A Day Trip To Rohtang Pass (Everyday Tour By HP Tourism)

Spread the Word!

Located 51 km away from Manali is the Rohtang Pass. A sightseeing tour is organized daily by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) for the public to visit the Rohtang Pass via the Atal Tunnel. It is one of the best budget-friendly packages available and would be perfect for you if you’re traveling solo. We went on this tour and are now here to share our wisdom, knowledge, and everything we picked up on our journey.

Rohtang Pass Tour By Himachal Pradesh Tourism

Table of Contents

Rohtang Pass & Atal Tunnel

Rohtang Pass 13058 feet, Manali

The Rohtang Pass, located at a whopping 3970 m, is a high-altitude mountain pass on the eastern end of the Pir Panjal mountain range that connects the Kullu Valley to the Lauhaul and Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh. This pass is blocked during the winter due to snow making the districts of Lahaul and Spiti inaccessible during these months. This raised a need to build a road tunnel under the pass. The Atal Tunnel was built in October 2020 and has been operational since then, reducing the travel time from 4-6 hours to 30 minutes.

Two-wheelers are not allowed via the Rohtang Pass (however, cars are allowed). Hence, the government undertook the initiative to make the pass accessible to anyone who wished to see it. Scroll down to learn more about the day trip, tour plan, booking, and other details.

Booking is mandatory prior to going through the Rohtang Pass. The booking can either be made in person at the HP Tourism office located next to the Manali bus stand or online . We opted to book the tickets online, and the e-tickets were emailed with the PNR number.

Himachal Pradesh tourism office, Manali

Due to the lower number of bookings, a small van/tempo was arranged for us instead of the usual bus, and the schedules that we had picked earlier became invalid. We were allotted the leftover seats lastly. Another thing to note while booking online is that you can also book the tickets on the same day as your journey, i.e., early in the morning of that day. However, you have the option of booking even two months ahead of time. We would suggest that it is best to book the seats offline in advance by going in person.

HP Tourism Office Contact Number: +91 01902 252116, +91 94182 13024.

Though it was mentioned that the buses would depart at 9.30 AM, it started around 10 AM, and the trip concluded at 5 PM. The bus does wait a couple of minutes in case of late passengers boarding. Both the pickup and drop locations remain at the Manali Bus Stand.

The cost per person for the day tour was INR 700 when the booking was made offline, while it is INR 700 + transaction charges when the booking is made online.

Rental Gears

There are over three hundred shops lined along the highway. The bus would be stopping at one of them, where the driver insists that everyone rent snow gear to keep warm. However, if you’re layered adequately and have your thermals and down-jacket on, you can skip this. Sunglasses and shoes are a must.

Check for the temperature and wind, then decide if you need extra layers. We were sufficiently warm in our layers. We opted to tour during October and did not rent the gear. Both cash and UPI payments are accepted. The costs are as follows. There might be changes due to demand.

  • Shoes – INR 100
  • Dress – INR 250
  • Dungre set – INR 250
  • Overcoat set – INR 200

Also, note that the gears can also be rented near the Rohtang Pass.

Himachal Pradesh tourism, Rohtang Pass

Although the proposed plan was a bit different online , we’ve compiled the tour that we were taken below. The view of the valley down your side and the mountains above will keep you engaged. The zig-zag roads make the journey further interesting.

The driver keeps an eye on all the passengers’ whereabouts. The time given for each pitstop was sufficient. If anyone is late, the driver informs them patiently that the time is up.

At Rahalla Waterfall

Rahalla Waterfalls

It is a pristine cascading waterfall. Avoid climbing on the sloppy, slippery rocks for safety reasons.

Marhi, Rohtang pass tour

Visit the nearby temple. You can also see paragliders doing tandem joy rides for a brief distance. You will not have time for the paragliding adventure, but you can enjoy seeing others.

Embrace the snowy vibes! Folks often indulge in play and ascend to the highest point planted with flags.

Shop at the top of Rohtang pass

At the peak, a makeshift setup offers piping-hot delights like Maggi and bread omelets, which are extra enjoyable in the chilly weather. Snowboarding and quad biking add an element of excitement to the experience. You can see the photographers wander, eager to capture picture-perfect moments for a fee. If you fancy, strike a pose and get those DSLR-worthy shots.

At Atal Tunnel,

Attal Tunnel Rohtang pass, Manali

Take a brief restroom break near the Atal Tunnel entrance. You can click a few cool pictures and head back.

At Solang Valley,

Solang Valley Ski Center

The Solang Valley offers numerous adventure activities, such as skiing (in winter), ropeway, zorbing, paragliding, etc. You can try one at the given time for extra cost.

Important Things To Note

The zig zag roads to Rohtang Pass

  • Eat light as you’ll be traversing a lot of zig-zag roads and gain huge altitude in a short time.
  • Bring enough water and snacks with you, especially if you have kids traveling along with you.
  • If you notice the symptoms of altitude sickness, inform the driver or someone near you.
  • Check for the temperature and wind at Rohtang Pass and layer up accordingly.
  • You should stick to the seats allocated to you. Mixing and matching the seats is not allowed.

For other vehicles visiting Rohtang Pass, a permit is made mandatory. For more details, visit the official website .

Our Thoughts

A private vehicle would cost anywhere between INR 3500 and INR 5000, depending on the car that you choose. Of course, there is more comfort, privacy, and flexibility, but it all comes at a cost. But if you are traveling on a budget, the tour organized by HP Tourism is your best bet. The tour justifies the money that you pay. We did enjoy our time and had a great day with the tour package!

Rohtang Pass, Manali Overview

Located at a distance of just 51 kilometres from Manali, Rohtang Pass can be reached only by road. The pass is located at a massive height of 3978 metres on Manali- Keylong road. When planning a trip to Manali , a day off to the vista point of Rohtang Pass is the ultimate and almost essential attraction of the itinerary.

Owing to its splendid natural beauty, Rohtang Pass is a favourite among the community of film directors. Many blockbusters ranging from 'Jab We Met' to 'Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani' have been shot here. A peculiar fact behind the name of the place is that it was named so because a number of people working in CBRE died whilst trying to cross this treacherous stretch. An experience of the snow can never be complete without a sledge ride, which involves sliding through the snow in a wooden toboggan. Another thrilling activity that can be pursued at Rohtang Pass would be mountain biking where you ride your mountain bikes off the regular course and into the lesser taken routes. It can get a bit rough, so you must take care in case you are planning on pursuing this activity. You can try your hand at skiing and tyre drop at the Rohtang Pass as well, where again you slide down a slope of snow whilst using the appropriate equipment. Gear for all of these activities is available for reasonable rent, so do not miss out on this opportunity.

Must Know Before You Visit Rohtang Pass

Tips : 1. Take a day off for Rohtang. Leave for Rohtang early in the morning, as there are hundreds of others local tourist cabs visiting the pass and the narrow lanes gets jammed with traffic quickly, leaving one to walk up to the main spot. 2. Considering the difficult road, high altitude and low temperature of the area, Rohtang is best visited in daylight. 3. Carry woollens and snacks, if possible pack a thermos of hot tea or coffee too. It would be the most useful up there. 4. When renting snow clothes, compare the prices with those fixed by the government.

rohtang pass one day tour

A trip to Himachal is incomplete without a road trip to the mighty and surreal Rohtang Pass. Located on the east side of the Pir Pranjal Range, the Rohtang Pass lies 50 km    b north of Manali and connects two of the most beautiful valleys of Himachal , Kullu and Lahaul, Spiti valley . Travelling to Rohtang is no cake walk and the name alone translates to “pile of corpses”.This name was assigned to the pass because of the countless lives which were lost when they tried to traverse but despite all the difficulties, Rohtang is one of the most frequented passes during the 6 months when it is open for public.

The pass has never been very difficult to traverse, on foot, as compared to some other passes in the Himalayas. It earned a name for being risky and dangerous because of unpredictable weather, that cause frequent blizzards and snowstorms, posing a life threatening risk to people who try to cross it. This is the reason behind its nomenclature; Rohtang. The route to the pass is thronged with dangers but the reward at the end of the journey is captivating and calming.  Snow capped hills and the cool mountain breeze await and one can almost hear the silence.

Best Time To Visit Rohtang

The Rohtang pass is open for 6 to 7 months of the year through April, May to October and hence, that becomes the only and the best time to visit Rohtang Pass. Travellers can opt for a lot of adventure sports like mountain biking, skiing, snow scooter riding et cetera. During this time the temperature is nearly around 20 to 32 degree Celsius. If one is looking for snow at the pass then the best time would be late April and early May, there are giant walls of snow on either side. Post June, the snow starts to reduce and is found only towards the top of the Pass.

As the year progresses, the snow becomes lesser and by August, there might not even be any snow except for some at Rohtang Top. August will be the worst time to go to Rohtang if one goes for snow viewing. Although after September, the temperature begins to drop again and the amount of snow increases. Monsoon arrives mid July and stays till August and sometimes it causes heavy turbulence in the roads.

The Thrill Along the Way

Rohtang

Rohtang is not a cake walk. The adventure and thrill at Rohtang Pass is unparalleled, as are the risks. Adventurers and bikers reach the Pass by braving slippery roads, the dangerous curves, steep falls and sometimes very turbulent weather conditions. Keeping the rough weather in mind, the Rohtang Pass is closed for public for a major chunk of a year. Rohtang Pass somewhat lies in the inhabitable world that continues to befuddle travellers. Perched at an altitude of 13000 feet, the pass is a gateway to Manali-Leh highway. En route, places like  Rani Nallah  are intimidating obstructions that make the journey dicey. The nallah is situated 6 km before the Pas

s and often tends to irritate the travellers bound for Rohtang.

The most daunting is a 2 km horrifying stretch that’s only muck and slush all the way along. At the beginning of every new season, the road crew has to put themselves out to dig out the road, which goes under the layers of snow. Avalanches and sluggish conditions keep challenging the travellers with new hurdles. The Government of India has started constructing an 8.8 km, two-way tunnel that will go around the Rohtang Pass, thereby creating an alternative link, open all year round, that will be much more convenient and faster. Although there are a lot of difficulties on the way to Rohtang, one cannot deny that the long winding terrains are breathtakingly beautiful. The fall is of a steep thousand plus feet into an abyss but along the mountain passes, one can find many scattered temples and monasteries with multi coloured prayer flags, which when blow, spread a prayer through the air. The roads are barren obviously but the travellers and the very few inhabitants make the place vibrant and full of life. There is no network and the people stop to converse with each other. The cars stop and exchange news and say grace together. It is an actual co-dependent environment of peace.

How To Reach Rohtang

Rohtang

In order to reach Rohtang Pass, one must get to Manali first, there is no other way to reach the Pass otherwise.  Manali can be reached from a lot of different places vis-a-vis Shimla, Delhi and Chandigarh. Rohtang Pass can be reached on a one day trip from Manali. If one is traveling by her/his own vehicle, then Rohtang can easily be a day trip after obtaining a permit from the SDM office in Manali or online. Travelling by public transport is also not a feat because it is no trouble finding a bus going to Manali, considering how it is one of the most visited hill stations of the country. From Manali one can either book or reserve a taxi to get to Rohtang or travel by a HPTDC or HRTC bus.

Places Near Rohtang

There are a lot of beautiful places in the proximity like Solang, Rahala Falls, Chandra & Bhaga and of course, Lahaul and Spiti Valley. There are provisions of engaging in adventure sports like paragliding, snow skiing et cetera and then there is the breath taking natural beauty as well. Chandra & Bhaga is an awe inspiring confluence and the Rahala Falls is a splendid sight at 2500 feet.

These activities and locations can definitely be on the bucket list, since one has to travel so much to reach Rohtang or even to get anywhere close but without these also, the Rohtang Pass should be a must visit, at least once in a lifetime. Some travellers have compared the Pass to  a pilgrimage since the road is abound with hurdles and difficulties but one the Snow Point is reached, it feels like a penance because it is so quiet and serene.

The Ultimate Trip To Rohtang Pass & Sissu by Rohtang Tunnel /Atal Tunnel

(A Day Trip) From Manali to Rohtang pass & Sissu via Atal tunnel

Rohtang Tunnel acknowledged as Atal Tunnel is a highway tunnel constructed at an altitude of above 3,000 meters under the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh. The tunnel is at a height of 3,100 meters (10,171 ft) whereas the Rohtang Pass is at an elevation of 3,978 meters (13,051 ft).

The Atal Tunnel is 9.02 km long and named by the  government after former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It is one of the longest road tunnels in the nation and, the longest highway tunnel above 3,000 meters in the world!

Manali to Rohtang pass via Atal tunnel

Blog Post Content

Slicing through a hill to the west of Rohtang La, the tunnel will shorten the distance between Solang Valley near Manali to Sissu in Lahaul by around 46 km. If driving up to the Pass used to take 2 hours, vehicles will now be able to cross the tunnel in 15 minutes.

It presents all-weather connectivity to the isolated valley of Lahaul-Spiti, which endures cut-off for almost six months during a year as the Rohtang Pass is habitually covered with thick snow between November and April.

The tunnel was constructed using the New Austrian tunneling method and has been outfitted with a semi-transverse ventilation system, where huge fans individually circulate air throughout the tunnel. A 2.25 m tall and 3.6 m wide emergency tunnel has been combined into the tunnel cross-section underneath the chief carriageway for evacuation during crises.

Fires inside the tunnel will be checked in a range of 200 meters and fire hydrants are administered at distinct places throughout the tunnel. The tunnel also possesses a public announcement system to make an important announcement in emergency circumstances for which speakers are installed at frequent intervals.

Since the Atal tunnel is expected to observe heavy traffic and three accidents have already been reported, CCTV cameras are installed at periodic interims in the tunnel which are attached to two monitoring rooms on both ends of the tunnel for vehicular supervision and pollution monitoring. Pollution sensors continuously observe the air quality in the tunnel and if the air quality in the tunnel is under the desired level, fresh air is inserted into the tunnel via two huge fans on each side of the tunnel.

The given limits of the Rohtang tunnel are –

Vehicles number (i) Cars – 3000 Nos. (ii Trucks – 1500 Nos. Design vehicular speed in Tunnel (i) Maximum Speed – 60 km/h (ii) Minimum Speed – 40 km/h

The tunnel lessens the travel time and overall length between Manali and Keylong on the way to Leh.

The route, which previously went through Gramphu, was 116 km (72.1 mi) long and used to take 5 – 6 hours under the best situations.

But now, thanks to the tunnel,

The traveler arrives at the South Portal of the tunnel from Manali, a distance of 24.4 km (15.2 mi) in roughly 50 minutes, works through the 9.02 km (5.6 mi) long tunnel in about 15 minutes and reaches Keylong which is 45 km (28.0 mi) away in nearly 60 minutes. The new route via the tunnel bears down the total distance progressed to 78.42 km (48.7 mi) which can be easily covered in nearly 2 hours. Reducing the distance and time traveled of around 3 – 4 hours as contrasted to the earlier route. Besides, the tunnel skirts most the utmost of the sites that were inclined to road barricades, landslides, etc.

In 2019, The Union Cabinet decided to name the tunnel as ‘Atal Tunnel’ to honor former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his contributions. When Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the Prime Minister, he went to Lahaul and on 3 June 2000 declared that the Rohtang Tunnel would be constructed. The foundation stone was laid by the then chairperson Sonia Gandhi on June 28, 2010.

It has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 3 October 2020.

The cost of the entire project is estimated to INR 3,200 crores than the previous INR 500 crores in 2003. After the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the tunnel would implement new vitality to the country’s border infrastructure.

Before this tunnel construction, the Lahaul Spiti Valley used to be closed off from regular tourists and vehicular transportation due to the bad weather conditions and the wearisome traveling. It is now anticipated to promote tourism and wintertime entertainment in the area. The tunnel is not only significant for citizens but also from the military logistics aspect as it will present more solid connectivity to the armed troops to reaching Ladakh.

rohtang pass one day tour

one day tour starting from manali sterling resort to rohtang pass & return to resort via solang valley. is it possible in a same day? what would be be the fare of cab in such case for a 3 member family? advice us.

' class=

Possible if not stuck in traffic jam on the way to Rohtang. Also if traveling in next few months, check and decide whether its worth to spend so much of time and money to visit the two places when you are not going to find snow.

This post has been removed at the author's request.

Yes it is absolutely possible if you leave between 5-6am from your hotel as more tourists start early to that destination and you don’t stuck in a really bad traffic jam on your way back. A small cab would be good for you alto maybe. I am not sure about the price of the cab but it would be around Rs 1000.

Now a days after introduction of permit (only 800 vehicle) the ca rates to Rohtang are always flying high specially is snow is available at Rohtang and tourist rush.Taxi rates could be as high as 5-6k to even 7-8k.An economical option can be HRTC bus which cost rs 800 per head but wont go to solang.

yes many people does the same

If going for HRTC bus then not possible to visit Solang, most probably you wont get any vehicle if you get midway near solang diversion. No fix time to reach Rohtang, consider 4 hr one side.

The best time to visit Manali is from October to June because if you travel in late June or July, you may have to face rainy days which can spoil your trip. In October, with bright, colorful flowers in full bloom and with temperatures ranging between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius, the climate gives you a pleasant feel. If you want to see snowfall, however, December to February is the best time.

Playground, Manal

Manali becomes a paradise on earth with its snow-clad surroundings and temperatures that hover around zero. Due to landslides and land-blockages, while tourists do visit Manali throughout the year, the monsoon season (July to August) is a bit low in terms of the number of visitors.

A few facts about Manali

Manali is located at a place where three adjacent hills meet. Each hill has an old temple and a village dominating it: Old Dhungri (Hadimba Temple), Manali (Manu Temple) and Vashishtha (Vashisht Temple).

Manali Rooftops

The revered Hindu sage named Manu codified Hindu laws in the Manusmriti, and Manali is named after him. According to the folklore, during a terrible flood, Sage Manu led people to this beautiful mountain and saved several species of animals

Visit Vashisht Temple & Hot Water Springs

What could be better to start your one day in Manali than a temple? Visit the Vashisht Temple because it is said that Vashist was Kula Guru (teacher) of Lord Rama. It is one of the must-visit places in Manali. The village where this beautiful and important religious site is located is also called Vashisht and lies across the River Beas.

In front Vashistha temple, Manali

The hot water spring is one of the most famous attractions around here apart from the temple. People believed that hot springs have medicinal value and cure many skin diseases . To take a dip and rid themselves of skin infections and diseases, many people go to the Vashisht baths. There are also separate baths for men and women here.

Enjoy a memorable evening

After spending the whole day roaming in the city, it would be best to have some rest in the evening. I would suggest spending a few minutes on the bank of the Beas River – the sound of the water hitting the stones will give you an amazing feeling of serenity and take you to another world.

River Beas, Manali

If you want to go shopping for some local delights, you can just take a stroll along the Mall Road . Tibetan artifacts, artificial jewelry, woolen items and many other things (loads of winter stuff) can be bought. You will also find some drummers and guitarists singing folks songs. The crowd gathering here enjoys dancing. Apart from this market, you can also visit the Manu Market near Manu Temple.

What to eat in Manali?

There are lots of dishes and different kinds of street food in Manali you must taste while visiting, even if for one day. Here are some of the best choices:

Babru is a dish that belongs to the family of the age-old Indian snack of kachoris. This dish too is prepared out of using the soaked black gram paste and then kneading it.

If you go Manali and do not taste trout, you will miss out on something very special. After marinating it, the preparation of this fish is done by slow cooking which gives the dish an incredible quality to it. A must-try!

This dish will surely satiate your hunger pangs in the best manner possible if a sweet tooth is your weakness. It is a Himachal version of crepes. This dish is prepared using milk, sugar and wheat flour. It’s a great way to start your day – excellent for breakfast!

This is prepared from lotus stems. It is a kind of dish that owes its distinct flavors to the unique texture of the raw materials. This delectable food is prepared by thinly slicing the lotus stem, steaming it and then sautéing it in a collection of the herbs, spices and gram flour.

  • For accommodation, you can negotiate good deals face to face. So, if possible, don’t book online.
  • Explore Manali just by walking.
  • Things are quite costly here when dining, so eat carefully. Bills can go up to $100 easily.
  • If you are not interested in walking, just hire a bike to cover most of the distant points during your one day in Manali.
