I had the onglet and my wife had the duck confit. Asked for my onglet medium rare, but it was more medium plus. My wife's duck confit was just one leg and some potato slices. Both dishes were over 20 euro. The service was nice... and accommodating. More

Le Zinc is a cosy bistro with a nice ambience which was full of locals when we were there. We had dinner there two nights (the second night not quite as good as the first). The first night I had a special of magret de... canard with figs, which was delicious, and my husband had the duck confit, which was also very good. Both were huge portions, and came with very good potatoes and salad. The appetizer of goat cheese was also very good. The second night, I had the duck confit which was tender and tasty, but my husband was disappointed with his fish dish which he found lacking in flavour. Overall, though, the food was of excellent quality, and the 2 or 3-course menus were good value. More

Had lunch at Le Zinc when in Tours and our party of 6 really enjoyed both food and service. We were seated in the main room but they have also a terrace if you like the outdoors on the little square across...From beginning to end... the service was very good with great attention to details. The food itself (French cuisine) was excellent. We went with a mix of prix fixed menus and a la carte within our party and everything we had (foie gras, nems, salads, carpaccio of steak tartar, rumsteak, French fries, fish, etc,) including dessert and coffee was freshly made, tasty and well presented. The wine in pichet was excellent (tried the Chinon and Brouilly). Overall a very nice experience in Tours and a good value for the money. More

We ate here in the evening and the food was very good. The service was excellent. All in all a very nice little restaurant.

First course very good. Ordered steak for main I can honestly stay my worse meal over a 16 night stay in France and Spain. So much fat and gristle it was disgusting.

We ordered 3 course menu and they were all really delicious. I would suggest rice pudding as dessert.

Great French cuisine - a Lamb Tagine, French Style. Fresh & Locally Sourced Food - great wine list and staff with a great knowledge of the dishes and the ingredients

Very cosy type of restaurant nice wines and ground to earth type of food. I only took the main course from the recommendation list. Goose, goose liver, mashed potatoes and salad. It was very good. Maybe not the most healthy, but good. They have menus... in English, but only smile in English. Not fine dining but good food and nice service. More

This little restaurant was suggested to us by our hotel in Tours....and it, and they, didn't let us down! It IS tiny..typically French and our food choices were, indeed tasty! The service was excellent and the staff friendly and efficient! We LOVED our dining experience... here! I haven't given it 5 stars because we thought it was a little pricey....I think we were paying for it's location...ie. right at the edge of the old town! We would go back and we would recommend this restaurant! More

We had booked a table the night before and were exactly on time. We were given menus and then waited over twenty minutes before we were even asked what we wanted to drink. The service was not to the desirable level and the food was... not brilliant. More

We had high expectations with this restaurant. Most people were having the set course menus so we did the same...not so sure this was a great idea. I had the salad with goats cheese. Quite peppery/bitter salad mixture and strong cheese but nice. The terrine... was ok. For our mains I had the steamed fish sitting on grated vegetable in a basket.......Absolutely delicious!!! My husband had the confit Duck.it was very fatty as it was well fried but also had a large layer of duck fat on the meat . This was served with fried chips and a salad. He was very disappointed and was looking forward to more actual duck meat. We have mixed feelings about this place and it largely depends what you order. The staff were charming and the service quick. It's packed most nights by locals so that says something I guess. For us though we found a few other restaurants nearby that we preferred based on all 3 courses . More

four of us ate at this restaurant a few weeks ago and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I had scallops that were perfectly grilled and wonderful citron tarts for desert. We would highly recommend this restaurant.

We have enjoyed it very much. We came early and place has become full very quickly.

This restaurant was recommended to us by the staff of the hotel l'Adresse because a few others were closed because it was January. And we were not sorry at all we ended up here. If you are looking for a simple, little restaurant with traditional... food and good ingredients for a very reasonable price: this a the place to go! It is not a fancy place but it has a nice feel to it. The 2 ladies who were serving dinner were very efficient and friendly. They do not have a very elaborate menu but we had the fixed menu (about 20 euros for 3 courses) and were pleasantly surprised. I especially liked the "terrine de boudin"as a starter. My husband is a real "meat-eater"and was very pleased with his steak. The house-wine was very good, but I wouldn't expect otherwise in the Loire-valley! In short: this is the kind of restaurant we look for whenever we are in France. We spotted quit a few locals and that is always a good sign! More

Excellent dinner entrecôte with frites. I did not have dessert. But am sure it would be good You will enjoy coming when in Tours. Restaurant is located in Vieux Tours. Definitely recommend.

“Popular and interesting restaurant” Review of Le Zinc

Magret de canard with figs

This was the first out of 3 restaurants we visited in Tours. The menu was interesting with rustic sounding dishes including calves head and pigs trotter which were well cooked and tasty. Popular with locals and good value with good wine list. and helpful service. Recommended.

My girlfriend and I went to Le Zinc on a recommendation from the people we were staying with. You walk into the small restaurant on Place du Grand Marche and it is quite cosy, you are handed zinc menus with great traditional food listed within. Prices were between 15-30 Euros for mains. I had the entrecote, which was huge and had a tasty sauce to place on top. Really tasty! For two of us, 1 shared entree, 2 mains and a shared dessert came to around 60-70 euros, which also included a couple of glasses of wine. What an amazing hidden gem of a restaurant. Highly recommended. I don't think they have a website but you can email them at; [email protected]

The "Conftit the Canard" and the "Coq au Vin" are delicious. The price is fair and the wine list are very good.

We went to this restaurant and were surprised by the amazing food and the generous portions. It was a great meal at a reasonable price. The owner and the staff were very friendly and very helpful. The wine that she reccomended was amazing and exactly what we wanted. I would absolutely go back.

Carte de l'emplacement de l'établissement

Restaurant offering traditional French cuisine and fine wines.

Zinc is located in front of the Monster, on the lively Place du Grand-Marché, in the heart of the Old Towers. The decoration is in perfect harmony with the atmosphere of the district, with beams, large white stones and small lanterns to immerse you in a cosy atmosphere. The cuisine is traditional and French. We fall for beef tartare or entrecote and, for dessert, give in to the temptation of rice pudding with caramel and salted butter. As a romantic getaway or with friends, share a plate of deli meats and Italian cheeses with a wine that Nathalie will be able to recommend to you. For a long time, an unmissable bistro in the Old Towers.

Mediocre food in Tours, for Paris prices. Steamed fish with veggies was bland and smelled funky. Scallops were old and smelled so bad so we couldn't eat them so rejected the dish - restaurant charged for it anyway. Duck confit was the only decent dish, but nothing to write home about. Go elsewhere, plenty of good restaurants around. If it's the only place that can accommodate, realize that there's a reason for that, and get the duck. Then go elsewhere for dessert. Surprised this place is still open

Nice service and location, they put an hype on fresh produce for their meals and it tastes really like that.

Le Zinc: Where to Find the Classic Bars of Paris

Le Zinc: Where to Find the Classic Bars of Paris

Le zinc was the ubiquitous Paris neighborhood bar, earning its name from its galvanized zinc countertop, which, since the 1800s, was a standard feature of French bars and cafés. The term originally referred to the impervious zinc which covered the counter, later, the term le zinc referred to the restaurants themselves. “ Rendez-vous au zinc ” (or: “meet me at the café”) was a phrase once commonly heard. Zinc bars are an evocative symbol of the Belle Époque and early 20th-century Parisian life.

Apart from the Church, the zinc was a welcoming space for mixing and mingling, where strangers could meet up and interact over a coffee or a glass of cheap absinthe. Emile Zola wrote of le zinc in his 1873 book  The Belly of Paris thus, “In particular was the counter… that was so sumptuous, with its broad expanse of silver polished bright. The covering zinc overhung the red and white marble base with a deep wavy border, thus overlaying it with a silky sheen, a cloth of metal, like a high altar spread with its embroideries.”

Some of these bars were denuded of their metal during the Occupation of Paris by enemy forces who reused their metal in the Nazi war industries. Fortunately many survived and some fashionable contemporary bars looking for a historical ambiance are returning to the look, having brand-new zinc countertops fabricated.

Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway © Lloyd Arnold, Public Domain

Ernest Hemingway said in his Hemingway cadence,

“Outside it was getting light. I walked down the empty street to the café. There was a light in the window. I went in and stood at the zinc bar and an old man served me a glass of wine and a brioche. The brioche was yesterday’s. I dipped it in the wine and then drank a glass of coffee.”

George Augustus Sala in his 1878 memoir, Paris, Herself Again, describes how he witnessed:

“Two honest working men breakfasting on bread and grapes and a chopine of thin wine apiece – made up the company before the zinc-covered bar, behind which sat enthroned a stout lady with a kerchief of crimson cotton twisted round her head.”

Escargot , foie gras , and frog legs still seem to be the order of the day at the 21st-century zincs . Sure, you’ll find travelers or those looking to recreate a scene from French cinema, but these locales are popular with Parisians too.

For some, chalkboard menus, bentwood chairs and zinc bars exemplify what it means to be in Paris. For others, these details seem as irrelevant as some of the dusty mannequins at the Grevin . Old or new (and you can like both), the zinc bar runs counter to the more Japanese/Danish aesthetic that comprises much of the look of the “new Paris.”

restaurant tours le zinc

The cafés and bistros of Paris are an integral part of the city’s heritage and culture. The Musée Montmartre has preserved a zinc bar – albeit a small one – as an homage. In a city that boasts thousands of bistros, with each street, alley, and avenue in Paris having its own neighborhood bar, it seems strange that there needs to be an initiative to save the traditional Parisian bar, but café society is slowly eroding. Paris has lost over 400 cafés since 2014 and the numbers continue to diminish because of Covid-19. This is in detailed Caroline Harrap’s April 6, 2020 article Save the Paris Café published on the Taste of France website . There are more details about the initiative here .

Large restaurant chains will continue to snap up many small eateries, but money talks – spend your euros elsewhere. Resist the siren call of the familiar coffee and donuts chain located on your nearest corner and spend your money on something integral to the neighborhood, whether historical or hipster.

Here’s the A to Zinc of Paris.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Restaurant chez Allard (@allard_restaurant)

Located in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés , Allard is an authentic French bistro dating from 1932. It was founded by Marthe Allard, a Burgundian peasant who brought her family recipes with her to Paris. With Marthe’s culinary secrets in hand, the next generation of Allard women carried the business forward. Today Allard is helmed by chef Charlotte Bringant under the auspices of Alain Ducasse . The gastronomic level is a cut above and it shows on the menu. Allard is a small space, decorated like a comfy, old-style bistro where the mirrors behind the zinc bar expand the room. Music from 1930s further enhances the experience.

Bar du Central

The service and the quality of the food is reputedly excellent at Bar du Central. The warm and inviting resto serves both Monsieur and Madame Croques, charcuterie, Basque sardines, shrimp, duck and healthy bowls.

99 Rue Saint-Dominique, 7th

In the Faubourg Saint-Antoine district, Chardenoux is a zinc bar helmed by a Michelin-star-trained chef. It’s a swoon-worthy neo-bistro with the old touches. The sinuous zinc bar, the tiles on the floor and ceiling, etched glass, and bentwood chairs all seem to date from the Belle Époque – after all, the premises did open in 1908. It’s a beautiful place. The chef Cyril Lignac ’s small menu diverges from the usual pub grub. The famous langoustine ravioli, par exemple, is one of the most expensive entrees at 29€ – it’s doable. M. Lignac’s chocolaterie is across the road.

At a crossroads busy with cafés, Charlot holds its own. On the hip corner bordering the Upper Marais, Charlot has a cool vibe and the staff is friendly and welcoming. The appealing architecture includes a curved zinc bar. And the menu is pleasant and sustaining.

38 rue de Bretagne, 3rd

Le Chansonnier

Le Chansonnier  – The Singer – is a very nice brasserie named after the 19th-century socialist singer/songwriter Pierre Dupont. Found within is a small curved zinc bar and moldings circa 1918. Near Canal Saint Martin, Le Chansonnier is a family-owned restaurant that offers a wide range of fresh and homemade French cuisine. The menu ranges from country paté with onion jam to roast fish with ratatouille. The steak à cheval haché sounds horsey but it’s simply an egg riding horseback on a beef burger.

Cravan is on my bucket list. It’s a pretty and understated cocktail bar in an unexpected corner of the 16th arrondissement. It’s named after Arthur Cravan, a nephew of Oscar Wilde, who was a one-time poet, one-time boxer, who flew too close to the sun. “I can resist anything but temptation,” said his uncle and this little boite is very tempting indeed.

Café le Louis Philippe

The postcard-pretty Louis Philippe is the epitome of the real Paris zinc . It’s renowned as a local restaurant and as the adage goes, the food must be good. At this ever-so central café the old-fashioned décor dates from 1810. The covered terrace is a nice touch.

Les Marcheurs de Planète

This fun café varies their cuisine to the schedule of their farmer friends, and menu choices are artisanal and small-scale. They make favorite dishes that no one seems to have the patience to make at home like pot-au-feu , regional stews, coq au vin , poule-au-pot , bourguignons , and blanquettes . Clients also make a fuss about the omelets. There are an unfathomable 400 wines on the menu. This welcoming, walkable location is kind of funky too.

Le Bistrot du Peintre

Situated in the Bastille district, this bistrot is understandably decorated in the style of Art Nouveau – it first opened its doors in 1902! This zinc has had a makeover since then but they’ve kept its Art Nouveau elegance: from the lighting to the woodwork, mosaic floor, mirrors, and benches. The interior and the facade are even listed as historic monuments.

Returning to France after several years in New York, restaurateurs Mélodie and Antoine Goldschmid found a diamond in the rough in this gorgeous Les Halles location. From under decades of grime, they rescued beautiful, floor-to-ceiling walls of extraordinary Art Nouveau tiles dating back to 1906. The classic zinc bar was also salvaged as part of the refurbishments. The perfect neighborhood bistro, Poulette’s fresh look reflects its modern, market-based menu, bio-wines, and inventive cocktails.

Au P’tit Zinc

Au P’tit Zinc is popular with locals and travelers alike and it’s easy to see why. It’s old timey, cluttered artfully with advertising posters from the 1920s and 30s. P’tit Zinc is charming and vivacious; the offerings on the carte  delicious. Eric gives a face to the venue, and along with a warm welcome, offers good, authentic food at affordable prices.
