Siouxsie makes a discreet comeback at the Eurockéennes de Belfort festival

With her band the Banshees, the gothic priestess inspired a whole range of English rock, from The Smiths to The Cure to Joy Division. After a 16-year absence from France, she cast a spell in eastern France.

Siouxie at the Eurockéennes de Belfort on July 1, 2023.

After two festivals canceled by the Covid-19 pandemic and a 2022 festival spoiled by violent storms (with the loss of two days out of four), the Eurockéennes de Belfort has finally returned to its good old ways. It was back to business as usual on the Malsaucy peninsula in eastern France, where the rain had turned the ground to mud and the smell of grease proved the festival was not about to go totally vegetarian.

The headliners, made up of national acts and rappers, hardly stood out from the competition this summer: Orelsan, Lomepal, Phoenix and Pomme. The presence of Shaka Ponk and veterans Indochine on the closing night, Sunday, July 2, still left room at Eurockéennes for rock, at its most brutal with the surgical strikes of metalheads Gojira.

For its 35 th edition, the Eastern giant nevertheless treated itself to a French exclusive. Siouxsie, the high priestess of Albion Gothic, performed on Saturday night after a long absence: Her last concert in France was at L'Elysée-Montmartre in Paris in 2007. This discreet, below-the-radar return defies all the laws of modern promotion – no press interviews, no T-shirts at the merch stand and, above all, no new album.

In the wake of the Sex Pistols

The latest, and the only one without an associated band – The Banshees, from 1976 to 1996 and The Creatures from 1981 to 2005 – aren't really recent, as Mantaray was released in 2007. Since then, there's been nothing but a single, "Love Crime," for the series Hannibal in 2015. In fact, television was how new generations discovered the quasi-retired singer, when her song "Spellbound" was selected for Stranger Things in 2022 . Listening to this masterpiece, many must have thought it was an unreleased PJ Harvey track. Except that the Dorset wild girl was 12 in 1981.

Siouxsie is one of the most original and influential artists to emerge in the wake of the Sex Pistols. It's something that's been confirmed in retrospect, with the succession of post-punk revivals since the 2000s. By the time the first Iroquois crests were rising in London, Susan Ballion had opted for an Indian name, pronounced like her nickname (Suzie). She became one of the leading figures in the famous Bromley Contingent, the fan club that accompanied Johnny Rotten's band.

At the time, not knowing how to play, let alone sing, was a Dadaist asset. So she formed the Banshees with apprentice bassist Steven Severin. Their first album The Scream (1978), with its mournful guitars, tribal drums and the voice of an asocial refugee in an imaginary world seeking to exorcise her childhood traumas, was to inspire everything musically important under Margaret Thatcher's England: Joy Division, The Cure, The Smiths. It was a founding statement of the Cold Wave aesthetic. The Banshees didn't stop there, later broadening their palette to include hip-hop and exotica, as well as sounds from India and Japan.

Siouxsie Sioux performs live at the Troxy in London

Siouxsie review – Sioux shows why she’s still a definitive goth icon

Troxy, London There’s ominous bass and black eyeliner aplenty at this rare appearance by the singer – but what’s striking is the breadth of her music

A certain sense of mystery attends Siouxsie Sioux ’s sudden reappearance, 16 years after she last released an album and a decade on from her last live show. There have been no interviews, no talk of a new release, just an intermittent string of gigs and festival appearances, the latter of which have found little favour with the singer: “Bloody festivals,” she grumbles between songs, “with their short sets. ”

The more elaborate London shows – with which, it appears, her brief tour is concluding – seem to suit her better. Instead of a support act, top-hatted and sequined dancers and musicians crowd the stairs at either side of the Troxy’s auditorium, doing old-fashioned showbiz moves to 30s swing, underlaid with a ferocious techno pulse.

The old RKO Pictures logo shines out from the huge onstage screen, presumably in reference to the venue’s past life as the East End’s glitziest cinema, to the accompaniment of Cab Calloway singing Minnie the Moocher.

“How lovely to be on stage at the Troxy,” Sioux purrs delightedly, the sunniness of her mood at odds with the song she’s just performed. There is something impressively take-no-prisoners about opening the set with Night Shift, Siouxsie and the Banshees’s grim 1981 meditation on the Yorkshire Ripper murders, with music that sounds like bad weather and a refrain of “fuck the mothers, kill the others”.

In truth, this doesn’t need the dancers and references to Hollywood’s golden age to feel like an event: the audience create that atmosphere themselves. There are people here who have travelled from the US and others who clearly aren’t minded to let a punishing heatwave affect their sartorial choices. It’s hard not to be slightly awestruck by the sight of devoted goths in full makeup and black PVC, which, given the temperature inside the venue, feels less like a fashion statement than a death wish.

Still, it attests to Sioux’s lasting impact. You can argue for hours about the exact roots of goth, but the Banshees – whether they like it or not – were the heralds of one of the most pervasive subcultures of all: even in a post-tribal landscape, you still see kids hitting the black hair dye and eyeliner, albeit rebranded as emo.

Siouxsie performing at the Troxy.

Tonight’s set underlines the strength of the band’s music, even if Sioux occasionally struggles amid the murky PA. What’s striking is its breadth. For every song that defines the sound of goth – the rumbling drums, ominous bass and effect-heavy guitar of Sin in My Heart and Arabian Knights – there’s something that strikes out beyond far its confines: Kiss Them for Me’s booming breakbeat and buoyant melody, the stripped-back drums and vocals of The Creatures ’ But Not Them.

The set picks its way through Sioux’s past, walking a line between crowd pleasing – Christine and Happy House – and pleasing itself. There’s no sign of Spellbound, arguably the quintessential Siouxsie and the Banshees hit, but there are quite a few album tracks, a scattering of them from Sioux’s solitary solo outing, Mantaray.

The best of the latter is set closer Into a Swan, which employs grinding industrial guitars and tabla drums. It reflects on the turbulence of an adolescence that saw the singer go from a troubled suburban schoolkid to the stuff of 1976’s suburban nightmares: the “punk shocker” plastered across the tabloids’ front pages, combining sonic gut-punch with lyrics that are strangely moving in their devotion to the transformative power of music and makeup: “What in the world is happening? … this change is my design”.

It makes you wish Sioux would follow Mantaray up, however belatedly. Perhaps she will, but she isn’t saying: after an encore of Hong Kong Garden, she disappears, the huge sleeves of her baby-blue dress floating behind her, the enigma of her reappearance unsolved.

Siouxsie Sioux Is Having A Moment Thanks To ‘Wednesday,’ Here’s Everything Gen Z Needs to Know About This Trailblazing Goth Rocker

While goth culture has never fully disappeared, it certainly is under a spotlight right now, with the growing popularity of Netflix’s series Wednesday , starring Jenna Ortega. For her role as Wednesday Addams, Ortega choreographed a dance that would end up going viral on TikTok. When asked about how she came up with the dance, Ortega stated she pulled inspiration from videos of goth kids in clubs from the ‘80s, and pointed toward music legends such as The Cramps, New-wave singer Lene Lovich, and queen of the night, Siouxsie Sioux.

Siouxsie Sioux, born in 1957 in London, England as Susan Janet Ballion, is best known for her gothic-rock/post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees. The group rose to fame during the historical UK punk movement in the late 1970s, and went on to become one of the most successful bands that originated in that era. According to journalist Kris Needs , Siouxsie and the Banshees can be described as “Fearlessly experimental but boasting an uncanny pop sensibility, their 20-year reign would see them invent goth while regularly enlivening the charts with edgy, classic singles.”

While many within the goth subculture debate who it was that actually “invented” what we now know as goth, there is no question that Siouxsie and the Banshees created a lasting impact with their quintessential hits such as “Spellbound,” “Halloween,” and “Peek-a-Boo.”  The group even broke into top 40 radio with singles such as “Dear Prudence” (a cover of The Beatles song) and “Hong Kong Garden,” which reached number 7 on the UK singles chart in 1978.

Siouxsie Sioux and friend and future Banshees bassist Stephen Severin bonded over their love of the band Sex Pistols . They were loyal fans and followed the band on tour, and were even part of what is now known as Bromley Contingent , a group of punk young adults who were devoted to the Pistols. Their membership in this group would lead to the formation of Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1976 with help from Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren.

Siouxsie and the Banshees was not the only creative project of Sioux’s, as she and Banshees drummer (and former husband) Budgie also worked together to form the band The Creatures, which began as a side project and then blossomed into a full-time gig after The Banshees officially dissolved in 1996. Siouxsie Sioux has also put out some incredible solo work, ranging from haunting mid-tempo hits like “Love Crime”, to more grungy, rock-centric songs such as “Into a Swan.”

siouxsie sioux tour 2023 europe

Siouxsie’s easily recognizable look has served as inspiration for goths everywhere. She can most often be seen wearing fishnets, leather, spiked jewelry, and wearing her hair in a spiky updo. Her iconic dark eye makeup pattern has become a recognizable image among goths and in pop culture as a whole, appearing on T-shirts , stickers, patches, and album covers. Sioux stated this in a 2005 interview on her iconic fashion , “I think it was probably one of the first looks and attitudes to come along to empower women, and I know I felt so powerful and strong walking out in the street. Nothing frightened me.” In this same interview , Siouxsie expressed her love for “Vivienne and Malcolm’s shop” in reference to the fashion shop owned by Malcolm McLaren and the late legendary punk fashion designer Vivienne Westwood.

Siouxsie’s success as a musician was no easy feat, as the music industry was not ready to accept women as global superstars who didn’t fit into a certain mold. According to Sioux , “The industry found it totally unacceptable that women could run around looking and sounding like that and with that attitude.”

And now, the moment that goths and punks have been waiting for for a decade has finally arrived– Siouxsie Sioux is back! After not performing since Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival in 2013, Siouxsie and the Banshees have just announced a European tour in addition to a stop in the US. Siouxsie will be headlining Cruel World Festival on May 20th in Pasadena, CA along with Iggy Pop. More information on Siouxsie’s tour dates and how to buy tickets can be found here .

Siouxsie and the Banshees also released their ninth compilation album, All Souls, in October of 2022. The album includes some of The Banshees greatest hits that also celebrate the fall season. We’re hoping this means we may also be getting a Siouxsie and the Banshees full reunion tour soon!

Regardless, we’re happy to see Siouxsie reclaiming her rightful place in the moonlight where she belongs. With her mesmerizing performances, powerful lyrics, and subculture-defining looks, Siouxsie is a feminist icon, as well as a role model to all who strive to be a creative force and look amazing while doing it.
