Winter sports may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Appalachian Mountains, much less powder-y slopes of North Carolina ski resorts. The area is known for warmer outdoor pursuits , boasting some of the best climbing, kayaking, and mountain biking east of the Rockies .

But in the Blue Ridge Mountains —Western North Carolina’s section of the Appalachians—there are a handful of wholly unexpected ski resorts that are worth a visit.

With a general focus on family-oriented experiences and excellent terrain parks, North Carolina’s ski and snowboard scene is minute but mighty. Thanks to the region’s generally mild winters, the area’s snowmaking capacity is top-notch, which often means excellent conditions daily, no matter the forecast. (It also makes for some great t-shirt weather in the early and later parts of the season.) Plus, as areas like Charlotte , North Carolina’s Research Triangle ( Raleigh , Durham, and Chapel Hill), and Greenville , South Carolina, continue to attract more and more transplants from the Northeast, many who are used to weekend ski trips to the Green or White Mountains or the Poconos, the Blue Ridge winter sports scene offers plenty of action just a few hours’ drive away.

You will need to temper some expectations: The Rockies these are not. With an average elevation of under 800 feet, you may spend just as much time on the lift as you do on the snow. But if you’re a local looking to get your ski or snowboard fix without getting on a plane, or if you’re visiting the area in winter and want a day of adventure, North Carolina ski resorts offer more than enough snowbound fun to warrant a detour.

Centered around the Boone and Blowing Rock area to the north, and Asheville a bit further south, North Carolina’s mountains boast at least five ski areas that are well worth visiting—read on for details.

Sugar Mountain Resort has no shortage of steep challenging runs.

Sugar Mountain Resort has no shortage of steep, challenging runs.

Sugar Mountain Resort

Sugar Mountain, North Carolina

Due to its bounty of runs and the fact that it has the most vertical of any of North Carolina’s ski mountains at 1,200 feet, Sugar Mountain is North Carolina’s largest and arguably most well-known ski area. What the others on this list lack in expert trails, Sugar more than makes up for with plenty of steep, challenging runs geared toward veteran skiers and snowboarders.

Of course, if you’re in search of the greens and the blues, you’ll have plenty to keep you occupied. And Sugar is loaded with eight lifts, including six-passenger lifts and a new high-speed line that spirits you to the peak in just over two-minutes, which can easily make you forget about the lack of vertical.

The pass situation:  Single-day adult passes are $58 Monday through Friday and $84 on weekends and holidays. Passes for juniors run $40 and $59 respectively.

Where to après, eat, and drink:  For those who aren’t only interested in blasting down the mountain, Sugar boasts an excellent lodge for après- (or  avant- ) ski, along with tubing, ice skating, and even snowshoeing options. Just four miles down the road you find the ultra-charming little mountain town of Banner Elk, where you’ll be doing most of your non-slope hanging. Food and drink options are plentiful but check out  Sorrento’s Italian Bistro for some classic Sicilian fare (and carbo loading) or  Nguyen’s Asian Grill for bone-warming pho.

Where to stay:  There are  plenty of homeshare options on Airbnb and VRBO.

Beech Mountain Ski Resort

Beech Mountain, North Carolina

Whereas Sugar is perhaps North Carolina’s most well-known mountain, Beech , as locals call it, might be its favorite. Though the vertical drop is a few hundred feet less than Sugar (830 feet), the mountain itself is taller. At over 5,500 feet, Beech boasts the claim of not only being the highest ski area in North Carolina, but the whole of the Eastern United States .

With seventeen trails and eight lifts, there is plenty of room at Beech for everyone. And Beech Mountain boasts excellent night skiing, with the lifts running until 9p.m. daily during the bulk of the season.

One of the best parts about Beech and Sugar Mountains are their proximity to one another. Just forty minutes separate the mountains and, if you’re looking for a mix-it-up kind of weekend, you can easily ride both.

The pass situation:  Full-day passes at Beech start at $48 during the week for adults and $79 on the weekend, $38 and $59 for juniors and seniors.

Where to après, eat, and drink:  Like Sugar Mountain, Beech is just a few minutes up the road from the town of Banner Elk. But it also has its own selection of great places to eat and drink, such as  Beech Mountain Brewing Co. , which is open daily from 10a.m. to 6p.m., and the  5506’ Skybar , which is only accessible to riders and skiers with a valid lift ticket. You should also check out local favorite,  Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria .

Cataloochee Ski Area is geared toward beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.

Cataloochee Ski Area

Maggie Valley, North Carolina

Roughly 50 minutes directly west of Asheville, at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains, Cataloochee Ski Area is North Carolina’s oldest It’s geared more toward the beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, being small in stature and featuring just 740 feet of vertical, but does offer eighteen runs spread across five lifts and one terrain park.

The resort is also home to one of the world’s best snowboarders ; X Games gold medalist and world-class rider Zeb Powell, who grew up riding Cataloochee’s runs and perfecting his madcap style in its terrain park. In fact, Powell credits Cataloochee’s lack of vertical as one of the main reasons he developed his singular style of uber-creative snowboarding.

The pass situation:  On weekdays, adults can ski for $49 and juniors for $39. Weekend rates are $79 and $59.

Where to après, eat, and drink: Load up before you hit the slopes at the beloved local haunt  Joey’s Pancake House . And after? Definitely stop in to  Frankie’s Italian Trattoria for some hearty Italian. Like most North Carolina mountain towns, you’re never far from an excellent brewski. In Maggie Valley, you’ll find your beer at  BearWaters Brewing Company .

Where to stay:  When skiing Cataloochee, the best bet for resting your head is in nearby Maggie Valley. There, you’ll find a few budget hotel options and a more rustic lodge called the  Maggie Valley Creekside Lodge .

Appalachian Ski Mtn.

Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Known simply as “App” by the locals (like how Boone’s Appalachian State University is simply called “App State” around North Carolina), this diminutive ski area boasts one of the most highly-regarded collections of terrain parks on the East Coast.

With three in total—one of which is reconfigured and rebuilt on a weekly basis— App is the perfect spot for the more stunt-savvy skier and snowboarder. Included in these parks is one of only eleven Burton Progression Parks in North America. But be prepared to sit through a short video and complete a ten-question quiz if you’re planning to use one of the upper-level areas, as certification is required to ride them.

If boxes and rails and jumps aren’t your thing, App features twelve trails, the majority of which are intermediate. Coupled with just 365 vertical feet, App is perfect for the beginner and intermediate alike. With slopes open and lit until 10p.m. on weeknights and midnight on the weekends, you can enjoy a full day of riding and then some.

The pass situation:  Weekday tickets run $46, going up to $71 on Saturdays and Sundays; they're $31 and $55 for juniors and seniors. Given App’s proximity to App State University, students can score weekday passes for just $37.

Where to après, eat, and drink:  Blowing Rock is one of North Carolina’s most beloved small towns, featuring an abundance of food and drink options. Be sure to check out the  Speckled Trout Restaurant and Bottle Shop for top-notch regional fare (and some of those craft brews that Western North Carolina has quickly become famous for). If you’re after something a bit more upscale, hit the Best Cellar Restaurant , a fine-dining staple since 1975. Of course, Boone is just down the road with even more options, high-, middle-, and low-brow alike.

Where to stay:  Established in 1846, the  Chetola Resort is one of the finest and most historic hotels in Western North Carolina. Meanwhile, the  Mountainaire Inn is one of the most highly rated budget hotels in America.

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort

Mars Hill, North Carolina

A few hours down the Blue Ridge range, past the Pisgah National Forest , you’ll find the ultra-charming mountain city of Asheville. Known for the massive Biltmore mansion and a robust craft-beer scene, Asheville is smack in between two of the Blue Ridge’s best small ski areas, making it a perfect home base to hit both mountains over a weekend.

Thirty minutes north of the city is Wolf Ridge Ski Resort . With a peak elevation of 4,700 feet and 700 feet of vertical, Wolf Ridge is the smallest of the area’s ski slopes. But with only two of its fifteen slopes rated as advanced, Wolf Ridge is a great mountain for beginner and intermediate riders, and is amazing for families. Like any small ski area, what it may lack in vertical action, it more than makes up for with a top-notch lodges and night skiing.

The pass situation:  Day passes for adults cost $47 on weekdays and $76 on the weekend. Students and juniors can score a ticket for $37 and $56 respectively. Seniors ride free.

Where to après, eat, and drink:  Your best bet for entertainment when skiing Wolf Ridge is in nearby Asheville, which boasts some of the best eating and drinking in the South.  Tupelo Honey , with its modern take on classic Southern cuisine, is perhaps Asheville’s most famous and beloved eatery. If beer is your thing, there are few better places to be than Asheville, which is easily one of America’s best brewery towns. But if you’re going to check out only one of them, head to Highland Brewing Company , which is the “largest independent, family-owned brewery in the Southeast.”

Where to stay:  If you want to stay closer to the mountain than Asheville, opt for the stately  Bald Mountain House at Wolf Laurel Resort B&B is just down the road.

Asheville, more of a bigger city feel, has gained a reputation as a bit of a hipster haven. Architecture buffs will love wandering downtown which features a number of Art Deco buildings. It’s a vibrant place, for sure. Hop on LaZoom, the bright purple buses to learn some interesting and unique facts about the city's founding. Do some shopping at the open-air Grove Market. 5 Top-Rated Ski Resorts in North Carolina, 2023/24

Written by Lana Law Updated Dec 7, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

The mountains of North Carolina offer some unexpected treats for skiers and boarders. Far enough south to dodge the extreme cold temperatures that often accompany the ski resorts in the northern states, and high enough to deliver some serious vertical, the ski resorts in North Carolina are a tempting destination.

The ski resorts in North Carolina emphasize family skiing , with a mix of beginner runs to get the budding Olympians interested in the sport, and more adventuresome trails for mom and dad to cruise like they did before the children arrived.

Snowmaking capabilities at these mountains are outstanding and allow for a constant supply of fresh snow and endless days of great conditions. Lift ticket prices are extremely good value , and families in particular will find these resorts have everything they're looking for.

Quaint mountain towns set in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains add to the experience, and come with ample après-ski opportunities and a full range of lodging options. Two of North Carolina's best ski resorts are located within 10 to 15 minutes of the small town of Banner Elk , just a little over two hours from Charlotte. This is a perfect base for skiers wanting to spend more than just a day on the slopes.

For a complete look at the best places to ski and where to stay, see our list of top ski resorts in North Carolina.

1. Sugar Mountain Ski Resort

2. beech mountain ski resort, 3. appalachian ski mountain, 4. cataloochee ski area, 5. hatley pointe boutique mountain resort (formerly wolf ridge), north carolina's ski season, map of ski resorts in north carolina.

Boarders on a run at Sugar Mountain

Offering the largest ski area in North Carolina , the most diverse range of runs, and the most vertical (1,200-foot vertical drop), it's hard to beat a day of skiing at Sugar mountain.

The Mountain

If you are looking for a mountain to accommodate everyone from beginners to experts , this is the place to come. Unlike some other ski resorts in the state, here you can find steep runs and challenging sections, as well as plenty of greens and blues for beginners and intermediate skiers on Sugar's 21 runs.

Although the runs aren't overly long, with night skiing as an option, you'll still be able to crank up some serious vertical in a big session. Sugar Mountain has 125 acres of skiable terrain and eight lifts , including six-passenger and four-passenger high-speed versions.

If you haven't skied here recently, you may be forgiven for wondering why your legs are tired. The reason for this unexpected fatigue is the massive amount of vertical you are bagging because of the installation of the new high-speed detachable quad lift. This new lift replaced the Oma's Meadow chair, cutting the ride time from nine minutes to only two.

The new lift also boosted uphill capacity dramatically; now 2,400 skiers can get to the top, the days of long lift lines at Sugar Mountain are gone! The downside is that there are people on the runs.

Off the slopes, the lodge with a large outdoor deck and indoor sitting area, is a wonderful place to relax in the sun, have lunch, and watch the action on the slopes. If your legs need a break from skiing, you can check out the resort's tubing park and skating rink, or even go snowshoeing.

The main town in the area is Banner Elk , just 10 minutes from Sugar Mountain Resort. Staying here is your best option, and it also allows you to easily access nearby Beech Mountain ski resort. If you are staying a few nights, you can ski both mountains.

Statue in Banner Elk

The population of Banner Elk is only 1,100 people, but it is well set up for visitors. You can find a selection of B&Bs and small inns, as well as reliable larger hotels like the Best Western Mountain Lodge at Banner Elk , which offers regular rooms and two-room suites, perfect for families.

When it comes to dining, you can find some exceptional meals in this town. Two popular restaurant choices are the upscale Sorrento's Italian Bistro , or the more casual and cozy Banner Elk Cafe and Lodge .

View from upper deck at Beech Mountain

If you ask around about the best ski destinations in North Carolina, Beech Mountain will undoubtedly come up as a top contender. Not only does it boast the highest peak elevation of any ski area in the eastern USA at 5,506 feet, but it also has a distinct and exciting energy that sets it apart from the rest.

Eight lifts service the mountain's 17 runs , spread across 95 skiable acres . The total vertical drop is 830 feet . The replacement of the Lift #1 double chair with a brand-new fixed grip quad has proven to be a success with smaller lift lines and skiers consistently piling up more vertical.

The new location of the terrain park in the Powder Bowl now provides a much-improved experience with all the latest humps, bumps, rails, and other fun features to test your skills. The area where the old terrain park used to be has become a favorite area for beginners and has its own surface lift. With night skiing, keeners can stay on the slopes until 9pm, seven days a week during the main ski season.

At the base is a Bavarian-style lodge and restaurant with a sunny and inviting deck, as well as indoor space, looking out over the runs. At the top of the mountain is an outdoor deck serving beverages, where you'll find chairs and picnic tables, and incredible views over the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you aren't a hardcore skier or boarder looking to ski from opening until closing, spending some time relaxing at either of these places makes the day much more enjoyable.

Beech Mountain hosts a number of fun events throughout the ski season and one of the most popular (and colorful!) is the Retro 80s weekend that takes place near the end of February each year. For this crazy weekend, the slopes are filled with skiers dressed in neon-colored ski outfits that have been hanging in the back of their closets. With prizes and all kinds of kooky contests and 80s bands, this is considered "the" social event of the winter.

At the base of the mountain are a skating rink and tubing park. If you have members in your group who aren't interested in skiing, these are good options.

If you are only planning on skiing at Beech Mountain, you may want to stay in the town of Beech Mountain , just a few minutes from the ski hill. Keep in mind, it is set at an elevation of approximately 5,500 feet and is the highest town in North Carolina. If you are coming from a coastal area, you will likely feel some of the effects of the altitude. The town has a population of just over 300 but does offer a selection of hotels and restaurants catering to the ski crowd. A good option up here is the Beech Alpen Inn .

Alternatively, you may want to make Banner Elk your base , which is set at a much lower elevation (3,700 feet), offers a wider selection of amenities, and is the obvious choice if you are skiing both Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain Resorts.

Appalachian Ski Resort

Appalachian is a family-focused, old-school ski resort, but for most skiers and boarders, App, as it is mostly commonly known, is all about the terrain parks.

Appalachian's three terrain parks are what differentiates it from the rest of the North Carolina ski resorts. That said, this is also a great resort for beginners and families, with non-threatening slopes and groomed runs, perfect for new or intermediate level skiers.

The large lodge at the base, with a huge deck overlooking the slopes and a stone fireplace inside, is a throwback to the earlier days of skiing.

Apps terrain parks are what draw most serious riders to this resort. To ride the upper level terrain parks, everyone is required to first pass a test, which can be taken online or on-site, to obtain a Park Pass. This is a safety requirement and one that is appreciated by most riders.

Another unique feature at App is the lift ticket system. Flex tickets are good for eight consecutive hours , meaning if you arrive in the afternoon, you can still get in a solid eight hours of skiing or boarding, as the resort offers night skiing until 10pm weeknights and until midnight on the weekends.

The closest town to Appalachian Ski Mountain is Blowing Rock , one of the best small towns in North Carolina. Here you'll find a decent selection of hotels and restaurants to suit every budget and taste. About 15 minutes from the hill is Boone , a more lively college town of about 19,000 people, with a full range of hotels, restaurants, shops, and a lovely downtown.

Some of the best hotel options in Boone are the Hampton Inn & Suites , if you are looking for a higher-end property, and the Sleep Inn , for both comfort and great value. For some tasty Indian food, head to the Mint Cuisine of India for either a dine-in or take-out meal.

Cataloochee Ski Area

Farther east than the other ski resorts in the state and set on the edge of the Smoky Mountains, Cataloochee is the oldest ski area in North Carolina , having opened a year earlier than Appalachian.

Five lifts service 18 runs and one terrain park, targeted largely to beginner and intermediate skiers and boarders. This is a wonderful hill for new skiers or beginners looking to advance their skill level. Cataloochee Ski Area offers night skiing seven days a week throughout the main season.

At the base of the hill is a rustic lodge with a patio, serving decent food. The road up is steep and curving, so be prepared if the conditions are snowy.

Although not located at the ski resort, Cataloochee operates a tubing facility called Tube World . You can find it on the main street of Maggie Valley across from Ghost Town in the Sky. A separate ticket is required to slide.

The closest place to base yourself for skiing at Cataloochee Ski Area is in Maggie Valley , just a few miles from the hill. Hotels range from mid-range to budget. Good options include the Best Western Mountainbrook Inn or the more economical A Holiday Motel .

Alternatively, Asheville is less than an hour from Cataloochee, and commuting is definitely an option.

Cataloochee is part of the Indy Pass program.

Base lodge at Wolf Ridge

Hatley Pointe is a small but charming ski resort about 40 minutes north of Asheville. Formerly known as Wolf Ridge, the resort was recently purchased and rebranded. The new owners have invested in new snowmaking and plans are afoot to renovate the main lodge.

The top elevation is 4,700 feet and the total vertical drop is 700 feet . The 14 runs , serviced by four lifts (including two magic carpets), are mainly for beginner and intermediate level skiers and boarders, and perfect for families. Hatley Point also offers night skiing and snowboarding.

The impressive lodge, with a charming rustic décor, features three huge stone fireplaces, where you can pull up a wooden rocking chair and settle in next to a roaring fire. Huge windows on two levels look out to the base of the runs.

The drive up to the resort is easy. Before you reach the ski area, you'll come to a manned gate where you'll be given a pass. Parking is free.

Hatley Point offers a limited amount of accommodation for large groups looking to rent a townhome. You can contact them through their website. The next best options are to stay in Erwin, TN at the Mountain Inn & Suites, or at the Comfort Inn in Mars Hill, NC. Asheville , which has a full range of hotel options, is 30 minutes away.

Official site: https://www.hatleypointe.com/

North Carolina's ski season is shorter than areas to the north. This varies by year but generally, resorts are open by mid- to late November. With the exception of Wolf Ridge, which may open later, they are almost always open in time for Thanksgiving . Be prepared for deteriorating conditions between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when temperatures can warm up and melt the snow.

In general, you won't need to bring a whole lot of cold weather gear to ski in North Carolina. The mountains are relatively low, and daytime temperatures are usually just a bit below freezing. Late February and into March is when the skiing is at its best. The days start to get longer, are usually warm with the sun regaining some of its strength, and the snowpack base at its deepest.

The season wraps up near the end of March , although Wolf Ridge tends to close earlier in March.

Skiing in North Carolina: Big Times on the West Side

North Carolina is a beautiful area, and many find the warmth that it brings inviting. However, many people also come to this state for the skiing. Come winter, you can find seven ski resorts clustered in the western part of the state and ready to introduce to the skiing in North Carolina. Take a break from trying to catch the big wave, and look to catch big air on the slopes of the Appalachian Mountains.

A Ski Resort for Everyone in North Carolina

With seven different ski resorts throughout the state, choosing one can be a challenge for the indecisive. Each provides varying degrees of hills, but they all welcome beginners and experts alike. Of course, if you have the time, we recommend visiting a few different ski areas. It doesn’t take long to resort hop.

At the Cataloochee ski area, they welcome all winter sports and even hold tournaments on the slopes. Sugar Mountain is popular for the younger crowds because of the scarier drops down the hills, and amazing snowboarding trails. Mars Hill has folk music that you can sit back and listen to inside the lodge. Each particular slope and resort welcomes one and all whether it’s just for a vacation, or just for the day. Rentals are always available, and faces will quickly become familiar.

What You Should Know about Skiing in North Carolina

The highest mountains throughout the state provide ideal conditions for snowmaking, since the lower portions remain a comfortable temperature throughout the year. Rental equipment and instructions are both provided at each of the resorts, as well as affordable accommodations. While you might not have thought of skiing throughout the state, it might be an ideal way to make your winter vacation one that you can always remember.

A New Season for Skiing in North Carolina

Nobody knows for sure what effects climate change will have on the skiing in North Carolina. It could be that, because warmer air holds more moisture, bigger snowstorms are bound to dump their loads over the western parts of the state.

In the meantime, there’s already been a change due to better snow-making and trail maintenance strategies. Consider some of the recent snow seasons at Sugar Mountain, for example. In 2015, there were 24 more ski days at the resort than there were in 2010, despite the fact that it snowed almost twice as much as in 2010. More and more, locals are finding that they can start skiing in early November all the way through the end of March.

Book Online and Save Money

Plenty of resorts offer discounts for large parties as well as ski-and-stay packages. If you wish to not stay at the resort, there are multiple hotels and motels in the area that are ready and willing to take on skiers. And don’t forget to check online with us to let us help you take advantage of a 20% discount on your rentals. Have fun when you hit those slopes. The skiing in North Carolina is ready to welcome one and all.

Our Top Picks

3. wolf ridge.

skiresort5

Located in the sparsely populated Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is family-run and has been offering a traditional warm welcome to families since 1968.

Fun for Kids

Wolf Ridge has experienced instructors taking private lessons with kids aged five years and up. One-on-one tuition, while more expensive, is a quicker way to improve ability, where individual instruction can concentrate on the areas where it’s needed most.

Group lessons are also on offer for those aged five and above and last one hour. For first-time skiers or snowboarders, group lessons are offered for kids aged eight years and older

Family Skiing

The summit at Wolf Ridge rises to 4700 ft through a densely wooded hillside. The skiable terrain covers 54 acres and is mainly composed of tree-lined runs and glades. There is a 700 ft (213 m) vertical fall to the base elevation providing enough drop for the longest run of Broadway which is 1800 feet (550 m) long.

Of the 15 runs four are classed beginner, nine classed intermediate and two classed advanced. There are two chair lifts and two surface lifts. All the runs and the tubing park are floodlit for night-time activity and snowmaking covers 100% of the runs.

The tubing park is 350 ft long and is unusual in that there are no individual chutes to follow. Instead, the slope is open, and tubers can link horizontally to slide down the hill together. The tubing park is open Mon-Sat 9 AM to 10 PM.

Off the Slopes

Wolf Mountain Resort offers numerous cabins, mountain chalets, and condos on the resort.

What We Love About Wolf Ridge

  • It’s a smaller resort where beginner families won’t feel intimidated
  • The resort lodging is convenient for families
  • There are enough blue and intermediate runs for beginners to progress

Wolf Ridge Stats

2. beech mountain.

2. Beech Mountain

Beech Mountain has a welcoming Alpine village at its base and is the highest resort east of the Rockies and also has recently upgraded snowmaking. The amenities and services on offer mean that Beech Mountain is often regarded as one of the leading resorts on the East Coast.

Childcare at Beech Mountain comes courtesy of the Snowflakes Program, where toddlers aged 1-5 can spend an enjoyable day. Snacks, water, and juice are provided throughout the day along with a large playroom with toys and games.

Kamp for slightly older toddlers aged 3-5 provides all-day daycare and some activities in the snow. Traxx is the lesson at Beech Mountain for kids aged 6-12. It is aimed at complete beginners or those with some ability. The aim is to build confidence and skills in a safe setting.

For older kids, the Beech Mountain Academy offers a range of lessons in skiing and snowboarding for ages 6-18.

Beech Mountain Resort is the highest ski resort on the East Coast of North America. It has a reliable 84 inches of snow each season and recent investment means snowmaking now covers 100% of the resort runs.

The highest elevation is 5506 ft (1678 m) from where you can look over the 95 acres of skiable terrain. The resort has two beginner runs, seven intermediate, and six advanced. There are 10 lifts in all including three quad chairs and three triple chairs. Beech Mountain offers some good boarding and there are two terrain parks, the larger of the two aimed at all abilities.

A recent addition to the mountain is the glass roundhouse bar at the summit. It’s called the 5506’ Sky Bar, to recognize the elevation. It’s the ideal spot to warm up and have a drink or to relax in the sun on the outside decking. The panoramic views spread across the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Beech Mountain has also recently built a snow tubing park next to the ice-skating rink in the village. You can speed down the 700 ft chutes and then recover on the conveyor lift back to the top. The tubing park is floodlit and has a music system.

Beech Mountain has been one of the first resorts in the country to add a craft beer brewery. The Beech Mountain Brewing Company was added in 2014 and demonstrates the resort’s vision and willingness to diversify and reinvest cash to improve services.

Lodging options range from ski-in ski-out chalets and condos to traditional ski lodges and inns, as well as local apartments and holiday homes available for rent.

What We Love About Beech Mountain

  • It’s a high resort for the East Coast of North America with great views
  • It’s a compact resort with everything you need for a ski vacation
  • The childcare and lessons are kids are top-rated

Beech Mountain Stats

1. sugar mountain.

1. sugar mountain

Set in the rural hills of North Carolina, Sugar Mountain is 120 miles northwest of Charlotte with its international airport and nearby Nashville in Tennessee. The resort recently celebrated its 50 th anniversary and has become a firm favorite for locals and tourists looking for a more traditional ski resort.

Sugar Mountain prides itself on being a family-friendly resort. They demonstrate this with their policy where all kids, four and younger can ski for free.

There are two ski schools for kids, the Sugar Bear Ski School is aimed at children from 5-10 and introduces them to the equipment and skiing. For older kids aged 7-14 the Polar Bear Snowboard School introduces kids to snowboarding techniques.

The lesson price includes a lift ticket , equipment, helmet , lesson, lunch (on full days), and supervision. Ski and snowboard group lessons are available for all levels and abilities. Groups are created by ability level. Group lessons last for 1.5 hours. Group lessons are for skiers and snowboarders 8 years old and older.

Sugar Mountain also offers childcare. Bookings are taken on a first-come-first-served basis and children must be at least one year old.

Sugar Mountain offers plenty of tree cover with the runs running down through the tree line, creating plenty of interest and glades . The 21 runs fan down over one face of the hillside. In terms of difficulty, the runs are evenly split between green and blue, making Sugar Mountain ideal for beginners and those wanting to move on to intermediate runs.

For the more advanced there are three black diamond runs and one double diamond black. There are five main lifts with the Summit Express taking skiers and snowboarders straight to the top.

Snowmaking and grooming are well-established features at Sugar Mountain and 100% of the runs are covered for snowmaking. Some of the runs are additionally floodlit for night skiing.

The resort offers equipment rental and ski clothing too. This is ideal for a beginner family, where you can try it before you decide to spend money on expensive ski equipment and clothing.

Sugar Mountain has plenty to offer away from the slopes as well. The tubing park has chutes that are 700 ft long and which are serviced by a conveyor lift. Tubing sessions last for two hours and run from 10 AM until 10 PM under floodlights.

Sugar Mountain also has a 10,000 ft.² outdoor ice-skating rink located next door to the tubing park. If you’ve ever wanted to try snowshoeing, Sugar Mountain will give you a guided tour around the resort. The intensity of the tour is guided by the participants, lasts one hour, and includes snowshoe rental.

While there is no accommodation at the resort there is a good selection of family-friendly hotels and inns in the nearby village of Banner Elk and the surrounding towns.

Private condos and homes are also available to rent nearby.

What We Love About Sugar Mountain

  • Sugar Mountain is a compact resort ideally set up for first-time family skiing
  • The snowmaking is comprehensive, covering 100% of the runs
  • There is plenty to do with a tubing run, an outdoor skating rink, and guided snowshoe tours

Sugar Mountain Stats

Why choose north carolina for skiing.

North Carolina has a surprising variety of skiing potential. The resorts are smaller and family orientated, offering beginners enough scope and challenge but within the safety of a compact resort. North Carolina is further south than some of the Northern skiing States and so its resorts tend to escape the extreme cold of winter. Snowmaking in most resorts is now 100%, meaning coverage with natural snow is no longer a problem. For simple family fun at a reasonable price, North Carolina is hard to beat.

How Did We Order This List?

To help rank our top selection of ski resorts for this list we compared the following ranking factors:

We gave each factor its own weighting depending on how important we feel it is for family fun across all ages. For example, a resort with more beginner trails is higher ranked than a resort with a lower-priced family ticket - with all else being equal. That's because while cost is a factor, it's not a primary one. We may also use our editorial judgment to remove or add resorts that we believe should make the list.

When taking all of this into account, it gives us our awesome list above. We hope it was helpful in planning your next family ski vacation.
