Top 4 Tea Plantations To See In Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands Tea Plantation

No trip to Cameron Highlands is complete without a visit to a tea plantation! Especially if it is your first time coming here.

And the most famous of these is the Sungai Palas plantation of BOH Tea Cameron Highlands. This is why the one-way road into the plantation is usually full of tourists.

In this guide, we’ll run through this popular tea plantation and its highlights. Along with other tea plantations that you can visit as an alternative.

Table of contents:

  • Kuala Terla Tea Plantation
  • BOH Sungai Palas Tea Plantation
  • Bharat Tea Plantations

Notes On Tea Plantations In Cameron Highlands

Large tea estates up in Cameron Highlands are primarily owned by BOH Plantations or Bharat.

The best tea plantation in Cameron Highlands is arguably the Sungei Palas estate owned by BOH as the drive into the valley is as lovely as the rolling plantations themselves.

Still, it’s good to have some alternatives to go to. This is in case you would rather not compete with other tourists cramming to get into the Sungai Palas estate!

The infamous jam along the one-way road can take  1-2 hours  from the main road on public holidays and weekends during peak hours (10am to 1pm).

1. Kuala Terla Tea Plantation

At this plantation, you can have a go at riding an ATV with Cameron Adventurous ATV & Safari through the tea plantation!

ATV Activity At Kuala Terla Tea Plantation

It’s especially interesting (but tiring) if you’ve never tried riding an ATV before! And you get a rewarding view all the way to the top of the hill as this plantation is no less beautiful than other tea plantations, albeit smaller.

However, the ATVs are not in perfect shape . Nor are safety precautions very convincing. So, if that is not agreeable with you, you can opt for the  jeep  ride instead!

Or you can just take a leisurely walk through the plantation.

  • 4×4 safari RM20 per pax
  • ATV safari RM80 (Single), RM90 (Double)
  • Air Swing RM10 per pax
  • The plantation is roughly 22km from Tanah Rata. Foreigners pay ~RM10-20 more than locals!
  • For inquiries, call +6013-534 2002

Plus, there is an on-site café on this plantation:

Cameron Valley Tea House KT (Kuala Terla)

Cameron Valley Tea House KT is one of 3 tea houses owned by Bharat. Not a bad place to stop enroute to Tanah Rata as the tea house overlooks the plantation.

It’s also known as the 3rd teahouse under Bharat. Or Cameron Valley Tea House 3.

Cameron Valley Tea House KT By Bharat

The tea  shop  here sells an assortment of locally produced tea. Their  masala tea  and  scones are good !

There are usually not that many people here, so  parking is a breeze  too. Just prepare yourself for the questionable number of flies.

PS: Flies are a common sight in Cameron Highlands, especially if the weather has been hot with regular rain (which is most of the year).

  • Opening Hours: 9 am–6 pm

  • Entrance Fees: RM4 to enter the garden

2. BOH Sungai Palas Tea Centre, Brinchang, Pahang

True that it’s not easy to get to:

But that doesn’t stop everyone from wanting to visit the impressive plantation in Brinchang (and the BOH Sungei Palas Tea Centre).

A Scenic Boardwalk Leads Up To BOH Sungai Palas Tea Centre

Some squeezing is necessary as the  narrow road  that winds into the estate does eventually reach a width that can only accommodate  1 car  at a time!

There may be staff to manage the traffic which eases the stressful situation a lot.

Once you get to the estate, you can leave your car at the  free and large visitor car park .

The Vast Tea Estate At Sungai Palas Belonging To BOH Plantations

There are stairs leading up to the visitor center that hangs over the plantation. The building also houses two seating lounges with a shared kitchen, a  small gallery  and of course, a  shop  for BOH tea products!

Note: If you have elderly in your group, you may want to drive straight up to the visitor center instead.

Quick  tours of the tea factory  by a staff member are available at regular intervals. Read more about BOH Sungai Palas Tea Plantation in this post .

The café (like the plantation) is open to visitors from 9am to 4:30pm every day except on Monday .

Expect lots of people regardless of whether it’s a weekend or a weekday!

Items on the menu are suitable for brunch, breakfast, or high tea .

Cake flavors to try are their banana cheesecake, strawberry cheesecake or their unconventional  nasi lemak  cheesecake!

3. Bharat Tea Plantations Sdn. Bhd. At Tanah Rata

Maybe you’ve come across a local tea brand called “ Cameron Valley Tea ”. This is in fact, the signature tea of Bharat Tea Plantations !

Cameron Valley Tea Plantation In Cameron Highlands

Their main estate by the main road from Ringlet to Tanah Rata has not one but two tea houses !

Have a cup of their  signature tea.  Or try their other  Indian-inspired tea blends  like their Masala Chai or Cardamom Tea.

Both tea houses have decks that look out over the valley and a shop where you can buy their various tea blends.

Different tea flavors you can get:

Food they serve:

  • Croissants and other pastries
  • Mango cheesecake
  • Carrot cake

From Cameron Valley Tea House 1, visitors can take a stroll down to a small park and waterfall in the valley.

There are not as many seats to go around at this open-air cafe as with Cameron Valley Tea House 2. But because of this, the dining atmosphere is quieter.

  • Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday: 9am to 6pm; Friday to Sunday: 8am to 7pm
  • Contact: +605-4851454
  • Entrance Fees: If you want to explore the estate, it costs RM4/ person to walk while the buggy costs RM12/ person .

Cameron Valley Tea House 2

There’s no doubt that the second tea house is  bigger  to comfortably fit more visitors! It can be noisy here with a lack of staff to clean the tables.

But visitors will appreciate the  larger parking lot .

4. BOH Tea Plantation (Fairlie Tea Plantation)

The Fairlie Tea Plantation (or  BOH Habu Tea Estate ) is the other lesser-known estate owned by BOH Plantations.

The Front Of The On Site Cafe At Boh Tea Estate Habu (Fairlie Boh Tea Plantation)

This plantation in  Habu  has scenic views too. Not exactly like the Sungai Palas estate, but still very green and with fewer crowds. The latter is a big plus point for us.

Plus, there are short hikes  (~10 minutes) to viewpoints if you don’t mind the lack of maintenance for the trails.

Simple refreshments and tea are available at their small  on-site café . You can also get tours of the tea factory at this plantation.

Cameron Highlands Tea Factory Tour

Fancy getting a tour of a tea factory? There are only two tea plantations in Cameron Highlands that currently offer such tours.

And these are both managed by BOH.

1. BOH Sungai Palas Tea Centre Tour

Free educational tours for the factory begin at 8:45am and occur every 30 minutes after. You don’t need to make any reservations beforehand to join the tours.

Signage For The Tours At BOH Sungai Palas Tea Centre

The only thing to note is that the tours may not be available on the day you go depending on factory operation .

We joined this tour recently and didn’t find it very interesting.  The factory is dimly lit so you cannot see much of the process close. And the explanations are only surface level.

2. BOH Tea Plantation Tour (Fairlie Tea Plantation)

Factory tours are available here too. They occur every 15 minutes and only take about 10 minutes to complete!

Tea Factory At Boh Tea Estate Habu (Fairlie Boh Tea Plantation)

The tour gives a brief introduction into how tea is collected and processed at the plantation and factory. The tours at Fairlie and Sungai Palas are not that much different.

Both are very short tours. And neither tour gives you the opportunity to view the full process from beginning to end.

After the short tour or while waiting for your tour to start, you can try a quick hike to a viewpoint at the plantation for beautiful scenery in a cool environment.

Note: If you have any breathing difficulties or weak stamina, you might want to skip the hike!

Getting To Cameron Highlands From Ipoh

Prepare yourself for the windy road and possible traffic jam up to Cameron Highlands.

Driving Up To Cameron Highlands

Locals will take any excuse (e.g. public holiday, hot weather, school holiday, etc) to come here for the weekends!

With moderate traffic, it can take  2 hours  from  Ipoh to Cameron Highlands .

Which means it’s possible to make a day trip to Cameron Highlands from Ipoh.  Hotels in Cameron Highlands  do tend to be pricier anyways!

Private Tours To Cameron Highlands From Ipoh

If you don’t plan to drive up there yourself, you can always take a private tour service ( RayTheTour ) from Ipoh up to Cameron Highlands!

Anyone who goes up to Cameron Highlands for the first time will be sure to include at least one tea plantation into their plans!

And since everyone has the same tea plantation on their mind (Sungai Palas BOH Tea Estate), it’s not a bad idea to plan a back-up.

Or you can wake up really early or reschedule your dates to avoid the crowds!

About Cameron Highlands

Located 200 kilometres to the north of Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands is a vast, hilly region famed for its tea plantations and cool climate.

With the area developed in the late 1920s – and the road opened in 1931 – the Cameron Highlands became a favourite of British colonial settlers in the 1930s, who came here to enjoy some relief from the sweltering temperatures elsewhere in the country.

The land was ideal for growing fresh vegetables and tea, but there were also many colonial buildings – a golf course, cottages, schools, a police office and administrative buildings.

So if you’re wondering what to do in Cameron Highlands in one day, there’s plenty!

The journey takes 3 hours 40 minutes to drive, while by public transport (bus) the journey can range between 4 and 6 hours (costing between RM 30-40).

Many people opt to take a day tour from KL , but personally I find this means spending the majority of your day travelling, and not enough enjoying the beauties of Cameron Highlands.

Cameron Highlands 1-Day Itinerary

There’s a lot to mark out on your Cameron Highlands tourist map!

If you join a Cameron Highlands full-day tour, these are the highlights included in the standard tour. If you’re visiting independently, these are the highlights that you shouldn’t miss on a trip to this lush, green slice of upland Malaysia.

Enjoy the views over the tea plantations

The first stop for most Cameron Highlands tours will be to explore a selection of tea plantations. Boh is the most famous, but there are also other tea plantations you can visit.

For example there’s also Bharat Tea Plantations, which is where you’ll find the perfectly located Cameron Valley Tea House 1 and 2 – the views from here are amazing.

Fairlie Tea Plantation is another good option, which offers tours and a place to sample tea on a beautiful backdrop.

All in all, the tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands make for a pretty place for a walk, enjoy the views and to take some pictures.

Have tea at Boh Tea Centre

The Boh Tea Centre is an ideal stop for tea lovers, and the most common stop on most tours. This beautifully located plantation offers a glimpse into not just the tea industry, but the history of the Cameron Highlands as a whole.

Located 5,000 feet above sea level, the conditions here – low temperatures, high rainfall, and acidic soil – make it ideal for tea growing.

You can spend time here wandering the tea garden, taking a peek inside the factory and enjoying the views over the plantations while you sip tea and have a bite to eat.

Plus it’s a great place to pick up souvenirs. Where better place to buy tea than straight from the source?

Hike in the Mossy Forest

Cameron Highlands is home to some prime highland forest, where tree ferns grow and moss hangs from old branches of ancient trees.

The mist and cool temperatures create the ideal environment for lichens, ferns, moss and orchids to grow. Interesting wildlife makes their home here, from snakes and frogs to various bird species and mammals.

Exploring the wondrous realm of this particular stretch of forest – dubbed Mossy Forest – has been made easy thanks to a boardwalk that has been constructed to wind through the trees.

The boardwalk stretches from the entrance out into the Mossy Forest, does a little loop at the end and then joins back with the same initial trail.

The whole walk takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour tops, and is a great way to get up close to this beautiful nature, but still walking in relative comfort on the boardwalk.

Visit the Butterfly Farm

Definitely on the Cameron Highlands attractions map is the popular Butterfly Farm. Comprising part of the Kea Farm, this is one of the oldest attractions in the region.

Set in a greenhouse, the Butterfly Farm occupies a sloping hillside and is filled not only with butterflies but other insects and animals too.  These include s nakes, leaf insects, huge beetles, and other animals and insects indigenous to Malaysia.

It’s open daily 8:30AM to 6PM. The entrance ticket usually isn’t included in your Cameron Highlands tour package, you have to pay it on the spot but admission is only RM 7.

Eat fresh strawberries at the Strawberry Farm

With more than one strawberry farm to its name, finding somewhere to pick fresh strawberries in the Cameron Highlands is relatively easy.

It’s the centre of Malaysian strawberry production, after all, with the cold climate providing good growing conditions for the sweet fruit.

One spot is Kok Lim Strawberry Farm (open 9AM to 5PM, it costs RM 30 to pick 500 grams of strawberries yourself).

Personally we didn’t pick strawberries, we just visited the Strawberry Farm and purchased some strawberry products from the shop. It was a bit of an odd stop on the tour, but still pretty interesting.

Visit a Local Market

A day trip to Cameron Highlands wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a colourful local market. The Pasar Pagi Kea Farm market is one of the biggest, while Raju Hill Strawberry Farm also has a decent vegetable market.

Here you can find all sorts of fruit and vegetables, as well as souvenirs. It’s a great place to learn about local culture. Here at night? Don’t miss Brinchang Night Market for edible delights.

Learn about local history at the Time Tunnel Museum

The Time Tunnel Museum is a must-visit museum that works as a time capsule filled with nostalgic memorabilia from Brinchang’s post-war past.

Think old TVs, barber chairs, children’s toys, and a recreation of a retro kopi tiam (traditional Malaysian eatery), among other things.

It’s the local museum in Cameron Highlands, and it’s a pretty interesting place to visit to learn about local history. It doesn’t go into a huge amount of detail, focusing more on showcasing memorabilia, but it’s still interesting.

Visit Sam Poh Temple

One interesting place at Cameron Highlands you should pay a visit to is Sam Poh Temple, a Chinese Buddhist temple that makes for a colourful stop to explore and snap pictures.

It’s a simple temple, but peaceful enough to make it worth visiting. It was the final stop of our Cameron Highlands day tour.

When you compare to other temples in Malaysia, like Batu Caves or Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Sam Poh isn’t as amazing, but it’s still an interesting cultural stop on an otherwise very nature focused tour.

Swim in a waterfall

Our tour didn’t include a waterfall stop, but they do usually feature on most Cameron Highlands day tours. Thanks to the hills and wet conditions, there are several waterfalls to check out.

One is Lata Iskandar Waterfall, which is a picturesque spot where you can dip your feet in the pool, and pick up a snack from a nearby vendor if you’re hungry.

There’s also the scenic and sizeable Robinson Falls, which features a 10-minute hike along a trail (not well marked) to get to it.

The waterfalls in Cameron Highlands might not be as impressive as Seven Wells Waterfalls in Langkawi, but they’re still very pretty.

How many days do you need in Cameron Highlands?

Despite the distance between the two, there are day trips available from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands .

These day trips allow you to see the main sights of the area in a whirlwind tour that means you won’t have to worry about getting to and from the highlands yourself.

However, as it’s quite a long drive from KL, I really would suggest spending at least 1 night in Cameron Highlands. This will give you more time to explore at a leisurely pace.

Once you’re there you can then do a full day tour starting directly from Cameron Highlands, maybe even staying another night before heading back. This is what we did as part of our wider Malaysia itinerary, and it worked well for us.

We spent the morning in Kuala Lumpur , arrived in Cameron Highlands in the afternoon, spent the next day doing a full-day tour of Cameron Highlands, and then left the next day (total 2 nights in Cameron Highlands).

It ultimately depends on how much time you have in Malaysia and what else you want to see, but I personally think one night in Cameron Highlands is the bare minimum to avoid spending hours in a minivan or bus.

What to pack for a day trip to Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands can have a very variable weather, so it’s important to pack accordingly.

Waterproof jacket – even if you’re visiting in dry season, you will need one of these! We even went as far as rain ponchos , as it was just too rainy when we were there.

Adapter – depending on where you come from you might need one of these to charge your electronics. I like to use an international one so that it can work for multiple destinations.

Power bank – if you’re out and about all day you don’t want your phone to die on you just as you’re about to snap a great photo of the beautiful temples in Kuala Lumpur!

Waterproof shoes – if it ends up raining, you don’t want to get your feet wet! It’s also a good idea to pack flip-flops or a change of shoes, that way you can get out of your wet shoes at the end of the day.

Do you need travel insurance for Cameron Highlands?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance .

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

Plus, as a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance !

Final thoughts on doing a day tour to Cameron Highlands

That’s a wrap on the ultimate Cameron Highlands day tour guide! Have you been to Cameron Highlands before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

Cameron Highlands is the perfect place to escape the humid tropical climate of the lowlands. You will have the best time here, exploring tea plantations, verdant forests, flowing waterfalls and unique viewpoints.

From here many travellers continue onwards to Taman Negara, a famous tropical rainforest, but personally we chose to travel on to Ipoh, Georgetown and Langkawi .

There are different towns in the Cameron Highlands areas, all with their own charm.

I hope you found my Cameron Highlands day tour guide useful! If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below.

Visit BOH Tea Plantation Centre in Cameron Highlands

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

One of the best things we did during our trip to Cameron Highlands was visiting the BOH Tea Plantation Centre. Walking among the endless fields of tea was just so special.

Before setting out on this day trip, we discussed whether we should join one of the many Cameron Highland Tours or just go by ourselves. Eventually, we decided to try and go by ourselves, and it honestly turned into such an adventurous day!

So in this blog post, we’ll show you every step of the way on how you can get to the BOH Tea Plantation by yourself, where to stay in Tanah Rata, what to see in the plantation, and much more!

About BOH Tea Plantation Centre

If you’ve read some of our other blog posts, then you’ll know that Glenn and I love to explore the biggest, oldest, and tallest things around the world. We’ve for example been to the Petronas Twin Towers , also known as the tallest twin towers in the world.

So when we learned that BOH Tea Plantation is the biggest tea plantation in Malaysia, we naturally had to pay a visit. We even heard from someone that it’s the biggest tea plantation in all of Southeast Asia!

After our visit, we can definitely confirm that BOH Tea Plantation is massive and a total must-visit in the Cameron Highlands region of Malaysia.

BOH Tea was founded by British Archibald Russell back in 1929, which also makes BOH the oldest tea plantation in Malaysia. YES! Two in one. BOH Tea is both the biggest and oldest tea plantation in all of Malaysia.

Today the CEO of BOH Tea is Caroline Russell, who is the granddaughter of the founder Archibald. So it looks like the BOH Tea Plantation has stayed in the Russell family.

You can go to BOH Tea’s Website if you want to know more about the plantation.

Plan your visit to BOH Tea Plantation Centre

In this section, we’ll go through all the necessary steps you need to take, so you can plan your own visit to the incredible BOH Tea Plantation Centre from Kuala Lumpur.

BOH Tea Plantation Opening Hours 2023

The Sungei Palas Tea Garden is open from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM every Tuesday until Sunday.

It’s closed on Mondays, so don’t visit BOH Tea on Monday if you want to taste the delicious tea, go on a factory tour, and see the Sungei Palas viewpoint.

BOH Tea Plantation Entrance Fee 2023

It’s completely free to walk around BOH Tea Plantation, so you don’t have to worry about paying an entrance fee.

From Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands

In order to visit BOH Tea Plantation Centre, you first have to get to the Cameron Highlands. The Cameron Highlands is an area in the state of Pahang in Malaysia, and it can easily be reached from Kuala Lumpur.

There are basically 2 ways to visit BOH Tea from Kuala Lumpur:

  • Book a day tour from Kuala Lumpur to BOH Tea Plantation
  • Book a bus from Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata and stay there

We opted for the second choice. So we took a 4-hour bus from Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata, which is a small town situated in the Cameron Highlands at 1440 meters above sea level. We booked a few nights in Tanah Rata, so we could explore what Cameron Highlands had to offer in our own slow pace.

I still remember how amazing it felt to step off that bus coming from humid and hot 30+ degrees Celsius in Kuala Lumpur and into cool and brisk 20 degrees in Tanah Rata. We can definitely recommend staying in Cameron Highlands for the cool weather and great hiking opportunities!

Where to stay in Tanah Rata

We booked 3 nights in a guesthouse in Tanah Rata.

Unfortunately, the guesthouse doesn’t exist anymore, so we cannot recommend it for you. Instead, we did some research on Booking.com and found some great accommodation options for you.

Great places to stay in Tanah Rata

  • A3 Oastel coLiving : Looking to stay in a cheap place and connect with other travellers? Check out this hostel in the center of Tanah Rata.
  • The Rustique Guest House : Want something cheap and local? Then check out this affordable guest house, which has all your basic needs covered and is run by a local in the middle of Tanah Rata.
  • Zenith Cameron : Want pure luxury? Stay in a 5-star hotel with a pool in Tanah Rata and enjoy a luxurious time in Cameron Highlands.

How to get from Tanah Rata to BOH Tea Centre

Last time we visited the BOH Tea Plantation Centre, we took the public bus from Tanah Rata, got off at the bus stop closest to BOH, and walked the remaining 3 kilometres to the plantation. This was seen as the budget travelers way to reach BOH Tea as we only spend 8 RM per person for a round trip with the bus.

Sadly, the public bus from Tanah Rata to BOH Tea Plantation doesn’t run anymore. So you’ll have to either drive yourself, go on a tour, or take a taxi. We’ll go through options steps below.

By car & motorbike

The easiest way to get from Tanah Rata to BOH Tea Plantation Centre is to drive yourself. You can either rent a car or a motorbike in the city, but please notice that the roads in Cameron Highlands can be narrow, steep, and very curvy.

So only choose this option if you’re a confident driver.

By group tour

Another way to visit BOH Tea is to join one of the many tours from Tanah Rata. We suggest that you just ask your accommodation where to find the best tour and choose this one.

The only downside is that you often have no say in how long you can stay at BOH Tea since you have to follow a group. The good thing about joining a tour is that you often get to see other things on the way like the strawberry farm.

The last way to visit BOH Tea Plantation is to get a taxi from Tanah Rata.

The taxis vary in price, but you can expect to pay in between 30-40 RM for a one-way trip to BOH Tea. The best way to get a good quote is to ask your accommodation if they know any taxi drivers that are willing to give you a good price.

Also check the App named Grab (it’s just like Uber), they should operate in the Cameron Highlands.

Going by taxi is especially a good idea if you are a few people that can split the cost.

Our experience at BOH Tea Plantation Centre

By now, you should be ready to go explore the BOH Tea Centre by yourself. However, before we finish this travel guide, we want to share our experience of the place.

Hiking from the bus to BOH Tea Plantation

2023 update: As mentioned earlier, we visited BOH Tea back when the public bus was still running. So we begin our story at the bus stop closest to the BOH Tea Centre.

It was easy to find the way from the bus stop to BOH Tea Centre. We saw a big sign that said “BOH” and just followed it up that road. It’s a one-way road so you would have to try really hard to get lost.

We had to share the road with the cars. However, the road ends at BOH which means that all the cars are full of tourists going to the plantation. They drive slow because they want to take in the beautiful scenery and the road also has many curves that slow down the cars.

So we honestly didn’t find it intimidating to walk on the road, but some people might not like sharing the road with cars. Luckily taxis are often driving by the bus stop, so it’s also possible to grab a taxi for the remaining kilometres to BOH.

Glenn and I absolutely love hiking, so we didn’t mind the walk to BOH. The first 1,5 kilometers were a bit boring but the last 1,5 kilometers were just stunning!

Walking from the bus to BOH tea, the first viewpoint

The scenery you get on the way is just spectacular! Imagine the biggest tea plantation in Malaysia, just stretching over the hills as far as you can see.

Since we were walking we could just stop whenever we wanted to take pictures. So we did.

the road to BOH tea plantation in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

Sungei Palas BOH Tea viewpoint & garden

After hiking the last 1,5 kilometers next to all the tea plants, we arrived at the Sungei Palas Tea Garden, which is where you’ll find an incredible viewpoint over the BOH Tea Plantation. Here you can buy a … wait for it … cup of tea. Surprise!

The viewpoint is so pretty, but it’s very crowded.

In our opinion, we had equally beautiful views on our hike from the bus stop. But since most people arrived at BOH and Sungei Palas in cars, it was their first view of the tea-covered hills of the day, which wasn’t seen from behind the window of a car.

Naturally, everybody wanted the best picture, so there was a bit of a pushy crowd at the viewpoint.

Get in line for a cup of tea

We’re not going to lie. This place is probably the most popular place in all of Cameron Highlands, so expect big crowds.

I got in a very long line to buy a cup of tea at the BOH Tea Centre where they have a small café. And it will probably be the last time in my life that I stand in such a long line for a cup of tea. My apologies to all tea lovers out there – this girl is a coffee drinker.

Anyways, Glenn got a table at the Sungei Palas Viewpoint Terrace while I grabbed our tea. Great teamwork.

Glenn had a classic Teh Tarik, which is a popular milk tea in Malaysia. I had a green tea. We both have to admit the tea was fantastic! So if you ever make it to BOH Tea Plantation Centre, make sure to get in the line for a cup of tea. It’s worth it.

Free Tea Factory Tour

After finishing our tea, we had a look around and saw that BOH offers a free tea factory tour. Who can say no to that?

We did the “tour”, which is a big word for a 5-minute walk through a few rooms. However, we did learn a lot in those 5 minutes about how tea is made, and since it’s free, we 100% recommend it!

Just know that for some reason you are not allowed to take pictures. They are very strict about it, and they constantly look at where your camera is placed on your body.

We unfortunately don’t have any pictures from us drinking tea, from Sungei Palas Viewpoint, or from the tea factory tour. Instead here are some pictures of the hard workers in the tea plantation. Respect!

Returning to Tanah Rata

This is the part of our day where things started to go wrong. We had had such an amazing day at the BOH Tea Plantation, so after a few hours, we decided it was time to head back to Tanah Rata.

First we did the 3-kilometre hike back to the bus stop. Easy peasy!

By the bus stop, we found some food and asked a local when the bus would leave towards Tanah Rata. We were told we about half an hour, which was plenty of time to have something to eat.

But then… Back at the bus stop with 10 minutes to spare, a friendly local told us that the bus had just left. So we would have to wait 60 minutes for the next one.

Luckily for us, just behind the bus stop, was some sort of carnival for kids. Being the big children we are, Glenn and I started to play all these games while we waited for the bus.

We actually had a lot of fun, and went back to the bus stop before the hour was up.

But then… Some other friendly local told us it had just passed.

How could we miss it again!

We had to wait yet another hour.

Looking back, I now see that we should have just grabbed a taxi back to Tanah Rata. We ended up spending the same amount of money in the carnival as a taxi would’ve cost us. We aren’t always the smartest people, but we do have fun!

After waiting around for 2+ hours, we finally got the bus back to Tanah Rata. While it’s said that the bus isn’t running anymore (2023 update), we do feel that it wasn’t very consistent, so maybe a taxi just is the better choice.

While we lost more than 2 hours on waiting, we still decided to go and celebrate a more or less successful day of exploring BOH Tea Plantation with a delicious garlic naan and tandoori chicken. Have you had Indian food in Malaysia? It’s amazing!

We really hope you enjoyed this blog post and how-to-guide about visiting BOH Tea Plantation Centre. We have the greatest memories from our day here and hope that we get to visit Cameron Highlands some time again in the future.

Let me know if you have any questions about how to get to BOH Tea Plantation by yourself – just leave a comment below. Thank you so much for reading and happy travels!

This is one of my favorite adventures you have written about! Sounds like a really cool day and an off the beaten path adventure. Loved it!!

Thanks B! It was a really great day. Make sure to visit if you make it to Malaysia 😊

A tea plantation?! I’m obsessed with tea. I would love to visit here also because of the amazing scenery.

Yes! Go visit it’s such a beautiful scenery 🙂

We loved our time in Tanah Rata! We joined the sunrise tour that took us to the BOH tea plantation and the Mossy forest. It is really lovely out there, isn’t it? We tried some tea and pastries at Sungai Palais and the views of the plantation were great!

A sunrise tour sounds amazing! I can imagine that’s a really beautiful sight 😊

Ahhhh I would LOVE to drink a cup of tea from those tea plantations. I’ve never been to this place but the views look amazing.

It was beautiful! And the tea just tasted 100 times better drinking it there 🙂

Thank you Cecilie for this post :). This expericence looks awesome!!! When I think about Asia the first picture that I have in mind in the rice terraces and the tea plantation. I visited earlier this year some rice terraces in the Philippines. And visiting a tea planation is on my bucket list, especially as I am a tea lover. I pinned your post in case one day we go to Cambodge. The free factory tea tour sounds really interesting to learn more about the planation. Is there a shop somewhere where you can buy some tea leaf to take back home ?

Hi Lauriane, yes there is a shop where you can buy all sorts of tea to take home 🙂 And yes I love these kind of landscapes (rice terraces included), you don’t get that where I’m from. Just stunning.

Visiting the tea plantation looks like such an incredible adventure! I’ve been there with unreliable bus timetables haha.

Haha it wouldn’t be Southeast Asia without those late buses. When we travel we often have more time than money, so I really don’t mind. It’s such a beautiful place 🙂

Yay for tea! This is definitely right up my alley! It sounds like such a cool place to visit! I love hiking so I’d be all for walking all over to explore too. :]

Great Farrah! Put it on your list, Cameron Highlands is definitely a place for you.

Tea fan here! I love drinking tea and would love to visit BOH tea plantation! With the gorgeous views from the side of the road, free admission, and a chance to go on a quick tour, I can’t wait to visit in the future. I’m due for a return trip to Malaysia once travel restrictions are lifted.

Sounds great Jackie! Cameron Highlands is just a great place to do some hiking and drink some tea! I loved it there 🙂 Enjoy your trip.

Very amazing 🙂

Who would have thought there are so many beautiful and wonderful places. What a beautiful world we live in and dont know it. Thanks for the great pictures and stories.

This post is so incredibly detailed! What a beautiful plantation, I miss Malaysia so much! Also the start of your video cracked me up!

I am really for writing in Spanish but only when I write in my native language I can express the emotion I feel when I read your blog, thanks a lot 🙏☺️

Dear Diana, thank you so much for your lovely words! ❤️ Comments like these keep me going. I love that you’re a solo traveller. Many people don’t realize that traveling alone can bring you the most experiences in terms of meeting new people and trying new things – always pushing ourselves to be more open. I hope you had a wonderful trip to Malaysia! Maybe we’ll meet on the road some day. Hugs from Cecilie 😊☀️

Hi! When did you do this trip? The few locals I ask about the bus just smile and say taxi only.

I’m hoping to do the route you did for BOH tea plantation 🙂

Hi Channy, thanks for your message!

It’s been 3 years since I took this bus, so maybe it’s not in service anymore – however, that’s hard for me to imagine since it’s the local bus that many people use on a daily basis. Try to ask in a different way. Notice there is no direct bus to the tea plantation – only to where the road towards the BOH tea plantation begins named “Jalan BOH” – try to ask for a bus to this road.

Let me know how it went 🙂 Best of luck, Cecilie

Hello, Thank you very much for your article Cecilie! I am currently in Tanah Rata and have been asking locals for the bus and since Covid the bus service has been completely abandoned. 🙂

Hi Camille, Thank you so much for sharing this information! I’ll make sure to update this guide so people don’t go looking for the bus anymore. A bit sad that it’s gone. Hope you still made it to the tea plantation and had a wonderful time in the Cameron Highlands 😊 All the best, Cecilie.

A visit to the Boh Tea plantations is an absolute MUST DO in the Cameron Highlands. We highly recommend a visit to this beautiful tea plantation and make sure you don’t miss the amazing cafe Terrace for tea and scones!

The tea plantation was established in 1929 by John Archibald Russell and is the oldest tea plantation in Malaysia. The Boh Tea Centre has a large tea plantation with beautiful green tea terraces on rolling hills located high in the Cameron Highlands. This is a beautiful spot for trekking and enjoying the stunning scenery.

Lots of things have changed at the Boh Tea plantations in the last few years. In this article we will give you the most up-to-date information on advice about visiting this attraction in the Cameron Highlands.

AND don’t miss these fantastic Cameron Highlands Resorts

Is it worth visiting the Boh plantations in the Cameron Highlands?

Boh Tea Centre plantations

Yes it is definitely worth visiting the Boh tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands. The Boh Tea Centre is the oldest tea plantation in Malaysia and is rich with history and heritage. The tea plantation was established in 1929 by John Archibald Russell. Despite Russells premature death due to tuberculosis and despite many troubles through the war era, this determined family were persistent and continued to operate this tea plantation.

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

A visit the the Boh Tea plantations is also a great place to LEARN. There is something very memorable and magical about visiting a place that tea is really grown. Get up close to the tea trees and see what a real tea leaf actually looks like. By the way – they look more like bushes than trees – being trimmed to keep them accessible to tea pickers.

Boh Tea is now a celebrated and prestigious Malaysian product, a testament to the grit and determination of many people who have protected and cared for this beautiful plantation. This is a peaceful place to see tea being grown, take in the beautiful scenery and enjoy drinking tea and eating decadent treats in a stunning location. It is worth being aware that the Boh Tea Centre can get very busy.

Where is the Boh Tea Centre located?

The Boh Tea Centre is located in the Cameron Highlands on the road that leads up to the mossy Forest. It is around a 30 – 40 minute drive from Tanah Rata.

How much does it cost to visit Boh in the Cameron Highlands?

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

It is free to visit the Boh Tea Centre in the Cameron Highlands. No tickets or permits are required to explore this beautiful area, walk in the plantations and to visit the Tea shop or cafe. BE AWARE that you are not allowed to fly a drone in this area. They are quite strict on this policy and in theory they  could confiscate your drone if you are found flying on the Boh Tea Plantations property.

What is the best way to get to the Boh Tea plantations ?

Don’t miss our step by step guide: How to travel from KL to the Cameron Highlands

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

If you have a car the best way to get to the Boh Tea Centre is to drive. Be aware that the traffic in the Cameron Highlands can be extremely busy during public holidays, school holidays and even on weekends. The last few miles of road is very narrow. However, this road also gets very busy. Fortunately there are often staff on this road directing traffic to help cars pass each other safely. Be prepared to be patient, wait and listen to the instructions of staff on the road. Due to the popularity of this location, we recommend arriving early. There is a large car park at the Boh Tea Centre. You can park for FREE here. Be aware that this car park can be full during particularly busy periods.

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

Another way to get to the Boh Tea plantations is to use a taxi. It is worth being aware that taxis can be quite expensive in the Cameron Highlands. Expect to pay around RM30 – RM50 each way for a taxi from Tanah Rata to the Boh Tea Centre. It is possible to use the Grab taxi app in the Cameron Highlands.

As an alternative, consider booking onto a tour that includes a visit to the Boh Tea Centre. There are lots of small tour operators located in Tanah rata. They will be able to arrange tours of the Cameron Highlands which normally include a visit to the Mossy Forest, the Boh plantations and a strawberry farm.

What can you do at the Boh Tea Centre in the Cameron Highlands?

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

A VISIT to the Boh Tea Centre was one of our FAVORITE activities in the Cameron Highlands.

The Boh Tea Centre in the Cameron Highlands you can walk around the beautiful plantations and take photos of the stunning scenery. You can either stop in a layby on the road above the plantations or drive down to the plantations and use the car park. From here you can find paths leading into the tea terraces.

Things to do in the Cameron Highlands

You can also visit the Boh Tea Centre cafe located on a beautiful Terrace overlooking the plantations. The beautiful cafe serves a wide range of hot drinks including a wide variety of locally-produced tea. They also serve a very tempting selection of sandwiches, pastries, cakes and of course scones with jam and cream. Most drinks and food range in price from around RM5 – RM15. Complete a paper slip (available at the cafe) with your order. Queue and grab your food. If possible

Boh Tea Centre

There is also a gift shop located at the Boh Tea Centre in the Cameron Highlands. They sell a wide range of tea products and branded merchandise. AND FINALLY – make sure you don’t miss the amazing Boh Tea Factory.

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

The tea factory is FREE to visit and is a GREAT place to learn about tea production – from LEAF to CUP. They have a range of exhibits and information to help you understand the intricacies, love and care that go into making the perfect cuppa.

What are the best times to visit the Boh Tea Centre?

The Boh Tea Centre is a very popular attraction in the Cameron Highlands. This spot can get extremely busy especially during public holidays.

We recommend visiting during weekdays. Avoid weekends, public holidays and school holidays if possible. We also recommend visiting the Boh Tea Centre early in the morning. Aim to arrive by 8:30 a.m. if possible.

Where are the best places to stay in the Cameron Highlands ?

Cameron Highlands mossy forest

It is NOT possible to stay on the Boh Tea Plantations themselves – there is no accommodation here.

The BEST area to stay to visit the Boh Tea Centre is the MAIN TOWN which is called Tanah Rata. This town has lots of cafes, restaurants, convenience stores and this is the location of the main bus station in the Cameron Highlands. ALSO you can easily book tours in Tanah Rata from lots of little tour offices in town. HERE are some excellent places to stay in the Cameron Highlands:

BOH Tea Plantation is a Gorgeous Spot in the Cameron Highlands

I never fancied myself to be a tea drinker; however, one of my top destinations in visiting Malaysia had always been the famous rolling tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands.

The same region, also famous for their bountiful strawberry harvest, is a bit of an anomaly in South East Asia for its ability to produce such great crops on a nearly continual basis throughout the year.

In being located almost one mile above sea level, the Cameron Highlands are removed from the heat that the nearby cities are accustomed to seeing.

With daily rain showers and cooler temperatures, crops flourish, and the BOH Tea Plantation, Malaysia's largest with over 5 square miles of planted tea, is the shining gem that foreigners and Malays alike go out of their way to see. Locals visit here to stock up on tasty teas and tourists flock here to try out the exotic drinks.

Due to the location of the plantation, many tourists stay is nearby cities and then take buses to tour the crops. For travelers staying in Penang hotels or any nearby city can often find brochures about the plantation in the hotel’s lobby. It’s a good idea to check out pamphlets and get background information about the plantation before you go.

This way you will have a better idea about the teas you would like to try.

A Visit to the BOH Tea Plantation is a Must

If picturing 5 square miles of planet tea is hard enough, the facts that BOH publish on their website are even more surprising.  At that size, the plantations are able to harvest 4 million kilograms of tea each year, which is roughly 5.5 million cups of tea per day.

Surely this company would have to have one variety that I would enjoy?

Getting to the plantation is not the easiest of activities, as due to its size the main entrance is located quite far out of the town of Tanah Rata which required me to jump in a cab for a quick ride up to the plantation.

Boh Tea Plantation, Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

The first view you get of the fields is nothing short of jaw-dropping, as the tea quite literally covers every inch of usable space and appears form fitting on all the rolling hills as far as you can see, and then some.  The first view is just the beginning.

A 10-minute drive down a twisty path, up and down hills, and seemingly going on forever ended at the visitors center and centerpiece of the Boh Tea Plantation.

Before jumping in for some samples, it was time to take a self-guided walking tour of the facilities and look at the equipment that is used to prepare the tea, much to the delight of my inner engineer.

Gorgeous blue flower infront of tea plantations in Malaysia

Unfortunately, I did not travel to see equipment and quickly went to the gift shop and cafe to try a cup of their famous tea.  I ended up going with one of their fruit flavor teas (Strawberry Raspberry) even though it does not contain a single ounce of real tea leaves.

With a view of the plantation as my backdrop, it didn't even bother me that I was not sampling the beauty that I was looking at, as my tea stock increased to several hundred packets of both regular and fruit-flavored tea after a trip to their gift shop.

One hundred photos later and ample money spent on tea gifts for others and extra for myself, I began to hike up the windy trail that I drove in on to get up close and personal with the tea and to take some amazing photos.

45 minutes later and I only ended up 2/3rds of the way through the path to the main road, not knowing what I would do after that to get back to town.

Rolling hills full of tea in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia

I had been told on several occasions that hitch-hiking is a perfectly acceptable form of transportation in the Cameron Highlands, but I never thought I'd see myself doing it.

Shortly after realizing how far I still had to go I heard the familiar beep beep of a motorbike and a local kid offered me a ride to the main road.  Why not?

I knew all was well when the kid did not even ask for a single ringgit for the lift, and I began my trek down the main road to catch up to a public bus, only to again be greeted with the familiar sound of a car honk and offer for a ride from a new friend back to Tanah Rata.

Came across this when a Mexican friend of mine asked where to go. It’s definitely a great way to explore this beautiful tea plantation in my lovely country.

Definitely go! There is no place better to enjoy a great cup of tea than at an actual plantation. Gorgeous

Wow, I would definitely want to visit this place as I love the view and am a big tea drinker!

I’m a massive tea drinker and never miss the opportunity to visit a tea plantation. This looks lovely. I just love the small and the post tour tea tasting session!

A hypnotizing oasis full of vibrant green tea fields and mossy cloud forests awaits you in the mountainous Cameron Highlands. Enjoy a soothing cup of freshly brewed tea in between excursions to find exotic flora and fauna along dense hiking trails.

During the 19th Century, the British Empire established a strong colonial presence in Malaysia, especially in the port cities of George Town and Singapore . Surveyors soon discovered the potential of the elevated fertile plateau to grow tea, vegetables, flowers, and strawberries.

Once road construction finished in 1931, the Cameron Highlands transformed from an isolated area to a delightful destination to break away from the heat of nearby cities. The establishment of elaborate mansions, farms, rustic cottages, ranches, and a six-hole golf course resulted in an influx of tourists and laborers.

After Malaysia gained its independence in 1957, the Cameron Highlands continued to prosper with bountiful crop yields. Presently, the main towns of Tanah Rata , Brinchang , and Ringlet have visitors all year round due to the family-friendly attractions, cool weather, abundant restaurants, and spacious resorts.

Where to Stay

Brad and I decided to base ourselves in Tanah Rata due to its central location, proximity to the trailheads, and variety of restaurants. If possible, try to visit the Cameron Highlands during the week to avoid hectic traffic jams and overwhelming crowds.

We booked an affordable room for two nights at Father's Guesthouse . The comfy queen-sized bed, impeccably clean bathroom, and friendly staff were top-notch! The outdoor shared kitchen was great for preparing coffee and small meals. The hotel has a peaceful atmosphere since its tucked away from the main road.

BOH Tea Plantation

Rows of cascading emerald tea shrubs as far as the eye can see are the main attraction at BOH Tea Plantation . Misty clouds dance with rays of golden sunshine creating a spectacular landscape. The covered balcony at Sungei Palas Tea Garden is the best spot to soak up the views!

Sample a few varieties of tea and baked goods as you admire the scenery. Opt for a strawberry pastry or scrumptious chicken pot pie depending on your appetite. Afterwards, take a self-guided tour through the tea factory to understand the harvesting and manufacturing process. The gift shop has plenty of box teas available for purchase.

The easiest way to reach BOH Tea Plantation is via Grab (similar to Uber/Lyft). Arrive early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds. Traffic along the narrow road leading to the main entrance can be a headache during peak hours. Admission is free. If you only have time to visit one tea plantation in the Cameron Highlands, choose Malaysia's largest tea producer!

Rafflesia Private Tour

Behold the largest flower species in the WORLD! Southeast Asia is home to the Rafflesia ; a genus of parasitic plants without roots, leaves, or stems. These brilliant red blooms typically smell like rotting flesh to attract insects, such as flies, to aid in pollen transfer from male to female flowers.

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

While Brad and I were walking near our hotel, we bumped into a friendly Australian couple who raved about a private tour they took which included a trek in the jungle to see a Rafflesia . We immediately contacted their local guide, Carl (WhatsApp +60 12 998 4229), who confirmed the same Rafflesia was still alive. Blooms only last for five days, which makes the rare encounter even more special.

After an hour drive and 20-minute hike in the rainforest, we reached the breathtakingly bizarre flower. The spiky center, interior white spots, and textured petals were magnificent! Wear long sleeves and pants to protect yourself against pesky bugs and rough foliage. Our private tour with Carl cost 300 MYR ($64 USD) and was worth every penny. Don't miss out on this bucket list opportunity!

Hiking Trails

Nature lovers will be drawn to the numerous hiking trails of the Cameron Highlands open between February 1st-October 31st. A permit, obtained at the Forestry Office for 10 MYR ($2 USD), is required to enter the reserve. According to a sign we noticed, visitors can be fined up to 50,000 MYR ($10,630 USD) or imprisoned if caught without a permit.

Brad and I initially wanted to complete Trail #10 to the Cameron Valley Tea Houses, but couldn't due to search and rescue efforts to find a missing hiker. Some of the trails are overgrown with infrequent markers. Explore with another person if possible and bring plenty of supplies, including water, snacks, insect repellent, and rain gear. Inform your accommodations of your whereabouts to be on the safe side.

We began our day in the woods with a leisurely walk along Trail #4. The entrance is next to a bridge on the east side of Century Pines Resort . Brad observed a remarkable caecilian (snake-shaped/worm-like amphibian) probing the muddy streambed nearby Parit Falls . While we racked our brains over the weird critter, I discovered a bright green frog seeking shelter within some tangled roots.

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

After purchasing our permits, we made our way through the narrow and overgrown entrance of Trail #6 next to Sungai Pauh Campground . Eventually, the path became less claustrophobic and featured steep inclines, twisty turns, and mossy branches. Singing birds and pretty butterflies kept us company in the invigorating cloud forest.

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

Following our lunch break at the Rain Shelter Cross Junction , Brad and I made our way back to Tanah Rata via Trail #5 . High above in the lush canopy, we noticed a stealthy civet with spotted fur and a white-tipped tail! The extraordinary encounter near the end of our day in the rainforest brought happy tears to my eyes.

Overall, the three trails took us approximately 4.5 hours to complete at a relaxed pace. Although cell coverage is reliable, download Maps.me to ensure accurate navigation. We wrapped up our expedition at the KoMARDI Hotel . Please take out what you take in and leave no trace, including biodegradable food which can harm wildlife.

Cameron Valley Tea Houses

Looking to get up close and personal to waist-high tea shrubs? Head to the Cameron Valley Tea Houses! Start with an afternoon visit to Cameron Valley Tea House #2 to sip herbal/fruit tea before wandering through the manicured tea fields to reach Cameron Valley Tea House #1 .

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

To celebrate our fantastic day in the wilderness, Brad and I treated ourselves to a couple of buttery scones with fresh strawberry jam and cream. We shared a pot of comforting tea while resting our tired legs. The hydrating elixir boosted our energy levels enough to embark on the dirt trails connecting the two tea houses. Open-air shuttles are also available if you don't want to walk. Purchase a wristband for 4 MYR ($0.85 USD) to access the property.

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

The Cameron Valley Tea Houses allow visitors to partially enter the tea fields at their own risk. Beware of venomous snakes and scorpions. The photo opportunities are a huge draw for travelers. Keep in mind you'll likely share the area with families, countless tour groups, and plantation workers.

tea plantation tour cameron highlands

The Cameron Highlands is about midway between George Town and Kuala Lumpur . Malaysia's public transportation system is a breeze to navigate. Easy-to-follow bus schedules with affordable tickets take the stress out of planning your trip.

Brad and I combined our two-day getaway in Ipoh with our two-day adventure in the Cameron Highlands. We purchased bus tickets with CS Travel and Tours online via redBus from the Ipoh Amanjaya station to the Tanah Rata station . The journey took approximately 2.5 hours. Make reservations in advance to guarantee a seat, especially on weekends and around public holidays.

During the first 30 minutes of our bus ride back to George Town, we experienced some nauseating switchbacks. Consider eating a light meal and bringing medication if you're prone to motion sickness. We knew it was going to be a bumpy journey once the driver handed out plastic puke bags!

Final Thoughts

There are a few harsh realities to be aware of in the Cameron Highlands. It's a balancing act which I don't intend to sugarcoat!

Honestly, a lot of things to do in the towns are worth avoiding, such as the hydroponic strawberry farms, petting zoos, bee farms, and museums. Skip the cheesy tourist traps and prioritize the natural beauty.

The juxtaposition of the pristine environment against hundreds of white plastic tubular greenhouses can be disheartening. Expanding farmland, construction projects, and traffic congestion are taking a toll in the Cameron Highlands. Brad and I also observed garbage floating in the streams. We tried to have a positive impact on the area by supporting ecotourism and picking up trash along the hiking trails.

The Cameron Highlands is a worthwhile destination despite its shortcomings. Sitting next to a tropical Rafflesia , exploring vast cloud forests, and drinking cups of delicious tea were amazing highlights I would've been sad to miss during my travels in Malaysia!

You can easily spend days hiking, drinking tea, eating, and reading a good book. It’s the perfect place to chill out and slow down. I loved my time here.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in the Cameron Highlands

A red bridge crossing a river in the jungles of Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

1. Tour the tea plantations

The Cameron Highlands is Malaysia’s tea-producing center due to its high altitude and cool climate. Visit one of the plantations and enjoy some tea and scones while admiring the lush tea fields. The two most popular plantations are the BOH Tea Plantation and Cameron Bharat Tea Estate.

2. Go jungle trekking

There are 14 trekking routes heading out from the town of Tanah Rata. Most of the hikes lead to waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. If you want to do one of the more challenging routes, you’re required to hire a guide and obtain a permit. Frequent rain results in trail closures, so research and trails before you go.

3. Visit Tanah Rata

Tanah Rata is the largest and most developed town of the Cameron Highlands. But it’s not huge — the town center consists of only one street! It’s also the center of the Highland’s nightlife, which ends around midnight (it’s never very rowdy here).

4. Tour Sam Poh Temple

Built in 1972, the Sam Poh Temple is the fourth-largest temple in Malaysia and provides an arresting view against its lush jungle backdrop. The temple sits in the hills overlooking Brinchang and offers a panoramic view of town. Inside you’ll find statues of Buddha, Zhenghe, and other deities.

5. Climb Gunung Brinchang

Gunung Brinchang is one of the most beautiful mountains in the country due to its jungle trails and viewpoints over the highlands. At 2,000 meters high (6,560 feet), the main trail to the top starts at the north side of Brinchang town and takes about two hours total. If you’re unable to hike, you can also drive to the top.

Other Things to See and Do in the Cameron Highlands

1. visit a farm.

The Cameron Highlands has tons of farms: bee apiaries, rose farms, cactus farms, strawberry farms, lavender farms, and more. These farms usually offer free tours with the ability to purchase products afterward. Cactus Valley has some giant cacti on display that are up to 60 years old, while Lavender Garden lets you try lavender ice cream. At Kok Lim Strawberry Farm, you can pick your own berries and then swing by the cafe to taste their strawberry ice cream, juice, and jam. Admission varies per farm, costing upwards of 10 MYR per person.

2. Find tranquility at Robinson Waterfalls

By following jungle trail number nine, you’ll end up at Robinson Waterfalls after a quick 10-minute walk. These falls are a very serene and peaceful way to fill a relaxed afternoon, especially if you are there in the wet season (November-March) when the waterfalls are at their biggest. Pack a lunch, bring a book, and lounge the day away.

3. Take in beauty at the Flower Festival

The Highlands are Malaysia’s leading producer of flowers and home to the annual flower festival every August and September. Aside from displaying bright blossoms and other plants that grow in the area, the festival includes flower parades and flower competitions where growers get to show off their skills. If you’re not in town during the festival, check out the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), an agro-technology park divided into several different gardens, including a stunning Orchid Garden and a Rose Garden. Several of the Flower Festival’s events take place here as well. Admission is 6 MYR.

4. Visit the Pasar Malam Night Market (Brinchang Night Market)

Located in the Golden Hills area of Tanah Rata, The Pasar Malam Night Market (also known as the Brinchang Night Market) occurs Friday and Saturday evenings from 5pm-11pm. Shop from over 150 local vendors and take your pick of affordable souvenirs or other treats like strawberries and tea. This is a nice way to end a day of adventure as you grab some traditional Malay street food (try the satay, a tasty grilled meat) and peruse the local wares. A lot of vendors sell the same souvenirs so shop around for the best prices before buying.

5. Wander the Pasar Pagi Morning Market

Roll out of bed after spending the night at the Pasar Malam Night Market and head straight to the Pasar Pagi Morning Market for breakfast. It’s located in KEA Farm Town and is open from 8am-3pm every day. There are mostly farm goods here, including fresh fruit and veggies, but you’ll also find some hawkers selling street food, clothing, and souvenirs. Flower vendors also come here to show off their goods.

6. Hike the Mossy Forest

Hire an experienced guide and explore the lush and thriving Mossy Forest, where the high altitude and cool temperatures create a unique environment full of tropical ferns, plants, and trees. On the Boardwalk, keep an eye out for bright-green Rajah Brookes butterflies, brightly plumed birds, and monkeys. Due to weather and trail conditions, it may be muddy and slippery, so pack a rain poncho and comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots. You can also take a taxi to the BOH Tea Plantation and walk to the trail, but a guide is recommended for this experience so that you can learn all about the area’s unique environment. Admission to the Boardwalk is 30 MYR. Eco Cameron Tours offers 4-hour group tours for 80 MYR per person.

7. Visit the Time Tunnel

The Time Tunnel is a (very small) museum featuring vintage items from throughout the history of the Cameron Highlands. A visit won’t take up much of your time, but you’ll get to see things like old-fashioned signs, postcards, photography, and even a replica of an old Malaysian coffee shop. It’s kitschy but makes for a fun way to spend an hour or two. Tickets are 6 MYR.

8. Hunt for Rafflesia flowers

Did you know that the Cameron Highlands are home to the world’s largest flower, the Rafflesia? It’s technically a parasitic plant and is sometimes known as a “corpse flower” due to its corpse-like odor. Still, their giant red blooms are impressive to see in person. They’re classified as endangered, so you’ll need to arrange a tour with a company like Eco Cameron to see them in bloom in the Blue Valley. Tours are private, so prices depend on the size of your group. Since blooms are unpredictable (and rare), contact the tour operator to see if any tours are going ahead.

9. Tour the Mah Meri Art Gallery

This museum and art gallery in Tanah Rata showcases the intricate artwork of the indigenous Mah Meri people of Malaysia’s Carey Island. It includes incredibly detailed wood carvings like statues and sculptures made of mangrove hardwood, though the masks are the most impressive, featuring lifelike animistic characters. Admission is 37 MYR.

10. Eat steamboat

Steamboat, also known as hot pot, is very popular in the Cameron Highlands and a definite must when in the area. This communal meal consists of a boiling pot of hot broth in which you cook various ingredients like meat, tofu, fresh vegetables, fish balls, noodles, and more. The traditional method, still widely used in the region, is cooking over a charcoal grill to infuse the food with more flavor. It’s a great way to warm up in chilly mountain evenings! There are many steamboat restaurants in the area, but my favorite is Cameron Organic Produce Steamboat Restaurant, where a steamboat meal for two is 60 MYR.

The Cameron Highlands Travel Costs

Stunning view of the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia and its lush, rolling green hills

Hostel prices – Hostels start around 35 MYR per night for a dorm with 10 or more beds. Dorms with 4-6 beds cost 85-100 MYR per night while a private double room starts at 135 MYR. Free Wi-Fi is standard and free breakfast is common. Most hostels also have a kitchen for those looking to cook their own food. Prices are consistent year-round, but you may have to pay upwards of 20 MYR more per night on the weekends.

There are many campgrounds in the area for those traveling with a tent. Prices are generally 10-35 MYR for a basic plot, with a surcharge of 5-10 MYR per person per night. Campgrounds usually have hot showers, toilets, and BBQ pits. The more expensive ones (50-60 MYR per night) have Wi-Fi.

Budget hotel prices – Basic guesthouses cost around 65-90 MYR per night and generally come with a fan (no A/C), shared bathroom, and shared kitchen facilities. Hotels cost 110-180 MYR for a basic double room with A/C and free Wi-Fi. Most hotels in this range do not offer free breakfast.

Airbnb is available in the area, with prices for private rooms starting at 95-110 MYR per night. For an entire home/apartment, prices begin at 150-200 MYR per night.

Check with your accommodation beforehand to see what your transportation options are for getting to your hostel/hotel. Since everything is so spread out in the Highlands, you may have to hire a taxi to get you there.

Average cost of food – Malaysian cuisine takes influences from China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore. Rice or noodles are the basis of most dishes, and seafood and fish feature prominently, as do chicken and beef, which are usually halal as Islam is the most widely practiced religion in the country. Commonly used vegetables include cabbage, bean sprouts, lotus root, sweet potatoes, taro, and long beans.

The unofficial national dish is nasi lemak , fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and flavored with pandan leaf and accompanied by different sides, usually served for breakfast. Other popular Malaysian dishes include roti canai (a sweet or savory flatbread), ikan bakar laksa (spicy noodle soup), and many different regional fried noodle and fried rice dishes.

You can find plenty of street food options in the Cameron Highlands for less than 6 MYR, especially at the markets. A meal at a Malay restaurant costs around 10-15 MYR while a takeaway meal from a Chinese restaurant is 8-10 MYR. A combo meal at a fast-food restaurant is 10-12 MYR.

For a meal at a mid-range restaurant, expect to pay around 30 MYR for one course.

While alcohol is often frowned upon, you can still buy beer out at the bar, usually for around 13-15 MYR. When you can find them, a glass of wine or cocktail is 17 MYR. Local tea is 3 MYR, while a cappuccino is around 6 MYR.

While here, definitely try a steamboat (hot pot). My go-to is Organic Produce Steamboat Restaurant, which uses certified organic vegetables from their garden. The traditional charcoal stoves used give the food more flavor. The food is delicious and affordable, with a vegetarian set for two people and Chinese tea costing about 55-65 MYR. The restaurant fills up quickly during dinner time so get there early.

Western meals are a bit more expensive, though not by too much. Breakfast costs 10-17 MYR, pizza costs 15-17 MYR, and a pasta dish is 20 MYR. Due to the British colonial influence on the area, there are a number of restaurants and teahouses offering British fare, such as fish and chips (which generally costs 25-30 MYR).

For a week’s worth of groceries, expect to spend between 100-200 MYR for basic staples like rice, produce, and some meat or fish. Stick to local staples, as imported items like wine or cheese will blow your budget in no time. However, with food so cheap, it’s better to eat out at the local markets than try to cook for yourself.

Backpacking the Cameron Highlands Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking the Cameron Highlands, expect to spend about 100 MYR per day. This budget covers staying in a hostel dorm, eating cheap street food and cooking, limiting your drinking, taking the bus or cycling to get around, and doing mostly free activities like hiking.

A mid-range budget of 275 MYR per day covers a private Airbnb or hostel room, eating out at cheap street stalls and enjoying the occasional sit-down meal, having a few drinks, taking some taxis to get around, and doing more paid activities like guided hikes and plantation tours.

On a “luxury” budget of 510 MYR or more per day, you can stay at a hotel, rent a car or take more taxis, drink more, eat wherever you want, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get an idea of how much you need to budget daily. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in MYR.

The Cameron Highlands Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

A little goes a long way in Malaysia and this area is no different. That said, here are some extra ways you can save money in the Cameron Highlands if you’re on a super tight budget:

  • Camp – The Cameron Highlands are pretty safe, so if you’re feeling adventurous, this is a good way to save on accommodation. There are a lot of campsites in the area but Sungai Pauh Campsite is the cheapest, charging 10 MYR per person per night.
  • Cycle – For a few ringgit per day, you can rent a bike from most hotels. Although local transportation is super cheap, this is an excellent way to see the area and have a truly local experience.
  • Visit during the week – Weekends here are busy so visit during the week to beat the crowds and find cheaper accommodation deals.
  • Enjoy the free hikes – Most of the trails don’t require a guide so get out and enjoy the abundant free nature here.

Where to Stay in the Cameron Highlands

Looking for budget-friendly accommodation? Here are some of my favorite places to stay in the Cameron Highlands:

  • Traveller Bunker Hostel
  • Westwood Highland
  • De’Native Guest House
  • Hikers Sleep Port

How to Get Around the Cameron Highlands

Stunning view of the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia and its lush, rolling green hills with towns in the foreground

Tours – The Cameron Highlands have limited transportation options so the easiest way to see the sights is to take a tour. There are private and group tours that usually combine a visit to a tea plantation, a hike in the moss forest, and visiting local farms. Your hostel or hotel can easily help you get set up based on what you want to do and how long you want to go.

Bus – Public transportation is extremely affordable at 1.50 MYR per ride, but it’s often unreliable. A shuttle bus from Tanah Rata to the tea plantations and most attractions costs under 5 MYR. The 3.5-hour bus from the Highlands to Kuala Lumpur costs 22-35 MYR.

Motorbike – You can rent a motorbike for around 50-60 MYR per day. Just be aware that these are windy mountain roads, often slick with mist and rain, so only rent a motorbike if you’re a confident driver. Traffic flows on the left.

Taxi – Taxis are generally unmetered, with most drivers offering fixed rates to main attractions. However, they’re still a very affordable option. A taxi from Tanah Rata to the BOH Tea Plantation costs around 65 MYR roundtrip. Taxi drivers usually have a fixed rate of 75 MYR for a three-hour tour that takes you to three attractions of your choice, which is usually the most affordable and flexible option.

Hitchhike – It is common for people to hitchhike in the Cameron Highlands. Waits are usually not long and many drivers speak English. For specific tips and information, check out HitchWiki .

When to Go to the Cameron Highlands

The best time to visit is between April and September. During those months it doesn’t rain as often and the temperature ranges between 25°C (77°F) during the day and 16°C (60°F) at night.

The monsoon season is November-February, though it is quite rainy even in the drier seasons.

If you are visiting for the jungle treks and hiking trails, I recommend traveling during the dry season, between March to June. You’ll have better weather and the trails will actually be useable.

Cameron Highlands is often jam-packed on weekends, especially during the dry season. You may encounter bigger crowds as well as slight price increases on tourist attractions. When planning your trip, it’s important to check for national holidays and long weekends since it can significantly change your experience if things are shut down.

How to Stay Safe in the Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is an incredibly safe place to backpack and travel – even if you’re traveling solo and even as a solo female traveler.

However, robberies have happened on some of the hiking trails, so ask your hotel for an update and hire a local guide if necessary. As usual, watch your belongings and leave your valuables in a safe place when hiking.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never walk home alone at night, never accept drinks from strangers, etc.).

There aren’t many travel scams in the region, but if you’re worried about getting ripped off you can read about common travel scams to avoid here .

This isn’t a party area, but as an extra word of caution, avoid using drugs. They are illegal in Malaysia and the penalties are stiff.

Your biggest challenge will likely be dealing with nature and weather. Frequent rain results in trail closures. Research the weather and trails before planning your trip. Most importantly, bring rain gear and hiking boots so that you’re prepared. Most of the accessible hikes lead to waterfalls and scenic views. If you want a more challenging trek, you’re required to hire a guide and obtain a permit.

Additionally, avoid tap water as it’s unsafe to drink and might get you sick.

If you experience an emergency, dial 999 for assistance.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

The Cameron Highlands Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Skyscanner – Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine. They search small websites and budget airlines that larger search sites tend to miss. They are hands down the number one place to start.
  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Agoda – Other than Hostelworld, Agoda is the best hotel accommodation site for Asia.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.

Cameron Highlands: Three days at the teaplantations of Malaysia

A very different side of Malaysia can be found in the Cameron Highlands. No beaches, skyscrapers or scorching heat here. No, the Cameron Highlands are most reminiscent of the English countryside, with rolling green hills, a cooler climate and houses built in the English style. In this travel guide, we will tell you why you should go to the Cameron Highlands and what you can do and see here on a three-day visit!

Three days in the Cameron Highlands!

We are on the bus from Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata, a central city in the Cameron Highlands. Slowly we see the landscape change: Palm trees give way to pine trees; skyscrapers to white houses, and hectic city life to peaceful fields full of tea. As soon as we get off the bus we feel a pleasant temperature, the high humidity and stifling heat are gone. A cool breeze and not much later a fresh rain shower ensure that the landscape is so green here.

The following days we make beautiful hikes, visit various tea plantations, eat scones and we drink fresh strawberry juice. We are not the only tourists, by the way, many local Malaysians spend a long weekend in the Cameron Highlands to experience colder temperatures and enjoy the scenery as well. There are more than enough facilities for tourists. Still, as soon as we go into nature, it doesn’t feel that touristy at all. Most (Malaysian) tourists do everything in groups and participate in organized tours. Very different from the activities we undertake: hiking in the jungle (without a guide) and exploring on a scooter the highlands of the Cameron Highlands ourselves.

How many days do spend in the Cameron Highlands?

We stay three nights in the Cameron Highlands. There is more than enough to do and we travel at a leisurely pace. However, if you have less time, then two nights is certainly enough time to discover the highlights of this place. You can do the following activities for the most part in two (full) days, but it is based on a three-night stay in the Cameron Highlands.

Where do you stay in the Cameron Highlands?

The Cameron Highlands are spread over an area as large as Singapore. However, most activities can be done in a small area around the three cities of Ringlet , Tanah Rata and Brinchang . Of these three, I prefer Tanah Rata because most of the hikes start from here and you have the best facilities here too (including the bus terminal). Tanah Rata really has more atmosphere and lively vibe than the other two villages. Keep in mind, all three villages are not necessarily beautiful, you are really here for the area.

Where do you sleep in the Cameron Highlands?

We stayed in Tanah Rata ourselves and I can certainly recommend this location to you too. You will find many hotels in Tanah Rata, but not all hotels are equally good. We visited different accommodations in different price ranges and can heartily recommend the hostel, B&B and luxury hotel below.

Traveller Bunker €

One of the nicest hostels we have ever slept in! With a movie room, cosy public areas and a nice kitchen to prepare your own food. Since the beds have curtains, there is a lot of privacy and each bed has two sockets, a fan and a large locker to put your bags in. You sleep here from 11 euros per night for two people (shared room).

Gerards Place €€

This guesthouse is just outside the centre of Tanah Rata, (about a 10-minute walk), but has a nice view of the hills and nice double rooms. You share the bathroom, just like the living room and kitchen where you will find a fridge, microwave and kettle. You sleep here from 19 euros per night (two people, shared bathroom).

Cameron Highlands Resort €€€

Ready for a night of sleep in an old colonial building? Then stay at this four-star resort just outside Tanah Rata. Not only is the building beautiful, the rooms are also nicely decorated. Also nice: there are activities such as a picnic in the tea plantation. You sleep here from 127 euros per night (two people) including a tasty breakfast.

The seven best activities for three days in the Cameron Highlands

There is more than enough to see and do in the Cameron Highlands. Below you will find seven fun things to do in the surroundings of Tanah Rata and Brinchang. Because we recommend that you explore the Cameron Highlands on your own, instead of taking part in a standard tour, you should bear in mind that you sometimes have to arrange transportation. We rented a scooter for eight hours for 60 MYR (13 euros). For example, we made a DIY (do it yourself) tour for the Cameron Highlands!

Tip: prefer not to ride a scooter? Then a tour might be nice. We have heard good stories about Eco Cameron Tours.

1. Visit the tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands

The Cameron Highlands is primarily known for its beautiful tea plantations. You don’t see the green tea hills when you are in one of the three villages, however, just a few kilometres outside the city you can already see the first tea houses. There are currently three tea plantations that tourists can visit. A visit generally means that you drink tea here, enjoy the beautiful view and sometimes get a tour.

We visited all three tea houses and below you will find our findings:

1. BOH Sungai Palas Tea Center

This is the most popular tea house, mainly because of the amazing view you have here. There is a nice restaurant on the hill which offers a lovely view of the tea fields. Admission is free, keep in mind that this place is very popular, causing (long) traffic jams. So come as early as possible (especially around December and January, when all the locals have holidays too!). Free tours are given here every 30 minutes.

2. BOH Tea Plantation (Fairlie Tea Plantation)

This tea plantation is also from BOH plantations, just like number 1. It is a lot less crowded here than at Sungai Palas Tea Center and you can take a short hike to a viewpoint here. The facilities are slightly less good and new than at Sungai Palas. You can also do a (very short) tour here for free, but that meant that during our visit you could walk five minutes through the factory without verbal explanation.

3. Bharat Tea Plantations (Cameron Valley Tea)

This plantation is closest to Tanah Rata. There are two tea houses here (called Cameron Valley Tea 1 and 2), where you can taste and purchase tea. We visited this plantation during our hike (see activity 3). You can walk along the tea fields, which is a great experience! No tours are given and to walk through the plantation you have to pay an entrance fee of 3 MYR (around 70 cents). Bharat Tea Plantation entrance fee is definitely worth the money.

What is the best tea plantation to visit in the Cameron Highlands?

Our visit to number 1, BOH Sungai Palas tea Center, was the best because off the many different stunning views of the tea fields. If you drive a scooter, traffic doesn’t matter since you are able to pass the cars easily.

2. Climb the top of Gunung Jasar and walk through the tea plantations (trail 6 and 10)

There are fourteen hike routes around Tanah Rata and Brinchang. There are long and short hikes, ranging from easy hikes to more difficult ones. On our first morning in the Cameron Highlands, we walked trail 10 and trail 6 combined, as trail 10 turns into trail 6. At hike 10 you walk in an hour through a rain forest to the top of Mount Gunung Jasar. Here you have a beautiful view of the village of Tanah Rata and you can see various tea plantations. There is a large electricity pole here at the top too, which might make the accomplishment of reaching the top a little bit less special. Nevertheless, the views are worth it.

Tip: download the app  Maps Me where all 14 hikes are clearly marked.

After the top of Gunung Jasar, you walk a little bit back, after which you switch to trail 6. The first part of this route is quite challenging because the path is hardly visible due to the dense vegetation and you have to descend on a muddy path. Slowly the path becomes less steep and you see more of the beautiful environment again. You walk among farms, coriander fields, vegetable and fruit plantations.

Please note: due to the mud and the descents, be aware of (heavy) rain since the path will become very slippery and potentially dangerous.

The last part goes straight through the tea plantations of Bharat Tea Plantations , also known as Cameron Valley Tea. This is a very special experience and a perfect end to this hike. Be aware that at the end of the Bharat Tea Plantation, you still have to pay the 3MYR entrance fee.

Tip: hike 6 does not end in Tanah Rata. Since there is no public transport available from here, you can grab a taxi, walk 4.5 kilometres on the road back, or like us, try to hitch-hike your way back!

3. Eat fresh scones with strawberry jam at The Lord’s Cafe

Finished walking and craving for something sweet? Then be sure to stop by The Lord’s Cafe . This place is the ultimate mix of Asia and England. After ordering, wait until your table number is announced, after which you can pick up your scones (very Asian). In the meantime, take a look around you, there are statues of Christ everywhere, religious prints and crosses. Very special in Islamic Malaysia.

And then you can pick up your scone. This is still warm and seems to come directly from England. With a lot of butter, freshly prepared cream and strawberry jam made from local strawberries, this is a real treat! Click here for the location of The Lord’s Cafe on Google Maps.

4. Visit a strawberry farm and a butterfly farm!

Yes, these are touristic attractions, however, I still enjoyed visiting both a strawberry farm and a butterfly farm. There are many different strawberry farms in the Cameron Highlands, we visited Raju’s Hill , near BOH Sungai Palas Tea Center. Admission is free, but if you want to pick strawberries, you have to pay for that (30 MYR, approximately € 6.5 for 500 grams). Besides, you can drink delicious fresh strawberry shakes (ask if they do not add sugar). Not a big fan of shakes, don’t worry, they are plentiful of other treats with fresh strawberries to choose from.

Near the Raju’s Hill strawberry farm is also the Cameron Highland Butterfly Farm . This is a greenhouse where you can view butterflies, but also other insects and reptiles. All the animals you see here can also be found in the wild in the Cameron Highlands. This is certainly a fun activity to do with children. Time spent here is around 45 minutes and you pay 10 MYR entrance fee (around € 2.20) per person.

5. Hike to the Robinson Falls (trail 9A)

With this hike, you walk from Tanah Rata to the village of Habu in about two hours. Along the way, you walk past Robinson Falls , a small but beautiful waterfall just outside the city. It is not an intensive hike and you mainly walk on a well-maintained trail.

From Habu, you can take the bus back to Tanah Rata.

6. Eat tasty snacks at the Night Market

Every Friday and Saturday evening, there is a night market at the Golden Hills. This is located about two kilometres north of Tanah Rata, near the golf course. Here you find local dishes, strawberries, tea, honey and a whole bunch of souvenirs.

Note: if you do not want to walk along the road in the dark, you will have to take a taxi. There are no buses to and from the Night Market.

7. Visit the Time Tunnel museum

The Time Tunnel Museum is an unexpectedly fun museum. In this museum, you learn more about the history of Malaysia, the Cameron Highlands and how people used to live here. I hardly knew anything about the occupation of Malaysia in World War II. You can also read about the mysterious disappearance of Jim Thompson here. No spoiler alert here, find our yourself what happened to Jim. Super interesting!

Everything is explained on the basis of attributes, old toys, golf clubs and old photos. Admission is 6 MYR per person (approximately € 1.30) and you can get through the museum within an hour.

The bests restaurants in the Cameron Highlands

There are more than enough restaurants in Tanah Rata and Brinchang. We can recommend the following places to eat.

The Lord’s Cafe – fresh scones and tea

As described above, you eat fresh scones and drink nice tea at The Lord’s Cafe. Absolutely worth a visit. Click here for the location on Google Maps.

Restoran Sri Brinchang – budget-friendly Indian food

Looking for good but cheap food? Then eat something at Restoran Sri Brinchang. Here you will find fresh naan, tasty curry, hotpot and banana leaf (several small dishes and rice) for very little money. We ate here twice because we liked it so much! Click here for the location on Google Maps.

Barracks Cafe – tasty sandwiches

Unfortunately, Barracks Cafe was closed when we were here. Everyone is enthusiastic about this restaurant that is located in an old army barracks. You eat sandwiches, salads and healthy dishes here. Click here for the location on Google Maps.

Delicious & Happiness Cafe – cheap Chinese food

In Brinchang you will find Delicious and Happiness Cafe , a Chinese restaurant where you will find many vegetarian dishes. You can also order the Malaysian dish “Steamboat” here. You then get a large pot of boiling broth in which you can prepare vegetables, fish and meat yourself. The prices are low here. Click here for the location on Google Maps.

Mr Aisu Icecream – delicious ice cream

Mr Aisu makes the tastiest ice cream we ate in all of Malaysia. His shop in Brinchang sells ice cream made from fresh strawberries, Belgian chocolate and green tea. The ice creams are not cheap but well worth it. Click here for the location on Google Maps.

How do you get to the Cameron Highlands?

The Cameron Highlands are located between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, perfect if your route is like this. Below you find various transportation options to reach the Cameron Highlands. Please note that all buses arrive and depart from Tanah Rata. If you want to go to Brinchang or Ringlet, you will have to take a local taxi and local taxis are not cheap. Both Grab and MyCar are not present in the Cameron Highlands.

You can book bus tickets online in advance via the Easybook or BusOnlineTicket sites.

Hello, lovely article. Are there any trails that are flat surfaces to walk on? I am recovering from a knee injury but at the same want to escape the tropical heat in the coming long weekend in May. You can suggest any other cool but hassle free places in peninsular Malaysia as well.

Hi Jabin, Sorry not so far we know. But we have to be honest and haven't paid attention to looking for trails which are completely flat :( Enjoy your time and get well soon! Kind regards, Charlotte

Sungei Palas Tea Garden

History of Sungei Palas Tea Garden

BOH acquired the Sungei Palas Tea Garden in the 1950’s. At the time, the land was in a dire state and a far cry of what it is today. However, BOH’s then Chairman, Tristan Russell, saw the potential of Sungei Palas and over the years turned the ailing land into a lush tea garden recognisable across Malaysia and by international travellers.

With tourism continuing to grow in the Cameron Highlands region, BOH built the visitor centre and café in 2007. Dubbed J.A.’s balcony after BOH’s founder J.A. Russell, its iconic 20-foot overhanging balcony that doubles as viewing deck has made Sungei Palas Tea Garden a must-visit destination in the Cameron Highlands. In 2019, the visitor centre was expanded to include a new section. Aptly dubbed Tristan’s Terrace,  the new section has a seating capacity of 200 people with a gorgeous panoramic view, which only enhancing the unique hospitality experience and tea-drinking pleasures BOH offers.
