Entering US from Canada by Car: Requirements & COVID-19

According to the United States Department of Transportation, in 2019 alone, an average of approximately 45,000 passenger vehicles crossed the US-Canada border daily through the various land ports of entry. It's worth noting that this number may have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions.

That said, it’s safe to say that number is much higher today with the easing of COVID-19 travel restrictions. Hence, entering the US from Canada by car is certainly a busy affair.

Below, we answer popular questions including what you need to cross the US border from Canada by car, COVID-19 requirements as of February 2023 (and whether you still need COVID-19 test results), a list of the busiest land border crossings to keep in mind, and share the least busy time of day and week to cross into the US from Canada by car.

What do you need to cross the US border from Canada by car?

It's always a good idea to check the current travel requirements and restrictions before your trip, as these can change at any time. You can find more information on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website or by contacting the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. At time of writing to cross the US border from Canada by car, you will need several things:

Valid travel documents: You will need a valid passport, passport card, or other approved travel documents to enter the United States. Make sure to check the expiration date of your travel documents before you leave for your trip.

A visa or ESTA: If you are not a citizen of a country that is part of the Visa Waiver Program, you will need to obtain a visa before entering the United States. If you are a citizen of a country that is part of the Visa Waiver Program, you will need to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before your trip.

Proof of vehicle ownership: If you are driving your own vehicle, you will need to provide proof of ownership, such as a vehicle registration, insurance card, or rental agreement.

Proof of financial support: You may be asked to provide proof of financial support, such as a bank statement or a credit card, to show that you can support yourself during your stay in the United States.

Your itinerary: You may be asked to provide a detailed itinerary of your trip, including your planned destinations and the length of your stay.

Any necessary permits: Depending on your trip's purpose and activities, you may need to obtain additional permits, such as a hunting or fishing license.

Here are the latest entry and exit requirements , including useful links and resources, from the Government of Canada’s official website.

What are the COVID-19 requirements to cross the border into the United States?

The COVID-19 requirements to cross the border into the United States are subject to change and may depend on factors such as your country of origin and the mode of transportation you are using to enter the country.

For the latest information, visit the Frequently Asked Questions: Guidance for Travelers to Enter the U.S. page , posted on the US’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website.

As of February 2023, the following are the requirements for travelers entering the United States by land:

Vaccination

All foreign nationals entering the United States by land are required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19. The accepted vaccines are those authorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) or the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). You will need to show proof of vaccination to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at the border crossing.

COVID-19 test

All foreign nationals entering the United States by land are required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of crossing the border. The test must be a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) or a viral antigen test. You will need to show proof of the negative test result to the CBP officer at the border crossing.

Read this before you travel to the United States , from CDC’s website.

It is important to note that these requirements may change at any time, and it is recommended to check the latest guidance and requirements from the US government before traveling.

Additionally, some US states may have additional COVID-19-related restrictions, so it's a good idea to check the state's health department website for the latest information.

We strongly suggest you visit the COVID-19 and International Travel page here , from the Government of Canada’s official website.

As of October 1, 2022 for all travelers entering Canada from the US, proof of COVID-19 vaccination is not required ( except for travelers arriving from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, and Macao ).

What are the busiest US-Canada car border crossings?

Here are the busiest US-Canada car border crossings. These border crossings are all located in the eastern part of the United States and are heavily traveled due to their proximity to major cities and transportation routes.

On the Canadian side, these crossings are all in Ontario, so for our US friends visiting Canada’s busiest province for a road trip getaway, here are 5 regions you need to visit .

It's worth noting that the level of traffic at these crossings can vary depending on the time of day and day of the week, and it's always a good idea to check border wait times before traveling to avoid delays.

  • Ambassador Bridge: The Ambassador Bridge connects Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario, and is the busiest US-Canada border crossing for passenger vehicles.
  • Blue Water Bridge: The Blue Water Bridge connects Port Huron, Michigan, with Sarnia, Ontario, and is the second-busiest US-Canada border crossing for passenger vehicles.
  • Peace Bridge: The Peace Bridge connects Buffalo, New York, with Fort Erie, Ontario, and is the third-busiest US-Canada border crossing for passenger vehicles.
  • Rainbow Bridge: The Rainbow Bridge connects Niagara Falls, New York, with Niagara Falls, Ontario, and is the fourth-busiest US-Canada border crossing for passenger vehicles.
  • Lewiston-Queenston Bridge: The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge connects Lewiston, New York, with Queenston, Ontario, and is the fifth-busiest US-Canada border crossing for passenger vehicles.

Is there a least busy time of day and week to cross into the US from Canada by car?

Early morning weekdays are best.

The least busy time of day and week to cross into the US from Canada by car can vary depending on the border crossing and other factors. However, as a general rule, weekdays are usually less busy than weekends, and early morning (before 8 a.m.) and late evening (after 8 p.m.) are typically the least busy times of day to cross the border.

Consider commercial traffic volume and busy summer months

Additionally, there are some specific factors that can impact the traffic at each border crossing, such as the volume of commercial traffic and the time of year. For example, border crossings in the summer months may be more congested due to increased tourism and vacation travel.

Check border crossing real-time wait times online

It's always a good idea to check the border wait times before you travel to plan your trip accordingly. Many border crossing agencies provide real-time wait times on their websites or through mobile apps. You can also check social media feeds or local news sources for information on border wait times and traffic conditions.

Well, now that we got all this technical information out of the way, it’s time to enjoy your journey by car. And if you’re driving with a passenger, here are 7 road trip car tips when travelling with a partner .

Fact Sheet: Guidance for Travelers to Enter the U.S. at Land Ports of Entry and Ferry Terminals

Updated Date: May 1, 2023

DHS Statement on the Lifting of Title 19 Requirements

Beginning May 12, 2023, DHS will no longer require non-U.S. travelers entering the United States via land ports of entry and ferry terminals to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide related proof of vaccination upon request. DHS intends to rescind these Title 19 travel restrictions in alignment with the end of the Public Health Emergency and the termination of the Presidential Proclamation on air travel .

Updated Date: April 21, 2022

As of Thursday, April 21, 2022, DHS will extend COVID-19-related land border entry requirements. Non-U.S. travelers seeking to enter the United States via land ports of entry and ferry terminals at the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination upon request.

These restrictions apply to non-U.S. travelers who are traveling for essential or non-essential reasons. They do not apply to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, or U.S. nationals.

This announcement does not affect requirements for entry into the United States by air.

What To Expect

As travel returns to pre-pandemic levels, wait times are expected to increase. The resources below are intended to prepare travelers to improve the cross-border travel experience. Travelers should plan for longer than normal wait times and longer lines at U.S. land border crossings when planning their trip and are reminded to exercise patience.

To help reduce wait times and long lines, travelers arriving or departing from air, sea or land ports of entry are encouraged to opt in to using Simplified Arrival or Mobile Passport Control , which can make the inspection process touchless and more expedient with the use of facial comparison technology . Documented non-citizens may also apply for and manage their I-94s through the CBP One TM mobile application, which serves as a single portal for individuals to access CBP mobile applications and services.

Arrival at Land Port of Entry or Ferry Terminal

Since January 22, 2022, DHS has allowed inbound non-U.S. travelers (non-U.S. citizens who are neither U.S. nationals nor lawful permanent residents) to seek to enter the United States via a land port of entry (POE) or ferry terminal if they are fully vaccinated and have appropriate documentation.

Non-U.S. individuals traveling to the United States via land ports of entry or ferry terminals, whether for essential or non-essential reasons, must:

  • verbally attest to their COVID-19 vaccination status;
  • provide, upon request, proof of a CDC-approved COVID-19 vaccination, as outlined on the CDC website ;
  • present a valid  Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative  (WHTI)-compliant document, such as a valid passport, Trusted Traveler Program Card, or Enhanced Tribal Card;
  • be prepared to present any other relevant documents requested by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer during a border inspection; and

COVID-19 testing is not required for entry via a land or ferry port of entry.

In March 2020, to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, the U.S. government issued restrictions on travel into the United States. DHS implemented temporary restrictions, limiting entry at the U.S. northern and southern land borders to persons engaged in essential travel, including lawful trade, emergency response, and public health purposes. The White House also suspended entry to foreign nationals who had recently been in certain countries.

In October 2021, the White House  announced  that, starting November 8, 2021, the U.S. government would move away from the country-by-country restrictions previously applied during the COVID-19 pandemic and adopt travel policies that rely primarily on vaccination to advance the safe resumption of travel. Since January 22, 2022, DHS has imposed a vaccination requirement on non-U.S. individuals seeking to cross into the United States at land ports of entry or ferry terminals.

To help you avoid delays and get you on your way, we’ve put together an essential travel checklist of things to be mindful of when planning your cross-border trip from Canada.

1. Get your docs in a row

One of the very first things you should do while planning your trip across the land border is to make sure you have all the valid travel documents you need to bring with you, starting with a valid passport. Check the expiration date to avoid the unfortunate situation of getting turned away by customs and border protection (it can happen to the best of us!).

While most countries require passports to be valid for at least another 6 months in order to enter, Canadian passports can in fact be valid up until the date of departure for the US. However, it's always best to have some wiggle room just in case plans change.

As for visas, Canadian citizens are not required to have a visa or ESTA to enter the US, but foreign nationals from certain countries that aren’t part of the Visa Waiver Program do. So, if you’re travelling with any foreign visitors without Canadian citizenship, be sure to check their specific requirements ahead of time to avoid any setbacks at the land border. A trusted traveler program card like NEXUS is another great way to pass through faster.

Canadian permanent residents may also require a visa to enter the US depending on what country they are from, so be sure not to overlook that detail!

Don't forget that the government requires families travelling with kids under the age of 18 to have a letter of consent when not travelling with both parents.

If you’re driving to the US in your own car, you’ll also need to provide proof of vehicle ownership if asked by CBP officers. Always have your vehicle registration and insurance papers handy, or your rental agreement if you’re using a hired car.

Be ready to answer any questions customs and border protection agents may have and be prepared to show documentation about your trip itinerary too. If your stay is more than a day, they might want to see where you’re staying at your planned destination, and that you have enough funds to cover your trip.

Last, but certainly not least, it’s good to be aware and prepared with any necessary permits for the activities you’ll be doing during your trip. Going fishing? You may need to obtain a license ahead of time.

As it stands right now, you don’t need to show border protection agents any proof of vaccination for COVID-19 or a negative test, but as we’ve learned from experience in recent years, these requirements are subject to change. For peace of mind, take a minute to check the latest disease control information before you go.

The US Customs & Border Patrol website is a great resource for the latest information on entry requirements, all necessary documents for international travellers and permanent residents, and any temporary restrictions. You can also check with consular services if ever you still have questions.

2. Ensure you’re well insured

Before you start packing up the car, it’s also important to review your insurance policy to make sure you have the protection you need during your visit. While it is likely that your car insurance policy will insure your Canadian car in the US for a period of up to 6 months, some providers may have restrictions. *

Car insurance regulations differ province to province, so the coverage you’re eligible for can vary based on where you live. Ask your provider how long your coverage is good for in the US, whether it remains intact when you cross the border, or whether you need any additional coverage for your policy to remain valid. Nobody wants to end up being responsible for unforeseen repair bills because they didn’t have sufficient car insurance coverage. *

Remember that it’s always better to be safe than sorry! You don’t need to notify your insurance provider if you’re heading south of the border, but a quick call or a visit to intact.ca to verify your coverage can give you valuable peace of mind. *

For longer trips, it's advisable to look into travel insurance as well. Should anyone need emergency medical treatment while you're away, it can be very costly in the US. Check what kind of policy you may already have and whether you need any additional coverage.

Get a car insurance quote and the right protection for your needs.

3. plan the best time to go.

While a long holiday weekend may be the perfect time to get away for a few days, it can also come with longer wait times at the land borders. In fact, weekends in general are simply a more popular time to go. If your plans are flexible, aim to leave on a weekday (especially in the morning!) for better chances of breezing through border crossings.

Did you know that you can actually check live wait times at Canada-US land borders? It’s not a bad idea to check those ahead of time to avoid any hold-ups. As for the land border itself, some are typically busier than others. Sometimes it’s good to see if there’s a smaller, less popular crossing nearby to help you reduce wait times.

In the event that you do end up having a bit of a wait, a great playlist, delicious snacks, and some car games like 21 questions will always help pass the time!

4. Be aware of what to declare

Before heading back to Canada, be sure to have your receipts readily available to show customs and border protection agents, in case you need to declare any purchases you made while away. Canadian residents can bring back tax and duty-free goods valued at $200 after being away for 24 hours, and $800 after 48 hours.

In the US for a same-day cross-border shopping trip? There are no personal exemptions for this so be prepared to pay any taxes or duties for those purchases. The CBSA offers a handy calculator so that you can estimate these numbers ahead of time and avoid any costly surprises.

And of course, it's essential to respect the customs and border protection rules. Make sure you’re not bringing back anything that’s prohibited in Canada, and be ready to declare items like alcohol, food and any other restricted products. Not doing so can end up in border inspection which can really add time to your journey.

Good to know

Planning a picnic across the border and want to bring some good cheese, charcuterie and alcohol from your province? Make sure you check if these foods are authorized by U.S. authorities. Most cheeses are, except soft cheeses such as cottage cheese or ricotta, meat-based cheeses and some unpasteurized cheeses. Deli meats such as sausages are unfortunately prohibited as well as mutton, lamb or goat meat. As for alcohol, you must be 21 years old to consume it in the United States, and the limit is 1 litre. Above this amount you will have to pay import taxes, or the item will be confiscated. Please note that all food must be declared to U.S. customs , and it is important not to drink and drive. If you do drink, make sure you have a designated driver or can walk back to your hotel or accommodation.

Be on your way

If you want to be extra diligent, the Canada Border Services Agency has a border reminder checklist on their website that you can consult before heading to the border crossing and back into Canada. Once you've checked everything off your list, drive safe and happy travels!

Canada-U.S. border rules and restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic explained

The rules are complicated and sometimes change. here's what you need to know now.

Confused over Canada-U.S. border restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Perhaps you're wondering why you see U.S. licence plates in a local parking lot when the Canada-U.S. land border is closed to tourists.

Or you're stumped why your neighbour was able to fly to New York last week, but you can't make the five-minute drive across the Windsor-Detroit border to visit family.

Here's what you need to know about current Canada-U.S. border restrictions and how they may impact you.

Canada-U.S. land border rules

To help stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, Canada and the U.S. agreed to close their shared land border to non-essential traffic starting on March 21. The agreement is reviewed every 30 days. So far, the border closure has been extended three times.

The current end date is July 21 , and that date could be extended once again, particularly if the number of COVID-19 cases in some U.S.  states  continues to spike.

"I honestly don't think the border will open until the end of the year," said U.S. immigration lawyer Len Saunders. "Especially when you hear about more [COVID-19] cases in Arizona and Texas and all these southern states."

  • B.C. closing Peace Arch park at Canada-U.S. border due to 'significant' number of visitors

The Canada-U.S. land border remains open to people making trips for essential reasons, such as for work or school.

On June 9, the Canadian government loosened its border restrictions to allow American visitors with immediate family in Canada to enter the country. Note that a boyfriend or girlfriend doesn't qualify as family and a common-law partner only qualifies if that person has lived with their significant other for at least a year.

Visiting family members must stay in Canada for at least 15 days and self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

travel to usa from canada covid by car

The land border closure continues to frustrate many cross-border couples who can't meet Canada's requirements for reuniting with family.

Last year, Ian Geddes of Blaine, Wash., married Birgit Heinbach  of Surrey, B.C. Until Heinbach gets her U.S. immigrant visa, the two are separated by the border.

Geddes said he can't get enough time off work right now to complete a 14-day quarantine in Canada — before he can hang out with his wife and her son.

  • Engaged Canadian-American couples kept apart despite new exemption for cross-border families

"It's just a really tough situation," said Geddes, who wishes the Canadian government would waive the self-quarantine requirement for immediate family.

"You should be allowed to cross into a country and see your wife," he said. "Give us some kind of a concession."

You can fly to the U.S.

Some Canadians may be surprised to learn they can still fly to the U.S. during the pandemic, even though the same rule doesn't apply on the other side of the border.

With the exception of immediate family, Canada currently restricts all foreigners — including Americans — from visiting the country for non-essential travel via any mode of transportation.

The U.S., however, only prohibits visitors from entering its country if they've been in Brazil, China, Iran, Ireland, the U.K. or 26 European countries in the Schengen Area 14 days prior.

travel to usa from canada covid by car

Because of the bilateral agreement to close the Canada-U.S. land border, the only way Canadians can currently travel to the U.S. is by air . Saunders said dozens of his Canadian clients have flown to the U.S. with no complications during the land border closure.

"There's a back door wide open," said Saunders, whose office sits close to the Canadian border in Blaine, Wash. "They can just go in through the airport, and so that's what people are doing in droves."

  • Canadians can still travel to the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic — just not by car

Canadian air passengers also likely won't have to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival in the U.S. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that international travellers do so, but it's not a requirement unless specified by a particular region or state.

When Canadians return home, they must self-isolate for 14 days —  as per federal rules .

U.S.- Canada border restrictions loosened, allowing some families to reunite

Heinbach plans to fly to the U.S. in August to visit Geddes in Blaine. It's a frustrating solution for the couple because, even though they live in different countries, their homes are only eight kilometres apart — typically a 10-minute drive, depending on border traffic.

But now Heinbach must fly from Vancouver to Seattle to visit Geddes in Blaine — a journey of more than three hours by plane and car.

"It just doesn't make sense," said Geddes.

U.S. licence plates in Canada

Some Banff, Alta., residents have complained that they've recently spotted American tourists and U.S. licence plates in the resort town.

"Two days ago, I saw four people get out of a car, out of a Texas vehicle," Banff resident Nina Stewart told CBC News on June 12. "They were laughing and joking about how easy it was to get into Banff."

Canada allows Americans to drive through the country to Alaska for essential reasons, such as for work or returning to their home. However, they're not to make unnecessary stops along the way.

RCMP said officers fined seven Americans this week who were supposed to be driving straight to Alaska, but instead were caught taking in the sights at Banff National Park. The fines, issued under the Alberta Health Act, were for $1,200 each.

"As much as you'd want to stop and see the sights ... that's just inappropriate," said Fraser Logan, spokesperson for the RCMP in Alberta.

U.S. to end vaccine requirements for Canadians at land border, international air travellers: officials

The U.S. is ending its COVID-19 vaccine requirements for international air travellers and Canadians at the border as of next week, officials announced on Monday.

By the end of the day on May 11, international air travellers, federal employees and federal contractors will no longer need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination , the White House said in a statement Monday.

“Our COVID-19 vaccine requirements bolstered vaccination across the nation, and our broader vaccination campaign has saved millions of lives,” the statement reads. “While vaccination remains one of the most important tools in advancing the health and safety of employees and promoting the efficiency of workplaces, we are now in a different phase of our response when these measures are no longer necessary.”

The statement added that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will also “start the process to end their vaccination requirements for ... certain noncitizens at the land border."

“In the coming days, further details related to ending these requirements will be provided,” the White House said.

According to Democratic Congressman Brian Higgins, whose district encompasses Buffalo and Niagara Falls, N.Y. along the Canadian border, the COVID-19 vaccine requirement will also be lifted for Canadians seeking to cross into the U.S. through the land border as of May 11.

Higgins said this has been confirmed to him by the White House after he pushed for clarity on whether or not Canadian crossings at the land border would be impacted by the U.S. lifting its COVID emergency order on May 11.

“For over three years now there have been barriers to cross-border travel,” Higgins said in a press release. “It has kept families apart and impeded economic recovery. While long overdue, this last lifting of pandemic restrictions is certainly welcome news and critically important as we seek opportunities to encourage a robust cross-border exchange that delivers shared prosperity.”

Last month, U.S President Joe Biden signed a bill to end the COVID-19 national emergency.

Canada ended its requirement for proof of COVID-19 vaccination for all travellers entering the country by air or through the land border last October.

Who can travel from the U.S. to Canada?

How many border crossings are there between the u.s. and canada, checklist for a u.s.-canada border crossing, special cases for alaska residents, if you want to cross the u.s.-canada border ….

Borders between the U.S. and Canada recently reopened to travelers more than a year after having closed due to COVID-19. Now, many who are eager to explore our neighbor to the north are left wondering what’s involved in a border crossing and what guidelines they’ll need to adhere to for a successful journey.

If you’re anxious to visit Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary, here’s what to know to plan your U.S.-Canada border crossing, whether by land, air or sea.

Currently, Canadian borders are open to all U.S. citizens wishing to enter regardless of vaccination status. However, the requirements for entry will vary based on your vaccination status.

Fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide a negative COVID test for entry, but must still use the ArriveCAN app to submit mandatory entry information, including proof of vaccination, at least 72 hours prior to arrival and/or before boarding a cruise ship destined for Canada.

Not fully vaccinated? You won’t be able to visit Canada if you’re traveling for discretionary or leisure purposes. If you don't qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler but still need to travel to Canada for reasons other than leisure, you’ll be required to quarantine for 14 days, take a molecular COVID test, and register for a COVID test upon your arrival in the country, which you can do in advance to save time.

» Learn more: What COVID test is required for travel?

There are more than 100 land border crossings between the U.S. and Canada, and wait time to cross can vary widely.

At most crossings, how long you wait depends on the time of day and the day of the week. Some crossings have little to no delay at off-peak travel times, and others, like Buffalo, New York, can log wait times around 40 minutes.

If you want to set appropriate expectations for how long it takes to cross the U.S.-Canada border, check the Government of Canada website , which is updated hourly.

» Learn more: Need a passport for a trip? Give yourself a big time cushion

If you're fully vaccinated and traveling to Canada, whether by car, plane or boat, you still have to follow certain protocols. To meet entry requirements, you must:

Have no symptoms of COVID-19.

Have received all doses of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 full days before you enter Canada.

Upload your proof of vaccination in ArriveCAN , an app that provides border crossing info and stores important documentation.

Have your required entry documents.

NOTE: As of April 1, 2022, fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide a negative test for entry.

If you don’t meet all the requirements of a fully vaccinated traveler, you’ll have to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. You may also be selected for a random arrival test at some airports and land crossings. These may take place at the airport or a designated testing site, or you may be provided with a do-it-yourself kit that you can send in once you arrive at your final destination.

If you live in Alaska, you may sometimes have to drive through Canada to get to certain regions of the state. Unvaccinated Alaska residents who must pass through Canada for necessary purposes (i.e. not for leisure or recreation) may do so without pre-entry and arrival COVID tests, but they must remain in their vehicle while driving through Canada. They'll also likely be given a specimen collection kit when they cross a land border into Canada.

If you're leaving Alaska to travel to the lower forty-eight, or if you're returning to Alaska after being in another state, you may also be granted special permission to pass through Canada. However, if you’re not fully vaccinated you will need a negative COVID molecular test result to enter. You'll also need proof that you live in Alaska if you’re driving north, or proof of residence or employment in the lower forty-eight if driving south.

The key to a successful U.S.-Canadian border crossing is preparation. Make sure you know what documentation and information you need well in advance of your arrival at the border or the airport. Ensure everything is in order and uploaded to the ArriveCAN app, and be patient. Above all, travel safely.

Morning Bid: CPI Vigil, Canada Decides, China Credit Warning

Reuters

A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Mike Dolan

Wall St stocks have held up remarkably well in the face of the renewed interest rate angst of the past week but Wednesday's March inflation readout may now be make or break from here.

A late bounce for the S&P500 on Tuesday saw the index close in positive territory and stock futures tick higher ahead of the consumer price report later today.

For all the worries about the stubborn 'last mile' of the disinflation process, consensus forecasts would suggest the market calm is warranted for now. The core annual CPI rate is expected to have ticked a tenth of a percentage point lower to 3.7% last month even if headline rates likely picked up steam.

The restive Treasury market has also steadied into the critical release, despite a poor 3-year auction on Tuesday and with $39 billion of 10-year notes going under the hammer later.

Crude oil's 3% retreat this week from Friday's 2024 high has helped somewhat.

The dollar too has frozen awaiting the inflation readout, with the Bank of Canada deciding on interest rates later today and the European Central Bank meeting on Thursday too.

Canadian rates are expected to be kept on hold at 5.0% for now, although money markets still price an 80% chance of a cut in June - as they do for the ECB.

With Federal Reserve policy rate futures still wavering about a U.S. cut that month, markets seem comfortable that the ECB, Bank of Canada and even Bank of England will now jump the Fed gun in starting the rate cut cycle.

New Zealand's central bank held its rate steady on Wednesday as expected but it cautioned that it may need to remain restrictive for a sustained period to drive inflation down to its 1-3% target range and markets don't expect any easing there until August.

What's more, some Fed hawks continue to suggest rates may not be cut at all this year.

Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said on Tuesday that it's possible rates stay on hold through 2024 if progress on inflation stalls and the economy continues to outperform.

"I can't take off the possibility that rate cuts may even have to move further out," Bostic said in an interview with Yahoo Finance.

Fed minutes of its March policy meeting are also released later on Wednesday.

Inflation concerns apart, there were some signs of stress in the U.S. corporate picture on Tuesday as the NFIB's small business survey showed confidence ebbing to an 11-year low - albeit with inflation still registering as the major concern.

Overseas markets were firmer going into the big U.S. release - perhaps partly emboldened by hopes of earlier credit easing in Europe and elsewhere.

Tech stocks were a winner in Europe and Hong Kong early on Wednesday after giant Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC reported a forecast-beating 16.5% rise in first-quarter revenue - the high end of the firm's own guidance as its sales boomed on demand for artificial intelligence applications.

Japan's Nikkei and China's mainland indexes were underperformers, however.

Japanese government bond yields hit a four-week high after Bloomberg reported the Bank of Japan will likely consider raising its inflation forecast at a policy meeting later this month.

But, still wary of BOJ intervention, the dollar/yen exchange rate hovered just under the 152 yen level.

BOJ boss Kazuo Ueda said the central bank would not directly respond to currency moves in setting monetary policy, brushing aside market speculation that the yen's sharp falls could force it to raise interest rates.

"We absolutely won't change monetary policy directly in response to exchange-rate moves," Ueda told parliament.

China's markets were also under a cloud on Wednesday after Fitch cut its outlook on China's sovereign credit rating to negative, citing risks to public finances as the economy faces increasing uncertainty in its shift to new growth models.

The outlook downgrade follows a similar move by Moody's in December and comes as Beijing ratchets up efforts to spur a feeble post-COVID recovery in the world's second-largest economy with fiscal and monetary support.

Chinese government bonds held steady, however.

Key diary items that may provide direction to U.S. markets later on Wednesday:

* US March consumer price index

* Bank of Canada policy decision, news conference

* World Trade Organization publishes its Global Trade Outlook

* Federal Open Market Committee publishes minutes of March policy meeting

* Federal Reserve Board Governor Michelle Bowman, Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee and Richmond Fed chief Thomas Barkin all speak

* US Treasury sells $39 billion of 10-year notes

* US President Joe Biden welcomes Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for state visit

Latest border and travel measures

This news release may not reflect the current border and travel measures. Check COVID-19: Travel, testing and borders for the latest requirements to enter Canada.

Easing border measures for fully vaccinated travellers entering Canada - Permitting discretionary travel for citizens and permanent residents of the United States

From: Public Health Agency of Canada

Backgrounder

Backgrounder: Easing border measures for fully vaccinated travellers entering Canada - Permitting discretionary travel for citizens and permanent residents of the United States

On September 7, 2021, provided that Canada’s COVID-19 epidemiology remains favourable, the Government intends to open Canada’s borders for discretionary travel by travellers from any country who have been fully vaccinated with Government of Canada-accepted vaccines at least 14 days prior to entering Canada and who meet specific entry requirements.

With the advent of increased vaccination rates in Canada, declining COVID-19 cases and reduced pressure on health care capacity, the government intends to bring a number of changes into effect, provided that Canada's COVID-19 epidemiology remains favourable. On August 9, 2021, at 12:01 a.m. EDT, fully vaccinated citizens and permanent residents of the United States (U.S.), currently residing in the U.S., will be permitted to enter Canada for discretionary (non-essential) travel. Entry to Canada will continue to be prohibited for U.S. travellers who are not fully vaccinated and for all other foreign nationals, unless they already meet an exemption set out in the Orders made under the Quarantine Act .

To be eligible to enter Canada, fully vaccinated American citizens and permanent residents must have received the full series of a vaccine - or combination of vaccines - accepted by the Government of Canada at least 14 days prior to entering Canada. Currently, those vaccines are manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). Travellers can receive their vaccine in any country, and must provide evidence supporting their vaccination in English, French or with a certified translation (along with the original).

In addition, fully vaccinated travellers must also:

  • provide COVID-19-related information electronically through ArriveCAN (app or web portal) including proof of vaccination prior to departing for Canada (subject to limited exceptions);
  • meet the pre-entry testing requirements;
  • be asymptomatic upon arrival; and
  • have a paper or digital copy of their vaccination documentation in English or French (or certified translation, along with the original) ready to show a government official on request.

All travellers must still present a suitable quarantine plan, and be prepared to quarantine, should they not meet all of the conditions required to be exempt from quarantine. They will also be required to follow public health measures in place, such as monitoring for signs and symptoms of COVID-19, wearing a mask when in public and keeping a copy of their vaccination documentation and test results - as well as a list of close contacts and locations visited - for 14 days after entry to Canada. For air travel, passengers continue to have to wear a mask in Canadian airports and on board flights to, from and within Canada, with few exceptions, and regardless of their vaccination status.

What changes on August 9

Entry to canada.

  • Allow discretionary (non-essential) travel for fully vaccinated American citizens and permanent residents, currently residing in the U.S., who meet all required criteria. This includes the need to submit information electronically through ArriveCAN.
  • Allow entry of unvaccinated children under 12 years of age, or unvaccinated dependent children (due to a mental or physical condition), who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently residing in the U.S. and who are accompanying a fully vaccinated parent, step-parent, guardian or tutor who either has a right to enter Canada (e.g. Canadian citizens and permanent residents), is a U.S. citizen and permanent resident currently residing in the U.S, or is otherwise is permitted entry under the US Prohibition on Entry Order made under the Quarantine Act . They must meet all other required criteria, including submitting information electronically through ArriveCAN and all testing requirements.
  • Travellers who do not meet all the required eligibility requirements for discretionary (non-essential) travel will be denied entry into Canada, precluded from boarding their flight, and/or could face additional fines on arrival. It is therefore important that all travellers find out about whether they are eligible to enter Canada well in advance of their travel, and understand applicable requirements.

Testing Requirements

  • Allow Canadian citizens and permanent residents travelling to the U.S. for less than 72 hours to do their pre-entry test in Canada.
  • Allow individuals who have recovered from COVID-19, but continue to test positive, to present a positive COVID-19 molecular test result on a specimen taken 14 to 180 days prior to arrival in Canada as part of the pre-arrival test requirements.
  • Adjust post-arrival testing for fully vaccinated travellers. Using a new border testing surveillance program at airports and land border crossings, fully vaccinated travellers will not need a post-arrival test unless they have been randomly selected to complete a Day 1 COVID-19 molecular test. This shift responds to the pandemic's evolution and will monitor prevalence in travellers. It will also identify new variants of concern entering Canada and provide intelligence, including vaccine effectiveness.
  • There are no changes to the mandatory testing requirements for unvaccinated travellers.

Temperature screening requirements

  • Due to the improving epidemiological situation in Canada, effective August 9, 2021, Transport Canada will remove the requirement for the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to perform pre-board temperature screening of passengers on all domestic flights and international departures (including Transborder), as well as airport workers.
  • These changes will make the travel process more streamlined, ensuring that passengers spend less time in airports, while still maintaining necessary public health measures (e.g., wearing of masks at airports and on board all flights to, from and within Canada).

Quarantine Requirements

  • Eliminate the three-night government-authorized hotel stay requirement for all travellers arriving by air as of 12:01 a.m. EDT on August 9.
  • Continue to require unvaccinated travellers to undergo Day 1 and Day 8 COVID-19 molecular tests, and complete a mandatory 14 day quarantine , subject to limited exceptions.
  • Unvaccinated children under 12 years of age and dependent children (due to a mental or physical condition) of fully vaccinated travellers will no longer have to complete a 14 day quarantine, but must follow strict public health measures. This includes those travelling from the U.S for discretionary purposes. This means they can move around with their parents, but must avoid group settings - such as camps or daycares - during the first 14 days after their arrival. Unvaccinated children will remain subject to the Day 1 and Day 8 testing requirements. Provinces and territories may have more stringent rules around people who have recently returned from travel. More details will be available in the coming days.

Proof of vaccination for foreign nationals permitted entry for discretionary purposes, who enter on the basis of their vaccination status

Starting August 9, 2021, air carriers will be verifying that the travellers coming to Canada have submitted their information digitally by using the ArriveCAN app or website before they board their flight. Discretionary travellers who are unable to show their ArriveCAN receipt – either on their mobile device or a printed copy - will not be allowed to board their flight to Canada, as they are ineligible to enter Canada. In addition to their ArriveCAN receipt, travellers should carry their actual vaccine certificate with them to show officials at the border entry point.

Discretionary travellers include:

  • Fully vaccinated American citizens or permanent residents who reside in the U.S., and are entering from the U.S. for discretionary (non-essential) travel (starting on August 9, 2021); and
  • Other fully vaccinated foreign nationals coming to Canada for discretionary (non-essential) purposes (intended to start on September 7, 2021)
  • Travellers with a right to entry, (e.g. Canadian citizens and permanent residents), or travellers who qualify for entry under another exemption (e.g. immediate or extended family member) or who are coming to Canada for essential reasons (such as temporary foreign workers, or international students) will not be denied boarding, but will be required to submit information relating to their vaccination status via the ArriveCAN app or website.

Eased quarantine and testing requirements based on vaccination status

  • Individuals who cannot be fully vaccinated due to a health condition for which vaccination is contraindicated according to the vaccine's label may also qualify for the eased quarantine and testing requirements currently available to fully vaccinated travellers, but must follow a modified quarantine. More details will be available in the coming days.
  • Travellers arriving in Canada by marine mode will now be eligible for eased quarantine and testing requirements if they have received the full series of a vaccine - or combination of vaccines - accepted by the Government of Canada at least 14 days prior to entering Canada. Currently, those vaccines are manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). They must also meet all other critieria, including the pre-entry test requirement and the need to submit information electronically through ArriveCAN before or when entering Canada. This is to accommodate for Wi-Fi issues on the water. All travellers must still provide a quarantine plan and be prepared to quarantine, in case it is determined at the border that they do not meet the necessary requirements.

Travel advice:

While Canada continues to trend in the right direction, the epidemiological situation and vaccination coverage is not the same around the world. The Government of Canada continues to advise Canadians to avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada – international travel increases your risk of exposure to COVID-19 and its variants, as well as of spreading it to others. Border measures also remain subject to change as the epidemiological situation evolves. As Canada begins to welcome fully vaccinated travellers from the U.S., the Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation and provide updated travel advice to Canadians.

When Elon Musk set up Tesla’s factory in China, he made a bet that brought him cheap parts and capable workers — a bet that made him ultrarich and saved his company.

Mara Hvistendahl, an investigative reporter for The Times, explains why, now, that lifeline may have given China the tools to beat Tesla at its own game.

Entering Canada

On this page, by private boat, required identification, permanent residents, travelling with children, you and the border services officer.

Whether you’re returning home or visiting, you’ll follow the same 3 steps to enter Canada:

Step 1. Pre-arrival: Use Advance Declaration or complete a Declaration Card

If you’re arriving by air at one of Canada’s participating international airports, you can save time at the border. Submit your customs and immigration declaration online using Advance Declaration up to 72 hours before you arrive in Canada.

If you choose not to submit your declaration in advance, you can complete it at an airport kiosk or eGate. If you’re landing at an airport without kiosks or eGates, you’ll receive a Declaration Card on board the aircraft or other conveyance. Read the instructions and complete the card before you arrive. Have it ready to present to Canadian officials at the airport, along with your identification and other travel documents. If you're travelling with children, please have their documentation ready as well.

If using a Declaration Card, detach and discard the instructions. To help us serve you faster, do not fold the card.

Everyone arriving in Canada must complete a declaration. You can list up to 4 people living at the same residence on one card, or 8 people per Advance Declaration submission.

The Declaration Card or Advance Declaration submission tells us what we need to know about you, your travels and what you’re bringing into the country.

Connecting to another flight

If you’re connecting to another flight or travelling on to another destination and re-boarding the same plane, follow the signs. At some airports, you may have to check your baggage and have it screened again.

If you travel frequently our trusted traveller programs can help

If you're a member of a trusted traveller program, you can skip Step 2 and go directly to the automated kiosks or eGates for faster processing.

Step 2. Arrival: First CBSA checkpoint

When you arrive at the terminal, follow the signs to the first Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) checkpoint, also called “primary inspection.”

If you used Advance Declaration, go to a kiosk or eGate to retrieve your confirmed declaration receipt. Up to 5 people may use a kiosk as a group upon arrival.

Next, a border services officer will examine your:

  • Declaration Card or Advance Declaration kiosk receipt
  • your identification
  • other travel documents

The officer may ask you a series of questions to determine:

  • your immigration status
  • the type of any goods you're bringing with you
  • your duty-free allowance
  • your personal exemption entitlements

Goods not properly declared that are restricted or prohibited in Canada can, under the law, be seized.

Newcomer or coming to Canada to study or work

If you’re a newcomer to Canada, coming to study or work in Canada, you may need to present further documentation. The officer will help guide you through this process. You may ask the officer for help if you don’t speak English or French well.

Step 3. Baggage and second CBSA checkpoint

Go to the baggage claim area. If you must pay duty and taxes, you can pay at most major airports while waiting for your luggage.

Once you’ve picked up your luggage:

  • go to the next CBSA checkpoint
  • Declaration Card, Advance Declaration kiosk or eGate receipt
  • receipt, if you paid duty and taxes for your goods

The officer may direct you to a secondary inspection area.

Here, officers may ask you:

  • for detailed information about your travels
  • to present your luggage and goods for examination

This is a normal part of the travelling process. Your cooperation is appreciated and helps us ensure the safety of Canada, its economy and its residents.

If you’re arriving by land, follow the signs to the first checkpoint, also called “primary inspection.” Here, a border services officer will examine your identification and other travel documents and take your verbal declaration.

Visit U.S. to Canada border wait times for estimated wait times at certain locations.

If you’re arriving by private boat, go directly to a designated marine telephone reporting site and call the CBSA Telephone Reporting Centre (TRC) at 1-888-226-7277 to obtain clearance.

Private boaters that meet certain conditions may report to the CBSA by calling the TRC using cell phone from their location in Canadian waters.

Learn more about reporting requirements for private boaters.

Make sure you carry proper identification for yourself and any children travelling with you to help confirm your legal right to enter Canada. Canada has introduced a new entry requirement, known as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), for certain international travellers who fly to Canada.

Read about the changes and how they may affect you.

The Government of Canada recommends that Canadian citizens travel with a valid Canadian passport because it’s the only reliable and universally accepted travel and identification document available to Canadians for the purpose of international travel.

International transportation companies such as airlines may require travellers to present a passport before boarding. Canadian citizens may face delays or may not be allowed to board the plane or other conveyance if they present other documents such as a:

  • Enhanced Driver's License (EDL)/Enhanced Identification Card (EIC)
  • NEXUS card (used where the program is available)
  • Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card used in FAST lanes
  • Canadian citizenship card
  • Certificate of Indian Status
  • Birth certificate in combination with either a driver's licence or a government-issued photo identification

Permanent residents (immigrants living in Canada who are not yet Canadian citizens) need a valid permanent resident card to return to Canada. Check the expiry date on your card.

Note that a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship is not a travel document.

See Canadian Citizenship for further details.

Parents who share custody of their children should bring copies of the legal custody documents to the border when travelling with their children.

A consent letter should be used for all cross-border travel when a child is travelling:

  • with only 1 parent or guardian
  • in the care of friends or relatives
  • with a group, such as a sports, school, musical or religious group

Example of a consent letter to permit travel by a child with a single custodian or parent.

When travelling with a group of vehicles, parents or guardians should arrive at the border in the same vehicle as the children.

Adults who aren’t parents or guardians should have written permission from the parents or guardians to supervise the children. The consent letter should include addresses and telephone numbers where the parents or guardian can be reached.

Border officers watch for missing children, and may ask detailed questions about the children who are travelling with you.

You may occasionally find yourself going through a more detailed inspection. In some cases, this simply means that you may have to complete a form. In other cases, the border services officer will need to identify the goods you’re bringing into the country or examine your luggage.

Border services officers are legally entitled to examine your luggage as part of their responsibility to protect Canada's safety, economy and environment. You are responsible for opening, unpacking and repacking your luggage.

By making your goods easily accessible for inspection and having your receipts handy, you will be helping the CBSA to help you. It’s a good idea to keep all your receipts for accommodation and purchases, and for any repairs done to, or parts bought for, your vehicle. The border services officer may ask to see them as evidence of the length of your stay and of the value of the goods or repairs.

If you disagree with the amount of duty and taxes that you have to pay, please ask to speak with the CBSA superintendent on duty. A consultation can often resolve the issue quickly and without cost. If you’re still not satisfied, our officers can tell you how to make a formal appeal.

Border services officers may arrest an individual for an offence under the Criminal Code (for example, impaired driving, outstanding arrest warrants, stolen property, abductions/kidnappings) and for infractions under other acts of Parliament (for example, the Customs Act , the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act ).

If you’re arrested, you may be compelled to attend court in Canada. You should note that anyone arrested in Canada is protected by and will be treated in accordance with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms .

RV traffic sits at a standstill along a two-lane road near Madras, Ore., a few days before the 2017 total solar eclipse. Experts say traffic could be heavy, but eclipse watchers shouldn't necessarily be deterred.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."
