Review: The Tour Guy: Vatican Night Tour with the Sistine Chapel

A view of St Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy with the Ponte Sant Angelo and Tiber River in the foreground

Reviewed by Maresa Manara

Zoom out. What’s the big picture here?

There’s no denying it—The Tour Guy’s tours are slick. They somehow manage to keep things professional while also feeling relatively impromptu, rather than big and organized. The tour meets at the stairs in front of Caffe Vaticano on Viale Vaticano, located directly across the street from the Vatican Museum's entrance. With a maximum group size of 14, it feels a bit like you’re out with a bunch of your new best friends. This tour is popular, so booking is a must.

Tell us about your fellow tourees.

On our visit the demographic skewed young, but it really depends on the day. The group was attentive and keen to learn.

How are the guides?

Despite the name, the guides aren’t just ‘guys’–they’re all genders. What we loved about our guide was her ability to structure the tour towards the individuals on the day, rather than just regurgitating a memorized spiel.

Anything you’ll be remembering weeks or months or years from now?

She was able to answer everyone’s questions (about the tour and about life in Rome in general), and even gave us an extra hour of her time. By the end of it, we felt like old friends.

So: money, time—how can we make the most of both?

Being able to skip the long lines, and being inside the Vatican Museums after dark felt delightfully exclusive. We saw the highlights of the museums (the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms, The Gallery of Maps and the Gallery of Tapestries). There were plenty of stories and fun facts about each work of art, and we were able to enjoy the experience rather than feeling rushed or crowded.

Yes, it was a long day with lots of walking, but that is what we paid for. Our guide was so pleasant and knowledgeable (I think her name as me was Katherine). Got a lot of great pictures and lots of information. You could tell she was passionate about what she did. There were lots of crowds and time limits for how little time we could be at each sight. But, they tell you about time limits in advance and nothing they can do about the crowds. If you want to see the high points of Rome in a day in a small group, thus is your tour. • croseh 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Save time & money and DIY This was a complete waste of our precious time in Rome and our money. We stood in a plaza near the monastery and waited. Then we stood in a side street and waited. Then we stood in a line and waited. (Do you sense a theme?) The woman who was our “guide” was lovely but she basically just talked to us to fill time. We finally entered the Capuchin monastery and were given an automated audio guided tour that we could have purchased on our own from the Monastery. We were only given 30 minutes in the Monastery. Not enough time even for the highlights. Most of our time was spent waiting for them to allow us in, because our “small group” was NOT small and the monastery could not accommodate us quickly. After 30 minutes inside we met up outside and waited again because some of the people in our “small” group didn’t show up on time to move to the next location (can you believe they wanted more time in the monastery?) Next we were loaded onto a bus and driven to the catacombs outside the city (we could have taken an Uber or taxi with less hassle). Then we waited again because once again we were not expected and did not have a set time but instead were bundled into a large tour AGAIN given NOT by our tour guide but by a staff member of the catacombs. We could have stood in line ourselves and bought these tour tickets faster. After the tour we stood outside and waited again because our “small” group was split into two tours and the other group was twenty minutes behind ours. We were then driven back to town. Save your money - it would be cheaper and faster to get in line yourself at the monastery, buy tickets that include the guided audio tour, then Uber to the catacombs and buy tickets for the guided tour and do everything at your own pace. • 490grants 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic Guide and Tour Our guide for the tour was Titti, who was incredibly knowledgeable and delivered the information in an engaging manner. One of the highlights were her books and in particular those showing the ruins in the Roman Forum as we were looking at them, and then overlaying it with a page showing what it looked like in Roman times. Absolutely recommend this experience and our guide. Read more Written March 30, 2024
  • Ronnie B 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Not to be missed. This trip was with the tour guy, who are the same company. Our guide for the day was Rafa, who was friendly, informative and very passionate about Ancient Rome. She was also very assertive when dealing with two freeloaders who tried to attach themselves to our group lol. The Colosseum was amazing but is vey busy. The tour of Palatine hill took us through the newly opened area and the Roman forum. The guide explained we wouldn’t see everything due to time but advised us to stay on afterwards and see the places we hadn’t seen. We did this spending a lot more time in the Forum and the whole of Palatine hill. This place is fantastic and not to be missed, the trip is not cheap but I would recommend you visit with a guide. • Samuel625 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great tour Had an incredible tour and day with our guide, Paola Pagano. She was enthusiastic, knowledgeable about the sites we visited and made the Rome experience enjoyable. The tour did take the whole 7 hours and we manged to see and do all stops, without feeling rushed. We had time to take photographs, ask all the questions we had and get some additional nuggets of information about the history of Rome that you would not find if you just visited the sites without a guide. Contrary to the reviews I had read before, the group I was with only had 15 other people and at the start of the tour, the company had several guides with other groups of tourists. It appeared that they were within the 18 max they advertise. All in all, the I enjoyed the experience and the tour and I would recommend it. Read more Written March 28, 2024

The 5 best vatican tours of 2024.

Guided Vatican tours can make the experience less overwhelming and more enjoyable.

The Best Vatican Tours

Best Vatican City Tours

Key Takeaways

  • Guided tours can help you make the most of your visit to Vatican City.
  • Ticket prices can vary considerably depending on the tour group size.
  • Anticipate crowds regardless of when or how you visit, as many tours offer early entry, after-hours and/or skip-the-line access.

One of the most famous landmarks in the world, Vatican City draws more than 5 million people each year, which means that no matter when you visit, you can expect massive crowds. Along with the crowds, the sheer size of this sovereign city-state in Rome can make a visit to Vatican City feel overwhelming.

If you're feeling intimidated by the experience, consider one of the following small-group Vatican tours, guided by local experts who can both explain the history of the Eternal City and help you navigate the crowds.

What a Life Tours – Skip-the-line Vatican Small Group Tour

Price: Adults from $87; kids from $82 Duration: 3 hours

One of the best tours in Rome , this small-group option includes skip-the-line tickets to all the museums as well as St. Peter's Basilica . Tourgoers are also given headsets so they can better hear their guide. Recent visitors praise the knowledgeable tour guides for helping them maneuver the museums, as well as ensuring guests are comfortable (finding a shady reprieve on a hot summer day, for example).

Tours depart from the What a Life Tours office ( Via Santamaura 14B ) at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. Tickets for children ages 5 and younger are free.

What a Life Tours also offers skip-the-line access that omits the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica, as well as local food tours and tours of the Colosseum .

Tours, which are available during a wide variety of time slots each day, start and conclude at Caffé Vaticano , right across the street from the entrance to the museums.

Other experiences offered by Liv Tours include a Jewish Ghetto & Travestere Tour, cooking classes and tours designed for kids.

Private Tours of Rome – Vatican and Sistine Chapel Private Tour
