Kalhana, the author of Rajatarangini, a historical chronicle of early India penned in 1148, has written that it was emperor Ashoka (3rd century BC) who founded the city of Srinagari, which may have been situated a little away from the current city of Srinagar.

However, King Pravarasena II of the Vakataka dynasty (400-415 BC) is credited as the founder of present-day Srinagar. Akbar was the first Mughal emperor to capture the Kashmir Valley and he built some of the most well-planned gardens and mosques in Srinagar. The city's beauty was enhanced during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. In winter, Srinagar takes on a white glow, covered in soft snow. And in summer, as the snow melts, and the flowers in the meadows bloom, the city resembles an artist's canvas.

It is among Kashmir’s least explored and most picturesque tourist destinations close to Srinagar. For those who love the outdoors, this magnificent location is sure a picturesque sight. There is nothing more fascinating you could find in the city than the lush peaks and rushing river streams cutting through the impenetrable woodlands. The apple and walnut trees of Chatpal are well renowned. Tourists visiting Chatpal usually indulge in nature walks across the valleys and interact with locals for a peek into their lifestyle and culture.

Dachigam National Park – Get Close With The Wild

The ten hamlets spread over its expansive 141 sq. km. region are referred to as Dachigam. Dachigam National Park, located approximately 22 km from the main town of Srinagar, is the ideal stopover for wildlife safaris that have been preserved in Kashmir Valley. Dachigam, one of the most significant tourist destinations in Srinagar is well-known for being the home to numerous plant and animal species, including the Kashmiri Stag and the Himalayan Black Bear. Nokrek National Park and Karnala Bird Sanctuary are popular tourist destinations close to Dachigam National Park. The Sangargulu Valley, which forms the upper realm of the park, is embellished by the Dagwan River, which flows through it. The Dachigam National Park’s Sangargulu Valley, also known as Valley of Flowers, is a great place to go hiking if you want to see leopards and koklass pheasants.

Aru Valley – Hub For Adventure Seekers

One of the top tourist destinations in Srinagar is the Aru Valley, located in the Anantnag district around 100 kilometers from the capital. The lovely meadows, serene atmosphere, and gorgeous surroundings make it a hit among all. With a distance of 12 kilometers, Pahalgam is the closest town to Aru Valley. The Valley is the ideal location for thrill seekers and serves as the starting point for the Sonamarg Trek and Kolahoi Glacier. Another great location for hiking is Lidderwat, which is about 8 kilometers away from Aru Valley. The valley turns into a great skiing destination during the winter season. It is also popular for other thrilling activities like hiking, biking, camping, fishing, horse riding, and trekking. The Aru Valley’s snow-capped peaks, incredible beauty, and exciting adventure activities make it one of the most exquisite places to visit in Srinagar.

Shalimar Bagh – Honeymooners Paradise

Shalimar Bagh, a garden created by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his queen Nur Jahan, has long been a popular honeymoon location. Shalimar Bagh which was constructed in 1619 is the largest of all the Mughal gardens in Srinagar, and it showcases the Islamic garden design known as Persian gardens. It used to serve as their summer house and Royal Court. The Bagh has three terraced portions that were used for various purposes in the past. The emperor’s residence was in the center, or “Diwan-i-Khas,” while the women of the royal family were in the uppermost section. The garden’s perimeter, known as Diwan-i-Aam, was accessible to the general population. The Chini Khanas, which are positioned behind the waterfalls and embellished with flowers to create a spectacular visual impact, are the garden’s main attractions. No doubt it is one of the best places to visit in Srinagar for honeymooners. 

Nishat Bagh – The Garden Of Bliss

The 12-terraced garden known as Nishat Bagh is located close to Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake. The breathtaking vista of the Dal Lake is set against the Zabarwan Mountains. It is the greatest Mughal garden in Kashmir after Shalimar Bagh. Also known as the “Garden of Bliss”, it is a stunning Mughal water channel with numerous fountains and tall Chinar trees on either side which is mesmerizing. Nishat Bagh was designed and built around 1633 by Noor Jahan’s elder brother, Asif Khan. Nishat Bagh’s design was inspired by Persian gardens, but the geography and water elements of Kashmir Valley were employed for the landscaping. A stream of still water divides the garden into two sections, and each level is identified by a tall embankment that is home to a distinctive collection of vibrant blooms. The garden is so beautiful that it’s a paradise for photographers and nature lovers. 

Nigeen Lake – The Jewel In The Ring

Nigeen Lake in Srinagar is well known for its shikara rides, houseboat stays, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking surroundings. The term nageena, which means “the jewel in the ring” gives the lake its name. The picturesque romantic setting makes it one of the best spots in the city to watch the sunrise and sunset. For tourists who want a quiet place to take in the breathtaking views of the nearby mountains, Nigeen Lake is the place. The several houseboats that accommodate visitors and shikaras that transport tourists within the region are a total hit among all. Do not miss the houseboat and Shkara rides as it will be one of the best experiences in Srinagar. Located on the eastern coast of the lake is the Nigeen Club which offers amenities like saunas, gyms, and a coffee shop where you can sit back and enjoy the marvelous beauty of snow-clad mountains.

Doodhpathri – The Valley Of Milk

Doodhpathri, a charming hidden treasure of Kashmir is one of the most important attractions to see in Srinagar. It is a lush green meadow with the Pir Panzal range surrounding it and the Shaliganga River running through it. The renowned Kashmiri saint Sheikh ul Aalam Sheikh Noor din Noorani is reported to have worshiped here. Once, when looking for water in the meadows to offer prayers, he punctured the earth with his stick in an attempt to find water but milk spilled out. Hence the name Doodhpathri which means ‘Valley of Milk’. Though Doodhpathri is located at an altitude of 8,957 feet, it is great to visit this place, both during the summer and winter. During spring and summer, the whole valley is covered in green meadows and flowers. During winter, the lakes and waterfalls get entirely frozen due to the below-freezing temperatures. Truly a sight worth capturing. 

Shankaracharya Temple – Oldest Shrine In Kashmir

The Lord Shiva-dedicated Shankaracharya Temple, which is located atop the Shankaracharya Hill is one of the oldest temples and best places to visit in Srinagar. The temple, placed on a high octagonal platform resting on solid rock, can be reached by a flight of about 243 steps. The well-known philosopher Shankaracharya, who is said to have visited Srinagar some ten centuries ago, is honored by having his name attached to the temple, which is also known as Jyesteshwara Temple. The Shiva Linga, which he venerated and is believed to have reached spiritual enlightenment, is housed in the temple. He is credited with founding the four Hindu schools of Advaita, or the non-dualist philosophy. From the top of the temple, one can have a beautiful view of the valley. Generally pilgrims on their way to Amarnath Yatra, stop at the Shankaracharya Temple to seek blessings.

Lal Chowk – A Bustling Marketplace

Lal Chowk, which translates to “Red Square,” was named after the renowned Red Square in Moscow, Russia. Left-wing activists came up with the term. It is situated in the city’s core and over its history, Srinagar has seen a number of significant historical events. This square has seen many political and social movements, protests, rallies, and celebrations. Lal Chowk’s strategic and historical significance have been well-documented in Indian history texts. The renowned Ghanta Ghar – Clock Tower, which was constructed in 1980 is housed here. Lal Chowk is also a well-known location to shop. Here’s where you may buy real jewelry, decorations, wedding supplies, and cutlery. It is one of Srinagar’s busiest and most well-liked shopping destinations. You can also get lovely Kashmiri paintings and ethnic clothing with elaborate needlework, wonderful pashmina shawls, and pathani outfits. A visit to Lal Chowk is sure to give a memorable experience.

Dastgeer Sahib – An Old Sufi Shrine

Dastgeer Sahib, a 200-year-old Sufi shrine, is regarded as one of the oldest spiritual destinations and places to visit in Srinagar. The shrine was allegedly built by the philanthropist Mir Husain Qadri in 1845, contrary to popular perception. The unusual elements of this shrine scarcely had any counterparts. It was encircled by internal walls decorated with papier mache finish and covered with a typical Khatamband ceiling with numerous crystal chandeliers. A hideous fire event that happened in the year 2012 seriously devastated Dastgeer Sahib. The shrine has been restored to its former glory and now houses beautiful artifacts that belonged to Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jelani. The shrine which is an architectural marvel is thought to contain five burials, including one of the famed Sufi saints. Additionally, a mosque and a busy market are both close by and a must-to-do thing in Srinagar.

Pari Mahal – Traditional Islamic Style Palace

Pari Mahal , also known as The Angels’ Abode lies south-west of Dal Lake and is perched atop the Zabarwan mountain range overlooking Srinagar. Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor immensely supported art and architecture during his rule and the building shows this. The six well-kept terraced gardens are the reason why Pari Mahal came to be known as the house of fairies. Due to the intriguing history behind it, this palace which was constructed in the traditional Islamic style became the most important historical structure. Due to the stunning vistas and gorgeous plants, this location also draws a lot of wildlife enthusiasts. The palace is definitely a sight to behold, especially with these captivating grounds. It was initially a monastery for the Buddhists and later went on to be an astrology school for Emperor Shah Jahan’s son, Dara Shikoh.

Amarnath Cave – Pilgrim Site

Coming all the way to Srinagar and going back without visiting the well-known shrine might be a big disappointment for many. So if you are planning to see Srinagar during the summer months, then a visit to Amarnath shrine is a must. The Hindu shrine Amarnath Cave which is 3,888 meters above sea level receives thousands of visitors each year. During the summer months when the cave is open, tens of thousands of devotees travel there to reach the ice stalagmite that has developed inside. To get here, one must navigate treacherous mountainous terrain. The Lord Shiva-themed shrine which is over 5000 years old occupies a significant position in Hindu mythology. It has an ice stalagmite inside that waxes from May to August and has the appearance of Lord Shiva. Definitely one of the top places to visit in Srinagar!

Awantipora – Ancient Ruin Temple

Awantipora, one of the main tourist destinations in Srinagar , is only 30 km away and should not be missed! The area is well-known for being the former capital city of Awantipora in antiquity. The ancient town that was established by King Avantivarman was also known as Viswasara. The shrine to Lord Vishnu is housed in a modest yet elaborate temple. After the earthquake’s devastation and the clearing of the debris, the temple was once again its own. Ancient rustic remains from Awantipora are well-known. The impressive architecture and artwork from earlier times are also on display amid the ruins. It is a well-known historical location in Awantipora and one of the top tourist destinations in Srinagar. Anantnag, Padgampora, and Martand Sun Temple are other well-known tourist destinations to check out from Awantipora. 

Enjoying a Shikara ride, staying in a houseboat, rafting at Sonmarg, Skiing at Gulmarg, Paragliding above the Valleys and tasting delicious local cuisine are some of the must-do activities while in Srinagar.

Be it summer, winter, or autumn, beautiful Srinagar will never fail to amaze you. The autumn months between August and October are the best time to visit as during this time weather is not too cold and is perfect for sightseeing. It’s best to avoid the summer months between March to June as it can get really hot. If you enjoy the cold weather, then the best time to travel is between November to March.

Taking into account all the parameters of safety, Srinagar is as safe as any other city in India. The huge rush of tourists during the last few years clearly shows that this place is safe not just for people traveling with family and friends but also for solo women travelers.

Places to Visit in Srinagar

Srinagar is a haven for tourists with beautiful gardens, historical forts, and culturally significant religious sites. Here is a list of my top picks of the places to visit in Srinagar:

Mughal Gardens

Srinagar is home to four Mughal gardens, which are Shalimar Bagh, Nishat garden, Chashma Shahi, and Pari Mahal. These gardens not only offer a glimpse into India’s rich history and culture but also provide a peaceful and serene environment for you to relax and unwind. Each garden is unique in its own way, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains, lakes, and gardens. You can find a glimpse of each garden as you scroll down.

Here are some general information about the Mughal gardens in Srinagar that will help you plan your trip:

• The gardens are open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.
• Entry fee per adult is Rs. 24 and for children is Rs. 12.
• The best times to visit the Mughal gardens in Srinagar are in April and in November. In April, the plants and shrubs are in full bloom, while in November, autumn paints the leaves of the large chinar trees brilliant shades of yellow and orange.
• You can take photos in Kashmiri attire in all of the Mughal gardens.

Shalimar Garden

Shalimar Garden is one of the most beautiful, and iconic Mughal gardens in Srinagar . The garden is located on the banks of Dal Lake and was built by Emperor Jahangir in 1619 for his beloved wife Nur Jahan. The garden is spread over 31 acres and is divided into three terraces, each with a unique theme and design.

One of the most unique features of Shalimar Garden is its water supply system. The garden is irrigated by a canal that runs through the center of the garden. The water flows through the canal and cascades down into the fountains and pools, creating a soothing and tranquil atmosphere.

Nishat Garden

Nishat Garden, also known as the “ Garden of Joy ,” is one of the most beautiful Mughal gardens in Srinagar. It is located on the banks of the Dal Lake and was built by Asif Khan, the brother-in-law of Emperor Jahangir, in 1633. The garden is spread over 47 acres and is known for its stunning landscapes, beautiful flowerbeds, and serene atmosphere.

Chashma Shahi

Chashma Shahi is a beautiful Mughal Garden located on the foothills of the Zabarwan Mountains in Srinagar. It was built in 1632 by Ali Mardan Khan, a Mughal governor of Kashmir during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. The garden is known for its natural spring, which is believed to have medicinal properties and is a major tourist attraction in Srinagar.

Chashma Shahi is one of the smallest Mughal gardens in Srinagar , but it is also one of the most serene and peaceful. The garden is spread over 1.5 acres and is divided into three terraces, each with a unique theme and design.

Ashley’s Tip: Carry an empty bottle with you when visiting Chashma Shahi to fill in some water to drink from the natural spring in Chashma Shahi. It is said that the water here has healing properties.

Pari Mahal, which means the “Fairy Palace”, is a beautiful historical monument with gardens around it, in the typical Mugal style.

The Pari Mahal was built by Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in the 17th century. The primary purpose behind the construction of Pari Mahal was to serve as an observatory and a residence for Dara Shikoh.

Prince Dara Shikoh had a deep interest in astrology, Sufism, and various philosophical pursuits. Pari Mahal was designed to be a place where he could study astronomy and astrology. The location on the Zabarwan Range provided an elevated position with clear views of the sky, facilitating celestial observations.

Pari Mahal is also known for its unique blend of Islamic and Buddhist architecture. The palace has several arched doorways and windows, which are adorned with intricate carvings and designs. The palace also has several water fountains, which add to the beauty of the place.

Ashley’s Tip: If you are visiting Srinagar as part of a tour package, you are unlikely to have Pari Mahal on your itinerary. However, know that it is just 2.5 kilometers from Chashma Shahi and so you can demand your operator to take you anyhow. Trust me, it is worth your time!

Badamwari, also known as the Almond Garden , is a beautiful garden located in the heart of Srinagar. The garden is known for its stunning almond trees, which bloom during the spring season. I visited most of the gardens in Srinagar and in my opinion, Badamwari is the most beautiful garden in Srinagar.

The Badamwari was built by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the 17th century and was originally used as a hunting ground for the royal family. The garden is spread over 37 acres of land and has over 2000 almond trees, which bloom in shades of pink and white during the spring season.

Ashley’s Tip: Badamwari is open only for a limited time of the year from late March to early May or only when the almond flowers are in bloom. Check the dates before planning your trip here.

Tulip Garden

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, also known as the Tulip Garden , is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist attractions in Srinagar. It is located at the foothills of the Zabarwan Mountains and is spread over 30 hectares (74 acres) of land.

The garden is known for its stunning tulip flowers, which bloom in various colors during the spring season.

The Tulip Garden was inaugurated in 2007 and is the largest tulip garden in Asia . The garden was built to promote tourism in the region and to showcase the beauty of Kashmiri flowers. Tulip garden is open to the public in April every year, which is the prime blooming season for the tulips.

The garden is divided into several sections, each with a unique color scheme and design. The tulips are planted in different patterns and designs, giving you a mesmerizing sight. The garden has over 1.5 million tulips of different colors, including red, yellow, orange, pink, and white.

Hari Parbat

Hari Parbat is a hill located in the city of Srinagar. It is an important historical and cultural landmark in the city and is a must-visit place for anyone interested in the history and culture of Kashmir. The hill is home to an ancient temple, a Gurudwara and other structures, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Dal Lake.

The first fortification of Hari Parbat was started by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1590. He built an outer wall for the fort and a grand gate, called Kathi Darwaza. However, he could never complete the construction of a fort on Hari Parbat.

The construction of the Hari Parbat Fort, also known as Durrani Fort , took place in the 18th century under the rule of Atta Mohammad Khan, an Afghan governor. The fort is a testament to the historical military architecture of the time and has played a role in various periods of conflict and political changes in the region.

Apart from the historical and cultural significance of the hill, it is also a great place to enjoy nature and the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Dal Lake. There are several walking trails and picnic spots on the hill, which are popular with locals and tourists alike.

Ashley’s Tip: There will be a lot of walking involved. Carry enough water and wear sun protection.

Hazratbal Shrine

Hazratbal Shrine is one of the most famous religious landmarks in Srinagar. It is a revered shrine for Muslims and is known for its historical and religious significance. The shrine is located on the banks of the Dal Lake and is a popular tourist attraction.

The shrine is home to a relic that is believed to be a hair from the beard of the Prophet Muhammad. The relic is displayed to the public on certain special occasions, and it is said to have miraculous powers. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful architecture, which combines traditional Islamic and Kashmiri styles.

Jamia Masjid

Jamia Masjid is a historic mosque located in the heart of Srinagar. The mosque is a stunning example of Islamic architecture and is one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. Jamia masjid has a rich history and is an important religious and cultural center for Muslims in the region.

The mosque was built in 1394 CE by Sultan Sikandar Shah, the ruler of Kashmir at the time. The mosque has a spacious courtyard that can accommodate thousands of worshippers at a time. Apart from that, Jamia masjid is a great place for you to shop for clothes and footwear at cheap prices. The mosque is surrounded by a line of shops that sell clothing, footwear, and trinkets of reasonable quality.

Shankaracharya Temple

Shankaracharya Temple is a revered Hindu shrine located on the top of a hill in Srinagar. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the oldest and most important religious landmarks in the region.

Shankaracharya temple is named after the great philosopher and theologian Shankaracharya , who is believed to have visited the site during the 9th century CE. The temple has a rich history and is known for its stunning architecture and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

To reach the temple, you have to climb a steep flight of stairs that lead up to the top of the hill. The climb can be challenging, but the stunning views and the peaceful surroundings make it all worth it. The temple is located at an altitude of 1100 feet above sea level and offers breathtaking views of Dal Lake and the surrounding mountains.

The architecture of the temple is a blend of traditional Kashmiri and Hindu styles. The temple has a circular base and a tall octagonal structure with a dome-shaped roof. The interior of the temple is decorated with beautiful carvings and intricate artwork, which adds to the charm and beauty of the shrine.

Ashley’s Tip: The road to Shankaracharya Temple is closed after 5:00 pm, so plan your trip accordingly.

Shikara Ride on Dal Lake

Shikara ride on Dal Lake is one of the most popular and enjoyable activities for tourists visiting Srinagar. The Dal Lake is a stunningly beautiful lake that is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and lush greenery. The Shikara ride offers you a unique opportunity to explore the lake and experience the culture and beauty of Srinagar.

Shikaras are traditional Kashmiri boats that are brightly colored and decorated. The boats are operated by local boatmen who are skilled in navigating the lake and know all the best spots to explore. The Shikara ride is a leisurely and relaxing experience that allows you to take in the breathtaking views of the lake and its surroundings.

During the Shikara ride, your guide will show you the main viewpoints on the way, including the beautiful Char Chinar Island, which is home to four majestic Chinar trees . You can also visit the floating vegetable gardens and observe the local fishermen at work.

The Shikara ride is also a great way to experience the unique culture and traditions of Kashmir. While you are floating away slowly on Dal Lake, hawkers will row beside you with souvenirs, saffron, and Kaawah tea. You can even get your photo taken in the Kashmiri attire while riding on a shikara!

Visit an Apple Orchard

Apple orchards are a must visit attraction in Srinagar. If you are visiting Srinagar in April, you will find the apple trees in full bloom. If you are visiting Srinagar in August -September, you will find apples hanging in bunches from the trees.

While you are in an orchard, you can eat as many apples from the trees as you can for FREE. If you want to buy them, you will get them for a throw away price.

Relish Wazwan

Wazwan is a traditional Kashmiri feast that is an integral part of the local culture and cuisine. The feast typically consists of a lavish spread of meat-based dishes, served with rice and a variety of side dishes. Wazwan is not just a meal, but a symbol of hospitality and generosity in Kashmiri culture.

The meat used in Wazwan is typically lamb, which is slow cooked over a wood fire until it is tender and succulent. The meat is then served with a variety of gravies and sauces, each with its unique flavor and aroma.

The main course of Wazwan typically includes dishes such as Rogan Josh, Gushtaba, Rista, and Tabak Maaz. Rogan Josh is a spicy lamb dish that is cooked in a tomato-based gravy. Gushtaba is a meatball dish that is made with ground lamb and is cooked in rich yogurt-based gravy. Rista is a lamb meatball dish that is served in fiery red chili gravy. Tabak Maaz is a dish made with fried lamb ribs that are cooked with a variety of spices.

Whether you hire a taxi on your own or you are there on a packaged tour, you will be taken to the shopping emporium from where your taxi driver gets his commission. So, unless you are traveling on your own, you cannot go explore the shopping streets on your own.

If you want to buy authentic pashmina shawls, silk, or premium quality carpets, go to emporiums with long legacy. But if you are not particular about buying premium stuff, here’s what you can do to get good quality stuff at reasonable prices.

• Go shopping at the places your driver takes you to (as you really don’t have a choice sometimes) and bargain really hard.
• Don’t buy stuff from the first shop your driver takes you too. That will be the expensive kind. After spending some time in the shop come out looking disappointed and complain to your driver that it was pricy.
• Your driver will now take you to a cheaper place.
• If you want to get quality stuff at a really cheap rate, shop at the stores surrounding Jamia masjid. Your driver will not take you to any particular shop or shopping street that you ask them to as they may not get commission from there, however, they will take you to Jamia masjid anyway. This is where the locals shop, so you can be sure of the quality too.

A three-day itinerary is a great way to explore Srinagar and experience its best offerings. Here’s my suggested itinerary for a three-day trip to Srinagar:

Day 1 in Srinagar

Shalimar Garden: This is the most famous of the Mughal gardens.

Nishat Garden: If you are running out of time and weighing in leaving out one of the Mughal Gardens, then I would suggest Nishat Gardens.

Shikara Ride on Dal Lake: Plan to do shikara ride after 3:30 pm to avoid the piercing glare of the sun.

Day 2 in Srinagar

Shankracharya Temple: You will need to climb over 200 steps to reach the temple, so plan it first thing in the morning.

Chasma Shahi: Carry an empty bottle to fill in water from the natural spring with healing properties.

Pari Mahal: Pari Mahal is just 2.5 kilometers from Chashma Shahi, so you can cover them one after the other.

Tulip Garden: Open only for a limited time in the month of April. Plan your trip in the second or third week of April if you want to visit the tulip garden.

Shopping: As you will be in town on this day, you can go visit fancy emporiums in Srinagar on this day.

Day 3 in Srinagar

Hari Parbat: There will be a lot of walking, so plan Hari Parbat as the first thing in the morning.

Badamwari: Badamwari is on the way to Hari Parbat but visit this on your way down so as to cool yourself off after all that walking.

Jamia Masjid: This is where you can do shopping at cheap prices, so plan your timing accordingly.

Hazratbal Shrine: Plan to spend some time here as the view of Dal Lake from here is spectacular.

A garden built by an emperor for his queen, Shalimar Bagh has been a top honeymoon destination over the years. An architecture, flaunting the Islamic garden layout, known as Persian gardens, Shalimar Bagh is the largest among all Mughal gardens in Srinagar. It features three terraced areas, which used to be treated for different purposes. The uppermost area was for the women of the royal family and the central one, called ‘Diwan-i-Khas’ was for the emperor. ‘Diwan-i-Aam’ was the outer portion of the garden, which was open to the public.

Shalimar Bagh was built in 1619 by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife Nur Jahan. It used to be their Royal Court and residence during the summer. 1. Dal Lake

On a trip to Srinagar, Dal Lake finds the first place on the itinerary. Laid out with the Persian style of architecture, the  Shalimar Bagh garden is sprawled in 31 acres of land. Built on the periphery of the Dal Lake the garden was built to please Queen Noor Jahan by Shehenshah Jahangir. Laden with trees on the sides and a canal flowing through the middle of the garden paved with polished stones the garden is a mesmerising beauty. With three terraces each portraying different views of the garden, Shalimar Bagh is drenched in its own beauty.

3. Shankaracharya Temple

Dating back to 200 BC the temple is built on the top of Shankaracharya Hill . Being devoted to Lord Shiva the temple holds a prime significance to the Buddhists as well. The temple involves a little trekking for the devotees and is said to stand on an octagonal pavement. The temple has been renovated a several times and the premises of the temple impart a breath-taking view of the valley below.

4. Nigeen Lake

In contrast with the Dal Lake, Nageen Lake is quieter and calmer and separated through a causeway from the Dal Lake. While the centre of the lake has clean blue placid waters the edges reflect the trees that are rowed along the shore line. With clear skies over head and wrapped between the mountains and cruising on the shikara is one of the best experiences of Srinagar.

5. Jamia Masjid

With the hushed interiors that are an irony to the surrounding busyness of the bustling markets outside the premises of the mosque, Jamia Masjid is one of the holiest Islamic shrines of the country. Intricately carved wooden pillars count to 370, the mosque reflects Indo-Saracenic architecture. Elegantly standing tall amid the accurate square garden the mosque is of unmatchable in all forms.

6. Hazratbal Shrine

The white marbled dome structure reflecting its charm in the waters of Dal Lake on its western shore is the Hazratbal Mosque . Being a prime place of worship for the followers of Islam the mosque holds the relics of the prophet Muhammad. The shrine is a beautiful architectural edifice that outshines perfectly.

7. Pari Mahal

Jamia masjid is an  Indo-Saracenic architectural style Mosque and is one of the most popular and revered mosques in Srinagar.  With a stunning courtyard and 370 grand wooden pillars, the building is truly majestic. It was built by Sultan Sikander ( Shahmir dynasty) in 1400 AD, under the order of Mir Mohammad Hamdani, son of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani. Later, the son of Sultan Sikander – Sultan Zainul Abideen got the mosque extended. It is located in the old city and is easily accessible from all parts of the city. The mosque has a large prayer hall and can accommodate up to 33,000 people. The mosque is also known for its beautiful architecture and is a popular tourist attraction in Srinagar. It has been renovated many times over the years and still remains a popular tourist destination.

Located in downtown Srinagar, the tomb received never-like-before attention in the year 1899, when Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the Ahmadiyya movement claimed that this tomb belongs to Jesus Christ, about which he wrote extensively in his book,  Masih Hindustan-mein  ( Jesus in India ). The treatise was published in Urdu in 1908 and was translated into English in 1944. According to him, Jesus survived the crucifixion, travelled to Indian subcontinent where he lived until his death at the age of 120 and was buried in the beautiful valley of Kashmir. As opposed to the mentions in, the Holy Bible that Jesus was crucified on a hill of Golgotha (meaning ‘place of the skull’ in Aramaic) at the age of 33 and was buried in a new sepulchre (tomb) in a garden outside of Jerusalem and as Quran too mentions, on the third day, he ascended to heaven). One of the many reasons, these claims originated because of the presence of a rock carving in the shrine, most probably of Yuz Asaf, which shows the feet with wounds from crucifixion or some similar injuries. He identifies Yuza Asaf as Jesus and it means ‘son of Joseph’. The Bible and Quran mentions Joseph and Mary as the father of Jesus and were born Jews. In Kashmiri language, Yuz Asaf means the healer or the shepherd.

Khanqah-e-Moula

Khanqah-e-Moula The Shrine of Shahi Hamdan is one of the most important religious sites in Srinagar. It is located on the bank of the Jehlum River in the old city and is considered to be the first mosque ever built in Srinagar. The Shrine was constructed by Sultan Sikander in memory of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani from 1389-1413. Every year on the 6th of Zilhaj (the last month of the Muslim calendar), the death anniversary of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, devotees flock to the Shrine to pay their respects. Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi

Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi Srinagar is one of the most important Sikh Gurudwaras in Kashmir. It is located just outside the southern gate of Hari Parbat fort, and it comprises a rectangular hall with the sanctum in the middle and a spacious terrace in front. An old well nearby is said to have been dug on the orders of Guru Hargobind.

The sixth guru of Sikhism travelled through Kashmir and stopped to preach occasionally. He stayed at this Gurdwara for a few days, and it has become an important historical site for Sikhs. Today, it is included in the tourist attractions of Srinagar city in Kashmir valley.

Hari parbat fort , also known as “Kohi Maaran”, is a historic fort located in Sharika Hill. It was originally built by Afghan Governor Atta Mohammad Khan, and later expanded by Emperor Akbar in 1590. The fort has a famous shrine of Makhdoom Sahab on the southern slope and Shakti temple of the western slope. There is also a Gurdwara which commemorates the visit of Guru Har Gobind Sing. The present fort was built by an Afghan Ruler “Shah Shuja Durrani” in 1808.

Now the fort is maintained by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It provides a panaromic  view of of the entire city of Srinagar and Makhdoom Sahib shrine. The fort is a popular tourist attraction and is worth visiting when in Kashmir. And then we will visit the Sharika Temple.
