As Langkawi is an island, there is no direct road connection to Langkawi .

You can either drive or ride a bus to any of 2 departure points – One at Kuala Kedah and another at  Kuala Perlis – where you can board a ferry to Langkawi.

But both routes will take you about 3-4 hours total. And that doesn’t include any traffic jams during the holiday season.

Once you’ve reach your jetty of choice, you can park your car at the port for RM10 to RM15 per day .

3.1. Method 1: Penang To Langkawi Via Ferry Terminal At Kuala Kedah

This first method will clock in a total duration of around 3 hours 15 minutes. Provided that there isn’t any heavy traffic or other delays.

This second method of driving to the Kuala Perlis Jetty from George Town Penang takes slightly longer than the first method with a total travel duration of around 3 hours 35 minutes.

3.2.3. Take The RoRo Ferry Service From Kuala Perlis Jetty To Langkawi Tanjung Lembung Port

Alternatively, there are roll-on-roll-off (RoRo) ferries that carry cargo and cars along with passengers too.

Langkawi RoRo Ferry Services and Langkawi Auto Express are two appointed service operators of RoRo ferries.

These ferries allow you to drive your vehicle on board, ride to your destination, and drive off at Langkawi. Note that the final destination is not Kuah Jetty, unlike with the previous methods.

The cost to board these ferries depends on the size of your vehicle and the number of passengers.

Note: It costs RM348 for a return fare for a small car (below 1500cc), its driver, and one accompanying passenger. For motorcycles, the fee imposed is RM140.

Seeing that it’s quite pricey, you’re better off renting a car for RM100 to RM200 per day (depending on the car model) or using a ride hailing service if you only plan to stay less than 4 days on the island.

4. Penang To Langkawi By Bus

Another affordable means to get from Penang to Langkawi (without having to drive) is to first travel by bus from Penang island to Penang Sentral, Butterworth.

From Butterworth, you’ll need to board another bus to either the Kuala Perlis jetty or Kuala Kedah jetty. Similar to the section above (see 3.3 and 3.4).

Step 1: Penang Island To Penang Sentral Butterworth

If you’re not already in Butterworth, you can take a ferry from Penang Island to the mainland (Butterworth).

Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal (Butterworth)

The cost is RM1.2 for adults, RM0.60 for kids, and students below 21 years old get to board for free.

For more information, check out this detailed guide on how to get from Penang Georgetown to Butterworth here.

Step 2: Penang Sentral Butterworth To Kuala Perlis/ Kuala Kedah Jetty

Take a bus from Penang Sentral Butterworth to travel to either the Kuala Perlis jetty or Kuala Kedah jetty.

Option 1: Bus From Penang Sentral Butterworth To Kuala Perlis Jetty

Since the bus stop at Kuala Perlis is a mere 6-minute walk to the ferry terminal, this is the most convenient option.

Plus, there are 5 reputable coach operators who offer up to 17 trips daily for an average price of RM20 per person.

Penang Sentral Butterworth To Kuala Perlis Jetty:

  • Travel Distance: 158km
  • Average Duration: 2 hours 26 minutes
  • Average Price: RM20

Option 2: Bus From Penang Sentral Butterworth To Kuala Kedah Jetty

There aren’t any direct bus routes from Butterworth to the Kuala Kedah jetty. So you can see why this option is not as popular as option 1.

As such, you’ll need to take a bus from Butterworth to the Shahab Perdana Terminal (Alor Setar bus terminal).

Penang Sentral Butterworth to the Shahab Perdana Bus Terminal:

  • Travel Distance: 102km
  • Average Duration: 1 hour 57 minutes
  • Average Price: RM15

From here, you still need to get on a local bus to make your way to the Kuala Kedah Jetty (12 km away). This additional leg typically costs RM3 per pax.

Or you can try a car hailing service.

Terminal Bas Shahab Perdana to Kuala Kedah Jetty:

  • Duration: 30 minutes

Your final stretch of this journey is to hop on a ferry from Kuala Kedah Jetty to Kuah Jetty Langkawi .

5. Penang To Langkawi By Cruise

Update: The cruise has been temporarily halted due to Omicron.

Alternatively, set sail in an all-inclusive vibrant cruise from Penang to Langkawi via Genting’s Star Pieces cruise.

Note: Since its inaugural cruise on 22 December 2022, stringent requirements were introduced for public health safety. Among these, only fully vaccinated guests and crew can board and passenger capacity is now 50%.

While not the fastest (~5 hours), the cheapest option to travel between Penang and Langkawi is by bus and ferry. You’ll first need to board a bus from Penang to Butterworth, then to the Kuala Perlis jetty (this is the recommended jetty) and finally, ride on the ferry to Kuah. The estimated total cost is around ~RM40per person per trip . For comparison, travelling by bus from Penang but taking the ferry from Kuala Kedah Jetty instead of Kuala Perlis Jetty will cost around RM42 per person per trip. If you manage to secure a flight ticket at RM80++, it’s a good deal considering the time saved with an estimated flight time of 40 minutes.

The fastest travel option between Penang and Langkawi is by air. The flight time is 40 minutes. But it is still quicker than taking the bus/driving and ferry. Connectivity from Langkawi International Airport is seamless with many taxis and e-haling rides available at your disposal.

Being a relatively small island with no public transport, the best way to get around Langkawi is to rent a car or motorbike or engage e-hailing services like Grab. If you don’t mind paying extra, you can seek out guided tours for day tours, or hire a private charter to take you to the best attractions in Langkawi.

Yes, Langkawi is a duty-free haven (since 1987). As such, you can purchase chocolates , liquor, fragrances, designer clothes, and kitchenware at cheaper prices compared other parts of the country.

If you like the outdoors and water sports, there are endless activities to try and places to explore in Langkawi. You can also do some shopping. Discover the top things to do in Langkawi for a memorable island escapade!

Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Pantai Kok, Tanjung Rhu and Kuah are the 5 best locations to stay in Langkawi. While some areas are relatively more touristy than others, each is unique in terms of landscape, available amenities, and crowd level: Pantai Cenang – Here’s where you’ll find the most vibrant nightlife with a good mix of cheaper and mid-range accommodations . It’s a convenient 20 minutes from the Langkawi International Airport. Pantai Tengah – Pantai Tengah has more relaxed vibes than Pantai Cenang. There are a few idyllic resorts, spas, and guesthouses here. Pantai Kok – Several first-class resorts reside here. Tanjung Rhu – This is a secluded stretch of pristine coast with 5-star hotels such as the Four Seasons Resort and Tanjung Rhu Resort Kuah – Smallish and laid-back district capital of Langkawi with several heavily thronged duty-free outlets.

This depends on your travel schedule and budget. Flying back is the most time-saving option. However, if you want to save some money, you can try the slower ride back by bus and ferry. Do check out our detailed guide here .

With various alternatives to get from Penang to Langkawi, weigh your options carefully. If you’re traveling with kids in tow, being cooped up in a bus for long periods will put your parenting skills to the test.

But if you plan early enough, there isn’t a significant price difference between traveling by air or land so we would suggest flying if you prioritize convenience in your itinerary for Langkawi !

Star Cruises to sail to Langkawi

star cruise from penang to langkawi

LANGKAWI, 26 March 2021: Star cruises in Malaysia is planning to resumes sailings with Langkawi, the signature destination for the 13 May launch that marks the start of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Holiday.

The 1,600 passenger Star Pisces will serve the proposed Langkawi cruises offering a two-night “Langkawi Escape” and a series of one-night “Straits of Malacca” sailings from homeport Penang.

star cruise from penang to langkawi

The two-night “Langkawi Escape Cruise” will depart Penang every Friday and Sunday, and passengers can have 10 hours of port time to explore Langkawi. Also departing Penang, the one night “Straits of Malacca Cruise” will sail every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Star Pisces will become the first ship to resume sailing in Malaysia and will be instrumental in promoting tourism recovery for Langkawi, the country’s premier island destination.

The Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) is confident that the domestic cruises restart will boost the island’s tourism industry, which has been hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

star cruise from penang to langkawi

Lada senior principal assistant manager (tourism division) Azmil Munif Mohd Bukhari told the New Strait Times cruises had been a significant contributing factor to tourist arrivals in Langkawi in the last couple of years.

“Tourist arrivals in 2019 stood at 3.9 million. It dropped by 54% last year to 1.8 million due to the pandemic. We are happy and welcome the resumption of cruises as it will help the industry.”

Last year, the island recorded 65,443 cruise passenger arrivals.

Genting Cruise Lines in Malaysia that owns the Star Cruises brand, says it will give Malaysians the opportunity to rediscover cruising again.

The domestic cruises to Langkawi will be instrumental in revitalising the ailing travel agent sector, giving them an opportunity to kick-start travel sales and rebuild the cruise economy.

Initially operating at a reduced capacity, all activities onboard Star Pisces will comply with group sizes for social distancing in line with national measures that will discourage close contact between groups.

Genting Cruise Lines, which owns Star, has already returned to service in Asia with Dream Cruises.

The company was the first cruise line to resume service in Asia, having completed about nine months of incident-free operations in Taiwan with Dream Cruises’ Explorer Dream and about five months in Singapore with World Dream, welcoming more than 150,000 guests on board so far.

Of course, don’t think of a Langkawi sunset cruise as a backpacker booze binge cruise like those you can get on in Phi Phi island and Phuket — on the contrary, the atmosphere is much more intimate and upmarket here, and of course, YOU decide how much you drink.

Here’s all you need to know about booking your sunset cruise in Langkawi.

How much does a sunset cruise in Langkawi cost?

First of all, expect to pay a minimum of RM150 per person, which includes a BBQ dinner, a free-flow open bar, a buffet dinner, and return hotel transfers. Prices increase up to about RM330 depending on boats and levels of service offered.

How to get tickets for a Langkawi Sunset Cruise

You can certainly shop around once you are in Langkawi, but the best thing to do is to book your Langkawi sunset cruise in advance for the exact day you need it.

Our partners at Klook and GetYourGuide offer discounted sunset cruise tickets you can purchase in advance to avoid stress.

For the moment, the best option to buy tickets for a Langkawi sunset cruise is here . You can select from a basic package (cheapest at 86RM only, excluding transfer and dinner, so not that appealing IMHO) to a luxury package. Check here for all the details .

Where to board your boat

In general, the majority of sunset cruise operators in Langkawi depart from the jetty of Resort World Langkawi at 5 pm either using a 76ft schooner or 46ft catamaran.

This is a map of the departure jetty location:

What to Expect from a Sunset Cruise in Langkawi

I took a sunset cruise, of course, and I can recommend it especially if you are traveling with your partner or spouse. When we arrived at Kuah’s port in Langkawi in the middle of the afternoon, we were transferred to the boat where two padded lounge chairs were waiting for us on the deck of a yacht. We used Tropical Charters , Langkawi’s most established sunset cruise operator. We shared the boat with a group of Kiwis on a bachelor’s party holiday, and things got a little wild — simply put, more singing and dancing than you’d maybe get with a less party-focused group.

Langkawi sunset cruise people enjoying on deck

Expect about 3 hours of sailing, eating, sunset-watching, swimming, and fun. The boat will take you around Langkawi’s southern islets chasing the tail of the sun.

Food on board a Langkawi sunset cruise

A sumptuous seafood barbecue is provided to all guests. Munching on marinated shrimp and barbecued chicken fresh off the grill is one amazing way to end the day admiring the sun diving into the ocean and leaving a sparkling trail of stars in its wake.

Drinks on board a Langkawi Sunset Cruise

A free flow of drinks is included, meaning you can drink as much as you can take. Please be responsible This means you can leave Langkawi’s port with piña coladas in hand as you start sailing over peaceful waters and among viridian-covered atolls that emerge from the ocean like the backs of colossal, shy ostriches.

Of course, if you don’t feel like getting drunk, each of the bars fitted in the boats also serves mocktails or soft drinks. Just get your pick and enjoy.

Jump in the Salt Water Jacuzzi

star cruise from penang to langkawi

“Ladies and gentlemen, get into your swimming clothes, for our own unique marine Jacuzzi is waiting,” a thin but muscular Malay guy in shades and red trunks announced from the upper deck when we took our Langkawi sunset cruise.

The Salt Water Jacuzzi is a unique Langkawi experience: tourists gather at the back of the yacht, where a rope net is slung into the sea. You can sit on the net, and float in the Andaman Sea while having a cocktail or a beer.

It’s not uncommon to see the boat staff throw beer cans at the people who are already dangling on the net. Floating in the ocean, one can enjoy a natural whirlpool-like massage on the trail of the yacht, letting the spirits of the drinks blend with those that pull an orange curtain over the horizon.

Dance the sunset away

The cruise will return back to port around 8 pm, right after the sun goes down. You’ll have most likely some time to enjoy the impromptu dance floor that’s organized on deck.

Nature-based Sunset Cruises in Langkawi: more options for families and nature lovers

We understand that partying on a boat may not be the perfect choice for families with children, but they don’t have to worry. There are other sunset cruises in Langkawi that are more geared towards family tastes — and if you continue to Penang, don’t forget to check out our list of things to do in Penang with kids.

To pair a fun boating experience at sunset with nature exploration, we recommend the Flying Foxes & Wetlands Sunset Cruise . You’ll cruise from Kilim’s Mangrove Forest towards islet Pulau Dangli, where you’ll marvel at the flight of the flying foxes, Malaysia’s biggest bats, and feed tropical fish. It’s a very good choice for families with children.

The sunset mangrove cruise is another very interesting option. It doesn’t use a yacht, of course, but just kayaks. It’s lesser crowded than other kayak tours because fewer people prefer to do it at night. It’s perfect to experience the quieter and more natural side of Langkawi and has dinner included, consumed amid a natural setting. It includes transfers from your hotel, insurance, dinner, and a guide. Book it here.

Langkawi Sunset Cruise: the verdict

star cruise from penang to langkawi

A sunset cruise in Langkawi is a great and not very expensive opportunity to enjoy the island’s spectacular sunsets. In our opinion, it’s best suited for couples or single people who are looking to meet others and break the ice after a few drinks.

The Salt Water Jacuzzi is a fun way to have a cocktail immersed in water as you see the sunset dip between Langkawi’s karts formations.

We don’t believe this activity is very well-suited for children, so families with kids would better look at other options for sunset cruises in Langkawi that take into nature and wildlife spotting (the nightly bat exodus is always quite spectacular) which are also widely available and recommended. Most important of all, whatever you decide to do, enjoy your sunset fun!

What to expect when visiting Penang

Penang is a cultural melting pot on the northwest coast of Malaysia. For such a small island, it has so much to offer — vibrant culture, colourful heritage, amazing food, urban wonders, and untouched rainforest.

At its heart is George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a city rich in history. Famous for its street art, you can easily spend hours exploring its alleys. Sure, the island can be touristy. Yet somehow, it is able to maintain a laidback vibe and a charm that you can only find in Penang.

4 ways to get from Langkawi to Penang

Langkawi to penang by ferry + bus via kuala perlis.

Travelling by bus still involves a ferry ride, but this crossing is shorter than the direct ferry trip from Langkawi to Penang. This is an alternate option if you’re prone to seasickness and do not want to take a flight.

To take the bus, you first need to get the ferry to the mainland. The closest town is Kuala Perlis, which is located 35 km east of Langkawi.

Step 1: Langkawi (Kuah Jetty) to Kuala Perlis by Ferry

Kuah Jetty is the departure point for ferries bound for Kuala Perlis. This port is 40 minutes away from Pantai Cenang. Fares start from 40 MYR ($8.50) for a private taxi, but you can also get cheaper rates with a shared taxi ride.

Ferries operating this route have varying departure times from 08:30 to 18:00 daily. For the latest schedules and online booking, check the Langkawi Ferry Line website.

A ferry ticket costs 18 MYR ($3.80) + 40 MYR ($8.50) and the journey takes around 1hr 15m.

The ferries dock at Kuala Perlis Port, which is only 200 meters away from the bus terminal.

Step 2: Kuala Perlis to Butterworth by Bus

From Kuala Perlis, buses bound for Butterworth, a mainland town just 3 km across from Penang Island, normally depart in the early evening. If you prefer to travel earlier in the day, we suggest you ask your hotel for morning or afternoon bus schedules.

But if you don’t mind an early evening departure, you can book any of the trips below on BusOnlineTicket .

The buses arrive at Penang Sentral in Butterworth.

Alternate option: Kuala Perlis to Butterworth by Train

There is also an option to take the train from Kuala Perlis to Butterworth. It’s double the cost of the bus, but it’s 30 minutes faster. Also, trains in Malaysia are generally more comfortable than buses.

From Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal, take a 15-minute taxi ride to Arau Railway Station. Taxi rates start from 29 MYR ($6.10).

You can take one of the regular and cheap KTM Komuter trains. Trains bound for Butterworth depart from Arau almost every hour from 05:44 to 21:44. The journey takes 1.5 hours and fares start from 12.50 MYR ($2.60).

PRO TIP: For solo female travellers, it is best to take the Komuter Ladies Coach. This coach reduces the risk of sexual harassment and helps ease off direct contact with members of the opposite sex.

Step 3: Butterworth to Penang by Ferry

Penang Sentral is conveniently connected by a walkway to Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal. From here, ferries depart for Penang Island twice every hour from 05:20 to 00:10.

A ticket costs 3 MYR ($0.60) and this ferry ride takes 10 – 20 minutes, depending on the water conditions.

The ferries dock at Weld Quay, which is located 2 km away from George Town. To reach the town centre, you can take a 5-minute taxi for around 13 MYR ($2.70) or a bus (Line 101) for 5 MYR ($1.10).

Langkawi to Penang by Ferry + Train via Kuala Kedah

The last option is transiting from Langkawi to Penang through Kuala Kedah, a mainland town 60 km northeast off of Langkawi. It is located between Kuala Perlis and Penang.

Step 1: Langkawi to Kuala Kedah by Ferry

Ferries operating from Langkawi to Kuala Kedah also depart from Kuah Jetty, which is located 40 minutes east of Pantai Cenang. A private taxi ride costs 40 MYR ($8.50), although you can also find cheaper shared taxis.

There are ferry departures every day from 07:30 to 18:00, but schedules vary day to day. You can check the Langkawi Ferry Line website for the latest departure times. You can also book with them directly.

Travel time is around 1hr 45m and a ticket costs 23 MYR ($4.90).

Step 2: Kuala Kedah to Alor Setar by Bus

In front of Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal, you can take a cheap local bus to Alor Setar, a train station located 13 km east. A ticket costs around 2 MYR ($0.40) for the 25-minute bus ride.

Kindly ask the bus driver to drop you off at the nearest bus stop to Alor Setar Railway Sation. From here, you’ll have to walk around 800m (10 minutes) to the train station.

Alternatively, you can just take a direct taxi from Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal to Alor Setar Railway Station. Rates start from 25 MYR ($5.30).

Step 3: Alor Setar to Butterworth by Train

From Alor Setar, you can take a southbound train to travel the 90 km to Butterworth. There are 7 available trains daily. You can buy your ticket at the train station for 17 MYR ($3.60).

Again, if you are a solo female traveller, you may want to take the Ladies Coach. This is identified through special stickers on doors and windows.

Alternative option: Alor Setar to Butterworth by Bus

You can also take the bus from Alor Setar to Butterworth. Bus fares are similar to the train, but travel time is longer at around 2hrs 20m. Also, the train is much more comfortable.

However, if you’re arriving at Alor Setar midday (between 10:00 to 17:00, when there are no train trips for this route), you might want to consider checking out the bus station for available buses.

Step 4: Butterworth to Penang by Ferry

At Butterworth, trains arrive at Butterworth Railway Station while buses park at Penang Sentral. Both are connected to Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal by a walkway.

From here, ferries depart for Penang Island twice every hour from 05:20 to 00:10. A ticket costs 3 MYR ($0.60) for the 10 to 20-minute ferry ride.

At Penang Island, the ferries dock at Weld Quay, which is 2 km away from George Town. You can reach the town centre by a 5-minute taxi that costs 13 MYR ($2.70) or a 20-minute bus (Line 101) that costs 5 MYR ($1.10).

Langkawi to Penang by Ferry*

IMPORTANT : Ferry services from Langkawi to Penang have been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020. The last time we checked, January 2024, operations for this route have yet to resume.

If you’re staying in the main tourist area of Pantai Cenang in Langkawi, you’ll first have to travel 20 km east (40 minutes) to Kuah Jetty. This is the departure point for ferries bound for Penang. The taxi is the only transport option available for this part of the journey.

A taxi ride from Pantai Cenang to Kuah Jetty costs around 40 MYR ($8.50). If you want to lower the cost, you can always try finding shared taxis in town.

From Kuah Jetty, ferries bound for Penang depart twice daily at 10:30 and 15:00. As there are limited trips, we highly recommend that you book online beforehand. Tickets for the morning trip are available on BookAway for 94 MYR ($19.90).

If you’re not really an early riser and would prefer the afternoon trip, you’ll have to buy your ticket at the port. Ferry tickets at the port are cheaper at 75 MYR ($15.90), but you’ll have to buy them at least 2 hours before departure time.

The ferry journey from Langkawi to Penang takes 2hrs 45m.

The ferries dock at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, which is located 4 km east of George Town. Similar to the first leg of the journey, your only option to reach town is a taxi. Fares start from 13 MYR ($2.70) for the 5-minute ride.

Langkawi to Penang by Flight

Langkawi Airport is located 8 km north of Pantai Cenang. You’ll need to take a 15-minute taxi, with fares from 30 MYR ($6.30) when you hail them from the street.

Alternatively, you can pre-book your ride with Klook . Their rates are a few dollars more expensive, but you’ll be assured of a stress-free ride and a good driver. Rates start from 41 MYR ($8.70) for a 3-seater car.

Reserve a Taxi with Klook

Air Asia, Firefly and Malaysia Airlines offer several flights from Langkawi to Penang every day. Airfares start from 90 MYR ($19) for the 40-minute flight.

Rates can go up during peak season though, so it’s always best to book your flight well in advance if you can.

From Penang Airport, you can get to George Town via 2 ways: a 30-minute taxi journey or a 1-hour bus ride. Fares start from 30 MYR ($6.30) and 3 MYR ($0.60), respectively.

TIP: If you decide to travel by plane, please consider including a carbon compensation fee to reduce your impact on the environment.

Langkawi Cruise Port Guide

Cruises to Langkawi are the perfect way to see and experience the magic of Malaysia while exploring this nature-filled region’s 100 or so myth-shrouded islands and tropical splendor. Langkawi, also known as the “Jewel of Kedah”, is an archipelago off the northwest coast of Malaysia , famous for its breathtaking beaches, lush tropical rainforests, mouth-watering local cuisine, and biodiversity. Langkawi also offers fantastic duty-free and market shopping options, as well as hand-made artisan gifts at places like the Atma Alam Batik Village in the city of Kedah. Be sure to visit cultural heritage sites like Eagle Square, the Sri Murugan Temple, and the Mahsuri Tomb and Museum.

Langkawi has been awarded World Geopark status by UNESCO and is home to over 200 bird species, “flying” tree snakes, flying foxes, and even colorful flying dragons. Uncover dizzying panoramic views while suspended high over the rainforest as you walk the winding Langkawi Sky Bridge, or ride the SkyCab cable car for a thrilling adventure above the treeline. Sun-seekers can unwind on the beautiful white sands of Tanjung Rhu Beach, where calm blue waters are framed by craggy limestone rock formations. Top sites & attractions for cruises to langkawi, eagle square.

Eagle Square, also known as Dataran Lang, is one of the top sights in Kuah, the main town on Langkawi island. The square is home to a towering eagle statue that greets visitors as they come into port and symbolizes the region’s close relationship to nature and these mighty raptors. Eagle Square has a great walking area lined with miniature fountains, bridges, and terraces, and offers visitors great views of the Kuah Bay and the forested islands beyond. You’ll also find small souvenir stalls to browse here.

Pulau Payar

This island lies in the Straits of Malacca about 20 miles south of Langkawi and is the perfect getaway for a day trip while on a cruise. The island is famous for its vivid coral reefs, where divers and snorkelers can look for moray eels, clownfish, grouper and barracuda in the protected marine sanctuary. There are also incredible nature trails on land at Palau Payar, where dense rainforest frames sandy beaches lapped by turquoise and blue waters.

Langkawi Sky Bridge

The Langkawi Sky Bridge is a 410-foot cable-stayed bridge that wraps like a snake above the treeline at the peak of Mount Mat Cincang (Gunung Mat Cincang). The bridge deck sits at a height of over 2,000 feet above sea level and offers unprecedented views of the island’s rich green forests, coastline, and villages. To reach the Sky Bridge, you’ll ride the thrilling Langkawi Cable Car from the base station at the Oriental Village shopping center down below.

Learn More About Asia Shore Excursions

Things to do in langkawi, tour the langkawi mangrove forest.

The Langkawi Mangrove Forest, also known as the Kilim Geoforest Park, features a dense mangrove forest, multiple lagoons, and pristine beaches. Take a boat tour through emerald green waterways and learn from local experts about the park’s biodiversity, conservation, and history. The park is extensive, and you’ll be able to explore bat caves, observe snake habitats, and look out for monkeys scampering through the trees. You may also catch a glimpse of majestic kite eagles or white-bellied fish eagles as they perch on branches or swoop down on their prey.

Try Watersports at Pantai Cenang

Pantai Cenang is one of the most lively beaches in all of Langkawi. Go for a fun and fast jet-ski around the shores of this stunning white sand beach, or take a banana boat ride with friends. If you really want some thrills and spectacular views, try paragliding high above the surf and seaside treeline, then lie out on the beach with a refreshing tropical cocktail. There are also guided snorkeling tours available for both beginners and experts, and fascinatingg underwater sea life you can observe nearby.

Hike Around Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls

If you’re looking for more of an active adventure while on a cruise to Langkawi, try a nature hike around the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls. These falls are fed by seven different sources on Mount Mat Cincang and culminate in a stunning cascade of water that pours down magnificently shaped rocks. The Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls are located in the rural western section of the island, near the Langkawi Sky Bridge. To reach the falls you’ll need to do a short hike (around 20 to 30 minutes), so make sure to bring comfortable shoes.

Top Food and Drink Near the Langkawi Port

Local food in Langkawi embraces many traditional Malay spices and flavors with an emphasis on fresh fruits, fish, and curries. You’ll also find many international food options near the Langkawi port, including good Chinese food, Thai food, and BBQ. Make sure to try classic local dishes like nasi lemak, consisting of fragrant coconut milk rice cooked in a pandan leaf, or pajeri nenas, a pineapple curry made with star anise and ginger. This is the tropics, so try a refreshing water chestnut juice or an ice-cold Tiger beer between stops as you tour the island on a cruise to Langkawi.

Culture & History of Langkawi

Langkawi is known as an island of legends, and its history and culture both reflect this in lore, architecture, and art. For many years, the island was ruled by the Islamic Sultanate of Kedah, and later by the British during the colonial period of the early 20th century.  Langkawi was briefly ruled by Thailand, although its Thai influence and cultural roots go far beyond that. Modern Langkawi’s culture is marked by a focus on maritime commerce and tourism, and it is one of the busiest and most visited islands in Malaysia, for good reason.

Langkawi Port Facilities and Location

Langkawi’s cruise ship jetty is located just under 10 miles southwest of Kuah, the island’s principal city, on the southwestern tip of the island. This is really just a point for embarking and disembarking your ship, with easy access to shuttles and taxis at the terminal. You can also get to Kuah and many of the surrounding islands via ferry if you wish.

Transportation in Langkawi

Public transportation isn’t always reliable in Langkawi, but this shouldn’t be an issue thanks to an abundance of other options. Tour buses and taxis will meet you right at the dock, and you can also rent a car or motorbike. Taxis have fixed rates. When driving, be diligent and mindful about local traffic laws and often chaotic roads. As it’s hot and humid year-round, don’t overestimate the amount of walking you might want to do. There are bicycle options in some areas, and bikes are a great way to get around the boardwalk on the waterfront area near the terminal.

Shopping Near the Langkawi Cruise Port

There are many great shopping options available on cruises to Langkawi, with great duty-free offerings as well. You’ll find lots of popular international brands at the Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall, or Jetty Point Complex next to the Kuah Jetty and Eagle Square. For more of an artisan shopping experience, head to the Atma Alam Batik Village, a batik textile factory with a showroom that features exquisite, authentic textiles, bags, paintings, purses, and more.

Local Currency & Tipping Options

The local currency in Langkawi is the Malaysian ringgit, and cash can be withdrawn fairly easily from numerous ATMs spread throughout the capital of Kuah and other popular tourist towns. Cards are accepted by most restaurants, hotels, and major tour companies. For smaller merchants and taxis, it’s recommended to use cash. Tipping, as in the rest of Malaysia, is not customary, but small tips for restaurant servers, hotel staff, and tour guides are always appreciated.

Metalworker’s steely tribute set to adorn Jawi temple

Tuesday, 02 Apr 2024

Lee posing with the dragon sculpture in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. — KT GOH/The Star

A MAGNIFICENT stainless steel dragon stands as a tribute by Lee Hong Kheun to his late wife.

Crafted entirely by hand and standing 1.5m, it required six months of painstaking effort and 10,000 meticulously assembled pieces.

“It is made out of a single sheet of stainless steel that was cut into individual profiles to make parts of the dragon.

“The pieces were then hammered into different shapes and welded together to form the dragon,” said 75-year-old Lee, at his home in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

The dragon is positioned atop an artificial rock, striking a majestic pose.

Known as Logam Lee for his metalworking expertise, Lee’s attention to detail in crafting the dragon’s expression from its head, claws and proportions is evident.

“Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful,” said Lee on his life philosophy.

He revealed that the choice of a dragon, coinciding with the Year of the Dragon, was significant.

“Before my wife’s passing two years ago, she had wished to contribute a dragon to a temple in Jawi in south Seberang Perai.

“This dragon was specifically made to fulfil her wish,” he said.

The veteran from Bukit Minyak recalled having contributed a similar stainless steel dragon to the same temple some 14 years ago.

“It was a 7m-long dragon in a horizontal position, so I decided to do a dragon in vertical form this time.”

The dragon not only fulfils Lee’s commitment to his late wife, Leong Lean Hoo, it is also a testament to their shared aspiration to contribute to the community.
