Gig Review: Professor Green at Rock City

We review the opening night of Professor Green's ten year anniversary tour for his career defining album  At Your Inconvenience ...

I turned up at Rock City on Saturday evening to see Professor Green but first the obligatory support band, usually an act that just fills the time before the main artist delivers the real entertainment, BUT... this was very different!

I'd never seen Monster Florence live before and this was an awesome surprise. They are a six-piece band with drums, bass and guitar (with the bassist and guitarist doubling up on synths) plus three vocalists delivering an airtight performance.

They played tracks from their new album Master System and they created a storm with the crowd. I know this is a review mainly on Professor Green but please, please check out these guys. With hypnotic beats from a flawless drummer and bass, guitar and synths locking in smoothly to allow vocalists Dream Mclean, Wallace Rice and Alex Osiris to harmonise, contrast and battle it out up front.

Could the evening get any better? Well, yes it could actually, and it did! The Prof, aka Stephen Manderson, walked on stage with a sea of mobile phones trying to capture the occasion. This was a moment for the rapper to soak in all the love and affection from the audience and at times he looked genuinely humbled. A packed house decided to let him know how much they wanted to party, and he did not disappoint.

It was the start of a tour that was originally booked to happen in 2022 and to celebrate ten years since the release of his career defining album  At Your Inconvenience. Fans had waited for far too long and they made up for that lost time. Bass lines shook the room and Professor Green spat out the lyrics to his anthem  Don't Piss Me Off,  with every man, woman and beast in the room singing along.

He gave a mix of classics and newer tracks including some belters from the  At Your Inconvenience  album. I even saw someone crying when he sang Astronaut ! This was an emotional evening for both Professor Green and his fans. As the energy seemed to be at a maximum ten out of ten, the multi-talented rapper stepped it up to an eleven when he introduced Monster Florence singer Dream Mclean onto the stage to join him for a handful of songs.

Energy, energy, energy. It was at 101% and folks were breaking into dancing all around me as the partying became harder. I'm not sure how the rest of Professor Green's tour will go, but it started in Nottingham, and we set the bar high at Rock City on this night.

Professor Green announces tour and releases new single ‘Matters Of The Heart’

The Prof returns after breaking his neck

Professor Green; tour

Professor Green has announced details of a new UK tour and has released new single ‘Matters Of The Heart’ – which you can listen to below.

‘Matters Of The Heart’ was produced by Eddie Jenkins and Everyone You Know, and is the first track taken from Green’s upcoming EP ‘M.O.T.H’, which is set for release in September.

The song follows on from last year’s ‘Photographs’ which featured RagnBone Man and saw Green call on the UK government to have a ‘National Grief Awareness Day’.

The release comes just months after Green fractured his neck following a seizure . The London rapper, real name Stephen Manderson, was due to start a UK tour in Cardiff in February, but was forced to cancel all of his scheduled live dates following the injury.

Now, Professor Green will tour the UK this November in support of his ‘M.O.T.H’ EP. Tickets will go on sale at 10am on August 2 with pre-sales available on July 31, also from 10 am. You can see the full list of dates below.

Last year, Green launched a petition for the British Government to recognise ‘National Grief Awareness Day’. In the petition to Tory MP Matthew Hancock, then Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, the rapper noted that a similar day already exists in the US.

Recommended

Speaking at the time, Green said : “I’ve been speaking a lot about grief lately – the grief of losing my dad and my nan. The thing about grieving is, it never stops. It’s something you learn is part of life once you’ve encountered death.”

He continued: “I find it hard to believe we have had no other way of connecting our experiences of grief, no day on which we can celebrate the lives of those we mourn to remind us it’s okay to grieve, to stop us internalising our grief and sweeping it under the carpet until it manifests in a far more ugly way.”

Professor Green: Growing Up in Public review – slightly edgy pop

P rofessor Green hasn’t had the best of times recently. This album was pushed back after an annus horribilis that saw him get hit by a car and postpone his tour for the second time in six months. But that turbulence has coincided with a period of maturing; he’s married now and recently penned a moving comment piece about his father’s suicide for this newspaper. Growing Up in Public certainly feels like Green addressing tha t transition. Lullaby, for example, is a slightly overwrought heart-on-sleeve moment– backed by Tori Kelly – concerning his battles with depression. It’s not all weighty laments, though.

The album is powered by the kind of poppy drum’n’bass that pays the bills for Rudimental (Can’t Dance Without You, In the Shadow of the Sun) and snarling, guitar-led hip-pop that owes a huge debt to Mike Skinner’s more playful moments. He also throws some digs at the Script singer Danny O’Donoghue (“Danny O’Donowhat?”) and an angry Robbie Williams voicemail features at the end of I Need Church - apparently prompted by Green’s jibes over Rudebox. The fact that he is taking the time to call out over-the-hill pop acts shows a self-awareness that he didn’t possess in 2011, when he claimed he was “the antidote” to the influx of once underground British rappers who’d been lured by pop pounds. Now he seems happy to occupy that space and fulfil a role as a slightly edgy pop bloke.

Some 300 musicians, from Diplo to Nile Rodgers, lobby Congress for ticketing reform

From left, Nile Rodgers, Chappell Roan and Diplo are among the more than 280 musicians who signed a letter to senators in support of concert ticketing reforms.

What do Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews and Diplo have in common?

As of Thursday, they are among the more than 280 popular musicians who have signed a letter urging lawmakers to help reform the concert ticketing system.

Other prominent signatories include Becky G, Duran Duran, Fall Out Boy, Finneas, Graham Nash, Green Day, Nile Rodgers, ODESZA, Chappell Roan, Cyndi Lauper, Indigo Girls, Jason Mraz, Sia, Sylvan Esso and Lorde.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price," the letter reads.

Live Nation and Ticketmaster tell Biden they're going to show fees upfront

Live Nation and Ticketmaster tell Biden they're going to show fees upfront

It goes on to say that the use of illegal bots, speculative ticket listings and deceitful advertising causes "real harm," including severing the relationship between artists and fans — "which forms the backbone of the entire music industry" — and allowing resellers to profit more than the artists themselves.

The artists are asking the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to help fix those problems by supporting the Fans First Act , which was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators last December. It was referred to and remains before the committee, which would need to approve it to bring it to a floor vote.

"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers' deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices," the letter continues. "Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who along with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement Thursday that she will "keep working to pass this legislation."

"Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," Klobuchar said. "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists. That's why our bipartisan legislation to improve the ticketing experience has growing support, including hundreds of major musicians."

The Fans First Act focuses on three priorities : ticket sales transparency, consumer protection and stopping bad actors.

Senators are calling on the Justice Department to look into Ticketmaster's practices

Senators are calling on the Justice Department to look into Ticketmaster's practices

It would require live event ticket sellers and resellers to disclose more information about ticket costs and seat location, refund customers the full ticket price when events are canceled and create a reporting website for fans to file complaints.

"Even better, it backs all these regulations up with clear penalties and enforcement," the letter says.

The letter was organized by Fix the Tix , a coalition of over two dozen live event industry organizations led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).

Since its formation in the fall of 2023, it has called on Congress to enact legislation that would protect fans from price gouging, ban fake tickets and ticket-buying bots, end fraudulent resale practices and ensure price transparency, among other reforms.

So how did this letter come together, and why now?

NIVA Executive Director Stephen Parker told NPR over email that industry groups representing artists — such as the Recording Academy and Music Managers Forum - U.S. — are a "critical part" of Fix the Tix's efforts.

"Artists engaged in those organizations heard about our efforts and volunteered to lend their voice to getting comprehensive ticketing reform passed," he said. "The letter is being sent now because time is running out in this Congress for the Senate and House to meaningfully address the predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers that plague fans and artists."

Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, have come under increased scrutiny from artists and fans in recent years who accuse the companies of maintaining a monopoly over the industry ever since their controversial 2010 merger. Live Nation has repeatedly denied the allegations.

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

In particular, Ticketmaster's chaotic sale of Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets in November 2022 left scores of fans empty-handed and outraged. Several state attorneys general launched investigations, a group of Swifties sued the companies for fraud and the Senate grilled Live Nation executives at a January 2023 hearing.

Lawmakers have since introduced several aptly-named bills to reform various aspects of the industry, like the TICKET Act and the BOSS and SWIFT Act .

For its part, Live Nation expressed support for the Fans First Act when it was first introduced in the Senate in December.

"We believe it's critical Congress acts to protect fans and artists from predatory resale practices, and have long supported a federal all-in pricing mandate, banning speculative ticketing and deceptive websites, as well as other measures," it said in a statement shared with NPR.

The Justice Department is said to be ramping up its antitrust probe into Live Nation, with unnamed sources telling the Wall Street Journal and Axios in recent weeks that the agency could file a lawsuit as soon as May.
