BISTROT TRES TITI-PARISIEN

BON APPETIT & LARGE SOIF

La Rotisserie d'Argent restaurant in Paris

La Rotisserie d’Argent is a classic French bistro serving what might be the best roast chicken in Paris. Located next to the Seine, with outdoor tables overlooking the river, this is a centrally located and crowd-pleasing spot for classics like steak frites, duck confit, steak tartare, and kidneys in mustard sauce (vegetarians should steer clear). There’s a good wine list, as you’d expect from the team behind La Tour d’Argent, and they’re open every day.

Horrible service. Dry unflavored chicken. Overpriced. Will never eat here again … just keeps getting worse. Sadly one of Paris’ gems is no more … they just don’t care.

You’re not alone in this opinion, Joanne – thanks for sharing your experience!

Our first visit several years ago was outstanding: terrific leeks vinaigrette, excellent escargots, etc. Our second last October was horrible: the driest roast chicken ever presented, food served tepid, indifferent service – a major disappointment. So I suspect it is a matter of luck.

We had a 9 pm dinner on Sunday night (1 October). The main dining room is very cute, the street view portion of the dining room is more simple and less decorative. Be aware: our table was underneath the air conditioner vent and had a cool breeze throughout our meal – always bring a sweater.

Delicious entrees, the Oeuf mayonnaise were the best we had on our trip. My cousin informed me that there is a society dedicated to preserving and promoting the humble Oeuf mayonnaise (ASOM Mayo Egg Conservation Association)!

https://www.facebook.com/AssociationSauvegardeOeufMayo/

Escargots had the right amounts of garlic, parsley and butter. One of our better simple entrees over the past two weeks.

This meal was my only experience with roast chicken in Paris. Mine was very good, properly prepared, and not dry. My wife had the coq au vin, which was substandard. Served warm (not really hot) with only a few pieces of dry cut/cubed. Could not determine if this was breast or thigh meat. Either way it seemed reheated, overcooked, and not a good example of this dish.

We had it again the next night at Auberge Bressane who did it right.

Opted to just finish our wine and be satisfied with three-out-of-four good dishes.

That sounds awful, Patricia! Thanks for sharing your experience.

Just had lunch at the Rotisserie today ( Sept 15 2023) and I can say it is definitely NOT the best roast chicken in Paris. I’ve had many in other restaurants/bistros over the last 20 years we’ve been living here and this is not one of them. Dry, overcooked, and expensive. The service was inattentive, our wine arrived eventually after we’d finished eating. The confit de canard was probably the worst I’ve had anywhere (seemed like it had been reheated for too long or many times). What a disappointment. When we called the manager to explain our disappointment, he was dismissive and did not try to make any kind of gesture or apology to remedy our bad experience. NEVER going back. Plus, although not the restaurant’s fault, our table was overrun by wasps, which in the end meant I could not finish my chicken (ordinary though it was). On the positive side, the oeufs mayonnaise were very good and the purée also good.

Hi Virginia! No, it’s not limited to Sundays.

Looks amazing! Do they only serve roast chicken on Sundays?

La Rôtisserie d'Argent

Notes et avis, emplacement et coordonnées.

Endroit très chaleureux, et repas excellent, Service au top et prix abordable pour la qualité du dîner . J’ai passer un très bon moment 👌

rotisserie tour d'argent paris

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

For our Sunday night dinner this time we called ahead and reserved a duck. (The table next to us was served one too, the last, without reserving). It was good, but a rotisserie duck is not the same, and to my taste, not in the... same league as a traditional roast duck with orange or cherry sauce carved tableside, memories of which represent the quintessential French meals (in New York and Paris) of my high school (NYC) and college years. Now pretty much unavailable in either city, in favor of (invariably inferior) sautéed duck breast (magret) sliced and fanned over plate. A concession to cost, prep time, skill level in the kitchen and on the part of front of the house staff now without carving skills. Still, we got our duck. Surprisingly, on our normal Sunday night, a large banquet style birthday party for a well-dressed French group, plus more Americans than we had seen anywhere on this off season November trip. More

This is the second time I have been to this restaurant over the years - both times with a child (age 5 and 13) and have found it very enjoyable both times. It is easy to make a reservation online and in a good location... near Notre Dame, Latin Quarter or Saint Germain. On this occasion, I shared lamb with my husband and my 13 year old had roast duck and escargot. She loves escargot and I would say the ones here are the best I have ever tasted - the waiter also said that was true! The lamb was fantastic and the vegetables were cooked superbly. The wine suggestion was spot on too! We shared dessert and the selection of pastries and cake was diverse and tasty. I shall return again in the future! More

We were so looking forward to eating at this highly rated restaurant for my husband’s birthday and wonder if we were stooges. I started with a glass of Beaujolais and my husband had a cola. We also asked for a large bottle of water with... gas. They fill empty bottles from a bar fountain. Husband ordered a crab avocado salad to start. It looked like it was left over (maybe from lunch or the night before) I had the unimaginative burrata. A bowl of cheese with 2 croutons. We both ordered the 1/2 chicken. This was the really annoying part. Potatoes come to our table (before the chicken) that are barely warm. We are the only table as we arrived slightly early for our reservation. The large kitchen staff is standing around joking and they still can’t time our food. to be hot and served together. Then several minutes later (after we are staring at our potatoes) our “busman” in a dirty apron brings out the chicken and plates it. The chicken also seems like it’s left from the lunch service. Barely warm, soggy chicken. (Seriously a grocery store rotisserie chicken is better) We really felt like we received the leftovers. Even our bread looked like they grabbed the scraps from the kitchen. The restaurant started to fill up and it seemed like the newly arrived patrons were receiving freshly made food. The menu was put on our table again and we are asked if we want dessert but based on all we had just experienced we cut our losses, paid and left. A very basic dinner for 112.€ Maybe we were just the unfortunate table but we really can’t understand how this place gets such high marks, when there are so many better places to eat in Paris. More

Seating, very close to one another, small tables, hard chairs Service, very chaotic, waiters forgetting things… one hour after order the first dish arrived, no excuses. And only 25 procent of the restaurant was occupied. Housewine, expensive and very bad… rip off Food, rotisserie chicken... very dry… again a lot of money for poor quality Not worth visiting. More

I enjoyed dining at La Rotisserie D’Argent on a number of occasions before the pandemic hit. Any doubt that things may have changed after 2 1/2 years in a world turned upside down vanished after a recent visit to Paris. Three friends and I had... a particularly lovely and leisurely lunch. Everything was prepared with care and accompanied by efficient, friendly, and attentive service. La Rotisserie’s oeuf mayo are award winning and it's easy to see why. Sublime in taste with an eye-catching presentation, these are a modern take on a revered French culinary classic. For the main course, a large, beautifully seared and succulent pork chop (a special) commanded my attention, while my friends found enjoyment in their sea bream (another special), duck breast, and a silky pumpkin veloute. For dessert, I luxuriated over pecan crème surrounding a luscious caramel center, all nestled between two clouds of choux (this was from the adjacent Boulangerie de la Tour). My friend’s house dessert was a stunningly smooth crème brulee. With its window side tables and a Left Bank location along the Seine (ideal for a post-lunch or dinner stroll), dining at La Rotisserie D’Argent is one of the pleasures of being in Paris. While La Rotisserie may be the little sister of the renown La Tour D’Argent, famous for its duck and a commanding view of Notre Dame, my friends and I found nothing diminutive about La Rotisserie’s food or service. More

Informed my waiter that the chicken (which is what they want to be known for) was dry and overcooked. Not only did he not acknowledge or apologize, he got demonstrably obnoxious afterwards. I informed the maitre d who told me I wasn’t the first to... complain about the overcooked chicken and that he has been having complaints about the waiter too. Didn’t adjust the bill though. Please pick one of the other ten thousand restaurants in Paris. More

Good brasserie food. The so-called "world's best oeuf mayonnaise" was at best a mediocre dish. Go for their other starters. Roast chicken was fantastic, juicy and moist. The service - while not unfriendly - took some time to warm up but was helpful and polite.

Having fond memories of La Tour d’Argent my family were anticipating a wonderful night in its “little sister” La Rotisserie. How disappointing! We thoroughly enjoyed our meals but the service was amazingly poor. From a grumpy welcome, to meals served in stages and not together,... without accompanying wine, water and bread (all having to be requested). In summary we felt ignored. After a complaint we were told that they had run out of clean glasses - this was the reason for the poor service and unfrIendly welcome. Unbelievable of a restaurant part of a group with such high status. In compensation we were offered a digestive - but this did not recompense for such an unwelcoming experience. Our memories of a fabulous experience at La Tour sustain us but we will never return to La Rotisserie. More

I came here on my last night of a weeklong trip to Paris. I would walk by the place every day and thought it may be a tourist trap since it was right on the Seine and prices were a bit more than other restaurants... in the area that didn’t have a view of the Seine. The food was really good and portions (both for entrees and plats) were the largest in my week long trip. The tomato and mozzarella appetizers was the best I ever had and you could tell the the chef really sources the best tomatoes he could find. The duck was amazing as well. Definitely recommend this place! More

We've visited this restaurant on several previous occasions, and have always had a pleasant experience and delicious food in an informal setting. We booked for New Year's Eve because we thought it would be a nice place to celebrate the occasion. We were told in... advance that there would be a set menu at 89 euros, but we assumed that the food and the welcome would still be outstanding - we were wrong. The head waiter was unwelcoming and dismissive - our young waitress was charming but untrained. The food was disgraceful, there were no side dishes available, and the desserts were from a patisserie. It was rushed, uncomfortable, unfriendly and unappetising and we felt ripped off. We will not be returning, More

I’ve read about their chicken plate and their eggs mayonnaise and some friends said the restaurant was a must visit in Paris. In the first few hours in the city we went there. We done the reservation for 2pm and when I arrived in the... restaurant (before 2pm) the waiter told us he wasn’t sure they would serve us. The manager wasn’t more friendly than the waiter. We sat outside where the service was just ok. The eggs are very good, but the chicken was a disappointment, absolutely nothing special. Steak tartare was good. On the next days in the city I could feel how Parisians have improved emphatically and are being really friendly, on the other have, it sounds to me Rotisserie staff are stuck in the 90s in terms of hospitality. More

rotisserie tour d'argent paris

I was very excited for our lunch at Rotisserie Tour D’argent. I’ve heard wound things about this Paris institution. We had a 1 PM reservation and the restaurant was only 1/4 full. We were seated and then waited at least 10 minutes for the waiter... to take our order. We ordered six escargot, the fish of the day, the lamb, and a half bottle of wine. We do not speak fluent French, so I pointed to everything on the menu as I said it, and the waiter wrote things down. We never got our escargot. The entrees arrived and were very tasty, but my lamb was more than half fat. The sauce was excellent, and hubby enjoyed his fish. When we mentioned that we never got the escargot the waiter seemed confused and said it must have been because he was tired. When we asked where the rest of our bottle of wine was he seemed confused about that too. So they brought out more wine. Then our original waiter disappeared and we finally were able to get the check and leave. Thankfully we weren’t charged for the escargot we never got. For a place that has been around for so long and supposedly prides themselves on their high level of food and service, it was extremely disappointing. There are plenty of other places you can eat in Paris for less. More

We were greeted warmly and seated at a window table, which provided for great people-watching. But there were no wines by the glass, my husband’s lamb was tough, my chicken was stringy, and we noticed two diners nearby struggling to slice their beef. Plus, their... French fries were as pale as could be. For my part, I suspected that my mashed potatoes were packaged. Also, our server was expected to handle too many tables during a busy dinner hour. This was not fair to her or to her customers. We watched as her initial warm smile faded under great stress. So we were ready to leave without coffee and dessert. But no…we waited about 45 minutes for a check before receiving the explanation that the machine…some vital machine…was broken, requiring the manager to write and calculate checks by hand. Finally we left a small tip for the server, handed the manager cash that we thought covered our never-seen check, and left…never to return. More

I have been to La Rotisserie several times and have had wonderful meals in the past so wanted to experience the restaurant again as it was once a favorite of mine. Sadly, it is not the same as it used to be as the menu... has been greatly cut back to about a third of the dishes that they used to offer, the food was mediocre and the service was very much lacking. We had the roast chicken which was very bland and dried out and tasteless. Our waiter also disappeared after taking our order, but another waiter was apologetic for his colleague's absence and tried to take care of us along with his many other customers. As we had a table on the sidewalk along the Seine with a view of Isle Cite and the weather was glorious, it kind of made up for the mediocre food and service. But sadly, we will not return. More

Just across the street from the 3-Star Tour D'Argent is a rotisserie chicken joint. The drill is simple: Order the half-chicken with frites instead of potato puree. Huge portions, good prices, and a wine list featuring bottles from across the street. As befits a restaurant... with a great pedigree, the service is swift and very professional. More

La rotisserie d’argent.

2 star rating

This sister brasserie of the gastronomique Tour d’Argent serves some of the best half chickens in town–juicy and garlicky with piles of mashed potato. There are other birds too, namely pigeon and duck, with sides ranging from spinach and candied onions to delicious, crispy fries.  Dessert-wise, expect creamy Île flottante (meringue floating in custard cream) or a classic, vanilla-infused crème brûlée. The wine list is ample. A personal fave is the 2020 Morgon Tradition by Domaine des Améthystes in the Beaujolais region, a light, lively red with notes of red fruits (42€).

The rôtisserie of la Tour d'Argent terrace

The rotisserie of the Tour d'argent in Paris

The venue: Calling all lovers of accessible luxury! If you have always dreamed of trying the legendary duck from La  Tour d'Argent , you will love La Rôtisserie, the "little brother" of the Michelin-starred restaurant that serves exceptional products in a more affordable version. The highlight? Its terrace that seems to float above the Seine as it is located right on the edge of the bridge facing Île Saint-Louis , with its red and white checkered tablecloths and its always picturesque retro atmosphere.

On the menu: The menu is proudly indulgent and not very vegetarian-friendly. For starters, you can enjoy  duck foie gras with red port and pear chutney (€32) or  Burgundy snails with pastis-infused parsley butter (€15 for 6 pieces). For the main course, options include  half-roasted farm chicken with poultry jus, roasted garlic, and mashed potatoes (€28),  beef fillet with béarnaise sauce , chimichurri, and matchstick potatoes (€47), or  duck leg with bay leaf, baby potatoes, and caramelized onions (€29). If you have room for dessert, the  chocolate mousse is magical (€10), as is the Bourbon vanilla cream (€12).

La Rôtisserie de la Tour d'Argent is open every day from 12pm to 2:15pm and from 7pm to 10:30pm. Located at 19 Quai de la Tournelle, Paris 5th. © Géraldine Martens

EXPERT TIPS BY: Paige Donner Former Contributor

  • Waterfront Dining : "For your first visit to this bistro, stick with the classics and signature dishes. That means have a taste of the roast duck and the crab stuffed devilled eggs. The wine cellar at the sister ship (La Tour d'Argent) is ranked one of the best in the. So even the wines by the glass here will be excellent choices for whatever you order. Sides are fun and are meant to be shared. A simple tapenade and country style bread is your pre-appetizer for whetting the palate as you peruse the menu."
  • Best for Waterfront Dining Because: During the warmer months, outdoor terrace dining here means looking out over the Seine onto the Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris and the Ile Saint-Louis.

Michelin guide’s point of view.

Established in 1582, this elegant restaurant on the banks of the Seine gained a new floor in the early 20C, and with it one of the best views of Paris's emblematic river and Notre Dame! Tour d'Argent has continued to move with the times: on the ground floor is the Bar des Maillets d'Argent – which harks back to 1930s Britain – with its snack menu and daily specials. The restaurant menu, revamped by chef and Meilleur Ouvrier de France Yannick Franques, draws on the neo-Classical heritage of several decades of French haute cuisine (with a particular emphasis on sauces); the perfectly honed service is as spectacular as ever. As for the extraordinary wine cellar, it is home to over 300 000 bottles. Above the restaurant, a new roof terrace is the ideal spot for a cocktail on a weekday evening or weekend afternoon.

rotisserie tour d'argent paris

For three generations, the Terrail family has looked after this exceptional heritage, with the aim of passing on and reinventing an inimitable savoir-faire: the Art of Entertaining of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

rotisserie tour d'argent paris

2006 — today

André Terrail, the grandfather of the current owner, bought the Tour d'Argent from Frédéric Delair in 1914 and made Adolphe Dugléré's recipes and the rare bottles of Café Anglais part of his legend.

A tireless entrepreneur, the tour d'argent joins the collection of his many establishments, including san régis, georges v in paris, escargot montorgueil and potel & chabot. in 1947, andré terrail handed over the reins of the tour d'argent to his son, claude. under his leadership, the tour d'argent opened a second restaurant in tokyo, celebrated its 400th anniversary, and underwent a number of changes, keeping it at the very top of world gastronomy., a visionary entrepreneur and leader of men, history will remember him as a great maître de maison whose favourite maxim was: "there is nothing more serious than pleasure". passed away in 2006, his son andré is now carrying on the history of our great house. he joined the family business in 2003 and took over from his father in 2006. andré thus began a new chapter in the illustrious history of la tour. while meeting the expectations of a demanding clientele, he is committed to developing the company while respecting its heritage, and relies on a team of top professionals to embrace the spirit of the time., a unique historical heritage.

On the banks of the Seine

On the banks of the Seine

The first forks, the tower coat of arms, exceptional food and drink, lecoq, first chef of the tour d'argent ... and of napoleon, the three emperors' dinner, frédéric delair & the numbered duckling, le café anglais, a new decor, the tower rises, andré terrail, a legacy looking to the future.

Under Henry III, opposite the wine port and just past the Porte Saint-Bernard, a certain Rourteau opened an elegant inn that welcomed the King’s lords. The adjacent Château de la Tournelle, built of silvery Champagne stone, gave its name to the establishment, which became known as the Hostellerie de la Tour d’Argent.

16 th century

Already used in some Italian homes, the fork made its appearance in France at the Tour d’Argent. In order not to stain the immaculate strawberry that fashion imposed on the necks of gentlemen, Henri IV inaugurated this utensil at a dinner that caused quite a stir in Paris. From then on, the Tour d’Argent became the place to be, and Henri IV regularly came there to enjoy “La Poule d’Afrique ou l’Anguille des Bois” and “thick slices of heron pâté”.

18 th century

It was this same Henry IV who granted the Tour d’Argent the honour of bearing arms, and until the reign of Louis XIV the coat of arms “Cuisinier – Oyer – traiteur” could be seen above the hostelry door. The restaurant’s arms were: “Argent a plate covered with Sable between three wreaths of ivy and Vert”, while those of the hostelry were “a Tower Argent embattled on a field of Gules”.

From the time of Cardinal de Richelieu to the French Revolution, La Tour d’Argent remained the place for fine dinners. Legend has it that the Duke of Richelieu, the Cardinal’s nephew, hosted a dinner for forty people over a menu consisting entirely of beef prepared in thirty different ways! It was at the end of this meal that coffee cups first appeared. Excellent chocolate was also served at the Tour d’Argent. In a letter written in 1671, Madame de Sévigné wrote to her daughter that she enjoyed her chocolate every day on the Quai de la Tournelle.

With the revolutionary turmoil behind him, Lecoq, the imperial chef, rebuilt the Tour d’Argent restaurant. The restaurant once again became a venue for famous gourmets such as the Duc de Morny and the Countess Le Hon, the Lady of the Camellias and Lord Seymour.

It was in 1867, at the time of the Paris Universal Exhibition, that the Café Anglais reached its apogee. Just imagine! Alexander II, Tsar of all the Russias, the Tsarevitch and future Alexander III, William I, King of Prussia and future Emperor, as well as Prince Otto von Bismarck gathered at the same table. For these exceptional guests, Chef Dugléré will be preparing an exceptional menu comprising five starters, six main courses and four desserts.

For nearly seventy years, La Tour d’Argent has been supplied of its precious ducks by Burgaud in Chalans, Vendée, recognised as a “quality artisan producer” by the Collège Culinaire de France.

In 1911, on the eve of the First World War, André Terrail bought the Tour d’Argent. By marrying the daughter of Claudius Burdel, then owner of the Café Anglais, he brought together the gastronomic heritage of Frédéric and that of the no less illustrious Adolphe Dugléré, chef at the Café Anglais, no less than the most popular Parisian establishment of the Second Empire.

Before 1936, the Tour d’Argent restaurant, then on the ground floor, was covered in wood panelling. A sumptuous wrought-iron gate marked the new entrance, moved from 15 quai de la Tournelle to 17, at the corner of quai de la Tournelle and rue du Cardinal Lemoine.

You can imagine the architectural prodigies that had to be deployed to build the now-famous grand hall on steel blocks, the weight of which the main building would not have been able to support. At first, it was an open terrace, which was then covered with tarpaulins, and then with huge bay windows. Little by little, the Tower took on the unique structure it has retained ever since: the second dining room was opened up, the kitchens moved to the sixth floor, a slightly larger lift was installed, and the Tour d’Argent, with its breathtaking view of Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral and its islands, was born!

In 1947, André Terrail handed over the reins of the Tour d’Argent to his son, Claude. Under his leadership, the Tour d’Argent opened a second restaurant in Tokyo, celebrated its 400th anniversary, and underwent a number of changes to maintain its position at the very highest level of world gastronomy. A visionary entrepreneur and leader of men, history will remember him as a great Maître de Maison whose favourite maxim was: “There is nothing more serious than pleasure”. His son, André, who took over at his father’s death in 2006, continues the history of this great household.

The Tour d’Argent is not a museum but a theatre – Claude Terrail understood this perfectly – and for André Terrail, the challenge is to pass on the family heritage with an eye to the future. In 2022, buoyed by his initial successes and surrounded by a team of enthusiasts, André Terrail dared to take the boldest gamble since the 1936 renovation by his grandfather of the same name, who took the restaurant up to the 6th floor. At the end of a titanic worksite lasting more than a year and led by architect Franklin Azzi, La Tour d’Argent reopens its doors in August 2023 to unveil a revamped restaurant as well as completely new, tailor-made spaces. These immersive experiences, from the ground floor to the roof of the Tower, have been thought out down to the last detail by André Terrail, captain of the ship, who is thus brilliantly ushering La Tour d’Argent into a new century where the excellence, generosity and modernity of the House shine together in the Parisian sky.
