Sunway Resort Review

Sunway Resort Reception

The Kuala Lumpur Sunway Resort is a big, 5 star hotel. I arrived quite late after flying into KLIA from Dubai with my 7 year old son. We were in love with the hotel before we even arrived thanks to many light displays and cool sculptures in the drive up to the hotel. It gives a great first impression!

This continued in the lobby area which has a very polished look and with the staff that were all attentive when we arrived.

Check-in was quick and easy and we were soon in our room.

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa Location

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa map

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa Address : Persiaran Lagoon, Bandar Sunway, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 47500

Sunway Resort Malaysia is in the perfect location if you want to have tons of fun at Sunway Lagoon. It’s right next door, and there is easy to access from here. You simply walk outside the hotel and right next door are escalators to take you to the Surf Beach entrance of Sunway Lagoon.

Sunway Lagoon entrance next to Sunway Resort

It’s also connected to the big Sunway Pyramid shopping mall which makes a stay here very easy. There are so many shops, entertainment and eating options.

There are two other Sunway hotels here too – the Sunway Lagoon Hotel and the Sunway Pyramid Hotel. However, there is no competition when it comes to Sunway Lagoon Hotel vs Sunway Pyramid Hotel vs Sunway Resort. Sunway Resort is by far the superior option.

We like staying in this area when we have a short stopover in Malaysia as an alternative to Kuala Lumpur.

Hotel Rooms

Sunway Resort Hallway

There is a huge range of room types from standard hotel rooms (called deluxe) to Sunway Resort suites and the amazing Sunway Resort villa options.

I have a separate section about The Villas Sunway Resort Hotel below as these are sometimes listed as their own hotel as they used to be branded that way. However, they are now part of the Sunway Resort and Spa Hotel.

One of the things I love about this hotel are the family room options. I wish more hotels had these! While there are deluxe, grand deluxe and club rooms perfect for couples, there are also family terrace and waterventure terrace room types that fit up to four people with two queen beds and have family friendly amenities.

The Waterventure rooms also have terraces that lead directly to the waterventure water play area (more about that below).

Sunway Resort Waterventure

All rooms have everything you would expect from a great hotel and are a decent size. You’ll find air-conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, desk area, flatscreen television, bathrobe and in-room safe. There’s a minifridge and water is provided.

For something more special, there is a range of suite options. These are generally bigger and offer a range of options like a private office area, club lounge access, minibar, gym equipment, karaoke, games consoles, multiple bedrooms and more. There is definitely a Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa suite that can suit anyone!

Since I was staying here with only one of my children, I opted for the deluxe room.

Deluxe Room

Entrance to our Sunway Resort Deluxe Room

On entry to my deluxe room, our Sunway Resort review found a fabulous room worthy of the 5 star rating.

The entrance hallway was quite long for a hotel room as the bathroom on the right was spacious. The bathroom had a big shower, toilet and great basin area.

Sunway Resort Deluxe Room bathroom

On the left was a big cupboard area with dressing gowns and slippers. The in-room safe was also here.

Next to this was space for luggage, drawers and shelves and then the room opened up to the main bedroom area.

Sunway Resort Deluxe Room

We had requested twin beds and these were on one side of the room with bedside tables on each side. Each side also had electronic controls for the lights, a USB point and an international power point. Perfect!

Next to the beds was a great lounge chair with foot stool, lamp and coffee table. Actually, I wrote most of this review sitting in this chair!

On the other side of the room was a long shelf which was super handy for spreading out our stuff. This also doubles as a desk area, and there was a chair here. Above this was a big flatscreen TV.

On the TV, we could access TV channels, information about the hotel, many movies and TV shows on demand and we could also cast to the TV.

Next to this area were the tea and coffee making facilities, a minifridge and bottled water and glasses.

Sunway Resort Deluxe Room view

The next morning when we woke up, we were excited when we looked out the window and saw Sunway Lagoon as pictured above. Perfect!

The room was quiet, clean and comfortable, and we enjoyed our stay here a lot.

The Villas Sunway Resort

sunway travel pyramid

As mentioned above, these villas are no longer branded as a separate resort and are part of Sunway Resort. The villas are separate villas though and not part of the main resort building.

These villas are beautiful and come in one and two bedroom options with separate living room and private outdoor area complete with a private pool. The outside area is also very green, and you’ll feel like you’ve left the city behind.

Guests also get access to an exclusive lounge with afternoon tea and evening cocktails as well as breakfast included.

Sunway Resort pool

There is a fabulous range of facilities at the Hotel Sunway Resort and Spa.

For a start, there is the Sunway Resort Hotel spa. This wellness centre has a range of massages and body treatments to choose from.

Once you have relaxed at the spa in Sunway Resort Hotel, you can head down to the great pool area. This is in lovely surrounds with waterfalls, greenery and sun loungers. There’s also a poolside bar and the Sunset Terrace where you can order something to eat. Or listen to the underwater speakers!

It’s a big pool and fantastic to enjoy. You can hear the fun at Sunway Lagoon below as well.

A few levels above is the separate Waterventure water playground pool. It’s perfect for families with younger kids. My 7 year old is tall and a little too old for it, but we still enjoyed hanging here.

There is also a great gym.

Sunway Resort Wonderland Explorers

Also for families, there is a kids club, Wonderland Explorers, with many activities for an extra charge. You can also consider visiting the Urban Farm which is the hotel’s rooftop hydroponic rooftop farm. There are workshops to learn about how this works as well as related topics like healthy eating, food waste and water management.

Sunway Resort Wonderland Explorers activity schedule

Of course, there is also the huge Sunway Lagoon theme park right next door. You can read all about it here.

You can also visit the connected Sunway Pyramid shopping mall to shop, eat or to do activities like ice skating, laser tag and karaoke.

 Sunway Pyramid shopping mall

Sunway Resort Hotel Restaurant And Dining Options

Sunway Resort Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill.

You definitely won’t go hungry at the Sunway Resort Kuala Lumpur.

The most famous place to eat here is the Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill. You can try out some of this famous multi-Michelin starred chef’s meals at this restaurant. I recommend you reserve a table in advance if you want to eat here. Unfortunately, this was a little out of our budget. One day!

There is also the brand new Gordon Ramsay Street Pizza technically in the shopping mall but connected to Sunway Resort and Spa.

There is casual, all day dining at the Sunset Terrace by the pool with pizza and international dining options or enjoy a burger at the Black Tap Craft Burgers and Shakes New York style restaurant.

Sunway Resort Sunset Terrace by the pool

The Resort Cafe is where you will find the Sunway Resort buffet with local and international options.

Finally, there is the Linkway Cafe for coffee, meals and snacks.

If you don’t want to eat inside the hotel, there are more than 170 food and beverage options at the connected Sunway Pyramid shopping mall. I promise, you won’t go hungry!

Final Words

I hope you have found this Sunway Resort Hotel Malaysia review useful, and it helps you work out whether this hotel is right for you or not.

My son and I loved our stay here. We stayed here at the end of a month long trip, and it was our favourite hotel. It was so comfortable, quiet, easy and fun. What more could you want?!

It made for the perfect couple of days between international flights for us, and we had lots of fun between the theme park, shopping centre and the hotel.

Top 10 Restaurants in Sunway Pyramid

  • June 1, 2019

Sunway Pyramid Sphinx at night

I studied at Sunway University, Kuala Lumpur before I moved to Melbourne. My accommodation is so near to Sunway Pyramid that I would go there pretty frequently to satisfy my cravings. As I am a true foodie, I have to keep doing my palate and belly a favour every day. There are so many restaurants in Sunway Pyramid – it’s always a hard decision to make on where to eat. So after trying many, MANY restaurants in Sunway Pyramid, this list is my top 10 restaurants in Sunway Pyramid that you have to try!

Hotpot Kitchen 麻辣香锅

Hotpot Kitchen spicy prawn noodles

This place was not around back when I was at Sunway University. It has become my favourite after my recent trip back to KL. The restaurant’s Chinese name is far more descriptive of what the restaurant really is. It is translated into “ Numbingly Spicy Fragrant Hotpot ”. It might sound scary, but the good news is there are so many things there for you to choose from! Don’t worry if you can’t handle the spice that well.

In Hotpot Kitchen, you select the ingredients that you’d like to include in your dish. The vegetables cost RM3.99 per 100 gram and the meat cost RM5.99 per 100 gram. After that, select how spicy you want it to be. For a Malaysian, the level 1 is spicy enough for my palate. I could go level 2 or 3 but I don’t know if I would really enjoy it.

Din Tai Fung 鼎泰丰

Din Tai Fung restaurants in Sunway Pyramid

If you haven’t known already, Din Tai Fung is a world-renowned dim sum restaurant. Some of the branches in Hong Kong and Taiwan have been awarded with 1 Michelin Star. It is well known for their soup dumplings (Xiao Long Bao 小笼包), dumplings (Jiao Zi 饺子) and also sour and spicy noodle (Suan La Mian 酸辣面) .

It can get quite expensive depending on what you order. However, if you are craving for some good soup dumplings, I highly recommend it.

Hai Di Lao Hot Pot 海底捞

Hai Di Lao Hotpot restaurants in Sunway Pyramid

Hai Di Lao is another famous hotpot shop that has earned its tremendous reputation from famous branches all over the world. There are 300 of them! To suit everyone’s taste, you can choose up to 4 soup bases. In Malaysia, Hai Di Lao offers a Malaysia-exclusive Laksa soup base . I strongly recommend getting this! Besides, there’s also a soup station so you can make your own soup base!

The con about Hai Di Lao Hot Pot is the waiting time. This is one of the few restaurants in Sunway Pyramid that you must queue for due to its fame. People are willing to wait up to 2 hours for the amazing service, fresh ingredients and flavoursome soup bases. They also provide board games to ease your wait. If you are thinking about going for lunch – get your queue number in the morning!

Fong Lye Taiwanese Cuisine蓬莱台湾料理

Fong Lye Taiwanese Cuisine Restaurant at sunway pyramid

This is my go-to when I’m too lazy to think what I want to eat. It serves Taiwanese comfort food – it doesn’t deviate that much from the flavours that I encounter when I was travelling in Taiwan. This is one of the restaurants in Sunway Pyramid that is still standing after so long. This definitely says something about the restaurant.

Get the Beef Noodle (niu rou mian 牛肉面), Sesame chicken rice vermicelli (麻油鸡面线), the sweet potato balls and the fried mushroom . They will blow your mind!

Go Noodle House 有间面馆

Go noodle house with juicy beef ball noodles

Go Noodle House has many branches in Malaysia and I am so happy that there’s one in Sunway Pyramid. I love pan mee, which is a specific type of flat noodle that has a slightly chewy texture to it. If you get the one with soup, your soup base can be chicken herbal or spicy. I love the chicken herbal souped pan mee because I like spicy base better with dry pan mee.

Try the beef balls here. They are incredibly juicy – it explodes in your mouth!

Hui Lau Shan 许留山

Well, this is not a restaurant but a dessert shop. It’s totally worth mentioning. I have not seen such complete dessert menu featuring mango in my whole life. I am a huge mango fan so I could stay here all the time.

Ippudo ramen with nori and pork slices

To be honest, I only knew about Ippudo after I relocated to Melbourne. The Ippudo in Melbourne was amazingly delicious. The tonkotsu ramen? I can eat it every single day.

I am so glad that Ippudo has decided to join the restaurant league of Sunway Pyramid. It’s not easy to find a good bowl of ramen in Malaysia. If you are craving for one, head to Ippudo. The flavours are as close as you can get without flying to Japan!

kyochon korean fried chicken restaurant in Sunway pyramid

KFC in my dictionary is not “Kentucky Fried Chicken” but “Korean Fried Chicken”. There is something magical about the fried chicken in Korea and I absolutely loved my experience in Seoul. I am so glad that Kyochon would be able to let me relive my Korean foodie travels.

It’s not too expensive. It’s RM 54 for 25 pieces of chicken (at the time of writing). I love the one with rice flour coating and the red pepper ones. They are very addictive. You’re warned. If you are too lazy to leave your bed, they offer delivery service as well!

Ole Ole Bali

ole ole bali restaurant in sunway pyramid

I am very glad that restaurants in Sunway Pyramid are very international. Ole Ole Bali features authentic Balinese flavours with some Malaysian twist. It is one of the finer restaurants in Sunway Pyramid so think of this place for a date night rather than a casual eat out (unless you are on a completely different social status).

Expect to pay around RM50-100 per person if you are dining here. Click here for the menu .

thai thai - where to eat at sunway pyramid

I remember I celebrated my birthday here – yes, I am truly in love with Thai cuisine. Thai Thai is one of the other higher end restaurants in Sunway Pyramid. Please get the deep fried siakap with mango salad. The price is a little steep but it’s worth it – trust me.

Happy eating at all the restaurants in Sunway Pyramid!

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

things to do in Moscow in one week

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

Moscow Subway, Russia

Moscow Metro, Russia

You are here

Why take a moscow subway ride.

The Moscow Subway is like a whole underground city that holds the world's largest collection of Stalinist Art.

This sophisticated 300-kilometer underground railway network transports Moscow commuters in style. With 14 separate lines that connect 222 stations (44 of which are the heritage sights), the Metro carries an average of 6.7 million people each day which is more than half of the city's population, but it is not merely a series of trains and tunnels.

The first Moscow Subway stations were opened on May 15, 1935, and were described as one of Stalin’s most extravagant architectural projects. The original 13 stations, along with many others that were built later, feature functional works of art, intended to depict a sort of “socialist paradise,” an extravagant reminder of the progress that the leadership of the Communist Party had given to the people of the city, promising a “radiant future” built with the hands of the proletariat.

Inside the Moscow Metro

The reflective marble walls, the bright colors, the high ceilings, and the opulent chandeliers at many of the more popular stops, however, are more reflective today of the architectural legacy that Stalinism left upon Russian culture. Indeed, the Metro in Moscow served as a prototype of other Soviet subways.

The Moscow Metro, beyond being a much-needed mass transit project, also was meant to serve as one of the world’s largest fallout shelters during the Cold War. Expanding from its role as civilian defense from air raids during the Nazi siege of Moscow, the train lines eventually spanned the city and were designed to be able to host its entire population (today at 11 million) in case of a nuclear attack.

Such plans as this have led to further rumors of a secret Metro, supposedly an extensive system built to transport the national leadership in times of war down deep tunnels that lead from the Kremlin and all government buildings to a secret city somewhere below Moscow’s Ramenki District.

Whether this is true or not, a special museum for visitors curious about such things was opened near the Taganskaya Metro Station, called Bunker 42, or the Cold War Museum.

For most visitors, the Metro experience will be one of the most memorable moments while touring the capital of Russia, with stations that are reminiscent of palaces. It is truly the mark of a great city that such sophistication can be found within something so simple as a mass transportation network.

A Brief History of the Moscow Metro

Train at Arbatskaya metro station, Moscow, Russia

There are many things for which Moscow is famous, and the metro is certainly one of the most prominent of them. The metro is the city’s beating heart. During peak hours, crowds of people pour out into the streets to the rhythm of the trains entering and leaving the stations. The metro is Moscow’s primary means of public transport; it’s also a monument to its turbulent history and vibrant present, and a crucial element and major constituent of its identity. You can’t understand Moscow without understanding its metro – this is why we’re introducing its brief history to you here.

Moscow’s metro is the most crowded in the world..

Moscow metro serves the largest number of passengers a day out of all the metro systems in the world : on weekdays this number goes up to nine million. It consists of 14 lines and 212 stations and has more than 360 km of tracks. Plus, 44 of these stations are cultural monuments. Why is that the case? And how did it all start?

Kiyevskaya metro station, Moscow

It all started with Stalin.

Elektrozavodskaya Moscow Metro Station, Russia.

What happened to the metro during the wars?

The Second World War had an influence on everything that happened in the country. The construction of the metro was no exception. Pro-socialist interior motifs were replaced with war-themed décor, the construction of new stations was delayed, and some of the old stations went out of service. Many of the stations served as air-raid shelters during the siege of Moscow in 1941. After the war, construction picked up again. The most iconic of the lines, the ring line, was opened. It traces the Garden Circle (one of the main avenues of the city). The ring makes changing lines wonderfully easy. It is marked brown in all the official metro plans. Rumour has it that it was never a part of the initial design, but that Stalin put a coffee mug on the provisional plans that left a mark in the shape and location of the current ring line, and that it was then constructed because nobody then dared to oppose the Leader’s note. The Cold War brought with it a reduction in both the metro’s budget and extravagance. The Cold War stations , located a little bit further from the centre, can be recognised immediately: they all look almost the same, with a row of columns running on both sides of the platform. The only difference between them is the colour of the marble or ceramic tiles on the walls.

What is happening with the metro now?

Nowadays, the Moscow metro is constantly expanding, with new stations added to the lines every year. 2016 was especially important in the life of the metro: it is when the second (on-land) circle line was open. The Moscow metro is also an important element of culture: one of the most popular contemporary Russian writers, Dmitri Glukhovsky , set his post-apocalyptic novels entirely in the metro. The metro is, figuratively and literally, the heart of Moscow. If you want to truly get to know the city, start from the metro.
