Tata Harrier Global NCAP crash test image

Since 2014, several Tata Motors cars, including the Nano, Zest, Nexon, Altroz, Tiago, Tigor and the Punch, have been put through Global NCAP crash tests. Notable by their absence, however, were the carmaker's flagship SUVs, the Harrier and Safari. Now though, with their facelifts, both Harrier and Safari have undergone the crash tests and have secured a full 5-star safety rating.

These are the first Tata models to be tested under the new, more stringent Global NCAP testing protocol. This also means that its scores cannot be compared to rivals like the Mahindra XUV700 , which was tested under the older protocol.

  • Harrier, Safari scored 33.05 points in adult protection
  • Gets 45 out of 49 points for child protection
  • Both SUVs were also tested for side impact protection

Tata Harrier, Safari: adult occupant crash test rating

The new Tata Harrier and Safari scored 33.05 out of 34 points for adult occupant protection resulting in a 5-star rating. Testers rated the protection offered on both models to the driver's and passenger’s head and neck as good, while protection for the driver’s and passenger’s chest was judged to be adequate.

In the side impact test with a deformable barrier, the Harrier and Safari facelifts had “good protection” for head, chest, abdomen and pelvis, according to the global vehicle safety watchdog. On the side pole impact tests, the SUVs get curtain airbags as standard and meet the fitment requirements, showing good protection to the head and pelvis, marginal protection to the chest and adequate protection to the abdomen.

As far as the bodyshell goes, the result sheet mentioned that as “stable” on both SUVs, and capable of withstanding further loadings.

Tata Harrier, Safari: child occupant crash test rating

The Harrier and Safari facelifts scored 45 points out of 49 in the child occupant protection tests, earning a 5-star rating. This includes a full 12 out of 12 for the CRS (child restraint system) installation and the maximum dynamic score of 24.

Global NCAP tested the SUVs with dummies of an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old child, both seated facing rearward. They were placed in the car using i-size anchorages and a support leg, and both helped in preventing head exposure in a frontal crash. The CRS offered full protection in a side impact crash,  and the testers noted that the SUVs have ISOFIX mounting points in the outer rear seats in their second row.

2023 Tata Safari facelift review: Family car with bachelor's spirit

safari 2023 safety rating

  • Decent styling updates on the outside
  • Much more premium cabin than before
  • No AWD or petrol engine option
  • Tata Safari gets subtle but significant updates to its exterior styling while the cabin has been armed with newer features.

Tata Safari

The Tata Safari is the flagship model for the Indian car maker that was first introduced in the country in 2021. At that time, the focus was as much on drawing inspiration from an iconic name as was on putting a brand-new model on a pedestal. This eventually resulted in the introduction of a three-row vehicle that promised SUV-like style but claimed MPV-like comfort. Fast forward just two years and the updated Tata Safari has a new wardrobe to show off in 2023.

Tata has been steadily increasing its focus on passenger vehicles that not just drive well and have top-notch safety credentials but look cutting-edge as well. Or at least extremely contemporary. Just look at the models like Altroz hatchback, the updated Nexon compact SUV and Nexon EV or even the latest Harrier SUV. Here are cars across different body types that showcase the current best that Tata Motors' designers have to offer. And it is a treat for sure. Towards this end, the new Tata Safari has been given a noticeable makeover as well even though it obviously retains its OG flavour.

And then there is the pivotal factor of in-car features - the more, the better, even if you end up not using a significant chunk of these in the long run. The Koreans started the trend and rivals like Tata Motors are only too keen to hit back. The Tata Safari, therefore, was always going to be pampered and peppered with features galore. So how do all of these factors come together to manifest in the flagship product from Tata Motors? Here is the first-drive review of the 2023 Tata Safari facelift:

Also watch: 2023 Tata Safari review: Family SUV with bachelor spirit?

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Exterior

The updated Safari looks a tad bit more sporty compared to the outgoing model, while still retaining its largely sophisticated exterior design language. The face, for instance, has been reworked and now sports a new grille, a reworked vertical housing for the fog lamps and headlights, and a stretched DRL bar that connects the sequential DRLs on either side. In a nutshell, the comprehensive updates of the front fascia have given the SUV a butch yet premium look, making it significantly distinctive from the previous model which it has replaced.

Tata Safari

There is not much change in the side profile of the new Tata Safari SUV, apart from the reworked alloy design on the 19-inch wheels. The design is likely to evoke different reactions from different viewpoints instead of inviting unilateral awe. But what works really well is how Tata Motors' designers have managed to snub the use of chrome elements and still come up with a visually striking profile. Overall, the side profile of the SUV looks slightly curvy and pretty clean. The subtly flared wheel arches give the SUV a bold and muscular look, while the new design alloy wheels enhance the premium sporty feel.

There are no chrome elements on the rear of the Safari either, where a stretched LED bar connects the two tail lights and runs all across the length of the trunk door which, by the way, offers powered powered-open option. Besides that, the tailgate looks pretty sculpted thanks to the glossy black panel running through the centre of the trunk that also houses the sleek LED bar. The integrated roof spoiler and chunky black bumper with a thick metal skid plate are other design elements that come enhancing the SUV's bold visual appearance.

Tata Safari

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Interior

The new Tata Safari's cabin has become much more premium now and a slew of updates to the feature list as well as to the upholstery lend the vehicle a premium appeal that would have otherwise been restricted to models in segments above the one this car competes in. The top-end Accomplished variant - or persona, as Tata Motors refers to it, comes with a dual-tone colour scheme inside the cabin but the White theme on the seats would be quite hard to maintain in pristine condition.

Tata Safari

The layered dashboard now gets an artificial wood panel which is a nice touch while the central section is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit that is intuitive, puts out clear feed from the 360-degree cameras and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The map feed can also be redirected to the all-digital driver display screen for better navigation which now sports customisable layouts.

The steering wheel has also been updated and is now a four-spoke set with mounted controls and has an illuminated Tata logo on it. This is certainly another nice touch from Tata Motors enhancing the premium quotient inside the cabin of the new Safari SUV. The updated steering wheel is quite easy to operate and control the advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) functionalities that this car offers, courtesy of the layout of the control buttons on the wheel. On that note, the new Tata Safari SUV offers 11 ADAS functions in a further bid to aid driving safety and convenience.

There are plenty of other convenience features that the new Safari packs as well, whether it is the dual-zone climate control function, air purification system, ventilated seats at the front and middle, voice-activated panoramic sunroof, Alexa to Home technology or remote access to the vehicle.

Space remains the same inside the cabin of the new Tata Safari, which means that the SUV continues to be a decently spacious vehicle for passengers in all three rows. Space in that third row, however, continues to come at the cost of a compromised boot storage space. But that's really expected, right?

Tata Safari

Overall, the new Tata Safari SUV come as a very well-appointed vehicle with quite a lot of space for comfortable long trips but now, at least in the top-spec version, is significantly more premium than before.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Safety

Tata Motors has been taking the front row across different segments in the Indian passenger vehicle market over the last few years when it comes to making safe cars. While the modern Tata cars come with a wide range of safety features, they also come with robust build quality as well. The Tata Safari facelift too comes following the same strategy.

The Tata Safari comes well-equipped with a host of safety features designed to provide peace of mind to the occupants. Some of the advanced safety technologies available onboard the Tata Safari facelift include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, electronic parking brake with auto hold, rain-sensing wipers, rollover mitigation, hill hold control, 360-degree view HD camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, front collision prevention function, blind spot detection etc. Moreover, it also gets features like ABS with EBD, Isofix child seat anchors etc.

Here are some of the key safety features onboard the Tata Safari.

  • Seven airbags with six as standard
  • Electronic stability control as standard
  • Three-point seatbelts in all rows
  • Seatbelt reminder for all passengers
  • Isofix tethers
  • Seatbelts with retractor, pre-tensioner, load limiter and anchor pretensioner
  • Reinforced cabin structure promising to provide symmetric crash performance and side pole impact

Update: Keeping the trend of introducing safe cars in India, Tata Motors has delivered again with the new Safari and Harrier, as both these two SUVs have achieved five-star Global NCAP safety ratings for adult and child occupant categories. Besides that, the Tata Safari and the Tata Harrier SUVs scored a five-star safety rating at the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP or BNCAP) as well. While announcing the test results Bharat NCAP authorities have announced that the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier have scored five-star ratings with top-notch adult and child safety ratings in frontal, side and pole side impact tests.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Performance

Here is where the updated Tata Safari SUV could have been improved so much more. But isn't. So much has already been mentioned - and experienced - about the 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor under the hood and the choice between an automatic gearbox and a six-speed manual stick. Yes, the turbocharged diesel motor could have been refined further. Yes, the grunt is still uncomfortably palpable when pushing the vehicle to its limits. But yes, the new Tata Safari - especially with the automatic transmission - is still quite a fun car to drive and has enough power to get a move on when required. The suspension continues to hold its own on rough roads and the steering still has a nice heft to aid matters.

Tata Safari

But why this otherwise very capable model does not also come with a petrol engine under its hood is beyond the comprehension of many. Tata Motors is almost snubbing the petrol-buying audience in the country, a group that is steadily increasing. There is also no 4x4 option for the updated version of the SUV because the platform on which the new Tata Safari is based on does not allow for it. But here is also a miss, especially as this model does go up against authentic off-road options in the market as well.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Verdict

Tata Safari

The updated Tata Safari is a big step up in terms of its exterior design and cabin features and quality when compared to the previous model. Space has always been this car's strength but the additions to the feature list arm this SUV to the absolute teeth.

The diesel motor and the automatic transmission work extremely well in tandem but as mentioned previously, Tata Motors ought to strongly consider a petrol option for the model as well, especially considering the number of buyers favouring the petrol engines are increasing across India over the last few years

2023 Tata Harrier, Safari earn five-star Global NCAP ratings

2023 Tata Harrier, Safari earn five-star Global NCAP ratings

Tata Motors has reached a major milestone with its revamped Harrier and Safari SUVs, earning a five-star rating in the latest Global NCAP crash tests. Not only did the duo achieve the top rating, but they also set a record for the highest score by an India-made vehicle in the newer, more rigorous protocol. This accomplishment comes as the safety watchdog wraps up its #SaferCarsForIndia campaign, paving the way for India's own Bharat NCAP test program.

High scores in adult and child occupant protection

High scores in adult and child occupant protection

Scoring 33.05 out of 34 points for adult occupant protection, the Harrier and Safari surpassed the previous record held by the Mahindra Scorpio-N at 29.28 points. They even outshined the Volkswagen Virtus and SKODA SLAVIA 's score of 29.71 points. On top of that, both SUVs earned a five-star rating for child occupant protection, racking up 45 out of 49 points. The updated test protocol also put the vehicles through a side pole impact test.

Structural reinforcements and enhanced safety features

To achieve these exceptional scores, Tata Motors claims to have made significant structural enhancements to the updated Harrier and Safari models. The automaker has incorporated more high-strength steel, particularly in the load paths of both vehicles' structures. Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer of Tata Motors' passenger vehicle division, said the company has added several high-strength steel and hot-stamped parts, six airbags as standard, and made changes for side and pole impact tests to reinforce the passenger cell.

SUVs are set to face Bharat NCAP tests now

Savarkar confirmed that Tata Motors plans to send the two SUVs for Bharat NCAP tests soon. He also highlighted the company's focus on active safety systems and pedestrian protection, stating that the vehicles are designed to meet safety requirements beyond Global NCAP standards. Now, five of the seven Tata passenger vehicles currently on sale have a five-star crash test rating from Global NCAP. This makes Tata Motors the leading mass carmaker in India with the highest number of five-star-rated models.

2023 Tata Safari Review: Is This Tata's Best Flagship Yet?

safari 2023 safety rating

Tata Motors has gone all out to give the Safari SUV a jaw-dropping makeover. But, is that enough?

Tata Motors has pulled out all the stops to revamp its flagship SUV, the Tata Safari. Following the trend of refreshing other SUVs in their lineup, Tata has gone all out in giving the Safari a jaw-dropping makeover. And the result, is nothing short of awe-inspiring, leaving enthusiasts and onlookers alike smitten with its all-new look. But, is that enough? We find out.

Tata's endeavour to set the Safari apart from the Harrier is immediately noticeable in the 2023 model. They've retained the split headlamp design, but this time, it's positioned vertically and serves the dual purpose of sequential turn indicators. The Safari branding is a delightful touch. The full-length LED light bar, especially when illuminated at night, exudes an undeniable allure. The LED treatment of the DRLs has been refined, giving it a sleek and aggressive appearance.

2023 Tata Safari

Similar to the Harrier, the Safari introduces a fresh grille, which appears somewhat like a 3D print from a distance. However, what sets it apart are the exclusive golden inserts, a signature of the Cosmic Gold paint scheme. While the upper section of the vehicle's profile remains largely unchanged, the lower section bears substantial differences.

safari 2023 safety rating

The Safari maintains its familiar profile, but the introduction of new 19-inch alloy wheels adds a touch of allure to its overall look. At the rear, the design is now more engaging with a broad light bar that seamlessly connects to the new taillamp setup. The welcome function is a thoughtful addition, enhancing the overall user experience.

2023 Tata Safari

Tech & Interior

The infusion of modernity doesn't stop at the exterior of the 2023 Tata Safari. The interior has undergone subtle yet notable enhancements while retaining the familiar dashboard layout. However, these updates introduce a touch of sophistication that elevates the overall experience. The curved layout of the dashboard, in particular, exudes a refined and elegant ambience that complements the overall theme.

2023 Tata Safari

Stepping inside, you'll notice that the new touchscreen has been borrowed from the Red Dark Edition of the Safari, accompanied by a few additional creature comforts. The climate control system now boasts a touch-based panel with a dual-zone setting, catering to the comfort of front passengers. Meanwhile, at the centre console, the introduction of a new gear shifter with shift-by-wire technology is a noteworthy improvement.

2023 Tata Safari

In addition, the rotary knob for selecting drive modes is also new, flanked by dedicated switches for Eco and Sport modes. It's worth noting that the placement of this control array might take a bit of getting used to.

2023 Tata Safari

Safety Features

In the realm of safety, the 2023 Tata Safari closely aligns with its Harrier counterpart. In tandem with the robust OMEGARC platform, Tata has fortified this SUV with an extensive array of safety features. These encompass six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), hill hold control, traction control, rollover mitigation, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and 3-point seat belts equipped with reminders, all as standard offerings. The top-spec Safari gets 7 airbags.

2023 Tata Safari

Moreover, you'll find an impressive collection of 11 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) functions, though this count reduces to 10 if you opt for the manual transmission. It's worth noting that these ADAS features are available from the Adventure A+ persona variant onwards.

2023 Tata Safari

As for the all-important safety ratings, that's a bit of a waiting game. We'll be among the first to inform you once the SUV undergoes testing, whether it's through the Global program or Bharat NCAP.

Engine & Transmission

Beneath the hood, the 2023 Tata Safari retains its trusty diesel engine, with no petrol option available as of yet. However, there's a significant enhancement in the form of a shift-by-wire system for the automatic variant, developed in-house by Tata, even though the gear shifter itself is sourced from Hyundai. The key question is, how does this affect the driving experience?

2023 Tata Safari

The introduction of shift-by-wire technology has made a palpable difference in driving the Safari. Shifts are now remarkably smoother and nearly seamless, effectively mitigating turbo lag. On the open highway, the gearbox exhibits a longer ratio before initiating a shift, optimizing torque utilization for swift overtaking. This power delivery is distributed evenly, enhancing the driving experience. In urban settings, the Safari performs admirably, thanks to its fluid gear shifts.

2023 Tata Safari

While the Safari's diesel engine gets the job done, it might feel somewhat less refined compared to the engines of its competitors, especially in terms of noise. Additionally, the suspension has room for improvement, as smaller road imperfections and potholes can be felt within the cabin. For those residing in areas with less-than-ideal road conditions, this might be a noticeable downside.

2023 Tata Safari

So, should you consider the new Tata Safari? To put it frankly, if you're not looking to invest in a larger SUV like the Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan, or Skoda Kodiaq, the answer is a resounding yes!

2023 Tata Safari

With its most recent update, Tata has taken a substantial leap forward, although you should be prepared for a higher price tag. Nonetheless, even with the premium pricing, it's likely that the competition will start to feel the pressure, particularly the Mahindra XUV700 , given its long waiting periods. The Hyundai Alcazar , on the other hand, appears to be lagging behind in terms of updates.

2023 Tata Safari

While the absence of a petrol option might affect the Safari's appeal to some, Tata has certainly entered the fray with a compelling offering. It's shaping up to be a worthy contender in the segment.

Tata Safari Facelift safety features and tech detailed

- Gets ADAS with new features

- Safari has secured GNAP five-star rating

Tata Safari safety equipment summary

Global NCAP has announced a five-star rating for both the Tata Safari and Harrier, which is the highest score for adult and child occupant safety. The top-spec versions of the facelifted Safari are equipped with seven airbags, including frontal dual, driver knee, side curtain, and side chest airbags. The body shell integrity has been rated stable, as the SUV is equipped with seatbelt reminders, belt pre-tensioners, belt load-limiter, ISOFIX anchorages, and the aforementioned airbags. The optional ADAS technologies add to the convenience of the owners and will help take GNCAP’s ‘Safer Cars for India’ program a step ahead.

Facelifted Safari with added features for ADAS

Tata Motors joined the bandwagon of other manufacturers like MG , Mahindra , and Hyundai to offer ADAS on its flagship cars. The Safari now gets more ADAS features in addition to the ones introduced in February 2023. First, the facelifted SUV comes with autonomous braking instead of just a warning. As a result, the SUV can stop itself and effectively use adaptive cruise control too. It also gets lane assist instead of just a departure warning. 2023 Tata Safari Standard Safety Features And Variant-wise Comparison

  • 05 November 2023
  • By Saloni Chaudhary

In this article, we’ll take a look at the variant-wise safety features of the 2023 Tata Safari. This will also help us examine the standard safety features of the Safari facelift and the full list of safety features of the Safari top model. Let’s start with the list of Safari facelift Smart safety features.

2023 Tata Safari

Note : To find out which variant you should buy to get the best value for money and ownership experience, you can read our Tata Safari Variant Explained article.

2023 Tata Safari Smart - Base Model Safety Features

Here’s a look at the standard safety features of the 2023 Safari Smart (O):

Following are the safety features you may miss in this variant:

  • Rear parking camera
  • Rear defogger
  • Rear wiper & washer

2023 Tata Safari - Variant Wise Safety Features

Here’s a look at the variant-wise safety features of the Tata Safari:

Even a wide and expensive car like the Safari only gets 2 front and 2 rear parking sensors. When a much smaller Baleno gets 4 sensors on the rear, we expect the brand marketing its cars as the safest to not skimp on something as cheap as 4 parking sensors. Otherwise, it appears quite well loaded from the safety side.

2023 Tata Safari Scores 5-Star GNCAP Safety Rating

The Tata Safari facelift was launched on October 17, 2023 at a price of Rs. 16.19 lakh, and has scored a 5-star rating in the latest Global NCAP test under the Safer Cars for India campaign. The new Tata Safari and Safari facelift are the first Tata models that were tested by Global NCAP.

The new Tata Safari facelift scored 33.05 out of 34 points for adult occupant protection and the Safari facelift scored 45 points out of 49 in the child occupant safety test. It scored a full 12 points for the child restraint system (CRS) and a maximum dynamic score of 24. You can read more about it in the link below.

2023 Tata Safari: 5 pros & 4 cons after a 700 km road trip

car

Tankful to tankful mileage comes to 12.1 km/L in the city which matches what the MID says.

BHPian spaceunicorn recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Finally had a long drive of around 700 km during the last weekend. We took a trip to Guruvayoor (Thrissur, Kerala) from Trivandrum. The Diesel was filled until the auto cut off kicked in. The ODO was at 350 and it took 41.44 liters to fill the tank.

The entire journey was split into three legs. Trivandrum to Kollam, Kollam to Kochi and Kochi to Guruvayoor. The entire stretch of NH is under construction, and you hardly get to see real highways. The initial stretch till Kollam was driven at around 70 - 80 kmph and the mileage was shown as 15.8 in dash. The second stretch was quite hectic with traffic and road construction. Here the mileage was 11.8. The third stretch was like narrow roads and potholes, with construction of NH going on. Here the average mileage was 11.7.

We came back via MC road, where the average mileage came up to 12.8 (its average mileage and not the mileage for that stretch of trip). The drive was quite comfortable, acknowledged by both my wife (Front passenger seat) and Mother, middle left side. Kids too were happy as MC road normally make the elder one a bit claustrophobic, but this was not felt in Safari. Throughout the journey the speed never crossed 85kmph and never put any hard acceleration. FtF showed a mileage of 12.1 kmpl. This almost matched dashboard mileage as well.

  • Very comfortable drive.
  • Music system was extremely good.
  • Good average mileage of around 12.8 (within Kerala, where you dont have any 2 or 3 lane highways and with moderate to heavy traffic mostly).
  • Good road presence. May be because this was the first Safari facelift in Kerala on road.
  • Good sound insulation. Twice I missed ambulance behind me - sound was insulated properly and the music system was quite good - both seems to be the reason.
  • Software glitches - The Music stops for wireless car play(already shared above), The dashboard map navigation fails to detect phone connected to car etc. Had to reset the system three - four times. But nothing alarming.
  • The TPMS is completely wrong - seems it needs to be calibrated. TPMS shows 44 while I checked at a local Tyre shop and ensured 34 for all four Tyres.
  • The Windshield water sprayer is not working as expected -the water spray is focused to the bottom of windshield, and it doesn't even reach the middle. Need to get it corrected during service (already due for the first service at 1000 - 2000 km)
  • Citi Mode sometimes feels quite laggy - sports mode is better and peppier. Not sure about the impact on mileage, i haven't used it extensively.

iRA app update : The iRA app seems to be connected when i turn on the car. It gets disconnected after a few minutes after i turn off the car. I believe it uses my mobile connection to connect and update status while i turn on the car. The purpose of the remote app is not that, I believe. Looks like it may take some time to get that ready.

Gave a good wash to the Lion after the trip:

Only the 2023-24 Subaru Forester earned a good rating in a recent crash prevention test.

In an updated test that evaluated the performance of the crash avoidance systems of 10 popular, small SUVs, few models excelled. Only the 2023-24 Subaru Forester earned a good rating.

The first results of the new vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention testing program, aimed to encourage automakers to improve crash avoidance systems, were announced on Tuesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety , a nonprofit financed by the insurance industry.

“The vast majority of new vehicles now come with automatic emergency braking,” David Harkey, the Insurance Institute’s president, said in a statement, “and our research shows the technology prevents as many as half of all front-to-rear crashes. This new, tougher evaluation targets some of the most dangerous front-to-rear crashes that are still happening.”

The ratings were: good, acceptable, marginal and poor.

The Subaru Forester is the only small SUV that earned a good rating.

The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 garnered an acceptable rating; the Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Compass earned marginal ratings, and the Chevrolet Equinox, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander and Volkswagen Taos were rated poor.

Police deployed to ucla protest clashes after nypd arrests pro palestinian demonstrators at columbia, bird flu h5n1 explained grocery store baby formula other dairy products are safe fda says.

This new program builds on the success of the institute’s original front crash prevention program, researchers said, which only addressed low-speed crashes and only included passenger cars.

The updated test addressed crashes that occurred at higher speeds - of up to 43 mph -and for the first time evaluated how well they detected stopped motorcycles and large trucks, in addition to passenger cars.

Tests were run at three speeds with each vehicle type. The new evaluation reflects a much greater proportion of police-reported front-to-rear crashes, including many that are more severe, researchers said.

In trials, passenger car and motorcycle forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems were evaluated, but only truck forward collision warning systems were assessed.

While real-world data indicate that front crash prevention systems are eliminating higher-speed crashes, according to the report, the original test didn’t provide a way to gauge the performance of specific systems at those higher speeds.

Additional research by the safety group showed that today’s systems are less effective at preventing crashes with motorcycles and medium or heavy trucks than they are at preventing crashes with other passenger vehicles.

During the testing, the Subaru Forester avoided a collision with the passenger car target at every test speed, avoided hitting the motorcycle target at 31 and 37 mph, and slowed by an average of 30 mph before hitting the motorcycle target in the 43 mph tests, researchers said. “The forward collision warning alerts also came more than the required 2.1 seconds before the projected time of impact in all those trials and also in those conducted with the trailer,” according to the report.

“Obviously, crashes that happen at higher speeds are more dangerous,” David Kidd, a senior research scientist at the Insurance Institute who led the development of the new evaluation, said in a statement. “Deadly underride crashes often occur when the struck vehicle is a large truck, and motorcyclists are frequently killed when they’re rear-ended by a passenger car, since their bike offers no protection from the impact.”

How safe is your hospital? See the latest grade for each Philly-area facility in a new national report.

Leapfrog, a hospital rating organization, gave A's to 20 hospitals in the Philadelphia region.

Three Main Line Health hospitals, including Riddle Hospital in Media, have gotten A ratings from the Leapfrog Group for the past four years.

Fewer than half of the hospitals in the Philadelphia area earned top marks for safety this week from the Leapfrog Group, a hospital rating organization.

Leapfrog’s spring 2024 report gave letter grades for safety to some 3,000 hospitals nationally, including 49 in the Philadelphia region, which includes the city’s Pennsylvania suburbs, South Jersey, and Wilmington, Del. Specialty hospitals, such as Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children , were not graded.

The organization bases its grades on more than 30 indicators from the federal government and its own survey of hospitals. Analysts look at rates of preventable errors and infections; how well hospitals follow procedures, such as handwashing, known to improve patient outcomes; and whether they have adequate staffing; among other factors. The data capture hospital safety measures from 2020 through March 2023.

Critics have questioned the value of such ratings, because hospitals sometimes receive conflicting ratings , and some argue that ratings organization don’t adequately account for some hospitals caring for a greater portion of patients who have complex medical problems and may be at greater risk for complications.

Overall, 41% of hospitals in the Philadelphia region earned an A in the grades that Leapfrog releases twice a year . Here are the latest local highlights:

Twenty hospitals received an A rating. Seven of them have gotten straight As for the past four years: Bryn Mawr Hospital, Paoli Hospital, and Riddle Hospital (all three owned by Main Line Health); Doylestown Hospital; Holy Redeemer Hospital; and Jefferson Washington Township Hospital in New Jersey.

Four hospitals were downgraded from an A to a C rating since last spring’s ratings: Cooper University Hospital in New Jersey; Jefferson Frankford and Jefferson Torresdale (both owned by Jefferson Health); and Pennsylvania Hospital.

Roxborough Memorial Hospital had the greatest improvement. Leapfrog gave the Philadelphia community hospital an A rating, up from a C this time last year.

Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital both received a D, the lowest rating among hospitals in the region. The two Delaware County hospitals, owned by Crozer Health, have received Ds or Cs from Leapfrog for the past four years.

Lehigh Valley leads the nation

New this spring, Leapfrog rated metro areas for their overall hospital safety and ranked the top 25 regions with the greatest portion of A-rated hospitals.

The Lehigh Valley region took top honors with nearly 73% of hospitals in the region that includes Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and parts of New Jersey receiving an A grade.

The Harrisburg-Carlisle metro area tied for 13th, with 53% of hospitals receiving an A.

Philadelphia, with 41% of hospitals receiving an A rating, didn’t make Leapfrog’s list of top 25 metropolitan areas for hospital safety.

Tesla Autopilot investigation closed after feds find 13 fatal crashes related to misuse

safari 2023 safety rating

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration closed a long-standing investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance system after reviewing hundreds of crashes involving its misuse, including 13 that were fatal and “many more involving serious injuries.”

At the same time, NHTSA is opening a new investigation to evaluate whether the Autopilot recall fix that Tesla implemented in December is effective enough.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation said in documents released Friday that it completed “an extensive body of work” which turned up evidence that “Tesla’s weak driver engagement system was not appropriate for Autopilot’s permissive operating capabilities.”

“This mismatch resulted in a critical safety gap between drivers’ expectations of [Autopilot’s] operating capabilities and the system’s true capabilities,” the agency wrote. “This gap led to foreseeable misuse and avoidable crashes.”

The closing of the initial probe, which began in 2021, marks an end of one of the most visible efforts by the government to scrutinize Tesla’s Autopilot software. Tesla is still feeling the pressure of multiple other inquiries, though.

The Department of Justice is also investigating the company’s claims about the technology, and the California Department of Motor Vehicles has  accused Tesla of falsely advertising the capabilities of Autopilot and the more-advanced Full Self-Driving beta software. The company is also facing multiple lawsuits regarding Autopilot. Tesla, meanwhile, is now going “balls to the wall for autonomy,” according to CEO Elon Musk.

NHTSA said its investigation reviewed 956 reported crashes up until August 30, 2023. In roughly half (489) of those, the agency said either there “was insufficient data to make an assessment,” the other vehicle was at fault, Autopilot was found to not be in use or the crash was otherwise unrelated to the probe.

NHTSA said the remaining 467 crashes fell into three buckets. There were many (211) crashes where “the frontal plane of the Tesla struck another vehicle or obstacle with adequate time for an attentive driver to respond to avoid or mitigate the crash. It said 145 crashes involved “roadway departures in low traction conditions such as wet roadways. And it said 111 of the crashes involved “roadway departures where Autosteer was inadvertently disengaged by the driver’s inputs.”

These crashes “are often severe because neither the system nor the driver reacts appropriately, resulting in high-speed differential and high energy crash outcomes,” the agency wrote.

Tesla tells drivers they need to pay attention to the road and keep their hands on the wheel while using Autopilot, which it measures via a torque sensor and, in its newer cars, the in-cabin camera. But NHTSA, and other safety groups, have said that these warnings and checks do not go far enough. In December, NHTSA said these measures were “insufficient to prevent misuse.”

Tesla agreed to issue a recall via a software update that would theoretically increase driver monitoring. But that update did not really appear to change Autopilot much — a sentiment NHTSA seems to agree with.

Parts of that recall fix require the “owner to opt in,” and Tesla allows a driver to “readily reverse” some of the safeguards, according to NHTSA.

NHTSA spent nearly three years working on the investigation into Autopilot, and met or interacted with Tesla numerous times throughout the process. It performed many direct examinations of the crashes, and relied on the company to provide data about them as well.

But the agency criticized Tesla’s data in one of the supporting documents.

“Gaps in Tesla’s telematic data create uncertainty regarding the actual rate at which vehicles operating with Autopilot engaged are involved in crashes. Tesla is not aware of every crash involving Autopilot even for severe crashes because of gaps in telematic reporting,” NHTSA wrote. According to the agency, Tesla “largely receives data from crashes only with pyrotechnic deployment,” meaning when air bags, seat belt pre-tensioners or the pedestrian impact mitigation feature of the car’s hood are triggered.

NHTSA claims that limiting to this level means Tesla is only collecting data on around 18% of crashes that are reported to the police. As a result, NHTSA wrote that the probe uncovered crashes for which Autopilot was engaged that Tesla was not notified of via telematics.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
