Overview of JetBlue

JetBlue services flights to over 100 destinations across the world, with many of them being located in North America, South America, and Central America. If you are interested in going to South America, popular options include countries such as Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, while for Central America, you can choose from Belize, Panama, and Costa Rica.

Depending on how luxurious you would like your travel experience to be, JetBlue has four classes to choose from, referred to as Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Flex, and Mint. While Blue is most similar to standard economy, Blue Plus will allow you to check one bag for free. Blue Flex provides two free checked bags and access to expedited security, while Mint offers the most services, including early boarding, free dining options, and lie-down seats.

This airline has 3 different types of aircrafts and over 250 individual planes, with the primary brands being Airbus and Embraer. Each plane has a unique tailfin design, with many of them related to New York, a city that is known for being the company’s headquarters and primary hub. Considered to be the airline’s most commonly flown plane, the Airbus A321 has the longest fuselage and can fit up to 159 passengers, making it convenient for long haul flights.

To help operate their flights as smoothly as possible, JetBlue has created partnerships with a number of other airlines, such as Aer Lingus, Lufthansa, American Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic. Additionally, the company has codeshare agreements with upwards of 20 companies, with some examples being Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, and TAP Air Portugal.

What is a round-trip flight?

What is a one-way flight, when booking cash tickets, when redeeming points and miles, consider booking open-jaw flights.

Are round-trip flights cheaper? The short answer is that it depends . Where you’re traveling to and if you’re paying with cash or miles are the biggest factors in the equation.

For instance, if you’re traveling between the U.S. and Europe and paying in cash, it's cheaper to book a round-trip flight. But if you’re paying for that same flight with miles, the price of two one-way tickets will most often be the same as a round-trip flight (though the taxes paid may vary).

There are other considerations besides just price when comparing round-trip versus one-way flights. Travelers might be surprised to find that booking a round-trip award flight could lead to issues if you have a change in plans mid-trip.

Here's a look at options to weigh when booking round-trip versus one-way flights and answers to some frequently asked questions.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

When you book a round-trip flight, it means you travel from Destination A to Destination B and you return back to Destination A from Destination B. Both flights are booked as one ticket.

So when you’re purchasing the ticket, you select your origin, destination, departure and return date. You make one payment, whether it's with cash or miles.

» Learn more: How to book a flight

A one-way flight, in contrast, is a ticket booked with no return. So you’re only booking a flight from Destination A to Destination B. You can purchase a second, separate ticket from Destination B back to Destination A (should you so choose). One-way flights can be booked with cash or miles.

These types of flights are a good option for those who don’t know their return date, are only traveling in one direction or booking an open-jaw itinerary .

» Learn more: The best days to book a flight and when to fly

When booking flights paid in cash, our recommendation is pretty simple: Book the option that's cheapest for your trip. If a round-trip flight is cheaper than two one-way flights, there's no reason to book two one-way flights.

If two one-way flights are the same price as a round-trip, it might make sense to book the one-way flight (as long as you don’t mind keeping track of the two separate reservations). Even though many airlines have eliminated change fees , it's much easier to change — or even cancel — a flight when there’s only one flight on the reservation to make a change to.

If you’re flying domestically in the U.S., the cost of two one-way flights will usually be the same as a round trip; however, when flying internationally, it can be much more expensive to book two one-way tickets.

Sample flight within the U.S.

In this example flight search on American Airlines , booking two one-way tickets from Newark to Miami will cost $154 for the outgoing flight and $124 for the return, for a total of $278.

Outgoing flight

Return flight

round trip flights jetblue

If you were to book these two flights as a round-trip ticket, the price would be exactly the same at $278.

Sample international flight

It's a different ball game with international flights.

Take a look at this flight search from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt, Germany, on United Airlines . If you were to book the flights as two one-way tickets, it would cost you $3,110.

round trip flights jetblue

However, if you book these same flights as part of a round-trip ticket, you’d have to pay $1,783, representing a significant savings over booking two one-way flights.

» Learn more: Should I be loyal to a single airline?

If you're planning on using points and miles to book award flights, you have a different set of factors to consider. In the case of award travel, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award.

Two one-way awards offer more flexibility

Most U.S. airlines have dropped change fees on both award and paid flights. So, if the price is the same, consider booking two one-way awards instead of a round-trip award to gain extra flexibility. Keep in mind that if you book a round trip, depending on the airline, you may have difficulty getting your miles redeposited if you need to change your award ticket after taking the first leg of the flight.

For example, if you cancel a United award flight midtrip, you'll retain the miles as a future flight credit. While the miles won't be refunded to your account, you'll have the chance to use them in the future.

Watch for higher taxes and fees when booking two one-way awards

When considering whether to book round-trip versus one-way awards, it's important to price out both options — particularly when flying overseas. Some airlines charge higher taxes and fees for awards that originate in certain regions of the world.

Delta SkyMiles is infamous for charging higher fees for award flights that originate in Europe. Also, particularly for international flights, Delta will often price round-trip award flights at less than the cost of two one-way awards.

For example, take a round-trip award from New York to Paris. Delta charges 50,000 SkyMiles plus $85 in taxes and fees for a round-trip main cabin award.

round trip flights jetblue

However, if you book the same flights as two one-way awards, you'll pay a total of 74,000 SkyMiles plus roughly $220 in taxes and fees. The outbound award costs 37,000 miles plus $6 in taxes and fees. Then, you'll need to pay another 37,000 SkyMiles plus around $220 to fly home.

In a situation like this, it makes sense to book a round-trip award. You'll save on miles and out-of-pocket costs.

Consider change fees on award flights

Most U.S. airlines have eliminated change fees on both paid flights and award tickets. However, that's not the case with all mileage programs. If you're booking through a mileage program that charges change fees, you may want to book a round-trip award to reduce the fees you could pay if you need to cancel the trip.

» Learn more: Booking flights with points or miles expands refund option

Say you're considering flying to Europe to take a cruise from Budapest to Munich. One might assume that your only options are to:

Book a round-trip flight into one of the cities plus book a one-way intra-Europe flight between them.

Book two one-way flights — one-way into Budapest and one-way back from Munich.

However, there's a third option: booking an "open-jaw" flight . Many airlines will let you book a flight into Budapest and a flight back from Munich on the same ticket. Rather than pricing these flights as two one-way flights, the airline generally prices the flights similar to a round-trip.

» Learn more: The guide to open-jaw flights with Chase points

If you're using airline miles to book these flights, check to see if it's cheaper to book two one-way awards or an open-jaw award. As outlined in the Delta example above, award flights originating in Europe can have much higher taxes and fees. So it might make sense to book the two award segments together as a multicity award.

In the past, airlines charged more for booking two one-way flights rather than a round-trip on the same route. However, this isn't the case anymore on most domestic flights and even some international flights — mostly thanks to competition from low-cost carriers.

In short, airlines charge more for one-way flights on the routes when they can get away with doing so. If only one airline is operating a particular route, it might increase the price of one-way flights to generate more revenue from business travelers and others that are willing to pay more for the nonstop flight.

However, when there's competition from other airlines, the cost of one-way flights often drops to compete with the other airlines serving that route.

Booking a round-trip flight can be cheaper than booking one-way tickets on the same flights. Before booking two one-way flights, check the round-trip price to see if it's cheaper. Even if you're flying out of a different city than you're flying into, booking a so-called "open-jaw" flight could be much cheaper than booking two one-way flights.

Most U.S. airline loyalty programs will charge the same number of miles whether you book round-trip or two one-way flights. Because of this, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award to get flexibility in case you need to change or cancel plans.

However, this isn't always the case. Some loyalty programs — such as Delta — charge fewer miles for booking a round-trip award instead of two one-way flights. We recommend pricing out award flights both ways just to be sure.

will charge the same number of miles whether you book round-trip or two one-way flights. Because of this, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award to get flexibility in case you need to change or cancel plans.

JetBlue’s Paris Flights Just Went on Sale From $479 Round Trip

The low-cost carrier’s new u.s.-paris route has officially opened up for bookings with service kicking off in june. (covertly heads to jetblue site to browse flights while pretending to be very busy with work.).

For those who have been procrastinating booking summer travel to Europe because of soaring international airfares, you can now breathe a sigh of relief, and say, non, je ne regrette rien —thanks to JetBlue Airways . After announcing in November that a new transatlantic route from New York to Paris was in the works, the low-cost carrier has officially put those flights on sale, and they are now available to be booked on the JetBlue website and app.

JetBlue’s daily service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) will begin on June 29, 2023, with introductory economy fares starting at $479 round trip, and Mint class seats (JetBlue’s version of business) starting at $1,899 round trip.

JetBlue flight 1407 will depart JFK daily at 5:09 p.m. local time and land at CDG the following day at 6:55 a.m. local time, and return flight 1408 will depart CDG at 8:55 a.m. local time and arrive at JFK at 11:51 a.m. local time.

The carrier is crossing the Atlantic using a fleet of Airbus A321 LR (long-range) planes, narrow-body aircraft that can fly longer and farther than previous iterations of the model. For transatlantic flights, the planes are configured with 114 coach seats, some with extra legroom, and an expanded 24-seat Mint premium class—JetBlue’s version of business class with lie-flat seats—including two rows of “Mint Studio” seating, featuring 22-inch TVs, added storage, and a seat and table for a guest. This year, the airline will begin taking delivery of the very latest version, the A321 XLR, which, as the moniker suggests, can fly even farther nonstop—up to about 5,400 miles, or 1,000 miles more than the 737 and other single-aisle models.

JetBlue prides itself on offering some unique on-board amenities, such as free, unlimited, high-speed Wi-Fi on all flights, a promise that extends to international service. In addition, the carrier’s aircraft feature seatback screens that stream live TV and movies, including a selection of French films for the Paris service.

When it comes to food, JetBlue aims to impress with a partnership forged with New York–based farm-to-table, vegetable-forward restaurant group Dig to create seasonal menus for all classes of service. A “pantry” on JetBlue flights offers complimentary self-serve snacks.

For the Paris flights, JetBlue “will introduce elements of French flair into the menu,” JetBlue’s president and COO Joanna Geraghty tells AFAR. Said menu is still in development and will be finalized closer to the route launch.

Where to next? JetBlue is eyeing additional Europe destinations

The new Paris flights will join JetBlue’s only other transatlantic route—New York to London—but more Europe gateways are likely to be added to the JetBlue roster, with Amsterdam topping the list of likely next stops.

Says Geraghty, “We’re dreaming about Amsterdam. We really would like to get in there. It’s a constrained airport that’s slot controlled [and] that’s dominated by legacy carriers, and we’d like to continue to be that disruptor that comes in and serves the customers in those communities with a better experience at low fares.”

All the “big 3” U.S. airlines have formal partnerships with European carriers to provide more seamless connections between the continents. American Airlines is part of the oneworld Alliance, which includes British Airways, and Delta Air Lines is partnered with Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic for transatlantic flights. United Airlines is part of the Star Alliance network, which includes the airlines Lufthansa, Austrian, and TAP Air Portugal.

JetBlue will be strengthening its efforts to compete with them with the launch of nonstop service between New York and Paris, after which it will add nonstop service between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and CDG—although no precise time frame has been provided for the Boston flights.

JetBlue first entered the transatlantic market in August 2021 when it snapped up slots at London Heathrow that had temporarily opened up as travel halted during the pandemic. Last summer, the airline successfully sought permission to make the slots more permanent. And on October 29, JetBlue added a second daily flight between New York’s JFK and London Gatwick (where it started service later in 2021), bringing the number of frequencies between New York and London to three flights per day. JetBlue flights from Boston to Gatwick kicked off in August, followed by Boston to Heathrow flights in September.

While JetBlue might be one of the most recognized low-cost carriers crossing the pond from the United States, it certainly isn’t alone in the burgeoning travel segment. Several newer players have entered the low-cost long-haul market, including France-based French bee (which we recently reviewed ); Level, the Spanish low-fare unit of IAG (parent of British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Iberia); Play, the reincarnation of Icelandic carrier Wow; and Norse Atlantic Airways, a resurrection of the former Norwegian Air that is growing its transatlantic service , too. With international airfares giving many travelers sticker shock this year, these lower-priced options offer hope for more affordable international travel.

Get to the beach quicker: These US airlines begin nonstop service to new Tulum airport

round trip flights jetblue

It just got easier to visit resorts on the Mayan Riviera in Mexico. U.S. airlines began flights to the new airport in Tulum on Thursday, and more service is planned for the area in the coming months.

The new flights mean visitors to the broader Cancún area can bypass the main airport and save on travel time to resorts and other attractions in Riviera Maya. Tulum’s Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport officially opened in December and service has been ramping up since.

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are all starting flights on Thursday, with United and JetBlue planning to begin service to the airport soon, and Spirit also planning to fly there down the road.

Here’s how travelers can connect to Tulum.

American Airlines flights to Tulum

American will offer two daily flights between Dallas and Tulum, and one daily round-trip from both Charlotte and Miami. Service from all three cities starts Thursday.

Delta Air Lines flights to Tulum

Delta will offer a daily round trip from its Atlanta hub starting Thursday.

United Airlines flights to Tulum

United will inaugurate service from Newark, Chicago and Houston to Tulum beginning March 31. The airline will also add a daily round-trip from Los Angeles to Tulum for the summer, beginning May 23.

JetBlue flights to Tulum

JetBlue will begin daily nonstop service between New York (JFK) and Tulum on June 13.

Spirit Airlines flights to Tulum

Spirit will begin daily round-trip service to Tulum from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, but has not announced the date for that service to start. It was initially planning to serve the airport beginning Thursday, but reportedly does not have the equipment to support that service yet.

What to know about JetBlue checked bag pricing, increased fees for Trusted Traveler Programs

See all the details for different fare classes.

As airlines continue to update baggage policies and everywhere from fast food chains to theme parks introduce dynamic pricing, JetBlue is combining the two business trends by introducing a new peak and off-peak payment structure for passengers.

The New York-based airline, which first increased its checked bag fees in February among competitors, again changed up its pricing to now charge $50 for the first checked bag and $70 for the second bag while traveling during peak times.

According to JetBlue's baggage info website , the peak pricing applies to passengers paying to check a bag within 24 hours of departure and are traveling in Blue, Blue Basic, or Blue Extra fare classes within the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, or Canada.

The fee for a third checked bag is $135 during peak times, and $160 for a fourth or more bags.

The new pricing also applies to "peak-season" travel dates:

Those flying in Blue, Blue Basic, or Blue Extra will pay $45 for the first checked bag and $60 for the second bag during off-peak hours and $50 and $70 respectively during peak times.

The airline noted that travelers can save $10 on their first two checked items when added before check-in, at least 24 hours before departure. Additionally, checked bag fees are only refundable on JetBlue if the entire booking is canceled prior to scheduled departure.

PHOTO: People check in their bags at the JetBlue Airways counter in the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Jan. 31, 2024, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

JetBlue chalked up the increase for customers as a result of higher business operating costs, such as fuel and increased wages.

Other major carriers including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and United Airlines have all recently made incremental price hikes on checked bags.

CBP announces new fee changes for Trusted Traveler Programs

Prices are also on the rise for travelers who utilize Global Entry or other Trusted Traveler Programs, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Tuesday .

PHOTO: In this Sept. 19, 2015 file photo, volunteers walk past Global Entry Trusted Traveler Network terminals during testing of processes at Hobby Airport's international concourse in Houston.

The new fees going into effect on Oct. 1, for NEXUS, Global Entry, and SENTRI programs, have not been updated in more than 15 years, and "better reflecting the program costs," according to CBP.

Global Entry fees will increase from $100 to $120.

SENTRI, which formerly had an "a la carte" fee structure, will move to a uniform fee of $120 to be collected in full when an application is submitted.

Fees for NEXUS will increase from $50 to $120 for travelers who utilize the joint program managed by CBP and Canada Border Services Agency allowing dedicated processing between the U.S. and Canada.

"As these programs have matured and expanded, updating the fee structures is critical to the continuation and management of the programs," CBP stated.

Jetblue introduces peak pricing to baggage fees, depending on when you fly, you could pay an extra $5 to $10 for your checked bag..

thumbnail

While traveling with JetBlue, you must now consider whether you're flying during a peak travel date when checking a bag, as the difference can cost you $5 to $10 a bag.

Below, CNBC Select breaks down what you need to know about the new checked bag fee pricing — including how to avoid it.

Find the best credit card for you by reviewing offers in our  credit card marketplace  or get personalized offers via  CardMatch™ .

JetBlue checked bag fees

JetBlue already charges a different checked baggage fee based on whether you check your bags within 24 hours of your flight. Now, with the addition of peak and off-peak dates as of March 22, passengers must keep track of another factor when budgeting their trips.

According to the JetBlue website , you must pay $45 for your first checked bag and $60 for your second checked bag if you check your bags within 24 hours of your flight and travel within the U.S., Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean on an off-peak date.

But if you made the same trip during one of JetBlue's peak dates, you would pay an extra $5 for the first bag ($50) and an additional $10 for the second bag ($70).

Peak season pricing applies to the following dates, assuming you booked your ticket on or after March 22, 2024:

  • April 11 to April 29
  • June 20 to Sept. 3
  • Nov. 21 to Dec. 2
  • Dec. 19 to Jan. 6
  • Feb. 13 to Feb. 24
  • April 3 to April 28

For transatlantic flights, the fee during peak travel times for the first checked bag is $70 when checking within 24 hours, and $115 for the second bag.

When reached for comment about the addition of peak travel pricing, JetBlue told CNBC Select that the change was intended to cover increased costs and to "keep base fares as low as possible and ensure customer favorites like seatback TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi remain free for everyone."

How to avoid (or at least lessen) checked bag fees

One way to save on baggage fees is by checking your bags more than 24 hours before your flight. This nets you a $10 discount on the fees of checking both your first and second bag.

To avoid checked bag fees entirely (at least on your first bag), you could book your ticket with the JetBlue Plus Card . This airline card offers one free checked bag on JetBlue flights for you and up to three companions on the same reservation. You'd also earn 6X points on every $1 spent on eligible JetBlue purchases.

Of course, the JetBlue Plus Card can only help you with baggage fees if you're flying JetBlue. The good news is that major airlines usually have a co-branded credit card that can help you with baggage fees. The United℠ Explorer Card , for example, lets you check your first bag for free (as well as the first bag for a traveling companion). In addition, this card provides other perks such as a 25% rebate back (as a statement credit) on food, beverage and Wi-Fi purchases on United flights.

JetBlue begins nonstop JFK to Vancouver service

Sean Cudahy

JetBlue has expanded its international footprint to the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Europe in recent years. Now it has added nonstop service to Canada.

Thursday evening, JetBlue completed its first flight from New York-John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Vancouver (YVR).

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

JetBlue's vice president of network planning called the expansion to Canada an "important milestone" for the airline, which now flies to more than two dozen countries.

The service will include an evening westbound flight from JFK to Vancouver, with a red-eye flight eastbound. The westbound trip is scheduled to depart New York at 6:59 p.m. and land in Vancouver at 10:26 p.m. (PT). The overnight trip back east is at 11:30 p.m. (PT), arriving at JFK at 7:48 a.m.

This expansion in service currently is Vancouver's only link to JFK, but although the airport does have service to New York area airports. You can get to Newark/Liberty International Airport (EWR) from Vancouver on United Airlines and Air Canada, according to the airport's destination map.

Deals on flights

JetBlue marked the occasion by offering some pretty good deals to the British Columbia city for later this year with $119 one-way fares for some late summer and early fall trips. That was a limited time offer that seems to have disappeared already, but keep an eye out -- some of the prices in September, for instance, aren't too high above that, and certainly are better than what you'd pay for a round trip in July or August.

round trip flights jetblue

Northeast Alliance impact

JetBlue mentioned the strengthening of its Northeast Alliance as a major reason this service will help travelers, and that certainly could be the case for American Airlines flyers looking for a direct link to British Columbia.

round trip flights jetblue

You can now go on the American website and book travel on board the new nonstop JetBlue flights. That includes award travel. Like with the JetBlue cash fares, it's pretty expensive through the summer months (80,000 to 100,000 miles round trip in many cases) but you can get a round trip in September for the standard award chart fare of 25,000 miles AAdvantage miles round trip. I found one such option the weekend after Labor Day – a nice opportunity to visit the city before things start to cool off too much.

round trip flights jetblue

Where to stay

Looking at that same weekend in September, the best redemption I could find on points was at a World of Hyatt property right in the heart of downtown Vancouver.

round trip flights jetblue

The Hyatt Regency Vancouver goes for $299 per night, or you can get it for 15,000 points, which TPG values at about $255. Not a mind-boggling redemption, but, hey, not terrible, either.

round trip flights jetblue

I didn't find too many Marriott Bonvoy points redemptions worth trying that weekend, but you can get a room at several properties downtown for around $300 per night.

round trip flights jetblue

Personally, I'd probably go with the Marriott Vancouver Pinnacle Downtown for $298 per night, which looks to have the feel of a classic, city center Marriott.

Bottom line

JetBlue's new, nonstop service between JFK and Vancouver is just the latest example of the airline expanding its footprint beyond the U.S.

round trip flights jetblue

In addition to simply meaning more seats between the two regions, the Northeast Alliance means it's also an opportunity for American Airlines AAdvantage members to book the nonstop flights with their miles.
