Top 10 adventurous sports and where to try them

sports that travel

The thrill of extreme sports is a supremely popular one. There are literally millions of people all over the globe who regularly seek the adrenaline rush that comes with extreme adventurous sports. But what are extreme sports? They are typically defined as a sport that is high in risk, speed, or height.

As the world of extreme sports evolves, new activities become extreme sports examples all the time, adding to a growing list of experiences you must try. The best thing about extreme sports is they can take you, quite literally, all over the world.

Just be sure to take out extreme sports travel insurance before you go. We take a look at some of the world’s most exciting extreme sports, and the best places to try them.

Downhill skateboarding

sports that travel

Forget the local skatepark, downhill skateboarding is the coolest way to ride a board. This sport involves skating, as the name suggests, on a downhill stretch of road or track. Skaters can reach incredible speeds of up to 85 mph, which can result in fairly serious injuries so make sure to wear plenty of protective equipment.

Where to try downhill skateboarding? California, the birthplace of skateboarding itself, is one of the best places for this extreme sport. Santa Barbara is a great choice and also offers sun, sea, and surf all year round. California is the perfect base for skaters who want to check out some of the world’s best skateparks too.

Ice swimming

sports that travel

Swimming in icy waters is nothing new, in fact, it has been enjoyed as a health activity in the Arctic Region and other parts of Northern Europe for hundreds of years. Its amazing health benefits, including improved immunity and better circulation, are now widely understood. An official ‘ice swim’ requires a one-mile swim, in water that is at least as cold as 41 °F , although any cold swim can have health benefits.

Where to go ice swimming? It’s easiest to find colder waters during winter but you can find year-round chilly waters in Finland, Norway, Sweden, Alaska, Canada, and parts of Ireland and the UK. If you head to any of these places in winter, you’ve also got a greater chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

Extreme downhill mountain biking

sports that travel

This adventurous sport is ideal for mountain bikers who are looking for a bigger challenge and a greater release of adrenaline. It involves using a specialized downhill mountain bike and cycling down tough, steep terrain. Courses generally feature huge jumps and deep drops. Although it’s not widely known in comparison to more headline-grabbing adrenaline sports, extreme mountain biking is actually one of the oldest on this extreme sports list.

Where to go extreme mountain biking? North America is one of the world’s best destinations for this sport. Many ski resorts become downhill bike courses during summer, such as the Winter Park in Colorado and Whistler Mountain Bike Park in BC, Canada. Top permanent downhill courses include Mountain Creek Bike Park in New Jersey and Mammoth Bike Park in California, which can be enjoyed any time of year.

sports that travel

Zip-lining is more than just a sport. Of all the activities on this extreme sports list, zip lines have the most practical real-life applications. They have been used to transport people, medical supplies, food, and even weapons across mountainous terrain for over 2000 years. It’s also one of the safest sports on this list. Whether you want to zip through a valley, gorge, canyon, perhaps through a forest, or between two mountaintops, this sport can be enjoyed all over the world.

Where to zip-line? It’s got to be Zip World Bethesda in North Wales, the longest zipline in Europe and the fastest in the world. A holiday to North Wales in the UK is also an opportunity to explore Snowdonia National Park. Alternatively, try out the world’s highest, La Tyrolienne, located in Val Thorens, which just happens to be one of the best ski regions in France.

Volcano boarding

sports that travel

Every bit as crazy as it sounds, volcano boarding, also known as volcano surfing, sees participants riding a flat board down the outer slopes of a volcano. The safe option is to board down a dormant or inactive volcano, but true adrenaline junkies opt for active volcanoes, which pose risks such as flying lava and poisonous gases.

Where to go volcano boarding? The world’s most famous spot is the Cerro Negro volcano in Nicaragua, but bear in mind that it is an active volcano.

Cave diving

sports that travel

The most extreme (and dangerous) way to scuba dive, cave diving enables you to go to places few humans will ever reach. This sport can only be enjoyed by those who are already experienced scuba divers , and it requires specialist additional knowledge, skills, and equipment.

Where to go cave diving? Australia is one of the world’s top destinations for this adventurous sport, thanks to a huge number of underwater caves and sinkholes. The Bahamas and The Dominican Republic are other popular spots. All of these destinations happen to be ideal for winter sun.

Bungee jumping

sports that travel

Arguably the ultimate of all adrenaline sports, and something that everyone should try at least once. It’s relatively safe, although you should always jump with established bungee providers. Participants are attached to a long, elasticated rope and quite literally jump from a high point.

Where to bungee?  In China, you can jump off the highest bungee jump in the world at Macau Tower , some 233 meters high. The historic Navajo Bridge that crosses the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon National Park is another spectacular option closer to home.

Wingsuit flying

sports that travel

Always fancied flying but never had the wings? Well, you can now with the advent of wingsuit flying. An extreme sport that really earns this title, in wingsuit flying, participants wear a suit that stretches out to form ‘wings’ between the legs and between the arms and body on each side.

This suit increases the surface area of the body and allows one to glide through the air. Participants reach an ideal glide ratio of 3:1, which means for every meter of falling, they glide forwards three. All wingsuits are fitted with a parachute for landing. If this isn’t quite exciting enough for you, you’ll be pleased to hear that jet-powered suits are in development.

Where to fly? Popular spots include Yosemite National Park and Lake Elsinore in California, Troll Wall in Norway, and for the experts only, ‘The Crack’ in the Swiss Hinterrugg.

Extreme ironing

sports that travel

A bit of a tongue-in-cheek adrenaline sport that has garnered a cult following, extreme ironing is exactly what it sounds like. The sport involves taking an ironing board, iron, and crumpled shirt to the most unusual and precarious places, despite not actually having an electricity supply.

Where to do extreme ironing? Anywhere extreme such as a mountaintop, under the water, or perhaps mid-ski. Wherever you do it, just be sure to stay safe and think before you iron.

sports that travel

Every single activity on this extreme sports list is risky, but highlining is potentially the most dangerous. Highlining is a form of tightrope walking, or slacklining, where the rope is suspended typically hundreds of meters high.

This may be between two very high trees, across two cliff edges or mountains, or perhaps over a dangerous body of water. Highlining can be perfectly safe when done with a harness, but some of the biggest names in the sport do it without any sort of protective equipment.

Where to do highlining? The city of Moab, Utah is a popular base for highliners looking to access the Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, as is LA, which offers easy access to the Joshua Tree National Park, where the sport is thought to have originated.

Tips for an extreme sports holiday

If you’re planning on taking a holiday specifically with adventurous sports in mind, make sure you are fully prepared. Only engage in sports that you already have experience in, and only do activities such as bungee jumping with experienced providers that have an excellent safety record and risk assessment. Whatever you do make sure you take out extreme sports travel insurance or check that your existing travel insurance offers cover for extreme sports.

Is there an extreme sport near me?

It might seem like extreme sports only take place in far-flung places, but you’d be surprised at how many activities you can do close to home.

Of course, not all adventures need to be extreme; there are many fantastic destinations that are ideal for taking an exciting active holiday, without jumping from a great height or visiting an active volcano. Remember to check current travel guidelines before you book a holiday packed with adventurous sports.

So what are you waiting for? Choose your sport and destination and book your extreme sports travel insurance. The world is waiting for you.

It was absolutely amazing. The trip was very well organized. The hotel was great and its location just wonderful. The tickets to the US Open were just perfect. The guidance and explanation, and assistance by Michael and Jessica were perfect. We just had the best of time.

Jan & Alison Hanshaft

Five Stars all the way! My wife and I had Wimbledon on our bucket list, planning to do this only once, but after the experience that MAC Sports Travel provided, we will be doing many more July trips to London. Michael, Jessica and his team provided any type of support, assistance or recommendations that you would need. The hotel is in the perfect location in Chelsea to get to the tournament, into the city or airport all by the tube system. Wonderful Breakfasts, nice clean rooms, great pubs and restaurants all within walking distance to hotel. Thank you for a wonderful trip. We are sorry it ended so soon. Jan and Alison

Charlie and Amy Thorne

2023 french open.

Amy and I had an absolutely fantastic experience with Michael and his team at Mac Sports Travel! We attended our first French Open and Mac made it a 5 Star experience for us with transport from and to CDG airport, wonderful hotel accommodations, excellent tickets at Roland Garros, special welcome and tasting event at a local restaurant AND a great tour of Paris. Having him and his team on site gave us an extra level of comfort and security knowing that they would be there to look after us. We’re looking forward to our next destination trip with them!

Pheobe Ashcraft

2023 laver cup, dulce goddard.

We just returned from our trip to Paris arranged by Mac Sports Travel. My sister and I are big Tennis fans and we love to see Rafael Nadal play in person maybe for the last time. We arranged a trip to Roland Garros from Miami and used Mac Sports Travel. We chose them because of the wonderful reviews we read about the company and they did not disappoint. Mac Sports was a joy to work with, very professional and knowledgeable from beginning to the end. We rate them10 out of 10, They took care of everything with ease, from airport transfers, to the choice of hotel, to the welcome dinner/ met with the team and our group, to the incredible seats we received which included hospitality suites at Roland Garros. They accommodated our request to see Moulin Rouge and was happy they even went with us to the dinner and show. The tour of Paris/cruise on the Seine is an icing on the cake. We really enjoyed this trip because of the Mac Sports team headed by Michael and his 3 angels: Jessica, Neil and Julia.. We felt special and safe throughout our stay, they definitely earned our business. We highly recommend Mac Sports and intend to use them again to go to Australia open in 2024.

The pros and cons of travel sports

Travel teams can be fulfilling and help you or your child develop. but is it worth the costs and effort.

sports that travel

By Alyssa Bradford

Travel sports can be great for children or youth to learn life lessons, exercise and make friendships. However, being a part of the team is also costly and time consuming.

So should you or your child play a travel sport? It depends on what you and your family are looking for. As a general suggestion, have a sincere discussion about expectations and what sacrifices the family will need to make.

For specific information and data for the pros and cons of travel sports, see below.

What is a travel sport?

A travel sports team features elite youth athletes who compete and travel extensively for games, competitions or tournaments. They are associated with private or club sport programs, distinct from recreational or school leagues, per Verywell Family .

There are multiple sports that offer travel teams to families and youth. Here are some of the most popular, according to Groundwork :

  • Basketball.
  • Field hockey.
  • Gymnastics.
  • Ice hockey.
  • Volleyball.
  • Water polo.

The pros of travel sports including improvement of skills, friendships, daily activity, life lessons and traveling.

Takes skills to next level

Travel sports offer higher-level competition, providing a pathway from recreational leagues to varsity teams. This can make it tempting for athletes wanting to get onto high school or college teams, per Rocky Top Sports World .

Builds friendships

The extensive time spent with teammates during practices, games and tournaments fosters friendships and create memories. This bond is particularly beneficial for reserved or shy children, helping them to feel belonging and grow in social skills, according to Rocky Top .

Daily activity

For those ages 5 to 17, 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activities should be completed throughout a day. This helps strengthen hearts, muscles and bones, per the World Health Organization .

According to The Everymom , travel sports allow for frequent activity and exercise for children and youth to stay healthy. Plus, it is usually more enjoyable than going to the gym.

Learning lessons

The Everymom also shares valuable lessons that one can learn from travel sports:

  • Perseverance.
  • Committing to promises.
  • Knowing how to work as a team.
  • Standing up for yourself.
  • Working on and succeeding in goals.

According to Rocky Top Sports World , athletes on travel teams get to explore new locations and compete against opponents from other regions, states and sometimes countries. Families often seize this opportunity to turn sports travel into a vacation by aligning it with tournaments or events.

Cons of travel sports include costs, time spent, burnout, risk of injury and possible conflict with religion.

Expensive costs

The costs of travel sports might change depending on what sport you play, the team and where you live.

Looking at the 15 most popular travel sports above, Groundwork also shares the average costs per spot on the team.

  • Baseball: $1,894.
  • Basketball: $822.
  • Cheer: $2,307.
  • Dance: $2,099.
  • Field hockey: $1,186.
  • Football: $349.
  • Gymnastics: $2,778.
  • Ice hockey: $2,529.
  • Lacrosse: $1,352.
  • Rugby: $281.
  • Soccer: $1,535.
  • Softball: $1,258.
  • Swimming: $1,325.
  • Volleyball: $3,159.
  • Water polo: $1,439.

According to Groundwork , these fees do not include travel, equipment, clothing and other expenses. “Parents can end up spending $10,000 annually for their child to participate at this level.”

It’s time consuming

Children’s sports activities can dominate schedules, with parents and children traveling extensively to attend games and tournaments, per Character Development and Leadership .

According to The Everymom , as a child, the author’s typical life while playing travel sports included three to five nights of long practices per week and two to three days for an away tournament almost every weekend.

As she grew older, the author found less time for hobbies or socializing with friends, as schoolwork demanded more of her free time, per The Everymom .

Burnout is possible

Burnout entails both mental and physical exhaustion, resulting in loss of interest in meaningful activities, according to Darling Downs Health .

With travel sports, burnout can be possible because of the constant time and energy dedicated.

Zipdo has important statistics related to burnout and sports:

  • Seventy percent of U.S. kids quit organized sports at age 13 due to burnout.
  • Boys are more likely to drop out (36%) than girls (31%) due to burnout.
  • Three out of four athletes have faced moderate to severe burnout.
  • U.S. youth athletes practicing over three consecutive hours are 125% more prone to burnout.
  • Over 45% of specialized youth athletes quit due to burnout.
  • Burnout in children playing travel sports surged by 50% in 2017.
  • Athletes training over 16 hours weekly with inadequate sleep face a 70% higher risk of burnout.

Greater risk of injury

According to Sadler Sports , more than 3.5 million youth sports injuries require medical treatment each year. Engaging in youth travel sports, as a lot of time is dedicated to the sport, can elevate the risk of overuse injuries.

Due to playing consistently, athletes can also sustain injuries that last throughout their lives, such as knee or head injuries, per The Everymom .

May conflict with religion

Depending on how you and your family worship, check to see if what is expected or required makes you feel comfortable. Here are some ways religion may conflict with sports, per Case IQ .

  • Required tournaments often play on Saturdays and Sundays. Question if one or both of those days are sacred.
  • Some religions might not be allowed to mix with the opposite gender. Besides teammates, travel sports include meeting with coaches and staff.
  • Is the sport uniform okay? Does it allow you to wear religious coverings? Is the uniform too revealing or does it showcase sponsors that you do not believe in?
  • Does the team or coach accommodate as necessary for religious practices, such as easier practice when fasting or a quiet area for religious observation?

Should you or your child play a travel sport?

According to Verywell Family , before committing to a team, have an open discussion with your family about the sacrifices involved and whether you are prepared to make them. Here are some general questions to ask, besides looking at the pros and cons above:

  • Are you familiar with the coach or coaches and do they offer the right environment for you or your child?
  • Are you or your child a good team player?
  • Are you or your child passionate and dedicated about the sport?
  • How much can the family financially spend? How much does the travel team cost?
  • How much time can you or your family give away? Can you or your children continue to complete school or family assignments?

If you, your child or your family feel comfortable with the answers given above, go for it! While people may continue to do travel sports throughout their youth, it does not mean someone can’t stop if wanted.

Want to get onto a travel sports team?

If the team requires tryouts, it can be scary for you or your child.

Before the tryouts look at some of these tips from the Thunder Soccer Club , perfect for all sports:

  • Think positively and be confident.
  • Put things in perspective. If you make the team, great; if not, that’s okay. What will you do for training next time if you don’t make it yet?
  • Meditate, pray, take deep breaths and do what is necessary to calm down.
  • Eat a light meal with carbohydrates before tryouts to get energy.
  • Drink plenty of water weeks before tryouts begin. Hydration will help in performance.
  • Get to the tryouts early.
  • Bring all of the equipment you need. Consider packing beforehand so you don’t forget.

New York City sports travel guide

Our city guides are meant to showcase the best of a metropolitan area from the perspective of a sports fan visiting New York City to watch their favorite teams in a game or two. Here’s our guide to the best of New York sports travel.

It’s hard for us to imagine why anyone with a travel itch would not want to visit New York City, with all that it has to offer, and that is especially true for the sports fan with a travel itch.

With nearly a dozen professional sports teams playing in the metro area and countless other sporting events taking place in the city over the course of the year, there’s something in New York for every type of fan on a sports travel vacation. And that’s before even discussing all the historical and cultural sights to see.

The vastness of New York’s sports scene (as well as the fact that leagues have offseasons, of course) means it’s impossible to see everything over the course of one weekend, or even one week. That’s OK, though, because it just gives you a good reason to come back.

Still, there are ways to accomplish most of your sightseeing and game-watching goals in a limited timeframe with just a little bit of planning. Read on for our travel guide on how to best enjoy a visit to New York when not watching its sports teams in action.

Where to watch sports in New York City

The obvious landing destination for most tourists is Manhattan, but if you’re in New York to watch one of the pro sports teams, it’s a little less straightforward than that.

Just one of New York’s pro sports venues lies within the most famous of the five boroughs. The rest are scattered among three of the other four boroughs, in the suburbs or in the next state over.

Particularly if you’re a first-time visitor to New York, you should find Manhattan to be the most convenient place to stay for ease of transportation, and it’s the starting point for just about every travel guide to the city.

However, if your trip centers around only one or two of the venues, you may also consider a different locale to be more convenient (more on that in “Where to stay” below).

The newest pro venue opened in the fall of 2021, as the Islanders moved into UBS Arena. It’s located just east of the city proper and next to the Belmont Park race track. The Isles’ old home, the Nassau Coliseum , is still standing and serves as the home of the Long Island Nets of the NBA G League.

Primary sports venues in the NYC area

• Barclays Center : Home of the Nets. Located at 620 Atlantic Ave. near Flatbush Ave. in Brooklyn.

• Citi Field : Home of the Mets. Located at 41 Seaver Way in Flushing, Queens.

• Madison Square Garden : Home of the Knicks, Rangers and WNBA’s Liberty. Located at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza in Manhattan, above Penn Station.

• MetLife Stadium : Home of the Giants and Jets. Located at 1 MetLife Stadium Drive in East Rutherford, N.J.

• Prudential Center : Home of the Devils. Located at 25 Lafayette Street in downtown Newark, N.J.

• Red Bull Arena : Home of the Red Bulls. Located at 600 Cape May Street in Harrison, N.J.

• UBS Arena : Home of the Islanders. Located at 2150 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, N.Y.

• Yankee Stadium : Home of the Yankees and New York City FC. Located at 1 East 161st Street in the Bronx.

Arriving and getting around New York City

New York City has three major airports in its metro area, and which one you choose to fly into has different advantages and disadvantages depending on which airline you use, where you’re coming from and where you plan to go once you’ve arrived.

• John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) : Located in southern Queens, it serves as a hub for American, Delta and JetBlue. It is the busiest airport in the region and the primary airport for international flights to and from New York. Taxi fare to Manhattan is $52 flat before tolls and tips ; an “air train” line connects the airport to the subway and Long Island Rail Road.

•  LaGuardia Airport (LGA) : Located in northern Queens, not far from Citi Field, and a hub for Delta. The least trafficked of the three local airports, LaGuardia services mostly shorter flights. Taxi fare to Manhattan starts at about $32 before tolls and tips; bus lines connect the airport to the subway and Long Island Rail Road.

•  Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) : A few miles south of downtown Newark, it is a hub for United Airlines, which services most of the airport’s international destinations. It is connected to New Jersey Transit via an “air train” and a dedicated station on the Northeast Corridor line that leads to Manhattan. Taxi fare to Manhattan starts at $50 before tolls and tips.

Traveling long distances by train is an afterthought for most of the country, but not in the Eastern Seaboard. New York’s Penn Station is an Amtrak hub and can be reached in reasonable time (6 hours or less) from as far north as Boston and as far south as Washington, D.C.

Seven blocks from Penn Station on Eighth Avenue is the Port Authority Bus Terminal , which serves regional bus lines as well as long-haul services such as Greyhound.

Where to stay

Duh! Midtown Manhattan, right? Well, that’s certainly a wonderful starting point, hotels are most definitely plentiful, and subway and rail makes it accessible to every sports venue.

But the hotel rates are also the most expensive in the city — standard rates approach $300 a night for most brand-name hotels. There are hotels all throughout the city, so if your budget needs a break and your trip doesn’t call for you to be in Manhattan most of the time, consider staying in one of the other fine boroughs.

If you think off the beaten path is more for you, here are some options: Brooklyn, particularly in the trendy Williamsburg neighborhood (near Barclays Center and easier access to Citi Field); downtown Newark (near the Prudential Center and convenient to MetLife Stadium and Madison Square Garden via NJ Transit); and near JFK and LaGuardia airports (convenient to Citi Field and Long Island, especially if you have a car).

Getting around

Unless you are staying in an outlying suburb, or have a need to go far outside the city during your trip, don’t even think about renting a car.

Trust us on this one. If you are in New York just to see your favorite sports team play and to check off a few sights from the travel guide, you won’t need it.

Every venue listed above is accessible by public transportation — in most cases, we mean the subway, and the rest can be reached by rail — so save yourself the added stress of fighting traffic and paying for parking.

Here’s a quick rundown on subway/rail accessibility for each venue:

• Barclays Center: Accessible via the Atlantic Av/Barclays Center station on the B, Q, 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains. Long Island Rail Road’s Atlantic Terminal stands across the street from the arena.

• Citi Field: Accessible via the Mets/Willets Point station on the 7 train, which leads to Manhattan. Long Island Rail Road also serves the station.

• Madison Square Garden: Penn Station, underneath the arena, is on lines A, C, E, 1, 2, and 3 of the subway system; is the terminus of NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor line and is a major hub for Amtrak routes throughout the northeast.

• MetLife Stadium: The Meadowlands train station, just outside the stadium, is active during events only. Trains run to NJ Transit’s Secaucus Junction station, between Penn Station and downtown Newark’s station, also called Penn Station (confusing, yes, but it shouldn’t be difficult to tell the difference between the two).

• Prudential Center: Accessible via Newark Penn Station (two blocks away) on Amtrak or NJ Transit. The arena will be visible to the west as your train pulls into the station.

• Red Bull Arena: Accessible via PATH , a commuter rail service. From Newark Penn Station, take a PATH train to Harrison. The venue is three blocks from the station.

• UBS Arena: Use the Hempstead Branch of the Long Island Rail Road to reach the arena from Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens. A new Belmont station is currently being constructed.

• Yankee Stadium: Accessible via the 161st St/Yankee Stadium station on the B, D and 4 trains.

Taxis, of course, are always an option in New York, as are rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, and they can get you to any of the venues if you’re willing to pay more than standard subway or rail fares.

Gameday parking

Of all the venues, only Citi Field, MetLife Stadium and Red Bull Arena have large swaths of parking lots in the immediate surrounding area. With the rest, you’ll more than likely be taking your chances with independent parking operators.

The standard rules apply: Know that the lesser the cost, the farther away you probably are, and buyer beware when it comes to each individual lot, where they make you park your car, and how secure the lot is while you’re off at the game.

Things to see and do in New York City

You don’t need us to tell you that New York is gigantic, and there’s much more to do than anyone could possibly cram into a 3-4 day trip, let alone someone who’s looking for a good way to spend their free time during their travels when not watching the sports teams.

This guide of suggestions is tailored toward the first-time visitor to New York City, so if these don’t strike your fancy, or they’re all on your been-there-done-that travel list, there are hundreds of other fine forms of sightseeing and entertainment before the games.

Sightsee, of course

Just a few of the many options include heading up to the observation deck of the Empire State Building , looking up at all the lights of Times Square , boarding a ferry to the Statue of Liberty , paying your respects at the National 9/11 Memorial , taking a stroll through Central Park , watching skaters at Rockefeller Center  … and on and on and on.

And save time for NYC’s many museums. Some are prominent, such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (aka “The Met”), the Guggenheim Museum and the American Museum of Natural History . Others are lesser-known, like the Museum of the Moving Image , the Tenement Museum and the New York Transit Museum .

If you’d like to hit a lot of attractions, consider a CityPass , a tourist coupon book that offers discounted admission to a number of popular sights. It also helps tremendously to prioritize which attractions you’re most interested in seeing during your New York travels and use it as a guide for your daily itineraries.

Got a free night? Spend it taking in a show on Broadway , or see a taping of “ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ,” or head to a concert at Carnegie Hall , the Lincoln Center  or Radio City Music Hall . And those are just the options in midtown Manhattan, as New York lives up to its reputation as a cultural mecca.

For discounted or last-minute Broadway tickets, head to the TKTS booth in the middle of Times Square (though lines there tend to be on the long side).

Times Square New York City

Times Square

Eat the best of NYC

Again, the possibilities are endless, but you could do a lot better than the tourist traps and chains that surround Times Square.

Though travel guides to New York could list hundreds of restaurants worth visiting, here we’re naming just a few options that could easily fit into a 3- or 4-day trip to watch the sports teams — and some of them can also be found inside the stadiums:

• Jing Fong (202 Centre Street): One of the most popular restaurants in New York’s Chinatown is at its busiest during dim sum service, with hundreds of diners jostling for the attention of the numerous cart-pushers in the restaurant’s huge dining room.

• Katz’s Delicatessen (205 Houston Street in lower Manhattan): Perhaps the most well-known of New York’s many delis and the site of several famous movie and television scenes .

• L&B Spumoni Gardens (2725 86th Street, Brooklyn): Unique among New York pizzerias because it serves a Sicilian square pie, it’s a favorite among Brooklynites. Save room for the spumoni, a frozen Italian treat.

• Leo’s Latticini aka Mama’s of Corona (46-02 104th Street, Corona, Queens): One of the most popular delis in the predominantly Italian neighborhood southwest of Citi Field.

• Lombardi’s (32 Spring Street, lower Manhattan): Considered the birthplace of New York-style pizza and the first pizzeria in operation in the United States, it has been going since 1905.

• Minetta Tavern (113 MacDougal Street, Greenwich Village, Manhattan): This upscale tavern is known for its “Black Label Burger,” which comes with a $33 price tag but is widely considered to be the best burger in New York.

• Nathan’s Famous (1310 Surf Ave., Brooklyn): The famous Coney Island hot dog stand has a nationwide presence, but why not check out the original? It draws a crowd on July 4, when the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is held.

• Peter Luger (178 Broadway, Brooklyn): Yes, it’s a prime steakhouse in New York, so it won’t be cheap — and on top of that, they don’t accept credit cards. But they’ve been popular for more than a century — and have made countless appearances on travel programs — for a reason.

• Russ & Daughters Cafe (127 Orchard Street, lower Manhattan): Between its bagels with smoked salmon and lox and its egg creams, the cafe — an offshoot of their century-old “appetizing store” — is a great place to sample Jewish classics.

• Shake Shack (Madison Square Park, Manhattan): It’s a nationwide chain now, of course, but if you’re a fan, might as well learn of Shake Shack’s origins. The kiosk in Madison Square Park is a step up from the original hot dog cart that began operating in the summer of 2001.

• Sylvia’s Restaurant (328 Malcolm X Boulevard, Harlem, Manhattan): Famous for its fried chicken and one of the most well-known purveyors of soul food in Harlem.

More sports

Though college teams usually get short shrift in New York’s vast sports scene, there are options for your sports travel vacation.

The most prominent program in the area is Rutgers, whose campus is about half an hour away in New Brunswick, N.J. (accessible from Penn Station on NJ Transit). The Big East basketball tournament remains an annual tradition at Madison Square Garden despite recent conference realignment changing which teams regularly appear there.

The USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, next to Citi Field, hosts the U.S. Open every August/September. The complex is also serviced by the Mets/Willets Point station on the 7 train and Long Island Rail Road.

In early June, the New York area hosts the third and final jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes. The event takes place at Belmont Park , located next door to UBS Arena, though extensive renovations to the facility will force the Belmont Stakes to move to Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York in 2024.

Dave Portnoy has declared himself the “hottest gamblers on the planet” after another big win thanks to Scottie Scheffler’s triumph at The Masters .

The Barstool Sports founder is on a $5.4 million winning streak full of massive bets on some of 2024’s biggest sporting events.

“Guys I don’t think people realize what we are witnessing,” Portnoy wrote on X. “To come into #themasters as the world’s #1 and the hottest gambler on the planet. To have a bullseye on your forehead and still win with ease? We may never see a 4 month stretch like this again.    #eprestheallknowing”

Portnoy won $1.35 million after placing a $300,000 bet on Scheffler to win the Green Jacket at +450 odds.

His big win at The Masters came less than a week after winning $2.1 million off of UConn’s national championship title, bringing his total winnings for the week to $3.45 million.

Portnoy’s unbelievable week comes just a couple of months after a lucrative college football playoff and Super Bowl.

On New Year’s Day, Portnoy won $1 million when the Michigan Wolverines beat the Alabama Crimson Tide to make the national championship game. Later that night, he won another half-million dollars when the Washington Huskies upset the Texas Longhorns to set up a date with Michigan.

Barstool founder and CEO Dave Portnoy is seen before the Florida Atlantic Owls and Loyola (Il) Ramblers game in the Barstool Invitational at Wintrust Arena on November 8, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois.

“Listen I’ve had a pretty good run for the past 2 decades,” Portnoy wrote in a blog post at Barstool Sports in January. “I’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars. Boston sports teams have won like 9,000 titles.  Everything has seemingly bounced my way. But my god 2024 is setting up for maybe my best year yet. We’re not even 48 hours into the new year and Michigan has already won the Rose Bowl.”

A month later, Portnoy won another half-million bucks when the Chiefs beat the 49ers in the Super Bowl.

“It’s really simple. Always bet on Mahomes,” Portnoy said in post on X.

WNBA expansion to 16 teams possible by 2028, will pay for playoffs and back-to-back flights

There are more back-to-back sets this season with the wnba taking a long break for the olympics in late july and early august., by doug feinberg | the associated press • published april 16, 2024 • updated on april 16, 2024 at 12:11 am.

The WNBA will once again pay for charter flights for the entire playoffs as well as for back-to-back games during the upcoming season that require air travel, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said Monday.

There are more back-to-back sets this season with the WNBA taking a long break for the Olympics in late July and early August. The league spent $4 million on charters in 2023 and will do the same this year.

“No one wants (charters) more than I do for these players. We need to be in the right financial position,” Engelbert said before the WNBA draft Monday night. “Just a few years ago we were surviving, now we're going from survive to thrive. We want to do it at the appropriate time.”

Engelbert also said she hopes to have 16 teams in the league by 2028, up from the current 12. The WNBA is adding a team next year, when a Golden State franchise in San Francisco will join the league. Other cities or metropolitan areas that Engelbert said are in the running include Philadelphia; Toronto; Portland, Oregon; Denver; Nashville; and South Florida.

“Our plan and goal is to get to 16 teams in the next few years,” she said.

Engelbert said she got calls last week from two other cities the league hadn't been talking to.

Golden State will get a chance to built its roster through an expansion draft.

“It will happen before the college draft and we'll share more details when we get closer to that,” Engelbert said. “Talking to general managers and coaches and teams and owners, there will be an expansion draft this year and it will probably be in December.”

Engelbert knows this year's draft has more household names like Caitlin Clark , who helped the NCAA reach its best viewership in history for women's basketball , with nearly 19 million fans watching the title game. Blake Griffin announces retirement: Six-time All-Star was of NBA's top dunkers, biggest names

sports that travel

Veteran NBA forward Blake Griffin announced his retirement from professional basketball Tuesday.

“I never envisioned myself as the guy who would have a ‘letter to basketball’ retirement announcement … and I’m still not going to be that guy,” Griffin posted on Instagram . “But as I reflected on my career, the one feeling I kept coming back to and the thing I wanted to express was thankfulness.

“I’m thankful for every single moment – not just the good ones: the wins, the awards, the dunks and the memorable time spent with family, friends, fans, teammates, and coaches.”

Griffin also acknowledged his parents, Tommy and Gail, and his brother, Taylor "for their unconditional support and guidance."

Griffin spent 13 seasons in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers, Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics. He averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists and shot 49.3% from the field. He was a six-time All-Star, five-time All-NBA selection and 2010-11 Rookie of the Year. His final season was in 2022-23 with Boston.

A star at Oklahoma, Griffin was the 2008-09 college player of the year, averaging 22.7 points and 14.4 rebounds, and left for the NBA after two seasons with the Sooners. He was the No. 1 overall pick by the Clippers in the 2009 draft but missed the 2009-10 season with a knee injury.

Injuries were a significant part of Griffin’s career. He had five seasons with fewer than 35 games played, and Griffin gave a nod in that direction. “I am equally thankful for the not-so-good moments: the losses, the injuries, the wayyyy too many surgeries, the lessons, the heartbreaks, and it wouldn’t be (a) sports retirement letter without acknowledging the ‘haters.’ ”

In his prime, Griffin was among the league’s best power forwards. He averaged a double-double in points and rebounds twice in his career, including 22.5 points and 12.1 rebounds in 2010-11 and posted a career-high 24.5 points per game with the Pistons in 2018-19.

He was also a powerful and emphatic dunker – both in games and in the dunk contest. He won the event in 2011, jumping over the hood of a car while catching an alley-oop pass from Baron Davis who was poking through the sunroof of the car.
