Our Location, Tauranga Marine Precinct Hub
We are located at 1 Den Place, Sulphur Point, Tauranga, situated on the water front in the new Tauranga Marine Precinct Hub operated by Vessel Works.
We are based on the water front in the new Tauranga Marine Precinct Hub operated by Vessel Works. The Marine Precinct is conveniently situated between the Sulphur Point Marina and the Tauranga Bridge Marina. We will be working alongside Vessel Works who will be operating a 350 tonne capacity travel-lift allowing large commercial and oversized pleasure craft to be hauled-out onto a hardstand to carryout water blasting, antifouling, painting and maintenance work. We have three large sheds on-site to carry out undercover boat work. Smaller commercial and pleasure craft usually use either the Tauranga Bridge Marina or the Sulphur Point Marina’s haul-out/hard-stand facilities. Hutcheson Boatbuilders have their own workshop situated on the Tauranga Bridge Marina hard-stand. The Tauranga Bridge Marina Travel Lift is capable of lifting vessels up to 35 tonnes with a beam of 5.5 metres. At Hutcheson Boatbuilders, we pride ourselves in providing good honest reliable shipwright work. Our customers see us as straight shooters and good genuine people to deal with. There is no room for anything else when you have to work in a small community by international standards. This is backed by being boat builders for more than 24 years (since 1993) in the Tauranga marine industry. So if you are looking at constructing a new vessel, carrying out general vessel repairs and maintenance, refitting your existing boat, any type of fibre glassing, require some interior cabinetry, any general engineering, require osmosis repairs, stainless steel work, a repaint or painting repairs, get that antifouling done, have your vessel groomed or any manner of shipwright work completed, then Hutcheson Boatbuilders can be trusted to give you value for money for your project.

TO CHECK ON COMMERCIAL SHIPPING ENTERING OR LEAVING THE HARBOUR : Call Tauranga Port Radio on VHF 12.
The entrance to Tauranga harbour is to the west of the 230 metre high Mount Maunganui, which is visible from many miles to seaward. The harbour entrance should be approached from the North East to avoid coming too close to Matakana Bank, which breaks in heavy weather. The main marked channel to enter Tauranga harbour has at 10 metres of water at chart datum, but the tidal streams can be very strong, 4.5 to 5 knots (spring tides).
Inside The Harbour
Once inside the Tauranga Harbour - Tauranga Bridge Marina is located 2.2 nautical miles due South of Mauao (Mount Maunganui) on the Eastern side of town reach, North East of the Harbour Bridge. Follow the line of green channel markers, leaving them to Starboard all the way down to yellow special mark.
Vessel Works Tauranga operates an approved Port of First Arrival (Customs Berth) for incoming / outgoing vessels.

Berthing In Tidal Marinas
Boat owners who are not experienced in manoeuvering within tidal marinas should make this clear to marina staff before arrival. An experienced staff member will meet you in the work boat "GG" and pilot you to your allocated marina berth. This service is available at no cost, between the hours of 0800 to 1800 7 days a week, or to plan their arrival for slack water which last approximately 20 minutes either side of high and low tides.

Mooring Lines
Rental berths do not include mooring lines so we would advise you to have adequate mooring lines to secure your vessel. Please note that we do not allow any hard shackles as they wear the galvanised coating off our mooring rings. If you plan to leave your vessel unattended for a long period we advise you to double up on your mooring lines.

Holy toredo!
Tauranga Bridge Marina manager Tony Arnold checking out where the Toredo worm has eaten out the inside of the piles. Photos: Daniel Hines
The multi-award winning Tauranga Bridge Marina has been undergoing a serious maintenance programme, replacing 25 piles.
The reason for the work is due to Toredo navalis, the naval shipworm, also known as the termite of the sea.
Ever since man first ventured out to sea, the boring clam has weakened unprotected wood submerged in water.
At the marina, Toredo worms have attempted to hollow out the inside of some of the marina piles. Left to themselves to have a hearty snack, they would have eventually caused serious damage.
'The piles will fall over if we don't replace them,' says marina manager Tony Arnold. 'The marina is 24 years old, and they did put a life span on the piles of 25 years. If a knot falls out of the wood, that's where the worm can get in.”

The new treated pine replacement piles also have a black plastic tube or sleeve to give them additional protection from the worm.
The Southern floating attenuator has been locked off while the 100 tonne piling barge has been at work. Those who love a spot of fishing on the curved breakwater walkway have had to be patient during Level 2 as well as wait until the maintenance is completed.
'The Southern attenuator is only two metres wide and it's not safe for people to walk under or be near the piling barge, so we've had to close the gate,” says Tony. 'We get lots of families out there and at Level 2 people can't move past each other at a safe distance. The Southern attenuator will be re-opened when we return to level 1 and my piling and repairs are over.”
Last year the marina won the NZ Marina Operators Association Best Environmental Performer award. The year before it won the Clean Marina Award in 2018. The awards don't stop there. In 2019, the Bridge Marina Travel Lift which is situated within the grounds of the Tauranga Bridge Marina site won the NZMOA Boatyard of the Year award.
