Spectrum of the Seas Marks Royal Caribbean’s Return to China

  • April 26, 2024

Spectrum of the Seas

Marking Royal Caribbean International’s return to China after a four-year hiatus, the Spectrum of the Seas arrived in Shanghai today.

Ending an eight-night repositioning cruise that started in Singapore, the 2019-built vessel docked at the Shanghai Baoshan International Cruise Terminal after visits to Vietnam and Hong Kong.

The Spectrum of the Seas is now set to serve the Chinese market with a series of four- and five-night cruises departing from Shanghai.

Visiting Japan and South Korea, the itineraries feature visits to Naha, Jeju, Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Ishigaki and more.

The ship’s schedule also features six- and seven-night cruises that sail to additional Japanese destinations, such as Yokohama, Kobe and Osaka.

Following its seven-month program in Mainland China, the Spectrum of the Seas is set to reposition to Hong Kong in December.

Part of the five-ship Quantum Class, the Spectrum of the Seas was delivered by the Meyer Werft shipyard in April 2019 . Custom-designed to sail in Asia, the 4,200-guest ship was initially based in China on a year-round basis.

Signature features of the ship include North Star, a glass-enclosed gondola of sorts that suspends guests over the ship and the ocean, as well as the FlowRider surf simulator and RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator.

Marking five years in service this month, the Spectrum recently underwent its first major drydock at a shipyard in Singapore .

Building upon its return to the Far East, Royal Caribbean International is adding a second ship to its China lineup next year .

Sailing from the Port of Tianjin, the Ovation of the Seas is set to join the Spectrum of the Seas starting in May 2025.

Royal Caribbean follows MSC Cruises as the second international cruise brand to sail back to China, which marked its return to the country in March

Royal caribbean group (rcl): navigating through financial seas - a swot analysis.

Robust recovery in passenger ticket revenues showcasing a strong market comeback.

Significant increase in net income indicating improved operational efficiency.

Strategic capital management reflected in successful debt restructuring.

Challenges in operating expenses and potential legal proceedings remain a concern.

On April 25, 2024, Royal Caribbean Group ( NYSE:RCL ), the world's second-largest cruise company, filed its 10-Q with the SEC, revealing a significant recovery from the previous year's financial turbulence. The company, which operates a fleet of 65 ships across various brands, including Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea, reported a substantial increase in passenger ticket revenues from $1,897 million in Q1 2023 to $2,542 million in Q1 2024. Onboard and other revenues also saw a healthy rise, contributing to a total revenue jump to $3,728 million, up from $2,886 million in the prior year. This financial rebound is further underscored by a swing from a net loss of $(48) million in Q1 2023 to a net income of $360 million in Q1 2024, reflecting Royal Caribbean's resilience and strategic agility in navigating the post-pandemic market landscape.

Warning! GuruFocus has detected 11 Warning Signs with RCL.

Revenue Growth and Brand Equity: Royal Caribbean Group's impressive revenue growth is a testament to its strong brand equity and successful marketing strategies. The company's ability to increase ticket prices and onboard spending indicates a loyal customer base willing to pay a premium for the Royal Caribbean experience. This brand strength is further supported by the company's diversified portfolio, which caters to a wide range of demographics and preferences, allowing it to capture a significant share of the cruise market.

Operational Efficiency: The notable increase in net income from a loss in the previous year to a substantial gain demonstrates Royal Caribbean's operational efficiency. Cost management and improved operational practices have likely contributed to this turnaround, positioning the company for sustainable profitability. The strategic deployment of ships to capitalize on seasonal demand also reflects the company's adeptness in maximizing revenue opportunities.

Rising Operating Costs: Despite the revenue growth, Royal Caribbean faces rising operating costs, with total cruise operating expenses increasing by $263 million year-over-year. This uptick is attributed to higher capacity and occupancy, as well as additional drydock days. The company must continue to innovate in cost management to maintain its profitability margins in the face of these escalating expenses.

Debt Management: While the company has successfully restructured its debt, as evidenced by the redemption of high-interest senior notes, it still faces the challenge of managing a significant debt load. The interest expense, although reduced, remains a considerable financial obligation that requires careful capital management and strategic financial planning.

Opportunities

Market Expansion: With the cruise industry's expected growth and the gradual return of international travel, Royal Caribbean has the opportunity to expand its market reach. The introduction of new ships and itineraries can attract new customers and drive further revenue growth. Additionally, the company's investment in joint ventures, such as TUI Cruises and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, allows for expansion into new markets and segments.

Technological Advancements: Investing in technology can enhance the customer experience and operational efficiency. Royal Caribbean can leverage data analytics for personalized marketing, implement advanced safety protocols, and explore sustainable technologies to reduce its environmental footprint, which can also serve as a unique selling proposition.

Competitive Landscape: The cruise industry is highly competitive, with several major players vying for market share. Royal Caribbean must continuously innovate and offer exceptional value to maintain its competitive edge. This includes keeping up with trends such as sustainable cruising and experiential travel, which are becoming increasingly important to consumers.

Regulatory and Legal Risks: The company faces potential legal proceedings, such as the Havana Docks lawsuit, which could result in significant financial liabilities. Additionally, the cruise industry is subject to stringent regulations that can impact operations and costs. Royal Caribbean must navigate these legal and regulatory waters carefully to avoid adverse effects on its financial health.

In conclusion, Royal Caribbean Group's latest SEC filing paints a picture of a company on the rebound, with strong revenue growth and a solidified market position. However, challenges such as rising operating costs and debt management, as well as external threats from a competitive landscape and regulatory risks, require vigilant attention. The company's ability to capitalize on market expansion opportunities and technological advancements will be crucial in steering Royal Caribbean towards continued success in the dynamic cruise industry landscape.

Royal Caribbean packing list: What to pack for a cruise, Royal Caribbean style

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Whether you’re new to cruising or someone who’s sailed tons of times but hates the prep, packing for a cruise can be a daunting task. There are standard items — including duct tape — that should be a part of any solid cruise packing list .

But what if you want to drill down even further and pack items specific to your brand of choice? We’ve created this Royal Caribbean packing list to feature everything you need to sail on the line’s midsize and megaships in the islands and around the world. Here’s what to pack for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Royal Caribbean cruise packing list at a glance

  • Royal Caribbean International app

Activity-appropriate attire

  • Branded lanyard or luggage tags
  • Drinks and water bottle

Electronics accessories

Comfy clothes, flowrider board, theme party attire, what to pack for a royal caribbean cruise, the royal caribbean international app.

If you want your cruise with Royal Caribbean to be smooth sailing, download the Royal Caribbean International cruise line app on your cellphone. It will allow you to check in for your sailing in advance, so you’re ready to go on embarkation day. Just provide the required details, upload a photo, link a credit card and choose an embarkation time, and you’ll be able to breeze your way on board in a matter of minutes.

After you board and connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi , it will also allow you to check the daily activity schedule and dining times; message your fellow cruisers; make dining, shore excursion and show reservations; and view your onboard bill.

Even better, since the app is stored on your phone, which we’re sure you’re planning to pack, it doesn’t take up any additional space in your luggage.

A tote bag or small backpack

Whether you plan to be out and about all day in port or roaming the ship in search of your next activity, it helps to have a bag handy to carry things like sunscreen, books and your cellphone.

Given how large Royal Caribbean’s ships can be, you’ll be glad to have a bag so you don’t have to run back and forth to your cabin to grab items you forgot. On the largest Oasis-class vessels , it’s nearly a quarter-mile walk from bow to stern.

Royal Caribbean is known for innovative attractions you never thought you’d see on a cruise ship. They include carousels, skydiving simulators and bumper cars. If you plan to take part in these activities, make sure you’re dressed for success.

For example, onboard zip lines require closed-toe shoes, and you’ll need socks for the climbing shoes you’ll have to wear to scale your ship’s rock climbing wall. Bring long pants and socks if you’d like to lace up your ice skates at Studio B, the ice rink found on many of the line’s vessels.

You’ll want to pack a one-piece bathing suit or some sort of athletic attire if you’re a woman preparing to take on the FlowRider surf simulator . (A crew member told me people in bikinis have about a 50% chance of losing their tops when they fall into the spray.)

A branded lanyard or luggage tags

It’s a fact: Many cruisers wear lanyards around their neck to hold their cruise keycards. (It’s important not to lose the cards since they double as onboard charge cards and shipboard IDs.) Whether you’re going for fashion or function, you can find many styles and colors to meet your needs.

However, perhaps none is as appropriate for a Royal Caribbean voyage as a branded lanyard with the cruise line’s logo. Search Etsy for custom Crown and Anchor options to show your shipmates you’re loyal to Royal.

Another great way to show off your Royal Caribbean pride is with logo luggage tags for your bags. They’re both apropos and functional.

Drinks and a reusable water bottle

If you’re looking to save some money on drinks during your next sailing, note that you can bring two bottles of wine or sparkling wine per cabin. There will be a $15 corkage fee per bottle if you choose to enjoy your beverage outside your room, but it’s still cheaper than purchasing wine on board — even if you have a drink package.

Royal Caribbean also allows passengers to bring up to 12 cans, plastic bottles or cartons of nonalcoholic drinks onto its ships.

If you buy a drink package, you will receive a special branded travel tumbler for the soda machines on board. If you don’t buy a package, you’ll want to pack a reusable water bottle or travel mug that you can refill with your favorite beverage.

No one unplugs on cruises anymore; in fact, bringing a variety of tech accessories can actually enhance your cruise.

Start with a non-surge-protected power strip (ones with surge protectors will be confiscated) to increase the number of outlets available to charge your electronic devices in your cabin. These are especially helpful on older ships, which often lack charging outlets and USB ports .

Looking to capture some candids at the beach on Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, or snag the perfect family photo with the pool deck sunset as a backdrop? Toss a waterproof phone case, selfie stick or GoPro with a gimbal into your bag.

In keeping with the changing preferences of its clientele, Royal Caribbean has largely relaxed its dress code . That means beachwear (by the pools) and resort-casual clothing are the norm during the day. At night, you’ll see passengers in everything from jeans and T-shirts or sports jerseys to ball gowns and tuxedos — although the latter is becoming increasingly less common.

In fact, on my last weeklong cruise with Royal Caribbean, we had one formal night and one “dress to impress” night, neither of which was mandatory.

In that vein, pack comfy clothes appropriate for the weather in the destinations you’re visiting (think: wrinkle-resistant pants , and dresses and shirts made from cotton-polyester blends, which are difficult to wrinkle and fold up quite thin). Quick-dry fabrics are a great option in hot and humid destinations like the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Between the burgers, fries and onion rings from Johnny Rockets; greasy but delicious Sorrento’s pizza; and free Mexican fare at El Loco Fresh, you might find yourself experiencing indigestion or heartburn after indulging in comfort food on Royal Caribbean ships.

Toss a small bottle of antacid into your toiletry kit to help ward off any potential discomfort.

One of the most iconic aspects of many Royal Caribbean ships is the FlowRider — a free surf simulator that allows passengers to try their hand at boogie boarding and surfing.

You’ll sometimes see the more seasoned surfers bringing their own boards onto the ship when they embark. If you’re someone who has tried the FlowRider before and has their own board, why not make it part of your packing list?

Royal Caribbean is well known in the cruise world for its theme parties. You’ll find everything from ’70s and ’80s nights to Caribbean and cowboy themes, as well as a White Night and a club experience called Red, where you might want to dress accordingly.

Unfortunately, Royal Caribbean doesn’t list its theme nights before sailing, so pack a little something for each if you want to be prepared.

I stayed in a balcony cabin on Royal Caribbean's 2 newest and largest cruise ships. One was clearly better — and $900 cheaper.

Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas are Royal Caribbean's newest and largest cruise ships.

I stayed in both of their balcony staterooms — a $130-per-person-per-day difference.

Icon's pricier cabin looked more modern but lacked the functionality and comfort of Wonder's.

Do you know what $900 could buy you? More than three years of Netflix's premium plan, a new Gucci purse, or 2,059 spicy chicken McNuggets.

Or, in the case of Royal Caribbean's two largest and newest cruise ships , the cash could mean the difference between a cheap but functional balcony cabin and, ironically, a more expensive but less comfortable one.

Staterooms with balconies are the most popular cruise cabin category. After all, if you're going on a vacation at sea, wouldn't you want to be able to feel its breeze from your room?

But not all cabins with private outdoor spaces are created equal, even on two new mega-ships owned by the same cruise line.

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in 2022 and its larger successor, Icon of the Seas, in January.

Royal Caribbean assigned me an ocean-view balcony cabin for both complimentary sailings, the longest of which was three nights on Icon.

Both ships are operating seven-night cruises around the Caribbean in 2024.

About 66% of Wonder's cabins fall under the 'balcony' category. On Icon, they make up half of the staterooms.

Wonder of the Seas' balcony cabins start shy of $1,110 per person in 2024.

Even with nearly identical itineraries, the ones on Icon are, at their cheapest, a little more than $2,000 per person this year — or double that for the a New Year's cruise.

Wonder and Icon are the most boisterous, flamboyant, and overwhelming vessels I've ever boarded.

The pool decks were intensely colorful, the crowds were inescapable, and the long lists of activities and dining options were paralyzing.

So imagine my surprise when I unlocked my doors to find surprisingly bland rooms.

The neutral tans, blues, and whites did not scream "we belong on the world's biggest and most colorful cruise ships."

The vessels have an almost two-year age difference, as evidenced by some of their decor (mainly Icon's recessed mood lights and the more chic, darker wood tones).

But besides the light fixtures, rugs, and — frankly negligible — wall art and pillows, both cabins were fairly underwhelming compared to everything outside their front doors .

Aesthetics aside, let’s talk functionality.

Both had furnished 50-square-foot balconies.

Regarding the interior space, my 204-square-foot cabin on Icon of the Seas was 22 square feet larger than mine on Wonder.

In retrospect, I would've thought Icon's was smaller. More on that in a bit.

Both king-sized beds faced a television and some wall storage.

And both were flanked by light fixtures with built-in USB outlets, as is expected on most modern cruise ships.

The cruise line says the ships' balcony cabins use two twin mattresses that have been "converted" to make a king bed. It's a common practice I've never had an issue with — until Icon.

On Wonder, the plush pillows enveloped me the moment I laid down. I slept great. No complaints.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the new ship.

I (my back pain) could feel the hard ridge where the two mattresses met, making for a pretty miserable and uncomfortable sleep.

So much for starfishing — I kept to one side of the bed to avoid rolling over the bony bump.

For the most part, the living “rooms” were the same.

Both had the same furniture I see on almost every mass-market ship: a couch that could convert into a bed and a desk that extended into a dresser.

But storage, a high priority for cruisers, was organized differently.

Two thin wardrobes with drawers, hangars, and shelves surrounded either side of my bed on Wonder .

Icon, on the other hand, had one large wardrobe next to the living room.

Unfortunately, it had noticeably less shelving. And the metal bins let out ear-piercing screeches at every move — a lazy and annoying detail that the designers could've easily fixed with cheap felt pads.

So far, the differences have been small. But not for long.

I had two gripes with my Wonder bathroom: the lack of hair conditioner and the ill-positioned faucet that flooded the counter whenever I washed my hands.

I had the same issues on Icon. But that was the least of my concerns.

My bathroom on the older ship was well-sized for 1 person, but maybe too small for 2.

On Icon — the world's largest cruise ship — my bathroom was too compact for even one body.

Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, told reporters in January that 80% of Icon's 2,805 cabins were designed for families, a sharp increase from previous vessels like Wonder.

I'm not sure a family of four could coexist in Icon's balcony cabin — solely because of the bathroom size. There's no way two people could fit in there simultaneously. A fight over who gets priority access to the toilet could ruin a peaceful family vacation! (Which is to say, I'm glad I was traveling alone.)

With the bathroom door closed, I accidentally elbowed the walls more times than I could count.

The spare towels had to be stored on a shelf inside the shower. Because the counter was so small, I had to keep most of my toiletries and products on the shelves or in the drawer.

Surprisingly, that's where Icon excelled. Its bathroom had more storage options than its older counterpart, which didn't even have a drawer.

However, the older ship's shower had a clothesline perfect for drying swimwear. It's a small but crucial amenity, especially on a vessel with so many pools and waterslides.

Unfortunately, both were stocked with two-in-one body wash and shampoo — and no hair conditioner

Let’s go through our checklist.

My balcony cabin on Wonder looked less modern than its successor (the TV on Icon had Chromecast, after all).

But it was significantly more functional and comfortable. The bed was incomparably more pleasant, the closets had more defined storage components, and the bathroom was considerably larger, even if it lacked additional shelving and drawers.

The question is: Which one is more worth its price?

Icon's cheapest balcony cabins are currently $900 more than the most affordable ones on Wonder — an almost $130 per person and day difference.

Based on the quality of the staterooms alone, if you prioritize functionality, comfort, and affordability over modern decor, consider saving money and going with the two-year-old ship .

But let’s not forget that cruise fares include unlimited food, on board activities, and nighttime entertainment.

Both ships have a fairly similar list of amenities. But only the newer one has a waterpark , an adult-only infinity pool club, and a swim-up bar, to name a few unique amenities.

So yes, Icon's balcony cabins are more costly. But the staggering price difference — and tiny bathroom — could be worth it if you think the its surplus of additional amenities is worth paying for.
