Cykelløbet Tour of Scandinavia slutter i Haderslev

scandinavia tour cykel

Tour of Scandinavia består af i alt seks etaper.

Tour of Scandinavia – Battle of the North

Two final stages of Tour of Scandinavia in Denmark

Tour of Scandinavia (formerly Ladies Tour of Norway) was scaled up to a six-day stage race before last year and expanded with stages in both Denmark and Sweden in addition to Norway. The “grand depart” of the 2022 edition was at Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen with fantastic surroundings and ended with a folk festival in the “home town” Halden. The cross-border cooperation will continue in 2023, and we are very happy to be able to present this year’s race starting in Norway and ending in Denmark.

You will find descriptions of each stage in the menu.

Bike touring in Scandinavia: Maps and All Routes

profile picture of the author

The best thing about planning a bike ride is the moment when you discover a new route and imagine yourself pedaling all those kilometers through the countryside, breathing the fresh air and experiencing it yourself, right? This is exactly what we did when we researched all long-distance cycling routes in Norway, Sweden and Finland . So exciting that we wanted to start our bike tour right away! In this article you will find all routes in Scandinavia, key facts and GPX files to download. Now all you have to do is choose your cycling holiday.

Cycling in Scandinavia

Scandinavia, that is Norway, Sweden and Finland. They have a lot in common, but there are things they don't.

White Nights and Northern Lights

A phenomenon which is common to all 3 countries is the summer of white nights. Depending on how far north you go, you can cycle almost until midnight . Already in September, on the other hand, days get shorter and you can see the Northern Lights . Tip: The area around 70 degree north is best for spotting northern lights, the Lofoten on the Coastal Route in Norway, or Rovaniemi on the EuroVelo 11 through Finland, for example. But you can also be lucky elsewhere to see the green glow in the sky.

Mosquitoes at the Lake

Another common phenomenon Scandinavia is famous for are mosquitoes. The beasts have high season from June. They disappear with the first frost, sometime in September. While cycling, they don't bother you. But as soon as you settle down comfortably on the shore of one of the countless idyllic lakes, you should be prepared: a mosquito net for your head and mosquito-proof clothing. Fortunately, the evening hours are so cool that you would wear the clothes anyway. The spectacular views and vast, lonely landscapes will make up for the effort. Don't let a few mosquitoes spoil your cycling holiday.

Rain on Cycling Vacation

We're not sugarcoating it: Vacation in Scandinavia without rain is extremely unlikely. Cycling in the sunshine is great, but with the right rain gear and a suitable tent, you can keep up the holiday spirit even when the weather is bad for a couple of days. That's how it's done: Accept the rain. Especially in Sweden and Finland, the landscape looks beautiful even in the rain, or then the most! The raindrops sparkle on moss and lichen and the green of the forests almost leaps at you.

Rain gear: There is no such thing as 100% waterproof rainwear. It just delays getting wet. At some point the water runs into the collar, into the sleeves, from the jacket into the trousers, from the trousers into the shoes. You could ride until you feel your clothes under the raingear get wet and then shelter or set up your tent. If you get completely wet, you should keep going until you come to a place where you can dry yourself.

Rainwear only makes sense when it's cold enough. Otherwise, you sweat under your clothes as if you had cycled without them. In Scandinavia it is cold when it rains. Especially in Norway where the rain goes with wind. Sturdy, really waterproof rain gear is worth it here. That your raingear is light and breathable is secondary if you want to keep up your holiday spirit.

Your tent should be suitable for rain. Practical is an anteroom, where you can cook and sit out the rain for a few hours. Tunnel tents usually offer large anterooms. They also have the advantage that you can dismantle the inner tent individually . That way it stays dry. So the next time you set it up, you put your mat in a dry inner tent. Sounds good, right?

Let's get to the differences. The mountains are very unevenly distributed in Scandinavia. The Scandinavian Mountains run all the way through Norway. The whole country is one big mountain range. In addition, the coast is rugged by countless fjords. In Norway you will make a lot of climbs and many kilometers in east-west direction to advance far less kilometers north to south. You will be compensated with the most breathtaking views in the world (my opinion).

Avoid detours by carefully planning your cycle route through Norway. At weonbikes.com you can download GPX files for all routes for your planning. If you want to be sure your route is feasible, Matthew from Cycle Norway will help you personally with route planning in Norway.

In contrast to Norway, in Sweden and Finland you can just start cycling with a rough idea of your direction. In western Sweden there are still mountainous areas. Eastern Sweden and Finland are completely flat. Ideal for cycling with luggage.

Speaking of detours. There are thousands of tunnels in Norway. Many of these tunnels are closed to cyclists. You should get information about it in advance. This is, because there is not always an alternative, which brings us back to detours. In Norway you should plan your route well in advance. Check out our Norway article with interactive map and this website with tunnels in Norway for cyclists .

Cycle Routes in Norway

In this overview you will find Norway's 10 national cycle routes as well as the 13 highlights that you shouldn't miss if you cycle along one of these long-distance cycle routes. EuroVelo 1 and EuroVelo 12 run through Norway. They coincide with the Coastal Cycling Route. In addition, there is EuroVelo 3 to Trondheim. It coincides with the Norwegian pilgrimage route. The national long-distance cycle routes are called Nasjonal Sykkelroute and are abbreviated to NSR

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 route

Everything you need to know about all five routes across Norway and Denmark

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map

The 2023 Tour of Scandinavia route was reduced to five stages this year, but despite the loss of one stage, the peloton will compete across 574km from Mysen, Norway, to Haderslev, Denmark.

The route will include the mountaintop finish to Norefjell Ski & Spa on stage 2 and a brand-new time trial in Herning on stage 5.

Join Cyclingnews' coverage of the 2023 Tour of Scandinavia with race reports, results, photo galleries, news and race analysis.

Stage 1: Mysen to Halden, 124.6km

Stage 2: vikersund to norefjell, 150.5km, stage 3: kongsberg to larvik, 139.9km, stage 4: herning to herning, 16.5km, stage 5: middelfart to haderslev, 143.9km.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

This year's race begins with a flat-ish 124.6km stage from Mysen to Halden. It includes one intermediate sprint at the start of the race in Askim, two categorised climbs at Momarken and then upon entering the final circuit at Friedriksten Fortress. The peloton then races two laps of a local circuit before the finish in Halden.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

The second day of racing offers the longest day of the event along hilly terrain with a hilltop finish. The 150.5km stage begins in Vikersund with two intermediate sprints at Vikersund and Noresund. The peloton then races toward the final ascent, which includes the day's main QOM, followed by the last climb to Norefjell Ski & Spa.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

Stage 3 looks like one of the most challenging routes, with a 130.9km race from Kongsberg to Larvik. It is consistently up and down, with two categorised ascents at Vindfjell and Eidanger, with an intermediate sprint in between. The race then ends with a short but sharp climb in the last 1.4km into Larvik.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

The peloton will transfer to Denmark for the final two stages beginning with the stage 4 time trial in Herning. It is the first time the event has offered a time trial. The 16.4km route is expected to favour the strongest time trial riders, but there is a technical part in the center of Herning that will give the riders some extra challenges.

Tour of Scandinavia 2023 Map and Profiles

The Tour of Scandinavia will conclude with a 143.9km race from Middelfart to Haderslev. The route will include two final ascents at Birkemose golf club and Hejlsminde. There are also two final intermediate sprints at Kolding and Christiansfeld. The peloton will then race onto the finishing circuits in for three final laps around Haderslev.

Colleen was a very knowledgeable and accommodating guide, as were the specialist guides that joined us at each city. I would have liked more stopping and immersion at the places that we drove by. and really would have liked to have had more time in Oslo. Though I wasn't particularly looking forward to the cruise from Stockholm to Helsinki, it ended up being quite enjoyable. The hotels were all conveniently located, though the Imperial in Copenhagen is in need of redecorating. This was the first tour that I have taken other than those that I took with students when I was teaching. If I go on a tour again, I think that I would rather be in a smaller group.

10 Days Complete Iceland | Ring-Road, Snæfellsnes Peninsula & Roundtrip airport transfer (Group Tour)

Marina travel was amazing with responses to questions. They helped me get the perfect trip doing exactly what I wanted to do in Iceland. They made easy to book and make changes. Only issue was that the hotel I booked in for first and last night was not a very good hotel as it was cold, small and barely room to bring my luggage and myself. I also could not do anything my first day as I was stuck with my luggage until later afternoon when I finally was able to get into my hotel. I felt I could have had a full extra day to do things suggested if I did not have to keep my luggage with me all day. I sat in a hotel lobby for over 5 hours waiting to get booked into my room. Next time I would just book the 8 day tour and find my own accommodations in Iceland for first and last night there. My tour guide, Hinrik was amazing! He was very informative, helpful, supportive, funny, friendly, open and very easy to talk too. Hinrik really made the group feel like a family and we all were able to connect with each other even though we were all very different people. The encouragement from the guide and the group was amazing to do all the activities! It was my first solo trip and this group made it more then I could have imaged. I honestly do not think the 8 day tour around the island could have been more perfect. I learned so much about Iceland, saw everything I wanted too and so much more. And now I have some amazing new friends that I cannot wait to go visit, as we still connect even now that we have returned to our own countries.
