like as a world-class sailor.

What to do: Take a tour of the Star of India and see how the many sails work, lay in the same bed that the sailors did, and learn more about life aboard this incredible ship. Make a weekend of watching the Pirates of the Caribbean series, then hopping on the Star of India for a wonderful imaginary experience.

36. Bass Lake

Why you’ve got to go: This lake nestled just eleven miles from the gates of Yosemite is a place for family fun once summertime comes around. Boating is very popular here and there are a multitude of summer camps based in the region.

What to do: Go water skiing, inner tubing, hiking, wakeboarding, jet skiing, fishing, and more. This is a great place to stay while exploring Yosemite National Park and the rest of the Sierra Mountains. Children are welcome at the local mom-and-pop restaurants that serve the Bass Lake community.

37. Rolling Robots

Why you’ve got to go: Tech-talented children will love Rolling Robots, a place that teaches children how to build and control miniature robots. They will learn about circuit diagrams, components, magnetism, LED, compasses, and more. It’s a place where you can focus on technology and creativity.

What to do: Enroll your kid a science camp that are specifically tailored for your child’s interests. There are themes like bots with brains, mechanical robots, video game design, and bots for tots for younger builders. Why you’ve got to go: Puppets have been a source of entertainment for children for hundreds of years. We have television shows based on them, street performers often capture the attention of a child with them, and now, you can experience a theatrical marionette performance on a grand and personal scale at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater.

What to do: Take your child to see a live performance of puppets that have come to life. There are a variety of shows that take place at a time, so you can go back again and again without getting bored.

39. Hollywood Walk of Fame

Why you’ve got to go: Walk along the path of stars and look for the names of your children’s favorite celebrities. Street performers and celebrity look-alikes often line the pathway and are always ready to pose for a picture. This is a great place for children to learn about the history of Tinsel Town and you can follow up the experience by heading to the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

What to do: Take pictures with the street performers, search for specific names, watch a movie at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. The area is also filled with record stores, restaurants, and bakeries to visit once you’ve scratched the walk of fame off your bucket list.

40. Calico Ghost Town

Why you’ve got to go: If you end up near Barstow, you have to visit the Calico Ghost Town that stands as a preserved mining town from the late 1800s. Children will love feeling as though they’ve stepped back into the wild western days of shootouts and lucky strikes. Interestingly, rumor has it that the town is haunted – and nearly every child loves a ghost story.

What to do: Take pictures of the perfectly preserved late 1800s architecture, go on a ghost tour, visit an old mine, and walk down the main street. Kids will love the fact that this little town is unlike anywhere else.

11 Amazing Spring Break Destinations in California for Families

Several years ago, my family resolved to travel more of our home state of California. We realized we were jetting around all over the country and the world while missing out on amazing destinations right in our backyard. In fact, these were the very same destinations that many other people jetted from all over the world to see! We’ve been roadtripping the state on school breaks and weekends ever since. As a result, we’ve discovered a lot of destinations in the Golden State to recommend to other families.

So with spring break planning season in full swing, I wanted to recommend a few of our favorites! Spring break is an exceptionally good time to visit many destinations in California because the hotter areas of the state aren’t quite so hot yet. Plus, if you prefer the cold, the Sierras still have plenty of snow in March and April.

If you are looking for a great place to vacation for spring break, California has so many places to consider! Here are my top 10 recommendations for the best destinations in California for spring break travel.

Top California Spring Break Destinations

1. palm springs.

Palm Springs is a dream California destination during spring break. It’s warm enough to enjoy the outdoors and the pool but not yet blazing with desert heat. We traveled there for our family’s 2016 spring break and found so much for family travelers – from the Palm Springs Aerial Tram to the Living Desert Museum to the Palm Springs Air Museum. Travelers looking to hit the hiking trails can plan a day trip excursion to Joshua Tree National Park or stick closer to town exploring Indian Canyons. And if you like golf, there is plenty of that too.

The family-friendly luxe resorts are plentiful in and around Palm Springs and surrounding towns like Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, and Indian Springs. Consider the Omni Rancho Las Palmas or the Waldorf Astoria’s La Quinta Resort & Club for great pools and kid-friendly amenities.

2. Monterey & Santa Cruz

Within a short weekend or even day trip drive of the San Francisco Bay Area are two nearby destinations with a lot to offer families during spring break. You can conveniently visit both Monterey and Santa Cruz from a single home base.

Santa Cruz ‘s laid back beach vibe and world famous Beach Boardwalk provide lots of family fun, but you can also enjoy non-beach activities too. My kids love nearby Roaring Camp Railroads for a ride aboard a real narrow gauge railway through the redwoods (see other train rides in Northern California ). The Mystery Spot is also good clean family fun.

Head about 45 minutes further south to visit the city of Monterey, which is home to one of the best aquariums in the world – the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa is a well-located lodging option nearby. It has room types big enough for families right on Cannery Row within walking distance of the aquarium.

Nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea is another quaint seaside town in the area worthy of a stop as well. For a truly unique lodging experience there at a moderate price point, consider the Bavarian-themed Hofsas House Hotel .

3. San Diego

In all fairness, you really can’t go wrong with San Diego during any time of year, but spring break visits are as good as any of them. From the world renowned San Diego Zoo to Sea World, there are lots of activities for travelers with children. Head further north to nearby Carlsbad for a visit to Legoland California for what is becoming increasingly popular theme park alternative to Disneyland (shh – don’t tell Disney I said that!). Follow this three day San Diego itinerary to hit the highlights.

Hotel options in the San Diego area abound, but travelers with kids will find the Hotel del Coronado a great family beach retreat. Up near Legoland in Carlsbad, the Omni La Costa is ideal for families with a kids club and cool splash pads.

San Diego is one of the largest cruise ports on the West Coast, so a lot of travelers may use it as a jumping off point for spring break cruise adventures. In fact, we’ll be spending some of our family’s 2023 spring break in San Diego before we head out on a Disney Cruise to the Mexican Riviera.

4. Disneyland

Speaking of Disneyland, frequent readers know how much my family adores Walt’s original park. I would certainly be remiss in not recommending it to California visitors in the spring when the Southern California weather is glorious. In the last few years, a lot has changed at Disneyland so be sure to read up on the latest offerings and rule changes.

Even though Disneyland is crowded nearly year round these days, spring break isn’t always as bad as the peak of Christmas or every other holiday. The Southern California school systems usually don’t all take breaks at the same time, so the crowd convergence doesn’t come from everywhere all in one single week. The last time my family went to Disneyland during our kids’ official spring break holiday, we managed to get in 20 rides on a single day’s park hopper ticket in spite of it being a traditionally higher crowd time.

During much of the spring, Disney California Adventure park is home to its annual Food & Wine Festival . If you have time to visit more than one theme park, nearby Knott’s Berry Farm a few minutes away in Buena Park holds its annual Knott’s Boysenberry Festival as well. N

Where to stay on a Disneyland vacation? If you can splurge, the Disneyland Hotel or Grand Californian are always amazing choices, particularly now that early entry privileges are back this year! Off-property, our family loves the Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance but there are dozens of other hotels nearby that we’ve enjoyed over the years. 5. Lake Tahoe

As much as my family adores skiing, we visit Lake Tahoe more than nearly anywhere else in California. At just about 3 hours from San Francisco and just a hop, skip, and a jump from Reno, it’s easily accessible even for folks coming from much farther than the local crowds.

Unless it is an exceptional drought or very warm year, ski resorts in Northern California are often open during most spring break periods – often well into April. You can often enjoy some bluebird spring skiing days with excellent snow conditions. You will certainly find us skiing at our favorite family-friendly resort, Northstar California , in March and April many years! The resort that tends to stay open the longest into the spring in the Tahoe area is Palisades Tahoe, but Kirkwood and Heavenly historically tend to stay open later than some other resorts as well.

If you want to introduce your kids to one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth, Big Sur should be high on your list. This stretch of California’s central coast features dramatic seaside overlooks, waterfalls, and amazing hiking and beaches.

The area is also known for its extremely friendly California hippie vibe so it can make for an intriguing cultural exchange too. You’ll be greeted with smiles wherever you go. Plus, you can do Big Sur on the cheap (just book in advance because limited accommodations do fill up).

If you have older kids, the drive a bit further south to San Simeon to visit Hearst Castle is a nice excursion as well.

7. Pinnacles National Park

If you haven’t heard of this national park, you are in good company. Most people – including even me until recently! – haven’t. Up until 2013, Pinnacles was a national monument, but it got called up to the big leagues not long ago, making it one of America’s newest national parks.

The park is inland in the Salinas Valley southeast of Gilroy, making it very close to the Bay Area and doable on a trip to Monterey, Carmel, or even Big Sur. Pinnacles is best explored in the spring (or fall) to avoid summer heat. It offers a number of kid-friendly hikes and some amazing geological features formed by the fracturing of the San Andreas fault.

8. Avenue of the Giants

The coastal redwoods are some of the most iconic tourist attractions for visitors to Northern California. The dramatic Avenue of the Giants just south of Eureka is a beautiful drive with trees so high you can barely see the tops. Plan for time for hiking and be sure to make a stop at the Shrine Drive Thru tree in Myers Flat as well as the Chandelier Drive Thru Tree south of the area in Leggett.

Head further north towards the Oregon state line to spend time in Redwood National and State Parks for even more redwood exploration. Or combine this trip with stops in Mendocino or Sonoma counties .

Nice family-friendly lodging options are few and far between this far north in the state, but we found the Benbow Inn charming with a delectable and delicious outdoor weekend brunch.

9. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is a bit of a victim of its own success in the summer. Crowds can be truly out of control then, so avoid the masses and go in the spring instead! The waterfalls are often at their most dramatic in April when the snowmelt begins anyway.

The spring season can wet and sometimes even snowy, so watch the forecast carefully. But if you can manage a little mud on your hikes, the payoff of the lower crowds and dramatic views is enormous. Bonus – if the weather is still cold enough, you can usually still ski at Yosemite’s own ski resort, Badger Pass, in late March and sometimes into early April.

10. San Francisco

Next up for spring break fun is my home city, the City by the Bay! San Francisco has so much to offer no matter how long you have to visit. Spend the entire week exploring sites like Pier 39, Alcatraz, Ghirardelli Square , Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, Union Square, and many more family-friendly sites. Or use San Francisco as a jumping off point for other excursions around Northern California.

There are a million different hotel choices in San Francisco but I personally love the Westin St. Francis for its prime Union Square location.

11. Greater Los Angeles

Last but certainly not least, I have to throw a mention to the other big city in the state – Los Angeles. As a NorCal girl, I don’t always give the city and region its fair due. But there are so many kid-friendly attractions and destinations for families to visit by making LA your home base.

On the northern side of the city, visit Griffith Park for outdoor space and its world class planetarium at Griffith Observatory. Kids will also enjoy attractions like the La Brea tarpits and taking in the many entertainment sights in and around Hollywood. There are amusement and theme parks beyond just Disneyland too, including Universal Studios Hollywood and Six Flags Magic Mountain, both of which have more thrill rides that older kids and teens will enjoy.

The weather in March and April is usually just about perfect in Los Angeles, so make some time at one or more of the regions many beaches – from Malibu in the north to Santa Monica and Venice near the city proper. Orange County just south of the city has Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, and many more.

Muir Woods National Monument

• This is a National Monument outside of San Francisco.
• Federally protected as a National Monument since 1908.

Something to see with the family in Northern California is the Muir Woods National Monument. Here, people can witness a part of California’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area, north of San Francisco. It's known for its historic redwood trees, scenery, hiking trails, picnic areas, and educational seminars, all of which are accessible to guests free of charge. With Mother's Day less than a week away, families around the country are looking to make the day special.

OpenTable released its Top 100 Brunch Restaurants in America for 2024 Tuesday to help diners find the best place to treat their moms.

The company said it compiled the list from over 14 million diner reviews, ratings and the percentage of times a review was tagged as "brunch."

The Mother's Day experience appears to be moving away from breakfast in bed towards brunch as 54% of Americans plan to dine out for the holiday, according to a survey conducted by OpenTable. The number that rises for members of Gen-Z, 65%, and Millennials, 64%.

OpenTable said that 43% of reservations made through the company last year were in the 11:00 a.m. – 2:59 p.m. window.

Oldest living Japanese American, 110, who still gets her hair done weekly, shares tips for long life

With 110 years of life behind her, Yoshiko Miwa isn’t going to wallow in the negative, and she doesn’t want you to either.

The oldest living person of Japanese descent in the United States, according to the Gerontology Research Group , Miwa prefers to focus on the times when she was happiest. She’s lived through the Spanish flu, prohibition, Black Tuesday, World War II, and the losses of her parents, siblings and friends, and still the supercentenarian’s go-to piece of longevity advice is: Don’t dwell.

Miwa is part of the nisei — the second-generation Japanese Americans sent to internment camps during World War II — who often say “gaman,” which translates to “enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity,” Alan Miwa, her son, tells TODAY.com. It’s often loosely translated to “perseverance,” “patience,” or “tolerance.”

These feelings, Alan Miwa suspects, are born from the resilience of many from his mother’s generation — who had much to endure. Shikata ga nai (仕方がない), a Japanese phrase meaning, “It cannot be helped,” or, “Nothing can be done about it,” is a common saying among them, too, he adds.

Yoshiko Miwa was born Yoshiko Tanaka on Feb. 28, 1914, in Guadalupe, California, to Japanese immigrants. She was the fifth of seven children. When her mother and infant brother died in 1919, her father struggled to care for his family and tend to the farm he owned. So Yoshiko Miwa and her siblings were sent to live at the children’s home founded by their parish, Guadalupe Buddhist Church.

She went on to graduate from Santa Maria High School in 1932, and she studied business at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1936. She married Henry Miwa in 1939.

During the Second World War, the pair and their families were sent to Poston Internment Camp in Arizona before relocating to Hawthorne, California, after the war. When they, along with many other Japanese people, had difficulty finding work upon their release in 1945, her husband founded a plant nursery business, and in 1963, Yoshiko Miwa got her nursing license.

Yoshiko Miwa has three sons, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grand children and one great-great-grandchild.

These days, Alan Miwa says she’s in good health and lives in a care facility, where she gets her hair done weekly and attends church services on Sundays.

In addition to a positive spirit, keeping your mind and body active is the key to a long life, Yoshiko Miwa has said in the past . Ahead she shares a few other aspects of her life that she believes have led to her longevity.

She keeps an ever-expanding roster of hobbies

When Yoshiko Miwa retired, she'd walk 4 miles each morning. In 1990, at 76, she walked a 20K as part of the March of Dimes Walkathon. She’s an avid reader, she practices ikebana (flower arranging), sumi-e (Japanese ink art), sashiko (Japanese stitching), sewing, furniture refinishing and reupholstery.

These days, though, her favorite activity is sleeping, she tells TODAY.com via email.

She wrote an autobiography

After taking a writing course, Yoshiko Miwa penned an autobiography. In it, she recalls her travels to Rome, Japan, Paris and Niagara Falls. She describes life in the children’s home and the long walks to school, her siblings and her childhood with her parents.

“We had a big pasture for the horses and cows to graze on,” she wrote of her family’s farm her in autobiography. “Some days, my sister and I would wander around the pasture to pick wild violets that grew there.”

She loves to eat noodles

Yoshiko Miwa’s a fan of any kind of noodles, eating them every day. “When I was in the children’s home, the cook used to make noodles and I used to love them,” she says. “Today, I like spaghetti, udon, ramen, soba and any other kind of noodles.”

Her faith energizes her

Yoshiko Miwa is grateful to Rev. and Mrs. Issei Matsuura of the Guadalupe Buddhist Church, who took her in when her mother died of the Spanish flu.

Yoshiko Miwa was 4 years old when her father turned to the church for help. “The church then started a children’s home and taught us Buddhism, Japanese language, Japanese culture and responsibility,” she recalls. “I’ve always been indebted to Rev. and Mrs. Matsuura.”  

... And her family does, too

The Miwa family travels together and hosts reunions. “I’ve been fortunate that my sons, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren and relatives have always been there for me,” says Yoshiko Miwa.

“Because my mother died so young, I have never enjoyed the warmth and love of a family unit,” she wrote in her autobiography. “Later, when I had my children, I keenly felt the wholesomeness of a complete family.”
