Trek LCARS Android Apps By NSTEnterprises

Hello, I’m the developer NSTEnterprises.

Some of you know me and have been following and using my ✦TREK✦ Apps for years. My apps have been on the Google Play Store since 2014, but are still relatively unknown.

I currently have 22 apps that can change your home screen interface, dialer apps, SMS/MMS texting apps, note apps, notification soundboards, and a lot more. I make the apps completely immersive with the looks and button sounds you love in a few ✦TREK✦ styles.

TREK: Total Interface - Google Play

I’m a big Sci-Fi fan, and I actually started doing this in 2011. I noticed there wasn’t anything available I wanted and nothing up to my perfectionist standards.

So, I started playing for personal use. Eventually, I got on the Play store to sell the apps as a supplemental income (to justify the time spent on it to my wife). I’m actually amazed at how much I’ve managed to do in just my spare time while having a full-time job, 2 kids, and a house I’m constantly working on.

I dream of my apps taking off enough to allow me to stop my regular job and focus on this full-time. If that happens, you can expect a lot more ✦TREK✦ apps from me, and I’d finally be able to look into making something similar for Windows.

Unfortunately, because I’m pretty hidden by the algorithms, I have to rely on word-of-mouth, and people actually directly looking for something like my apps [and then scrolling for a bit]. So, if you get my apps, reviewing and sharing on social media would really help. I know millions of people would want my apps, but they have to know they exist to get them.

TREK: Lock Screen - Google Play

How To Start With My Apps

First, here is my complete list of apps: https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=NSTEnterprises

and more than that on the Amazon App Store: http://www.amazon.com/gp/mas/dl/android?p=com.treking.treksounds.newBoardpro&showAll=1 (especially the New Trek style)

For the New Trek-style, I had to put the SMS, Notes, and Dialer exclusively on Amazon as it uses the same code as the more popular Total Interface versions and Google doesn’t consider a different UI as a different user experience for their new repetitive content policy.

I recommend starting by changing your home screen/launcher which is more than enough for most, but you can expand on it with the other components.

TREK: Launcher - Google Play

Pick your style.

(Click on links to see demo videos)

  • TREK: Total Interface
  • TREK: Total Interface (Large) – for people without good vision on nimble fingers
  • TREK: Trek Total Launcher Theme (+ TREK: Launcher to unlock the icons and extra content) * New Trek style

For more complete immersion, you can add the notification sounds, and matching dialer/SMS/notes apps. It is worth noting that my apps are only available for Android.

Besides wallpaper IOS does not allow for changing of the home screen, icons, or even support widgets. I could make some other apps for IOS, but I find Apple’s imposed limits and app store policies/practices too repressive.

Not Just For Phones…

Both versions of the Total Interface Large and Regular are updated to now fully support the Fold models. Next I’ll get to the New Trek version. pic.twitter.com/jLovtw1ny0 — NSTEnterprises (@TREK_Apps) April 25, 2022

RENEGADES: Icarus - Google Play

What’s Coming In The Future

The soonest thing I have coming up is another Total Launcher theme. I’ve been talking with Andrew Jarvis (the designer of the Star Trek: Picard LCARS).

He has given me some of his work and input on his vision of how to use the colours and lots of other tips for perfecting it. He will collaborate with me giving me feedback and some materials, of course without violating the contract or sharing anything owned by Paramount/CBS.

Andrew Jarvis did a fantastic job with updating LCARS and is happy to have fans enjoy it. If it’s popular, more components may follow. This will be similar to my prior collaboration with Scott Nakada, the very talented designer of the updated LCARS for the fan film Star Trek: Renegades .

Disclaimer

It’s obvious in the app descriptions, but I’ll mention it here as well, my apps are not official or licenced. They are fan-made at a perfectionist level that doesn’t exist even in licenced apps. I don’t use any trademarks, logos, or registered intellectual property.

Of course, not using trademarked names is also why I have trouble being discovered. Perhaps many of you had an app before that used properties like those that were eventually removed and you lost your purchase because the developer didn’t know any better.

Bad apps can survive the Play Store for many years though because nobody with a licence sees them as competition to complain to CBS and have them removed.

My apps are a parody. As you see in their descriptions, I roast them a little about how I make complete gibberish sci-fi interfaces actually functional and useful. It actually is like some opposite parody where the interfaces seem to make themselves look stupid, then I make them smart. (This freedom of speech is also important to the existence of my apps.)

Well, that’s it. I hope you enjoy and share my apps. Most things have directions or a FAQ in the description, but I’m always available for support at [email protected]

1 • Classic Theme

Although not the first LCARS display seen on screen, I still refer to this style and color palette as 'classic' because it was often visible in all three Star Trek series: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. It is also my original LCARS inspired web design and is the theme for this website.

Star Trek LCARS Android Theme

LCARS is a computer operating system in the Star Trek fictional universe, and an acronym for Library Computer Access/Retrieval System. It’s mostly known for the style of the computer displays, especially the ones in the The Next Generation  and Voyager series.

The LCARS graphical user interface was designed by  Michael Okuda , and influenced by Gene Roddenberry . In homage to its creator, the visual style has come to be known among fans as ‘okudagrams.’

I’ve found this great LCARS Android theme in the Google Play Store. It’s called  RENEGADES – LCARS , and it’s totally free! There are no ads, notifications, or registration, the only catch is that the theme requires a launcher app called Total Launcher , which is not a big deal, in my opinion.

Below, you can find two screenshots of how it looks on my phone. It works nearly perfect on my Sony Xperia C3. I haven’t used all the features yet, but I already noticed that it’s highly customizable. It’s free and pretty cool, so why not give it a try?

10 best Star Trek apps in celebration of its anniversary

Published on September 20, 2021

Trek TI Keyboard best star trek apps for Android

Star Trek celebrated its 50th anniversary back in 2016. It’s amazing the franchise has lasted this long and generated such a large cast of memorable characters. Picard will always be the be the best captain, but I also don’t think Voyager is bad, so what do I know? There are tons of new ways to engage with Star Trek on your mobile devices. Most of the apps on our list will let you read or watch the series — it’s really easy these days. There isn’t much else but do we need anything else? Let’s look at the best Star Trek apps for Android.

The best Star Trek apps for Android

  • FANDOM for: Star Trek
  • Google Play Books

Movies Anywhere

Netflix or cbs all access, ntsenterprises apps, your web browser.

Price: Free / Comic prices vary / $5.99 per month

Comixology is arguably the best app for comic book fans. Star Trek has few a comic book series and most of them are here. The app acts as an excellent reader for comic books, with a few different viewing options. Additionally, comics are usually reasonably priced. Plus, the app syncs between devices, and comics are downloadable for offline reading if needed. Most of the comics go for between $5 and $10. However, you can also do $5.99 per month and read all of the comics you want. The choice is yours.

FANDOM by Wikia

Price: Free

FANDOM by Wikia screenshot 2020

FANDOM is an excellent app for Star Trek fans. It’s a community database for the Star Trek universe, with hundreds of articles by fans, quick facts about characters, and all kinds of other stuff. Additionally, you can discuss the series with other fans, recommend changes to existing pages, and otherwise engage with other Trekkies. It’s a neat and interactive platform for fans of Star Trek, and also entirely free with no in-app purchases. There are ads, but they’re not bad. There used to be a FANDOM app for every individual topic, but the developers rolled everything into a universal app relatively recently so that’s what we’re linking to now.

Price: Free / Varies

Facer is a watch face app for Wear OS, with a variety of functional watch face themes. You can add stuff like weather, battery percentage, and other such functions. Yes, there are also several good Star Trek watch faces available. In fact, this is one of the best ways to make your Wear OS devices look like a Star Trek device. This is a neat way to express your love of Star Trek right on your wrist all the time. Facer is a free app. Some of the watch faces may cost a few bucks, but nothing serious. It’s relatively easy to use once you get used to it.

Google Play Books / Amazon Kindle / Nook

Price: Free / Book costs vary

Google Play Books screenshot 2019 Final

There are a bunch of Star Trek books and most of them are on various ebook outlets. Google Play Books, Amazon Kindle, and Nook are the big three. Google Play Books has the most friendly setup for Android users, though Amazon Kindle often has more competitive prices, and the Kindle devices provide a more natural platform for reading. Nook is a lot like Kindle but a little bit smaller in scope. In any case, most of the Star Trek novels are available on one or all of them. Amazon also lets you buy hard copies if you want those, too. Any of these make for good Star Trek apps.

Price: Free / Movie prices vary

Movies Anywhere screenshot 2021

Movies Anywhere is an excellent video streaming service for movies. It lets you log into Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Google Play Movies, Vudu, and a couple of others. You can watch any movie from any services you have purchased. You should be able to find basically any Star Trek movie you want between all of those services. After all, some here aren’t even available on streaming services like Netflix. Plus, the app has a decent UI, Chromecast support, and decent stability. It had a bit of a rough start, but it’s improved since its early days.

Price: Free trial / $8.99-$15.99 per month

Perhaps the best option on the list is either Netflix or the CBS All Access streaming app. Both contain a very large number of Star Trek episodes. Netflix offers the original series, The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Enterprise, and the animated series. CBS All Access also has basically every episode of Star Trek out there, including the new series Star Trek Discovery. Hulu also has an excellent selection of Star Trek stuff. All these services cover the TV stuff better. You may need Movies Anywhere to watch all of the movies. All of these work as good Star Trek apps.

Price: Free / Up to $3.99

NTSEnterprise is a developer on Google Play and, from the looks of things, a huge Star Trek fan. This developer has a ton of Star Trek themes, soundboards, live wallpapers, and other stuff. Most of the developer’s themes are for Total Launcher, so you’ll need it to use them. However, it’s probably the best looking and most functional LCARS theme on Google Play. The soundboards and live wallpapers are also excellent and the developer also has some extras like a note taking app, a GO keyboard theme, and some other neat stuff to complete the effect. The apps usually have a free version and a premium version. The most expensive app we saw was $3.99, but most are $1.99

Price: Free / $3.99 per month / $24.99 per year

Reddit screenshot 2021

Reddit is a good place for Trekkies to talk to one another, gather news about the series, and discuss old episodes and movies. There are a few Star Trek subreddits, including r/StarTrek, r/TNG, r/Voyager, and r/DaystromInstitute. They all handle different types of discussions and different parts of the franchise. The main Reddit app is fine. There are some good third-party Reddit apps as well. You can also get rid of ads and add a few additional features for $3.99 per month or $24.99 per year, but you absolutely don’t need that to enjoy it.

See also:  The best Reddit apps for Android

Price: Free with in-app purchases

Zedge screenshot 2021

Zedge is probably the best app for ringtones, alarm tones, and notification tones. You can find a metric ton of Star Trek sounds for your phone here, including sound effects from various movies and shows. Most of them are high quality and Zedge even has some wallpapers as well. There are other ringtone apps and soundboard apps, but Zedge has more options. Plus, the vast majority of its content is completely free. It has a small marketplace for creators, but you probably won’t find Star Trek stuff there yet.

See also:  The best apps for notification tones and ringtones

Firefox screenshot 2021 2

Unfortunately, outside of NTSEnterprises and FANDOM, there aren’t a ton of Star Trek apps on mobile. However, there are still a metric ton of websites. There are sites to help you determine the current stardate, look up various timelines and summaries, and plenty of other websites for fans. It’s about as good as it gets for Trekkies since the app market for them is so small. Still, there are some entertaining sites out there for fans and the rest of the apps on the list should help fill in the blanks. We recommend Firefox because it was updated in 2020 with a bunch of good stuff and it’s actually pretty good.

Star Trek LCARS Theme

This is the definitive LCARS theme for Home Assistant! Countless hours have been poured into this project thus far, and it will continue to be updated and maintained as I cannot imagine my Home Assistant without it.

If you ask for support here, you may not get an answer for days, weeks, or months, vs. hours on the Discord server. The Discord community also has many people who can help more effectively than I can by myself just monitoring this thread.

Repo and documentation

Discord Banner 2

Collaboration (PRs) are welcome, and so are alternate color schemes!

OMG… I LOVE IT!!!

I am looking at moving from openHAB to Home Assistant, and any second thoughts I may have had are now GONE!!!

Even the font is good. The official LCARS font is, imo, the worst part of LCARS. I find it VERY difficult to read.

Well done, and well written GitHub to boot!

I’ll be trying this out as my next major wall tablet redesign, it will fit right in with the right color combination.

Have you worked to optimize this for phone use?

Thank you! Yes, but I only had to change one thing for it to look right on mobile, surprisingly. I daily drive this as the main theme for all my devices. I guess I should post some mobile screenshots!

LOVE IT! I have prob the last 16hrs trying adapt to my liking and not even close but well worth it. great job

This looks amazing!

Basic questions:

Can this theme be applied to JUST a dashboard, as opposed to the whole UI? I.e. will any parts of the theme break if it’s not applied to the whole UI?

I’d like to use this on just one dashboard that I cast to a screen.

Are there good guidelines or suggestions on what combination of cards are supported or look especially good in a dashboard cluster?

  • You can select a different theme on a per-device basis. Once you log into the device, click on your profile and select the theme. That should only apply it to that device/session.
  • Since the theme relies on Card Mod, you can apply the theme on a per-card basis as well.

Sorry for the late response on this. I started typing it on this browser tab weeks ago, and came back to the tab to find that I never actually hit the send button.

Fantastic I have been hesitating about Home Assistant and the availability of this theme means I will go ahead

You are truely a star.

Last night I upgraded to Home Assistant 2023.4.0. Ever since, those beautiful LCARS have a black and white gradient spread all over the screen.

:vulcan_salute:

P.S. I upgraded card-mod to release 3.2.2 (released Apr 4 to fix HA 2023.4) to no avail.

P.P.S. As far as I can tell with my shockingly limited knowledge of these things, it seems like the problem is located in this segment of the yaml file:

Oh, yikes. Looking into this.

I’m not seeing the black-and-white gradient on the screen, but I see that all modifications to the sidebar are broken or gone. I recommend reloading with a fresh cache to get to a usable state. I’ll be investigating the sidebar.

The HA team has completely reconstructed the sidebar and header bar, it appears. You can watch for updates as I have them here: HA-LCARS

Thanks a million, Jesse! You sure did a wonderful job fixing this within an hour. Amazing! Actually, just as amazing as the job you did with that LCARS theme over all. It’s just what I have always wanted. BTW, you were looking into adding sounds. If that worked, that’d be the icing on the cake for sure.

Just a quick question to everyone: The clock in the header bar is not back, yet, is it? I tried several browsers and refresh cycles. But for now, the clock and the end semi-circlular ornament seem to have vanished. So, I am not complaining (far from it actually). Rather I am wondering whether I have somehow messed up my local installation.

I’m actually working on getting the clock back today. I’ll send updates in the Discord channel as soon as (or if) I get it working again!

Why not here?

Several reasons:

  • The number of people engaged on the Discord channel dwarfs the number of people that engage here in this topic.
  • I am but a volunteer, already maintaining the code itself, the GitHub and documentation, fielding requests and issues in GitHub, and fielding requests and issues in the Discord server.

I’ll continue to respond to folks when they post here, but the most active place is the Discord server, and the second most active place is the GitHub page itself.

the only thing that would make it for me is some vertical fader buttons and some better assimilation of DBuit / sidebar-card … then omg watch out!

image

The thing is, though, I am a total Pakled (i.e. ignoramus, which might have been only too obvious to even the most casual bystander). How do I include that lcars.js file to become active?

I tried this in my configuration.yaml :

Alas, I could not get any sounds that way, even though my browser can access the lcars.js file at /local/plugins/lcars.js .

Oh, that’s still being worked on! Stick to the releases for now, please. I hope to have the sound effects and a more streamlined installation available for HA-LCARS 2.0 by this weekend.

LCARS Interface – build your own

star trek lcars android theme

LCARS interface – build your own: is an article to bring a science fiction Star Trek’esque interface into real world usage.

As I examined in the article Science Fiction into Science Fact , there are many tools we can use for ourselves these days that were previously only the realm of science fiction.

Working with KeyRings from WhereWeLearn, this example provides a step by step guide to building your own working LCARS interface.

The original interface  was originally designed by scenic art supervisor and technical consultant Michael Okuda.

You’ll need a few things, all of which are available Free of Charge.

The Video Version

There is a video of the process of building and putting live an LCARS Interface here

However for easy reference and find-able with a Google search, a step by step instruction reference is here too.

Step 1. Inspiration

star trek lcars android theme

Go to Google and search for “LCARS examples”

Click the Images tab and be inspired.

https://www.google.com/search?q=lcars+examples

Step 2. LCARS Interface Fonts

Firstly you’ll need some fonts for you LCARS Interface.  Easily managed thanks to the team in Star Trek Minutiae

http://www.st-minutiae.com/resources/fonts/index.html

Through experimentation I’ve found Nova Light Ultra SSi quite visually appealing for any LCARS Interface.

Both Nova Light Ulatr SSI and Context Ultra Condensed are free for personal use.

Copyright c 1992 Southern Software, Inc. All Rights Reserved

star trek lcars android theme

You can use any sans serif thin font to match the style.

This LCARS Interface is being used for public benefit and not for commercial gain.

Kudos to Southern Software, Inc. for making this font.

Step 3. Colours

Depending on which example you’ve gone for a sample of colours that works for you is in order.

I found this example on Pinterest from Alexander Richardson in 2009.  His email as per the image [email protected]

The USS Defiant with a few “tweaks” in it from the author makes for an amazing LCARS Interface.

star trek lcars android theme

I found a much fuller collection here of these ship diagrams here.

Consequently I worked through the image and extracted the colour pallet for the buttons.  Also I left the two blue colours in the diagram out of the palette.

star trek lcars android theme

Step 4. LCARS Interface is just boxes on top of boxes

If there’s anything in this article you’d like to chat to me about or help me with you can contact me here or on social media.

star trek lcars android theme

  • Firstly a black square to cover the background.
  • Secondly the red rounded box next
  • Thirdly the lime green rounded box
  • Next up was to add the two round ended boxes in blue
  • The tall purple box creates a uniform gap
  • Finally then two text boxes using the Yellow font colour

star trek lcars android theme

Then some very easy recoloring

  • Firstly leave the background alone
  • Secondly set the red box to the grey colour from the palette above.
  • Next up, lime green goes to black
  • Also the two blue ends to the grey
  • Easily swap the tall purple to black
  • And hey presto…

Step 5 – Your buttons on the LCARS Interface

I popped another box in the middle with some details and colours on the sides to make it a bit more of a “Star Trek” esque LCARS Interface.

star trek lcars android theme

Now when I add in three simple rounded boxes, I align the font right and with the bottom of the button.

The colour palette works together and is complimentary and an easy on the eye LCARS Interface

star trek lcars android theme

From that you can add as many buttons as you like, with whatever you want on them

Step 6. From Presentation to Image

Quite simple Ctrl and tap the letter A for all.  This will copy your entire LCARS Interface.

Open a drawing program like MsPaint on your computer.  You can see this in the video.

I thoroughly recommend using GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) … it’s awesome and it is free.

In the program, ctrl and V for Paste…. and there’s your new image.

Save it to your machine as a .jpg or as a .png.

Step 7. Online hosting

If you have online hosting you’re golden, just put the image online.

If you don’t have hosting, you can use a service like ImgBB

Again there’s a step by step using this approach in the video.

You will end up with a URL for your LCARS Interface. Mine ended up being….

https://i.ibb.co/Pm7JvQH/building-a-display-04.png

Step 8.  Making your LCARS Interface interactive

For this bit you use the URL you generated in the last step and a great online tool from the team at Image-Map.net

https://www.image-map.net/

This step is far easier explained using a video.  Not only that, how about a quick explanation on how to get it into WhereWeLearn as well.

Step 9. WhereWeLearn and sharing your LCARS Interface

Now that you have an Image Map and an Image URL… time to let the WhereWeLearn engine help you.

Please let me know about your LCARS interfaces.

Any chance at building an LCARS Star Trek theme?

LCARS seems like it would be a perfect theme for Obsidian! It basically is your own personal “Library Computer Access/Retrieval System” after all.

I know we have one theme that kind of/sort of used a color scheme reminiscent of LCARS, but if there was a true-blue LCARS theme it would be amazing!

Whoever comes up with that theme #TAKEMYMONEY !!!

  1. TREK: Total Interface

Now you can finally have a fully functional interface that you've waited 30 years for as your launcher, complete with button sounds and animations. This app's interface is meant to parody the way sci-fi designers on a cheap budget imagined future computers over 30 years ago. Although not the first LCARS display seen on screen, I still refer to this style and color palette as 'classic' because it was often visible in all three Star Trek series: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager.

  7. I finally made an LCARS theme for my phone! : r/startrek

A casual, constructive, and most importantly, welcoming place on the internet to talk about Star Trek. I finally made an LCARS theme for my phone! I've been meaning to do this for a while, and today I finally got around to making an LCARS theme for my phone. I spent the whole day on it, but it's absolutely worth it!

  8. TREK: Total Interface (Large)

Love this app. Am very happy with the customization, performance, and lovely effortless organizational design of this GUI. The LCARS interface allows full hijacking of Stock Android GUI and app drawer but also full usability of those features in standard Google format, per user preference, by allowing multiple points of access.

This app's interface is meant to parody the way sci-fi designers keep updating old sci-fi interfaces in a way that makes them nowhere closer to actually functional-looking, but rather just ...

  12. "To boldly theme where no man has themed before..."

I've always loved the aesthetic of the LCARS operating system (seen in TNG, DS9, VOY, and same-era movies), and decided with the advent of iOS 14 and its various photo-display widgets, it was time to "Trekify" my phone. That, and I wanted to theme a notoriously "unthemable" OS. iOS 14, LCARS Variant (Imgur Album)

  13. I made an LCARS UI that's fully responsive and should work on ...

Putting that aside, though, I don't see LCARS as a usable UI at all. It's designed to "look cool and futuristic" from a distance, and not functional up close. Most people that try to make LCARS functional in real life have to make decisions that wouldn't be seen on the show.

  18. LCARS for Android? : r/startrek

There is, just search for a star trek total launcher skin. FYI Lcars looks really cool, but isn't super functional as a UI since it's designed to look futuristic/cool in TV shots, not to convey information well. Search on the play store for something like "lcars launcher", you can probably find an LCARS-styled system launcher. I got a POSCAR.

  20. Any chance at building an LCARS Star Trek theme?

ui-ux. crisban September 29, 2021, 3:27am 1. LCARS seems like it would be a perfect theme for Obsidian! It basically is your own personal "Library Computer Access/Retrieval System" after all. I know we have one theme that kind of/sort of used a color scheme reminiscent of LCARS, but if there was a true-blue LCARS theme it would be amazing!

Here are the screenshots. The Lock Screen background comes from here with a minor edit to work with iOS 16's Focus modes.
