The Charlatans and Ride have announced plans for a North American co-headline tour, set to begin January 30, 2023 at New York City’s Webster Hall and then continue through a February 18 finale at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA. Tickets for all announced dates go on sale Friday, December 2 at 10 am (local).

In 1993, The Charlatans and Ride co-headlined Daytripper—two now-legendary concert events held in the British seaside towns of Brighton and Blackpool. The upcoming North American tour will once again see the two bands trading off the headline slot each night, with both performing classic albums in full–The Charlatans performing 1992’s landmark sophomore LP, Between 10th and 11th , and Ride performing 1990’s debut masterpiece, Nowhere –along with a selection of greatest hits, fan favorites, and more.

The Charlatans have been on a remarkable journey for over three decades, from their beginnings as 1990 Manchester scene hopefuls to their current role as one of the most durable and treasured bands in British music, joined by a passionate and loyal following that has given them lasting success. Somehow, the band have not just carried on during this run but adapted and transformed. The classic Charlatans sound–driving Hammond organ, Northern Soul and house-influenced rhythms, swaggering guitars, and Tim Burgess’s sunny yet somehow yearning vocals–is instantly recognizable.

‘little broken hearts’: how norah jones turned hurt into art.

Hailed by PopMatters as “a certifiable classic,” Between 10th and 11th was originally released in 1992 and features such classic singles as “Tremolo Song,” “I Don’t Want To See The Sights,” and the band’s biggest US hit to date, “Weirdo.” More recently, The Charlatans celebrated their own 30th anniversary with 2021’s career-spanning best-of, A Head Full of Ideas , and a similarly titled 2021-22 world tour.

In addition, frontman Tim Burgess has created the hugely popular Tim’s Twitter Listening Party, an ongoing series of real-time album playbacks via Twitter, featuring stories from bands and fans, rarely seen images, and exclusive insights and anecdotes from the artists who created some of music’s most iconic albums.

Both bands will be playing one of their classic albums in full – The Charlatans will perform 1992’s ‘Between 10th And 11th’ while Ride will run through 1990’s ‘Nowhere’ from start to finish. The Charlatans’ frontman Tim Burgess released his fifth solo album, ‘Typical Music’ in September. He told  NME  in a recent interview that the 22-track double album felt like his equivalent of The Beatles ‘ ‘White Album’. “I’ve always thought I had a ‘White Album’ in me!… I’ve always wanted to do [a double album]. I thought I could do one on the last one [2020’s ‘I Love The New Sky’], but just run out of time – not songs, I ran out of time. And with this one, I wanted to just give everything that I had, and that was 22 songs,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Ride  marked the 30th anniversary of ‘Nowhere’ and its 1992 follow-up ‘Going Blank Again’ with new vinyl reissues and a UK tour .

The Charlatans & Ride Reveal 2023 Dates

The Charlatans UK and Ride have announced plans for a North American co-headline tour, set to begin January 30, 2023 in New York City

The Charlatans UK and Ride have announced plans for a North American co-headline tour, set to begin January 30, 2023 at New York City’s Webster Hall and then continue through a February 18 finale at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA.

In 1993, The Charlatans UK and Ride co-headlined Daytripper. two concert events held in the British seaside towns of Brighton and Blackpool. The upcoming North American tour will once again see the two bands trading off the headline slot each night, with both performing classic albums in full – The Charlatans UK performing 1992’s LP, Between 10th and 11th , Ride performing their debut Nowhere , along with a selection of greatest hits, fan favorites, and more.

The Charlatans – from their beginnings as 1990 Manchester scene have 13 studio albums in the UK, alongside 22. The rollercoaster highs have been accompanied by some shattering lows, any which one of them could have felled a less resilient band, from nervous breakdowns to near bankruptcy and the deaths of two founder members. Somehow, the band have not just carried on but adapted and transformed. The classic Charlatans sound – driving Hammond organ, Northern Soul and house-influenced rhythms, swaggering guitars and Tim Burgess’s sunny yet somehow yearning vocal – is instantly recognizable.

Ride’s first four EPs affirmed them as an alternative sensation, with 1990’s full-length debut, Nowhere. 1992’s Going Blank Again hit the top 5 on the UK charts. Two further albums followed before Ride decided to call it a day, their standing as leftfield sonic giants undiminished. Ride reformed in 2014, with a series of festival sets (including Coachella and Primavera) and then followed by a full-scale reunion tour. 2017 saw the release of Weather Diaries, the band’s first new album in over 20 years. Ride’s sixth studio album, This Is Not A Safe Place, made a top 10 debut upon its August 2019 releases. A 2020 world tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of Nowhere was rescheduled to 2022, accompanied by the deluxe reissue of their early classic albums – including 4 EPs, Nowhere, and Going Blank Again.

The Charlatans (sometimes known as The Charlatans UK) are an English indie rock band formed in 1989, from both the West Midlands and Northwich, Chester.

The band was started by bassist Martin Blunt, who roped in fellow Midlanders, Rob Collins and Jon Brookes, as well as front man Tim Burgess, who was from Northwich. As the band recorded demos and became known on the underground scene, they were often attributed to being a part of the late 80s “Madchester” scene, mainly due to Burgess’ Mancunian roots, but in actual fact, they were recording their music in Birmingham.

However the band moved to Chester in 1990 as they released their debut single “Indian Rope”. After gaining a buzz on the indie circuit, the band were snapped up by major label Situation Two, who released their first top ten single, “The One I Only Know”. Their debut album “Some Friendly” quickly followed, debuting at number one in the UK Charts, as they established themselves as a major force in the early Britpop days.

Their second album “Between 10th and 11th” was released in 1992, and saw The Charlatans taste international success, as their single “Weirdo” charted at Number 1 in the US alternative charts. The band continued their chart topping ways in 1995, when their eponymous debuted at number one in the UK album charts.

During the writing and recording of their next album, 1997’s “Tellin’ Stories”, founding member Rob Collins was killed in a car crash, making it the last release to feature his work. It was the band's most commercially successful album, featuring three top ten singles.

Since 2000, the band have released a further handful of albums, on Universal Records, Sancturary Records and Cooking Vinyl. All of the Charlatans albums have successfully charted in the UK Top 40. The band has also played a variety of high profile gigs such as opening for the Rolling Stones and The Who.

In 2013, the band announced that drummer Jon Brookes had lost his battle with brain cancer. The band played a tribute show for Brookes, and other bands such as Beady Eye and Manic Street Preachers joined them. Money made from the night went towards The Brain Tumour Charity, who have set up a fund in Brookes' name.

Live reviews

Once upon a time, it felt like The Charlatans were going to rule the music world following a series of consistently hit-filled albums which culminated in 1997’s Telling Stories. Sadly, tragedy intervened in the band’s career, taking from them their incredibly talented keyboardist Rob Collins at far too early an age, stalling their successes. Before all that, The Charlatans burst out of Northwich in the Black Country via the indie-dancefloor classic ‘The Only One I Know’, taken from their 1990 LP Some Friendly. They probably peaked with 1995’s self-titled record, inspired by US artists loved by singer Tim Burgess as much as it was by the UK’s burgeoning dance scene. Later albums saw the band dipping their toes into country and Curtis Mayfield-esque soul with varying levels of success. The band sadly lost a second member, drummer Jon Brookes, to cancer in 2012, leaving Burgess, Mark Collins and Martin Blunt as the only original members. To see The Charlatans live is to be regaled with a set full of familiar hits providing comfort and euphoria in equal measure. Burgess’ voice has aged surprisingly well (thanks in part to a varied solo career running beside his band’s) and it’s a sheer delight to hear ‘Can’t Get Out of Bed’, ‘North Country Boy’ and ‘One to Another’ delivered with as much power as they were fifteen years ago. And of course, stick around for the encore and you’ll be exhilarated by every fan’s favourite Charlies moment – ‘Sproston Green’.

I've seen the Charlatans over 30 times. This was by far the least enjoyable. The band did nothing wrong and were in great form, as they always are.

I've seen them do 2 of these double header gigs with James and I have to say that I don't really get it. Having a show like this so close to Christmas just seems to attract what I call 'commadores', as in once, twice, three gigs a year. Pissed up idiots who are only there to sing along to Sit Down by James or North Country Boy by The Charlatans. They stand around talking or making repeat trips to the bar whilst moaning about the band not playing enough hits. In reality they're not huge fans of either band, they're just there to kill two birds with one stone.

There's no such thing as a co-headlining gig. One band will always be a support act. The Charlatans are too good to be supporting James and vice versa. Just because neither band is capable of selling out arena's on their own these days doesn't mean that sticking them on the same bill in an arena is a good idea.

Personally I'd much rather see The Charlatans and James doing their own headline show each, in a smaller venue like Manchester Apollo.

The real fans would certainly find it a far more rewarding experience.

Is there a better way than spending a warm summer evening in the company of the Charlatans?

Blossoms opened proceedings and I was intrigued to see whether Blossoms would live up to the hype and they did pretty well would love to see them headline their own show indoors somewhere.

Super Furry Animals were next on and although 6 years on from the last time I saw them it felt like they'd never been away.

Coming on to the Coronation Street theme, Tim Burgess grinning like the Cheshire Cat, the band launched into hit after hit finishing with an epic version of Sproston Green. I can't think of an other band where there is so much mutual love and goodwill between audience and band. A fantastic evening for all involved.

I didn’t realise just how much I’d missed The Charlatans until Friday night’s gig at Brudenell Social Club, Leeds. Tim Burgess is one of British music’s most underrated front-men - full of energy and banter, as he and the band filled the intimate venue with a set of greatest hits. ‘Back in the day’ The Charlatans were sometimes overshadowed by their baggy contemporaries - but this gig was a reminder of their consistent output over the years. Each and every song provoked a trip down memory lane, whilst also being a timeless classic. A very hot night for a rather cool return.

These guys still have it!... Great new album. Tim Burgess never seems to age, is the Peter Pan of the band with the coolest hair cut in town. So much time and appreciation for their fans they all took photos and signed every purchased album. I left feeling special and touched by these guys. An evening to remember.

My first time seeing the Charlies. They sounded good. Tim's hair was a bit of disaster but that is as bad as it got. The set list was the same as they did in Japan no suprises there. 9 out of 10!

The Charlatans & Ride

Between nowhere north american tour, december 5, 2022 by traci turner, english alternative rockers the charlatans and ride will hit 12 us cities next year with los angeles holding the finale date. dubbed the between nowhere north american tour, charlatans and ride will also visit three canadian cities during their jaunt..

the charlatans and ride tour 2023

The Charlatans (UK) formed in 1988 and through 13 studio albums has found success with popular hits “The Only One I Know,” “White Shirt,” “Weirdo”,” “One to Another,” “Just When You’re Thinkin’ Things Over,” “North Country Boy,” and “How High.”

Surprisingly, for a band that has been around that long, it has remained largely intact with Tim Burgess (vocals), Mark Collins (guitars), Martin Blunt (bass) and Tony Rogers (keyboards). Sadly, drummer Jon Brookes passed away in 2013.

Ride was also formed in England in 1988 and is best known as part of the shoegaze movement. From their debut album, “Vapour Trail” put them on the map, but their single “Leave Them All Behind” gave them their best success and kept them on the road. The excessive touring and band tension led to their 1996 break up. Fortunately, they reunited in 2014 to tour again and release new material: “Weather Diaries” in 2017 and “This Is Not a Safe Place” in 2019. The band has stated they plan to release another new album in 2023 or 2024.

Ride retains their original lineup of Mark Gardener (vocals, guitar), Andy Bell (vocals, guitar – no, not Erasure’s Andy Bell), Steve Queralt (bass), and Laurence Colbert (drums).

Universal Studios tram riders were seriously injured in crash, lawyer says

A passenger on a Universal Studios tram car that crashed into a guardrail on Saturday estimates the ride reached speeds up to 20 to 25 mph after the driver apparently lost control of the tram, which is much faster than the usual slow pace of the attraction, according to the man's attorney.

Fifteen passengers aboard the tram received "minor to moderate injuries" after the ride crashed shortly after 9 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said in a report. The linked tram cars had passed by a set of props from the "Jurassic Park" film franchise when the tram driver turned onto Avenue M, and for some unknown reason the last car in the procession collided with the metal guardrail on the right side, the CHP said. This caused the tram to "tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram," authorities said in the report.

Details of the accident that took place Saturday night — amid the 60th anniversary of the tram ride — remain unclear, but the CHP said the agency has determined that drugs and alcohol were not a factor.

Attorney Steven Dhillon, who represents two adults and an 11-year-old girl injured in the crash, said that one of his adult clients sustained a brain injury after her head hit a metal or plexiglass frame on the tram car.

"She woke up sick with nausea and was vomiting the next morning," Dhillon said by phone.

After she went to the hospital the following morning, she was told there was bleeding in her brain, according to Dhillon, who did not make his clients available to The Times to discuss their injuries or disclose their names.

Another Dhillon client in the last tram car said that it appeared the driver lost control while going downhill, allowing the tram to accelerate rapidly as the passengers screamed, the attorney said. The guest said the crash exacerbated pain from previous knee and spine surgeries, according to Dhillon, who did not disclose his client's age.

On Saturday, Lt. Maria Abal with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said there appeared to be an issue with the tram's brakes. While the Sheriff's Department responded to the scene of the crash, the CHP is the lead agency in the investigation, a Universal Studios spokesperson said. The CHP has not released the findings of its investigation.

"Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor," Universal Studios said in a statement.

The theme park said it was working closely with authorities as it continues its own review of the incident, adding that "safety remains a top priority."

While the initial reports of injuries appeared minimal, the long-lasting effects of the crash will likely continue to develop over the next several months, Dhillon said. He is currently discussing the situation with Universal Studios.

A spokesperson for Universal Studios did not respond to requests for comment on Dhillon's claims.

The Studio Tour tram ride will continue to operate with a modified route and the theme park will reinforce its "operational and safety protocols."

In many ways, the tram ride came to define the theme park.

Over the years, countless riders have enjoyed close encounters with a robotic shark depicting the bloodthirsty star of the movie "Jaws," a terrifying stop outside the Bates Motel from the film classic "Psycho" and a harrowing escape from the clutches of King Kong.

Newer film franchises have joined the tour, including a stroll through a suburban neighborhood wasted by aliens from the 2005 film "War of the Worlds" and a western-themed sideshow from Jordan Peele's 2022 movie "Nope."

The tram tour got its start in 1964 when Universal Studios executives noticed that food sales at the studio commissary shot up after local tour buses were allowed past the studio gates to let fans get a glimpse of the backlot movie sets and props.

The first iteration of the attraction were the pink-and-white Glamour Trams, which carried about 38,200 riders in the first year. Passengers paid $2.50 for a 2½-hour tour that included stops to see a stunt show and a movie makeup exhibition.

Later renamed the Universal Studios Studio Tour, the trams have since endured real-life fires, labor strife, a series of expansions and at least one fatal accident.

The theme park launched a renovation project in 2022 to begin converting the diesel-hydraulic powered vehicles to run on electricity to reduce emissions. It is not clear if the tram that struck the guard rail was a newer electric vehicle or an older version.

This is not the first time an accident happened at the theme park. In 1986, a park employee was run over by the tram during a special Halloween "Fright Nights” show . Paul Rebalde, 20, was stationed on a parked tram filled with mannequins dressed to look like corpses, the Sheriff's Department said at the time.

While in costume, Rebalde was to leap from among the mannequins on the parked tram and frighten people passing on moving trams. But the stunt went wrong when Rebalde jumped and became trapped between the third and fourth sections of one four-section tram, was run over and dragged to his death, according to authorities. The Halloween-themed attraction was paused for several years and later rebranded "Halloween Horror Nights."

More recently, a stunt performer was hospitalized after performing in the "Waterworld" show in January 2023 . The performer was set on fire shortly before taking a leap off a tower in the show's finale. The "Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular" show is inspired by the 1995 Kevin Costner film and opened months after the movie's debut.

Videos from Universal Studios tour go viral amid L.A. floods from Tropical Storm Hilary

The tour includes simulated flooding and earthquakes — just don't mistake it for actual news footage.

Christian Holub is a writer covering comics and other geeky pop culture. He's still mad about 'Firefly' getting canceled.

the charlatans and ride tour 2023

Los Angeles was hit this weekend with the strange combination of a hurricane (which later became Tropical Storm Hilary) and an earthquake at the same time, but the city is used to such natural disasters — at least as a theme park attraction. Over the weekend, social media users made the most of that parallel.

On Sunday, several Twitter/X users went viral by posting clips from Universal Studios Hollywood's tram tour — which includes simulations of an earthquake and flooding — jokingly acting like it was real footage of Tropical Storm Hilary.

"The LA Metro Station on Wilshire/Vermont is flooding from the storm," posted user @DealinRugs alongside a video of a flooded train station. However, a Community Note affixed to the post by Twitter/X killed the joke by clarifying the footage was actually from the Universal ride just in case anyone was fooled.

If that community note wasn't clear enough, the official account for the L.A. Metro also humorously explained the difference.

"This is a ride at Universal Studios. Duh," the account posted .

Locals quickly jumped in to post replies that referenced other features of the tram tour, which winds through the studio's famed backlot and features real movie sets and props (the train station was used in a scene from Beverly Hills Cop 3 ).

One person posted a shot of the part of the ride that features a flash flood roaring through a Mexican village (an area that was used to shoot Big Fat Liar and Fletch Lives ), writing "Wow, look at the flooding in Mexico, this is crazy."

Another included video from an old Jim Henson Hour special titled " Miss Piggy's Hollywood " with a clip of the beloved Muppet riding the tram as it encounters Bruce the shark from Jaws . "You should not be fishing in Los Angeles County today. We just got this footage," the user jokingly warned .

Below, you can see an actual image of flooding induced by Hilary. The differences should be clear.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
