Exclusively inclusive river cruising
Depart on a 7-night Rhône River cruise aboard ms Emerald through vineyard country that's home to some of the world's most exceptional wines.
What it's like to cruise france's rhône valley wine country, tauck exclusive – gala evening at the duché d'uzès, our exclusive gala evening at the duché d'uzès.
The Duke of Uzès kindly requests your presence at his family castle for dinner. Expect to be wined and dined at a grand château that architecturally chronicles its history, from its foundation on the site of a Roman governor's home in the first millennium to its role as the medieval residence of an exiled 9th-century Duchess, the first woman in the Occident to write a book, to its Renaissance renovation, its languish in the Revolution, its 19th- and 20th-century reincarnation as a school to its meticulous renovation in 1954 by the influential Marchioness of Crussol who reacquired the family home. Her vision comes to life in treasured keepsakes and a resplendent décor that provide a stunning setting for Tauck's exclusive gala evening.
Tauck Exclusive – Experience la Camargue
An exclusive provençal experience on a family owned ranch in la camargue.
Drive past marshy fields of grazing bulls and white horses to a privately owned ranch in la Camargue, where the Rhône meets the sea, and experience a different taste of Provençal life for Tauck guests only. It begins with a horseback welcome by the warm-hearted family who lives here, continues with a farm-fresh feast of locally produced fare and a heartfelt guitar serenade, and culminates in a display of skill by Provençal cowboys (known as gardians) that will have your heart racing at every turn.
I have traveled extensively in France, but Tauck offered new and unique experiences which would be impossible on my own. I was delighted every day.

About Booking This Tour
Travel Documents
If you are a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into France. You do not need a visa for the short duration of this journey.
If you are a citizen of another country, you should contact a French consulate or embassy to determine what travel documentation is required.
Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.
We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.
To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.
TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour
Air Information and Luggage Restrictions
AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.
TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.
AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.
Checked Luggage – General
Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).
Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.
Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.
Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.
Carry-on Luggage - General
Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.
For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.
Health, Safety and Mobility
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor onboard the riverboat. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.
If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.
The riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.
VACCINATIONS
If you are a resident of the U.S., please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .
If you are a resident of another country , please contact a French embassy or consulate to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.
To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.
The riverboat has four decks: Emerald, Ruby, Diamond and Sun. The elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and the Dining room, which includes stops at the Lounge and the Ruby Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.
On the Emerald deck, you will find a Fitness & Massage Center on board. The Fitness Center is complimentary and includes a limited variety of fitness equipment such as treadmills, stationary cycling machines and free weights. Massages are available for a fee in a private room off of the Fitness center.
The water on board the ship is potable and complimentary bottled water is placed in your cabin each day. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.
Smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking is not permitted in any cabin, restaurant, lounge or any other interior space.
PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.
SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS
The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.
On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.
Reading List
We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!
You can view the reading list here.
The south of France has a warm Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. Strong winds, known as the Mistral, can occur in the Côte d'Azur, Provence, particularly in winter and spring. Northern France, including Paris, has a temperate climate similar to southern England with warm summers, cold winters and rainfall throughout the year. From April through October, the average high temperature in Paris ranges from 60 to 80˚F (16 to 27˚C) and the average low temperature ranges from 50 to 70˚F (10 to 21˚C). In Arles the averages are 5 to 10˚F (2 to 5˚C) higher.
To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here .
What To Pack
Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .
Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.
During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual. Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men. For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable. For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers. Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested. (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)
Valet laundry service is available at the hotel and on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities are available on the riverboat by request to the front desk. Category 7 cabins feature their own irons and ironing boards.
We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.
We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:
- Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
- An optional jacket and tie for men
- Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
- Swimwear for the whirlpool on the riverboat; neither the InterContinental Paris Le Grand Hotel nor the riverboat has a swimming pool
- A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
- Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
- Insect repellent
- Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
- Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
- Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
- Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
- Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
- Daypack for camera equipment
- Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
- Copies of your travel documents to be secured in the safe in your hotel room or cabin

River Cruises in France
Seducing travelers by its first-class culture, food, art and undeniable joie de vivre, it’s hardly surprising that France attracts more than 80 million visitors a year, making it the world’s top tourist destination. From the quiet rural beauty of Normandy to the vibrant bustle of Paris, from the cool serenity of its mighty rivers like the Rhone to the dry heat of historic Provence and from the picturesque vine-clad slopes of Burgundy to the soaring majesty of the French Alps, it hardly seems possible that such rich diversity could be contained in one relatively small country.
The French love of food and wine is beyond comparison and it boasts a cuisine that’s widely acknowledged as one of the very finest in the world, with more Michelin starred restaurants than any other country. Every town and village seems to have its own unique gastronomic specialty whilst evocative names like Champagne, Calvados, Bordeaux, and Beaujolais carry their reputation before them. French cheeses are equally famous too - just think of Brie, Camembert, and Roquefort for starters.
Culturally too, there can be no disputing France’s staggering achievements: from Roman temples to Renaissance chateaux, its outstanding museums and world-class galleries, from its invention of cinema and “haute couture” the list goes on. So with all this on offer and more, there can be fewer destinations more appealing. Allez!

Viking River Cruises and Portraits of Southern France Itinerary
Anyone who has dreamed of traveling to the Burgundy and Provence regions of France would love the 8-day, "Portraits of Southern France" itinerary of Viking River Cruises . The journey links Chalon-sur-Saône north of Lyon with Avignon in the south near Marseille , sailing on the Saône and Rhône Rivers.
In 2014, Viking launched three new Longships for this itinerary— Viking Heimdal , Viking Buri, and Viking Hermod. These innovative ships, with their squared bow and sunlit Aquavit Lounge, are a great addition to this region.
Cruise the Burgundy and Provence Regions of France
Linda Garrison
The river cruise is almost all-inclusive, with all meals and complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks available during lunch and dinner. The ship also has complimentary WiFi. Although the cruise features time to sail along the rivers and enjoy the scenery, the ship also stops at some memorable ports, including visits to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The ports of call and example included activities are:
- Beune - Burgundy wine route excursion and wine tasting; visit to Hôtel-Dieu
- Lyon - Tour of the old city and free afternoon to sample the local food in the gastronomic capital of France
- Vienne - Walking tour featuring the Temple of Augustus & Livia
- Tournon - Tain l'Hermitage excursion and wine tasting
- Viviers - Evening walk through the Old Town
- Arles - Walking tour that includes Les Arènes amphitheater
- Avignon - Walking tour featuring Pont d'Avignon and the Palace of the Popes
While on the ship, guests get an opportunity to sample a variety of French cheeses, learn to make chocolate fondue, taste some Burgundy wines , listen to some French music, and attend lectures on the area. Most ports include time for shopping or exploring on your own, which is easier than on many ocean voyages since the river ships usually dock right near the city center.
Spend Time in Avignon Before or After Your River Cruise
Saône and Rhône River cruises of southern France often embark or disembark in Avignon . This popular city of about 90,000 is best-known as the residence of the Pope for 70 years in the 14th century. Not surprisingly, the most famous site in Avignon is the Palace of the Popes ( Palais des Papes ), once the center of Christianity.
The second most popular site in Avignon are the remains of Pont Saint-Bénézet or Pont d'Avignon. This ancient bridge is the subject of a well-known French nursery rhyme, Sur le Pont d'Avignon.
Avignon was a walled city in medieval times, and much of the old wall remains today. Avignon's old town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
It's a great town to spend a few days before or after a river cruise, which allows visitors time to explore the area and see nearby sites like the remarkable Pont du Gard .
The first important site visitors often see is Clock Square, or Place de l'Horlage, which is the center of activity in old town Avignon and site of the City Hall or Hotel de Ville.
The Avignon City Hall, or Hotel de Ville, is located on the town's main square, Place de l'Horlage, which is also called the Clock Square since the Clock Tower is on the back of the City Hall. The Place de l'Horloge is the center of activity in old town Avignon, with shops, restaurants, cafes, street vendors, and a carousel. The square also is the site of Avignon's large Christmas market in November and December each year.
The Clock Tower was built on the 14th or 15th century and backs up to the Hotel de Ville or City Hall on the Clock Square. The Opera Theatre is next door. Built in 1846 after a fire, the National Opera Theatre is located immediately to right of the City Hall (Hotel de Ville).
When Pope Clement V was elected in 1309, he moved the residence (and headquarters) of the Catholic Church from Italy to Avignon. Since he was French, he believed the King of France would be friendlier to the Pope. Avignon was a tiny town, and the Papacy was able to just buy the whole town.
The huge Palace of the Popes (Palais des Papes) was the residence of the Popes for 70 years. Internal conflict within the Church led to the Great Schism of the West, and a second Pope lived in Rome starting in 1378, but until the conflicts were resolved in the early 1400s, Avignon played an important role as one of the centers of Catholicism. Since six Popes were elected at the Palace in Avignon, it is still an important historical and religious site. Architects also consider the Palace one of the most impressive medieval Gothic structures in Europe.
Notre Dame des Doms is located on Place du Palais, adjacent to the Palace of the Popes, in old town Avignon. Notre Dame is Avignon's cathedral and dates back to the 12th century. The giant gilded statue of the Virgin Mary weighing over 4 tons is the most notable feature of the Cathedral. It was added in the 19th century.
Visitors to the Palace of the Popes can tour on their own, with an audio guide, or with a local guide. Entering the Palace, it's easy to identify its Gothic style by glancing up at the ceiling. The vaulted ceiling in the Palace of the Popes is a good example of Gothic architecture. Many of the walls and ceilings in the Palace were once painted or decorated with figures, but only a few of these medieval artifacts remain.
The Pope could look out onto this Grand Courtyard from the window of his bedroom. The Benedict XII Cloister is a courtyard surrounded by two levels of galleries. The lawn, galleries, and pointed archways are still used today for weddings and special events. The Cloister is named for Benedict XII since he was the Pope who ordered in built.
This huge dining room at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon is 130 feet long and 60 feet long. Although the Pope held huge banquets here, protocol made him sit separate from his 200 guests. The wooden, barrel-vaulted ceiling was added in the 20th century. Prior to that change, the ceiling looked like the night sky and was painted dark blue with yellow stars.
The Pope, Cardinals, and guests ate huge dinners in this great hall. They often had 9 courses, with 3 choices for each course. Or, about 25-30 dishes at each meal!
Medieval chefs didn't have super-strong electric exhaust fans to remove the smoke and heat from their kitchens. They had tall, funnel-like chimneys like those seen at the Palace of the Popes. This kitchen would often cook up to five oxen at a time over spits in order to feed the 1500 people working, living in, or visiting the Palace. The nearby gardens supplied the wood for the cook fires.
The North Sacristy at the Palace of the Popes links the Great Chapel to the Pope's private rooms. Although these tombs of cardinals and other spiritual dignitaries look real, they are actually plaster replicas. The Great Chapel at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon is 150 feet long and 60 feet high. Its Gothic style is like much of the rest of the Palace. This Chapel is still well-used, hosting about 60 major ceremonies each year.
Leaving the Palace of the Popes, visitors get a great panoramic view of the Pont d'Avignon from the walk up to the Jardins des Papes. When completed in the 12th century, this bridge was about 3000-feet long and had 22 arches. It extended across two rivers to a tollgate on the far side. When first built, it was the only bridge across the river between Lyon and the Mediterranean. Today only four arches remain, and the remains are a popular tourist attraction, especially for those who remember the French nursery rhyme.
The medieval Popes once grew herbs and plants in a lovely garden on the hill up from the Palace of the Popes. They also had a zoo in the garden. Today, it's a quiet place to walk, feed the ducks, and check out the panoramic views of the Pont d'Avignon and of the old town.
Les Halles may be ugly on the outside, but it's fun to walk around the inside of this market that sells produce, meats, fish, and a little bit of everything else. It's found on Place Pie.
The Jardins des Papes (Garden of the Popes) offers great views of the Rhône River and of old town Avignon. This fascinating medieval town is a marvelous place to either start or end your cruise of southern France on the Saône and Rhône Rivers.

Back in Lyon, we continue our journey on the Rhône south to Arles. This much in advance: this trip will leave you in awe, especially (river) scenery: in the Rhône Valley (Vallée du Rhône) you will glide past vineyards, sunflower fields, orchards, Provençal lavender fields and high, small villages on impressive rocky outcrops. As you continue, you will encounter the rivers Ardèche, Isère, Drôme and further south, Aigues and Ouvèze. After the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, world famous for its excellent wine, you will reach Avignon, where you will also anchor until the next day. The following day, you will head to Arles, where many preserved remains will give you a picture of the Roman Empire.

Till today Lyon, the second largest city in France, stands in the tourist shadow of the French capital Paris. However, this is completely unjustified. If you travel to Lyon in France, you will experience a wonderful mix of a historic old town, excellent cuisine, numerous festivals and picturesque surroundings. Strolling through the alleys of Lyon's old town is a real pleasure. In the medieval and Renaissance style streets and alleys, you can discover something new at every corner. A special feature of Lyon are the so-called "traboules" - passageways and staircases that allow passage through buildings and courtyards from one street to another. Due to its extensive historic fabric, large parts of Lyon are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The best view of this beautiful city can be enjoyed from the Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Gastronomy is also very important in the city on the Rhone. In the home of Paul Bocuse, you can dine excellently in more than 2,000 restaurants. In combination with the excellent wines from the surrounding area, you eat in Lyon like God in France.
Chalon-sur-Saôn
Chalon-sur-Saône is a French city located directly on the Saône River with about 45,000 inhabitants. This makes the city the largest by population in the department of Saône-et-Loire and the second largest city in Burgundy. The city of Chalon-sur-Saône is famous as the birthplace of photography. Connected with it is also the most famous citizen of Chalon-sur-Saône - Joseph Nicéphore Nièpce. Because of his inventions in the field of photography there is a museum at the "Quai des Messageries". In this museum you can see more than two million photographs, numerous artifacts, photo cameras and other photographic equipment from the past of photography. The city is very suitable as a stop on a river cruise. Chalon-sur-Saône is located directly on the banks of the Saône River, at the terminus of the Canal du Centre. The city's river port is home to the market for western Bresse, grains as well as regional wines. One of the city's attractions is the Cathedral of St. Vincent, the main part of which dates from the 12th to 15th centuries, with other elements dating back to the 8th century. Another highlight is the well-preserved old town around the cathedral of St. Vincent. In the whole country Chalon-sur-Saône is famous for the theater festival "Chalon dans la rue". The street festival has been held annually since 1986 in mid-July in the historic old town with street performers from home and abroad.
Located directly on the Saône River, Mâcon is a great getaway destination on a river cruise through France's unique river landscape. Already in the Middle Ages, the city had great importance due to its good strategic location, for example as the capital of Burgundy. Tourist highlights are the historic buildings. These include several palaces worth seeing, such as the town house or the prefecture building. The old cathedral of St. Vincent, first built in the 6th century, was destroyed during the revolution and rebuilt between 1810 and 1816 at the Place St. Vincent. Another unusual feature and a worthwhile destination is a dwelling house built of wood between 1490 and 1510. A large number of carved wooden figures make this building a rarity worth seeing.
Tournon is a French commune in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region with about 10,000 inhabitants. The Rhône River is one of the longest rivers in the country, flowing through the town. Vernon Castle is partially listed and offers a museum. It was in the castle that François de France, heir to the French throne, died in the 16th century. Traces of the nobility can still be discovered in the old town, which invites visitors to stroll around. The Jardin d'Eden lives up to its name.
Who doesn't know it, the French folk song "Sur le Pontd'Avignon", which made the town on the left bank of the Rhône world-famous ? But its true importance Avignonacquired in the 14th century, when the pope was forced to leave the city due to war. Century, when the Pope because of warlike unrest seeked exile there. True to the motto "Where the Pope is, there is Rome" dawned a brilliant period of prosperity, which was accompanied by the construction of Gothic monasteries and churches. The monumental Papal Palace resembles with its jagged parapets and gecurving towers of a fortress and serves as a unique backdropfor an annual theater festival. But it attracts not only artinterested, but also gourmets in the picturesque lavender landscape of Provence.
Roman relics, medieval evidence and romaniche architecture: Arles invites you to travel through the eras and stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the threshold to eternity. At the gates of the "little Rome" makes itself tothat the natural landscape Camargue with pink flamingos, white wild horses and wide sand dunes wide. Already van Gogh let himself be inspired by the color play of Provence and be seduced by the southern flair of the city. Art lovers can follow the traces of the master thanks to marked routes and stop at the famous "night café" at Place du Forum. Today the former seat of government of Emperor Barbarossa a place full of possibilities, where monumental buildings with motheir museums are in harmony.
The city of Tournus is located in the department of Saône-et-Loire and has about 5,500 inhabitants. The municipality is located on the banks of the Saône River and is therefore very suitable for a stopover on the river cruise. The area is characterized by viticulture and beautiful river landscapes.Tournus, 2010 starting point of a stage of the Tour de France, has for example a museum about the history of the development of the bicycle.Further highlights are the four restaurants, each with a Michelin star. The city of Tournus is the city with the highest density of star restaurants per inhabitant in the world.Another tourist attraction is the church Saint Philibert, which has a history of more than one thousand years. This makes it the oldest preserved large Romanesque building in France. With the "Hôtel-Dieu" there is an old hospital in the city, which still has a complete preserved historic furnishings and a pharmacy from the 17th century. In the complex is further integrated a museum of the city for archaeology and art history..
Looking like a sleeping beauty, Viviers sits on the right bank of the Rhône-bank. The historic town center is preserved and forms a fabulous backdrop for a trip to times long past. Through winding alleys leads a walk from the subtown, where merchants and craftsmen lived in the Middle Ages, in The Upper Town, the former refuge of the well-heeled and spiritual. Here, the richly decorated facade of the Maison des Chevaliers always discover new detailscovers. From the smallest cathedral in France, the Cathédrale Saint-Vincent, it is not far to the Belvédère de Châteauvieux. The trip is rewarded with a fantastic view over the tiled roofs of the city and the Rhône Valley.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The small commune of Châteauneuf-du Pape, is located about 2 km from the Rhône at an altitude of about 120 meters. The region is known for its excellent wine and the landscape is characterized by vineyards. The highlight of the small town, which was first mentioned in a document in 1094, is the ruins of the castle that the Avignon popes had built here as a summer residence in the 14th century. After repeated destruction during the Wars of Religion, the archbishops finally abandoned the château in the 18th century. Strolling through the picturesque village center with its enchanting historic buildings, the church Église Notre-Dame-de-l`Assomption from the 12th century catches the eye. The simple interior is rather unusual for a Catholic church and it is worthwhile to take a look inside. Again and again during the walk one meets small picturesque stores, in which the wine produced in the area can be purchased..

The French Riviera - Monaco-Monte Carlo, Cannes, Nice, Antibes
Did the Euroadventures trip to the French Riviera for Carnival at the end of February. What a great trip! Had the owner of the company, Shaun, as our trip leader and he was fantastic. Showed us a ton of great sights in Monaco, Antibes, Nice and Cannes and recommendations for food and nightlife too. The Carnival parties were super fun as the streets were packed with the parade and floats. Really worth it going up in the carousel to get great views over the parade. Even though it was February, the weather was great and we even managed a few hours on the beach in Cannes (water was too chilly to swim though). We had an amazing all you can eat mussels dinner in Nice (local specialty being seafood of course), and all the food in general was fantastic. Overall the French Riviera is like a dream destination. So much to see and do in a small connected area with the cities and seaside towns. I really felt like we got to know the destination well even though the trip is just a 3 night weekend and that's thanks to everything Euroadventures showed us and the great itinerary!

Scenic River Cruise in France : Five Stop Ever Wine Lover Needs to Make in France
Inspiration
Bordeaux Auvergne Alps - Mont Blanc
Reading time: 0 min Published on 4 January 2023, updated on 16 April 2024
From breathtakingly beautiful vineyards to a $130 million wine museum, France is the epicentre of the world’s most magnificent wines. With an abundance of multi-sensory experiences spotted throughout the country, Scenic has handpicked the most extraordinary.
1. Delight in Lillet in Bordeaux
Step back in time to 1872 in pretty Podensac in the Bordeaux countryside , and you’ll have witnessed the moment brothers Paul and Raymond Lillet decided to create France’s first aperitif . Little did they know that two centuries later, Lillet would still be the only fortified wine in France, with it now reaching iconic drink status in the country. It is the equivalent of an Aperol spritz in Italy. With Scenic , you will be taken through the scarlet red gates of the Podensac winery , where you’ll not only sample the sweet citrusy wine but will learn more about Lillet’s rich history.
2. Marvel at Cité du Vin Museum, Bordeaux
Overlooking the waters of the Bassin a Flot on the banks of the Gironde is the architecturally unique Cite du Vin , a museum dedicated to wine. Since opening in 2016, costing a momentous $130 million, it has become the ultimate destination for wine lovers. Not only in France but for the whole world. Its shape is inspired by the movement of wine swirling in a glass. Inside is a truly interactive experience, with tastings, seminars and a tour. The highlight has to be a The Buffet of the Five Senses which breaks down every wine aroma so you can finesse your nose.
3. Stylish Sips at Château de Rayne Vigneau
One of the most magical estates in France, the Château de Rayne is a masterpiece. Standing proudly above 185 acres of undulating landscape, the sprawling picture-perfect vineyards boast a rich history. For almost four centuries, the 17th century Château de Rayne has created one of the finest Sauternes in the world. With Scenic, you’ll not only enjoy a luxury wine tasting experience but also learn of the traditional methods this idyllic vineyard uses to create its superior crus. For those who like to do rather than purely watch, you can become a picker for the day or simply ride through the grounds on horseback.
4. Explore the Beajoulais Wine Region
Breathtakingly beautiful, the Beaujolais wine region stretches from Macon down towards Lyon . That’s just over 70 kilometres of magnificent vineyards, all creating one of the world’s most popular wine varieties. The countryside here is known at La Terre des Pierres Dorées , the land of the golden stones, and is doesn’t take long to realise why. Each picture-perfect village throughout this region sets the stage for limestone buildings, of all shapes and sizes. On your Scenic Space-Ship, we will glide right into the very heart of this region. You will meet a local vintner to sample some of his best vintages and learn of the history of Beaujolais’ journey to global adoration.
5. Charming Tain L’Hermitage
If you gaze up from the Rhône River, the village of Tain L’Hermitage is breathtakingly beautiful. A labyrinth of cobbled streets, framed by vibrant green countryside and an abundance of vineyards. Here you can sample the famous Côtes du Rhône wines, considered some of the best in the world. A credit to the stone-filled and fertile grounds here. You can pair your glass of wine with chocolate from Cite du Chocolat Valrhona, a museum filled with the finest chocolate in France.
On your Scenic France river cruise , you can unlock each of these remarkable highlights and so many more. Each itinerary includes Scenic Freechoice activities that you can choose according to your tastes and set a pace that feels right for you. So, whether it’s French food, wine, history, architecture or nature that appeals, the expert Scenic team are there to assist every step of the way – when you say au revoir to France, you’ll leave with vivid, lifelong memories.
To learn more about Scenic's Beautiful Bordeaux river cruise here . If you’re looking for an immersive experience in France's cuisine, Scenic offers two culinary cruises, including the 11-Day Flavours of Bordeaux and the 11-Day Tastes of Southern France. See detailed information here .

SAY "OUI" TO ADVENTURE
France cruises.
Visit France's famous Riviera, where vibrant blue waters meet coastal culture.
Savor the sweet eclecticism of France's famous Cote d'Azur. Delight in the pastiche of art and architecture in cities like Nice, Menton and Eze Sur Mer, and feast on homemade cheese and wine, as well as other delicacies inspired by Italy. Mingle with glamorous locals on pristinely manicured city beaches, or explore the coastline to find your own private piece of paradise. France is a centrally located European hot spot, so you can always use the French Riviera as a jumping-off point for a more extensive tour of the Mediterranean.

A MEDITERRANEAN MIXTURE
France's Cote d'Azur boasts a healthy helping of historic culture, but it also borrows from its Mediterranean neighbors in delightful — and delicious — ways. Sun-drenched bougainvillea vines beckon you to explore its colorful, cobbled streets.
BOLDLY BAROQUE
Centuries of Italian culture have seeped into France and its famous Baroque architectural style. The terracotta roof tiles of old town Nice might have you feeling like you're in Italy . In Menton, you can walk down the coast a bit to the city reflected in the waters, evoking the Italian city of Portofino .
ITALIAN FOOD, FRENCH AIR
Many of Nice's residents are ethnically Italian, and while you may never know where your pizza-maker hails from, taste buds don't lie: The saltiness of the pancetta, the Italian version of bacon, will be unmistakable. Feast on some savory lobster bisque, or sample clafoutis — a creamy, custardy tart typically packed with cherries — in a local patisserie.
OUT OF THE SUN, BUT STILL IN THE LIGHT
The French Riviera is hot most of the year, but getting out of the sun doesn't preclude opportunities for illumination. Visit museums dedicated to the work of French natives such as Marc Chagall and Henri Mattisse, or step into Nice's Musee Massena, which offers magical views of European paintings and sculptures from through the ages.
CATCH THE COSTAL VIBE
Umbrella-shaded city beaches or tucked-away coves of quietude? How you experience the shores of France's famous Riviera during your vacation is entirely up to you. Along the Cote d'Azur, there are as many versions of paradise as there are shades of blue.
PRICELESS PANORAMA
The details of the French Riviera are beautiful, but zooming out leads to spectacular sights as well. Take a day trip to Eze Sur Mer and enjoy the stunning view from its botanical garden, or walk up Nice's Castle Hill to see this outstanding city from a bird's-eye view.
ALL YOU CANNES ASK FOR
If you're craving more time at sea, find a French captain to take you afloat. Just head down to the docks of cities like Cannes or Nice, and inquire about hourly boat rental. Set sail on Marseille's cliff-strewn Calanque des Goudes, or head out to secluded Ile Sainte-Marguerite off the coast of Cannes.
GET NICE AND RELAXED
In the French Riviera, you don't have to go far at all to find paradise. From Nice's Promenade des Anglais to the rocky shores of Villefranche-sur-Mer, the urban beaches of the Cote d'Azur will make you forget you're anywhere near a city.
FIND YOUR INNER ROMANTIC IN THE FRENCH RIVIERA
France is the gateway to the Mediterranean — and not just to nearby vacation destinations like Monte Carlo , Italy and Spain . Use your trip to France's coast as a springboard for discovery to far-off destinations like the crystalline coast of Croatia and the gorgeous islands of Greece.
MEDITERRANEAN MEMORIES
If you're looking to explore the hidden wonders of the Mediterranean , set off for destinations farther east of France. Whether you traipse through Croatian coastal cities like Dubrovnik and Split or admire the idylls of Greece's Mykonos and Santorini islands , you'll be en-amour-ed by the French influences throughout the Mediterranean.
SPEED INTO SPAIN
While you're on the hunt for delicious local treats, why not head west to Spain and taste tapas for yourself? Visit bustling Barcelona to marvelous Malaga and destinations beyond the Gibraltar Strait (namely, the Portuguese Coast), and stop off at Le Havre port — from there, you can soak in the Gothic grandeur and quaint cafes of Paris.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Unforgettable France
The French Riviera is part of France, at least ostensibly. Both the wild coastal landscapes and eclectic city streets, however, reflect a much more international inspiration.
In Nice, tiled roofs and wood-fired pizzas might make you think you've accidentally arrived on the Amalfi Coast . The reflection of the French Riviera city of Menton in the bright blue sea water is a dead ringer for Portofino. You'll find Italian influences no matter where you go in France during your vacation.
In nature, the international lines blur even more. The wild and rocky beaches of the French Riviera, particularly those outside the city's limits, evoke a general Mediterranean vibe, with cobalt waters and limestone cliffs that don't belong to any flag and can't be described precisely in any one language.

Life moves at a slower pace along the Côte d'Azur, and while you might think you can squeeze Eze, Monaco and Cannes into your six-hour cruise stop, you should prioritize quality over quantity.
