Is Barcelona a good biking city?

You bet it is! Barcelona is an absolute gem for cyclists, thanks to its flat terrain, pleasant climate, and an impressive network of bike paths that spans over 200 kilometers. Whether you’re a novice biker or a seasoned cyclist, you’ll find the city inviting with its biking-friendly streets and scenic routes.

Barcelona has invested significantly in making itself a cyclist-friendly city, and the number of people cycling daily is testimony to that. To top it off, you’ll find many places in Barcelona offering bike rentals , making it even easier for tourists to join the cycling fun.

Is it easy to bike around Barcelona?

Biking around Barcelona is incredibly easy! The city’s layout is quite straightforward, and the cycling lanes are clearly marked, ensuring a seamless ride even for first-time visitors. Moreover, Barcelona is reasonably flat, with only a few hilly areas, making it accessible for all fitness levels.

Barcelona also has a public bike-sharing program known as Bicing, which is perfect for short trips around the city. However, do note that this service is mainly designed for residents, and tourists might need to rely on traditional bike rentals.

Is it safe to cycle in Barcelona?

It’s very safe to cycle in Barcelona! The city takes the safety of cyclists seriously, with separated bike lanes and traffic-calming measures in place throughout the city. Plus, the local culture is respectful towards cyclists, which adds another layer of security.

Of course, just like anywhere else, it’s important to follow road safety rules, use hand signals, wear a helmet, and stay alert. This includes for pedestrians, who aren’t always perfect at checking for bikes before crossing bike paths

Remember as well that bike theft can be an issue in Barcelona, so always lock up your bike securely when you’re not using it.

Where can I bike ride in Barcelona?

There’s no shortage of fantastic places to bike ride in Barcelona! From the charming old streets of the Gothic Quarter to the sunny beachside paths of Barceloneta, the options are plentiful. The Parc de la Ciutadella is a great starting point for any bike tour, with beautiful scenery and plenty of paths.

For a more extended ride, you can cycle up Montjuïc Hill for a breathtaking view of the city. If you want a break from urban life, consider taking a bike ride to Collserola Natural Park, a lush green oasis just outside the city.

No matter what your preference, there’s a bike path in Barcelona that’s perfect for you!

Can tourists rent bikes in Barcelona?

Yes, tourists can definitely rent bikes in Barcelona, and it’s a popular way to explore the city! There are numerous bike rental shops scattered throughout the city, offering a wide variety of options from traditional bikes to electric bikes.

You can usually rent a bike for a few hours, a whole day, or even several days depending on your needs. In addition to standalone bike rental shops, tour operators will provide bikes as part of guided or self-guided bike tours.

It’s a flexible, eco-friendly, and fun way to discover Barcelona at your own pace!

Do you have to wear a helmet on a bike in Barcelona?

Legally speaking, helmets are only mandatory for cyclists under 16 years old in urban areas, but they are highly recommended for all riders regardless of age. When you’re biking outside of urban areas and on interurban roads, the law requires that all cyclists wear a helmet.

Despite the legal aspect, wearing a helmet is always a smart choice as it provides essential protection and can prevent serious injuries in case of an accident. Most bike rental shops in Barcelona will provide you with a helmet when you rent a bike.

Can you bike on La Rambla?

Technically, yes, you can bike on La Rambla, but it’s not recommended due to the heavy pedestrian traffic. La Rambla is one of the busiest pedestrian areas in Barcelona, and navigating it on a bike can be challenging and stressful.

If you must pass through La Rambla, it’s better to walk your bike through the crowd to avoid accidents.

There are many other biking-friendly routes nearby that are safer and more enjoyable, such as the beautiful seafront promenade in Barceloneta or the wide avenues of Eixample.

Can you cycle on the pavement in Barcelona?

In Barcelona, cycling on the pavement is generally not allowed unless the pavement is wider than five meters and the pedestrian flow is low. Cyclists are encouraged to use bike lanes and shared spaces instead.

If the pavement is the only option and it meets the above conditions, cyclists should ride at a walking pace and always give priority to pedestrians.

Barcelona has an extensive network of bike lanes and routes designed specifically for cyclists, so you’ll often find it unnecessary and less convenient to cycle on the pavement. Understanding and respecting these rules helps ensure a safe and enjoyable cycling experience for everyone in the city.

So sit back, relax and enjoy our advice and expertise as we now kick-off our top picks starting with a Quick Comparison Breakdown:

So since this is done, let’s dig real deep into those tours:

Gaudi created so many unmissable sights in Barcelona – and on the Gaudi UNESCO Highlights Tour you’ll see ALL of his most famous buildings in a small-group setting.

After visiting La Cascada fountain in Parc de la Ciutadella to learn about the architect’s early life, you’ll continue up, past the Arc de Triomf, to the simply unbelievable La Sagrada Familia. Gaudi’s crowning glory, La Sagrada Familia will be the tallest church in the world when it’s finished (172.5 metres) and each of its façades is packed with amazing imagery and stories – your guide will share some of the best!

Next you will check out one of Gaudi’s early works, the Casa Vicens. Oft-overlooked by other tours, this art nouveau masterpiece draws on Spain’s Arabic influences to create a colourful and playful mansion and one of the signature pieces of Catalan Modernisme.

After stopping on a picturesque plaza for refreshments, you’ll make your way to the epic Passeig de Gracia boulevard, where the grandiose mansions of La Pedrera (a building with no straight lines!) and Casa Batllo (an allegory of Gaudi’s proud Catalan roots), stand tall. Gaudi was at his creative peak at this point of his career.

There’s more to come, as you cycle down Las Ramblas and onto a small side street leading to the hospital where Gaudi died. The hospital’s pleasant courtyard is a serene place to contemplate the architect’s legacy.

Gaudi Bike Tours are unique because their 4-hr duration allows longer to dive into the life and legacy of Barcelona’s most famous scion. Meanwhile, the small-group setting and chance to take a break on a cafe terrace make exploring by bike fun and relaxed.

Traveler´s checklist:

Itinerary: It would be hard to beat this itinerary, especially if this is your first time in Barcelona. Gaudi’s sights are joined by some of the city’s most beautiful streets, so you’ll finish having seen the best of the Catalan capital. 5/5.

Biking In Barcelona 2

Important information to note: Bicing is designed for locals who have either a Spanish identity card or a N.I.E. which is the card received by foreigners living in Cataluña. So if you don’t have either one, this is not an option for you.

On a budget or want the freedom of being your own guide?

Bicing is a great option for you.

In 2007, Barcelona inaugurated Bicing, which is a bicycle sharing system modeled after similar systems in other European cities. Bicing bicycles are easy to spot around the city. There are many stations where they are parked in a line on bike racks.

The bikes are red and white; therefore, they are unmissable! Users can pick up and drop off the bikes at any of the 421 stations throughout the city. The Bicing app allows you to plan your routes, figure out the best place to pick up the bikes depending on where they are available, and mark your favorite stations.

You can design your own bike tour for you and your friends, giving you more freedom and independence to explore. Click here for some great example routes. When you´re done, simply drop the bike off at one of the stations and be on your way.

Itinerary: You are completely independent with this option, this is great for flexibility, although you are bound to the bike stations and especially in summer full stations in the city centre and on the beach can create some hassle. 3/5.

Family Friendly: Bicing is not a family-friendly option, as all of their bikes are the same size and there are no child seats. 1/5.

Wow-factor: It depends on what you make of it. A good choice if you know the city well, if you are new to Barcelona, finding your way around the city will be a bit of a challenge. 2/5.

Duration: You can ride for up to two hours straight on a bike, after that you have to check your bike out, but you can check right back in!

Price and tour options: The cost is 47€ per year

How it compares in our list: This is your tour in whatever way you choose. It is the ultimate freedom, as you can hop on the bike and explore the city on your own terms. Unlike the other tours in this article, you will not get the knowledge and expertise of a guide.

Gaudi by Bike: A Self-Guided Bike Tour in Barcelona

Top at the list of the attractions that you have to see in Barcelona , are the works of the renown Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí.

His most famous work is the enormous, and still under construction, church of La Sagrada Família. But there are also another five properties built by Gaudí that are also UNESCO World Heritage listed and situated close by in Barcelona, in the districts of Eixample and Gràcia.

And the best way to see them all in one day? By bicycle!

Gaudi tour Barcelona

Why I Recommend a Bike Tour

If you’re a serious student of architecture, you’ll probably want to visit inside many of Gaudí’s properties and spend more than a day exploring them.

For other visitors, though, I recommend choosing just two or maybe three properties to visit inside, especially considering the high entry fees charged by each individual property. For the rest of the properties, just view their exteriors.

When I visited Barcelona for the first time, I tried to put together a self-guided route to visit multiple properties. However, they tend to be too far apart to easily walk in between them, and not all are close by metro stops.

Instead, the properties are the perfect distance apart for a self-guided bike tour. Plus the wide, flat streets of the modern Eixample and Gràcia districts are excellent for bike-riding.

What If I Have a Dog?

And if you’re visiting Barcelona with a dog? I recommend walking part of this route with them, or hiring a trailer to use with your bike (see below).

In particular, don’t miss out on visiting Park Guëll with your dogs – dogs are allowed for free in the park on a leash!

Dog at Park Guëll

Hiring a Bike in Barcelona

Barcelona has a share bicycle scheme, Bicing , but usage is restricted to Spanish residents. Instead, head to one of the many bicycle hire shops scattered all over the city.

For this tour, I recommend hiring a bike from  Rent-a-bike , at 25 Carrer del Perill in the Gràcia district. It’s close to many of the Gaudi properties (and was down the road from my accommodation). If you’re not staying close by, the closest metro stop is Diagonal.

Bike hire starts from €15 per day (€40 for e-bikes), with the option to reserve in advance. You can add a trailer to your booking for €15, including special trailers for dogs. Double check their latest opening hours.

Recommended Itinerary & Distances

Start: Rent-a-bike, 25 Carrer del Perill

Stop 1:  Casa Milà, 261-265 Provença (cnr Passeig de Gràcia) (Distance: 700m)

Stop 2:  Casa Battló, 43 Passeig de Gràcia (Distance: 550m)

Stop 3 (optional):  Palau Güell, 3-5 Carrer Nou de la Rambla (Distance: 2.3km)

Stop 4: La Sagrada Família (Distance: 2.2km from Stop 2, 4.5km from Stop 3)

Stop 5:  Park Güell, Carrer d’Olot (Distance: 2.8km)

Stop 6:  Casa Vicens, 20 Carrer de les Carolines (Distance: 1.8km)

Finish:  Rent-a-bike, 29 Carrer del Perill (Distance: 1.7km)

Total Distance:  9.7km without Stop 3, 14.3km with Stop 3

Stop 1: Casa Milà

It’s not far to the first stop on your Gaudí tour of Barcelona, Casa Milà , which is just 700m away. It’s easy to see why this building has been nicknamed La Pedrera, or the “quarry house”. Although sombre in colour, its curvaceous lines are highly typical of Catalan Modernism.

Casa Milà

Stop 2: Casa Battló

It’s just a short 500m further down the wide boulevard of Passeig de Gràcia to  Casa Battló , or the “dragon house”. It’s fun to try and spot the dragon motifs scattered over the building’s exterior. I found it quite difficult!

Casa Battló

Just be warned – the stretch of bike path outside this house is one of the most dangerous in Barcelona, due to the overspill of spectators taking photos!

Stop 3: Palau Güell (optional)

At this point, it’s optional to head a further 2.3km into the historic centre of Barcelona to Palau Güell .

Most of the bike riding will be along the busy La Rambla. However, considering that you’re likely to walk along this stretch on foot at some point during your visit to Barcelona, it’s probably better to detour by this property then. Doing so will save a sizeable 4.6km off the total distance of this bike tour.

Stop 4: La Sagrada Família

You’ll spot La Sagrada Família well before you arrive at it. Its towers and cranes dominate the Barcelona skyline. After being under construction for over 100 years, the most recent planned completion date was 2027, the centenary of Gaudi’s death. However, with the lockdowns of recent years, its completion has again been delayed.

Sagrada Família

While Gaudi designed the entire church and it is undoubtedly his masterpiece, interestingly the only parts that have been UNESCO World Heritage listed are the Nativity Facade and the Crypt. These were the two main parts of the building constructed during Gaudi’s lifetime.

The Nativity Facade in particular was my favourite part of the church. With it’s intricate details it’s possible to spend ages staring up at it.

Sagrada Familia Nativity Facade

Make sure you book in advance if you want to enter inside (and see the facades up close). Included in the entry ticket is a display about Gaudi’s architectural techniques in the downstairs exhibition space.

Sagrada Familia Interior

Stop 5: Park Güell

The most difficult part of your bike ride will be the 2.8km uphill to Park Güell . Luckily then, the park is a wonderful spot at which to chill out, enjoying the views of Barcelona below, while also admiring the elements constructed by Gaudi.

Park Güell

Entry to the monument section is ticketed, and you’ll also likely need to book in advance. Dogs are allowed to join you inside the park for free, although there are some areas where they are not allowed to visit, for conservation reasons.

Stop 6: Casa Vicens

It’s a 1.8km ride back downhill through a maze of smaller streets to Casa Vicens . The first house that Gaudi built, it was mainly obscured by scaffolding during my visit in 2017, but they are now long gone, unveiling this magnificent property. The interior has only recently been open to the public for the first time.

Once your visit is over, it’s just a leisurely 1.7km back to your starting point and to return your bike.

1. The Original Barcelona by Bike tour

As in a time line, from the Roman Barcino to the «Super Manzanas» under construction, The Original  starts from the Gothic Quarter , you pedal through its labyrinthine alleys, its squares, its walls, evade tourists, vendors and workers and criss-cross the heart of the old city until entering the Eixample , the neighborhood designed by the utopian socialist Ildefons Cerdà with its modernist buildings, historic bars, modern restaurants, traditional specialist shops to finally reach the unfinished Sagrada Familia . The topographical and cultural highest point has been reached, and after three further explanations, we head down to the relaxed final stretch along the beach and back to the bustling old town. And there it comes to it’s end: “The Original”.

2. barcelona by bike night tour.

Why so much fame? Why so much press, so many stories, so many secrets, what’s up with Barcelona at night? Barcelona by bike, after years of empirical research, invites you to a Night tour that humbly tries to answer these questions from the bicycle. Like a web link, where each stop opens a window and another one emerges from it, the protagonist of this tour will be you, your inquieties to explore. Barcelona is alive , dynamic, complex, and so are its nights. Pescadito frito in the bar La Plata, a draft in the El Borne quarter, a cool breeze at the Macba, the hot spot of the skaters, we will stop here and there, how one feels like. As they say in Barna, «sobre la marcha» «on the go».

  • Duration:  3 hrs
  • Starting time: 18h00
  • from 6 persons: 40€ p.p.
  • 4-5 persons: 45€ p.p.
  • 3 persons: 55€ p.p.
  • 2 persons: 65€ p.p

Barcelona is never the same. There is always something going on.

3. panoramic barcelona by e-bike tour.

Set off from the Gothic Quarter , we will cycle up on e-bikes the 177 meters that separate the sea line from the top of Montjuic , or «Mount of the Jews», or as the Hispano-Roman Pomponio Mela would say back in the 1st century AD, «Mons Lovi»s, that is, Mount Jupiter that is, Mount of the»Father of Light». The truth is that from the “Monte de la Luz”, Montjuic, you can have a panoramic view of the entire city, the port, the Eixample, the maritime mountain range and understand why so many soldiers over the centuries, used this vantage point to control the city destination. Barcelona by bike invites you to climb that mountain and discover its history, its castle, its botanical gardens, the site of the 1992 Olympic Games and the 1929 Universal Exposition , enjoy its green and its cultural spaces and end the tour enjoying the views with a cold beer in your hands. Why not?

Frequently Asked Questions

Please browse through some of the frequently asked questions about this cycling tour. If you have any further questions, or would like any more information, please contact us and we will answer by email.

Should I do the longer or shorter routes?

This depends entirely on you! The longer and shorter routes all start and finish at the same place, and so you can decide on any given day which you would prefer to do. There is no need to commit until the day of the ride itself. On the longer routes you see more and are able to visit more places, while the shorter routes are more relaxing and ideal if you like to take your time and go at a slower pace. If you would like to visit the extra towns and monuments on the longer routes, but are worried about the distances, then we recommend hiring an e-bike, which will give you more flexibility.

What is the weather like?

The Barcelona region is mostly dry and sunny throughout the year, with little rain. The best temperatures for riding are from late March to June and from September to November. Daytime temperatures during these months are usually between 20°C (68°F) and 25°C (77°F), which is very pleasant for cycling. But it is possible to go on this holiday at other times of the year. In July and August temperatures are regularly above 30°C (85°F), and so we would only recommend doing the tour at this time of year if you have experience of riding in hot conditions. Winter is also a possibility, with daytime temperatures averaging around 15°C (60°F): not exactly t-shirt weather, but also not unpleasant for cycling.

Can I extend the tour?

Yes, we would be happy to arrange any tour extensions for you. The most popular option is to spend extra nights in Barcelona . But we can also help you to extend the trip if you wish to visit Madrid , Valencia , the Costa Brava, or elsewhere.

Do you run this as a guided tour?

Yes, for more details, check out the guided version of this holiday.

Why book with us?

We are a small and independent company who are locally based, which offers several advantages: - We have a lot personal experience of all of our tours, which have been refined over many years. We believe we are genuine experts in the regions where we run tours, and we are also close at hand to offer support and a personalized service. - We are flexible and can tailor our itineraries to suit your requirements. - We have low overheads. • Pros : Cooler weather, fewer crowds.
  • Cons : Occasional rainfall.
  • Pros : Long days with lots of sunshine.
  • Cons : High heat, peak tourist season.

Love, love, love this trip! We did it as a group of old college gal-pals and this was one of the best trips we have done. Highly recommend!

We have done this tour two times! Once as a couple and most recently with our older teenagers. We love this part of Spain, and this is a great way to see it, by pedaling! The kids liked seeing the old villages and different landscapes, and the food & wine do not disappoint. The hotels on the tour are perfectly charming. Great tour, but now we have to decide where to go next year!

We had an excellent tour thru Costa Brava. Our welcome orientation was fantastic – this was the best overview we have ever had as were the instructions and support. We’ve used multiple companies for self guided trips and non could compare to this. The route guidance, hotels and route were superior. We biked this same area with Randonne 4 years ago and they can’t compete. The hotels including recommendations before and after were fantastic. At Sa Punta, the food and gardens were lovely. El Moli and La Placa were especially welcoming.

What to Bring?

Biking Outside Barcelona

With a host of highly-rated tour operators in town, balmy weather and an extensive network of bike paths, exploring Barcelona on two wheels is a LOT of fun ! Here’s everything you need to know to get pedalling…

Why Explore by Bicycle?

A bike tour is a great way to see Barcelona, and has numerous advantages over  traditional walking tours . The most obvious is that being on a bicycle enables you to see much more of the city, but those of you who like a little exercise will also appreciate the chance to burn off a couple more calories and keep the oxygen flowing to the brain as your knowledgeable guide regales you with fascinating histories and amusing anecdotes.

The chance to rattle around Barcelona on two wheels will also make you feel a little more independent (and dare we say ‘cool’) than those who’ve hopped on the nearest tourist bus

The chance to rattle around Barcelona on two wheels will also make you feel a little more independent (and dare we say ‘cool’) than those who’ve hopped on the nearest tourist bus – and you can even maintain the moral high ground on environmental friendliness. There’s no carbon emissions generated from pedal power.

The fact that Barcelona is (with the exception of  the odd mountain ) an incredibly flat city with over 300km of bike paths (and more planned) should provide additional incentive to get in the saddle and discover the town’s best attractions .

8 Advantages of Exploring by Bike

  • Barcelona’s warm & dry weather is perfect for biking
  • It’s not strenuous, but still a good work out
  • You can fit in many more sights than on a walking tour…
  • But you are more independent than on a bus / coach tour!
  • Barcelona has 300km+ of cycling paths and many car-free zones
  • The centre of the city is mostly flat (and the hilly tours you can do on an Electric Bicycle!)
  • It’s an environmentally friendly way of seeing the city
  • Bicycle tours tend to be very affordable !

Most of Barcelona’s numerous bike tour companies offer both private tours and group excursions with a guide. As well as catch-all routes that take in the likes of  La Sagrada Familia ,  Barceloneta Beach  and  La Rambla  in one circuit, you’ll also find some exciting alternative tours on offer, concentrating on different themes (like  eating tapas  or football) or taking you to less-heralded, but equally fascinating, districts.

1. Steel Donkey Bike Tours

Looking for a two-wheel ride you will never forget? The Steel Donkey team (the donkey is the national animal of Catalonia in case you were wondering!) offer intimate adventures around the city of Barcelona, riding in small groups of no more than 8 people. Their friendly guides are all Barna locals, with an eye for the fascinating details and stories that others might miss, and a nose for adventure. You won’t get a history lesson on Gaudi, but you might learn a little bit about Catalan independence and see sides of the city that most tourists simply don’t know about, as you spend a unique afternoon uncovering Barcelona’s secrets. There is no fixed itinerary (each guide shows you their personal Barcelona highlights!), but hidden squares, city beaches, side streets, chocolate and  churros , flea markets and forgotten cemeteries are just a few delights you might experience. A simply great tour for people who don’t like to be tourists. 3. Ocean Bikes Barcelona

If you’re keen to see as much as possible while in Barcelona, electric bicycles will take you that bit further than a pedal bike. That’s the philosophy of Ocean Bikes who have created two sensational itineraries for curious explorers: namely their morning Photo Highlights Tour and their afternoon Barcelona Off The Beaten Track Tour . The former is the perfect introduction to the Catalan capital, as it calls by all the most breathtaking sights of the city, such La Sagrada Familia, the Gaudi mansions, and the famous palm tree-lined Barceloneta beach. On this tour you also cross over Montjuic hill, and see the Olympic Stadium, Calatrava’s Needle, the Joan Miro Foundation and several sensational view points – perfect for a few selfies. The more chilled Off The Beaten Track Tour meanwhile is ideal for a relaxed afternoon of cycling and alternative exploring and can be done on a pedal or electric bicycle. Both tours can be combined with a sailing trip from the bike store’s Port Olimpic base! oceanbikesbarcelona.com

E-BIKE, CABLE CAR & BOAT TOUR

So there you have it… plenty of great options to choose from, and no excuses to not get in the saddle. And while you don’t have to be Sir Bradley Wiggins to take a bike tour (my mum has joined me on a couple of the above!), and many tours support young children, basic cycling competence is required. In other words, if you’ve never ridden a bike before, check out our guide to the best walking tours instead!

For a little more on what to bring, plus a couple of suggestion for cycling tours that take you out of the city, keep reading…

What Should I Bring?

Nothing too bad will happen if you rock up to a bicycle tour with just the shirt on your back (and some shorts hopefully), but this is what a boy scout would bring, in order to be totally prepared for a few hours in the saddle:

  • Sunscreen. Be sure to apply plenty to the back of neck, forearms and face.
  • Sunglasses. The light in Barcelona can be oh so bright… you’ll get a headache if you forget these.
  • Sensible footwear. Flip flops on bikes are rarely a good idea.
  • Bottle of water. You’re going to need to rehydrate, possibly quite regularly if it’s scorchio outside.
  • Second layer. Check the weather forecast before you set off, as you might appreciate having a light rain jacket, or sweater, for those times when the legendary local climate lets us down.
  • Camera. Probably best not to pack your DSLR… too clunky and not great way to carry it on a bike. But you’ll want to have a camera of some sort handy for when you stop outside one of Gaudi’s masterpieces, a cool piece of street art or are cruising back to the city via the beach. Your phone or a point of shoot should prove perfect.
  • Address of the tour meeting point. Because there’s always one who doesn’t…
  • Cash. Some pocket change for snacks and souvenirs (some tours stop via cool stores) might come in handy.
  • Backpack. I’d recommend a double shoulder strapped bag as these are much more stable when you’re riding a bike.
  • Lip balm. The Barcelona Life team have very sensitive lips, ok!?

Cycling Outside The City

If you’re a serious cyclist craving some hardcore thigh burn, then check out our  guide to cycling and mountain biking in Catalonia . There’s some amazing countryside to be discovered, whether you’re interested in a day trip or a longer lycra-clad excursion.

For people with normal-sized thighs and fitness levels, there are still a couple of really fun and accessible bike rides that get you out of the city. As a bonus, they all seem to involve wine!

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ll wrap up this post with the answers to your FAQs… and if there’s something we haven’t covered in this article, please ask us in the comments section and we’ll do our best to help!

Is Barcelona good for biking?

Barcelona is the perfect city for cycling, as the weather is warm and dry most of the time, the centre of the city is totally flat, and there are over 300 kms of dedicated bike paths.

Which are the best bike tour companies operating in Barcelona?

Steel Donkey Bike Tours are perhaps the best local Barcelona tour operator, while international companies like Baja Bikes and Fat Tires also have a strong presence in the city. Lovers of architecture might look at Gaudi Bike Tours.

Does Barcelona have a public bike sharing system?

Yes, Barcelona launched a city bike share scheme called Bicing in 2007. As of 2022, there are over 500 Bicing stations. Unfortunately it is NOT available for tourists to use, as you need to be city resident to obtain a Bicing card.

Do I need to wear a helmet when cycling in Barcelona?

By law you are not required to wear a helmet when cycling within the city limits. Naturally, if you don't know the local roads and traffic rules, it can make sense to use one. Most bike rental and tour companies will be able to offer you one for free when you use their services.

More Local Tips!

Confession time! I’ve been blogging about Barcelona since way back in 2009… in other words, apart from quite a few more grey hair since arriving in the city, I’ve got plenty more great advice for you, whether you want to work out which Gaudi buildings to visit , what is the best day trip to go on , or which is the best value Barcelona Card . I am blind and we require a tandem bike to rent. Are there Tandem bikes available to rent?

self guided bike tour barcelona

Hi Teresa, yes it looks like several bike rental firms have them. Just doing a Google now for you and it seems Happy Rental Bike have them for example: https://happyrentalbike.com/barcelona/tandem-bike-rental/

' src=

Could you recommend a route if we wanted to do a free-wheel bike tour of these places? And are there places to lock your bikes if we want to go inside somewhere?

One advantage of a bike tour is the guide usually knows the best bike paths etc. to get around, but it is also fun to go free-wheeling. Specific routes I don’t have saved, but I’d try to get out of the Old Town that is bit too crowded with pedestrians to be comfortable for bikes. Poblenou is nice for cycling, although there are fewer obvious sights to see. Eixample is good if you stick to the bike paths and avoid the traffic.

Just found your site- we arrive soon and will be back on line with you after we land! Love the bike tour recommendations – Boston and Amsterdam were epic on 2 wheels – can’t wait to Bike Barna. And, true confession, as we will be in town for St. Pats- the Irish Bar web search got me to your site. Hasta Luego!

We had a great night riding around Barcelona with Heidi. It’s a great way to see the city and seeing the monuments all lit up was amazing! Stopping off for  tapas and having a glass of Cava while watching the magic fountain light show was incredible! This was our 5th Fat Tire tour in Europe and we have never been disappointed. Thank you so much! Anita Barcelona Night Bike Tour
This was a really great tour! I enjoyed switching things up and getting to see the city at night. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and fun to talk to! As for the  tapas , a-m-a-z-i-n-g – with each stop along the tour they just kept getting better. One of my favorite  tapas  bars of the night was the spot frequented by Anthony Bourdain. I’m so glad we were with a local – we got there early enough to be at the front of the line. The  tapas  were worth the wait. To top it all off, the flamenco show was amazing. The atmosphere was lively and I’d never seen anything like it before. Thank you Fat Tire – can’t wait to visit Barcelona again! Bri L. Barcelona Night Tapas Tour with Flamenco Show
Oriel, our guide, was excellent! Very friendly and well informed about his city – we learnt a lot as well as seeing parts of the city we probably would not have visited. He also gave good recommendations for local dishes to try and restaurants. Fran B. Barcelona Segway Tour
We had Heidi lead our group. She was knowledgeable, fun and interesting. She explained the history well as we toured round with regular stops to sightsee and take photos (hers were amazing) I would thoroughly recommend both the tour and Heidi. Richard G. Barcelona City Bike Tour
Wonderful tour for our whole family. Our guide was very knowledgeable and managed the tour group well to keep us all together. Highly recommend this tour for anyone who is new to Barcelona. Jeffrey R. Barcelona City Bike Tour
We took the Barcelona bike tour and  tapas  walking tours. Both were excellent and I highly recommend them! The flamenca dance was a pleasant addition to the  tapas  tour! Both Stru and Misha were very knowledgeable and friendly! This was a great addition to our visit to Barcelona! Christianne Barcelona Night Tapas Tour with Flamenco Show
Elena did a wonderful job! She was fun, enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable. She taught us a lot about  Gaud i and Barcelona history, and gave great restaurant recommendations! I was nervous about biking in the city, but felt very safe in the bike lanes. It was a fun way to see the city Pam Gaudi Bike Tour with Skip-the-Line Sagrada Familia Ticket

Gravel bike tour from Barcelona to Girona

To ride from Barcelona to Girona through Costa Brava is a unique experience that will allow you to ride trails, dirt roads and back roads with a gravel bike. Start your tour leaving Barcelona through the interior valley, to cross at the end of the day to the coast. Ride along the coast line of the famous Costa Brava sea side to enjoy the best villages. Discover the medieval villages of l’Empordà like Peratallada, Monells, Madremanya and arrive to Gerona passing through the charming village of Pals.

The  Costa Brava , often translated as “wild coast,” is paradise not only for the wild-spirited and wild at heart, but also for those who are simply looking for something a little out of the ordinary. It has something to suit everyone: Along with peaceful villages and a quiet time sunbathing, fun parties.

Discover the  Mediveal village of Peratallada . “Peratallada” means “Carved Stone”, and many of the narrow streets and building foundations in this town are just that, literally carved right into the natural rock. There are also ancient cartwheel ruts cut into the road. The town is beautifully kept, and strolling around its cobbled streets you can admire a whole range of well-preserved buildings whose origins date back to pre-Roman times.

Torroella de Montgri  is a 13th-14th century urban structure, a good example of classical Roman camp type layout. The old part of the town is surrounded by promenades that trace the path of the former defence walls, of which some remain: the 15th-16th century Torre de les Bruixes (Witches’ Tower), evoking legendary witches who once prevented a Catalan king from entering the town, and the 14th century Santa Caterina gate, the only remaining of the six original entrances to Torroella.

Our last stage leads you to  Girona has all the charm of a large city but without the crowds; The old town is one of the most evocative historical centres in Catalonia, with certain elements that are unique in Europe: the Carolingian wall, an exceptionally well conserved Jewish quarter, and the grandeur of the Cathedral’s Gothic nave. Girona also has become in recent years the capital of road and gravel cycling.
