Your Guide to Visiting New York City

Airports & entry, planning tips, restaurants & eating out, nightlife & entertainment, getting around, accommodations.

There are three airports in New York City: John F Kennedy International Airport, La Guardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport.

To get from the JFK Airport to the city, take the AirTrain, which links to the subway, and will take you to Manhattan in one hour by the cost of $2,75. Or use the service of an express bus to Grand Central Terminal or Port Authority, which takes 1,5 hours and costs $18.

You can also take a taxi from the taxi dispatch booths or use services, such as Uber. The flat taxi fare is $52, excluding tolls, tips, and rush hour surcharge.

La Guardia is the closest airport to Manhattan, and still, least accessible by public transport. You can take an express bus #Q70, which will bring you to the 74 th St – Broadway metro station, and will cost you $15. Or take a cab, which will cost approximately $34 – $53, excluding tolls and tips.

From Newark Liberty Airport, take the AirTrain to Newark Airport train station, and then, take any train to New York Penn Station for $13. Taxi fares range from $60 to $80, excluding tolls and tips.

You should promptly consider your plans for the Big Apple, before you pack your luggage. Are you going for a picnic in the Central Park? Are you planning to visit a musical, an opera, or a theatre performance? Are you going to dine in a luxury top-end restaurant on the Fifth?

Consider all your wants and needs for your trip to New York, not only to pack everything you might need, but also to get tickets in advance. Keep in mind, the most popular places and events can be highly overbooked during the high season (summer, vacation time, and during the holiday season).

New York City might have its disadvantages, but you’ll never get hungry in the Big Apple, that’s for sure. Countless cafes, bars, bistros, and restaurants cater for every taste and budget. Italian, Asian, Middle Eastern, Greek, French, Mexican – the variety of cuisines available is outstanding.

From small family cafes to large international restaurant chains, from fast food to luxury “haute couture” cuisine, from street food of all kinds to extravagant restaurants with huge booking lists. To get the best taste of NYC, we would recommend taking a guided NYC food tour .

Whatever plans you have for the Big Apple, you definitely can’t leave without trying these typical New York foods and drinks:

  • Cheesecake New York
  • Long Island Ice Tea

If you are on a budget, don’t miss the markets: Chelsea and Fulton 55, where you can find all kinds of New York street food, as well as numerous budget cafes. To get the best taste of NYC, we would recommend taking a guided NYC food tour .

New bars and clubs open and close in New York City all the time. Every district is filled with night entertainment facilities. If you are in Manhattan, head to Greenwich Village. There are plenty of places, popular with locals, mostly NYU students. Chelsea and Lower East Side are other popular nightlife spots in the heart of the Big Apple. However, if you are staying in Brooklyn, Queens, or Staten Island, don’t worry, you won’t feel the lack of sparkling New York nightlife.

New York City has the name of the world capital of jazz, and it is probably true. The city has expired many world famous jazz musicians in the past, and nowadays, it has countless settings, where you can listen to good jazz music, while enjoying a drink with your friends or a date.

Probably, the most famous jazz club in the world is the Blue Note in Greenwich Village. And the Village Vanguard, which dates back to 1935, is another popular spot in the district for jazz admirers. However, if you can’t afford such top-end places, take a look at Smalls or Fat Cat, situated also in Greenwich Village, just a block from each other, which keep their charges quite reasonable.

Salsa, although originates from Cuba, also draws numerous dance lovers to New York City clubs. If you find yourself into passionate Afro-Caribbean rhythms, head to Copacabana, the best-known Latin dance club dating back to 1940’s, situated right next to Times Square, El Morocco in Spanish Harlem, or Iguana in West Midtown.

As for classical entertainment, Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, along with Broadway theaters are the main venues you should head towards. Opera, ballet, music shows, and concerts of all kinds will suit any cultural taste and budget.

And, of course, most New Yorkers tend to be passionate sports fans. Baseball, basketball, hockey teams – you have a wide list to choose from. Join the locals in one of the games, pick your favorite, and don’t forget to buy souvenirs during a break.

New York City has an extended system of public transportation, which includes subway, buses, commuter rail, and ferries. The terrible stories about New York City subway crimes are mostly in the past. However, you should still be careful, when traveling alone at night: don’t flash your valuables in public, use crowded stations, and try to be around people all the time.

Yellow cabs are as much the symbol of New York City, as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. They are numerous, reasonably priced, and comfortable. To get a cab, all you need to do is stand close to the road and raise your arm. However, if you are in a hurry, it may be wiser to go underground, due to heavy traffic, especially during rush hours.

New York City has some of the most expensive accommodations in the world. Be prepared to pay a minimum of $100 – $200 for a hotel room and, at least, $50 for a bed in a hostel in Manhattan. However, Manhattan is not the only district in New York. You can find much cheaper accommodation in Long Island City, Queens, Brooklyn, or New Jersey. Cheaper fares are also available during January and February, in the end of August, and on Sundays.

Typically, the room fare is claimed without taxes. All New York State and New York City taxes add up to approximately 15%. So, be prepared to pay more on arrival, than the amount on the booking.

New York City generally experiences cold winters, wet springs, hot humid summers, and cool dry autumns. In winter, the temperature can decrease to -18 o C and during the summer, be prepared for the temperature to go up to 38 o C sometimes. Snowstorms are regular during the winter months, but the snow rarely lies longer, than for a couple of days. Also, tropical storms can hit the city during summer time and in September. So, keep that in mind.

Attractions

The Big Apple is never short on attractions to keep tourists busy from sun up to sun down. The Empire State Building is one of the most popular attractions as you are able to see the New York skyline from the observation deck. The Statue of Liberty is not to be missed. If you find yourself in Central Park, there are plenty of food vendors and even free activities to enjoy. If you want to take in a show, be sure to hit Broadway, and if music is your thing, there’s always the Radio City Music Hall.

Highlights of Italy

The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years

TourRadar was excellent. The tours they scheduled were well-run by knowledgeable and amiable guides. Of course, the Italy locations were superb. The office staff kept in constant contact, but unobtrusive. And when I changed plans on the fly, the staff was responsive and thorough. I definitely cannot wait to book my next adventure with TourRadar!

There isn’t enough time in the day to talk about how amazing of a trip we had traveling with Riccardo to Italy! He makes you feel so welcome and like you’re a part of his family when you travel with him. We never had to worry about anything. If we wanted to go to eat (because when in italy it’s all about the food and wine) he gave us the best recommendations. If we wanted history he made it happen. Truly an amazing host and someone that I fully respect and trust. I will continue to travel with him because he’s simply the best at what he does.

The overall experience on this tour was Excellent. It was a well organized tour and I would like to give Omar - the travel agency (Soleto) a five star. Everything is in our satisfaction though there was a small glitch I would say it was a good adventure for my wife and me. Well done Omar!

FAKE - Do not buy tours

There is no star to give (unfortunately one cannot write a review without giving a star) - DO NOT BOOK WITH SIGHTSEEING TOURS. My husband booked a trip to the Vatican on the internet. When arriving at the pick up point (27 March 2023) there was no-one to be found, no signs and when asking around (the various tourist offices at the same street) no one seemed to know anything about this company. We tried (several times) calling the number in an e-mail we had received (and is found on the 'website'). An answering machine said that someone would call back, followed by another voice saying that said the lines were not working. So, approx. 150 Euros lost.

Terrific Tuscany Tour!

My friends and I had a fantastic time on our Vespa Winery tour of the Chianti Hills in beautiful Tuscany. From the minute we met Claudia we found her to be engaging and knowledgeable and Michel was also amazing teaching all the first time Vespa riders how to handle their bikes. We rode through some of the most beautiful countryside and learnt a lot about the Tuscany Chianti Classico traditions. Thanks guys, you helped us make some amazing memories! From Maria (la napoletana), Bruno and their friends from Melbourne, Australia

My Colosseum and Forum was absolutely Amazing. I took this Tour with my wife and it turns out that we were the only one to join the tour. So, it became a private tour sort of speak. I can not help more to thank Valentina (the tour guide) for her dedication and enthusiasm of providing very interesting and detail elaborations of the origin and history of all these roman sites. She is also very welcome to provide you with restaurants and other tips in regards to Rome city.

The guides where very knowledgeable but…

The guides where very knowledgeable but the Vatican museum was too busy. It was hard to enjoy the tour. After a while it feels claustrophobic. Long from a holy place, very touristic. It should be with programmed slots of people in. The Colosseum and Roman Forum was great. But yet, it was built for big human capacity.

Date of experience : April 22, 2019

Ciao Aura, Thank you for your feedback. I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed the tour. I understand that the Vatican can be busy and overwhelming for some people, however I'm sure you appreciate this is the responsibility of the Vatican and not something we have any control over. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Rome.

Fabulous experience

We were so pleased that we had booked this tour! Everything went like clockwork, our tour guide Priscilla was amazing, so knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. She made the trip so interesting and we learned so much. The head phones were invaluable in hearing amongst so many people, even in a small group - there were 6 of us. We would really recommend a guide for the Vatican as it would have been totally overwhelming without one and so much of our day would have been spent queuing. Thank you Priscilla and Sightseeing Tours Italy. Helen and Chris

Iceland - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Reykjavik in Iceland - the starting point of tours and holidays.

A trip to Iceland is a rare treat. The country has only seen an influx of tourism in the last 15 years or so. As airlines create new routes to the capital city of Reykjavik, the country is building new infrastructure to keep up with the crowds of adventurers rushing to take in all the Nordic island has to offer, especially active holidays and outdoor tours, revealing mother nature at her best!

Iceland’s beauty is unrivalled, hosting every natural wonder you could possibly imagine: cascading waterfalls, gushing geysers, impressive glaciers, and volcanic lakes. The country is paradise for any nature lover.

Tour Highlights

  • Explore Iceland’s Golden Circle, taking in the stunning sights of Thingvellir National Park, the Great Geysir, and the Gullfoss waterfall
  • Spend a relaxing afternoon soaking up geothermal energy from the hot springs at the famous Blue Lagoon
  • Check out the black sand-filled shores in Vik
  • Catch the glorious Northern Lights between September and March
  • Take in some live music (and stunning architecture) at the Harpa in Reykjavik
  • Climb the tower of the Hallgrímskirkja cathedral for some of the best views of Iceland’s capital city
  • Step behind the powerful waters of Skógafoss for a unique waterfall view

Travel Tips

  • Want to see absolutely everything Iceland’s 100,000 square kilometers have to offer?  Iceland group tours  allow you to do so within a budget, given the shared transportation costs and group discounts made available by tour operators and businesses in Iceland.
  • Iceland has no trains and few public buses. Renting a car allows you to make spontaneous stops at hot springs or to take selfies with roadside Icelandic horses.
  • The Blue Lagoon is most easily visited on your way to or from the airport using a bus transfer that departs every hour.
  • Pack water-resistant clothing and be prepared to dress in layers. It’s key for handling Iceland’s unpredictable weather and controlling your body’s temperature when climbing waterfalls and glaciers.
  • Get ready to expand your taste pallet. Iceland is known for its skyr, an extremely thick high-protein yogurt, and specialties like smoked puffin, reindeer, and whale meat.
  • Visiting in the summer months? Be prepared for constant daylight. Be sure to pack an eye mask to block out the light when sleeping.

Iceland has seasonal weather, so please check the best time to visit Iceland before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Iceland , do check out our Iceland Travel Guide for more information.

Tours in Iceland - Questions and Answers

Given that summer temperatures do not rise much above 16°C, the best time to visit Iceland is between the months of May and September. Gullfoss Waterfall is also at its most impressive at this time of year, and the midnight sun is visible in the country’s north. Travel outside of the summer season and you may find the country’s museums and hiking routes, such as the Laugavegur Trail , closed. However, the period between November to February does have the bonus of being the season of the Northern Lights , and major attractions such as the Blue Lagoon remain open all year round. Find more information here .

The currency of Iceland is the krona (ISK). It is difficult to exchange your dollars and euros with the Icelandic currencies outside of the country, but easy to do once in the country, both at the airport and in bank branches around the island. USD 1 is equivalent to around ISK 130.

Iceland is one of the most expensive countries in the world to visit, although there are ways to keep costs down, such as by renting a camper van. Overall, visitors should be looking at a daily per-person budget of between USD 100 and USD 200. Most hotels, restaurants, and shops accept credit cards from major providers, and there are no minimum purchase requirements. Since cards are the preferred method of payment, you should be okay even if you avoid carrying cash completely, although having some for emergencies is always a good idea.

Passport holders from around 60 nations, including the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, do not require a visa to enter Iceland as a tourist. Stays are limited to a maximum of 89 days in any six-month period. If you are coming from or going to another Schengen country, this time must also be included in your allowance. Iceland is incredibly safe with very low crime rates. A bigger concern is ensuring that you pack correctly for a climate that can swing from sunny skies to snow showers in a couple of hours. You can find more information here .

It is far more unusual to find an Icelander who does not speak English than one who does. It is taught to a very high standard in schools. Icelandic is one of the most difficult languages in the world to get to grips with. If you fancy giving it a go, start with simple but useful phrases such as vinsamlegast (please) and thakka ther fyrir (thank you).

It may sound unbelievable if you do not know Iceland well, but it is possible to take in the country’s highlights, such as a tour in Reykjavik and exploring the Golden Circle , in just two or three days . Extend your trip to seven days and there is enough time to follow the popular ring road route right around the country and spend a few days trekking in what has to be one of the most visually stunning destinations in Europe. Our guide to how long to spend in Iceland goes into more detail.

Iceland uses the two-pin electric sockets that are seen across much of Europe, known as types C and F. The only difference between these two types is an earthing clip found on one side of type F sockets. The country’s voltage is 230V, so travelers coming from the US or Canada, where it is 130V, may need a voltage converter to run their electrical items safely.

Although Iceland has some excellent museums, trips to the country are all about getting outside and exploring a coastline and a countryside brimming with geysers , volcanic vents, waterfalls, and glaciers. Glacier tours can be taken by road like a standard sightseeing tour, on foot, or even during climbing trips. Hiking is another popular activity, with a good number of routes to choose between. For relaxing, there are plenty of geothermal spas around the country. Seeing the ethereal Northern Lights should also be high on your wish list. Find our Iceland tours and trips here .

If you are sticking to Iceland’s ring road, you could, in theory, rely on the country’s public transport (buses) alone, although their services are much reduced during winter months. Most visitors rent a car instead to avoid being left hanging around. Taxis operate in Reykjavik and other larger urban centers, although most points of interest for travelers are within walking distance of one another. Cheaper hotels come in at around USD 40 per person, per night, but given their standard, this is not over the top. At the high end, do not be surprised if you see room prices of USD 1,000 per night.

Tours Lagunakristal - All You MUST Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

I visited Dollywood's sister theme park in the Ozark mountains. The hidden gem's attractions and food were just as good as Disney's.

  • I visited Dollywood's sister theme park, Silver Dollar City, in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri.
  • I was blown away by its high-quality entertainment and coasters, amazing food, and friendly staff.
  • I've been to theme parks all around the world , and this is one of my favorites.

Insider Today

One of my favorite hidden-gem theme parks is Silver Dollar City, nestled in the Ozark Mountains in Branson, Missouri.

It's a sister park to one of my other favorites, Dollywood . Both are owned by Herschend Family Entertainment, though Silver Dollar City opened first in 1960.

The park is a true hidden gem. First of all, it's an incredible value. Its highest-tier season pass currently costs under $300, and a one-day park ticket is under $100. For context, daily access to only one Disney park usually starts at $150 — and the most basic seasonal pass to Disney World is typically over $1,400.

The park itself is just great, too. I've visited theme parks all over the world and this now ranks as one of my favorites. Here's why I fell in love during my recent visit.

The park leans heavily into its old-school mountain-town theme

Themed to resemble an 1880s mountain village, Silver Dollar City had an authentic feel thanks to the local, multigenerational craftsmen who work in the park throughout its shops and streets.

The atmosphere felt both immersive and transportive as I discovered unique shopping opportunities, like hand-carved furniture, glass-blown home décor, and homemade candy.

Demonstrations were a big part of my experience, and I got to watch people altering leather, carving wood, and blowing glass — all things I'd never seen done in a theme park before.

Even the park's main guide, The Pathfinder, was themed.

It's designed to look like an old-school newspaper and contains a map, showtimes, and information on current events.

It's also built on top of a cave, which visitors can tour

The park is built on top of one of the oldest attractions in the area, Marvel Cave. Theme-park admission includes a tour of the caves, which was incredible.

We traveled 300 feet down into the limestone cave for a stunning view of the Cathedral Room, one of the largest cave rooms in the country.

The park is also home to some of my favorite roller coasters and a lot of unique attractions

The park blends its history with the future in the form of precedent-setting roller coasters .

My favorites include Outlaw Run, one of the steepest wooden coasters in the world, and Time Traveler, one of the steepest, tallest, and fastest spinning coasters in the world.

There are also unique attractions at Silver Dollar City that I haven't experienced anywhere else — Grandfather's Mansion was one of my favorites.

Grandfather's Mansion is a classic fun-house-style walkthrough attraction that's been at the park for decades. It was pure fun playing with my senses through different rooms in the mansion, including an upside-down room and an off-balance room.

Related stories

But above all, my favorite attraction is Fire in the Hole . The current reiteration pays homage to the original over-50-year-old indoor dark coaster. In its newer version, the $30 million attraction combines the nostalgia of the original with the technology of today.

The ride is of a high quality I don't see often outside of Disney or Universal parks.

The food is fantastic and unique

I'm a big foodie — especially at theme parks — and I was happy this park's eats lived up to the hype.

Silver Dollar City has the usual theme-park offerings, like hamburgers and hot dogs, but also offers many unique bites like its famous cinnamon bread and hand-twisted pretzels.

One of my favorite eateries on the property was Rivertown Smokehouse, which served some of the best barbecue I've ever had .

Visitors could watch staff smoke and carve food right in front of them in the open-air kitchen. I really enjoyed the smoked turkey and succotash and their accompanying sauces.

I also liked stopping at Eva & Delilah's, the bakery located by the park's exit, to pick up homemade treats on the way home.

The entertainment was outstanding

Tons of shows and events were happening at Silver Dollar City during my visit. The park brings in national acts throughout the year for different musical festivals — and access to these performances is included with regular park tickets.

I really enjoyed the park's iconic Silver Dollar City Saloon comedy show, which has been entertaining guests for over 50 years.

During my visit, the park was also offering a Broadway-style musical production of A Dickens' Christmas Carol. Housed in a full-scale theater, the show blew me away and was comparable to national productions I've seen.

I was also impressed by An Old Time Christmas, the theme park's seasonal event . It was unlike any Christmas event I've experienced at a theme park.

In addition to having seasonal foods and shows, the park had millions of lights and hundreds of decorated trees. It felt incredibly festive, and I loved walking around.

Every staff member I interacted with in the park was incredibly friendly and kind

I've visited theme parks all over the world, but I've yet to meet staff members as friendly as the ones at Silver Dollar City.

Many of the longtime employees were almost like characters in themselves, with throngs of guests waiting to meet and chat with them.

A highlight of my visit was meeting June Ward, who heads up the park's candy store, Brown's Candy Factory. She's worked at the park for over 50 years.

My visit was comparable on all levels to Disney, and I can't wait to return

Silver Dollar City checks all the boxes for me: high levels of theming, great attractions, fantastic food, and friendly staff.

I loved all the rides, especially the roller coasters, but I especially enjoyed exploring the shops and eating unique bites. This is a really special place that's different from any other park, and I plan to return year after year.

With its location in the touristy area of Branson there's so much to do locally — including seeing Dolly Parton's Stampede dinner show — that it makes for a great theme-park vacation far more unique than the typical visit to Disney.
