RV LIFE

Solo RVer Clubs Take The Lonely Out Of Alone

' src=

Full-time RV travel without a partner is unthinkable to some people. But being alone on the road isn’t impossible and many people find it fun and enjoyable.

Whether you’re partnered with someone, newly single, or just yearning to get on the road by yourself, consider joining any of the many solo RVer clubs that can help you do it with confidence. The best part is you don’t even need to be a full-timer to join.

clubs

She didn’t wait to travel the world. (Image: fmcnair iRV2 Forums).

Solo RVer clubs create a community on the road.

This 74-years young solo RVer shipped her small HYMAR, Class B from Graz, Austria to the Americas. “Thus far she has put on over 44000 miles. In a few months, she wants to go south to Mexico, Central America, and on south into South America,” writes iRV2 member fmcnair . Clearly, she didn’t want to wait for a partner to make the epic journey.

But what happens when a solo RVer actually doesn’t want to be alone? That’s when one of the many active solo RVer clubs can fill the need. You don’t have to look far to find one.

“It’s nice to have the option of being in a group. When you make friends in the clubs and you go the same route sometimes, it’s nice to know you’ll run into a friendly face!” writes GraciesMom in the iRV2 Discussion Forums . Some clubs like the LoWs (Loners on Wheels ) have a conservative feel, others are a little wild and many have a particular focus such as religion or hobbies.

Wandering Individuals Network (WIN)

This solo RVer club has such an active events calendar that there’s no excuse to sit around feeling lonely. Like most full-timers, WIN member events move north during summer and fly south for winter.

WIN boasts up to 120 different caravan trips each year in which they take care of all the details for members “like free or inexpensive camping spots, destinations mapped out with GPS coordinates, where to dump and get water, and information about the area we’re visiting,” says the WIN website. The group has minimal requirements for joining with the exception of asking members to be “Responsible, Respectful, and Respectable.”

Solos: The Escapees Singles Club

The Escapees RV Club hosts one of the largest singles groups within the RVing community. After becoming an “SKP” member it costs just $10 annually to connect with other singles online and in person, as well as participate in rallies and events held around the country.

“Escapees (SKP) is a great organization and are one of the most dedicated organizations for RV’ers. SKPs are a friendly bunch,” writes iRV2 member Route66 .

RVing Women

Whether you’re just dreaming of being on the road or looking for some confidence building friendships for your travels, RVing Women has it. Founded in 1991, RVing Women is one of the oldest all-female solo RVer clubs in the world.

It hosts an international roster with more than 2,000 members and oversees 18 regional chapters around the United States. Their chapters range from Solo Travelers, which unites solo women RVers from all areas of North America to the location-specific Freewheelers Chapter of Northern California and Northern Nevada.

Remember there’s no rule that says only couples can enjoy North America’s most beautiful scenery . If you’re single and yearning to hit the road you have all the support you need in organizations like these.

If you’re looking for others to encourage you in your travels and share a happy hour or two, join one or more of these solo RVer clubs. These tight-knit communities one of the best ways to make connections with people who already share your desire to be free on the open road.

What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

Were you looking forward to a trip with your friends, only to find out that they had backed out last minute? Wondering how to find a travel companion online? Even if your family and friends' schedules don't match yours, your vacation doesn't have to be ruined because of it. GAFFL can help you to find the perfect travel companion for your next adventure.

The best way to find a travel buddy on GAFFL is to search for your desired destination and browse through thousands of user-generated trips created by solo travelers around the world.

rv travel companions wanted

A good travel companion is someone who has a similar itinerary to you. It's also someone you think you'll get along with.

Every user on GAFFL has a profile where they list their interests. If you and your potential trip mate share some common interests, it’ll make your trip go a lot smoother.

It's also important to have a similar budget in mind. If your travel companion wants to do more activities and eat at expensive restaurants but you can’t afford it, it can lead to an unpleasant trip for the both of you.

When browsing trips on GAFFL, make sure to read through the trip details to learn more about the trip and determine if the activities are something you want to do and can afford.

If you like a trip on GAFFL, simply click 'Connect,' and you'll be able to chat with your travel buddy right away. If you have your own travel plans, you can start your own trip and others can request to connect with you!

Finding the right travel companion online can be difficult for solo travelers. GAFFL, on the other hand, makes it very simple. Use our world-class real-time messaging system to get to know your potential travel partner. Chat with them to see if they'd be a good travel companion for you, and then plan together, meet up with your travel buddy, and start exploring together.

rv travel companions wanted

GAFFL is the best website/app for solo travelers looking for travel companions online because we prioritize our travelers' trust and safety. Our multi-step verification process includes social media, phone number, and a valid government ID, so you can be confident in your potential travel companion. With adventurers from over 190 countries, you can connect, chat, and find the perfect travel buddy to meet up with on GAFFL.

I think GAFFL plays a role by allowing solo travelers to find travel buddies when needed. Though solo travel is a great way to travel, there are some experiences that are better enjoyed with more people (some don’t even allow for solo).

Friends and families are not always available to travel with, and sometimes the interests do not align for travel. Or sometimes you just want to socialize while still being solo most of the time. I think GAFFL helps solve these problems.

Solo travel is great. But there are some times that I do not recommend someone travel solo and where I personally try my hardest not to travel solo. Some examples of this relate to safety, like hiking a trail that doesn’t have many people walking it each day, or being in certain destinations where I’ve heard from others that it’s difficult as a solo female.

Other examples relate to expenses, like taking a road trip and renting a car. Situations like these are where I think something like GAFFL is a great idea. With GAFFL, you can find a group to go on that hike with or split that car rental with!

We truly believe that the best memories and experiences are the ones that are shared with others. It doesn’t matter if you’ve known someone for an hour or your whole life, when you do something badass together it’s sure to be a time you won’t forget.

Making connections and becoming friends with people all over the world is such a powerful tool to have when traveling. One day maybe you’ll visit your new friend in their homeland. Some of the best trips happen when you have a friend playing tour guide in their country.

GAFFL is a really cool opportunity to enrich your travels with like-minded people who will push you to get out of your comfort zone. No matter what type of personality you have, making new friends on the road is easier than ever.

One of the things that hold people back is that they don’t have a partner or a best friend to travel with and they feel scared and uncertain to travel alone, especially long-term. GAFFL helps with that!

Another thing that holds people back is the perceived cost of travel. While travel doesn’t have to be expensive, it’s always more affordable when you can share the cost of accommodation and groceries with someone else. Again, GAFFL provides a solution for that!

I think this is a fabulous idea because the things that can get expensive while solo traveling can usually also be easily split between people. If you aren’t a hostel fan, it would be awesome to have people to split hotels and Airbnb with.

If car rental is the cheapest way to get around a destination, it would be ideal to have others to split the costs with. But most importantly it always makes the experience that much more memorable when you have new friends to share it with.

Solo RVers do not need to be lonely.

Focus on your hobbies and interests to meet other RVers when traveling Solo

RVing along the Pacific Ocean

Many single RVers belong to RV clubs for singles which is an excellent idea and may lead to finding new travel partners or others with the same interests. By joining these groups the single RVer will have a special network of support they can turn to when they have any questions.

However, rather than limiting yourself to just clubs for singles, why not focus instead on what you like to do or participate in and find other RVers who like the same thing.  If a person gets busy doing things they enjoy they may find that being single is not an issue.

There are sub groups in many clubs whose focus is on amateur radio, computers, four-wheeling, genealogy, geocaching, writing, bird watching, prospecting and metal detecting, quilting, rock collecting, square dancing, sewing, workamping, volunteering, and even wood carving. There seems to be a group for almost every topic possible.

Volunteering

Volunteering your time on a worthwhile project not only gives you a purpose it gives you an opportunity to become involved with a group of people in a common cause. Habitat for Humanity builds homes for people in need and there are many RVers who can swing a hammer or do what they can while volunteering.

Square Dancing

Almost every city or town has a square dance club and visitors are always welcome.  By doing a search for square dancing on Google should lead to a number of resources.  If you plan on being in an area for a time, contact the local club and see if you can join them while you are there.

Outdoor Recreation

If you love the outdoors you are not alone. There are thousands of others who would love to take a hiking trip, catch a fish, and kayak a river, plan a four wheeling adventure or find a rare bird. By belonging to a RV Club you can send out a request for information from the group or ask if others are interested in joining you or possibly meet up with you along the way.

Rather than limiting yourself to just RVers turn your search towards the activities and as an example if your plans include taking your RV to Alaska next summer contact the Chamber of Commerce, tourist bureau or community recreation centres for events you can attend or join while there.

An outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices, geocaching can be a lot of fun and involves people from all over the world. It can give an RVer a purpose to their travels and allow them to meet others who enjoy searching for treasures.

Don’t give up RVing

I have had the opportunity of speaking with a couple of RVers who recently lost their partners and don’t want to give up their RV travels. Their lives have been turned upside down and are unsure of what changes they need to make to continue traveling happily.

By focusing on the destination and pre-planning, RVing does not have to be lonely.  Get involved, take a chance and by acknowledging that it will take some work on your part RVing can continue to be something to look forward to whether you are by yourself or with a partner.

http://www.lonersonwheels.com/ Has 50 Regional Chapters in the US and Canada. This club has been active since 1969 with rallies, campouts, caravanning and lots of support for its members.

http://www.escapees.com/solos/ You must be a member of Escapees to join their very active solo group but for anyone who wants to connect with other active RVers this might be something to be considered.

http://www.rvingwomen.org This club has 16 chapters with women from both Canada and the US as members. It doesn’t matter whether you own an RV or are just dreaming of having one this group offers support and friendship to its thousands of women members.

Great column, I have (as you can see) posted a reply to people looking for a companion, the problem with some of these solo RV/website clubs is that you have to be a paid member (I guess) to post something on the forums if you are looking for someone, at this time I do NOT have an RV, but once I do (or part of one) thinking of getting either a camper for a truck or trailer and going with someone who has either a truck or car, I have not problem with paying for a membership. Sam’s club does not seem to require that so will post something on there and post here to see if I can on the others.

I did reply to others posting looking for a companion but it has not posted yet, did I do something wrong, I posted a URL for a site where people can private message as I did not want to put my personal email and phone here, could that be the problem?

I tried to repost my replies for those who are looking for a companion as it is not showing up here and it said it was posted already but it does not show up, maybe because it is the same message posted to everyone or I posted a URL. Since I do not want to expose my private email on here, I had suggested that those looking for a traveling companion contact me through travel-buddies website (perhaps putting the URL blocked me from posting this so it can be googled) and after private messaging we can exchange emails and private email addresses, I am not a shill for them and it costs nothing to join but if this is not allowed, I can give my spam email address which I do not prefer to give out as I may get more spam and difficult to find responses to my request here.

You didn’t do anything wrong – it’s been my delaying. My apologies. If you ever want to contact me directly send me an email to carolann@roamingrv.com and I will get back to you asap.

Thanks so much. Carol Ann

Thanks so much. I am working on a list of clubs, etc that solo RVers can either join or research – it’s so difficult for some people to connect and we need a safe way for you and others in your position to do so. I’ll post a link to it on this page when it’s ready. It won’t be long.

Travel Companions for Seniors – How to Find the Best Travel Partner for You

Many women over 60 love to travel, but don’t want to travel alone. If you’re looking for alternatives to traveling solo, perhaps you would do well to find a good travel partner.

Traveling can be a bit of a stress-test for a friendship – being in new surroundings with a different schedule, different food, and even different customs and languages can present challenges to your friendship if you’re not prepared. Some otherwise wonderful friends are not always the most ideal travel companions.

Before you embark on a long journey, it’s best to think ahead and talk in advance to make sure you and your travel partner are well suited to travel together.

Here are a few tips for how to communicate and plan to find the perfect travel partner:

Discuss Your Goals for the Trip

What do you most want to experience on this trip? Are you hoping for a relaxing visit to the beach, or a bustling sightseeing tour with an action-packed itinerary? Do you want to spend time alone, or stay together most of the time? Do you want to meet new people, or get to know each other better? Do you want to experience serenity or stimulation – do you want to retreat from civilization, or get caught up in the excitement of an urban center?

It’s best to have a sense of what kind of vacation experience you want to get, prior to embarking on the journey. Talk with your travel partner about your hopes and expectations. Even if you don’t agree on absolutely every aspect of the trip, make sure you have enough common ground and can support each other in finding your ideal vacation experiences along the way.

Choose a Good “Roommate”

It’s wonderful to have a travel partner to share the adventure with – but make sure you are compatible. Is your travel partner easy to get along with in close quarters, or do they have a lot of particular needs that make it difficult to share space together? Do you enjoy each other’s company? Can you have fun talking to each other for hours – and more importantly, perhaps, can you enjoy the silence together and share space without constantly having to entertain each other?

Talk About Your Budget

Traveling with a friend is a great way to save money on accommodation and meal expenses, but make sure that you both have the same idea of what you want this vacation to cost.

Will you be splitting the costs of the trip (hotels, restaurant meals, tours, etc.) or each paying your own way separately? Does one of you have more expensive needs than the other – will you both be happy in a no-frills hotel, or do you need a more deluxe set of accommodations?

Talking about these issues in advance can avoid any misunderstandings or hard feelings once you are on vacation.

Take a Short Trip Together First

It’s often best to take a test run with your new travel partner, to make sure you can be a good team on the road. Before you book a round-trip ticket to the far side of the world, consider taking a short weekend trip to stay at a nearby Bed and Breakfast.

Choosing the right travel partner can make your vacations even more enjoyable and often affordable. Just make sure to discuss some expectations upfront to make sure you both can get the vacation experience you were hoping for – without any misunderstandings or disappointments along the way.

Have you ever traveled with a friend? What did you learn from the experience that you can share with the rest of the community? Do you have any other senior travel tips to share? Please join the conversation.
