If you’re looking to join a mission trip in 2024 or 2025, we’ve outlined IVHQ’s most popular types of mission trips and all the information you need to know to find your perfect mission.

What is a mission trip?

A mission trip is an international volunteering opportunity centered around collaborative efforts with local communities to provide essential support where it is most needed. These trips can be either religious or non-religious in nature, aiming to uplift individuals, local communities, and natural environments across the globe. IVHQ offers inclusive volunteer abroad programs that welcome participants of all ages and life stages.

Through IVHQ’s diverse range of mission trips , individuals can make a tangible impact while fostering new friendships, discovering diverse cultures, and broadening their horizons—all while contributing to the well-being of those who require assistance the most.

Why do people go on mission trips?

Mission trips are a popular way to combine your desire to travel and see with world with your motivation to give back and make a difference in the world. While some people see mission trips as an opportunity to put their faith into action, others go on mission trips for a variety of non-religious reasons, including:

To make a difference: Many people go on mission trips make a positive impact in the world through providing support to communities in a range of different ways. This could involve volunteering to teach English , building schools or homes , providing medical care , volunteering with animals or supporting environmental conservation .

To gain a new perspective: Traveling to a new country and immersing yourself in a different culture can be a life-changing and transformative experience. Mission trips allow you to see the world with fresh eyes and gain a better understanding of different cultures and ways of life.

To meet new people: Mission trips offer an opportunity to connect with people from all around the world. International volunteers work together towards a common goal, often forming life-long friendships and connections along the way.

To get out of your comfort zone : Mission trips are an opportunity to discover a new sense of purpose by stepping out of your comfort zone, discovering new countries and cultures, and living like the locals. This can be equally challenging and rewarding! Taking a mission trip is an opportunity to growth as person, discover your strengths and weaknesses and redefine your purpose in life.

While people go on mission trips for a variety of reasons, at the heart of it is a desire to make a positive impact on the world, connect with others and build a better future together.

Quote from IVHQ Volunteer Ruth Cartwright - Childcare in Sri Lanka

I recently returned from a mission trip to Sri Lanka and it was everything I dreamt it would be. I lived with a family in the jungle next to the longest river in the country, volunteering in a disabled childcare center. I was so happy with the project and had a wonderful - and sometimes challenging - experience. I would recommend this mission trip to anyone who wants to travel alone.

How much does it cost to go on a mission trip?

The cost of going on a mission trip varies depending on the destination and duration of the trip. IVHQ makes mission trips accessible to volunteers worldwide through affordable volunteer program fees and flexible durations.

For example, the cost of a 2-week mission trip with IVHQ to Tanzania is US$415, while a 4-week trip to India is US$585. These costs cover accommodation, meals, airport pick-up, and in-country support from IVHQ’s local team.

Additional costs that volunteers need to consider include the IVHQ registration fee , airfares, travel insurance, and any necessary visas or vaccinations. However, IVHQ provides detailed information and support to help volunteers prepare for their mission trip and manage these additional costs.

It’s worth noting that IVHQ also offers a range of fundraising ideas and resources to help volunteers cover the costs of their trip. For example, volunteers can create a fundraising page via IVHQ’s fundraising partner and share it with friends and family to collect donations.

IVHQ’s fees are transparent and inclusive, making it easy for volunteers to plan and budget for their trip without breaking the bank.

BOOST MISSION TRIPS

Building a mission trip that takes a group of students to new places and accomplishes effective, responsible ministry can be an enormous task. It demands time, resources, connections, meticulous planning, administrative support, and so much more. And thus, Boost Mission Trips was born! We hope to lift the burden of planning and organizing mission trips so that leaders are free to invest in students and the ministry at hand. Every trip is customized to fit student groups and to make sure your efforts are meeting real needs! We also realize that the 5-7 week mission trips that we offer through Royal Servants aren’t for everyone; therefore, we also provide shorter, individual mission trips for students during January and the springtime!

College Mission Trips

Expand your faith, serve together..

When it comes to college mission trips, students are looking for opportunities to make a real impact in the communities they serve. At Praying Pelican, we believe there is no better way to do that than by following the three pillars our trips are built on: genuine partnerships, long term relationships, and sustainable ministry.

We start by partnering your college students with a local church and submitting to that church's leadership. By starting there, you can be assured the work done during the week matches the real needs in that community. Ministry done in accordance with local leadership means that sustainability is within reach, with the local church being empowered to continue the ministry once your team returns home.

Due to the wide variety of partnerships we have across the US and internationally, we can also offer some real-life applications of what students are learning in the classroom on their college mission trip. Feel free to be creative, and we can design a trip around applying academic disciplines to impact the Kingdom in specific and tangible ways.

We see great value thinking in the long-term, and encourage our teams to return year after year to deepen the relationships formed during that first mission trip. Contact us today to connect with one of our missions consultants and begin planning the mission trip of a lifetime for your college students!

MINISTRY OPTIONS

There are ways for everyone to serve.

Children's Ministry

Minister to children through leading kids' clubs, Vacation Bible School, puppet shows, crafts, Bible stories, sports, skits, and games.

Service Projects

Provide tangible support through your work on various projects from painting, roofing, cement work, tiling, or whatever projects your local partner identifies in the community.

Church Ministry

Worship alongside a local church and participate by providing special music, sermons, testimonies, or help lead Sunday School.

Sports Ministry

Use sports such as soccer, basketball, Frisbee, volleyball, or any large-group game as a platform for building relationships and sharing the gospel.

Prayer Ministry

Bless communities through times of intercession during prayer walks or pray with local churches at a prayer meeting.

School Ministry

During the school year, your team could minister at local schools by leading devotions, tutoring students, observing classes, or participating in recess.

Mercy Ministry

Be the hands and feet of Christ as you visit and minister to those that others may have forgotten in orphanages, hospitals, prisons, and senior centers.

Assist the local church in outreach by handing out Bibles, street evangelism, door-to-door visits, or sharing the gospel through community movie nights.

Youth Ministry

Connect directly with youth in the community by leading a youth rally, fellowship night, or worship.

College student mission trips, mission trips for college students.

Campus Groups and Church College Ministries often come to In Motion asking for help with the logistics of international mission trips. Most trips are a bear to plan, especially for larger groups (have you checked in 22 people at 1am for a United flight?) and the leg work just isn’t desirable ontop of your day job.

In Motion loves to help with your college student mission trip because one of the most powerful forces there is, is a young person with a vision to extend help and hope to others. The passion that is present with college mission trips is unrivaled and we love to be down in the dirt with that kind of trip. College students often are easy to train and willing to learn- making them prime world-changers.

Spring Break Mission Trips

Mission trips during spring break for college students are an exciting and purposeful way to spend your spring break. Many college students are accustomed to traveling on spring break as many residence halls are closed and cafeteria services limited. These trips are hard to plan due to the quick schedule of events that needs to transpire during that week but are easily done here in the office.

Summer Break Mission Trips

Mission trips over the summer are usually a lot easier to scheduel since the time restraints aren’t quite as prevelant. Student schedules, however, are usually much harder to align as they are typically going back home to a full event list. College ministries in churches usually try to plan their trips during this time as to garuntee minimal overlap with school and study functions.

Winter Break Mission Trips

Over the winter break has been a popular option as the break tends to be long enough for a mission trip and to still get to see family. These college student mission trips tend to work best for groups with students from the same school so that the finals schedule and the return date in Janurary is consistent.

Planning College Mission Trips

Mission Trips for young adults are often harder to plan than other groups. They aren’t teenages anymore who often have parents and youth leaders who need to create a mission trip that might be considered  safer . And they aren’t older adults who can be accustomed to luxuries like sleeping in beds every night and hot showers.

College Studnets often have deep passions for what they want to do while serving in other countries. For group leaders, it is important for you to consider these passions for thier mission trip. Meanduring through a forest to a remote village isn’t too far off from what most college students expect but planning that is often a real struggle. How does a group leader like yourself find a remote village and then develop a course of action for getting to it and offering effective ministry?

“ It was very organized. I loved training and the dramas we learned. Treasure hunting was great and really brought us together. Beth is amazing ... Such a great trip with great leaders! Anonymous, 2019 Clemson University, FCA
“ This trip has been the highlight of my 'Charis Experience' and it has been so awesome to put the foundations of life and the Word into action and to minister healing Truth, and Holy Spirt power into others! Adam M., 2019 Portland Charis Bible College
“ This organization is amazing and provides details and plans that could never have happened without y'all connecting us to your people in Costa Rica. Providing us with the Sanchez's who then provided so many adventures, advice, and connections to our team was huge. The thing that impacted me the most was the jungle day because it showed us the struggles that other people groups have in getting to worship. The Sanchez family was amazing and I am incredibly grateful. Cam, 2019 Clemson University FCA
“ In Motion provided fantastic leadership for our Charis Bible College mission trip to Costa Rica; Cindy on the trip and Kenzie for training. I have been on a lot of mission trips but the focus and passion and structure provided by In Motion raised the students' experience to a whole new level. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. 7 Ways to Prepare Your Church’s Small Groups for Summer

Insights | Church Life & Ministry | Apr 8, 2024

small group hanging out by the lake in the summer

Don’t lose sight of the fact that your groups need to prepare for the summer months when attendance typically declines for a bit.

By Ken Braddy

When spring arrives, churches get busy. Mother’s Day, graduation, student and kids summer camp signups, VBS promotion, and an impending summer mission trip compete for the attention of members and guests. In the midst of this busyness, don’t lose sight of the fact that your groups need to prepare for the summer months when attendance typically declines for a bit.

As summer approaches and the days get longer, now is the time for savvy groups and their leaders to cut through late-spring distractions and prepare for a different season of group ministry . Now is the time to maximize the potential June, July, and August bring.

1. Share the teaching responsibilities

Summer is a great time for recruiting people to teach single sessions (or perhaps even a month-long series of studies). With many group members away on vacation throughout the summer, attendance drops as people’s attendance patterns become increasingly non-linear. That becomes a perfect time for people to spread their wings and teach during a time when it feels safer to them (attendance usually declines through August, then rebounds in September).

A group with smaller attendance doesn’t feel as intimidating to teach as a larger one does. Group leaders can include others in a teaching rotation, giving the group leader some rest and helping people discover they are more capable than they think when it comes to leading a Bible study group.

2.   Plan several fun fellowships

Summer movies, barbecues, baseball games, golf outings, a day at the lake, and day trips to places in your area can be fun diversions and occasions to gather members and potential members. Summer has a fun, relaxed feel and is the perfect time to get creative.

Don’t wait for a single occasion when everyone can get together. Instead, schedule multiple events, knowing that events may not be as well-attended as you’d like, but over the course of the summer they will give people options and will maximize participation overall. Having multiple opportunities for fellowship will ensure that at least one or two of the events fits the schedules of your group members. Encourage your group’s fellowship leader or someone in the group to present a list of summer activities, including dates and locations of events, sometime in mid-May.

summer mission trips for college students

3 .  Contact chronic absentees

Every group has them—people who are absent more than they are present. Summer months can be spent contacting people you haven’t seen in a while. One thing that sets apart a healthy Sunday School or small group ministry from a struggling one is a commitment to care for every person.

Summer is a good time to make porch visits because of the hours of additional daylight. It’s also a good time to call and check on people who have gone AWOL. If you’re a group leader, this isn’t something to do alone. Instead, divide up absentee’s contact information among willing group members and allow others to play a part in a summer reclamation ministry.

4.   Enlist an apprentice teacher

Summer months are the perfect time to recruit a member of your group to become the group’s apprentice leader . By late August and early September, family vacations will be over, and people settle into their post-Labor Day routines. Churches often provide training and encouragement in August around back-to-school time. When a potential apprentice knows he can expect support and training, it’s a lot easier for him to say yes to the opportunity to co-lead the group.

5. Clean up your meeting space

Why not use the summer months to do some belated spring cleaning? Most on-campus classrooms tend to accumulate items that aren’t needed, and truth be told, too many classrooms have become more cluttered than they should be. Take down charts, maps, and other posters that have been on the walls for a while. Throw away unused items and clean up tabletops and cabinets that collected all sorts of items over the course of the year.

You may not think your space looks junky, but your guests do. A fresh coat of paint or some carpet cleaning could make all the difference. Work with your pastor or staff leader to discover how the church might be able to help.

6. Establish a summer of local mission projects

While your church probably has a mission project of some kind, many people can’t go out of state or overseas. If you prepare now, your Bible study group could make a real difference in your community by scheduling a local mission project each month.

Would your group serve at a crisis pregnancy center, or perhaps at a food pantry ministry? Would your people be excited to adopt a school close to your church’s campus and paint the playground, trim bushes, or spread new mulch in their flowerbeds? The sky’s the limit. Get creative, but get going. The time to prepare for this is right now.

7. Encourage group members to leave your group

What? Leave your group? The simple answer is yes . Summer is when church staff are searching for new group leaders in all age groups. Remember that the goal of your Bible teaching ministry isn’t to have the largest group on the church campus, or for your group members to grow old together. The real goal is to help your church in its mission of making disciples.

The preschool, children, student, and adult ministries of your church will need new group leaders to serve all kinds of members in your congregation. Perhaps you could even start new groups to reach underserved people groups inside and outside your church. Encouraging people in your group to leave and serve others as group leaders themselves is a game-changer in most congregations. If you’re a group leader, have a “catch and release” mentality when it comes to people, and if you must hold onto them, please do so with a loose grip.

If you’re not careful, summer will come and go and you’ll have missed an opportunity to prepare your group for greater things. Don’t head into summer with a business-as-usual mindset. Instead, see the potential that summer months present to groups, and take full advantage of them.

College student should go to summer camp

Dear Amy:  I’m a sophomore in college. My girlfriend and I met on campus at the beginning of the school year and have been together for six months (we’re both women).

We’re making plans for this summer – we’re both looking into working at a beach resort near our college.

Every summer I go to a reunion at my summer camp. This is a camp I went to for most of my childhood and through my teens. I was a counselor there for three years. The reunion week is a time when we former campers go back to camp to perform some maintenance tasks and help to prepare the camp for the summer.

I really enjoy doing this work and I like seeing my fellow campers and staff. It’s a really special experience for me.

My girlfriend is having a tough time with my decision to take this week away this summer. She says she will miss me too much and she is heavily hinting that I shouldn’t do it.

I’m wondering what you think.

Camper for Life

Dear Camper:  I think your girlfriend is really into you. I also think she is trying to manipulate and control you.

A week apart can seem like a very long time when you are in the first throes of attachment. But – that’s the way it goes.

Your girlfriend should not pressure you to forgo something that is so important to you.

This is part of your life, and your attachment, service and commitment to this place and these people is an important part of who you are.

A person who loves and respects you should on some level also celebrate this aspect of your life and character.

This is a bit of a test of your girlfriend’s maturity, sense of perspective, and her overall respect for you. So far, she’s failing.

If she really pours on the pressure for you to drop this week-long commitment, then you should consider taking a vacation from this relationship. Do not cave.

Dear Amy:  I am a man in my 20’s, exclusively dating my girlfriend for the last three years. We are very compatible and are talking about moving in together.

I have met her family members a few times socially but have never spent much time with them.

Recently we took a trip to her hometown and stayed with her folks. Her parents seem very nice, and as far as I can tell they approve of me. We spent four days there and had a nice time.

More: Single man wants relatable advice

More: Retired man wants to smell, not plant, the roses

I’m a little concerned because while we were there I felt like my girlfriend wasn’t very nice to her mother. She acted very irritated by her mother and was snapping at her. She seemed to react to her grandmother the same way – impatient and bordering on rude. I witnessed this in person and I’ve also heard her be this way with her mother on the phone.

Lately I have to admit that she seems to be treating me a little bit this way, too. When she is bothered or irritated, she snaps and is very short with me.

I really did not like seeing her this way with her mother, I don’t like being treated this way, and I’m wondering if this is a red flag about our future.

Dear Snapped At:  Mothers and daughters sometimes share a tricky dynamic. You’re not likely to influence a lifetime of feelings between your girlfriend and the women in her life, but adults are supposed to be able to control their behavior.

So call her on this. When she snaps at you, call her on it.

And the next time you two are having one of those conversations where you’re discussing each other’s foibles and failings, you should tell her how it strikes you when you witness her being impatient and rude toward her mother and grandmother.

Yes, I’d say that this behavior is a red flag, but it is also behavior your girlfriend can change – and she should absolutely be willing to work on it.

Dear Amy:  “Tired Boyfriend” reported that his girlfriend, “Chrissy,” had quit her job before Christmas and now only wants to be a “stay-at-home girlfriend.”

You missed the most obvious point: Chrissy is clinically depressed.

Your response, “We all want to be a stay-at-home girlfriend. But life doesn’t work that way,” was heartless.

Upset Reader

Dear Upset:  I’m not a clinician and would never attempt to diagnose anyone based on a shred of subjective information.

You probably shouldn’t do that, either.

How do I apply for EM’s Summer Ministry Internship?

Step 1: APPLY ONLINE

Step 2: Our Missions Program staff reviews all applications as they are received and follows up with a quick initial phone call to applicants who meet the internship qualifications. After this call, our staff determines if applicants qualify for a final video interview . NOTE: Due to a high volume of applications, we will be following up with applicants on an as-needed basis.

Step 3: An initial number of strong candidates will be offered positions shortly after an interview, with our full Summer Staff being offered positions no later than the end of February. (NOTE: the total number of interns needed will be based on the number of volunteer groups who sign up to serve next summer, which will not be solidified until the end of February). We will do our best to keep you in the loop as we review applications, conduct interviews, and offer positions to applicants.

What are the requirements to apply for this position?

Internship applicants must be at least one year out of high school and have past job (or significant responsibility) experience . Preferred candidates will be quick learners who possess strong leadership abilities, good communication skills, and the ability to problem-solve and work with a team . Intangible skills like commitment, perseverance, resilience, and the ability to work hard all make great EM Summer Ministry Interns. If that sounds like you, we want you to apply!

What is the general timeline for the Summer internship position?

November - February: EM Summer Staff candidates are interviewed and selected.

March - April: EM’s Summer Missions Program details are finalized and interns are notified of their specific placement and timeframe.

Late May: Mandatory 5-day training event in West Michigan for all EM Summer Interns.

Late May - Early August: EM Summer Interns lead mission trips in teams of 3-4 people for 6-11 weeks in communities across the U.S. and beyond. (NOTE: Some interns will have a 3-4 week gap between the training week and the start of their internship service.)

*All dates are subject to change. We recommend completing your application as early as possible!

What does this “internship” entail?

The EM Summer Ministry Internship is a leadership position! With helpful training and external support from EM full-time staff, each Summer Staff team (made up of 2-4 interns) is empowered to collectively lead EM week-long mission trips. You won’t make coffee runs or sit on the sidelines watching others. You will learn and grow by doing and leading every single day. So, you can call it an “internship”, but EM Summer Staff positions come with more responsibility and opportunity than a traditional internship. For that reason, we prefer to call our EM Summer Staff positions a job, and we hope those hired see it as one too. (Hopefully, it's your most rewarding job so far!)

EM Summer Staff members will fill 1 of 3 roles within an EM Missions Community: Trip Coordinator, Construction Coordinator, or Outreach Coordinator. Collectively, you and your Leadership team will be responsible for preparing for and executing all practical aspects of running mission trips in your community, handling administrative tasks (managing weekly budgets, creating schedules, etc.), and building and deepening community partnerships and relationships .

→ READ THE FULL 2024 JOB DESCRIPTION

What are the benefits of the EM internship?

You will be amazed at what you learn and take away from your time serving—personally, spiritually, and practically. Experience Mission interns are exposed to full-time ministry and missions firsthand. If you’re considering a life path in full-time ministry or non-profit work, this experience will help you determine which aspects are a good fit for you as you balance building new relationships, details, and logistics of group management, serving others in a healthy way, and more. EM interns also gain valuable leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills by diving in and taking on the responsibility needed to make mission trips happen. You will grow as a person, as a leader, and in your capacity to love and care for others in all aspects of your life.

What will my “intern team” look like?

Each Summer Staff team consists of 3-4 interns working together within an EM Missions Community to coordinate all logistics for volunteer groups serving on week-long mission trips. EM Summer Staff members will fill 1 of 3 roles: Trip Coordinator, Construction Coordinator, or Outreach Coordinator. As a member of EM Summer Staff, you will have your own specific role and responsibilities, but will also work together on many details and tasks necessary to make trips happen each week. Each Summer Staff team is connected with a member of EM’s full-time staff (the “Community Coordinator”) who will serve as a guide and lifeline throughout the summer, available for community questions, problem-solving, and emergencies if they arise.

How does EM equip interns to succeed in this position?

We want to do everything we can to help you succeed during your internship! This starts with a two-part training for all Summer Interns. The first half is a 5-day, interactive training event in West Michigan led by EM’s full-time staff for EM Summer Staff serving in communities all across the U.S. and beyond. This week is interactive, engaging, and fun, as we share our philosophy of missions and ministry, best practices for leading service-learning trips, and work through potential pitfalls. It is also a great time to get to know your fellow interns (people who are passionate about this work like you!) and worship together as a big group.

The second half of your training happens in the field. The week before your first mission trip groups is filled with hands-on, on-site job training in the community led by the EM Community Coordinator. You will meet EM’s local partners, walk through the logistics of a typical week and learn everything you need to know to hit the ground running when your first groups arrive.

Who do EM Summer Interns report to (or reach out to for guidance)?

You will be entrusted and empowered to make your own decisions and problem-solve as a team, but you are never alone if things do not go as planned! Once your work officially starts, the EM Community Coordinator assigned to your community will check in with your team each week , helping your team debrief each experience and prepare for what’s next. Your EM contact will also be available throughout the week for community questions, problem-solving, and emergencies if they arise.

Are there additional requirements for hired EM Summer Staff members?

Full requirements are outlined on the official JOB DESCRIPTION , but it is important to note a few requirements you may not be thinking about. For the safety of all involved in EM missions programs, all Summer Interns are required to have:

  • An up-to-date driver's license (valid through the end of your internship)
  • Proof of medical insurance
  • Current First Aid Certification
  • Current CPR Certification

These can be obtained after you are hired, but must be completed before the 5-day training event in late-May.

How much will I get paid as an EM Summer Minsitry Intern?

EM Summer Staff are each paid a weekly stipend of $300/week throughout the duration of service, including training weeks. Additionally, all living expenses (food, lodging, transportation) will be covered while interns are serving in the community and during training weeks, and all interns will be provided with a travel stipend that covers a large portion of the cost to travel to/from training and each intern's service community ($600 for most U.S. interns, $800 for those serving in the Navajo Nation or internationally).

Interns were also given a platform and resources to fundraise additional financial support for the duration of their service with EM if you desire. (See next question!)

Am I able to fundraise any additional support?

Yes! EM Summer Staff have the opportunity to fundraise support alongside your weekly stipend. This is an opportunity to invite family and friends into serving alongside you by giving financially. To kickstart the process, you will have access to helpful fundraising resources and a personal online donation profile on the EM website. Our staff includes many experienced fundraisers who can help you get started. This is a great option if you need to make a specific amount of money each summer, but still want to pursue a meaningful internship experience instead of a 9-5 job.

Will I have to pay for anything myself during this internship?

Not very much! All living expenses (food, lodging, transportation) will be covered while you are serving in your community and during training weeks. You will only have to pay for personal items and any additional food/snacks you choose to purchase on your own.

You will be responsible for your own travel to EM’s training event in West Michigan and getting to/from your community of service, but EM provides each intern with a travel stipend to cover most of this cost! (See “How much will I get paid” above). You will be required to both arrange and initially pay for these expenses on your own, regardless of the stipend amount.

Am I able to receive college credit through this internship?

People have done this in the past, and it depends on the requirements of your school and your own initiative to make it happen! We are happy to fill out evaluations from schools upon request. You are responsible for contacting your academic advisor to find out the necessary requirements in order to receive credit.

Where do EM Summer Ministry Interns serve?

Experience Mission currently facilitates short-term mission trips in over 15 different communities across the U.S. and around the world. EM Summer Staff Interns primarily lead trips in the U.S. (with a few exceptions) throughout the Summer months. While communities are subject to change, we plan to send EM Summer Staff intern teams to:

  • Navajo Reservation in Arizona & New Mexico
  • Pikeville & Beattyville, Kentucky
  • Richwood, West Virginia
  • New York City
  • New Haven, Connecticut
  • Savannah, Georgia
  • Costa Rica*
  • Puerto Rico*

*Interns serving in these communities must be fluent in Spanish. When applying, please indicate your ability to speak Spanish to be considered!

How are EM interns placed in communities?

We work hard to determine the best location and team fit for each hired EM Summer Staff member. We do take the preferences indicated on your application into consideration, but the ultimate decision rests on team dynamics, necessary skills, and many other factors that play a part in our final placement decisions. We ask all applicants to be willing to serve wherever they are most needed.

How likely is it I will serve in an international location?

EM interns primarily serve in U.S. mission trip communities. There are a few exceptions (the Bahamas, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico) but these international positions are extremely limited and require most applicants to be fluent in Spanish. If you speak fluent Spanish, please let us know in your application!

Will my friends or family be able to visit me?

This job will require your full focus while mission trip teams are present in your community, but family and friends are welcome to visit you during an off week or on a weekend, with the approval of your EM Community Coordinator. We expect EM Summer Staff to understand that having outside visitors may not be the best for your hosts, your staff team, or the community where you are serving. So, we simply ask that you be respectful and ask ahead of time if this is something you are considering.

When does the EM Summer Ministry Internship start?

All EM interns start in late May , with a 5-day training event in West Michigan. Some intern teams leave directly from training to begin their time of service. Other teams have a 3-4 week break after training before beginning their work in the field.

How long is the internship commitment?

All hired Summer Leadership Staff can expect to serve for 6-11 weeks , from late May to early August. If you have a strong preference for how long you would like to serve, please let us know on your application!

What does a typical week look like for EM Summer Interns?

Each week leading a mission trip team will start with preparation for the upcoming week (shopping for groceries and construction materials, planning work and outreach projects, etc.) beginning on Friday or Saturday and culminating in the volunteer teams’ arrival and orientation on Sunday evening. Once teams arrive, EM Summer Staff are responsible for almost every detail involving missions volunteers—work and service projects, connections with local Christian ministries, daily schedule, meals, morning devotionals, evening debrief, and more. Monday through Thursday each week are “typical” days, with breakfast and devotional time in the mornings, service or outreach projects and some learning opportunities during the bulk of the day, and dinner and debriefing in the evening. Most mission trips end after breakfast on Friday morning.

This can make for full days! But over and over, we have also seen how people who are willing to genuinely engage with partners, volunteers, and community members find a lot of joy and life amidst the busy schedule! Life-long bonds can form over the course of a whole summer in one place.

Do interns have any weeks off during the summer?

Hired interns will serve anywhere from 6-11 weeks during the summer. We don’t traditionally build in extended periods of time off, aside from weekends and a few hours throughout the week. However, there may be weeks in the middle of the summer when no volunteer groups have signed up to serve in your community. During these weeks, EM interns will be asked to stay in their community , using their time to rest, experience more of the culture and life of their community, and connect deeper with local partners and community members. This time is so valuable in making your summer successful! (NOTE: All interns will be paid $300/week throughout the summer, regardless of whether a given week includes leading volunteers or not.)

If there are dates during the summer when you are unavailable due to a prior commitment, please make this clear on your application and during the interview process. Time off for these types of commitments can be requested, but may not always be granted.

What is the core mission of Experience Mission?

EM exists to help people love and serve others like Jesus—sacrificially, holistically, and whole-heartedly—connecting volunteers to learning and service opportunities across the U.S. and around the world. We currently do this in 3 ways:

  • Engaging People to Serve EM connects people of all ages and backgrounds to go and participate in service and learning experiences that provide an opportunity to come alongside and serve those living in often-overlooked communities while building bridges across cultural, racial, and socio-economic divides.
  • Developing Leaders We provide growth and leadership opportunities for young adults who are passionate about living out their faith, concerned with justice and reconciliation, and who desire to understand what it means to live their mission in the world. (That includes this position!)
  • Empowering Communities EM builds up and empowers people around the world by coming alongside local visions, working together to discover and provide much-needed opportunities to grow and thrive, and committing to local program leadership. This is often accomplished by activating the generosity of volunteers and supporters around the globe.

What do EM trips look like?

We firmly believe the people we serve on mission trips are not our “mission project.” They are valuable creations of God with so much to offer. While it may be obvious that change needs to happen in certain communities, we believe change needs to happen in each of us as well. EM's approach to missions seeks to enter into these service and learning experiences in a healthy way. We believe there is a better way than forcing change or imposing our thinking, values, and beliefs on others.

→ EM’S APPROACH TO MISSIONS

What denomination is EM a part of?

Experience Mission is an inter-denominational Christian organization and is not directly affiliated with any specific denomination. Participants from all denominations are welcome on our service-learning mission trips. Our statement of faith, how we share the gospel, and how we engage people of different faiths can be viewed HERE .
