The largest town in the southern part of the Netherlands and the fifth-largest in the country, Eindhoven isn't a destination that tourists usually think of — which is a pity.

Located in a picturesque setting on the River Dommel, Eindhoven offers a number of great attractions and numerous rewarding things to do, from exploring its great museums to discovering its deep connections with famed artist Vincent Van Gogh.

Because of its connections with electronics giant Philips, Eindhoven has been given the nickname of "Lichtstad," or the City of Light. Over 130 years old, this now-massive company is one of the country's industrial powerhouses, a fact that's very much evident pretty much anywhere you go in the city.

Founded in 1936 and housed in one of the city's most interesting modern buildings, the Van Abbemuseum is one of the most important galleries of modern and contemporary art in the Netherlands. Highlights of its more than 2,700 artworks include pieces by modern painters such as Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso.

It's also home to the world's largest collection of material by the influential Russian artist and designer, El Lissitzky. Other notable collections include numerous sculptures and art installations.

Video works and posters can also be seen, including a large Paris collection from Jacqueline de Jong, as well as examples from the USA, Germany, and Eastern Europe. A gift shop and café are located on-site.

Eindhoven has been home to DAF, one of Europe's largest truck manufacturers, and at one time, cars, since the company's founding in 1928.

Short for Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek, the company was founded by brothers Hub and Wim Van Doorne in a small blacksmith's shop. From humble beginnings making simple engineering products, the company gradually progressed from trailers to cars and trucks.

One of the most popular museums in the southern Netherlands, the DAF Museum is a testament to the company's success. Highlights include a replica of the original workshops and offices, along with samples of its vehicles throughout the decades, including a number of prototypes.

Guided tours are available, and a shop and restaurant are located on the premises.

Calling Eindhoven football-obsessed is an understatement. But such claims seem reasonable when you're home to Philips Sport Vereniging (PSV), one of the most successful football (soccer) franchises in Europe. And with the club fast approaching its 110th anniversary in 2024, there's plenty of history on display at the PSV Museum (PSV Musée).

Highlights of a visit include the chance to see historic outfits and artifacts as well as photos and film footage of career highlights. English-language guided tours of the team's Philips Stadium (Philips Stadion Eindhoven) are also available and include packages that take in team practices, so you can see the players in action.

Attractive St. Catherine's Church (St. Catharinakerk) was built in Neo-Gothic style in 1867. The original building, dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, was consecrated in the 13th century and was many times severely damaged by war and fire, even spending part of the 18th century as a stables and weapons store.

Now fully restored, the current structure incorporates a number of symbolic references to the work of Joseph Thijm, one of the country's best-known writers. Highlights of a visit include seeing its twin French Gothic towers, each 73 meters tall and known respectively as David and Maria.

Interior highlights include its stained-glass windows and its two organs, one of them with 5,723 pipes.

Housed near the original factory where Gerard Philips made his first incandescent light bulbs in the 1890s, the Philips Museum shows how this once-small enterprise has grown to become one of the world's largest electronics companies. A visit to this ultra-modern attraction gives visitors an excellent overview of the company's success, as well as the workings of its most memorable products.

One of the museum's most popular features is Mission Eureka, an interactive game involving digital quizzes and puzzles. There are also many other fun interactive exhibits that children enjoy. English-language guided tours of the museum and Philips-related city landmarks are available.

Art fans will also want to include the top-notch Phillips Collection on their list of must-visits in Eindhoven. Established in 1921, the museum houses a large contemporary art collection of some 3,000 works from around the world.

Take a drive just eight kilometers northeast of Eindhoven and you'll come to the picture-perfect village of Nuenen.

Known as the Van Gogh Village Museum , it's famous the world over for its inclusion in the art of Vincent Van Gogh, who lived here from 1883 to 1885. His temporary home was in the pastor's house, which has been completely restored to its original style and is one of 21 historic buildings preserved on the site.

A highlight of a visit is the Vincentre . This excellent and recently expanded attraction is dedicated to the artist and his time in Nuenen, and is the focal point of many great walks following in Van Gogh's footsteps. These self-guided tours through what's referred to as The Outdoor Museum lead you to more than 20 different locations spread around the village that relate to the artist.

In addition to the latest audiovisual technology, audio commentary brings the life and times of one of Europe's most revered painters to life in a fascinating fashion.

One of the most unusual attractions in Eindhoven, PreHistorisch Dorp , or the "Prehistoric Village," is a replica of an ancient community complete with dwellings and demonstrations of skills used by prehistoric people. This fun open-air museum recreates life from this and later eras, including Roman and early medieval times.

In North Brabant (Noord Brabant), the second largest of the Dutch provinces, agriculture was once the main livelihood before the textile, electrical, and metalworking industries blossomed after 1900. As a result, most of the settlements in the province were small hamlets and villages with farms growing crops such as rye, potatoes, oats, and fodder plants for dairy cattle.

At PreHistorisch Dorp, costumed interpreters bring the history of this province to life, going about everyday tasks and interacting with visitors in a variety of fun interactive programs and hands-on workshops. These might include learning to make a fire as prehistoric people did, baking bread on a stick, or learning how to make a Roman fibula, a form of garment pin popular 2000 years ago.

Prehistoric farming methods, hand weaving and spinning, metalwork, and other skills are also demonstrated and discussed here. Although very engaging for children, this is an experience for all ages. All signage is in English, as well as Dutch, and guided tours are available.

In mid-November each year, Eindhoven hosts an international light art festival known as " GLOW ." This popular winter event features light artists from all over the world who transform the city into a wonderland of spectacular displays of colored lights.

More than 30 illuminations transform streets and buildings each night. Perhaps the most breathtaking of all these is the illumination of the façade of Saint Catherine's Church , picking out its architectural details in different colors.

Another important annual festival is Lichtjesroute , held each autumn to mark the city's liberation from German occupation in 1944.

Eindhoven is blessed with a number of excellent green spaces providing locals and visitors with ample room to relax. One of the most popular is Genneper Parken. This nearly 500-acre green space is set in a pretty location on the Tongelreep and Dommel rivers in a valley conservation area.

The Inkijkmuseum is not only one of Eindhoven's most interesting museums, it's also certainly the city's smallest. Literally translated as a "look-in" museum, it's housed in what was the washhouse of a former linen factory. I grew up in a little village in the south of the Netherlands, and Eindhoven was my main big city. 20 minutes by car (or 50 by bus) and you’d be right in the city centre. It naturally became the place where my friends and I would go shopping and watch the latest films at the cinema. It’s a city close to my heart but sadly, its potential is often overlooked by tourists who are visiting the Netherlands.

HELLO, there is more to this country than Amsterdam!

As Eindhoven is basically my hometown, I’ve taken it upon myself to become a bit of an advocate for the city – to show the world what this amazing city has to offer. That’s why I’m sharing my favourite things to do in Eindhoven in this local travel guide.

Now, let’s get into the best things to do in Eindhoven. Being crowned the design capital of the Netherlands and hometown of Philips, Eindhoven has quite a rich history. Nowadays, Eindhoven is filled with even more innovation, design, and creativity! Follow this guide below to plan your one day Eindhoven itinerary.

Things to do in Eindhoven

Here are some of the best things to do in Eindhoven:

1. St. Catherine’s Church

This beautiful neo-gothic Catholic church is one of the prime buildings in Eindhoven. Right outside the main shopping street (The Demer), you can find St. Catherine’s Church. It is a little oasis for peace and quiet in the middle of a busy city centre. Take 15 – 30 minutes out of your day to visit this stunning piece of architecture and have a little wander inside.

2. Van Abbe Museum

I remember visiting the Van Abbe Museum for my art history classes back in high school. To my surprise (being a teenager forced to visit museums for a class she didn’t particularly enjoy), I had a wonderful time! The museum is filled with modern and contemporary art and is located in the centre of Eindhoven.

While researching some background information about the museum, I found out that it’s actually one of the first public museums for contemporary art to be established in Europe! Pretty cool, ey?

3. The Blob

One thing I love about Eindhoven is its cool and futuristic buildings. Blob is probably my favourite! On 18 September Square, you can find it stands out from the more traditional buildings. Blob was designed by Massimiliano Fuksas and inside the building, you will find some shops and a lunchroom.

4. Philips Museum

Eindhoven is the hometown of world-famous electrical company Philips, it’s the city’s main claim to fame. The impact Philips has had on the world is immense, and it’s awesome to see that it all started in a small city like Eindhoven.

5. DAF Museum

As well as being the hometown of Philips, Eindhoven has also been home to DAF (Europe’s largest truck manufacturer) since it opened back in 1928. Back when the company opened, they still made cars too! In this popular museum, you can learn all about the company’s history, its products, and rare prototype vehicles. 6. Strijp-S District

Formerly owned by Philips, Strijp-S used to be Eindhoven’s industrial park. It used to be known as “ the forbidden city” , as only Philips employees had access to the grounds. Since the start of the 2000s, this neighbourhood has been transformed into a growing hub for creative companies, independent shops, and Instagram-able eateries. A perfect place to explore the more creative (and maybe a little more hipster) side of Eindhoven.

Natlab is an independent cinema located in Strijp-S. The name (which translates into Physics Laboratory) was given to this cinema as the building was formerly used as Philip’s laboratory. Einstein once gave a lecture here! It now offers a meeting place for film fanatics to watch anything from famous blockbuster films to low-budget documentaries.

8. Urban Shopper

Fitting in perfectly with the creative side of the city, Strijp-S has a shopping centre filled with unique and independent shops. Urban Shopper is located in what was previously used as a Philips factory hall. It stayed true to the heritage with its industrial look.

You can find anything from fashion and design to books and furniture here! Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s worth wandering around.

9. Gusj Market

If you’re a bit of an interior freak like yours truly, Gusj Market is a must-visit in Eindhoven. It is filled with unique furniture and smaller decorative pieces. Some pieces are on the expensive side , but it’s such a great place for home inspiration! It’s like walking through a real live Pinterest board.

10. Intelligentia Ice

Ice cream, patisserie, tea, coffee and probably the most Instagram friendly interior in the whole of Eindhoven. What is not to love? Oh, and they have a variety of vegan sorbet, coconut, and almond-based flavours and shakes.

11. Soul Kitchen In Strijp-S

As you might guess from the name, Soul Kitchen is a restaurant in Strijp-S, Eindhoven. But it’s more than just a restaurant. You can read a book from their exchange library, play music, meet new people, play some board games and of course, have a bite to eat.

One thing I love about Soul Kitchen is that it is used as an education centre for young adults who dream of working in hospitality. I’m all for giving people the means to follow their passion.

12. Coffeelab

I’m not gonna lie. I wish my apartment looked like the interior of Coffeelab . Coffee, plants, and furniture that might as well have been stolen straight out of my Pinterest “Home Inspiration” board. All cakes, sandwiches and other bites are homemade (and a lot of them are vegan!).

Coffeelab is located right outside the train station and it’s by far my favourite place for coffee in the whole of Eindhoven! If you’re travelling by train, definitely make sure to stop here for your daily caffeine kick.

13. Gourmet Market

Inspired by LA’s downtown gourmet market, Eindhoven opened its own food market in 2017. Bringing 21 individual eateries to the heart of the city centre. What I love about this place is that there is literally something for everybody.

From sushi to special Dutch bitterballen and other traditional Dutch dishes , the Gourmet Market has it all. Add that to the cosy atmosphere and you’ve got yourself a lovely, unique dinner experience.

14. De Burger

The best place in Eindhoven for… burgers! Guess you didn’t see that coming. Not only is the food to die for, but the interior is also on point. With a cosy atmosphere, lovely staff and some board games to play – De Burger deserves a place on this list! (Vegetarian options available)

15. XU Noodle Bar

This family-owned restaurant in Eindhoven is THE place for everything noodle. Inspired by generations-old family recipes, XU Noodle Bar is my favourite Asian-styled restaurant in the city. Their dishes are both tasty and affordable, a win-win! The ramen I had are definitely the tastiest ramen I’ve had since returning from Japan.

Mood is on the more expensive side, but worth every penny (or… you know… every euro cent. Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it…). If you’re looking for something a little bit different, Mood might be the perfect option for you. Their menu is a mixture of classical French dishes with a twist of Asian cuisine.

17. Vane Skybar

On top of the NH Hotel Eindhoven , you can find the best view across the city: Vane Skybar . Even though the restaurant and bar on the top of this 5* hotel are a little pricey, the view is stunning!

You can get to Vane by entering the NH Hotel on Vestdijk street. Take the elevators to the 13th floor and ta-da, you’re in the restaurant! A pair of stairs will take you up to the roof, where the bar is located. We visited it the bar during the day, and luckily the sun made the view absolutely stunning, but I can only imagine how lovely it would look at night!

18. Stratumseind

Stratumseind is THE place to go clubbing in Eindhoven. I’m not much of a clubbing gal myself, as I much prefer a beer at a pub, but hey, each their own. If you want to have a taste of the Eindhoven nightlife, Stratumseind is the place to go. Tons of clubs, bars, and fast food places for when you’re done partying.

Craving a beer in the pub? You can find O’Shea’s Irish pub just around the corner of Stratumseind.

19. Piazza and the Bijenkorf

Close to BLOB and the 18 September Square, you find Piazza. It’s a small shopping centre with a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. One shop that I’d highly recommend you check out is De Bijenkorf. This high-end department store sells anything from clothing, shoes, and cosmetics to books, toys, and home-ware.

20. Nieuwe Emmasingel

Right outside of BLOB, you can walk through a little street called Nieuwe Emmasingel. You can find some of my favourite shops on this street, mainly because it’s a little bit different from the main shopping street. My two big recommendations on this street are Bookstore van Piere and Home Stocks .

21. The Demer

From Piazza, you can walk straight onto the Demer – Eindhoven’s main shopping street. Here, you can find mainstream shops like Mango, Pull & Bear and Apple. Some shops I’d recommend you check out if you’re not very familiar with Dutch stores are HEMA , Blokker, and Etos .

A local market is held every Tuesday on the Demer and the Market in Eindhoven – keep this in mind when planning your shopping trip! It can get quite busy, but it’s fun to see all the market stands.

22. Heuvel Shopping Centre

If you’re looking for more mainstream fashion shops, you can visit Heuvel. It’s located near the Market (which is basically next to the Demer) and you can find more than 80 shops inside.

23. Kleine and Grote Berg

The Kleine Berg, Grote Berg, and Bergstraat create a cozy little triangle of streets in Eindhoven. The three streets are mainly known for their exclusive boutiques. If you’re looking for a little bit more character compared to the usual H&M-Zara shops, this would be a great place to start!

24. GLOW Light Art Festival

Eindhoven is also known as the City of Light . With the city’s connection with Philips, Eindhoven became a source of light for the entire world. Eindhoven took that title a step further when it introduced GLOW in 2006.

The light art festival includes a five-kilometre walk through the city centre and has grown into one of the biggest light art festivals in Europe. In 2018, more than 750,000 people from across the globe visited Eindhoven for GLOW. GLOW is usually held in November. For more accurate dates and times, you can check out GLOW’s official website.

25. Dutch Design Week (DDW)

Eindhoven is also the home of the annual Dutch Design Week. As the city is a hub for design and innovation, companies like Philips and DAF have pushed for Eindhoven to become the design capital of the Netherlands. The Design Academy Eindhoven and the Eindhoven University of Technology also take part in organizing this exciting week promoting these creative industries.

During the Dutch Design Wee k, you can find exhibitions, workshops, and seminars across 110+ locations across the city. Starting out as the Day of Design back in 1998, this event has grown to attract more than 335,000 visitors!

Six weeks before Easter Sunday, Carnaval arrives in the South of the Netherlands. This celebration can only really be described as “dressing up for 4 days, getting drunk, party and enjoying the sight of Carnaval parades with handmade Carnaval floats through cities and towns”. Yes, it sounds crazy! But hey, it also sounds fun, right?

Carnaval is traditionally celebrated in the south of the Netherlands (yes, in Eindhoven!) and if you’re planning to visit the country for Carnaval I’d highly recommend going to Eindhoven. This is mainly because of the cheap airlines flying to Eindhoven Airport. Hotels are generally speaking a lot cheaper in Eindhoven compared to other big cities and you can easily take the train to other cities in the Netherlands .

Is Eindhoven Worth Visiting?

Even though the city is often missed by tourists, Eindhoven bursts with energy and creativity! It may not be the most popular destination to visit in the Netherlands, but it’s lively, exciting and filled with tons of quirky places to explore. Plus, it’s a lot cheaper compared to cities like Amsterdam and Utrecht!

Being the design capital of the Netherlands, Eindhoven has some stunning pieces of architecture and is home to the annual Dutch Design Week . The city is definitely growing more popular and has started to attract more and more independent shops, cafes and unique new businesses. Rather than diving into very touristy cities like Amsterdam, Eindhoven gives you a glimpse of the real Dutch lifestyle.

Eindhoven is also home to the famous Dutch football team PSV . I’m personally not really into football, but having moved from Eindhoven to Manchester , I’m kinda forced to know a little bit about the sport. As I’m not incredibly knowledgeable (or passionate) about the topic, I’m not going into too much football detail – but make sure to visit the PSV museum and stadium when in Eindhoven if you’re a fan!

How To Get To Eindhoven?

By plane: Eindhoven Airport is the second largest airport in the Netherlands, and it seems to always be expanding! When visiting the Netherlands, I usually fly to Eindhoven. Even though it’s nowhere near as big as Amsterdam Airport, it still serves well over 1.6 million passengers yearly! Many budget airlines fly to Eindhoven, which is another win – I can usually get flights for as little as £15!

Right outside the airport you can find the bus stop. Bus 400 or 401 takes you to Eindhoven Central within 15 minutes. You can buy a ticket on the bus or inside the airport.

By train: Visiting Eindhoven by train is super easy, as the main station is located right inside the city centre. From Amsterdam, it takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes and a single ticket costs around €25. You can buy tickets online through Trainline or buy a ticket at the service desk at any train station in the Netherlands. Because Eindhoven isn’t a huge city, you can easily spend one day in Eindhoven and see most of the highlights.

Where to Stay in Eindhoven?

Because Eindhoven is not a massive city, I’d highly recommend staying somewhere in the city centre. It’s local, close to everything and even if you’re planning on travelling outside the centre, public transport can take you there.

Student Hotel (4*)

My number one recommendation for places to stay in Eindhoven has to be the Student Hotel . It’s located right outside the train station, in the heart of Eindhoven. It’s very affordable and has that unique touch that I really appreciate. There are communal areas where you can meet people, play games or get on with work in a co-working environment. And it’s not just for students!

Looking for a higher-end hotel to stay at? You might want to check out Brabant’s very first 5* hotel, NH Hotel Eindhoven . It’s located only 5-minutes by foot from the train station. As mentioned before in this travel guide, the NH Hotel also has a beautiful Sky Bar. From there, you can enjoy the sight of the entire city.

Eindhoven is a cool little city to go to. I really enjoyed my time there. Unfortunately, when I was there quite a few of the places I wanted to go to were closed. I think because of the time of year, I’m not sure. I wish I saw this list before I went, the Urban Shopper shop looks really good! I’ll definitely have to plan a trip back there and go to these places!!

15 Best Things to Do in Eindhoven (the Netherlands)

Eindhoven is the fifth largest city in the Netherlands and lies in the south of the country near the Dommel and Gender streams.

The history of Eindhoven spans as far back as the 13th century when the town was originally a small settlement with a wooden castle.

Due to its fortifications and favourable location the town grew and was reinforced throughout the 16th century where it was captured by Spanish troops.

During WW2 large parts of the city were destroyed however after this devastation Eindhoven became the Dutch capital of industrial design and is now a thriving city with a great variety of tourist attractions and museums.

1. Van Abbemuseum

The Van Abbemuseum is one of the finest museums of modern and contemporary art in Europe and contains an extensive collection with over 2700 works of art.

The museum is located in the Stratumseind district not far from the main train station.

The old architecture of the museum dates back to the early 1900’s and its collection was started by a private collector – Henri Van Abbe.

The amazing collections includes works from Picasso, Mondrain, Kandinsky and El Lissitzky and features around 700 paintings and 1000 sculptures and video work.

2. Eindhoven Museum

This fantastic museum is located near the Genneper Park in the southern part of Eindhoven and is a wonderful place to learn about life in ages past.

This open air museum focuses on both the iron and middle ages and aims to educated people on what day to day life was like during these times.

The museum is very hands on and has many recreations of old buildings, demonstrations and re-enactments of different tasks and daily procedures.

It is a brilliant place for families and children will be entertained for hours here and learn a great deal.

This immense and unusual complex was once a science museum but now serves as a conference centre and was created by the electronics giant Philips.

The sheer magnificence and bizarre nature of the building have transformed it into a tourist landmark and one of Eindhoven’s icons.

The Evoluon building looks like a flying saucer and the dome is 77m in diameter.

While the building now stands as a conference centre, you can still take a tour of its fantastic and futuristic interior.

4. Genneper Park

The Genneper park has a wide variety of different activities spread over 200 acres of land just outside the main ring road surrounding Eindhoven.

The park has some beautiful landscapes and natural areas to walk around and it is easy to see why over 3 million people have visited this place.

Inside the park, expect to find hidden ponds, cute wooden bridges and some picture perfect old architecture.

Aside from the first class parkland, there is also an Ice skating rink, a swimming pool and a restaurant.

5. Stadswandelpark

This is another of Eindhoven’s fine public parks and is located not far from the Genneper park in the south of the city.

The park is extremely beautiful and has a statue garden, some fantastically manicured lawns and a range of peaceful paths and trails to walk through.

There is also a large lake with some quaint bridges that allow you to admire the water first hand.

A recent addition to the park is the entertaining spacewalk app – Download this app to your Smartphone and then walk through the park – You will be transported into outer space and see rockets, planets and astronauts!

6. St. Catherine’s Church

This stunning church is a magnificent structure and features a recognisable front facade with large circular stained glass window and twin bell towers.

The church is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria and was first mentioned in the early history if Eindhoven dating back to the 1200’s.

St. Catherine’s features a Neo-Gothic design which has changed over the years and its twin towers stand at 73m high.

During WW2 the church was damaged heavily however restoration was performed and it was dedicated a national monument in 1972. At night the church is lit up in a displays of fantastic colours which also lights up the decorative interior with its huge stone pillars and decorative arches.

7. Village of Nuenen

Approximately 10km to the east of Eindhoven lies the charming town of Nuenen.

This beautiful and traditional village is known for being a place where Vincent Van Gogh lived and was also the scene of a battle in the decisive Operation Market Garden during WW2. Van Gogh painted many pieces from Nuenen and some of his works detail the buildings and surrounding of the town.

The central park and the surrounding streets of Nuenen retain much of their old charm – many of the buildings are traditional and look like they are from a previous era.

Ensure you visit the Vincentre which contains a great amount of history and works of the celebrated artists.

8. Philips Museum

You cannot go to Eindhoven without seeing something related to the Philips empire – This electronics giant has routs in the city and it has a large presence here.

The Philips museum provides a detailed look at the history of both Eindhoven and Philips as a company.

You will gain a greater appreciation of the business and see how it has helped to shape Eindhoven into the economic powerhouse that it is today.

Learn about how the company started in the light bulb industry, right up to the modern day where it is now considered a pioneer for electronics and things like X-ray technology and complex lighting systems.

9. PSV Eindhoven Museum

The PSV Eindhoven museum is located within the enormous Philips stadium and is a must see for football fans.

The city is football crazy and its beloved team PSV has a long and successful history in the world of football.

If you are a PSV fan then this place is the Mecca for the club, and if you are just a sport fan, you will appreciate the history and memorabilia that is presented here.

See the 100+ years of the club in great detail with such displays as the hall of fame which contains megastars like Romario and a collection of interesting photos and historical objects.

Children will also have a great time here as there are several interactive displays and even a small pitch where they can have a kick-up!

10. Eindhoven Bottle Distillery

This small family run brewery is actually a fascinating and welcoming place and a surprising find in the large city of Eindhoven.

The passion and love the employees of the brewery have is clear to see and exploring their world truly is a special and memorable thing to do.

The brewery is located near part of the old town centre and next to the Dommel river.

The owner is extremely friendly and will be more than happy to give you a tour and share his knowledge of the distilling and brewing processes.

For a personal look at the world of small scale brewing, this really is a great place to visit.

11. DAF Museum

The DAF Museum is located in the centre of Eindhoven and is not far from both the train station and the Van Abbemuseum.

This intriguing museum is an automobile buff’s dream come true.

Here you can find an amazing amount of history about cars, trucks, and vehicle manufacturing.

See historical cars such as the three wheel Mobile Raincoat that was small enough to fit in a hallway, and the Jan de Rooy Juggernaught.

The displays of trucks, cars, fire engines and lorries is really well maintained and a fantastic insight into automotive history.

12. PSV Eindhoven Stadium

The Philips stadium is the home of PSV Eindhoven and is considered a high quality stadium with its impressive stands and design.

The stadium has stood for many years and was originally a sports ground for Philips employees in 1910. From there the stadium has been extended greatly to cope with the development and progression of PSV Eindhoven and to hold the capacity crowds that regularly attend home matches.

Aside from hosting the city’s premier team, the stadium has also played host to many national games and also music concerts and is one of the finest in the country.

Tours are available of the stadium but it may also be worth seeing if there is a match on during your stay in Eindhoven and experiencing the excitement of the fanatic Dutch football scene.

13. Het Veem Food Market

This local food market is a beautiful showcase for passionate chefs, cooks, and entrepreneurs who specialize in the food industry.

At the market you will find a tantalizing display of bread, cheeses, meats, vegetables, coffee, wines and a whole lot more.

The vendors have wonderfully crafted stalls and shops with displays full of colour and bursting with mouth watering smells and tastes.

It really is a delight to the senses and food lovers will really appreciate this cosy and atmospheric market.

14. Culinary walk through the city centre

What better way to explore the city of Eindhoven than to enjoy a culinary tour that provides a combination of history and first class food? There are several different tours you can take including a walk through the trendy Strijp-S area.

Tours will usually last round 1.5 hours and prices will include food (but not drinks) and a English speaking guide.

Walk through the fascinating streets of Eindhoven and explore its history and culture, and then finish with a top quality meal that really shows what the city has to offer in terms of culinary delights.

15. Park Hilaria

Park Hilaria is a festival that is held annually in Eindhoven in August and draws staggering crowds of over 500,000. The festival is truly like a huge playground and fairground combined with a delightful variety of rides, rollercoaster’s, live shows, street entertainment, circus acts, games stalls and food kiosks.

The park stretches for over 1km and although entry is free, a fee per ride is charged.

For a fun filled time, Park Hilaria will provide hours and hours of entertainment, laughs and exciting memories.

The Best Coffee Shops in Eindhoven, the Netherlands

Like all Dutch cities, Eindhoven is where you’ll find licensed coffee shops that can legally distribute weed, hashish and cannabis-infused edibles in small quantities to eat or smoke in, or to take away. Here is our selection of the best.

The idea of getting high in a Dutch coffee shop enjoys legendary status among smokers from countries where drug laws may be more rigidly observed. There are around a dozen places in Eindhoven, most of them outside the city centre, but all are worth visiting for their laid-back ambience and strain selections. As the name suggests, you can order coffee here, but premises are not allowed to sell alcoholic drinks or any other drugs. Tobacco has also been banned in coffee shops since April 2020, except in separate specially designated rooms.

Unlike most coffee shops across the Netherlands, Meetpoint opens its doors at 9am, which means smokers can drop in here to hang out early or pick up supplies before starting their day. There is funky modern art on the interior walls, mirrored ceilings and discreet but cool music playing in the background. The friendly, welcoming establishment also stocks many potent strains of cannabis, including White Widow. There is good coffee among the drinks on offer, and a selection of board games for passing the time.

CasaBlancha Koffieshop

This down-to-earth coffee shop is just a minute on foot from PSV Eindhoven’s world-renowned Philips football stadium , which makes it one of the best spots in the city to pick up some cannabis before or after a game. It’s also predictably popular at those times, so expect long queues to form. The interior décor is basic, although a film poster on one wall makes a cheeky nod to the classic movie that shares this place’s name. There’s always a decent selection of strains available, even as pre-rolled joints, and a separate smoking room where tobacco is allowed.

Coffeeshop Cool

Coffeeshop Cool is a small suburban shop, north of the city centre in Woensel, selling several varieties of cannabis with a friendly and welcoming vibe. While the range is not that large compared to other spots, the quality is generally good and the prices decent. Vinyl bench seating down one wall and the skyscraper mural behind give the smoking area the cosy feel of an American diner, without the food .

The Wall opened its doors in 1991 and has been selling cannabis to a loyal clientele ever since. The rather drab façade offers few clues as to what lies within. There’s a pool table, but what makes this place special is that the whole bar is decked out in psychedelic decor. The theme borrows a great deal of its funky styling from the Pink Floyd album that inspired its name. If nothing else, the rear mural mimicking the sleeve design will remove any doubt.

Coffeeshop de Highlander

De Highlander is a cannabis dispensary that sits on the corner of a quiet residential street in the eastern suburb of Tongelre. It’s a politely discreet affair, with a plain exterior and only a small sign announcing its presence. Nevertheless, the quality of the goods on offer is highly rated, and the prices are pretty reasonable. However, It only sells takeaway weed for home consumption as it doesn’t have an indoor smoking room.

Coffeeshop Euro-Garden

Euro-Garden is a popular place that sells a wide variety of high-quality strains at affordable prices. This street-corner coffee shop, just south of the city centre in Stratum, is still within walking distance from many of the city’s biggest attractions , including the Van Abbemuseum , a gallery that houses one of the Netherlands’ finest collections of modern art. The distractions on offer in Euro-Garden’s bright, modern, tiled-floor interior smoking room include table football, and the coffee is good here, too.

Coffeeshop High Times

This popular coffee shop, 2km to the south of central Eindhoven in Stratum, looks discreet from the outside, and the only clue about the shop’s wares is its less-than-cryptic name, but it’s renowned for stocking a varied selection of high-quality strains, including Sour Diesel. The furnishings here are simple, but there is a pinball machine, as well as a pool table and a classic arcade-style video game. High Times also sells cannabis-laced space cookies.

New Wave has a bar area at the front for coffee, and a spacious smoking area at the rear decked-out with comfy bench seating. The latter also features several large-screen TVs, as well as a pool table and table football. The coffeeshop is quite central and located close to Stratumseind, famous as the home of more than 30 pubs and often called ‘the longest bar in the Netherlands’. It’s also handily placed just around the corner from the Van Abbemuseum contemporary art gallery.

Coffeeshop Pink

Pink sells everything commonly associated with the Dutch cannabis industry, including particularly potent space cookies. The smoking room is dominated by a brightly coloured nature-themed mural on one wall. It’s well known for its welcoming ambience, fast service and excellent strains. Another big selling point is that it’s the closest coffee shop to Eindhoven’s central railway station, making it a popular first port of call for new arrivals in town. Long queues can form outside at busy times.

Where is Eindhoven?

Before we get started with the top things to do in Eindhoven, we want to tell you a bit more about the city.

Eindhoven is located in the South of the Netherlands, in the province of North Brabant. It’s the fifth-largest city in the country, with a population of just over 235,000 inhabitants.

You can reach the city by plane, car, train, or bus! Eindhoven has the second-biggest airport in the Netherlands. With airlines like Ryanair and Transavia flying to and from Eindhoven airport, it’s a great airport for cheap flights.

Eindhoven is only 1.5 hours away from Amsterdam by car, and an Amsterdam to Eindhoven train takes just 1 hour and 20 minutes!

Therefore, it’s pretty easy to travel to Eindhoven.

What To Do In Eindhoven

What’s the best way to get around the city and enjoy all Eindhoven activities? Eindhoven is not a very big city, so you can see a lot on foot. The old center, in particular, is perfect to discover on foot.

But we also recommend renting a bike to discover the city by bike! Because there is also a lot to do outside the center. Strijp-S for example, or the Berenkuil, where you can find a lot of street art.

Bike from place to place and go Eindhoven sightseeing. If you don’t want to walk or bike, you can also use Eindhoven’s public bus system.

Visit The Philips Museum

A list of things to do in Eindhoven isn’t complete without the Philips Museum! Visit the Philips Museum and learn about the history of Philips, also from former employees!

In 1891, Gerard Philips made the first Philips light bulb, in the center of Eindhoven. And here you will now find the Philips Museum. Which is definitely worth a visit!

Philips was (and still is) important to Eindhoven because without Philips Eindhoven would not have become what the city is today. At the beginning of the 20th century, the growth of Philips completely changed the city.

From a collection of small villages, it became a prosperous industrial city. We really like the industrial side of the city, but you can read more about that in the next paragraph.

Discover Strijp S

Strijp-S was once called the forbidden city of Eindhoven, since the former Philips site was not freely accessible to everyone.

Fortunately, this neighborhood is now accessible to everyone because this is a great place to discover! With all the industrial vibes, it feels a bit like you are walking in Berlin.

It is the creative and hip heart of Eindhoven, and here you will find many great shops, galleries, restaurants, boutiques, coffee spots, and street art.

The name Strijp-S originates from Philips. Philips named its industrial parks Strijp. Strijp-S was the first park, and other surrounding industrial parks are called Strijp-T and Strijp-R.

The Trudo Tower

The Trudo Tower (de Trudo Toren) is a new addition to Eindhoven! Architect Stefano Boeri designed the tower, and it is the first vertical forest in the Netherlands. Admire the residential tower and see what we mean!

Het Ketelhuis

A great restaurant with a popular terrace, especially during hot summer days.

Experience Virtual Reality At Enversed

Experience virtual reality at Enversed, Europe’s largest virtual reality center. If you do not know what virtual reality is, we will briefly explain it first. It is a computer technique in which it seems and feels as if you are in another reality.

By putting on special glasses, you shut yourself off from the outside world. Your visible reality is replaced by a computer-generated image through the glasses. Your environment is transformed into a completely different world as soon as you put on the VR glasses.

And this is super fun, for young and old. Because virtual reality allows you to play games with and against each other in a unique way. Shoot bows and arrows with your controllers, be in a kitchen and make burgers together, start a snowball fight or go paragliding and fly over the sea and rocks.

And that’s not for you, there are also VR escape rooms!

You can find Enversed on the 7th floor in the Vreemgebouw in the Strijp-S district.

Discover Strijp R

After Strijp-S, a visit to Strijp-R cannot be missed. Visiting both are top things to do in Eindhoven! Cycle or walk from Strijp-S to Strijp-R! At Strijp-R, you will find two industrial buildings in which you can visit the Piet Hein Eek Imperium.

Piet Hein Eek is one of the most famous Dutch designers. Since 2010, Strijp-R and an old Philips factory have become his empire. Visit the design shop and gallery, browse the furniture workshop, and eat something at the restaurant.

And since 2021, there is also a hotel where we had a wonderful night’s sleep, which we definitely recommend. Of course, you will find Piet Hein Eek’s designs everywhere in the hotel and in the restaurant.

If you visit the Piet Hein Eek Imperium during the week, you can see through the windows how furniture makers are working on unique Piet Hein Eek designs.

Eat At The Down Town Gourmet Market

The Down Town Gourmet Market is one of the best places to eat something in Eindhoven. The indoor food hall can’t be missed on this list of things to do in Eindhoven!

Here you can find all kinds of small restaurants with food from all over the world. Greek street food, Vietnamese spring rolls, Dutch fries, Indonesian rendang, and Turkish snacks; it’s all there.

And also burgers, pasta, sushi, cheese boards, ice cream, and tapas. You can try anything. There are also plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available.

Sit at a table inside or outside, scan the QR code, and order what you want, with your phone. Pay right away, and then the food will be delivered to your table when it’s ready. How convenient, right?

Besides the fact that the food here is very tasty, it is also a super cozy place. And it’s always busy, even when it just opens!

Go To The Van Abbemuseum

Besides the Philips Museum, the Van Abbemuseum is also worth a visit in Eindhoven! The Van Abbemuseum is a museum where you can find modern and contemporary art. It opened in 1936, and it is one of Europe’s leading contemporary art museums.

With different layers, large spaces, and impressive exhibitions, the Van Abbemuseum always manages to surprise us.

The accessibility of the museum is also impressive. We had never seen a museum that makes art available to blind and people with low vision, using Braille and touchable imitation artworks.

The elevator is also quite a (hearing) experience! So be sure to take the elevator up or down.

Spot Eindhoven’s Street Art

More fun (free) things to do in Eindhoven! In Eindhoven, you can spot cool street art in various places throughout the city. As we said before, you can find plenty of street art in Strijp S. But also in many other places.

Along the road opposite the Philips Stadium (where PSV plays), for example, is a wall full of street art, including a portrait of the famous Dutch singer Guus Meeuwis. If you cycle from the station to Strijp-S, you will pass it.

Also fun to visit is the Silly Walks tunnel, the Flying Pins, the Woensel West district, and the Berenkuil. And on the 18 Septemberplein you can also find street art walls near the escalators!

Make sure to take a look at the Blob too, a cool teardrop-shaped building on the square.

Taste ‘Worstenbroodjes’ At Houben

Worstenbroodjes, aka Dutch sausage rolls, cannot be missed during an Eindhoven trip! The sandwiches are a tradition in Brabant and an intangible heritage since 2016. So be sure to eat a sausage roll for a snack when in Eindhoven.

And the best place to do this is at Houben on the Willemstraat. Houben’s sausage rolls are a household name in Eindhoven and the surrounding area.

The Houben family has been making delicious sausage rolls since 1935. And nowadays in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. There are also vegetarian sausage rolls and other special specialties available.

Stop by and try different sausage rolls, or go for a traditional one!

Visit Eindhoven During The Dutch Design Week

The Dutch Design Week (DDW) is Northern Europe’s largest design event. Every year, the design event is held in October and lasts for 9 days. People from all over the Netherlands and beyond come to Eindhoven to see the work of hundreds of designers.

You will find expositions, lectures, debates, exhibitions, network meetings, and other festivities at various locations throughout Eindhoven. An element that returns every year is the graduation show with graduation works by students of the Design Academy Eindhoven.

In 2021, we went to the Dutch Design Week for the first time, and we were very impressed by what we saw! In short, go to Eindhoven in October and visit the Dutch Design Week!

It’s one of the best Eindhoven things to do!

Cycle Through The Roosengaarde Van Gogh Path

Rent a bicycle in Eindhoven and cycle in the evening, when it’s dark, through the Roosengaarde Van Gogh cycle path! This is not just any bicycle path, it is a unique bicycle path that gives light thanks to all the luminous stones. But you can only see this when it’s dark! The darker, the better.

Why do the stones sparkle at night when it is dark? Because of the sunlight which they get during the day, they can sparkle in the evening. So magical!

The cycle path was devised by the artist Daan Roosegaarde and is inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s famous work The Starry Night.

Van Gogh is from the province of Brabant and painted De Aardappeleters in Nuenen, the village next to Eindhoven. The Roosengaarde Van Gogh cycle path is part of the Van Gogh cycle routes that connect the painter’s heritage sites.

Enjoy dinner at Radio Royal

Radio Royaal is a special restaurant in the Strijp-S district. Yes, we have already mentioned Radio Royaal shortly before, but we need to tell you a little more about Radio Royaal. It’s a fantastic place!

When you enter the restaurant, you will be amazed! Radio Royaal is located in the engine room of a former Philips energy house. And inside you can still see many factory elements, for example, the old machines are still there. There are also cool works of art.

The raw industrial location makes it a cool and unique place to eat! And the French-German food is also very tasty.

In short, the perfect spot for dinner in Eindhoven (they are only open in the evening). Make a reservation in advance, because it is often busy here.

Good to know is that Radio Royaal is closed on Sundays and Mondays and for a 3-course dinner you pay 39 euros.

Step Back in Time in The Pre-Historic Village of Eindhoven

The Pre-Historic Village (Het preHistorisch Dorp in Dutch) of Eindhoven is the perfect place to learn about history because this is where a history lesson really comes to life! 6 different eras are covered in the open-air museum.

From the time of the hunters and gatherers, of the first farmers, of the Vikings, of trade and cities, to the Roman era, and the Eighty Years’ War. Experience the past and go on a journey of discovery. Meet historical residents during the discovery tour and learn old crafts!

It is a great place for everyone, and especially for children. The Pre-Historic Village is closed in winter.

Admire the Digital Light Playground Motion

Motion is a large playground with digital lights. The artworks are interactive, so you are part of them! How special!

It’s the perfect place to take fun photos and videos, it’s truly an Instagrammable place! And it is also fabulous for the TikTokers among us. It is a cool fantasy world for young and old to visit and to have fun.

And what is also amazing (and tasty) is Dinner in Motion. They call themselves the most special restaurant in the Netherlands, and we agree. This is one of the most unique meals we’ve ever had.

At Dinner in Motion, you can enjoy delicious food in a 360-degree restaurant. The coolest images appear around you and on your table. It’s a multi-course culinary journey that’s completely tailored to what’s going on around you. This is one of our favorite things to do in Eindhoven!

Motion can be found in the center of Eindhoven in the Piazza.

Shopping in Eindhoven

Do you want to shop in Eindhoven? That’s possible! Eindhoven is a great city for shopping and has a varied range of shops. Plus, every Sunday is shopping Sunday, so the shops are open!

The Rechtestraat and the Demer are two large shopping streets with the most famous shops. But you will actually find many shops, restaurants, and cafés in the entire Emma District, around the Emmasingel.

You can also visit the indoor shopping centers Piazza and De Heuvel for the major, well-known shops!

For specialty shops, small boutiques, specialty stores, and artistic shops, head to Mall Urban Shopper, Kleine Berg, Grote Berg, and Bergstraat.

Drink Coffee at The Best Cafés

Eindhoven has a lot of amazing cafés for coffee! So if you feel like getting a delicious cup of coffee, you should definitely go to one of the cafés that we mention below.

These cannot be missed on our list of things to do in Eindhoven!

Good to know: in the Netherlands, you go to a café for coffee, not to a coffee shop! At a coffee shop, you can get very different things.

BeanBrothers

This is really a hidden gem because if you don’t know this café is there, you will walk right past it! First, you walk through a small corridor to the courtyard, and afterward, you enter an old house where you can drink delicious coffee.

Good to know is that BeanBrothers is only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

You can also drink delicious coffee at Coffeelab. Coffeelab is currently located in two different places in Eindhoven, at Eindhoven central train station and in the Strijp-S district! They are both great and relaxed places to sit.

Sprout Coffee Roasters

Two brothers, who know all about coffee, run Sprout Coffee Roasters. And they may have the best coffee in Eindhoven and the surrounding area.

They have a small café where you can have a coffee and also buy coffee beans to take home. The café is where they do everything from roasting the coffee beans to packing, which is nice to see! Drop by and take a look.

Lucifer Coffee Roasters

As the name suggests, Lucifer Coffee Roasters also roast their own coffee! Here you can also buy coffee beans or sit down for a cup of coffee and something delicious.

And something amazing is that they strive for 100% slave-free coffee at Lucifer Coffee Roasters. So they do everything they can to ensure that the coffee farmer also gets the right reward.

Pinkie Patisserie

At Pinkie Patisserie, they sell the most delicious cakes and other goodies! So if you want to enjoy a cup of coffee with something sweet, Pinkie Patisserie is the place to go.

This place also looks fantastic. Perfect for some photos to post on Instagram.

Discover the Neighborhood Woensel-West

Woensel-West is a neighborhood in the west of the city center which is fun and interesting to visit! It is a working-class neighborhood that has developed in recent years into a colorful and hip neighborhood with great places.

The district used to not have the best image, but that is different today. It is now full of hip hotspots.

The vegan coffee bar and lunchroom Jungle Café, VanAlles&Co, and KEVN are such hip hotspots. And if you are looking for more street art, you will certainly find it in Woensel-West.

Plus the nicest colored houses! Old houses have been replaced by new buildings and show the new image of Woensel-West: hip, colorful, and dynamic.

Volta Galvani is one of those new construction areas that you have to check out. The houses are inspired by Mediterranean Arabic architecture and are very beautiful. In the gatehouse, you can see a moon, which follows the exact cycle of the real moon! The lunar cycle has a central role in Arab culture.

And if you’re looking for even more places to shop in Eindhoven, the Woensel WestSide Stores is an up-and-coming shopping spot in Eindhoven with more than 25 unique stores.

Visit Eindhoven During Glow

What’s a list of the top things to do in Eindhoven without the light festival Glow on it?! We mentioned the Dutch Design Week before, but Glow is also worth a visit.

Every year in November, the festival takes place in Eindhoven, and artists and designers from the Netherlands and abroad show the most beautiful light installations. The city is transformed into a fairytale and large light exhibition.

It is a free event, and every year there is a new theme. Every year there are therefore also different works of art on display.

In 2021, we visited Eindhoven for the first time during Glow, and it was fantastic!

Getting a Drink in Eindhoven

Are you looking for a place to get a drink, after all these Eindhoven activities? Then we have some great tips for you! In Eindhoven, there are plenty of cozy pubs and bars where you can have a delicious drink and go dancing.

The most famous nightlife street in Eindhoven is Stratumseind. This is the perfect place for a pub crawl or a drink. There are more than 50 bars on this street, and with a length of 225 meters (738 feet), Stratumseind is the longest nightlife street in the Netherlands.

How fun is that?! So you can find a place here every day of the week to go dancing and have a drink!

Thomas is a hip place to go, perfect for taking beautiful Instagrammable photos. Next door is Stadscafe Spijker, which is always fun! Fun too on Stratumseind: Karaokebar Ameezing, Bar de Regenboog for the LGBTQ+ community, Café Bar ’t Lempke, and Café Costa.

But there are also great places to go to in the rest of Eindhoven! Rooftop Bar Vane is a bar and restaurant with a view over the city! Fun too: Café Hoogste Tijd, Bobby’s Bar, Berlage Kitchen & Bar, Grand Café Plein 4, Mooi Boules, and 100 Watt Brewery.

And for big parties, go to pop venue De Effenaar and the Klokgebouw in Strijp-S.

Browse the FeelGood Market

We end this list of top things to do in Eindhoven with the FeelGood Market. This market in Strijp-S takes place every 3rd Sunday of the month on the Ketelhuisplein! Check their website first, because sometimes there are exceptions.

At the FeelGood Market you can find sustainable, handmade, and regional products! You can also have a drink here, follow workshops, enjoy live music, get a massage, follow demonstrations, taste snacks, and relax on bean bags.

In short: perfect for a Sunday and a day out in Eindhoven with the whole family. Because there is also a lot to do for children on the market! Many activities are organized so that parents can relax too.

Next to The Happiness Café, you can find Krok Madam, a breakfast restaurant with many sandwiches on the menu. At Krok Madam, it’s always sandwich time!

Meneer de Boer

Perhaps the most popular breakfast spot in Eindhoven: Meneer de Boer. When we wanted to have breakfast here on an early Sunday morning, we had to wait in line to get in.

There are many breakfast options on the menu at Meneer de Boer, there is something for everyone!

We have already talked about the Piet Hein Eek Imperium at Strijp-R, and you can also have a delicious lunch at the restaurant there.

Perfect if you also want to discover the entire empire at the same time. The restaurant feels like you are walking into someone’s cozy living room with cool designs (by Mr Piet Hein Eek himself, of course!). A great spot!

Restaurant Zoet & Zout

Right in the heart of Eindhoven and within walking distance of the train station, you will find the restaurant Zoet & Zout. It is a stylish restaurant with a terrace with many options on the menu.

Zoet & Zout works with daily fresh and seasonal products, enjoy!

This is where design and hospitality come together! Kazerne is a place where you can spend the night , have lunch, dinner, have a drink, and view exhibitions. We visited Kazerne during Dutch Design Week and fell in love with this place.

Located in a monumental military police barrack from 1825, this is a special place to visit! Enjoy the dishes with an Italian touch.

FIFTH is one of the new hotspots in Eindhoven! It is a great and beautiful place in Eindhoven to have lunch or dinner.

Five concepts are central to FIFTh to stimulate all your senses. For example, you hear jazz around you, you see the beautiful decoration of the restaurant, and you taste the tastiest ingredients.

Highly recommended! They also have a bar if you just want a drink!

Looking for a chic restaurant in Eindhoven? Then look no further! 1910 restaurant Eindhoven is a great restaurant in the city.

Pizzeria La Vita è Bella

For the best pizzas in Eindhoven, go to Pizzeria La Vita è Bella! It is a pizzeria with real Italian pizzas in Brooklyn Square, Woensel-West.

They grow their own vegetables and mushrooms on their aquaponic urban farm. The restaurant works with a fresh plant to plate menu, so what you see on the farm is what you eat.

Enjoy a changing 3 or 4-course menu, that changes with the seasons.

We have already said several times that the Strijp-S district is a must-visit in Eindhoven. And the Blue Collar Hotel is located in this neighborhood, how convenient and great!

The hotel can be found in the Klokgebouw, in a former Philips factory. And what’s great is that you can still find many old factory elements in the hotel.

In addition to private rooms, they also have dorm rooms available here, if you’re on a budget! The hotel also has a restaurant and bar with great food and drinks.

The Student Hotel Eindhoven

We always love hotels of The Student Hotel! They are creative, attractive, hip, and relaxed hotels. Don’t be surprised if you see ping pong and pool tables in the common areas. There is always something you can do here. Or relax in the lounge corner!

The Student Hotel Eindhoven is also located in a fantastic location, right in the center and next to the train station! And depending on which floor your room is on, you can also enjoy a beautiful view of Eindhoven.

Hotel Piet Hein Eek

What to do in Eindhoven? Sleeping in Eindhoven’s new addition: the Piet Hein Eek Hotel! The hotel opened in October 2021 and can be found in the Piet Hein Eek Imperium in Strijp-R.

We stayed here for one night and enjoyed it! Of course, you can find designs by Piet Hein Eek himself everywhere in the hotel. You sleep here between art and design.

There are only 13 rooms in the hotel, so book in advance if you also want to spend the night here. In the morning, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast in the living room of the hotel.

Eindhoven is the  shopping city of the South . Whether you like large shop chains or prefer the smaller specialist shops , you will find them all here. And all within walking distance of each other. You can also go shopping seven days a week, because the shops are open every Sunday in Eindhoven! The places to be in the centre are the Rechtestraat  and the  Demer  and the surrounding streets. The main shopping centres are the Heuvel Eindhoven and  Piazza Centre  shopping centres and you can find special small boutiques in De Bergen . Strijp-S  is also a great place for shopping and you will mainly find innovative initiatives and concept stores there such as Urban Shopper ,  Piet Hein Eek  and  Vershal het Veem . I already visited the airport in Eindhoven a couple of times because of cheap flights going there. However, I finally visited the city itself just recently. And I loved it!  

I always regarded  Eindhoven an industrial city of  Philips , a large Dutch technology company coming from this city.   

Well, I cannot say it’s not, but what I can say is that Eindhoven is very diverse and  can offer various attractions and activities  for  every taste .  

Best Places to Visit in Eindhoven  

Before deciding on points of your 1-day itinerary, have a look at the attractions that Eindhoven offers.  

Panasonic Stadium and PSV Museum

A must place to visit for football (soccer) fans is the Panasonic stadium of the PSV football club, one of the best football clubs in the Netherlands. It also has one of the best training schools in the world. It trains great football players and sells them to the richest and most famous clubs in the world.  

Of course, there is also a museum of the  PSV football team  (which was actually founded by the Panasonic company in 1913) that you can visit  6 times a week except for Sunday . You can learn more information on the official  website of the museum .

Campus of Eindhoven Technical University

Universities in the Netherlands are some of the best in the world.

And, the  Technical University in Eindhoven  is regarded as the best technical university in the Netherlands.  

Its campus is located close to the train station, and you can walk there, take a look at the technically advanced labs and observe students hurrying up to their classes.  

Flying Pins  

Between the train station and the TU campus, there is a  sculpture  also worth paying attention to.  Flying pins and  a bowling ball is not only a nice place for a new profile picture, but it is also symbolical.   

The yellow color of the pins represents the blossoming daffodils on the Kennedylaan every spring, and the entire structure reminds of the city dynamics.

Philips  Museum

Another heritage of  Philips  is t he museum of the company. It not only tells the history of the enterprise but also tells how much it influenced the history and growth of Eindhoven and the entire Netherlands.   

It also  contributed to  the healthcare  industry by developing advanced X-Rays and scanning Dutch people for free to diagnose tuberculosis in the times when it was the most common serious disease.  

All around Eindhoven, you can see streets, neighborhoods, and squares named by or in honor of the company that did so much for the city growth.  

The museum  is open from Tuesday to Sunday.

Futuristic Architecture  

The architecture of many parts of Eindhoven reminds most of other Dutch towns and cities. However, there are some modern and futuristic buildings located all around  it .   

They all are used for different purposes: museums,  a conference  center, and even shops. Some of the places to find this kind of architecture is  the  18  Septemberplein . It is a shopping  square  not far from the train station with well-known brands, and some of their shops are located in  peculiar  glass buildings.

Evoluon , t he UFO-like structure on the outskirts of the city is  a conference center  built by Philips in 1966. Since its construction was finished,  Evoluon  became one of the main symbols of the city.  

In general, there are no exhibitions and public access to the building. However, you can visit the restaurant located inside. It is open from Monday to Sunday. For summer holidays, the entire building is closed.

Design  Hotspots  

Eindhoven is often regarded as the design capital of Holland .   

Once you see so many modern buildings in Eindhoven, there should be a background of them and the reason for such a big number of these futuristic constructions. You can learn  more about the Dutch and local design and designers in numerous spots around the city.  

Some of them include  Piet Hein Eek workplace and gallery located on  Halvemaanstraat  30 ,  the world-famous Design Academy on   Emmasingel  14 , and the  Sectie -C  creative area on  Daalakkersweg  16 .

Kruisstraat  

One of the main streets in Eindhoven. Here you can find a wide range of international restaurants, shops and a local touch in the architecture and decoration.  A good place to feel the local vibes.  

St. Catherine  Church  

This neo-gothic Catholic Church located in the city center was finished in 1867.  It was built on the place of another church, and that one on the place of a previous one.   

After archeological discoveries under the church, some  interesting  artifacts have been found. Today, you can see them as exhibits in side the building .  

Dierenrijk  Zoo

If you came to Eindhoven in warm time of the year, not like me, I recommend you visiting  Dierenrijk  Zoo . It is an interactive zoo, where your kids can even play with some of the animals.  

There are also entertainment shows with seals and  elephants .  

The zoo is located outside of the city but you can get there by car or by public transportation.  Geldropsedijk  in  Nuenen  is the closest bus stop to the Zoo, but you need to walk about 3,5 km (2 miles) to get to the Zoo. Look for a route 0900-9292 or check schedule  here .

Strijp -S  District

I found this area by chance, but I really liked it. It looks like a couple of abandoned industrial buildings full of street art, filled with hipster cafes and a skate park.  Later, I found out that it’s one of the coolest areas in Eindhoven called  Strijp -S.  

This place is w orth passing by on the way to  Evoluon  or the Modern Art Museum . But I recommend you also to stop at one of the unusual cafes and restaurants there.  

preHistorisch   Dorp  

To learn more about city  history , you can also visit the museum of Eindhoven  (or  preHistorisch   Dorp ) . Van Abbe  Museum  

If you like modern art, I recommend you to visit the  Van Abbe Contemporary  Art Museum in Eindhoven. It  always has different temporary exhibitions that will be interesting for every modern art conno is seur. Learn more about it  here .

Wings of Liberation  Museum  

The museum is located in a place where the huge and famous military operation called Market Garden took place .

It tells not only about the battle but also about the entire history of this part of Belgium during the Second World War. You can also see the military vehicles used for in the war. Check  the official website of the museum  for more info.

DAF Museum  

T he large DAF trucks are also produced in Eindhoven . If you’re interested in this kind of vehicles, you can vis i t the DAF Museum  showing the production process  with a wide range of models of these trucks, and a history of the company.  

Take into account that in March and April 2019, the museum will be closed due to restoration work. Now, the museum is open from Tuesday till Sunday.

Nightlife in Eindhoven  

Eindhoven is not a large city, and most of the bars, coffeeshops and night clubs are located next to each other on the Stratumseind street and nearby areas. There are about 50 bars and clubs just on this street.

If you are not into parties, the market square is a great area for a relaxed evening with friends, a place to dine and have a beer in a patio.

1-Day Itinerary

It was a list of the main attractions worth mentioning in Eindhoven. Below, you can see my proposed 1-day Eindhoven itinerary. You can change it and add some new ones using this link .

• The campus of Eindhoven University of Technology
• Flying Pins Sculpture
• Kruisstraat . Here, you can also visit the market at the end of the street and try international cuisine in one of the many restaurants and cafes.
• Van Abbe Museum. Some other museums are located nearby, so you can choose the one you’d like to visit the most.
• St. Catherine’s Church.
• Philips museum. Worth spending an hour or two there.
• Philips Stadium and PSV Museum. Attraction every football fan must visit in Eindhoven.
• Strijp-S . Chill in the hipster area before continuing your Eindhoven itinerary. You can visit the modern art museum after that.
• Piet Heen Eek . A great place for modern design lovers.
• Evoluon. An unusual structure that everyone should see in Eindhoven.

Additionally, you can go to the zoo, preHistorisch Dorp or the Wings of Liberation museum which are located a bit outside of the city, so it may be worth staying in Eindhoven for more than one day.

How to Plan a Trip to Eindhoven  

I f you’re planning a trip to Eindhoven, you should go here by plane . Even if you live not very far from it, flying to this city might be a cheaper (and definitely, a more convenient option). I haven’t spent more than 20 euro for a one-way flight to Eindhoven.  

You can check the cheapest and most convenient flights here .  

If not by plane, you can get here by bus or by train. Both bus and train stations are located in the city center (close to each other), which is a convenient location to explore the main attractions of Eindhoven.  

If you arrive at the airport, you have several options to go to the city:  

• Take the bus . 401 bus will take you directly to the train station. The one-way ticket costs about 4,5 euro, and the return one – 8,5. The ride takes just about 20 minutes, as the airport is located close to the city.  You can check the bus schedule here.
• Rent a car . First time I arrived at Eindhoven, we rented a car with friends to start a road trip around Holland.  We didn’t have much time, so we didn’t go to Eindhoven (which I now regret). The car rentals are located just next to the airport, so you can just take your car and be in the city center in less than 10 minutes.   
• Perhaps, the most expensive option is taking a taxi . However, it won’t cost too much, because, as I said, the airport is very close to the city.  

Don’t forget that Eindhoven and the entire Holland is pretty windy and rainy, so you might need to get a windproof umbrella not to get wet.

For convenience, I recommend you to buy a special travel backpack  or a suitcase that fits under the seat in low-cost airlines.

Where to Stay in Eindhoven

Eindhoven has a wide variety of hotels for you to spend a night or two in the city.

Hotels and hostels I can recommend are :

• Backpackers BnB – the only hostel in Eindhoven I could find, and it is far not the best one, but perhaps the most budget version. You can book a bed here.
• Saint Tropez Maison Meerhoven – a luxury house outside of the city center. Great option if you prefer relaxed vacations. Although it is located not in the city center, you can get to the main attractions of Eindhoven in 10 minutes by car. Book your stay here.
• Little Grand – spacious and comfortable apartment in the city center. For people who like comfort, but also not to spend time on getting to the most interesting places in the city. Book it online here
• Crown Inn – stylish hotel in the heart of Eindhoven. Minimalistic, clean, yet very comfortable. Book a room here
• NH Collection Eindhoven Center – my top choice, the most luxury and comfortable option in the city center. It is a 5-star hotel of a well-known international chain of hotels NH Hotel Group. Book your room here .

It was my list of the best things to do in Eindhoven if you have one day or more. As you can see, the city is very interesting to visit at least for a short time. And make sure you don’t wait for your connecting train at the train station .   ?  Have a great trip!

US tourist killed after bull elephant toppled safari vehicle in Zambia

An elderly US tourist was killed and four others hurt when an aggressive bull elephant charged and toppled their safari vehicle during a game drive in Zambia .

The attack at Kafue national park, in which the large pachyderm ran from a wooded area and barreled into the side of the truck, was captured on video and posted to social media by ABC News. It identified the tourist as 79-year-old Gail Mattson of Minnesota.

Keith Vincent, executive director of the safari operator Wilderness, told the network in a statement that the elephant’s charge was unexpected, and the driver had no opportunity to escape.

“Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” he said .

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident.”

Wildlife officials and local police say they are investigating Saturday’s incident, which took place in the national park about 220 miles north-west of Zambia’s capital, Lusaka. Covering almost 8,700 square miles, Kafue is the country’s oldest and largest national park, and is popular with tourists for its abundance and variety of birds and animals.

Wilderness said four other guests in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

Family members of Mattson, who also had a home in Arizona, told Minnesota’s KSTP News that she was “living life” on the game-watching holiday. Photographs of her in a safari truck clutching a flower, taken on the day of her death, accompanied the network’s report.

John Longabauth, a friend from Arizona, told the outlet he would miss her adventurous spirit. “She had told us that this safari was going to be her last big adventure,” he said. “Because her birthday is in the summer, she was going to be 80, she felt like she would start slowing down.”

Zambia’s neighbor Zimbabwe has expressed recent concern at a growing conflict between humans and elephants from a rising elephant population, especially one that is migrating more as the climate crisis disrupts animals’ access to food, water and cover, in Africa and around the world.
