Reddit Is The Ultimate Travel Guide: How To Use It To Plan Your Next Trip

Brittany Levine Beckman

When my husband and I started planning a Hawaii vacation, we sat on the couch, laptops at the ready, our fingertips tap-dancing across our keyboards. We both knew exactly where to start: Reddit.

We divided and conquered. He scoured for dive sites and shops to check out. I looked for what else we should do when we weren't floating under the deep blue sea. That's how I discovered a farm that lets you milk a goat and an app that narrates your drive through a winding road known for beautiful views, but a treacherous climb.

Reddit lets you take travel planning a step further than most guidebooks, introducing you to locals or past visitors who will appraise your itinerary, offer unexpected suggestions, and provide up-to-date information. You can dig deep into specifics and learn whether to hike a certain trail in the rain, buy a certain SIM card at the airport, or avoid a bus line that doesn't work in the afternoons.

But you have to enjoy the hunt — and play by a few rules.

How to begin

Before you start asking people to share hidden gems in Paris or debate whether you should travel to New York or Portland for a long weekend, lurk a little. Check out the local subreddit of the place you want to go; there are often also tourism subreddits for specific locales. (For the uninitiated, subreddits are Reddit's topic-specific forums.)

My first stops for my Hawaii planning were subs focused on Maui and Hawaii visitors . I also searched "maui to do," "maui tips," and "maui hiking" from the search bar on Reddit's homepage. Reddit search leaves a lot to be desired, but it'll do if you have the patience to scroll for awhile. You may have better luck using Google to do a site search for Reddit and specific keywords.

Once you've done a bit of homework, go ahead and write your first post. But make sure to be specific. A big faux pas on travel-related posts is being too vague, said Lili Armstrong, a subreddit moderator. She's seen people post questions about what they should do in Asia with no details about which countries they were interested in, their budget, or their hobbies.

"For me, I really love museums, and if I say 'Hey, I'm going to be going to this city, what are some great museums?' There's gonna be someone else out there who loves museums, and because you gave that insight, they're gonna give you a very detailed post that you wouldn't have gotten if you hadn't said that," said the 33-year-old from Colorado.

And yes, travel-loving Redditors will write thorough responses. When Armstrong was planning a trip to Egypt, she posted a handful of questions to Reddit and received more than 30 detailed responses, from suggestions about what to do to cultural guidance. Before a recent weekend trip to Los Angeles, she shared where she was planning to stay and was warned that the traffic would be horrendous there so she picked another neighborhood.

She also looks at local subs for posts about weekly events like concerts, craft fairs, or farmer's markets.

A helpful supplement

Reddit can also supplement your other research. Faye Boyer, a 22-year-old from Georgia, likes to check out TripAdvisor and Expedia to find inexpensive places to stay, but she's skeptical of their rating and review systems. Once she finds somewhere she thinks may work, she'll write a post in a local sub asking if people have been there before or know anything about it.

"I don't normally trust those websites because if you see they have 4.2 stars, how many of those are actually authentic? How many of those are people who stayed there or employees who were told to write a good review," she explained.

A few years ago, Boyer was planning a trip to Ireland with her mother, and they were considering staying at a carriage house they'd found online. But the inn had very few reviews on other travel sites. When she asked Redditors if anyone had visited it before, she got enthusiastic responses.

"Everybody's like, 'yes, it's great, it's awesome,' and we went and stayed there and it really was," she said.

"One of the things I asked is: I would be a single female alone in a foreign country, how do I do this safely?"

Boyer is currently planning a return trip to Ireland, but this time she'll be traveling solo. She again went to Reddit and asked what route she should take, which hostels she should avoid, and how she could get around. She's also found the Ireland sub helpful for posting her itineraries so others can comment on whether they're overly ambitious or fill in any gaps.

"I was looking to see if anybody who's in Ireland could push me in a certain direction, so I knew I would get some of the best advice there. One of the things I asked is: I would be a single female alone in a foreign country, how do I do this safely? Is hitchhiking an option, is a bus an option? Everyone was like do not hitchhike."

While Armstrong, who also runs a travel blog , had tried using TripAdvisor forums, she found they weren't as active as Reddit. In addition to Reddit, the voracious planner also reads travel books and blogs.

I'm the same way. I tend to read about places to visit on a blog or news site and then search for specifics on Reddit. For example, I learned about that winding road I mentioned earlier, the Road to Hana, on another site, but it was on Reddit where I read about honking when rounding curves, where to get coconut ice cream along the way, and that we should download an app to narrate our journey.

A few years ago, I traveled to Iceland with my husband. We bought a Lonely Planet book but also turned to Reddit for advice. That's how we found a post listing free hot springs. At one of them, which was about a 10-minute walk off the road and near a glistening river, we were the only ones. Someone had also linked to a map they made of their trip around the country, which we downloaded through Maps.me to use offline during our weeklong road trip.

Giving back

Many travel junkies — I'm one of them — will shower anyone who'll listen with a stream of recommendations. Reddit's like that, but to the nth degree. Travel-related and location-related subs are filled with people who want to learn and share their experiences. You can lurk on Reddit, but you're expected to join in, too.

When Boyer saw someone seeking advice on where to ask their girlfriend to marry them while visiting Ireland, she jumped at the chance to suggest some of her favorite vistas, parks, and gardens, adding photos and weather information.

"People are very generous," she said. "If you ask a genuine question, they’re not gonna beat you down for it."

"Our communities really want to help you."

While most respondents are helpful, this is the internet, and every now and then someone may be snarky or trolly. Ignore it and don't take it personally. For every irksome poster, there are plenty more who actually want to help.

Reddit's travel troves aren't just for extremely-online millennials, either. Many of the regulars in the sub Armstrong moderates are older than her, and love to needle her for it. While a separate solo travel sub skews younger, she's also seen people ask about traveling on their own in their 50s and 60s and whether they could still stay at a hostel in their 40s. To which, she opined, of course you can.

If you savor spending hours panning for travel gold — and are comfortable talking to faceless strangers, then add Reddit to your vacation research repertoire. As Armstrong said, "our communities really want to help you."

The best travel hacks on Reddit

reddit travel advice

Reddit is home to just about every type of content available on the Internet. It’s where nunchuck videos, cat photos, celebrity Q&As and conspiracy theories come together in online harmony. No topic is too broad or too niche.

For that reason — and that the platform has about 330 million monthly users — it’s become an interesting intersection of travel tips and ideas. We combed through Reddit’s travel “subreddits” (think sections, if you’re not familiar with the site) to find the most useful hacks for your next trip.

How to take care of your skin on a flight

You’d die before you could research every skin-care product available out there for travelers. This thread in r/AsianBeauty breaks down users’ thoughts on the best masks, moisturizers, balms and gels to use while traveling. For example, a flight attendant notes that you don’t have to pare down your routine just because you’re traveling by plane. Instead, decant or de-pot your products into smaller, TSA-approved containers.

Make sure you’re mindful about your beauty routine onboard and consider your seat neighbor. Some Redditors recommend various face mists to use in-flight, but make sure you use them in the lavatory only so you don’t spritz those around you.

How to pick the best travel pants

Not all of the clothes in your wardrobe are good for the road. Instead of spending hours Googling “good travel pants,” check out the crowdsourced answer in r/OneBag , a subreddit devoted to “the art of minimalist packing.” There’s a handful of options, plus arguments to back up those opinions, to find the best-performing pants on the road. Criteria for judgment includes number of pockets, material and durability. Favorites include the ABC Pant Classic from Lululemon for men and the Willary C-Fit Core Pants for women.

As with any online shopping, what works for some people and body types won’t look the same for you. Try ordering a couple options and trying them on well before your trip.

How to blend in when abroad

If you’re trying to fit in outside of the country, there are certain details that will give away your tourist status immediately. Some of those hallmarks are obvious (like a big foldout map or a selfie stick), and some are more subtle. In an r/AskReddit thread, a user asks: “Non-USA Redditors, besides accents, what is a dead giveaway that a tourist is American?”

There’s nothing wrong with being yourself when you travel, but it can be enlightening to learn what others notice about you because of your culture. One easy tell for foreigners is when American travelers ask about directions in terms of miles — not used in the metric system. Other signals included asking for ice in your drink, naming your home city or state rather than country when asked where you’re from, wearing a baseball cap and speaking at a loud volume.

How to tell if you were in the wrong to deny a family your empty row on a plane

There’s a corner of Reddit devoted to giving users “a place to finally find out if you were wrong in an argument that’s been bothering you.” For Redditor aboveaveragek, the argument in question took place on a red-eye flight across the country. The Redditor had paid extra to book an exit row that appeared to be empty so that he could lie on the seats and get some sleep before landing and going straight to a meeting. Come boarding time, a mother and her two young children were sitting in the Redditor’s exit row and asked him to take her aisle seat instead. “Here’s the thing: if circumstances were different, I would have!” the Redditor wrote. “But I explained that I had a meeting at 8:30 and paid extra for that ticket so that I could sleep.” The mother dismissed the Redditor’s request until a flight attendant stepped in and explained that children couldn’t sit in the exit row in the first place.

Was the Redditor in the wrong to deny the family in the first place? According to the most popular answer (with more than 23,000 “likes” to back it up), you’re allowed to hold on to the seat you paid for, even if that means a family can’t sit together.

How to ditch an itinerary and discover a city

How to know if the stuff in your suitcase is too weird

A post in r/AskReddit prompted users to share the weirdest things anyone had seen or personally packed in their luggage for a flight. It turns out, people are traveling with extremely weird things in tow, including: a chicken preserved by taxidermy, a glove full of about 1,000 pennies, human remains, live spiders, homemade sex toys, amethyst sex toys, metal sex toys, vibrating sex toys, lawn gnomes, a goat skull, a human skull, a whole dead carp, an entire frozen beef brisket, “fake butts mounted on wood,” every kind of knife, and dumbbells. If you’re not sure whether something in your carry-on bag is going to get through security, check out TSA’s What Can I Bring website or tweet them about the object in question @ AskTSA .

How to pick a credit card with travel benefits

Credit cards and their potential benefits operate in an intricate world. Reddit has a bunch of corners discussing every aspect of the credit card universe to help you get the most out of the system. For starters, there’s a breakdown of miles vs. points to clear up that confusion. A next-level credit card subreddit is r/churning , where an active community of people discuss ways to profit from sign-up offers. They host daily and weekly digital meetups to discuss pros, cons, gleaned wisdom and painful lessons learned. Once you’ve found the right credit card for you there, find out how to use your points on r /awardtravel .

Reddit is an online community platform that happens to be a goldmine for travel advice, particularly when it comes to hacks and packing. After landing on a subreddit (the name for an individual topic forum) when researching a story, I often find myself checking back for more great ideas. Here are some of the best packing tips I’ve found while researching on Reddit.

Carry-on and Personal Item Size Limits for 32 Airlines

Packing Tip #1: Dry Bags Can Do It All

reddit travel advice

“Always carry a dry bag ~20L to do laundry on the road, as detailed  here . Throw in clothes, add detergent (or a spoonful of dishwashing liquid), and shake or let soak for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Wring clothes out with a towel to speed up drying. This is the easiest way to wash clothes on the road – hotel, hostel, or wherever – without hogging an entire sink. Plus, the dry bag comes in handy for adventures and protecting your laptop in storms.” – ABrotherAbroad

How to Do Laundry on Vacation

Packing Tip #2: Migrate to One Cable

“All in all, I went from seven different charging cables (or battery) to  just a single one.  All devices are at least an upgrade from the previous one, with some offering a  major  upgrade. The devices include:

  • Action Camera
  • Mirrorless Camera
  • Bluetooth Earphones
  • Portable Battery
  • Portable Storage
  • Bluetooth Keyboard
  • Bluetooth Mouse
  • Wireless Charger
  • Travel Adapter
  • Flashlight/Headlamp
  • Electric Razor/Beard Trimmer

13 devices  that make use [of] the same type of cable

I can charge all devices from a single power adapter that offers three USB-A outputs and 1 USB-C output but it never happens – at worst I have to charge two at the same time as most devices have a fast charge.” – MarcusForrest

Packing Tip #3: Pack Like You Can’t Buy Anything for 24hrs

“What would you want/need? Personally, I’ve lost track of the number of endless bus rides, delayed flights, power outages, and rental car breakdowns I’ve had to deal with. I wouldn’t carry a huge first aid kit, but I would absolutely carry a mini-bottle of Advil and a roll of antacids. I carry a Vapur bottle that I fill and use all the time. I usually have a Cliff bar in my bag somewhere.” – Hakote

Packing Tip #4: Fabrics Are Your Friends

“Always pack at least one quick-dry outfit. Ideally, pack ALL quick-dry items. Nothing you take should require more than 12 hours to dry.” – Hakote

“In my opinion, the combination of merino and bamboo is really nice. Makes the merino stronger, softer and airy. I tend to sweat in it less and just like the feel. My favorite shirt of last year was a Pally’Hi with 60 percent merino and 40 percent bamboo. There is a discussion going on that the bamboo origin doesn’t really matter since it is merely the source for the cellulose to create viscose (meaning things that are often called modal or bamboo are simply viscose) but there is a difference in the way the fibers are treated after spinning. Which means that with a better-quality viscose you get a stronger and lighter fiber.” – ormagon_89

“Invest in at least one item of merino wool. T-shirt, socks, underwear, or button-up shirt. Merino is a game-changer for packing light. They are wrinkle-resistant, and don’t smell after wearing it multiple days.” – GeoffMeetsWorld

Packing Tip #5: Make a Decoy Wallet

reddit travel advice

“I always pack a fancy looking wallet with a 20 Euro bill and old credit cards. If somebody mugs me that’s what I give them.” – inthenameofmine

Packing Tip #6: Have a Travel Drawer at Home

“I travel enough for work and often with so little notice that I have a ‘Travel Drawer’, with my pre-packed toiletry bag, a pouch with charging cables and other handy stuff, and a packing cube with leggings, a t-shirt, and some socks and underwear in it. I basically corralled that stuff together because on a couple of occasions I had to ask my boyfriend to grab my stuff and meet me at work or the airport, and it was easier to say ‘grab the stuff from the travel drawer’ than to give him a full packing list … Eventually, I added a document folder to that drawer with my passport, social security card, some cash, and other stuff.” – Hakote

Packing Tip #7: Swap Your Liquid Toiletries for Bars

reddit travel advice

“I use the Neogen green-tea face stick when I travel as a joint face/body wash. It comes in a tube-like a large stick of lip balm, it’s easy to use with or without a washrag, and it lasts forever. It’s also very affordable and doesn’t count as a liquid for TSA purposes. I use one in my gym bag as well.” – violtetviceroy

“I just bought my first Lush shampoo bar and love it, but plan [on] buying a bar of dr. Bronner’s for my body. I personally love the tea tree one, and both bars will fit in my stainless-steel soapbox.  Someone else mentioned their soap turning to mush; I don’t store my soap in the shower and keep the box on the outside edge so water doesn’t get in it, or place it outside of the watered-down area right after using it and it stays together fine.” –bohemianmarie

Packing Tip #8: Rolling vs. Folding

“Folding lacks organization unless I put them in packing cubes. Ranger roll is too finicky and doesn’t save me any space. The bundle method is ok for wrinkles but is a pain for getting individual items out. It would work better for me in situations where I stay in one place for longer periods of time, I.e. long enough to unpack and live out of a dresser/closet instead of my suitcase. I think my new go-to might be a combination of rolling with rubber bands or hair ties and packing cubes or clear bags.” – katmndoo

The Best Packing Cubes Ever

Packing Tip #9: The One Item That Surprised Even Us … The Linen Towel

reddit travel advice

“As for linen itself, I greatly prefer my towels to both cotton and also to the microfiber camping towel I used before my linen towel. It’s not as soft as a plush cotton towel but it dries me well, dries itself quickly, and folds down much smaller. Linen is also supposed to be much more durable than cotton although I can’t say I ever wore out a cotton towel.” – chackoc

How to Pack a Suitcase: The Ultimate Guide

“Basically, this thing folds up so thin, doesn’t take much space, and most importantly dries up quickly (ie. no bad smell). I tried the microfiber quick-dry towel, and they were not quick-drying, especially in humid weather. They also smell really horrible if not dried properly, and I could never get used to the grippiness of the towel. The only drawback I say for the linen towel is the price and that you have to get used to the roughness initially. After a few uses, the roughness will be gone and it will become smooth.” – polarium

Seasoned travelers pick up their own arsenal of tricks to ensure their travels are smooth and easy. From a packing hack that saves space in your luggage or a mobile app that helps cut down on time in the airport, there's a number of unique tips that can help you have a fantastic trip. Whether you're an experienced traveler or are embarking on your first vacation in a while, here are 25 travel tips that will make your vacation stress-free.

Print Out Important Documents

Person sitting on hill taking a photo on their phone of mountains

These days, it’s normal to rely on your phone for getting around. But when you travel, that dependence comes with a risk. Your phone battery might die, or, if you're traveling internationally or in a remote area, your cell signal may not be quite as strong as it is back home. If you're using maps on a phone or other device, take screenshots before you head out, in case you lose signal. But to fully secure yourself, go old school and print out a map. This also goes for your itineraries, schedules, reservations, or any other important information you may need.

Read the Local News

It's tempting to completely disconnect from the real world while you're on vacation. But you will want to keep up with the news, especially in the destinations you're visiting, so you can stay safe during an emergency. If you don't know the local language, consider downloading an app like OZZI , which tracks international alerts to keep travelers informed of developing threats.

It should come as no surprise that airplane travel is a dehydrating experience, but did you know that dehydration affects more than just your thirst levels and skin appearance? Dehydration can increase the effects of jet lag since the high altitude of the pressurized cabin lowers oxygen levels in the blood. This makes it even more difficult for your circadian rhythm to make the adjustment. Staying hydrated keeps the blood flowing at an even pace and smooths out the transition.

Bring a First Aid Kit

Pack a small first aid kit with the essentials — bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain medication, and antidiarrheals for easy access if you get hurt or fall ill on the road. If you’re traveling through villages or remote areas, these basic items won’t be readily available. And if you're in a city with higher tax rates, you might save money by purchasing these items at home.

Pack One Complete Outfit in Your Carry On

reddit travel advice

If you plan on checking your bags, then be sure to pack one complete outfit in your carry on in case your baggage is delayed. This way, you’ll have a spare set of clean clothing ready to go. Even if your bags make it safely, accidents can happen while in transit, and you'll have a nice clean shirt handy for any spills that may occur.

Back Up Critical Documents

Scan and store copies of your passport and identification cards in a cloud-based folder so they're accessible should they be stolen. Having copies on hand will significantly expedite the process of replacing your stolen documents. The same goes for itineraries and reservation information.

Bring Several Different Forms of Money

A man opening his wallet.

Not having access to money can put anyone in a bind so be sure to bring more than one form. Certain debit or credit cards may not work in the destination you’re visiting so you’ll want to bring a backup or two. Keep an emergency card somewhere other than your wallet and carry some local cash as well. Store bundles of cash in multiple places, including your carry-on, a checked bag, and somewhere on your person. That way, if you’re separated from your luggage, you won’t lose all your budgeted money.

Become a Loyalty Member

Frequent fliers should pick one airline and stick to it in order to accumulate points. Earning status with a particular airline yields results such as free upgrades. Similarly, earn points with a chosen hotel chain and you’re more likely to be upgraded to a venue’s best available room upon check-in.

Learn the Language

Pick up key phrases in the language of the country you’re about to visit. By learning how to thank someone or ask where the bathroom is in the local language, you show respect as a tourist. You don't need to be completely fluent, though. Bring along a translator app to help you navigate the more complicated requests.

Get Familiar with the State Department

reddit travel advice

Before stepping onto new land, do some research. You don't need to learn the entire history of your destination, but it helps to at least know some information in case of an emergency. A lot of what you're looking for is available through the U.S. State Department . Where is the nearest U.S. embassy? What phone number is used for emergency services? Are there any neighborhoods to avoid? Write down or save that information and keep it on you at all times while traveling. You should also register with the U.S. Embassy if you're traveling overseas using the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

Bring Travel Size Laundry Detergent

In order to avoid high laundry fees at hotels, carry a few travel size detergent packets so you have the option of doing your own laundry in the bathroom sink  of your hotel room. This works especially well if you just need a few more pairs of clean socks and underwear during your trip.

Keep an Emergency Card Accessible

Write down (ideally, laminated and also on your phone) a list of emergency contacts as well as any medical conditions, health issues, medications, or allergies you may have. Keep the printed copy with your ID in case of an emergency. It's also not a bad idea to look up the translation of any medical considerations ahead of time, in case you need to quickly convey information to a foreign official.

Beat Jet Lag

reddit travel advice

When the plane takes off, set your watch to your destination’s local time and stay awake until an appropriate bedtime. Similarly, when you arrive at your destination, refrain from taking a nap until the sun goes down in order to reset your internal sleep clock. If you're struggling to adjust to your new time zone, melatonin supplements can help .

Bring Ear Plugs

If you’re a budget backpacker roughing it in twenty-bed dorm hostels, there’s bound to be at least one snorer who will keep the room awake throughout the night. Bring ear plugs to ensure you catch some Z’s. We even found you an inexpensive pair with over 2,000 five-star reviews on Amazon.

Get TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

reddit travel advice

It requires extra leg work, but signing up for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry is one of the best ways to sail through security lines at the airport. TSA PreCheck is explicitly meant to speed up the airport security process. You'll need to apply online, then in person, and it costs you $85 for a five-year membership. Global Entry is a different program meant to make it easier and quicker to move through customs when re-entering the United States. This will cost you $100, which might sound like a lot, but there's a bonus: Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck. If you think you may fly internationally, it's generally worth the extra $15 for the extra convenience. Not only will you get through security faster, but you'll bypass the lengthy U.S. customs line when you return from that fabulous trip abroad.

Bring an External Phone Battery and Power Strip

Bring an external phone battery to keep your mobile charged especially if you rely on Google Maps to navigate new cities. It’ll also save you when your mobile shuts down just before you show your cab driver the address of your final destination. Another great tool to bring is a power strip is a tool, which will make you instant friends at a hostel or while waiting for your flight at the airport. When there’s only one available outlet but a dozen people needing to recharge, you’ll be an instant hero with a small power strip .

Use Recyclable Bags

reddit travel advice

For avid hostellers, pack your items in a tote bag instead of plastic bags. Aside from being more environmentally friendly, if you need to rummage through your backpack early in the morning or late at night, using a tote will save you from making lots of rustling noises that’s sure to wake your roommates.

Be Nice to Gate Agents

In the event that you miss your flight or there’s a delay, gate agents are likely the first people you turn to in order to be rebooked or rerouted. They handle numerous complaints filed by impatient travelers throughout the day, and understandably will not sympathize if you’re rude. Ask politely for help and you’re much more likely to receive a stay at a hotel or a seat on a reassigned flight.

Pre-download Entertainment

reddit travel advice

Don’t depend on free Wi-Fi to help stock your movie collection at the gate. Often times the network is too slow for downloading. Make sure you’ve got your favorite series and films ready to roll so you can block out the chaos around you. Same goes for non-digital entertainment. Don't wait to buy a book or magazine at a store in the airport. Not only will these be marked up with airport prices, but you'll risk running late or losing your seat at the gate.

Talk to the Locals

Locals are experts on the destination you’re visiting, so don’t be afraid to befriend some and ask for suggestions on what to do or where to eat. They often know better than the guide books on where to uncover hidden gems and get off the beaten path. You must first know the people to know the country.

On Rental Cars

reddit travel advice

Rent from an establishment a short cab ride away from the airport instead of picking up your vehicle directly at the airport to save up some serious cash. Airport rentals inflate their prices due to high demand and convenience, so search for a pick up location that’s just a few minutes down the road to save big, and be sure to book your car with a credit card that offers good rental car insurance.

Airport Currency Exchanges

Redditors recommend visiting a local bank or withdrawing money from an ATM instead of exchanging money at the currency exchange when you land at the airport, as it charges a hefty fee. If prompted at an ATM, always carry out the transaction in the local currency to avoid incurring unfavorable exchange rates set by the bank.

Don’t Check Bags

reddit travel advice

If you can, pack light and travel with a carry-on only. Not only does that prevent the airline from losing your luggage, but traveling with a carry-on also eliminates the need to wait for your bags at the carousel after a long flight. If you miss a connecting flight or wish to catch an earlier one, then you don’t have to worry about arriving to your destination without your checked luggage. With a carry-on, you’re able to deplane and hop into a cab for your accommodation without skipping a beat.

Act Like a Local

Not a tourist. Dive into the daily life of locals by visiting supermarkets when traveling internationally. In destinations where supermarkets are geared towards middle class shoppers, then opt to visit marketplaces. Though it sounds mundane, you get to observe and understand the popular local ingredients and common dishes of the destination you’re in.

Keep Records of Your Rides

reddit travel advice

Always double-check your Uber driver's name and license plate before getting inside of a vehicle. If you take a taxi, text or take a photo of the taxi ID number. These won't just keep you safe, they'll also come in handy if you leave something behind in the car.

15 Travel Hacks You Need For Your Next Trip

Updated on 5/24/2018 at 1:55 PM

reddit travel advice

The one travel hack nearly everyone agrees on? Avoid checking a bag at all costs! Sometimes you simply have to, but one of the most common tips from expert travelers is to bring your luggage on board in order to avoid lost or damaged baggage, baggage delays, and general travel nuisances. Reddit users from all over the world offered tips and hacks based on what they've learned through their own extensive travels, so read on and wise up before your next trip.

  • Make your baggage stand out with tape. "I put coloured tape on all the corners of my checked luggage. It makes identifying your luggage at the carousel so much easier. Duct tape sells lots of distinctive patterns, or painter's tape if you're cheap," said Reddit user imperfectchicken .
  • Always try to carry on your luggage instead of checking it! "Any time you can, travel with a carry-on only. Not only do airlines charge for your first checked bag fairly often now, but you also don't risk having your luggage lost. A lot of people won't travel with a carry-on because they think you can't bring enough liquids or essentials like contact solution and razors," says Reddit user emellee89 . "Anything like contact solution is considered medicated though so you can bring a large bottle and not have it count towards liquids. As far as razors, you can bring the ones where you can't remove the individual blade, so anything disposable or where the head is disposable is fine."
  • Have a copy of your passport and important documents. Photocopy or take a photo on your phone of your passport/other documents, or have images of them saved somewhere on the Cloud or Dropbox so that if you lose anything important, you'll have backup copies.
  • Have backup clothes in your carry-on if you check a bag. Pack a complete outfit in your carry-on. Delayed baggage is common and it's best to ensure you have backup clothes so you can at least wash them without having to hang around a hotel in a robe half of the day just to have some clean underwear. "Don't forget to ask the airline what they offer for delayed luggage compensation on the spot," says Reddit user Colonel-of-Truth . "You can usually get at least a first-class toiletry/travel kit (especially for international travel); if they already know your bag will be delayed at least overnight, you might be able to get reimbursed for the purchase of a change of clothes (obviously ask first, and keep your receipt. They should give you a claim form.)"
  • You can use your phone's GPS even if you don't have data. If you're traveling internationally, you may not have data or service, but there are ways to access your GPS/get directions even without WiFi or data. "GPS doesn't use cell towers to parse location; it uses satellites. No data required, bit of a battery hog though. I download terrain maps and use GPS sometimes when I'm out backpacking in the wilderness and need a quick fix on my position," says Redditor heartbeats . You can use Google Maps to do this, as well as CityMaps2Go app, Caltopo , and Maps.me .
  • Travel quickly in expensive places; take your time in cheaper ones. If you are traveling for an extended period of time to different places, consider spending more time in the less expensive areas so that you can see something new while saving on hotels, food, and activities.
  • Know how to get back to where you're staying at all times. "You always have to know how to get back to your hotel, hostel, etc. Make it your first priority or else you end up lost," says Reddit user phaylinsok . If you stray far from your home base, always keep the address on you in case you don't speak the language and need to ask for help by showing somewhere where you're trying to go. If the hotel has a card, take one and keep it with you!
  • Post your rough itinerary on r/travel before your trip. "Before you travel anywhere post a rough itinerary and ask for suggestions. You'll get awesome tips from people that have been there and might suggest some towns you might not have ever heard of. Obviously you'll get some people who have negative things to say but filter that out and do your own research and see what tips apply to you," said Reddit user mosdefinite09 .
  • Pack a backup compass. Don't always rely on technology to steer you in the right direction; technology can fail you. "I carry a $10 compass, thankful for it 10 times a day," says cosine5000 . It's always smart to have a contingency plan.
  • Know the weather before you go. Being unprepared for bad weather can make a great trip go wrong quickly. Make sure you know what temperatures to expect, and be prepared for whatever Mother Nature may throw at you while you're traveling so that you can soak up the sun (or shelter yourself from the rain) wherever you go.
  • Be flexible and keep an open mind. "When traveling, allow yourself to be flexible. Have general ideas of things you want to do and places you want to go to, but keep an open mind. You will meet people that will give you advice on places to go and things not to be missed, and from my experience, theses are always the best," said Reddit user AndreeAnneP .
  • Bring extra battery packs! . Bring backup portable battery chargers so that you can power up your devices no matter where you are/how long you've been away from an outlet.
  • Get your body on the time of the your destination. One of the best ways to avoid jet lag is to set your clock for the time of your destination and start to acclimate to that zone. "Once the plane takes off, set clocks to destination time. Try to stay awake until something like a normal bedtime at your destination (this will be easy or hard depending on direction of travel and the time you leave)," said Reddit user LaunchAllVipers .
  • Keep your essential medicines with you in your carry-on. "Pack up a small first-aid kit that includes pain meds, anti-diahhrial, laxatives, Benedryl, cold meds, Tums, sore throat treatment, bandages, disinfectant, and other things you'd want if you were sick and didn't have easy access to them. Always keep this in your bag," says mdowney .
  • Look at everything as an adventure. "Things will go wrong. Museums will be on strike, trains will break down, you'll forget to pack something you always bring. It is far better to look at these things as opportunities to change plans and do something different," says Redditor RioOnTheWestrnFront . "Going into every situation with that attitude makes a major difference in having a bad day and having a funny story to tell when you get home."

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

The mission statement for the /BuyItForLife subreddit is to “showcase high quality, durable, and practical products that can be bought once and used for life.” The community has garnered roughly two million members on Reddit since its creation in 2011 and brings people together to share reviews, recommendations, and advice on high-quality products that are intended to last, well, for life. Aside from its stellar recommendations, it’s inspired a mindset of investing in durable items that will not only help you save money in the long run but will also cut down on waste from the constant buying and rebuying that happens each season.

As a savvy shopper myself, I’ve quickly become a frequent reader, feeling genuine excitement as I scroll to see what other shoppers are obsessed with. And because it’s my goal to help travelers find the best gear out there, I curated a list of some of the most loved items right now in the Buy It For Life (BILF) group, complete with durable water bottles that have withstood being run over multiple times to a widely loved travel backpack to help make your next trip a breeze.

Merrell Women’s Moab 3 Hiking Boots

I wasn’t shocked to see Merrell come up in this group more than a few times, as the brand is my own favorite when it comes to high-quality, comfortable hiking boots — so when a member made a call inquiring about the best waterproof hiking boots , I knew my go-to pair would surely come up. Soon after, @ Fltdi commented that they “swear by Merrells” with another member @ lysdexia-ninja , double downing that they second that sentiment: “Like the other guy said, no shoe is BIFL, but mine have lived for far longer than I’d have expected given how I’ve treated them.” And fortunately for you, Amazon has pairs starting at $62 right now, including on-sale sizes for men, too .

Dickies Men’s Original 874 Work Pants

It’s hard to find a pair of pants that are truly able to withstand life-long use and wear, but the original Dickies work pants come pretty close. One Reddit member wrote , “These pants are ridiculously tough! I've worn my pair for years, they still look practically new.” And while a recurring issue among the group is that brands that were considered to be high-quality decades ago no longer have the same material standards today, that same buyer also shared, “I just bought a new pair and I'm astonished how familiar they are. The fabric feels exactly the same. I am astonished that they haven't skimped on the quality over the years like many other brands.”

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

There’s nothing better than relaxing by the fireplace in your rental cozied up to a great book, and this Travel + Leisure -approved eReader is among the best out there. Redditor (@ ka11away ) agrees, and has “had this Amazon Kindle Paperwhite for 10 years now — no issues, still supported, and works well.” Although that’s an earlier model, shoppers are still happy to report that the newer model is their favorite yet and that they feel that the “quality is better and feels more durable so I'm not worried about being super protective and I can just throw it in my bag.”

L.L. Bean Buckskin Chopper Mitts

After someone requested advice on the best winter gloves to help their freezing hands stay warm in the winter, Redditor @ Camelhairy chimed in that they “suffer from low blood pressure and have nerve damage to one finger on one hand due to a work accident,” and that they “recommend L.L. Bean leather over wool mittens… They are also long-lasting, mine are now well over 10 years old.” While they are on the pricier side, these gloves are the heavy-duty mitts that’ll serve you well for years (and years) to come.

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack

Because the Venn diagram between people who meticulously research the best products and those who love data is a circle, it only makes sense that a Redditor would compile data for the most popular backpacks referenced in the countless posts. In first place is the Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack, and @ Creator13 reaffirmed the data by sharing that “these [backpacks] feel indestructible. Aside from a couple scratches this [backpack] is gonna last. They also have very good availability of easily replaceable parts which helps.” Not only that, but @ jgenius07 was excited to see that their own Osprey backpack was listed as the number one pick, sharing that they’ve had it for seven years running now.

GCI Outdoor Rocker Camping Chair

It’s no shocker that Amazon's best-selling camping chair is also majorly loved by Redditors in the Buy It For Life subreddit. Buyer @ Vinegarfingers shared that they've had theirs for more than six years and say that between using it in the “sand, rain, and camping in the Pacific Northwest, they’ve held up really well.” Another shopper (@ kooshballcalculator ), also chimed in that this rocker is “the best one they have.” If you’re in the market for a camping chair that’s designed to last you seasons to come, you really can’t go wrong with this widely beloved one.

Hydro Flask Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Amid the great water bottle debate , some members of BIFL have crowned this Hydro Flask the winner thanks to @ Redhornactual's post in which they shared that their “Hydro Flask has been [run] over multiple times, flung out of work vehicles, dropped onto asphalt an unimaginable amount of times, and yet, here it is.” And, fortunately for shoppers, it's also on sale for $24 today.

Canada Goose Hybridge Lite Jacket

The Buy It For Life group has also answered a question that’s been on the minds of many travelers: Is Canada Goose BIFL ? @ st4rsh1ne quickly gushed how much they love their Canada Goose coat, writing that it’s their “fifth winter together and [the jacket] looks brand new. In college, I wore it on a 45-minute walk in pouring rain turned to ice, and I got home completely dry and warm. That was when I knew it was a completely worthwhile investment.” And they weren’t the only ones; @ shiddyfiddy shared that their “partner loves to lord it over everyone how she bought her Canada Goose before they got popular and she got hers for 80 bucks.” They continued to say, “Still looks great too and she's had it forever. 15 years maybe? The cuffs still look really good too, which I think is a really important point.” If you’re looking to invest, pro tip: GILT has an excellent supply of Canada Goose coats with major discounts.

Women's Torrentshell 3L Rain Jacket

A few months ago, one member shared a message with the group seeking general thoughts on Patagonia , and I audibly laughed when I read @ Malinny ’s response that they “always complain the problem with Patagonia is that their stuff lasts so long so I can't get any of the new styles. It’s one of the brands I don’t think much about being used because the quality is good.” Another buyer echoed that sentiment by stating that they are in their “top three most reliable outdoor clothing brands. Stuff lasts forever and is made well.” While you can’t go wrong with anything from the brand, we recommend this rain jacket that’ll become a year-round staple in your travel wardrobe.

What is an aftershock? This is what may follow the earthquake felt in NJ and NYC.

reddit travel advice

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled New Jersey and New York City residents on Friday morning, with reports of shaking furniture and floors. No major disruptions or damage have been reported in the area.

Experts told USA TODAY that earthquakes are common in this region, but usually happen at a lower magnitude. It's unlikely a larger quake will follow, but officials are warning of possible aftershocks.

Wondering what that means? We’re answering your questions about the behavior of earthquakes, including tips on how to stay safe.

What is an aftershock?

Aftershocks are small earthquakes that occur in the days, months or years in the general area following an earthquake. Aftershocks are minor readjustments made near the faults , or areas where stress occurs during the earthquake.

Aftershocks can occur in the thousands and can still be damaging or deadly. In earthquakes, the “mainshock” is the largest activity felt during an earthquake.

Seismologists primarily use Bath’s law, Gutenberg-Richter law and Omori’s law to describe the behavior of aftershocks.

  • Bath’s law says that aftershocks will typically be about 1.2 magnitude units smaller than the mainshock .
  • Omori’s law says the number of aftershocks will decrease as time passes, according to a seismology lab from the University of California, Berkeley.

Aftershocks are not to be confused with swarms , which are sequences of small earthquakes associated with geothermal activity with no identifiable mainshock.

What's the chance of an aftershock?

Any time there's an earthquake , one concern is that it was merely a foreshock to a bigger quake that's coming.

Globally, the probability one earthquake will be followed by a large earthquake within 3 days is somewhere just over 6%, according to USGS . That means whenever there's an earthquake, there's about a 94% chance that it wasn't a foreshock and there won't be any more quakes linked to it.

The numbers are a little different for California, which is very seismically active. There, about half of the biggest earthquakes were preceded by foreshocks, according to USGS. But that means half were not.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to know if any one quake is a foreshock.

What is a foreshock?

Foreshocks come before large earthquakes, in the same location. Sometimes a foreshock may be identified incorrectly as the mainshock until a larger one occurs after it.

Neither foreshocks nor aftershocks can be bigger than the mainshock.

Why does the Earth shake when there’s an earthquake?

Earthquakes are caused by a slip on a fault, which is a fracture zone between two blocks of rock. The tectonic plates move, but their edges remain in place until this slip, when the stress overcomes the friction that normally holds them there. This causes the rest of the block to move and causes waves of energy that travel through the earth’s crust. These seismic waves shake the earth as they move through it.

What to do during an earthquake:

Staying vigilant during an earthquake is important, especially when it comes to aftershocks that may cause damage after the mainshock. Here are tips from the California Geological Survey to keep in mind:

During an earthquake:

  • Indoors: Stay indoors and away from exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, fireplaces and appliances. Avoid elevators, windows and doorways.
  • Outdoors: Stay in the open if you’re outside, away from buildings, powerlines or other falling hazards.
  • Driving: Move the car out of traffic and stop, avoiding trees, light posts, signs and powerlines or anything that could fall, like bridges or underpasses.
  • Mountains: Watch out for potential landslides and get to high ground.
  • Crowded place: Avoid panicking and rushing, stay low and cover your head and neck with youtr arms

After an earthquake:

  • Listen to the radio for instructions, especially about aftershocks
  • Check for fire hazards and fire
  • Avoid driving to keep streets clear for emergency vehicles
  • Check for damage in your home and for structures that are about to fall
  • Share your location with family and friends
