First World War Gallery

Step into the lives of soldiers, civilians, and families during the Great War in the First World War Gallery. Witness the impact of Lord Kitchener’s recruitment campaign, which saw more than half a million men signing up in the initial weeks. The gallery also features a letter from a nine-year-old boy from Dublin to Lord Kitchener, offering his services as a ‘dispatch ridder’ and demonstrating the reach of the war on children’s imagination. The War Office’s response to the boy’s letter serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting future generations.

Discover the significance of the Spitfire aircraft, flown by pilots during the Battle of Britain in 1940, and its place in the museum’s collection. The Family in Wartime Exhibition offers insight into the tribulations families faced during the war, including the challenges of rationing, with families surviving on restricted amounts of food like 4oz of bacon per week.

Holocaust Exhibition

The Holocaust Exhibition at the Imperial War Museum London provides an in-depth study of the Holocaust, preserving, displaying, and interpreting stories of this devastating conflict. School visits to the Imperial War Museum enhanced with two new learning centres

2022-08-02T09:14:00+01:00

Learning spaces at the Imperial War Museum (IWM) are now open to complement the Second World War Galleries and The Holocaust Galleries, making the London attraction the first museum in the world to house both displays under the same roof.

Schools can study World War Two like never before in a dedicated learning space at the museum.

Both IWM’s learning centres (Taube Family Holocaust Learning Centre and the Clore Learning Centre) offer a multi-functional space within the museum that are exclusively for schools.

Spanning two floors, The Second World War Galleries and The Holocaust Galleries bring together the stories of real people from diverse communities to examine the complex relationship between the Holocaust and the course and consequences of the conflict.

In the Taube Family Holocaust Learning Centre, IWM’s new Holocaust Learning Programme supports secondary students in asking questions about one of the most difficult subjects in human history.

This programme uses new technology to guide secondary students through The Holocaust Galleries, critically considering why the Holocaust happened, why we still study it and what it means in our world today.

“I believe that this learning programme is not just about visiting the exhibition. It’s aiming higher and it should become a part of students’ Holocaust education in the UK.” Key Stage 3 teacher

Produced in consultation with secondary schools from across the UK, students will be given space to examine these questions by looking at personal stories and objects.

Through self-guided and directed study, students are given additional context for the stories they encounter, and the Taube Family Holocaust Learning Centre is said to offer a safe and supportive learning environment that enables conversation about this challenging subject and its legacy today.

Learning inside the Clore Learning Centre

In the Clore Learning Centre, the second of the new centres, IWM’s Documentary Challenge session offers both primary and secondary schools a digitally led experience.

Students develop historical inquiry skills to question, consider, debate, and evaluate primary sources, while also gaining a deeper understanding about the impact of war and conflict on people’s lives in the past, and its relevance in society today.

Which stories are too important to be kept inside the museum? What deserves more attention from the wider world? Who is telling the story and why? Students are given smart-cameras and tasked with making mini documentaries about the people and objects they feel the world needs to know about.

IWM’s We Were There: Ask Questions about Conflict session offers a unique chance for both primary and secondary schools to meet veterans and eyewitnesses from World War Two up to today.

In the new Clore Learning Centre students are given the opportunity to hear their personal stories, ask questions and connect through conversations.

Imperial War Museum

Pupils can become documentary makers as part of one of the workshops on offer.

This session encourages active exploration of the consequences of war, and helps students understand the impact of war and conflict on people’s lives, and the variety of these experiences.

Through personal stories, question-based learning and conversation, students have a chance to get to know the people who were there, living through conflict.

The state-of-the-art learning centres are supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund, Clore Duffield Foundation and Taube Philanthropies as part of a six-year long transformation project.

Planning your Visit

How do i arrange a visit.

Provide your preferred date and time in our online form.

School groups planning to visit the Museum and Memorial must have a confirmed appointment. Confirmation from a Museum and Memorial Education staff member, not the submission of a reservation form, guarantees a tour time.

Museum and Memorial school visits book quickly; be sure to schedule early for your first choice of time and date.

Is it possible to have a guided visit?

The Museum and Memorial will make an effort to accommodate requests for guided visits, but because the Museum and Memorial relies on volunteers, it is not always possible. Teachers are encouraged to be prepared to lead students through the Museum and Memorial. Guided visits are available Tuesdays-Fridays.

If a volunteer facilitator is available, what can I expect?

Volunteers provide their time and expertise to help facilitate a visit that meets your group’s needs. The more information you have on the day of your visit, the better.

  • What time do you need to leave?
  • Would you prefer the Museum and Memorial provide more time for independent exploration or more facilitator highlights?
  • Where are your students in the course of their study? Must they complete an assignment by the end of their visit?

What about a self-guided tour? Do I still need a reservation if I will lead a school group myself?

Yes. We welcome school groups doing self-guided tours of the Museum and Memorial, but in order to receive the student group discount rate, at least one week prior notification of the visit is needed. Fill out our online form or contact us at [email protected] .

All guests should follow Museum and Memorial procedures and all groups should be mindful of other guests and tours. If a group has more than 30 members, you should divide into separate groups starting in various locations in order to prevent congestion in any one section of the Museum and Memorial.

How much time should I allow for our visit?

The typical school visit last two hours. This time frame requires an efficient pace in order to see all areas of the Museum and Memorial. If you would like a longer visit, please ask.

What are the maximum and minimum numbers of students for a group visit?

The Museum and Memorial can accommodate groups up to approximately 200 students at one time. Inquire with us about accommodations for larger groups. We ask that any student group contain at least seven members in order to qualify for the student group discount. Though we would like to provide facilitators for all guests, please understand the priority will go to the larger groups.

Is the Museum equipped for special needs students?

Yes, all galleries of the National WWI Museum and Memorial are accessible to people with mobility limitations. Please note the Liberty Memorial Tower, a historic landmark, is not wheelchair accessible. Special activities and guides are available for visually and hearing impaired guests with advance notice. If your school group has guests with special needs, please let us know ahead of time.

Lunch at the Museum and Memorial

Can our group eat lunch at the museum and memorial.

Sack lunches are available from the Museum-operated Over There Café for student groups at $7 each and usually include a sandwich, chips, a cookie, and a bottle of water. Due to limited seating, sack lunches cannot be eaten in the Café. Lunches must be eaten either outside on the grounds or on your school bus.

Group orders must be placed at least seven business days prior your visit. As Museum and Memorial ticketing and the Over There Café are separate, payment for café lunches will be paid for separately. Students should not individually purchase food or drinks from the Café. Students are not permitted to visit the Café without an adult chaperone.

Grant Assistance information

Pre-Visit Information

Do you have any items that can be borrowed for pre-visit learning.

Special trunks of WWI era artifacts may be borrowed from the Museum and Memorial for six-week periods of time. A $150 refundable deposit is required. Contact the Education Department for more information.

Do you have other educational resources I can use with my students?

Yes! Check out our Classroom Materials page to learn more about our educational resources, including primary sources, information, articles and lesson plans.

Our visit is booked and we have paid ahead. Can we obtain wristbands prior to our visit?

Yes. Once we receive payment for your group, you may request to receive wristbands in advance. Please send your request and mailing address to the Museum and Memorial at least two weeks prior to your visit. Having wristbands on prior to arrival will allow more time for your visit.

In the case of large school groups, we will need to break students into smaller groups. You will receive a variety of colored bands. Students should be placed into color-coded groups prior to arrival, and each group should be assigned an appropriate number of teachers and adult chaperones.

Day of the Visit

Where should our bus unload and load where should buses park.

Buses should unload and load students/chaperones at the north end of the U-shaped drive on the Memorial Mall and may park along the south end of the Mall or on Kessler Road. Please do not block the north entrance; other guests are unable to pass buses.

Click here for a bus parking map:

Aerial view of the Liberty Memorial with labels showing where buses can park.

What do we do when we arrive?

Please plan to arrive as close to your tour time as possible. Guide availability is contingent upon a daily assigned schedule and it is not always possible to accommodate early or late groups.

Upon arrival, students will be directed to congregate with a Museum Facilitator in an area appropriate for their numbers. Only the group leader should go to the Ticketing Counter with the accurate number of students and adults in the group.

If paying upon arrival, wristbands will be received at that time. If pre-paid, the group leader will need to give the attendant the confirmation ticket and all unused wristbands. If necessary, a refund check will be issued and mailed to your school.

What if there is inclement weather on the day of our scheduled visit?

In many cases of inclement weather, there is a possibility the Tower may close. Far less frequently, the Museum and Memorial itself may close or have a late opening. If there is concern of winter weather closing, please check our website or call 816.888.8100. If your district cancels due to inclement weather, please contact us at [email protected] .

  • Please silence all phones before entering the Museum and Memorial. Students should use smartphones only for notes or as a camera. Gaming, etc. is not allowed.
  • Photography is generally allowed in all areas of the Museum and Memorial except for the films or where otherwise noted. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed.
  • Written assignments or jotting notes are welcome in the Museum and Memorial. However the walls, glass cases, or exhibit boards may not be used as hard surfaces upon which to write.
  • Please use pencils only in the Museum and Memorial, no pens.
  • Wristbands must be worn on student wrists at all times while at the Museum and Memorial, as it serves as both tickets into the Museum and Memorial and as group identifiers. This assists our volunteers, staff and security officers.

Food and belongings

  • No food, drink or large backpacks are allowed into the Museum and Memorial. An area may be made available for bags, but it is preferable they are left on the bus, at school or at home.

  • Chaperones within the required ratio are admitted FREE of charge to manage student behavior and engage in the learning process. (Additional chaperones will be charged a discounted admission fee.) If students are unable to abide by Museum and Memorial rules, a chaperone will be asked to stay with them in a separate area of the Museum and Memorial while the rest of the group completes their tour.
  • It is very important that chaperones remain with students at all times, including visits to the restroom, the Over There Café, the Museum Store and the Liberty Memorial Tower. If your visit includes the Tower, an adult chaperone must be present with any students, whether they are waiting at the base of the Tower, on the elevator or at the observation area at the top of the Tower. No students should be left unaccompanied in any area of the National WWI Museum and Memorial.
  • Only 10 students are permitted in the Museum Store at one time.

The Museum and Memorial is able to offer grant-funded field trips to area schools thanks to the generous donations of the Estelle S. and Robert A. Follow the digital trail and discover what animals, aircraft and the RAF have in common.

Sound trail

Our sound trail can be accessed using a mobile phone or tablet. Listen to the sounds and try to locate the objects around the hangars.

Very educational and informative. Lots of information regarding the recovery and conservation efforts.

We need you to help save the  hunley .

The  Hunley  became the world’s first successful combat submarine in 1864 and then mysteriously vanished.  She was located in 1995 by  New York Times  best selling author Clive Cussler and was raised from the ocean floor in 2000.  The  Hunley  was not only an important relic in Naval history but was also a time capsule holding a wide array of fascinating artifacts from the 19 th  century.  We are working to save the  Hunley , the artifacts found within and build a submarine naval museum where our nation’s story under the waves can be told for generations to come.

Standard Membership packages include: Annual subscription to The Blue Light Magazine , Discounted Tour Tickets, 10% Off Merchandise, Entrance to Annual Behind-the-Scenes Members-Only Tours, 1 Car Decal, and 1 Member Hat.

Will You Help Save the Hunley?

In 1995 Clive Cussler located the legendary submarine just off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. In 2000, the Hunley was successfully raised and in 2001 an international team of scientists began the process of carefully excavating her contents at a high-tech laboratory facility in North Charleston. To complete this historic journey, we must depend on donations from those who care about history. Will you help?

Want to memorialize someone? If you wish for your donation to serve as a renewal of an existing membership or as a memorial, please send an email to [email protected]  letting us know how you’d like to apply your donation.
