Fincantieri Monfalcone floats out Princess Cruises’ next-gen Sun Princess

facebook

Seen here following float out, Sun Princess will be Princess Cruises' largest ship yet and its first to be LNG-fueled.

Carnival Corporation’s Princess Cruises brand has celebrated construction milestone with the float out of its next-generation ship, Sun Princess, at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone, Italy, shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

Following the Italian shipyard’s tradition, the float out is marked by a special ceremony where a “Madrina” is named to offer blessings and best wishes for the vessel, celebrating the flow of water into the ship’s building dock. Princess Cruises hotel general manager Simona Stumberger was selected to serve in this special role as an ambassador for Princess, because, says the cruise line, “she epitomizes professionalism and always delivers service with a smile.”

This is the brand’s third ship to carry the Sun Princess name, adding to the legacy of the first ship sailing from 1974 to 1988 and the second ship sailing from 1995 to 2020. That first ship was the setting for the Love Boat TV series and carried just 700 guests. The new 175,000 gt ship will be the brand’s largest ship ever and will accommodate 4,300 guests.

The float out completes the first comprehensive phase of construction for Sun Princess, which now transitions to focus on building the ship’s interiors —which, as we previewed last year , promise to be spectacular.

The 21-deck, 1,133 feet-long Sun Princess will offer guests an array of new dining, entertainment and activity offerings, as well as luxurious staterooms and suites across a broad spectrum of categories. The ship will be highlighted by spectacular public spaces such as The Dome, a transformational entertainment venue inspired by the terraces of Santorini, the next-level, brand-iconic Piazza, and three-story Horizons Dining Room.

In addition, Sun Princess has been designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. The ship’s sustainability features include:

Fuel and energy management

Sun Princess will be the first ship in the Princess fleet to be powered by LNG, with an LNG capacity of 4,000 cubic meters, sufficient for almost 9 days sailing at service speed. The secondary fuel is marine gas-oil so no heavy or intermediate fuel oil will be carried on board.

Two shore power connections, on both the port and starboard side of the vessel, will enable “cold ironing,” with the cruise ship able to turn off the engines and connect to local electric power to run all onboard services during port calls. Sun Princess is outfitted with custom-built electrical connection cabinets that automatically connect the ship’s electrical network to the local electrical network ashore, reducing air emissions in the ports that support shore power.

Waste management

A micro auto gasification system (MAGS) is installed for waste. MAGS is the world’s most compact, efficient and environmentally safe technology to convert a variety of combustible materials into thermal energy – energy that can be used in other systems onboard.

The food waste management system is designed with distributed and centralized bio-digesters and dehydrators as a clean alternative to recycle food waste and reduce use of landfills.

The inaugural moment arrived as the Sun Princess, the pioneering LNG (liquefied natural gas) vessel for Princess Cruises, was officially handed over at the Monfalcone shipyard on Wednesday, 14 February. Remaining stationed at the yard for further technical enhancements, this milestone marks a significant advancement in maritime engineering.

Tipping the scales at approximately 178,000 gross tons, the Sun Princess proudly claims the title of Italy’s largest-ever ship construction endeavor. Notably, it signifies the maiden voyage of Fincantieri into LNG-powered cruise ships and marks Princess Cruises’ maiden dual-fuel vessel predominantly fueled by LNG. This technological leap underscores LNG’s status as the pinnacle of environmentally conscious fuel solutions within the maritime sector, known for its ability to curtail greenhouse gas emissions and virtually eradicate airborne pollutants.

Setting the course for future voyages, Sun Princess inaugurates Princess Cruises’ Sphere class, with a companion vessel slated for delivery in 2025. Designed to accommodate around 4,300 passengers, each ship boasts a cutting-edge platform design emblematic of next-generation maritime innovation. Lloyd’s Register, recognized for its unwavering expertise, contributed its guidance to ensure the seamless delivery of the Sun Princess.

As Princess Cruises, a leading global cruise line, steers forward, this delivery heralds a new era of sustainable and luxurious seafaring adventures, promising millions of guests a gateway to over 330 destinations worldwide.

Sun Princess Floats Out at Fincantieri

  • March 8, 2023

Sun Princess

The floating out of the Sun Princess, the first of two LNG cruise ships for Princess Cruises, has taken place at Fincantieri’s yard in Monfalcone.

At 175,500 gross tons, the Sun Princess is the largest ship built so far in Italy, as well as the first LNG cruise ship ever built by Fincantieri, and the first dual-fuel vessel powered primarily by LNG to enter Princess’ fleet. LNG is the marine industry’s most environmentally friendly advanced fuel technology and the world’s cleanest fossil fuel, which will significantly reduce air emissions and marine gasoil usage, Fincantieri said.

The Sun Princess will be delivered in Q1 2024 and starts the Sphere class, which includes a sister-ship to be delivered in 2025. They will each accommodate approximately 4,300 guests and are based on a next-generation platform design.

A ghost pianist and color-changing cocktails: Inside Princess Cruises' hidden magic club

The pianist at a lounge on Princess Cruises’ new ship played the theme song from “Titanic” while guests sipped their cocktails.

It may seem like dark humor, but the musician is a ghost, after all. As the story goes, Isabella lives inside the space entertaining guests (she even takes requests).

In actuality, the instrument – which appeared to play itself – is part of Spellbound by Magic Castle, a new venue on the Sun Princess that combines dinner, drinks and magic. The speakeasy-like space was created in partnership with the Magic Castle , a legendary private club in Los Angeles.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Denise Saviss, the cruise line’s vice president for entertainment experience, said during a recent sailing that the Magic Castle has been a “well-protected secret.”

“As a members-only club, you can only attend by invitation, but they are keen to expand, and a partnership with us was a really great way to do that where we have a ton of international guests who may not ever get over to Hollywood and therefore it's not in reach,” Saviss said.

USA TODAY got a preview of Spellbound during a cruise ahead of its opening next month. Here’s what guests can expect.

What is Spellbound like?

Guests will start the evening with dinner in the Horizons Dining Room, choosing from a menu not found elsewhere on board (our preview did not include the dinner portion). They will then be escorted through an inconspicuous black door off the ship’s Piazza into Spellbound’s small foyer. There, a voice on a speaker tells the story of the Larsen family, who opened the Magic Castle in 1963, for a few minutes.

We were prompted to say the magic words (“Open sesame”), and the fireplace in front of us moved aside to reveal a music room and the Parlor Bar, lined with art and artifacts curated with help from the Magic Castle. A pair of handcuffs used by famed escape artist Harry Houdini even hung on one wall.

Isabella and her companion, a white bird named The Professor, can be seen in a portrait in the music room. She is the cousin of another ghost, Irma, who lives at the Magic Castle in California.

“Irma never loved to travel, but Isabella did,” said Kerry Lovegrove, Princess’ director of entertainment experience. “She traveled probably one too many times across the Atlantic, and then all of a sudden she was lost at sea. So she suddenly found the Sun Princess being built in Monfalcone and thought she’d attach herself onto that ship.”

Isabella disappears from view when she’s ready to play. The Professor, meanwhile, moves over to a nearby birdcage to enjoy the music (I saw him swaying to “My Heart Will Go On” at one point).

Behind the bar, a library holds its own not-so-hidden treasures. I picked up a gold rotary phone and heard someone ask “How can I help?” before changing their mind and hanging up. Guests might also see books float and fall, according to Lovegrove.

Even the drinks appear enchanted. One cocktail I ordered, The Magician, featured butterfly pea tequila that turned from blue to purple as the server poured it into the glass (also containing mezcal, lime, grapefruit, serrano peppers and agave).

Spellbound hosts magic in the bar as well as its 30-seat theater. Before theater seating opened, Mark Gibson kept us glued to his card deck, at one point finding the card a fellow guest chose by cutting the deck with the assistance of a tiny plunger. Woody Aragon also used cards in the theater, including asking an audience member to call someone who wasn’t in the room to pick one. (Spoiler: he named their chosen card correctly.)

The Parlor Bar magician will stay on the ship for a couple of months at a time, and the magician performing in the theater will change every cruise or two, but all are vetted by the Magic Castle team.

When will Spellbound by Magic Castle open?

Spellbound will open April 8 and is now available to book. Guests must be at least 13 to enter and just like at the venue’s Hollywood namesake, there is a mandatory dress code (my invitation called for cocktail attire).

The cruise line also will host its second Magic Castle Conjurer’s Cruise themed sailing on Sun Princess in November.

How much does Spellbound cost?

The experience costs $149 per person, including dinner, entertainment and unlimited drinks.

Spellbound will offer three theater shows a night and can accommodate a total of 90 guests (30 each night). Once they’re in the space, they can stay as long as they like (until it closes for the night). There are dinner seatings at 5, 7 and 9 p.m., and Spellbound is expected to close around midnight, though there is no hard closing time.

Best times to go on a cruise: We broke it down by region

Lovegrove said the venue serves as a new home base for magic, which already proved popular with Princess guests in other spaces on its ships. “If you love magicians, this is the spot for you.”

Fincantieri Monfalcone started the construction/assembly of Princess Cruises' newest ship Star Princess

CruiseMapper logo

Princess Cruises and the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri started the construction/assembly of the second Sphere Class ship - Star Princess . The process started with the official keel-laying ceremony held on Monday, December 11, at Fincantieri's shipyard in Monfalcone Italy .

The keel, constituting the new ship 's foundational structure, represents the initial block in the vessel's construction. The 500-ton (1.1 million pound) keel of Star Princess was methodically positioned onto the keel blocks in the dry dock by crane, where the ship will undergo construction until the float-out phase. This computer-guided maneuver, completed within minutes, marked the commencement of a comprehensive construction process requiring 2+ million man-hours.

Following a conventional blessing and ceremony, Princess and Fincantieri executives incorporated a Princess Medallion into the ship through welding. This symbolic act is believed to bring good fortune to the vessel and its passengers.

At 175,500 tons and accommodating 4,300 guests, Star Princess, alongside her sistership Sun Princess , stands as the largest ever constructed for Princess Cruises. The ship is designed on a platform unique to Princess, blending the cruise line's heritage with an emphasis on the maritime experience, offering enhanced outward views.

Scheduled to debut in August 2025, Star Princess is the second ship in the Princess fleet to utilize LNG fuel technology , incorporating cutting-edge sustainable innovations. Cruises aboard the new ship are currently available for booking.

Subscriber only, transportation | brightline partners with princess cruises, wraps train with ‘love boat’ theme.

princess cruises monfalcone

Florida’s high-speed Brightline train has partnered with Princess Cruises for a “Rail & Sail” program that includes one of its trains made over with the iconic imagery of the brand with ties to “The Love Boat.”

Most Princess ships call Port Everglades home in Fort Lauderdale, including the debut later this year of its newest and largest ship, the Sun Princess. The line is expanding with its first ship to be based out of Port Canaveral this fall when Caribbean Princess arrives.

The nearly 113,000-gross-ton vessel began sailing in 2004, christened by Jill Whelan who played Vicki Stubing on “The Love Boat.” Princess ships were featured during the show’s run in the 1970s and 1980s.

Brightline runs from Miami to Orlando with several stops in South Florida, including Fort Lauderdale and a northern terminus at Orlando International Airport. The line has future stops planned that include Cocoa, near Port Canaveral.

The deal between the train and cruise companies aims to offer passengers hassle-free travel to the two port destinations that includes an optional express baggage checking service at $35 per bag that people can use so their luggage is checked at the train station and will make its way to their staterooms.

The deals include complimentary motorcoach travel from the Brightline station to the cruise port terminal to board the ships. The Orlando-to-Port Canaveral service will begin once Caribbean Princess begins sailing in November.

“A Princess cruise is already the best value in travel and this new partnership with Brightline makes it even easier and more enjoyable to sail with us from the top-rated ports in South and Central Florida,” said cruise line president John Padgett in a news release. “Our guests can just sit back, relax, and let us do the rest, including delivering their luggage directly to their stateroom.”

The partnership also offers discounts of up to 15% on packages booked through the Brightline website. For those who book through May 5, an extra credit for up to $150 per person for certain packages is available.

The Princess theme design adorns four cars that include the Princess “seawitch” logo and depictions of popular ports of call. Princess branding will also be on display at Brightline terminals.

“Brightline has been connecting travelers to South Florida ports since we began operations in 2018 and cruisers from the beginning have found our train to be the easiest way to start their vacation,” said Brightline President Patrick Goddard in the release. “Today’s partnership with Princess Cruises and this train wrap with the iconic Love Boat branding is yet another example of the connection between cruisers and Brightline.

Princess Cruises

A ship with some fine statistics.

Regal Princess, the flagship of the Princess Cruises fleet, was built in the Monfalcone shipyard and delivered in 2014. She has consolidated Fincantieri’s leading position as the constructor of the largest passenger ships in the history of Italian shipbuilding.

Well suited to every type of cruise

Regal Princess is the 32nd cruise ship built at the Monfalcone yard and the 14th for the Princess Cruises brand alone. At 142,000 grt, 330 meters in length and 38+ in the beam, the new unit is the largest vessel that Fincantieri has ever built, along with her twin, Royal Princess, delivered in 2013 from Monfalcone again. Both are among the world’s top ten cruise ships by size.

The Regal belongs to a forward-looking prototype class of ships. Her defining characteristic is her new future-proof design approach: she is innovative not only for her layout and advanced performance but also because she is fully compliant with all the latest regulations for large cruise ships.

Key features of this trend are the rational use of space, to avoid any wasted tonnage and thus reduce operating costs, and energy-efficient design to cut emissions into the air and water. The ship can be adapted to any kind of cruise, from Alaska to Australia, even in areas with sailing restrictions to protect the environment.
