The Award-Winning “Star Trek: The Continuing Mission” audio drama returns

With the world of video exploding, it’s exciting to see that the audio drama format is still alive and well. After a nearly three year hiatus, the cast and crew of the USS Montana have returned for an entirely new episode, Cathedral in the Void , available from the Continuing Mission  Website .

During it’s initial “season” of six episodes released between the winter of 2007 and the fall of 2009, the series amassed a listenership of tens of thousands, garnering critical acclaim and reviewed on CNN . We had even named it, “ Audio Drama of the Year ,” in 2008.

Series producer Sebastian Prooth is proud of the series use of a ship and storyline set outside of the established series canon, but still able to weave it into the same universe. The story follows the adventures of a Federation crew plucked out of the 23 rd century (from around the time of the events in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn ) and re-emerging in the 24 th , just prior to the beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

“The benefits of working in an audio format is that we’ve been able to utilize technology to bring together talented actors from around the world without having to physically bring them together,” said Prooth.

The bulk of the original audio was completed back in 2011, with only a few characters’ dialogue remaining. Finally, it was an offer by Canadian fan and audio engineer, Matheiu Blondin, to help assemble the episode that restarted the momentum. That addition to the team, in tandem with Prooth’s desire to rejuvenate the series for an audience of today. This new  episode  summons up the creations of  HP Lovecraft, the father of modern horror, who consigned his unspeakable creations to the farthest reaches of the final frontier. Most call them aliens. Some know them as the Elder Gods. In the time before time, they ruled the Earth. Now, the only thing that can stop their return is Captain Edwards and the crew of the USS Montana.

The episode is well paced and is immersive as an audio experience, and easy to listen to (many effect-laden audio dramas become cluttered, which isn’t the case with Cathedral.  The actor’s performances are solid and not over the top. The cast is headlined by Captain Paul Edwards ( Scott Martineck ), Commander Darius Locke ( Stephen Perkins ), Lt. Commander Jack McGuire ( Patrick McCray ), and Lt. Commander Thomas Plummer (Nathan Wolfenbarger).

This new episode is in part an experiment to see if there’s still an audience for Star Trek in an audio drama format. They have already been drafting ideas for future episodes, but before they proceed they want to see what number of listens this episode receives.

Personally I’m a big fan of listening to audio format fiction, as I use them to pass the time on the daily work commute. Full format audio plays however have become too rare, with World War Z having been an interesting hybrid between a full cast and straight audiobook. It’s refreshing to see something in the tradition of the classic Orson Wells broadcast of the War of the Worlds being created anew today.

Full format audio plays are having at bit of a renaissance over at BigFinish.com. They do Doctor Who, the Avengers (British TV) and some other British TV adaptations, but also some original and classic fantasy and sci-fi stuff.

******crickets chirping******

Full format audio drama is not rare at all. There’s close to 1,000 (yes, 1,000) at bigfinish.com, all made with professional actors and increasing by six or so every month…

I am a fan of Star Trek in any form. There is not much to talk about it the world of Star Trek. The new movie feels like it is taking forever to be made. We are so not getting a movie for the 50th Anniversary.

Oh, I think we’ll get a movie for the 50th anniversary, it’s just a question of quality.

It will either be a classic, one for the ages, or a warmed over turd.

I won’t bother telling you which one I’m betting on.

They only posted this as a distraction from the Roberto Orci directing story which is either liked by the mindless newbies or disliked by the long time fans.

Really The Keeper?

Funny… I’ve been a fan since the early 80s. I find the J.J. reboot quite good. Which category do I fall under?

This, but no story about Starship Exeter ending a 10 year long wait by finishing “The Tressaurian Intersection”?

Thanks piper kev, it’s been so long waiting for Star Trek Exeter I have to watch from the beginning. 2 new Star Trek projects in one day! I always liked the Mr. Bathusalak character.

I watched Exeter, I liked it a lot. Especially that first officer……..:)

Nothing beats Star trek Continues. Pure TOS magic.

6. Harry Ballz – May 11, 2014

My enthusiasm for this next film is incredibly low.

@6. Hey, people play 50/50 odds in Vegas all the time. If the overall body of Trek movies tells us anything, it’ll land in that middle third of good, but not great movies…

So, Danpaine, you’ve decided to CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM?

(let’s see how many show titles we can use in conversation)

15. Harry Ballz – May 12, 2014

Indeed. I’m not fond of the way they’re making Spock ALMOST HUMAN in this new timeline. An emotional, weepy human, at that.

Danpaine, the last movie was so bad, I think the writers must have CRIMINAL MINDS.

Yeah, I would think that the long-awaited completion of “The Tressaurian Intersection” would be of note, but of course things are pretty dicey at Trekmovie nowadays. More downbeat (not to mention gruesome) than I would have expected, the finale caps off a project that I personally found flawed in a variety of ways, yet very much worth the trouble of following to see if it would ever get finished. I’m glad it finally happened.

Yep. Would think that the long-awaited release of “Starship Exeter” would be more newsworthy. However, I’ve come to find that most Trek news sites aren’t actually interested in news.

Harry, as I left the theater after a fruitless second viewing of STID, I felt like THE WALKING DEAD.

Thoroughly enjoyed the last two fims, especially STID. Looking forward to the next one. I would love to see a TV miniseries on the 24th century shows for 2016 executive produced by Frakes and Burton. They are very capable to handle such an undertaking.

6. Harry Ballz – May 11, 2014 I couldn’t agree more.

The great Star Trek films and TV episodes were so because of the original ideas & characters, not to mention writing. STID was none of these. Resurrecting Khan was an epic blunder!!

I just finished the entire series. This was great fun! Does anyone know of another fan Trek audio books/dramas? I wish a Klingon group would do a professional sounding readiing of The Final Reflection by Mike Ford. I love that book so much I have thought of reading it aloud my self with klingon music in the backgroud.

Space is dark. Let’s face it. The universe of shiny, well-groomed Starfleet officers and the pristine starships of the United Federation of Planets where the Prime Directive rules and hopes for galactic unity of all species is an ongoing quest is reinterpreted in our vision of the reality of the Star Trek Universe. It’s not all “let’s be friends with our alien brethren”. Here the Federation has a dark underbelly and the daring crew of the Nosferatu boldly goes where Starfleet fears to tread. These are desperate times. We are the desperate measure. The heroic adventures of captain and cadet alike. From the ambush of Salem One to the Battle of Cheron, THE ROMULAN WAR tells stories of heroism and courage alongside tales of loss and brutality which affected countless millions. Earth's developments in technology, tactics, and diplomacy are examined, as is the political and social unrest which eventually led to the Romulans' humiliating defeat. Captain's logs, eyewitness video, journal entries, and period photographs combine with "found footage" of the war's key conflicts to realistically depict a world where mankind's very survival is at stake.

Star Trek: Picard Audio Drama Announced, Starring Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd

It’s time to ‘boldly go’ deeper into the relationship between Seven and Raffi.

Seven of Nine, Raffi star in new Star Trek audio drama ‘No Man’s Land’

Star Trek is set to enter the world of audio dramas, as Simon & Schuster have announced the upcoming release of Star Trek: Picard: No Man’s Land . The full-cast audio drama will see Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd return to their Picard roles as Seven of Nine and Raffi, respectively, as they further explore the relationship we saw blossom between them in the first season of the Paramount+ series.

The audio drama will be set immediately after the events of Star Trek: Picard season one and is written by series co-creator Kirsten Beyer and Star Trek comics writer Mike Johnson . First details were revealed on StarTrek.com today:

While Seven of Nine and Raffi are enjoying some much-needed R&R in Raffi’s remote hideaway, their downtime is interrupted by an urgent cry for help: a distant, beleaguered planet has enlisted the Fenris Rangers to save an embattled evacuation effort. As Seven and Raffi team up to rescue a mysteriously ageless professor, whose infinity-shaped talisman has placed him in the deadly sights of a vicious Romulan warlord, they take tentative steps to explore the attraction depicted in the final moments of  Picard  season one.

In addition to Ryan and Hurd, the extended cast of No Man’s Land includes Fred Tatasciore (Lt. Shaxs on  Star Trek: Lower Decks ), John Kassir (The Cryptkeepr on HBO’s  Tales from the Crypt ), and John Cutmore-Scott (Cameron and Jonathan Black on ABC’s Deception).

No Man’s Land will run 1 hour and 40 minutes and will be released on February 22nd .

Audio drama recommendations

  • The recommended list

I love these audio dramas and serials. For each there’s a short description, and where to find it.

I’m working through recommendations from https://www.reddit.com/r/audiodrama/ and the associated Discord, as well as material on https://archive.org/details/radioprograms I’ll add future finds to the list if I feel they’re worth your time.

Pilgrim (BBC)

Tumanbay (bbc), wooden overcoats, the lord of the rings (1980s, bbc), star trek: outpost, the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy (bbc), earthsearch, earthsearch mindwarp (bbc), left right game, impact winter, various bbc sci-fi, fantasy and crime adaptations, the archers, where the leaves fall purple.

The best audio drama ever made - if that changes I’ll edit. BBC production values meet urban/rural fantasy in Sebastian Baczkiewicz’s tales of the fae, old gods and Billy Pilgrim - a very British immortal.

Where to get it: Internet Archive (free), BBC Sounds (free) or Audible

Game of Thrones scale meets The Mamluk Sultanate in four huge production series. Big budget production and the very best sound engineering and performances.

Where to get it: The series site has audio and the actual scripts (free), Internet Archive (free), BBC Sounds (free) or Audible

Wonderfully warm comedy superficially about rival funeral directors, but later about much more, set on an imaginary Channel Island. Evokes the particular feel of the Channel Islands, plus characters you’ll come to love.

Where to get it: https://www.woodenovercoats.com/

Starts as sci-fi comedy a little like Red Dwarf in feel, but soon finds its feet as a dystopian drama with horror touches.

Where to get it: https://wolf359.fm for the original podcast eps (free)

Thirteen episodes of perfection. This had more influence on Peter Jackson’s films than almost any other telling. Michael Hordern and Ian Holm (as Frodo in this version) excel.

Where to get it: Avoid the Audible re-hack! They cut it into three and added a bunch of awful crap to make three purchases. Try BBC Sounds, Internet archive or other less reputable download locations to find the original.

Professional quality but fan-produced drama taking advantage of ST’s lenient view of fan content. The tribulations of DS3, an almost forgotten Federation deep space base, and its crew and visitors. Tailed off in later series but the initial few series are excellent.

Where to get it: https://giantgnome.com/our-shows/audio-drama/star-trek-outpost/ for the original eps (free)

Not an adaptation; it was an audio drama first! This is the original! Hear the programmes that spawned the novel and all its sequels and a cultural phenomenon.

Where to get it: Try BBC Sounds, Internet archive or other less reputable download locations to find the original.

Slightly dated but still gripping. A tale of young people who are the final survivors on a generational colony voyage gone wrong. Sinister A.Is make imperfect parents, with unsettling motives. Mindwarp is a shorter prequel, comissioned for BBC Radio 7 when it existed.

Where to get it: Internet Archive (free), BBC Sounds (free)

A creepypasta tale from Reddit converted into a high-quality audio serial starring Tessa Thompson, who’s excellent.

Where to get it: https://qcodemedia.com/theleftrightgame

Urban/rural dark/creepy contemporary fantasy set in the Pacific Northwest USA, with a strong sense of place and high production values. Sadly, while it starts strong, it suffers from the Lost fate of not knowing from the start where it’s going, and wandering far past its natural conclusion. Worth it for the first 2 or 3 series though.

Where to get it: http://tanispodcast.com/how-to-listen/

A tightly plotted dark mystery. One night 300 people disappear from a worker’s town/research base in Tennessee. Journalist Lia Haddock has a family connection and investigates for public radio, finding dark secrets along the way. Later made into a TV series with Jessica Biel (never seen it so can’t comment on the TV quality.)

Where to get it: https://twoupproductions.com/limetown/podcast

Post-apocalypse meets vampires. Rather like the Van Helsing TV series, the world is a place where vampires are able to avoid all sunlight, and prey on scattered human settlements. An audible original.

Where to get it: Only on Audible

If you have a favourite genre book or tale, the BBC have probably adapted it for radio broadcast. Usually these are abridged single reader versions for the Book at Bedtime slot, or full cast adaptations for the weekday drama slots. Some of my favourite BBC adaptations are:

  • Neuromancer
  • Rendezvous with Rama
  • A Wizard of Earthsea
  • The Didius Falco and Brother Cadfael mysteries
  • Inspector Morse
  • There’s daily darama, the best put out as a weekly podcast

I don’t feel this is cheating. Everyone needs a soap they love, and this is mine. I’ve gone off it at times, and like any soap it has good and bad days, but I’ve pretty much been hooked since the 1980s.

Where to get it: BBC Sounds (free)

Midnight Burger

Oh my gosh this is capable of making me say, “Oh my gosh.” I’m through series 1 and even if there’s now some sort of drop in quality, which I doubt, my life is better and more cosy for having listened to it.

Where to get it: https://www.weopenatsix.com/ (free)

A tightly plotted whoddunit/what-was-done with thrilling twists and turns right to the end. Ends in a satisfying way without pointing to a second series that will drag too little story over too many series, like some podcasts do now. Some clunky writing in the framing device/narrative voice but otherwise great.

Where to get it: https://www.wtlfp.com/ (free)

I dunno if these are good but I’ll move them above if they are.

  • The White Vault Good first series, subsequent tale strung out beyond interest like Tanis.

  • Goofs The deck locations for Kirk's Quarters, Sickbay and Transporter Room vary (usually between decks 4-7) throughout the series.

  • Crazy credits On some episodes, the closing credits show a still that is actually from the Star Trek blooper reel. It is a close-up of stunt man Bill Blackburn who played an android in Return to Tomorrow (1968) , removing his latex make up. In the reel, He is shown taking it off, while an off-screen voice says "You wanted show business, you got it!"
  • Alternate versions In 2006, CBS went back to the archives and created HD prints of every episode of the show. In addition to the new video transfer, they re-did all of the model shots and some matte paintings using CGI effects, and re-recorded the original theme song to clean it up. These "Enhanced" versions of the episodes aired on syndication and have been released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Description

Star Trek: Unity is a fan fiction audio drama set in the Star Trek universe. The audio drama is intended to serve as a backstory for an upcoming fan-produced animated series. There is currently two episodes available out of a planned total of four.

The Star Trek: Unity series starts off with a four-part audio mini-series that provide an introduction to the crew of the USS Unity set against the starship's construction at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in Mars orbit. These audio-only episodes will also shed some light on the back story of these characters and the internal character drives that will impact how they will handle the situations they will face in the animated series.
