Rod Wave smiles and addresses the crowd.

On Friday, Sept. 15, Rod Wave dropped his sumptuous fifth studio album “Nostalgia.”

The record, which seesaws from slinky club bangers to soulful piano ballads — sometimes within the same song — shows that the 25-year-old rapper is fully in control of his craft.

And if you want to hear him perform his new tracks as well as singles from his number one albums “Soulfly” and “Beautiful Mind” live, you can make that happen in the very near future.

Rod Wave is embarking on his ‘Nostalgia Tour’ from Oct. 19 through Dec. 18 this year with special guests Ari Lennox, G. Herbo, Toosii and Eelmatic.

Tickets are available for all 35 concerts including his shows at Albany, NY’s MVP Arena on Nov. 7 Brooklyn, NY’s Barclays Center on Nov. 11.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on ‘Nostalgia Tour’ tickets was $59 before fees on Vivid Seats.

If that seems steep, make sure to bookmark this page and refresh often; prices may drop in the days leading up to the tour.

In the meantime, if you want to find out how much tickets cost for the show closest to you, keep reading.

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about Rod Wave’s 2023 ‘Nostalgia Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Rod Wave 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available for all Rod Wave concerts can be found here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Rod Wave new music

As noted above, Rod Wave just dropped his latest record “Nostalgia.”

The 18-track album features guest spots from 21 Savage, Wet and Sadie Jean.

More than anything though, “Nostalgia” is a showcase for Rod Wave’s falsetto and his impassioned, breathless rapping style.

For our money, the standout tracks are the sensual opener “Nostalgia,” the hard charging “Rap Beef” and the warbly album closer “2018.”

Want to hear the record for yourself?

You can listen to “Nostalgia” in its entirety here .

Rod Wave special guests

Each show on the ‘Nostalgia Tour’ will be a star-studded affair.

To get you up to speed, our team found each opening act’s most-streamed track on Spotify:

Ari Lennox: “Shea Butter Baby”

Toosii: “Favorite Song”

G. Herbo: “PTSD”

Eelmatic: “Melodies from Miami”

Hip-Hop and R&B stars on tour in 2023

These next few months are jam packed with amazing live music options.

Here are just five of our favorite tours we can’t wait to see in the very near future.

•  Playboi Carti

•  Doja Cat with Ice Spice

•  Earl Sweatshirt

Rod Wave | November 9

Rod Wave Announces Upcoming 2023 Tour Kicking Off This October - 35 Dates At Top Arenas Across North America

This fall, AG Entertainment Touring and Mammoth, Inc . proudly present the Rod Wave - Nostalgia Tour . This large-scale multi-city outing will feature Rod Wave headlining 35 of North America's top arenas coast-to-coast. The tour will stop at Wells Fargo Center on November 9 with supporting acts Ari Lennox, Toosii, G Herbo, and Eelmatic. The full itinerary is below with tickets on sale to the public Thursday, September 14 at 10:00am local time. For all information regarding the tour, please visit https://official-rodwave.com/ .

The Rod Wave – Nostalgia Tour celebrates the St. Petersburg native’s fourth studio album, Nostalgia, which will be released Friday, September 15. Nostalgia is the follow up to Rod’s chart-topping, platinum certified Beautiful Mind album, which was also the fourth consecutive platinum-certified project of his career. The three singles that have been released from this year’s album, including lead single “Fight The Feeling,” have already amassed close to 350M streams to-date.

About Rod Wave

Blessed with a special singing voice, and an uncanny gift for songwriting, Florida's Rod Wave is taking his own path to the top of the game. Coming through with a soulful set of Southern sing-raps, the St. Petersburg native has built a groundswell of regional support and blossomed into a national streaming phenomenon. After releasing 3 projects in a 12 month span – Hunger Games 3, PTSD, and the platinum-certified Ghetto Gospel – Rod first erupted onto the scene with the viral 3x-platinum “Heart On Ice." His debut album, Pray 4 Love, was certified platinum within a year of release, propelled by the TikTok crossover moment "Rags2Riches." He surpassed Pray 4 Love one year later with SoulFly, which became Rod’s first-ever #1 album on the Billboard charts. After embarking on his 35-date nationwide SoulFly tour in the fall, Rod released two massive singles, the platinum-certified "By Your Side" and the Hank Williams-sampling "Cold December." The two singles set the stage for his forthcoming third studio album, Beautiful Mind, which also debuted #1 on the Billboard charts. Rod is set to release his forthcoming 4th studio album, Nostalgia, this Fall. His most self-reflective work to date, Nostalgia cements Rod’s place as one of the pioneers of “pain music,” a fitting title to bestow on someone whose catalog has amassed over 15 billion streams to date.

The Rod Wave – Nostalgia Tour celebrates the St. Petersburg native’s fourth studio album, Nostalgia, which will be released Friday, Sept. 15.

Rod Wave Talks Going ‘From The Nosebleeds To The Franchise Player Of The Team With Three Rings’

It’s a crisp November night outside Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and inside, Rod Wave has a sold-out audience of 12,000 hanging on his every word. As the 25-year-old rapper-singer nears the end of performing “Come See Me,” one of several hits off his 2023 blockbuster, Nostalgia , he pauses and walks toward a ladder that’s part of his stage design. Screams of “Don’t do it, Rod!” commence. “You have so much to live for!” yells a teenage girl near me.

Trending on Billboard

Like everything Rod does, this wasn’t a stunt for clicks or social media fodder. It was much more profound than that: He has struggled in the past with depression and anxiety and has always been open about having had suicidal thoughts, especially in the song’s music video. “That was from a dream I had,” Rod explains of the stage fall days after the show. “When I come out, walk onstage and look at [the ladder], it’s really to show people, ‘Don’t get up and do that when you can do this. You don’t know where life can take you.’ I’m walking out to a whole arena full of people looking back up at me. Imagine [if] I would’ve [gone through with committing suicide]. I would’ve never made it to this part. There’s a whole meaning behind it — a bigger picture.”

Sexyy Red on Working With Nicki Minaj & How Drake’s ‘Rich Baby Daddy…

While many of today’s biggest hip-hop acts like Travis Scott and Playboi Carti thrive on mosh-pit anthems, Rod has stuck to his roots as an unabashed lover, using music to express his heartbreak and inner turmoil. His ability to hopscotch among genres has become his hallmark and the secret to his success, and he hit a new artistic apex on Nostalgia , which debuted with 137,000 equivalent album units in September, according to Luminate — a career best. Whether he’s contemplating his road to fame on “Long Journey” or reimagining himself as a tragic literary hero on the love-drunk “Great Gatsby,” Rod’s versatility is always evident.

“Rod pioneered this lane of struggle rap, which, given his age, is pretty incredible,” says Todd Moscowitz, CEO of Rod’s label, Alamo Records. “He’s one of the great songwriters of his generation and channels emotion and vulnerability in a unique way that people relate to. He has half of the NFL in tears on Instagram when he drops a single.”

Since Ghetto Gospel , Rod’s subsequent three albums — 2021’s SoulFly , 2022’s Beautiful Mind and Nostalgia — have topped the Billboard 200 , making him the third artist to nab at least three No. 1s on the chart since the start of 2021. The only others are Taylor Swift and Drake.

“Being compared to Taylor Swift, you can’t even wrap your head around that kind of sh-t,” Rod says. “I remember ninth grade, being on my school bus listening to ‘Blank Space.’ Being in these conversations, it don’t really hit you. I was just on the sidelines. Now I’m really in the game. I went from the nosebleeds to the franchise player of the team with three rings.”

Rod Wave’s first-ever performance was at a high school football teammate’s birthday party in 2015. At the time, the artist born Rodarius Green was a budding rapper from St. Petersburg, Fla., working at Krispy Kreme. He enjoyed listening to 2Pac, Kodak Black and Kanye West but also appreciated the soulful pop sensibilities of Adele and Ed Sheeran. That eclectic musical taste helped him find his voice — one that spoke to the harsh street realities he and his family survived.

While Rod enjoyed the camaraderie that came from working in the trenches with teammates, his true passion was music. A singer without any vocal training, he would showcase his talents between classes at Lakeview High School, the hallways becoming his stage. Yet the confidence Rod exuded when he belted for his peers disappeared when it came to actually recording his music and uploading it online — until his classmate and former producer, Elijah Simmons, took matters into his own hands, recording a video of him singing in the hallway one day and posting it on Facebook.

Though Rod feared rejection, to his surprise, the video caught the attention of one of his football teammates, who later asked him at practice to perform at his birthday party. At the time, Rod didn’t have a car and wasn’t getting paid to perform — but the thought of doing so for the first time in front of his classmates, especially the girls, was motivation enough. “I walked to that motherf–ker. I was 17,” Rod remembers, chuckling. “You don’t really know if your stuff is good enough at the time. I didn’t want to think that I was one of them people who think they raw. I was [wondering] like, ‘Am I really good?’ ”

Rod soon went from booking birthday parties to hole-in-the-wall Florida clubs, and his stock began to rise — so much so that fans would recognize him when pulling up to the Krispy Kreme drive-thru. Shyness usually got the best of him; he shrugged off questions about his rapping alter ego when he was on the clock. Balancing high school, a growing rap career and a part-time job was a lot for a teenager, and after his father, Rodney “Fatz” Green, saw the focused hunger in his son, he wanted to lend his support. Green and Rod’s uncle Derek Lane forged Hit House Entertainment — Rod’s own label — to help him realize his rap dreams. With Lane designated as management, they leaned on Rod as their franchise player.

Founded in 2016, Alamo wasn’t initially a first-class destination for rap powerhouses. That changed when it signed Lil Durk and Rod two years later. (As part of its deal with Rod, Alamo established a partnership with Hit House.) Before signing with Alamo, Durk had spent five years at Def Jam and was looking for a change of scenery to help elevate his career. Rod and Durk soon became the twin giants of Alamo, evolving into Billboard chart-toppers and streaming goliaths who quickly came to define hip-hop in a new decade.

“The other day, I had to text Durk, ‘I’ve been listening to you since middle school.’ I was able to DM him and [watch it] land. He was just like, ‘You hard, too!’ I was just like, ‘I been listening to you. I f–k with you. I rock with you,’ ” Rod says with a child-like smile. “When you in the moment and you meet people face-to-face, it slips my mind because I have to be Rod Wave. F–k all that. I’m a fan. I’ve been listening to your sh-t.”

Durk isn’t the only star who has left Rod awestruck. Drake and Sheeran have praised his accomplishments, especially the latter. On Beautiful Mind , Rod interpolated Sheeran’s “U.N.I.” from his debut album for his song “Alone.” The track caught the attention of Sheeran, who first met Rod after WPWR (Power 105.1) New York radio host Charlamagne Tha God learned of the rapper’s adoration for the pop giant.

“Ed’s a phenomenal guy. That’s one of my favorite artists. He’s just real people,” Rod says. “When you looking at it from a fan point of view, they don’t even feel like real people. It’s like you know them, but they’re like figures in your mind. They don’t even feel reachable.”

The pandemic tested Rod’s patience. He landed a coveted performance slot on NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts , but that paled in comparison with the venues he had been filling. Still, the thought of hitting the road and being with his fans again fueled him. Rod’s mission was clear: Get back on tour. But before he could do that, he had to fulfill a different calling: becoming a first-time father to his newborn twin girls.

“I [won’t] lie: [Fatherhood] made me softer. Back then, I could just move and feel nothing. Now I feel like they made me a little weaker,” he says while his kids hang out in the next room. “I can’t do that. I have to get home. I’ll be gone with my homeboys for three days or on the road for a week, and I’m just like, ‘We have to get a jet and fly the kids.’ ”

Instead of fatherhood being a hurdle, it motivated Rod, especially when touring resumed. In 2021, he came back stronger than ever, notching his first Billboard 200 No. 1 album with SoulFly and two top 20 Hot 100 hits in “Tombstone” and “Street Runner.” He realized his wish of returning to the road, but this time — with the help of powerhouse hip-hop festival promoter Rolling Loud, which in 2021 launched a national touring branch of its business with Rod as its first tour — he was playing amphitheaters, a step up from the clubs and theaters of his previous tour.

“We’ve witnessed his evolution from the start, and what sets him apart is his unwavering consistency,” Rolling Loud co-founder Matt Ziegler says. “His music consistently reaches a high standard, accompanied by impassioned performances that have become his trademark. As we observed his skyrocketing music consumption and the widespread acclaim for his shows, it inspired us to acquire his SoulFly tour, leading to the launch of our Rolling Loud Presents division.”

And Rod was already thinking bigger: He wanted arenas. Notching his second and third Billboard 200 No. 1s — Beautiful Mind in August 2022 and Nostalgia in September 2023 — helped him fulfill that dream. Seeing thousands of people of different ages and races singing his songs in a bonfire-like experience at his concerts excited Rod and his team. “His shows are like going to karaoke with 15,000 people,” Moscowitz says. “Everyone sings along and there’s a real sense of community.”

“What we figured out is where his core fans are and where they are going to support [him]. Then we’d mix the routing in to get to these places that make sense,” adds Beau Williams, Rod’s touring manager. “Even going through this, we found some diamonds in the rough in a lot of these cities that a lot of artists can’t go to the way he’s doing great numbers.” And with his zealous fans behind him, Rod’s goals continue to widen: His eyes are now set on stadium touring and Grammy Awards.

“This is the new chapter. People catching on slowly but surely,” Rod says. “That’s why I say in four or five years, we’ll probably be in stadiums selling 250,000 [tickets] the first week. That’s what I’m here for — Grammys and sh-t.”

Rod Wave’s “Nostalgia” Tour Sells Out Barclays Center

rod waves tour 2023

“Electrifying” is the only word to define the experience of seeing Rod Wave while being a part of a sold out crowd at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Seats were filled, cameras were flashing and the crowd was roaring.

The Florida-native released his fifth studio album “Nostalgia” on Sept. 15. Shortly after the release,  Rod Wave announced his Nostalgia Tour. The singer stopped in the Big Apple on Nov. 11, singing hits from his past albums and his latest releases.

The concert was broken up into chapters;each one based on his previous albums. Starting with his 2019 debut album, “Ghetto Gospel.” This was a tribute to his original fans.

The artist played fan favorites such as “Sky Priority,” “Poison” and “Green Light.” These classics took fans who have been “day one” supporters back in time to the songs that put the artist on the map.

The next chapter was titled “Pray 4 Love,” based on Rod Wave’s second album released in 2020. The artist turned his pain into passion and delivered achingly soulful melodies. Some of his best songs came from this album such as “Dark Clouds,” “Rags2Riches” and “Letter From Houston.”

The third chapter was titled “ SoulFly ,” Rod Wave’s first ever Billboard No.1 album and it wouldn’t be his last. This masterpiece was released in 2021 and this is where he started to become very mainstream. The crowd sang in unison when hits such as  “ Tombstone ” and “ Street Runner ” played, two of the most famous songs in his discography.

After “Soulfly” came the “ Beautiful Mind ” chapter, named after the 2022 album and his second Billboard No. 1 hit.  After being labeled as a “sad artist” with “unsustainable music,” the album tells stories of his dark  adolescent life “Beautiful Mind” was a project Rod Wave released to tell people that things get better no matter what circumstances you face as long as you stay patient and hopeful.

The vibrant performance of “By Your Side” and “Sweet Little Lies” lit up Barclays. This chapter featured special guest A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, to perform “Jungle” and a tribute to the late Pop Smoke.

The final chapter was the “ Nostalgia ” chapter, based off the artist’s most recent album.  This was the name of Rod Wave’s most recent album which dropped two months ago. It also was his third consecutive No. 1 album. He performed “Boyz Don’t Cry,” “Turks & Caicos” and “Crazy” which were all popular hits from the album.

He also performed “Come See Me” and did his controversial backwards fall out the window stunt. As he fell from a prop balcony to under the stage, the crowd burst into the loudest cheer of the night as this has become his trademark move while on tour. In this song he sings, “Last night I was so high I almost jumped out of the window.”

Singer-songwriter Sadie Jean then made an appearance and performed “2018” with Rod Wave as they both propelled up on rising pads. Her soft melodic chorus was sung throughout the arena as the spotlight focused on her.

“I appreciate this so much,” Rod Wave said as he ended the night with “Great Gatsby.” The crowd erupted as the stage lights became red and sparks flew from the ceiling, ending the night with the perfect song. The concert was amazing and Rod Wave’s lasting impact on the people he touches is immeasurable.

Rod Wave: Nostalgia Tour

Dec 18, 2023 | 8:00 pm.

A wave of emotion

Image of a mountain canyon dotted with sagebrush, pine trees and aspen.

Even over a year later, tears well up in his eyes when he talks about it. The “wave of emotion,” as he describes it, is understandable given that the moment was 15 years in the making. “Even last summer when I took my son and his friend out there and told them the story; it still gave me chills to think about it, and just a huge sense of accomplishment.”

In June 2021, Chad Mellison, a fish and wildlife biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Reno, Nevada, was flyfishing the North Fork of the Humboldt River in northeastern Nevada. Mellison was in the area for field work and had never fished this section of the river before and decided to make a few casts after completing his field work and before heading home.

Little did he know that casting his line in that day would lead to one of the most meaningful moments of his career.

“On my first cast into the pool the fish took my fly! It was totally meant to happen. It was perfect,” said Mellison when describing the moment. After releasing the fish unharmed back in the water, he knew the day wasn’t going to get any better, so he put his fly rod away, ate breakfast and left for home.

Mellison had just caught a Lahontan cutthroat trout in a river where as recently as 2011 the fish did not exist.

“On the way home I thought about all of the people who contributed to making this moment possible and contacted them as soon as I could to share the good news,” he said.

Mellison’s emotional day was only possible because of the tenacity of several dedicated agencies and individuals to return the fish to the river over the course of many, many years.

A close up of a Lahontan cutthroat trout, a fish with a gold body, dark spots and a faint red stripe.

History of Lahontan cutthroat trout and the North Fork of the Humboldt River

Lahontan cutthroat trout are Nevada’s state fish and the largest inland cutthroat trout in the country. They are also protected under the Endangered Species Act as threatened but can be fished for recreational purposes in accordance with state law.

These top predators once swam in 12 lake systems and more than 7,000 miles of stream in the Lahontan Basin, which extends from the northeast corner of Nevada to California’s central Sierra Nevada mountains. Today Lahontan cutthroat trout occupy just about 10 percent of their historical habitat, which has been altered or lost to water diversions, overgrazing, and competition from non-native fish like rainbow, brook or brown trout.

Lahontan cutthroat trout need the same habitat as any other trout; cold, clean and complex connected waterways to support their entire life cycle.

Faith Machuca, the Service’s Lahontan cutthroat trout recovery ecologist, remembers hearing this from her supervisor her first day on the job. Machuca, who wears her awe of and dedication to saving this fish on her sleeve, will happily talk about Lahontan cutthroat trout biology and the conservation efforts needed to recover them for hours.

“They need cold enough water to be able to persist since they’re cold-water fish,” Machuca. “And not polluted water, and habitat connectivity is really, really important.”

Having enough connected streams and rivers within a system allows the native trout to fully express the variety of their life cycle in a natural way by being able to move around a system.

According to Machuca, a lot of Lahontan cutthroat trout populations are now sequestered to high mountain streams across Northern Nevada and the Eastern Sierra, and they can’t move around the entirety of their historical habitat the way they used to.

“You’ll have resident populations in certain sections of the water year-round,” said Machuca. “But during really good water years, if there’s good, interconnected water, they’ll be able to move to better habitat with changing conditions as the year goes on [and conditions change]. That’s kind of the point of the connected water; when parts of the system dry up, they’re able to move to other parts of the system.”

The North Fork of the Humboldt River and its tributaries once provided this variety of habitat for the Lahontan cutthroat trout there.

An image of a mountain canyon dotted with sagebrush and pine trees.

The headwaters of the North Fork of the Humboldt River are in the Independence Mountains of northeastern Nevada within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. From there it flows generally in a southerly direction for more than 95 miles before joining the main branch of the Humboldt River, 15 miles northeast of Elko, Nevada.

In the late 1980s and early ‘90s a gold mine operated in the North Fork’s headwaters. The mine eventually shut down operations, leaving behind several pit lakes . During open-pit surface mining operations, large holes, often hundreds of feet deep and wide, are dug to extract ore body. Groundwater often flows into these pits, which is pumped out during operations. When a mining operation is finished, the pumping stops, and pit lakes form.

Because of the mining operations in the area, state and federal biologists routinely monitored water quality, ground water levels, Lahontan cutthroat population numbers, and even collected data on what insects inhabited the area. In the late ‘90s through the early 2000s, the North Fork population of Lahontan cutthroat trout, which mostly occupied the upper reaches of the river, was estimated to be the biggest stream population in its range, averaging about 4,000 fish, according to a University of Nevada Reno study.

Then something mysterious, yet ultimately detrimental to the thriving population, happened.

In 2006 another mining company was conducting exploratory drilling in the area in search of gold. Following one such exploration, a nearby pit lake left behind by the previous mining operation drained rapidly. After much investigation by the Service, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Nevada Department of Environmental Protection and the mining company, the group surmised that the drilling had connected the local aquifer to another further downstream; essentially acting as a straw between the two.

“Due to the drainage event, the groundwater [level] dropped 226 feet below ground,” said Mellison. “This is significant because it was this groundwater that was pumping out of the springs that were supplying water to the North Fork. The springs supplying water ceased, and the headwaters dried up.”

Image of a dry creek bed surrounded by green willow trees.

As the headwaters of the North Fork began to dry up, the Lahontan cutthroat trout there were forced further and further downriver. There they met non-native brook and rainbow trout.

Brook trout outcompete with the Lahontan cutthroat for food and territory, and even eat them. Rainbow trout hybridize with the native cutthroat trout, slowly watering down the genetic integrity of the species.

By 2011, NDOW surveys indicated that the native fish no longer survived in the North Fork of the Humboldt River.

One step at a time

Eventually the exploratory drilling hole was plugged and the aquifer that supplies the North Fork began to fill, and so too did the river. But before Lahontan cutthroat trout could be reintroduced, partners needed to address the ongoing threat of competition and predation by the non-native brook trout.

First, in 2013 the mining company funded and installed a fish barrier on the river within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest to prevent brook trout from traveling further upriver.

A year later, NDOW began the daunting task of removing any remaining brook trout above the fish barrier by treating the river with rotenone, a commonly used,  naturally derived compound to remove unwanted fish species to prevent competition for resources with Lahontan cutthroat trout.

“The system is so large and complex, mechanical removal (removing fish by hand) is ineffective. I compare it to removing potato bugs by hand in a potato field,” said Jacob Stoller, a NDOW fisheries biologist. “You’re only capturing like 40-50% of the fish in that area and you can’t effectively collapse the [brook trout] population.”

Nearly 80 people from NDOW and partner agencies worked for two years to remove brook trout on 44 miles of water ways including the North Fork main stem, five tributaries, and connected water diversions all fed by multiple spring sources.

Once the removal efforts were complete, NDOW began returning Lahontan cutthroat trout to the North Fork using fish from other populations in the watershed. Between 2015 and 2018 about 400 cutthroat were put into the river above the fish barrier.

While this was going on, a nearby landowner entered into a Safe Harbor Agreement with the Service and NDOW, agreeing to take part in Lahontan cutthroat trout recovery efforts on their land; in this case, removal of non-native trout to eliminate the threat and allow the native cutthroat to return.

A Safe Harbor Agreement is a voluntary agreement between the Service and private landowners who take action to contribute to the recovery of a federally protected species on their land. In exchange for actively taking part in the recovery of a species, the landowner receives formal assurance that the Service will not require additional or different management activities unless the landowner agrees. Funds provided by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation , administered by Trout Unlimited , supported the development of this particular SHA along with others in the Great Basin.

Stoller attributes the ability to work with the landowner to years of communication between his agency and others with the local community. Without those relationships, the Safe Harbor Agreement might not have been possible.

Just as things were looking up, a wildfire threatened the river, the fish and the years of hard work partners had put in to restore the habitat and recover the fish.

In August 2018 the South Sugarloaf Fire erupted from a lightning strike southwest of Owyhee, Nevada in Elko County and eventually spread east into the North Fork watershed. In all, the fire burned more than 230,000 acres of federal, Tribal and private land.

Yet, it wasn’t a detrimental setback due to work by the U.S. Forest Service to restore and improve habitat.

“You never know with fire; sometimes it can mean [a species] extirpation,” said Mellison. “Due to good watershed management by the Forest Service, the habitat was in really good shape and able to recover quickly from the fire.”

Biologists are hopeful about the future of the North Fork Lahontan cutthroat trout population and are awaiting eDNA results to confirm that brook trout have been eradicated from the river. The team worked with NFWF and TU to fund $80,000 in eDNA testing in the North Fork and elsewhere throughout Lahontan cutthroat trout's range.

A template for recovery

While Mellison’s banner day in June 2021 represents the results of years of hard work by many, Lahontan cutthroat trout recovery partners – a team of federal, state, Tribal and NGO experts and leadership - recognize that more collaborative efforts like this are needed to save Lahontan cutthroat trout across Nevada, California and Oregon.

To operationalize and focus those efforts, the team developed  The 2019 Updated Goals and Objectives -or UGOs - for recovery to guide conservation using current scientific information about the species biology, habitat needs and threats.

A close up image of two men in fishing gear surrounded by green trees.

The UGOs provide a template for recovery, yet they are not prescriptive because habitat conditions, threats and other factors vary across the Lahontan cutthroat trout range.

In 2023 the Service completed a  Status Review of Lahontan cutthroat trout which found that the species continues to decline, and habitat continues to be lost across its range. On the upside, the review also revealed that several populations could be improved in the near term through low-to-moderate level of effort conservation projects, and that knowledge is helping to refine conservation planning for priority populations and habitat.

"We already have the tools needed to recover Lahontan cutthroat trout over the next 5-10 years in existing, priority populations that have a high likelihood of remaining resilient after management actions like sustainable livestock practices or removal of non-native [fish] species are established,” said Machuca.

Bringing Lahontan cutthroat trout back from the brink will take concerted, collaborative efforts, and time and patience agree Machuca and Mellison.

“These things that we do out there don’t always happen overnight. It takes patience, and a good team to navigate the roadblocks,” said Mellison. “You’ve got to have tenacity in this job because you’re going to run into brick walls, and you’ve got to figure out how to get around them.”

Machuca is optimistic that the tenacity of Lahontan cutthroat trout recovery partners will one day restore the native population across its range for all future generations to appreciate as much as she does.

“People are traveling from far away to fish for Lahontan cutthroat trout because they are a really beautiful and unique fish that’s worth traveling here for,” said Machuca. “Chad caught an insanely cool fish in the North Fork of the Humboldt River after this project. And there’s really cool populations elsewhere that you can angle for. I really want the world to see the awesomeness of this fish and that it exists [in rivers and streams] throughout Northern Nevada and parts of California and Oregon."
