The Center Seat: 55 Years Of Star Trek

  • View history

The Center Seat: 55 Years Of Star Trek is an eleven-part documentary series produced by The Nacelle Company for first-time streaming by History Vault (the paid streaming service of The History Channel ) through Prime Video (on whose Amazon.com mother site episodes also became available for rental/purchase downloads), that chronicles rare and fascinating details of how Star Trek began, where it's been, and how it's going where no television series has gone before. Beverly Crusher performer Gates McFadden was commissioned as the series narrator.

Featuring a veritable who's who interviewee line-up of Star Trek alumni, ranging from performers through production staffers to historians, the first season only covers the first four decades of the Star Trek franchise . It was creator/director/producer Brian Volk-Weiss ' full intention though, to have a second season produced that would cover the remaining decade-and-a-half, " Our intention is for The Center Seat to be a living series. We absolutely want to cover The Next Generation movies, the J.J. Abrams trilogy, and we will of course cover the latest generation of Star Trek shows. We have already started that work, like we have already interviewed F. Murray Abraham for Insurrection . We are in production now on more episodes. Our goal is to not stop at ten [episodes], and we won’t stop at ten, " as Volk-Weiss stated at the launch of the series. [1] But even though an eleventh episode was added to the first season eventually, no news on a potential second season has been forthcoming since.

While Star Trek had been the subject of countless documentaries before, this was the first time that it became covered in an entirely Star Trek -specific documentary series on its own, instead of being either a part of larger more generic science fiction/motion picture documentary series, or a single standalone production.

Summary [ ]

Episodes [ ].

  • "Lucy Loves Trek " It all began when Gene Roddenberry convinced Desilu to foot the bill for not one, but two Star Trek pilots. Thanks to Desilu's boss – America's darling Lucille Ball – the world met Kirk , Spock , and McCoy .
  • "Saturday Morning Pinks" Didn't realize there was a cartoon version of Star Trek in the early 1970s? Not only was it great, but with original series creator Gene Roddenberry, writer D.C. Fontana , and the series' original stars on board, it is the fourth season of the original show.
  • "Trekking through the '70s - Phase II and The Motion Picture " Paramount wanted to launch a fourth network with the new Star Trek series Phase II as its flagship. When the network proved unworkable, Phase II appeared doomed – until Star Wars and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind proved box office hits. Phase II became the 1979 blockbuster Star Trek: The Motion Picture .
  • " Trek Goes To The Movies " The 1980s saw Paramount release three linked Star Trek movies to huge box-office success. The first, The Wrath Of Khan , saw Ricardo Montalban as Khan , a villain from the original series, return. It was followed by The Search For Spock , directed by Leonard Nimoy . He returned to the director's chair for The Voyage Home , the biggest Star Trek success yet.
  • "Whales, God and Pepto Bismol" The mid 1980s saw three directors of note helm Star Trek features; Leonard Nimoy came back to save the whales in Trek 's biggest box office hit, followed by William Shatner helming the crew's search for God, and the return of Nicholas Meyer for the original crew's final adventure, one drenched in pink Klingon blood!
  • "Queue for Q " In 1987 Paramount decided Trek should return to its roots – television. Star Trek: The Next Generation would become the first hour-long scripted show sold directly to the syndicated television market. Paramount's gamble paid off. Who hasn't heard of Picard , Data , and Worf ?
  • "Dancing with Syndication in the Pale Moonlight" After Gene Roddenberry's death, Trek ventured into yet another incarnation. Deep Space Nine was different from its predecessor, set on a space station. Its 1993 debut featured an African-American captain and heavily serialized story arcs – both firsts. This was new Trek .
  • "Voyage(r) to the Delta Quadrant" 1995 brought another Trek series . This one featured a new starship, a return to episodic storytelling, and Trek 's first female captain, Kathryn Janeway . It was also the flagship for Paramount's new television network, United Paramount Network ( UPN ). Despite running seven seasons, the addition of Seven of Nine wasn't well-received by the entire cast.
  • "Starships A-Z" Kirk, Spock, Picard, Data – the list of great Trek characters is incomplete without the Enterprise , Starfleet 's flagship vessel. But Enterprise isn't alone – there's a whole list of Federation vessels that aren't appreciated enough. This episode ensures they are.
  • "It's Been A Long Time..." Plagued by fledgling UPN's under performance, Enterprise 's premise (a prequel about the Federation's founding) was undercut by the decision to make the third season a reaction to 9/11. Lackluster ratings meant Captain Archer and his crew would only get four seasons.
  • "The Stars Above" From the series regulars and recurring roles down to the folks who just did guest spots, thousands of actors have brought the characters of Star Trek to life. Hear them tell what it's like on their side of the camera lens.

Background information [ ]

  • The series was publicly and officially announced by The History Channel on 11 March 2021. [2]
  • Even though the entirety of the series became only accessible through paid streaming services, the first four episodes were released for free and aired on History's main channel, The History Channel, from 5 November to 22 November 2021. The seven other episodes were simultaneously released by History Vault on 5 November and were joined by the first four episodes after 22 November.
  • Both production company The Nacelle Company and creator/director/producer Brian Volk-Weiss had prior experience with Star Trek as both had also been responsible for the release of the 2017-2019 documentary series The Toys That Made Us , which had featured a Star Trek -specific episode, as well as the even earlier 2016 50 Years of Star Trek stand-alone documentary, also produced for The History Channel.
  • Despite the overall availability due to Prime Video's worldwide coverage, and having stressed the importance of syndication for televised Star Trek in several of its episodes, the documentary series was on at least two occasions syndicated itself. In the Netherlands, the ( subtitled ) series was broadcast for a month in the evening time-slots by commercial broadcaster RTL Z from 18 March to 11 April 2022 on a repetitive, twice-a-week, multi-episode basis, as " 55 Jaar Star Trek ", [3] [4] (X) enjoying similar repeat cycle airings in the following years to wit, from 21 April to 15 May 2023, [5] (X) and from 1 March to 25 March 2024. RTLZ had episodes 9 and 11 combined into one episode for their airings. The series had in the intervening time been added to the catalog of the local streaming service Videoland. [6]
  • In Germany, the series was syndicated to commercial broadcaster ProSieben Maxx aired who aired the series as " Inside Star Trek – Hinter den Kulissen des Enterprise-Universums ", premiering on 2 December and airing on a repetitive weekly multi-episode basis through 16 December 2021, but was shy of three episodes (nos. 5, 10 and 11). As is customary in German speaking countries, the original soundtrack (including McFadden's narration) was overdubbed in German by Bastian Pastewka, a local cult comedian who considers himself a "Super- Trekkie ". [7] The broadcast cycle was repeated from 8 September through 26 December 2022, and from 31 August through 22 September 2023, these times with episodes 10 and 11 included, the latter additionally enjoying its own individual airing by commercial broadcaster Kabel Eins on 16 May 2023. [8] On 25 December 2022 at the end of the second broadcast cycle, ProSieben Maxx offered up the series on their own streaming service, continuing to lack episode 5 though. [9]
  • Other digital content providers have followed suit in providing their customers with the option to view/buy the series, which included, among others, the iTunes Store , [10] Vimeo , [11] and Microsoft. [12] In the UK the series became available for free streaming on IMDb.tv on 18 March 2022 through the local Prime Video. [13]
  • The series has spawned The Center Seat: 55 Years of Trek - The Complete, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek print companion book, released on 21 March 2023, followed a month later by the DVD release .

Created and directed by Nacelle founder and CEO, Brian Volk-Weiss , The Center Seat is described as the ultimate deep dive into the world of Star Trek . Timed to coincide with the iconic sci-fi franchise’s 55th anniversary this year, it will offer Trekkies a behind-the-scenes look at pivotal moments in the franchise’s history — from its inception at Lucille Ball’s production company Desilu through recent film and television adaptations.

“ Star Trek , from before I was 10 years old, gave me the closest thing I have to a code to follow in my life,” Volk-Weiss said. “If it wasn’t for the words ‘I don’t believe in the no-win scenario,’ I’d be very alone, broke, and miserable in this world. So to say this is a passion project would be a tremendous understatement.”

INTERVIEW: ‘The Center Seat’ to celebrate Star Trek’s 55th on History Channel

The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek is a new series on the History Channel that takes a deep dive into all things Star Trek . The show — created, produced and directed by Brian Volk-Weiss — begins in the early days of the sci-fi franchise when Lucille Ball took a gamble on this out-of-this-world idea from Gene Roddenberry. Episode by episode the series progresses to include stories from The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise , plus some of the movies along the way.

Gates McFadden, who played Dr. Beverly Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation, provides the voiceover for The Center Seat , which premieres tonight, Nov. 5 at 10 p.m. on the network.

For Volk-Weiss, this intergalactic journey began many decades ago.

“Well, if we go all the way back, not to be cheesy, but my mom introduced me to Star Trek , so that’s pretty much where it began,” the director said in a recent phone interview. “We did a show for Netflix called The Toys That Made Us and then The Movies That Made Us . Those shows seemed to be well received, and I guess on top of that, we also have worked with History Channel many, many times. We had two shows on History Channel last year. We’ve done a lot with them. … And basically the idea was very simple. I was like if Ken Burns did a deep dive into Star Trek, what would that be like? That was the idea, and I put together a deck. And by the grace of God, History Channel bought it.”

Volk-Weiss’ love for Star Trek began with The Original Series , known as TOS by Trekkers and Trekkies, but his best memories from childhood actually deal with the original crew’s movies, including the well-received and highly influential Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

“It started technically with The Original Series , but it got serious or important or however you want to say it with the Star Trek movies,” he said. “So I really barely remember watching The Original Series as a kid, but I vividly, vividly, vividly remember seeing Star Trek II in the theaters and talking nonstop about Star Trek . It really was Star Trek II that got the ball rolling.”

When Volk-Weiss and his team at The Nacelle Company sat down and decided to track out the different episodes for The Center Seat , they knew they had to focus their efforts. With 55 years of television and movie history, there was too much to pack into a limited number of episodes, so for this first dive into the franchise — consisting of 10 episodes — the team decided to map out a journey from Roddenberry to Rick Berman, the producer of TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise.

“Basically what we did was we made a list of everything we wanted to talk about, I mean everything, and then that probably was over 50 episodes, believe it or not,” the director said. “And then we just broke it down into the most important topics, and we focused on what we perceived to be the most important topics. Just to give you an example of what I mean, we very early on made the decision to stop at the end of the Berman era. So just by doing that we knew that we weren’t, at least initially, going to be doing anything with The Next Generation movies and also the J.J. [Abrams] movies and also the Discovery era. … We knew it would end with basically Rick Berman. We knew that the show would start with Lucille Ball and Gene Roddenberry basically turning the lights on. We knew that season one would end with Rick Berman turning the lights off after Enterprise wrapped.”

McFadden came onboard because Volk-Weiss and the famous actor have been working together on a new podcast project. InvestiGates: Who do you think you are? is a successful podcast that launched earlier this year and features McFadden talking with other actors and creative team members from the Star Trek franchise. Their topics of conversation are not only about the show, but life, relationships, culture, family and love.

“We do a podcast with Gates called InvestiGates , so we already knew her,” Volk-Weiss said. “And we were already working with her, very successfully I might add. It is an extremely, extremely popular podcast, so I just thought to myself, you know, I’ve never had a producer who actually was at the place that we’re covering. So I just said to her, ‘Gates, why don’t you be an executive producer? All you got to do is watch rough cuts and give us your thoughts.’ She’s like, ‘OK, cool.’ She was not supposed to do the voiceover. One thing that I can tell you is of everything I have to do as a director of documentaries, the #1 thing I hate, and it’s probably the only part about my job I don’t like, is figuring out who is going to do the voiceover. So I kept procrastinating, and I never procrastinate. I’m like the last person on earth to procrastinate, but as with anybody, if you don’t like a topic, you tend to procrastinate. So I was procrastinating, procrastinating, and finally the day came when I was told, you’ve got to pick somebody. I don’t know what it was, but I was like Gates has a great voice. We’re already working with her. She’s been amazing. By the way, half of the important people we have, including Rick Berman, we would not have without Gates McFadden personally trying to get them in the show.”

He added: “So I just called Gates, and I’m like, ‘Hey, what do you think about doing the VO?’ She was like, ‘I love it. Call my agent.’ So I called her agent. We worked out a deal, and that was it. And, in my opinion, admittedly biased, she knocked it out of the park.”

55 years of star trek history channel

September 8 marked the 55th anniversary of the debut of a little TV show called Star Trek, which against all odds became one of the biggest cultural phenomenons -- and multi-billion-dollar entertainment franchises -- of our time.  Now, the show and its legacy is being celebrated in a ten-part docuseries, which will premiere November 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on The History Channel.

The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek is narrated and executive-produced by Gates McFadden , who played Dr. Beverly Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation .  Each episode will focus on a different chapter in the history of the Star Trek franchise, from the origins of the original series to recent film and TV adaptations.

In addition to hours of show footage, the docuseries features interviews with writers, directors, producers, showrunners and Star Trek actors past and present, including Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig from the original series, Denise Crosby , Wil Wheaton , John De Lancie and Brent Spiner from The Next Generation, Kate Mulgew , Roxann Dawson, Tim Russ and Robert Beltran from Star Trek: Voyager , Nana Visitor from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and more.

If that's still not enough Star Trek for you, six additional episodes will be available on History Vault, the network's subscription video service.

History Channel Launching ‘The Center Seat’ Docuseries All About Star Trek

55 years of star trek history channel

| March 11, 2021 | By: Anthony Pascale 35 comments so far

We are living in a great time for Star Trek documentaries. Earlier this week we reported on the new Voyager doc breaking crowdfunding records . And today brings news that the History Channel is doing a full series all about the 55-year history of the franchise.

The “ultimate” history of Trek

The Nacelle Company, producers of popular documentary series like The Toys that Made Us and The Movies That Made Us , is taking on the final frontier. Today they revealed they are working on an 8-part series titled The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek for the History Channel. The series promises to do the deepest of dives into the world of the Star Trek franchise. According to the announcement, The Center Seat will be “the ultimate Star Trek documentary that everyone has always wanted, and now they’re getting.”

Each episode of the series will focus on a different chapter in Star Trek history, starting with the inception of the original Star Trek series at Desilu. The doc series will feature interviews with people who worked on the show in front and behind the camera, as well as experts. The Nacelle Company promises The Center Seat will “reveal never-before-seen backstage stories and offer fresh insights” with “no stone is left unturned, including lesser known aspects of the franchise like The Animated Series and Phase II .”

The new Trek docuseries was created by Nacelle CEO Brian Volk-Weiss, who will also serve as director. “ Star Trek , from before I was ten years old, gave me the closest thing I have to a code to follow in my life. If it wasn’t for the words ‘I don’t believe in the no-win scenario’ I’d be very alone, broke, and miserable in this world. So to say this is a passion project would be a tremendous understatement.” said Volk-Weiss in a statement provided to TrekMovie.

In 2016, Trekmovie interviewed Volk-Weiss for his previous Trek documentary for the History Channel,  50 Years of Star Trek. Volk-Weiss told us then that he wished he’d had a whole hour to go into Lucille Ball’s contribution to the very existence of  Star Trek,  so that’s likely a subject the doc will explore. He also told us that his interview with Leonard Nimoy—the last one ever done with the actor—gave him “one of the greatest moments in my entire life.”

There are some other familiar faces working on this exciting new project. One of the executive producers for the show is Mark Altman, co-host of the Inglorious Treksperts podcast and co-author of The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek . And Star Trek: The Next Generation castmember Gates McFadden is also one of the executive producers for the new docuseries.

No specific date on when the series will be released, but the announcement indicates it will be timed to coincide with Star Trek’s 55th anniversary, so it seems likely to debut in September 2021.

Book Review: ‘The Center Seat’ Fills In Gaps That Didn’t Make The Docuseries’ Final Cut

As Tony and Laurie mentioned in the podcast after the Paramount+ launch, aren’t these kinds of documentaries in the Smithsonian Channel’s wheelhouse?

It seems really bizarre that this is going to the History Channel, a Disney outlet, rather than ViacomCBS’ own platform.

Or PBS, which had an excellent series called Pioneers of Television several years ago. History Channel actually doing a show about history? Wow, and here I thought they’d purged all that so they could show us more shows about flea markets and swamps.

History (They dropped the “Channel not long after SciFi became SyFy) tries to do one or two new actual documentary or docudrama projects per quarter; depending on budgets and production schedules. They usually run on Sunday nights in Prime Time. The second season of The Foods That Made America (about the mass market and fast food brands that gave America a common thread as it became a highly mobile society) is airing.

I’m super excited, but I don’t see how they can fit all that into 8 episodes and still call it the ultimate Trek documentary. Some Trek shows will be getting short-changed.

I’m sorry they’re starting this series after so many of the makers of TOS — Roddenberry himself, Bob Justman, Dorothy Fontana, Herb Solow, and so on — are dead, since without them, their history of TOS will be incomplete. Still, I’m glad to hear that a comprehensive documentary of Star Trek is in the works.

Some days, it seems as if the list of people Star Trek DIDN’T inspire would be shorter than the list of people it did. :-)

Lots of interview footage bound to exist

“Inside Star Trek” which was written by Herb Solow and Bob Justman goes very deep into detail regarding TOS, from the first time that Herb Solow met Roddenberry, to “The Cage” pilot, and all the way through the ending of the third season of the show.

Yep, I’ve read it. But it doesn’t contain interview footage, so someone would have to read aloud from the book or summarize it, to get that stuff into a video documentary.

There is interview footage used for OS blu rays.

They’ll probably take snippets of interviews these people did for the Academy of TV and film over the years (you can find them online – and in them they are asked and go into a lot of detail about their involvement with TOS.)

I’ll be happy to watch it.

Absolutely something I would be interested in.

5 years late but better than never.

Will CBS/Paramount allow them to use actual footage from the shows and movies, or will this be another one of those lousy documentaries that just shows still photos and uses bad sound-alike Star Trek music because they didn’t get the rights?

CBS seems to understand, that not fighting fair use clips in other people’s for profit documentaries is free advertising for their product, so they probably won’t have any issues. Nacelle producing the series won’t hurt either. Their Netflix series have reportedly earned them a lot of cache in Hollywood.

I would imagine that’s just a question of the right price. If the doc wants to license footage from the shows and movies they will have to pay a license fee. I can’t imagine CBS/Paramount will block it if there’s money to be made. I mean it’s similar with the Voyager Documentary: They’re using some of the extra fundraising money to license footage and original music from the show.

Sounds great! It looks like Star Trek will have a bigger 55th anniversary than 50th. I wonder how far will it cover? I’m guessing through Enterprise but maybe will include the Kelvin movies as well.

I believe Les Moonves is the real reason to have a bigger 55th Anniversary. I am glad for everythying that is happening. And I agree, Lower Decks was the big surprise and I have a feeling Prodigy will be amazing as well. Makes sense to cover through Enterprise. But after 3 Kelvin movies, 5 shows in production, and a movie reboot in the upcoming years (?) is hard to ignore, not cover where the franchise is heading in the new decade! :P

Yeah, LDS easily seem to be the stand out star of the new stuff right now. AGAIN, it doesn’t mean everyone loves it (we’re still talking about Star Trek fans lol) but it seem to be the least divisive one, definitely on these boards at least, and really represented a lot of the best parts about classic Star Trek. Being episodic alone was great to have again! I can’t wait to rewatch it.

I’m equally excited for SNW and Prodigy! SNW hopefully will capture more of a TOS vibe or at least give us some fun adventures aboard the original Enterprise again. And Prodigy will bring back Janeway and get to have something for kids. I’m hoping that will just be a fun adventure show as well. And MAYBE aboard another Voyager (there are 11 of them now ;)). And I have a feeling we will see both more TOS and VOY characters pop up on both shows in time.

But yeah it’s a great time to be a fan. I can be just as pessimistic and cynical as everyone else, but I always look ahead and just imagine how great the possibilities can be. Hopefully it’s going to be so much fun with all the shows coming and exploring everything from the 23rd to the 32nd century hopefully within the year! And we still don’t know when Prodigy takes place. Just insane!

You are absolutely right. Amazing how LDS they got it right, right from the start!? This show is here to stay. I am sure we will see an animated or real life movie. It is the perfect continuation during the time of STNG, without the restrains from the Bernam era. :P

It’d be weird to celebrate 55 years of Star Trek by only covering the first 39 years.

Yeah you’re right, but we had the 54th anniversary last year with CBS having special events with all the shows and the Kelvin movies were totally ignored. And yes the companies had already merged again. I just worry they may get left out of this. For some reason, they just seem to feel more disconnected these days from the rest of the franchise. Hopefully that won’t be the case! I want them represented more too even if certain fans want to forget them.

Mark Altman is OG Trek lore; the successor to the David Gerrolds of the Trekverse, the Bjo Trimbles; fully conversant in 80s cultural moment. So many good articles in genre mags, and the short lived Sci Fi Universe, excellent. So glad he’s around.

I hope this show will be on some streaming platform. The obvious is Paramount +. Here’s hoping since I unplugged years ago.

As long as it will still be available on History I will be happy.

Besides, Isn’t History, along with a number of the other cable channels putting their stuff on some new streaming service anyway?

COUNT ME IN! LET’S GO!

It’s literally called the Nacelle Company.

Hope being in the UK I’ll be able to find it out.

Birth of TOS. The wilderness years, ‘trek’ becomes a cultural phenomenon. Revival, OS movies. TNG. Spin offs, Kelvin timeline. Disc, LD, SNW…

Eight parts, though. So I’d amend your layout to be like this…

  • To Boldly Go: TOS
  • Where No Show Has Gone Before: Reruns/Conventions/Cultural Phenomenon
  • Rebirth: TAS/Titans Movie/Phase II
  • Course Change: Phase II becomes TMP and the TOS movie era
  • Lightning Strikes Twice: TNG
  • A Universe of Star Trek: DS9/VOY/ENT/TNG movies, even a nod to Galaxy Quest
  • What’s Old is New: The Kelvinverse movies
  • The Next Frontier: DSC/PIC/LDS/SNW and Fan Productions

I’d like to see DS9 get its own episode, but I don’t think that’s “in the cards”.

Nice subtitles for each part

Aliens did it.

If feels like nearly everything that can be said about Star Trek has already been said. However, if this thing can unearth some new tidbits never revealed before, more power to them. I’ll certainly be checking it out.

Discovery Season 5 is Taking a Huge Swing With Star Trek Canon

Get out your space history books.

Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Crusher (Gates McFadden) in "The Chase," in 1993.

Why do so many Star Trek aliens look like humans? The real-world explanation is that way back in 1964, Gene Roddenberry said the format of Star Trek would focus on stories that took place on “parallel worlds.” This didn’t mean Trek was an alternate universe-hopping show, but that allegorically, the people encountered by the Enterprise were humanoid, thus making the stories easier to write and understand (and, from a budget perspective, easier to make). But there’s an in-universe explanation for this, too.

In 1993, Star Trek: The Next Generation devoted an episode to answering this big question. And now, 31 years later, Star Trek: Discovery is doubling down with a Season 5 storyline that serves as a direct sequel to that story. Here’s what this means and why it matters. Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episodes 1 and 2.

The return of Star Trek’s Progenitors

The Progenitor in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation.'

The Progenitor’s message in the Next Generation episode “The Chase.”

At the end of Discovery Season 5, Episode 1, “Red Directive,” we learn that the data the crew has been assigned to protect is connected to discoveries made by a Romulan scientist in the year 2369. Season 5 happens roughly 820 years after that date, but as Kovich (David Cronenberg) tells Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), this information has been kept hidden for centuries. Why?

Well, in “The Chase,” Picard, Crusher, and the Enterprise-D crew — along with representatives from the Cardassians, Klingons, and Romulans — discovered an ancient message coded within DNA that revealed everyone descended from the same ancient aliens. The Progenitors, as their message explains, “...seeded the primordial oceans of many worlds, where life was in its infancy. The seed codes directed your evolution toward a physical form resembling ours.”

Captain Burnham is floored by this information, which makes sense since she’s originally from the 23rd century, and her pre-time travel adventures in Starfleet predate Picard’s by about 100 years. But Burnham’s ignorance of the Progenitors isn’t because she and the Discovery crew are time travelers. There’s another reason why this has all been classified.

Discovery’s new God-mode tech

Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Burnham in 'Discovery' Season 5.

Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is racing to find the most powerful Trek tech of all time.

The fact that most humanoid-looking life in Star Trek descended from an ancient alien species isn’t a new revelation to longtime Trek fans. Even Original Series episodes “Return to Tomorrow” and “The Paradise Syndrom” hinted that several species originated thanks to some kind of organized panspermia . What is new is that the technology the Progenitors used to create life on thousands of worlds has been found.

In Discovery’s “Red Directive,” the journal left by the Romulan scientist is just the first piece of the puzzle. The larger mission is to find the technology the Progenitors developed millions of years ago, and so Discovery has revealed the most powerful technology in all of Trek canon to date. In The Wrath of Khan , we got the Genesis Device , a tech capable of instantly terraforming planets. In Voyager’s “Year of Hell,” the Kremin weapon ship pushed entire planets out of the spacetime continuum, altering history in the blink of an eye.

But those examples of super-tech were unstable. What’s interesting about the ancient Progenitor tech is that it obviously works . Discovery’s imperative to find the tech is classic Trek: if the ability to seed life on a planetary scale falls into the wrong hands, the galaxy could be changed forever. In the grand tradition of Star Trek, the biggest superweapons aren’t planet-destroying superweapons, but something that could redefine and rewrite life itself.

How STAR TREK: DISCOVERY’S Final Season Continues a Classic NEXT GENERATION Story

Star Trek: Discovery has embarked on its final season, presenting Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew with a new mystery that links directly to a classic episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1993 that Jonathan Frakes directed . It’s a mystery that Star Trek canon hasn’t touched on in over 30 years. Let’s unpack how these two stories separated by 800 years connect.

Discovery’s Final Season Ties Directly into The Next Generation Episode “The Chase”

In the sixth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation , a storyline changed everything we knew about the Trek universe. The episode “The Chase,” written by Joe Menosky and Ronald D. Moore, introduced us to Professor Richard Galen (Norman Lloyd). He was a mentor to Captain Jean-Luc Picard when he was a cadet at Starfleet Academy, and Picard’s professor of archaeology. Galen hoped his star pupil would follow in his footsteps and become an archaeologist himself. However, Picard chose a life in Starfleet instead, forcing a wedge between teacher and student. But in this episode, Professor Galen reunited with Picard, who had become captain of the Enterprise . Galen hoped his former protégé would help him solve one last riddle—one with galactic implications.

Picard was thrilled to see his old mentor after so many decades. Galen told Picard he made a profound archaeological discovery that would change what everyone knew about intelligent life in the Milky Way galaxy. He requested Picard’s help, as he was too elderly to complete the cross-planet mission alone. But Jean-Luc couldn’t bring himself to leave his command and chose to remain on the Enterprise -D , infuriating Galen. When Galen attempted the mission alone, he died in the process because of hostile forces trying to steal his research. A dying Galen tasked Picard with finishing his work, leaving Jean-Luc with a mission and with a series of number blocks discovered by Galen to decipher.

Captain Picard Discovered All Humanoid Races in Star Trek Share DNA

After Picard studied the mysterious number blocks, he realized the fragments were all compatible DNA strands, discovered on different worlds across the known galaxy. Picard eventually believed it was an embedded genetic pattern across several different species—human, Vulcan, Romulan, Cardassian, and many others. Captain Picard realized an early interstellar race that pre-dated all other known civilizations by billions (perhaps trillions) of years left the DNA strands on various worlds.

Eventually, the Klingons, Cardassians, and Romulans joined the hunt to solve the riddle of the DNA fragments, thinking it the solution would lead to some powerful weapon. They all convened on a remote, uninhabited world and agreed to link their findings. This triggered a holographic message by an extremely ancient humanoid race, who revealed they seeded most worlds in the galaxy with their genetic code. This advanced species’ DNA exists in all major Star Trek races. That’s why they are all (mostly) humanoid and can cross-breed. The Klingons and Cardassians scoffed at the revelation. But Picard and the Romulan Captain realized how monumental the discovery was. Sadly, Star Trek: The Next Generation never mentioned this huge revelation again, nor did any later Star Trek series. Until now, that is, because it’s come up on Star Trek: Discovery .

Discovery Must Find the Technology of the Ancient Progenitors

In the first episode of Discovery ‘s final season, “Red Directive,” we learn that centuries after Picard completed Galen’s work, a Starfleet probe finds an 800-year-old Romulan vessel. Starfleet sends Discovery  on a top-secret mission to retrieve the ship. Even Captain Burnham doesn’t know what is in the ship that Starfleet needs her to retrieve. But scavengers get there first, and steal a Romulan puzzle box stored in a cloaked vault on the ship. After a wild goose chase across the quadrant, Discovery finds the contents of the puzzle box, the findings of a long-dead Romulan scientist. His holographic message says no one must find what his research has led him to.

Eventually Starfleet’s Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) reveals the classified nature of Burnham’s mission to her. The ancient Romulan scientist was Dr. Valec. He was on the landing party with his crew in The Next Generation episode “The Chase.” Dr. Valec was one of only a handful of beings present for Picard’s discovery. Valec eventually found the technology of the Progenitors, as they were now called by Starfleet, and the advanced science they used to design humanoid life in the galaxy.

When the Romulan scientist’s location was lost 800 years prior, all access to that tech was thought lost too. Clearly, Starfleet chose to keep Picard’s findings classified for centuries. But now Starfleet has to find it before it falls into the wrong hands. Whoever has the technology of the Progenitors could reshape life in the galaxy to their liking. And this new chase will serve as the main storyline in Discovery’s final year, finally addressing something Star Trek  canon seemingly forgot about. Here’s hoping this long-lost bit of Trek  storytelling leads to a truly compelling season of Discovery.

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 5, Episode 1 of “ Star Trek : Discovery,” now streaming on Paramount+.

Popular on Variety

Kovich’s explanation evokes the classic “ Star Trek: The Next Generation ” episode “The Chase” from 1993 in which Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) — along with teams of Romulans, Klingons and Cardassians — learn that all humanoid life in the galaxy was created by a single species that existed billions of years earlier, and seeded thousands of planets with the DNA to pass along their legacy. (Along with presenting a profound vision of the origins of life, the episode also provided an imaginative explanation for why almost all the aliens in “Star Trek” basically look like humans with different kinds of forehead ridges.)

Kovich tells Burnham that the Romulan scientist was part of a team sent to discover exactly how these aliens — whom they call the Progenitors — made this happen; the object they’re seeking winds up being one part of a brand new “chase,” this time in the 32nd century, to find the Progenitors’ technology before it can fall into the wrong hands.

“I remember watching that episode and at the end of it just being blown away that there was this huge idea where we all come from,” Paradise says. “And then they’re going to have another mission the next week. I found myself wondering, ‘Well, then what? What happened? What do we do with this information? What does it mean?’”

Originally, Paradise says the “Discovery” writers’ room discussed evoking the Progenitors in Season 4, when the Discovery meets an alien species, the 10-C, who live outside of the galaxy and are as radically different from humans as one could imagine. “As we dug deeper into the season itself, we realized that it was too much to try and get in,” Paradise says.

Instead, they made the Progenitors the engine for Season 5. “Burnham and some of our other characters are on this quest for personal meaning,” Paradise says. Searching for the origins of life itself, she adds, “feels like a big thematic idea that fits right in with what we’re exploring over the course of the season, and what our characters are going through.”

That meant that Paradise finally got to help come up with the answers to the questions about “The Chase” that had preoccupied her when she was younger. “We had a lot of fun talking about what might’ve happened when [Picard] called back to headquarters and had to say, ‘Here’s what happened today,’” she says. “We just built the story out from there.”

Although unnamed at the time, the Progenitors were first introduced in TNG season 6, episode 20, "The Chase," when Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) helped uncover a message left by one of the ancient humanoids.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3 , "Jinaal," written by Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Wilkinson and directed by Andi Armaganian, Captain Burnham and her crew continue to gather the puzzle pieces that will presumably lead them to the Progenitors' technology. This journey takes the USS Discovery to the planet Trill, where Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) acts as a host for the consciousness of an 800-year-old Trill named Jinaal Bix. Jinaal reveals more information about what happened after Picard received the Progenitors' message in the 24th century. While "The Chase" explained why many Star Trek aliens are humanoid, the implications of Picard's discovery were never fully explored.

Star Trek: Discovery’s TNG Connection Explained - "The Chase" & Who Are The Progenitors?

Star trek: discovery finally updates what happened after tng’s “the chase”, the federation didn't ignore captain picard's discovery..

When Captain Picard unlocked the Progenetors' message in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Chase," the Cardassians, Klingons, and Romulans also had representatives present. In the message, the ancient humanoid (Salome Jens) revealed that Progenitor "scientists seeded the primordial oceans of many worlds," meaning all humanoid life originated from a single ancestor. The Progenitors hoped this information would bring peace among humanoid species, but the Cardassians and Klingons reacted negatively to the message. Nevertheless, the United Federation of Planets and many other species would undoubtedly be interested in these Progenitors and the technology that allowed them to create all humanoid life.

The Federation President during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was Jaresh-Inyo (Herschel Sparber), and he may have been who oversaw finding the Progenitors' technology.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is finally addressing this mystery, and Janaal reveals more about how the Federation responded to the discovery of the Progenitors. The Federation President secretly assembled a team of six scientists from different Federation and non-Federation worlds, including Janaal and the Romulan Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeman) , to research the Progenitors and the message Picard found. This team eventually found a technology "beyond anything [they had] ever seen," but one of the scientists was horribly killed when he tried to activate it. The scientists then made a pact that they would do everything in their power to keep the Progenitors' technology hidden until some future date when the galaxy was at peace.

Janaal does not reveal the names of the other scientists, and he says that they removed their names from "every database [they] could access." This explains why these characters and their mission have never been mentioned in Star Trek before.

How “The Chase” Tied Into DS9’s Dominion War & Star Trek: Insurrection

Why didn't jinaal give the progenitor technology to the federation.

After Jinaal reveals how he and his fellow scientists hid the Progenitor technology, Captain Burnham asks why they didn't give it to the Federation. Jinaal responds that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Dominion War was raging at the time, so "everyone saw an enemy in everyone else." Despite the trust Michael places in the Federation and Starfleet, these organizations have not always been above reproach. During the Dominion War, there were fears that Changelings could infiltrate the Federation even at the highest levels, but it wasn't just Changelings that posed a threat. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 4, episode 11, "Homefront," and episode 12, "Paradise Lost," for example, Admiral Leyton (Robert Foxworth) staged a coup against Federation President Jaresh-Inyo.

Starfleet could not be trusted with technology as powerful as the Progenitors'.

Leyton's plan to initiate a military takeover of Earth ultimately failed, but it proved that Starfleet could not be trusted with technology as powerful as the Progenitors'. In Star Trek: Insurrection , another Starfleet flag officer, Admiral Dougherty (Anthony Zerbe), attempted to forcibly move the peaceful Ba'ku people in order to access the healing properties of the area of space known as the Briar Patch. The Federation of the 32nd century in Star Trek: Discovery seems better prepared to safeguard the Progenitors' technology, but the high-stakes treasure hunt still has everyone on edge.

Star Trek: Discovery Ends an Era With Season 5

The showrunners and stars on how they’re taking the disco to the final frontier one last time..

Tara Bennett Avatar

Seven years ago, Star Trek: Discovery debuted as the seventh Star Trek series in the illustrious and long-running science fiction franchise. Discovery, or Disco as it is affectionately known, was also the first Trek anything to debut on a streaming service. Its success made episodic Star Trek viable again after a 12-year dry spell, and now fans have a robust lineup of all kinds of Trek series on Paramount+ as a result.

But all starship missions eventually come to an end. So with Season 5 of Discovery, Captain Michael Burnham and her USS Discovery crew embark on their final adventure. We spoke to some of the creative team about what’s coming for Burnham, Book, Saru and more.

From Season Finale to Series Finale

After the turmoil and complex resolution of the Dark Matter Anomaly story arc in Season 4, the fifth season opens with many Discovery characters contemplating both personal and professional change.

While showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise told IGN that they didn’t go into writing the season knowing it would be the show’s last, their instincts to create transition points for much of their ensemble ended up lending itself to a consequential final season.

“Alex and I talked about it,” says Paradise. “And this season we explore such big themes and such big ideas. And in some ways, it felt like if [the end] were going to happen, this was the right season for that to happen because it feels almost like an ending.”

While the showrunners didn’t find out that this was the last season of the show until they had already finished shooting the body of the season itself, the studio wanted to give Captain Burnham and the Disco crew a proper send-off. And so they let Paradise, Kurtzman, and the team fine-tune the Season 5 finale so that it could also serve as a series finale.

“The studio and the network were kind enough to allow us to go back and shoot some additional material so that we could wrap up the series itself,” continues Paradise. “So I feel like if people didn't know that, they would come in thinking that we had planned from the beginning to make [it] the final season. And it's exciting that the way it ends feels satisfying and fulfilling in that way.”

For Sonequa Martin-Green, who stars as Captain Burnham, wrapping up the show was the culmination of an experience for the actress that she’ll always feel lucky to have had.

“My goodness, the journey of growth, the journey of evolution – you can parallel Burnham's life with my own, this time that I had as Michael Burnham and then as Captain Michael Burnham,” says Martin-Green. “My goodness, I'll never be the same again. And I am just grateful because I feel that God blessed me with an opportunity to act out some of the things that he was teaching me.”

The Captain Conundrum

A starship operates only as well as its captain, which bodes well for both Discovery and Captain Michael Burnham, who is arguably hitting her professional stride at this point in aiding Earth’s re-entry into the Federation. Personally, it’s a little more complicated as she’s still wrestling with the open-ended separation from her partner, Cleveland "Book" Booker (David Ajala), after he chose to leave and help those impacted by the Dark Matter Anomaly last season.

“Stepping into Season 5, that relationship is fractured, and will it heal?” ponders Ajala. “Knowing these two individuals, I think they will put their best foot forward to try and make it happen. But there's still creases in the relationship. However, the two of them believe in each other. And so far as there's life in Book's body, he will always support all of Michael Burnham's endeavors. And likewise, she would do the same for him. So having said that, these two were just meant to be kindred spirits.”

Surprisingly, matters of the heart are also top of mind for Discovery Captain… err, First Officer Saru. But first, Doug Jones, who plays the Kelpien character, told us that rank issue is also complicated.

“I had reached captain status in Season 3, and I was captain of starship Discovery,” explains the actor. “And then in Season 4, with our special mission that we were on with the 10-C and exploring all that… I felt that I was needed and that Michael Burnham, with our brother/sister supportive relationship, that I would not be a captain, but be her Number One. Is it logical to keep two captains on the bridge of a ship? Can it go on forever? Should it go on forever? So Season 5 is an exploration of what else can Saru do.”

And what would any new position mean for the deepening relationship between Saru and the Vulcan President of Ni'Var, T’Rina? First introduced in Season 3, T’Rina has become an increasingly important part of Saru’s life.

“I have been courting the lovely President T'Rina this whole time, played by Tara Rosling, whom I adore,” says Jones. “And so, yes, that's evolving at the same time as the career. Can they evolve together? Can we find a blend in the two? That's our struggle, and that's our little issue to get through. It's kind of like a Hallmark movie.”

The Disco’s Crew Highs… and Cast Lows

One of the strengths of Disco has been its varied crew of characters with their own stories and arcs that have kept audiences invested in the show. One of the best relationships that has unfolded across all five seasons has been the partnership between Paul Stamets and Hugh Culber, played by Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz.

In this last season, Cruz said their unique relationship continues to grow, but Culber will get his own solo adventure that will surprise long-time viewers.

“I'm excited for people to see a different, new side of Culber,” says the actor. “I can say that. He has definitely experienced a lot of insane things in the five seasons and Season 5 is definitely up there with it. So I'm excited for [fans] to see him in a new light.”

With Lt. Silvia Tilly, actress Mary Wiseman remains a little giddy about her character’s love for her Captain, Oh Captain Burnham, and an upcoming memorable away mission together.

“I'm excited for people to see Tilly go on a very special adventure with her best friend, Michael Burnham,” says Wiseman, while Blu del Barrio promises that, much like Culber, their character Ensign Adira Tal will get to experience a shift that will challenge how everyone sees them going forward.

“Adira [goes] on a mission that they would probably, maybe from the past seeing Adira since they joined the ship, would probably imagine anybody else on the ship being in that position before they were in that position,” says del Barrio.

Of course, series ending also mean some of the cast’s wish-list episodes or arcs will remain unexplored. While much has been covered by the cast over the past seven years, there are a few clear, if good-natured grievances to be aired about what might have been if Discovery continued to cross the galaxies.

“How is it that we did not get the musical episode!?” laughs Cruz, clearly referring to the Strange New Worlds musical episode from last year. “I'm pissed off, O.K.!”

“I did not ever get to have a mirror Universe Adira and I'm so sad about that,” adds del Barrio. “It breaks my heart!”

But as any true Trekker knows, never say never with any crew in the Star Trek universe…
