• My Experience Whale Watching in Juneau, Alaska

My first experience whale watching in Juneau, Alaska was seeing the majestic animals from a distance on a family cruise. I could never have imagined I’d get even closer to them as an adult. Over the course of my career working in Alaska I’ve been lucky enough to have some really close encounters with whales all over Alaska, but especially in Southeast Alaska.

Some of my favorite whale watching memories took place not far from Juneau, Alaska; in the small village of Port Protection. Living and working in the small fishing community it wasn’t uncommon to see humpback whales. Sometimes they would even follow the herring right into the towns little cove. But my favorite thing was listening to them blow and sing at night when I was soaking in a hillbilly hot tub under the stars. There was something about hearing them so close and not being able to see them that was powerful to me. So I suppose my favorite whale watching experience in Alaska was actually a whale listening experience!?

Juneau, Alaska, offers prime whale watching opportunities from May to September, with peak activity typically occurring between June and August. During these months, the waters are teeming with marine life, making it an excellent time to embark on a whale watching excursion. When is the best time to see whales in Juneau?

You can see whales in Juneau from April to November, but the best time for whale watching is June through August. In Late July, you begin to see Bubble Net Feeding, when 10-12 whales jump out of the water at once.

Juneau is a feeding ground for humpback whales, and there are so many whales that we are able to offer 100% guaranteed sightings.  The waterways attract the whales all summer long, before they make the long journey to the warming waters of Mexico and Hawaii to breed. There is also an opportunity to see Orca, commonly called Killer Whales, on these tours as well. Orca sightings are very rare as they are very transient and move quickly through the waterways in Southeast Alaska.

Welcome to our tour page! We are now accepting reservations for the 2024 summer season. Our tours operate, each year, from May 1st – September 23rd.

Juneau is a temperate rainforest and while we are always hoping for sun, sometimes it doesn’t show. But that won’t stop us from whale watching!

All tours include transportation from  the cruise ship docks in downtown Juneau to Auke Bay, where your tour will leave from.  We will also bring you back downtown after your whale watch. If you are staying at a local hotel or B&B and need transportation, we can also pick you up and bring you back to wherever you are staying.

On all of our tours, to date, we are proud to have seen at least one humpback whale! 

Standard 4hr Tour

This includes 3 hours on the boat and 1 hour of ground transportation to and from where you are staying. We will try to fill the boat–so if you are a party of two, you may have the chance to meet four other individuals while on the tour.

Our schedule is flexible daily–we will do our best to accommodate you–please email for our availability.

This tour is $220.00 total, per person.

Occasionally we are lucky enough to witness Humpback Whales feeding on small fish called Herring, at the surface of the water–this behavior is called Lunge Feeding and is always special to see. On tours it is uncommon to see this behavior and can usually be seen once or twice a week by captains.

This is our most personalized tour. This tour (from 1-6 passengers) comes with the guarantee that it will only be your party onboard and you are in control of what you want to see. This tour has two options to choose from:

• Option one: This tour is a private 4hr tour, with 3 hours on board the boat and 1 hour of ground transportation to and from where you are staying.
• Option two: This tour can be as long or a short as you want–this is our most personalized opportunity.

The boat price for a 4 Hour Tour is $1,150.00.  Every extra hour is $300.00 per hour.

The infamous Mendenhall Glacier can often be viewed from the water while we whale watch. With the Coastal Mountain Range in the background, this makes for a stunning photo opportunity.

If you decide to reserve with us, a 20% deposit will need to be paid to confirm your tour. Once paid, your deposit remains fully refundable up to 14 days prior to your scheduled tour date, regardless of the reason for cancellation. After arriving at the harbor there is a 100 yard walk down the dock to the boat–having a smaller vessel it also means that there are 2 large steps to get in and out of the boat. If this presents a problem for you, we will be happy to recommend a larger, more easily accessible tour company.

There are no alcohol, drugs or smoking (this includes e-cigarettes) allowed on the tour, at anytime. If, during the tour, a passenger’s behavior becomes harmful to the safety of anyone on board, the captain reserves the right to bring the boat back to the harbor at anytime.

Wildlife Viewing Opportunities

Humpback Whales

Juneau, Alaska, is home to some of the world’s most fantastic viewing of humpback whales! Our captains and naturalists are the best in the business and have a 100% whale sighting success. The humpback whale is a baleen whale, and one of the largest members of the rorqual family. Adult females average 49 ft (15m) in length and weigh approximately 35 tons, with adult males being slightly smaller.

Killer Whales

Adult male killer whales in the North Pacific may grow to a length of approximately 27 feet (8.2 m), whereas females grow to an average length of about 23 feet (7 m). Adult males may weigh almost twice as much as females, up to 13,300 pounds (6,000 kilograms). Killer whales are predominantly black in color with large white patches under the jaw and above and behind each eye.

Coastal Wildlife

Auke Bay and Gastineau Channel provide a myriad of wildlife viewing opportunities. The Don Statter Harbor, 12 miles from downtown at the intersection of the Back Loop Road and Glacier Highway, is a good place to look for harbor seals and bald eagles, with sea lions frequenting the area. The harbor is the departure point for many whale watching cruises. Harbor porpoise and other marine mammals and sea birds are frequently seen on trips to and from Auke Bay.

Visiting Juneau is a capital idea

Juneau is flanked by white snow-capped mountains, fields of blue ice, verdant green forests and frigid turquoise waters. It’s the perfect destination for travelers who love cozy small-town vibes, as well as those who seek extreme outdoor adventures. Long the land inhabited by the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people, the capital city of Alaska got its Western name and infrastructure during the Gold Rush. This waterfront community is an outdoor enthusiast’s haven, and boasts that it has more miles of trails and mining tunnels than road (of which there are just 190).

Make sure you pack your rain gear, as this city of 32,000 gets about 70 inches of rain a year, and around 235 days of precipitation. But no matter the forecast, locals and travelers alike will be out enjoying nature. As the Scandinavians say, “There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.”

The absolute must-see for most travelers is the Mendenhall Glacier. There are many ways to see the glacier, depending on your level of comfort. The West Glacier Trail is by far one of the best bangs for your buck. While it includes a little bit of scrambling (up a waterfall, for example), the payoff is worth far more than it will cost you to get there. The trail is 3.5 miles out and back, growing slightly longer each year as the glacier melts, and brings you right up to the face of the glacier. Since the glacier is constantly receding, it’s no longer possible to get directly on the ice using this route without an experienced guide and equipment. For less experienced hikers, Above and Beyond Alaska offers guided hiking tours and Alaskan Binoculars offers rides to the trailhead.

For a more family-friendly or accessible option, Nugget Falls Trail brings you around the other side of Mendenhall Lake directly to a massive waterfall with views of the glacier from a bit farther away. (The short, informational video in the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center is the cheapest tour of Juneau you’ll get.)

Liquid Alaska offers canoe tours that go across the lake to bring you to the face of the glacier. Or, if you’re feeling flush, you can charter a helicopter through Northstar , Coastal or Temsco Helicopters for a flightseeing tour that will land you on the glacier (tours cost $379 or more). Northstar’s Extended Helicopter Glacier Trek is the most adventurous tour for thrill seekers who want to maximize their time on the glacier, learn basic ice climbing techniques and explore more territory than the standard glacier trek tours. If you want to dogsled on a glacier, Temsco and Northstar both offer tours, both over $600.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing way to get up close to a glacier, take a full-day boat trip to Tracy Arm Fjord with Allen Marine Tours. Starting at $234, this seven-hour tour is an exceptional value and unforgettable experience. Enjoy cruising through a steep fjord, usually seeing whales, bears, eagles, harbor seals along the way. The trip culminates at one of the Sawyer Glaciers, which are often actively calving. Even if it’s cloudy or rainy, this trip is sure to be memorable and enjoyable — the glacier can look more blue when it’s overcast. If you’re looking for a shorter tour, several other companies offer two- to three-hour whale watching or city tours during the summer cruise ship season (check out Juneau Tours & Whale Watch and Allen Marine for options). If you’re seeking more water adventures, you’d be remiss not to try spotting whales and other wildlife as you ocean kayak in the Channel Islands State Marine Park on Above and Beyond Alaska’s kayaking with humpback whales tour.

For an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience, view brown bears up close and personal at Admiralty Island’s Pack Creek or Waterfall Creek, where U.S. Forest Service rangers accompany you as you view the animals in their natural habitat. The Tlingit people call this island “Kootznoowoo,” meaning “Fortress of the Bear,” for a reason. Sightseers are flown to the island by Ward Air . Both Bear Creek Outfitters and a new operator, Wild Coast Excursions , offer all-inclusive options starting at a thousand dollars a person, which includes permits, flights and other necessities.

If you’re more of a plant lover than animal lover, check out the upside-down tree gardens at Glacier Gardens . They also offer tours up the mountain in small trams during the summer season. A good place to see fireweed is along Point Bridget Trail. The drive out the road to this trail also makes for great views of the looming Chilkat Mountains. Cycling enthusiasts will enjoy Cycle Alaska’s 8.5-mile biking tour that stops at local breweries.

Another top-notch Juneau experience is cabin camping. You can rent cabins online; however, weekends can generally get booked up to six months in advance, so make sure to book far ahead of time. Most public cabins are in the backcountry and require hiking your gear out. However, some private cabins that can be rented are more accessible, such as those at the Shrine of St. Therese or on Airbnb. Nights at Eaglecrest Ski Resort’s cabin, Hilda Dam, during the winter, and a city cabin, Amalga, are among the most coveted reservations in town.

Good family activities include walking along Sandy Beach on Douglas Island. Ruins from the old mine that collapsed there give the beach a historic vibe, and informational signs along the way entertain and inform little ones. The Mount Roberts Tram usually runs during the summer cruise season, and recently started offering tours from an Alaska Native perspective, celebrating the resilience and perseverance of Alaska’s Native population. Families can rent strollers and other baby travel necessities like hiking backpacks, car seats and high chairs from Gear Up Baby .

Alaska Tales Whale Watching is seeking a full time Whale Watching Captain for the 2024 summer season in Juneau, Alaska.

Captains are responsible for the safe operation of daily whale watching tours, including basic vessel maintenance, accurate completion of daily logs, Whale Sense viewing compliance and training, safety speeches, basic crew training overseeing Deckhand/ Naturalist duties and setting a good example for wildlife viewing ethics and methods on the water. Season: May 1 to October 10. Schedule varies, 5-6 days a week minimum.

Job Requirements:

• 50 ton USCG Masters License 
• Strong outboard boat handling skills preferred
• Detail oriented, safety-oriented work ethic
• Must be team oriented and enjoy working with others
• Must exhibit excellent time management skills
• Capable of working long hours/flexible hours
• Capable of lifting 50 pounds
• Current first aid and CPR certification
• Current Marine Radio Operators Permit
• Subject to pre-employment and/or random drug testing

Can You Drive to Juneau, Alaska?

Despite being the capital city of Alaska, Juneau is unique in that it’s not connected to the rest of the state by a road system.

Nestled at the base of towering mountains and surrounded by the waters of the Gastineau Channel, Juneau is what’s known as a ‘roadless city.’

It is a city that’s as unique as it is beautiful. Nestled in the heart of the Inside Passage of the Alaska Marine Highway, it’s a place where mountains and glaciers serve as the backdrop to everyday life.

But there’s that weird catch – if there isn’t a road that leads directly to Juneau, how do you get there?
