Unfortunately, due to Family commitments, we had to pull out of this gig. Sorry Guys!

Riot starting, bouncer bashing, cop baiting, hotel trashing, foul talking, noise making, chaos causing, venue wrecking, government hating, rule breaking, piss taking, unrelenting, punk rocking. Clearly we’re not talking about Pepsi adverts here, or indeed the many so-called punk bands that would gleefully sell themselves to such corporate giants for a palm full of silver. Whoo-hoo! The taste of a generation! Fuck off!

Let’s get one thing straight: The Exploited are not ‚punkers‘ or any of the other cutesy, watered down, MTV friendly names you might want to call them.

The Exploited are punk rock.

About the exploited.

The Exploited are a Scottish punk rock band from Edinburgh, Scotland, formed in 1979, in Edinburgh by Stevie Ross and Terry Buchan and later by ex-soldier Wattie Buchan (Terry's brother). They signed to Secret Records in March 1981, and that year released their debut EP Army Life. The album Punks Not Dead followed that year. The band maintained a large cult following in the 1980s among a hardcore working class punk and skinhead audience. Their songs have been covered by Slayer and Ice-T, and despite many lineup changes, Wattie has remained as the Exploited's singer and leader.

LIVE REVIEW: THE EXPLOITED with special guests TURD! & STUMPED

The rosemount hotel - 12th november 2023.

14 November 2023 The Rockpit

the exploited us tour

The Exploited did what was expected as they entered, enjoyed the adulation quickly before rip roaring into their wild set at a frenetic pace. Since 1979 they have torn stages up and from the outset, that wasn’t looking to change anytime soon!

I don’t care how many new punk bands I see these days, nobody can keep up with the old boys. They were born to go balls to the wall and tell everyone to fuck off whilst they’re at it. They were just built different, because the angst they carry with themselves is real angst from a time where angst was real angst. Maybe I should say angst a few more times?

the exploited us tour

Early highlights were ‘Dogs Of War’s and ‘The Massacre’, just getting us settled into the next hour of a wild ride. It was a packed house at The Rosemount, and the fans were eating it up like a hungry dog chowing down on some chips and gravy.

The movement on stage is what I always pinged for for my old band, but unfortunately they didn’t have the spike in their gut like I did, and like The Exploited do. ‘Chaos In My Life’ is just fun, by the way. Their music is meant to keep you on the edge, I already know they’d hate my compliments in this review but whatever you bastards, this is how I feel. So bite me.

the exploited us tour

They played a cover of The Vibrators ‘Troops Of Tomorrow’s which has a real mean beat.

This was the most authentic you can get for a true blue Old School Punk Rock experience. They had been waiting a long time to get to this city and I can’t fault the show at all. They were in your face, we were told to “Fuck Off” 20 times, the only way it should be. Many thanks for the Exploited for giving us that authenticity that is so few and far between these days!

THE EXPLOITED

PUNKS NOT DEAD… EVER!!

And neither is Wattie – but he did have a heart attack in December, so whilst The Exploited will be back up on stages around the world soon, it was felt an extra month to get back to top form was in order. This means the Australian and New Zealand Exploited dates scheduled for February will now be postponed until November 2023. Fear not, Covid lockdowns and near death experiences will not dissuade Wattie and The Exploited from fulfilling their promise to Aussie and Kiwi fans – they will be here in November and they are promising the best Exploited shows ever.

Tickets purchased for original advertised show will be valid for the new dates. Wattie had a heart attack, but he’ll be here – but if you’re too soft, that’s cool – refunds will be available from point of purchase until February 6th 2023.

If you’ve got something to say, then shout it!

If you’re going to be in an obnoxious punk rock band, then be in a really obnoxious punk band!

The Exploited ARE punk rock!!

Oh the thrill of it all! Punk rock is all you have. It’s your lifeblood, the only thing that makes sense and the only thing to look forward to in a world with ‘no future’. And it’s f*king exciting! The volume coursing through your veins to remind you that you’re alive.

It’s 1980 and Wattie Buchan and his mates are pissed off. A country in disarray; dole queues that stretch forever; greedy politicians treating the people like shit… The only option, is to give to punk rock what it has given to you — everything!

Thus were spawned THE EXPLOITED.

There was no toning these Edinburgh punks down, no diluting their music for public consumption.   Their debut album “Punks Not Dead” become the number one independent album of 1981. A year later ‘Troops Of Tomorrow’ was released and is now recognized as one of the all-time classic punk albums. The Exploited launched a new breed of politically outspoken anarcho-punk bands and have inspired generations of punks, from originals such as Discharge, Agnostic Front and Anti-Flag, right through to today’s punk bands, as well as speed metal icons such as Anthrax & Slayer.

Anyone unsure of what The Exploited stand for need only read the label on the tin: the band’s albums include ‘Death Before Dishonour’, ‘Beat The B*****s’ and ‘F*** The System’. The Exploited are fiercely socially and politically aware, covering everything from the Criminal Justice Act to the increasing use of Big Brother CCTV and never wavering from their anti-authoritarian, anti-war stance. The Exploited have been tear gassed by German cops, banned from Holland, arrested in Spain, and have caused more carnage than a multi-car pile-up on the UK’s M1. Despite it all, The Exploited have remained steadfastly true to their roots – never selling out, and never bowing down.

Take a look around – The Exploited are just as relevant today as they were in 1980, and with the band’s loyal squadron of fans The Barmy Army in tow, The Exploited are set to unleash 40 years of fury upon Australian and New Zealand.

You can stand on the sidelines or you can make a difference.

Organised chaos awaits.

Come on in.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. ( KFVS /Gray News) - An Amber Alert issued Wednesday afternoon for a child missing out of Missouri was canceled after the 3-year-old boy was found.

State investigators said the 3-year-old was found safe in Nashville, Tennessee, and the suspect was no longer at large.

Officers with the Perryville Police Department in Missouri spoke to a woman who said on March 19, she was assaulted along with her child. She also said the father of the child threatened the life of their infant and the 3-year-old boy if she reported the assaults.

The mother stated she did not feel safe reporting the incident to police until Wednesday because of the father’s threats.

Authorities did not immediately provide information about how the suspect was captured.

Olivia Rodrigo Concert Review: A Moving Night of Emotional Ballads and Angsty Rock Anthems

Olivia Rodrigo is not just a musician and singer-songwriter — she’s a performer. Stopping in Boston on April 2 as part of the ‘GUTS’ World Tour, she delivered an astonishing show, from dynamic visuals and choreography to the heartfelt lyrics, unreal sound, and touching moments of connection with the audience.

Opening with “bad idea right?,” Rodrigo started off the concert with a burst of energy. Bathed in flashing blue and red lights, Rodrigo bounced around the butterfly-shaped stage singing, “I only see him as a friend / the biggest lie I ever said” before her band played a gorgeous rock guitar riff, embodying the song’s carefree theme and building excitement for other pop-rock tracks in the set.

Walking onto the stage behind a backdrop of yearbook-esque photo frames spotlighting Rodrigo and her band, she moved on to the pop-punk inspired song “ballad of a homeschooled girl.” Full of angst, the track details social blunders like “I laughed with the wrong time, sat with the wrong guy” and other embarrassing missteps. Drummer Hayley Brownell’s powerful instrumentals alongside Rodrigo’s relatable lyrics conveyed the song’s message of letting go of the frustration that comes with social faux pas and embracing the slip-ups.

Rodrigo followed with the lead single off “ GUTS ,” “vampire.” An emotional track about a one-sided relationship, the song’s lyrics shone through Rodrigo’s passionate delivery and the fitting image of her silhouette in front of a full moon. “vampire” kicked off the more melodic portion of the set, with “traitor,” “drivers license,” and “teenage dream” following, which highlighted Rodrigo’s poignant lyricism and touching relatability.

“I wrote this next song a few days before my nineteenth birthday, at a time when I was so afraid of growing up and just dreaded every birthday. I thought growing up was the scariest thing,” Rodrigo said when introducing “teenage dream.”

Now 21, Rodrigo reflected on the joys of growing up and gave voice to her fears, while also becoming one of the people that says “it gets better the more you grow” from “teenage dream” — adding a new dimension to the nostalgic track.

“pretty isn’t pretty” stood out as another highlight, from the expert choreography to the song’s focus on burdensome feminine physical expectations. Surrounded by her backup dancers holding up mirrors emblematic of lollipops, Rodrigo sang, “I started to skip lunch, stopped eatin’ cake on birthdays / I bought a new prescription to try and stay calm.” Rodrigo’s dancers held up the mirrors to their faces and danced with them before thrusting them towards her, emphasizing not only how common it is to magnify one’s imperfections, but also how often physical standards of beauty are imposed on women.

A notable moment of connection during the show was Rodrigo’s performance of “logical” from a moon platform suspended in the air. As the glowing purple crescent moon gradually spun across the stadium, Rodrigo looked out at fans up above in the recesses of the venue as she sang, “I look so stupid thinkin’ / two plus two equals five,” making sure that all of her fans felt included in the concert. Though the floating moon may appear gimmicky, its inclusion during the melodious portion of the set fostered tender and intimate moments that can be difficult to achieve on a stadium tour.

“ Can’t Catch Me Now ,” written for the 2023 film “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” was another standout track in the set, and the instrumentals died down to center Rodrigo’s vocals and the vocals of her backup singers. The vengeful retribution at the heart of the song was evident from the stripped-back sound and limited choreography, calling attention to the track’s anthemic tension.

Rodrigo made sure to include songs off her debut album “SOUR” in the set as well. Sitting on the edge of the stage with guitarist Daisy Spencer, Rodrigo shared the experience of posting the song “happier” online — her first introduction to producer Dan Nigro.

“I posted a clip of it on my Instagram. I remember being so insecure. I thought it got no Instagram likes, and everybody hated it. I was like, ‘Ah, why’d I ever post it?’ But it turns out one very important person liked it. That was this producer, Dan,” Rodrigo said.

Towards the end of the set, Rodrigo returned to her fiery punk-rock tracks.

Towards the end of the set, Rodrigo returned to her fiery punk-rock tracks. The introduction to “brutal” was especially exciting, as Rodrigo’s band played the song’s instrumentals against a backdrop of a burning purple curtain. Emily Rosenfield and Spencer on guitar, and Moa Munoz on the bass, played lush riffs alongside Brownell’s rich drumline — fitting for the song’s theme of angsty teenage rage. Rodrigo yelled out, “And they’d all be so disappointed / Cause who am I if not exploited” before holding her hands out to the crowd, encouraging them to sing along and feel all of their teenage rage. From bouncing across the stage with her band to playing air guitar and headbanging, Rodrigo’s rendition of “brutal” was playful and full of feeling, embracing her youth while singing about all of its agonizing challenges.

“all-american bitch” continued this trend, focusing on the contradictions that are a part of womanhood. As Rodrigo sang out, “I’m a perfect all-american bitch / with perfect all-american lips / and perfect all-american tits,” a pair of bright red lips sang along behind her, illuminating the contradictory reality of being a woman — of being expected to feel nothing yet feel grateful, and to be pretty, yet sexy, yet also classy.

The final song of the set and the second of two encores, “get him back!,” was a beautiful end to Rodrigo’s performance. Balancing the yearning to get back together with an ex alongside the desire to get revenge and move on, Rodrigo sang into a red megaphone, “I wanna get him back / I wanna make him really jealous, wanna make him feel bad.” Playing up the song’s range of emotion, Rodrigo’s vocal delivery aptly portrayed the humor, anger, and heartbreak within the track, ending the concert on a thrilling note as purple and blue star-shaped confetti rained down on TD Garden.

Rodrigo’s performance was captivating, featuring a variety of sonic textures, detailed choreography, passionate vocals, and stunning visual backdrops. Rodrigo spilled her guts in Boston, and her pop stardom is sure to bring her back soon.

Packers-Eagles in Brazil: NFL exploited this loophole in broadcasting rules to schedule rare Friday game

The league will be holding an opening week friday game for the first time in 54 years.

gettyimages-1778051996.jpg

The NFL's first game ever in Brazil is finally set. Two months after announcing that the Philadelphia Eagles would be serving as the home team in Brazil, the NFL revealed on Wednesday that their opponent will be the Green Bay Packers for the game, which will kick off on Friday, Sept. 6.

The fact the game is being played in Brazil isn't the only unique thing about the game. It's also notable the game will be played on a FRIDAY in Week 1. The reason that's notable is because the game will mark the first time in 54 years that the NFL has scheduled a Friday matchup during the opening week of the season.

The last time it happened came in 1970 when the Rams beat the Cardinals , 34-13, in a game that was played on a Friday night in Los Angeles.

One reason there's been such a huge gap between Friday games is because it's not easy for the NFL to schedule a Friday game during the regular season. As a matter of fact, the only reason it's happening this year is because the league is taking advantage of a broadcasting loophole.

Under the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, the NFL isn't allowed to televise any games on Friday or Saturday from the second weekend in September through the second weekend in December (Those two days have been earmarked for high school and college football ). This is why you don't see any Saturday games on the NFL schedule until late in the season.

So what does that mean for this year?

The NFL always kicks off the season on the first Thursday after Labor Day. If Labor Day falls on Sept. 3 or later, then the first NFL weekend will be the second weekend of September and Friday games won't be permitted, but since Labor Day is on Sept. 2 this year, that opened the door for the NFL to play on Friday (Sept. 6).

If you're wondering how the NFL was able to play a Black Friday game in 2023, the league also took advantage of a loophole in the broadcasting rules to make that happen. Under the Sports Broadcasting Act, the NFL is ALLOWED to schedule a Friday game  as long as a substantial portion of the game is over by 6 p.m. local time , which is why the Dolphins and Jets kicked off at 3 p.m. ET on Black Friday in 2023.

With Labor Day set to fall on Sept. 1 in 2025, the NFL could conceivably play another Friday opener in another foreign country to start the season.

For the Brazil game, the NFL will likely put it in prime time, but the official kickoff time likely won't be announced until the schedule comes out in May.

For now, here's what we know: The Eagles will be heading to São Paulo, Brazil, to open their season against the Packers in a game that will kick off on Friday, Sept. 6 and streamed exclusively on Peacock .

The game will mark just the third time since 2010 that the NFL has held a game on a Friday.

‘Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion’: 5 Takeaways

Former employees of the brand, a Gen Z fashion favorite, recount race and size discrimination in a new documentary on HBO.

Two young women — one in a camisole, the other in a tied T-shirt — pose against a whitewashed brick wall.

By Callie Holtermann

The clothing store Brandy Melville is known for selling diminutive, single-size pieces popular among Gen Z: linen short shorts, heart-print camisoles and sweatshirts printed with the word “Malibu.”

Behind its Cali-girl aesthetic is a business that mistreats teenage employees and cashes in on young women’s insecurities, according to “Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion,” a documentary released on Tuesday on HBO.

The documentary intersperses former employees’ accounts of racism and size discrimination while working in its stores with a broader look at the labor and environmental costs of the fast-fashion industry . The filmmakers said Stephan Marsan, the company’s mysterious chief executive, did not respond to several requests for comment.

Eva Orner, the documentary’s director, said in an interview last week that it was a challenge to get former employees on camera because so many were fearful of the company. Those who were included were identified by only their first names. “I’ve done a lot of stuff in war zones, and with refugees and really life-or-death situations, and people have been more comfortable being on camera,” she said.

Ms. Orner, an Australian who won an Academy Award for the documentary “Taxi to the Dark Side,” had not heard of Brandy Melville before producers mentioned the company to her in 2022 as a potential subject of investigation. The more she learned, the more she was disturbed by the brand’s cultlike following among teenage girls, who see it flaunted by celebrities like Kaia Gerber and Kendall Jenner.

“These are the values that are in this T-shirt: It is racism, it is antisemitism, it is exploitation,” Ms. Orner said. “I’m hoping parents watch this and are horrified.”

Here are five of the major claims made in the documentary.

The company’s business model is murky.

In some respects, Brandy Melville is similar to Zara, H&M and other retailers operating in the fast-fashion industry, which puts a premium on low-cost clothing manufactured on quick trend cycles. But its corporate structure is unusually “chaotic, messy and unclear,” Ms. Orner said.

Each Brandy Melville store is owned by a different shell company, while the trademark for Brandy Melville is owned by a Swiss company, Kate Taylor, the author of a 2021 Business Insider investigation into the company that informed much of the documentary, said in the film. And despite leading a brand that built its success in large part on Instagram, Mr. Marsan has next to no online presence.

Former Brandy Melville staff members said in the documentary that executives would sometimes ask to buy the clothes the employees were wearing so that the brand could replicate them. The company has been accused online of stealing designs from independent designers and was sued by Forever 21 for copyright infringement in 2016. (The case ended in a confidential settlement, according to court documents.)

It has stood by its ‘one size fits most’ policy.

The company offers the bulk of its clothing in just one very small size, which it describes as “one size fits most.” Mr. Marsan saw the policy as a way to keep the brand exclusive, according to former executives interviewed in the documentary, and criticism of the policy as confirmation that the strategy was working.

The film includes social media posts from customers saying they lost weight to fit into the brand’s clothing. Multiple former employees described struggling with eating disorders while working at Brandy Melville, and several said the pressure to be thin while working there affected their self-esteem.

One former employee said in the documentary that working in the store made her hate her body and feel generally insecure.

Former employees described discriminatory hiring practices.

The company went out of its way to hire thin, white women who were often recruited on the spot while shopping in its stores, employees said in the documentary. Some said they were required to take daily full-body photos that were sent to Mr. Marsan, who sometimes fired them if he did not like the way they looked.

White employees were more likely to be assigned to the sales floor, while people of color were placed in less visible roles in the stock room, according to three former employees.

Former executives of Brandy Melville filed two lawsuits containing “serious allegations of racism” that were denied by the company in preliminary court filings, said Ms. Taylor, the reporter. One of the executives said in the documentary that his store in Toronto was closed by Mr. Marsan because it was frequented by people of color.

Company executives exchanged racist and antisemitic messages in a group chat.

Senior leadership shared Hitler memes, pornographic images and racist jokes in a group chat called “Brandy Melville gags,” according to Ms. Taylor and two former executives interviewed in the documentary. One screenshot shown in the film features a skeletal woman wearing a sash that reads “Miss Auschwitz, 1943.”

Mr. Marsan, his brother, store owners and members of the company’s production team in Italy were all in the chat, according to one former store owner.

The group chat featured heavily in Ms. Taylor’s Business Insider article. “The evil genius of Brandy is that when this exposé came out, they didn’t do anything” except for briefly disable comments on their Instagram page, Ms. Orner said. “They just went on, business as usual.”

The company may reflect broader patterns of exploitation in fast fashion.

Ms. Orner argued that Brandy Melville was also a case study in the way fast fashion can exploit workers and contribute to environmental waste.

The company’s supply chain is opaque, but much of its clothing is manufactured at a factory in Prato, Italy, that employs Chinese immigrants, Ms. Orner said. Prato is home to several factories for fast-fashion companies, some of which have exploitative labor practices, Matteo Biffoni, the city’s mayor, said in the documentary. (He did not comment on whether this was true of Brandy Melville’s factory.)

The filmmakers also traveled to Ghana, where unwanted clothing items from the United States and Europe pile up in heaps and clog waterways. Brandy Melville’s business model involves churning out inexpensive, trendy items that are likely to be discarded in this way, Ms. Orner said, and shipping them out to influencers in bulk, in exchange for free promotion.

“You can’t make a film about fashion without showing the exploitation of pretty much everyone, from the workers, through to the models, through to the retailers to the consumers,” Ms. Orner said. “Everyone’s being exploited.”

Andrey Rublev Australian Open

The ATP Monte Carlo 2024 edition signals the beginning of the European clay court Masters 1000 series. It is a jam-packed draw with almost all top players competing. As ever, we at LWOT preview and predict matches scheduled for Day 4.

ATP Monte Carlo Day 4 Predictions

Ugo humbert vs zhizhen zhang.

Head to head – Humbert 1-0 Zhang

Ugo Humbert is having a decent 2024 season having already won two titles. The Frenchman is a solid player on the clay as well but hasn’t quite lit up the courts as he has on the hard courts. He takes on Zhizhen Zhang, who played a good match to win his first round. While not much will separate the two from the baseline, Humbert’s powerful serve should help him put his forehand into play a lot easier and that will prove crucial. Prediction: Humbert in 2

Roberto Bautista Agut vs Hubert Hurkacz

Head to head – Bautista Agut 3-2 Hurkacz

Interestingly, in their previous five meetings, they have never met on the clay. Hubert Hurkacz would be feeling great after his win in Estoril last week and the tight first round win here should put him in a battle hardened state. He faces Roberto Bautista Agut, the veteran Spaniard who is showing he still has a few years left in him. Bautista Agut has done well to qualify but currently, the Pole looks too strong both on serve and from the baseline. Prediction: Hurkacz in 2

Sumit Nagal vs Holger Rune

Head to head – Nagal 0-1 Rune

Holger Rune will be happy to be back on the clay . The Dane has had a middling season by his standards and these next few months may make or break his 2024 campaign. He takes on the qualifier from India, Sumit Nagal who has impressed with his fighting tennis this week. Rune will be wary of Nagal but once he hits his groove, there looks to be a gap in the shot quality and the Dane should triumph. Prediction: Rune in 2

Alexei Popyrin vs Andrey Rublev

Head to head – Popyrin 0-1 Rublev

This is an interesting match up. Andrey Rublev is a handful on clay but Alexei Popyrin strikes pretty big himself so the baseline rallies should be a treat to watch. The Australian generally doesn’t play his best on the clay which would easily be exploited by Rublev. Expect a tight match between the two with Popyrin starting strong but as Rublev finds his range, he should motor along quite nicely here this week. Prediction: Rublev in 3
