Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 Review

Electronic Arts improves upon the solid foundation they laid with Tiger Woods 06 and builds a great game in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07.

By Aaron Thomas on October 20, 2006 at 4:19PM PDT

Tiger Woods' first foray onto the Xbox 360 was a prime example of style over substance. The courses looked great, but they numbered just six and there weren't many different ways to enjoy them. It also didn't play much differently than it did on the consoles--a disappointment for those who were expecting it to be more than just a prettier version of what they had been playing for years. EA Sports has addressed those issues by adding a new aiming system, doubling the number of courses, and adding a host of new play modes. There's still room for improvement, but Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is a great golf game that plays as good as it looks.

Creating your own golfer is still one of the game's highlights.

There's certainly no shortage of ways to occupy yourself with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. You can select from a number of different match and scoring modes, including stroke play, match play, skins, practice, stableford, alternate shot, best-ball, and four-ball. Battle golf, which is a twist on match play, is a new addition. The goal here is to win the most holes--as it always is in match play--but here you are able to remove a club from your opponent's bag after each hole you win. Needless to say, it's great fun to watch your rival tee off on a par five with a two-iron because you've taken all of his woods. Also new this year are bloodsome and greensome matches, both of which are team-based best-ball events. After you and your teammate hit your shots in greensome, you get to pick which ball you're going to play; in bloodsome, your opponent will choose which lie you'll use. One-ball is another new game, where you and your opponent share the same ball and alternate shots. The strategy in one-ball lies in trying to set your opponent up with difficult shots so that you're the one left with a makeable putt. If you're the one who drains the putt, you win the hole. Before each shot, a large blue ring that represents the target area appears on the course. This is the area in which your shot must land, or else it's a "betrayal," and you'll lose a turn. For example, on a par four you may be able to put the ball on the green with your second shot, but that will leave your opponent with a putt--and that's not good. You can, however, shoot the ball into a sand trap that surrounds the green, thereby forcing your opponent to be the one who has to put the ball on the green. This play mode is great for learning how to recover from bad shots, but it can be frustrating to play against the tenacious CPU and is best played against another person.

Right off the bat you'll notice the improved presentation. As soon as the game loads the camera sweeps around a beautiful driving range, finally zooming in on Tiger, who's juggling a ball with his club, a la the Nike commercial from a few years back. From here you can immediately hit the range to practice or jump into a quick game, but you're encouraged to immediately create a golfer so that you may embark on a career. Tiger's unrivaled character creation mode is back and much deeper than in 06. If realism's what you want, it's a breeze to create a male or female golfer in your spitting image, and you're limited only by your imagination when it comes to making zany, off-the-wall characters. You can also customize your player's swing as well as their reactions.

Your created golfer has unlimited potential, but at first they stink. It's up to you to head to the training course to help them develop their skills. Each of your golfer's attributes--power, power boost, ball striking, driving accuracy, putting, recovery, approach, and spin--can be improved by completing short minigames. You can face other golfers in a longest-drive or a putting contest, play quick competitive rounds of T-I-G-E-R or 21, and race the clock in minigames that test your mettle with long irons and your shot-recovery skills. The number of minigames is impressive, but many of them are little more than slight variations of each other. It's still tough to complain about, though, after last year's barren set of options. After completing a challenge your individual attributes are raised, based on what skills the challenge focused on, as well as your performance. In an effort to keep people from training their golfer over and over before venturing out on the course, your attributes are now capped based on your experience. You'll need to actually go out and win some matches before you're able to go any higher than 25 percent in any skill category. This does work as the developer intended, slowing your progression through the game, but it's frustrating to have a skill artificially held back when you've already earned the points to raise it. Should your skills need a little boost, you can always pick up some new clubs or some jewelry for a small skill bonus. New equipment and clothing can be purchased in the pro shop, which is easier to browse this year. If you're lazy and you've got the cash, you can skip all of the "hassle" of playing the game to earn skills, courses, and equipment. A quick trip to the Xbox Live Marketplace and a few hundred points is all it takes to get everything unlocked.

You're going to spend lots of time on the training course.

The team tour mode from the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC versions is nowhere to be found; it has been replaced by the Tiger challenge. Here you'll take your created golfer up against fictitious golfers like Pops Masterson and Big Mo, PGA professionals, and, eventually, Tiger himself. It's understandable that EA wanted to show off new animation for each golfer, but the inability to skip your opponents' turns makes rounds last far too long. However, you can skip the CPU's pre- and post-shot routines once they've started, and you're able to fast-forward their shots once they're in the air. If your interests lie in more-traditional golf, the PGA Tour season, which now uses the FedEx points system to rank players for the PGA's new playoff format, offers up more of a challenge than ever before. You'll first need to train your golfer and then win a few matches in the Tiger challenge, or your golfer won't have a prayer against the punishing schedule of four-day tournaments. You can simulate rounds of a tournament and you don't have to enter every event, but it really would have been nice to have the option of setting how long you'd like tournaments to last.

Should you grow tired of playing solo, you can head online for a greater challenge. There are daily tournaments, ranked and unranked rounds of stroke and match play, as well as alternate game modes, such as best ball, battle golf, three-hole golf, skins, one-ball, four-ball, and alternate shot. We had some difficulty getting into matches, and it was annoying to get booted all the way to the main menu after a round, but once we did get in a game everything ran smoothly and lag was never a problem. There's a small amount of ESPN integration, but it's limited to a ticker that runs across the bottom of the screen, short text news stories, and brief ESPN Radio SportsCenter updates every 20 minutes. NBA Live 07 on the Xbox 360 had the ability to stream ESPN video content while online, but that feature is not available here.

If you just want to stick to the pros, there are 15 professional golfers (and a host of fictional golfers) in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. The list includes the likes of Tiger Woods, Colin Montgomerie, Justin Leonard, John Daly, Jim Furyk, Mike Weir, Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh, and Rich Beem, among others. For the first time, LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam is a playable character. The course list has doubled from six to 12 since last year, but it's still underwhelming when compared to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the game, which have an impressive 21 courses. Joining returning favorites like TPC at Sawgrass and Pebble Beach are Firestone Country Club, Glen Abbey, the Prince Course at Kauai, Spyglass Hill, Bandon Dunes, and the vaunted Scottish course, St. Andrews. Once again, there's no course designer--still one of the series' most glaring omissions after all these years. You can put together your "dream course," using holes from any of the 12 courses in the game, but this doesn't make up for not having a true course editor.

The game looks great, and the presentation is much better this year as well.

Tiger 07's gameplay isn't vastly different than last year, but there are a few changes that make the experience more challenging and enjoyable. Swinging your club uses the tried-and-true method of pulling down and then pushing up on the left analog stick. You can add a draw or a fade by moving the left analog stick down and then up at an angle during your swing. The right stick is used to change where you address the ball. You can hit under the ball to add loft and backspin to a shot, while striking the ball above the center gives your shot a lower trajectory with lots of topspin. A little extra oomph can be put on your shot by pressing the left bumper or the A button during your swing, and spin is added by pressing the same buttons and a directional while the ball is in flight. A new system called "true aiming" makes shot selection a less by-the-books affair by replacing the cursor that essentially pinpointed where your shot would land with a large circle that covers a much wider area. If you hit your shot just right, the ball should land somewhere in that circle. Should you miss, however, you're likely to end up in serious trouble. When using golfers with higher levels of skill, the circle doesn't come into play too often, but anyone playing with a new golfer will frequently find themselves questioning if the extra 10 yards of distance on a club is worth the increased size of the landing zone. You can still take huge risks--you're just more likely to pay for them now. The clumsily implemented gamebreakers from last year are thankfully nowhere to be found.

The standard control scheme for putting works much in the same way it did last year, with a few noticeable changes. You still use the left stick to putt, but you can now add a little extra speed by using the right stick to hit the top of the ball, adding topspin. Conversely, you can take some speed off of a putt by hitting it lower and adding some backspin. Both of these options come in handy for putts that are on either side of the putter's power level. An overlay is placed on the green, and you'll need to read the slope by how fast the white dots move along the grid. This is more important than ever because the ideal putt-cam that shows you the ideal putting line is gone--at least on the default difficulty level. It's still available on the easy setting, and you can turn it on in the game options. Veterans of the series shouldn't have much of a problem adjusting to life without the putt-cam. The basic system is very familiar and it's forgiving enough that you'll still be able to make long putts, except now you won't be making them on every hole.

There's no question that Tiger Woods 07 is a fantastic-looking game. The created golfers look wonderful and have a host of unique animations to bring them to life. Each golfer has a unique swing, which makes them not only look different but also play different. The professional players generally look good, but there are a few that look pretty rough, and many of their animations are canned and repetitive. Tiger, of course, looks great, as do Annika and Vijay. John Daly doesn't look a whole lot like the real John Daly (perhaps this is a good thing), and Colin Montgomerie is downright scary. A new picture-in-picture window shows player reactions in real time as the ball is in the air. This is entertaining for a bit, but most of the golfers don't react in any way that's worth watching more than a few times.

Courses also look better than ever, though like in the rest of the game, there's room for improvement. Vibrant colors, crisp visuals, and little touches, such as flocks of birds flying over the green or waves breaking along the shore, make each course beautiful. On the negative side, some shadows appear and disappear for no reason, green and fairway textures look poor under close inspection, and the rocks on the cliffs at Pebble Beach are last-gen quality at best. Crowds line each hole and will track the ball as it's hit. You can even watch them run up and down the side of the fairway as they scramble for a better view. Unfortunately they don't make much of an effort to get out of the way of your ball. This is a big problem after a drive, where any chance you may have had of your ball rolling onto the fairway is routinely killed by a fan that's anchored to the ground. Occasionally this works in your favor, particularly around the greens when fans sacrifice their bodies and keep errant shots over the green from going too far away.

Most of the audio in Tiger Woods 07 sounds good--or as good as can be expected from a golf game. The crowds are lively and react with enthusiasm to a great shot. David Feherty and Gary McCord are back and seemingly have nothing new to say. The commentary plays it too straight in a game that's otherwise full of personality. Their negative comments appear to have been toned down a bit, but the duo still drinks "Haterade" and just loves to rub it in after a poor shot. For the most part, their observations are accurate, though they'll occasionally praise you for hitting the ball in the rough and chastise you for what ends up being a perfectly good shot. Should you choose to forgo the announcers, there are lots of ambient noises to listen to instead. You'll hear birds chirping, planes flying overhead, and on Pebble Beach, the sea crashing into the cliffs.

Annika makes a welcome first appearance in the Tiger Woods series.

Tiger Woods 06 had some of the most difficult achievements of any game to date. With requirements like "compete in 1,000 online matches" and "make 25 holes in one," it was possible to pour dozens of hours into the game and have no points to show for your efforts. A sizable time commitment is necessary to earn all 1,000 points in Tiger Woods 07, but boosting your gamer score, at least a little, won't be as futile an endeavor as it was last year. Points can be earned in a variety of ways, such as by winning major tournaments, by beating golfers in the Tiger challenge and minigames, and by creating a male or female golfer.

Almost universally, the changes and additions made since last year serve to make Tiger Woods 07 a better game than Tiger Woods 06. However, with many of the big problems out of the way, a few still remain, and other, smaller issues have become apparent. Twelve courses is still on the low side of what one would expect from a Tiger Woods game, a lot of the different modes feel the same, and with many of the graphics being outstanding, the ones that aren't so great are more noticeable. That said, Tiger 07 is a great game, and the improvement in the last 11 months shows that that EA isn't content to maintain the status quo. If you're searching for a great round of video game golf, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is what you're looking for.

  • Leave Blank
  • Twice as many courses as last year
  • Best create-a-character around
  • True aim system adds a new level of challenge
  • Plenty of great-looking fictional and licensed golfers
  • Has nine fewer courses than the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions
  • Not enough variety in the training challenges
  • David Feherty and Gary McCord have worn out their welcome
  • The only way to get "Sunday Tiger" is to buy him off Marketplace

Swing Mechanic

On the Wii version of the game, the player is able to use the Wii-motion controller as they would a real golf club. The option remains to use the traditional [name?] controls using the Wii's Joystick control. For the purpose of scrolling through the menus, it is far easier to point the motion-pointer out of frame and use the Up,Down,Left,Right joypad.

Tiger Challenge

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 saw the return of the Tiger Challenge mode, based on the 2004 version of the game mode, where the player travels the world to challenge various rivals and complete challenges. There are 20 stages in total.

Tournaments and Calender

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 has its own Callender of tournaments, which can be unlocked and played by completing various rounds in the calendar.

One-ball is a new multiplayer game mode featured in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. Two players take it in turns to strike one golf ball one after the other with the winning contestant sinking the final stroke into the cup. Each player must hit the ball within at least half of the remaining distance to the cup for each stroke. Once this is achieved, the next player takes over and repeats the task until the winning opponent sinks the ball into the cup. If the player fails to get their ball within the half remaining distance, they commit a betrayal effectively losing their turn. If the opponent gets their ball into the water or out of bounds, they incur a double betrayal, hence the opposing rival gets three consecutive attempts to sink the ball into the cup and win the hole.

Score does not play a role in winning this game-play mode, nor does being an accurate golfer. In fact, players can benefit from landing their ball into an awkward position to lower the chances of their opponent sinking the following shot, but the player still must at least play their shot in a way so that the remaining distance is less than half. Even betrayals can be used to an advantage as betrayals do not affect the outcome of the score, other than to provide an additional turn to the opponent. This can be useful in certain situations where for example. giving the opponent two shots, is more likely to force them to play the ball within a range that the player than then sink afterwards, such as to lay up the ball outside the target zone, in a difficult position or lie and an approach to the green.

EA Game Face

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 features a range of real life golf courses, 2 fantasy courses from previous games ( Emerald Dragon , Central Park ) and a new fantasy course (Safari CC). However, Safari CC is only available on the Wii edition of the game.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07

What? You're allowed to golf slowly, aren't you?

Being the best isn't always great (or so I'm told). Sometimes, it's enough to make you cry . Or, er, offend people with disabilities . People like to pick on a winner - especially if he's clearly not as good as he could be . That's been the case with the Tiger Woods games for a while, culminating in 2005's totally rubbish Xbox 360 opener, which stumbled drunkenly onto the course with all the grace and vital content of a Fat Les reunion tour. This one's a big improvement.

The basic analogue swing and shot-selection buttons remain, but on the fairways control is refined to emphasise the risk that golfers take trying to cover that extra dozen or so yards. The aiming marker is dispatched, replaced instead with a circle that encompasses any number of potential landing spots, and also grows in size the more ambitious your shot selection. Its impact actually develops you into a better golfer, encouraging you to play safely. You may not make as much ground as an opponent who attempts a shortcut, but most of the time you will find yourself on surer footing with a better chance of success on the next shot. This you remember. Online, it helps nurture the occasional upset - a 315-yard drive might put an opponent on a par-4 green in one shot, but more than likely it will put them in thick rough, or leave them with an 80-foot putt, whereas a sensible tee shot and a reliable 9-iron approach could put you on the lip of the cup.

tiger woods pga tour 07

Putting is also a bit trickier now on default and higher difficulty levels, thanks to the removal of the "ideal putt camera" and caddy tips, leaving you to use movement lines to make putting judgements. As with your other shots, it's possible to tilt the club-head to add spin (off the green it adds height, too), but putting in general is harder and requires consideration, concentration and a gentle swing rather than a vicious thwack. Just like the real thing.

Pleasantly though, Woods 07 is a game of breadth, and those who prefer golf with pace are still caddied for. All of the above is effectively optional - you can enable putt cameras and caddy tips, you can simply play a round as Tiger Woods, you can search for online games where the training wheels remain in place (and, thankfully, find some). The Y button continues to speed up your own and opposing shots' flight (although you can't skip as many animations as you might like), while a broader range of arcade modes and some new mini-games, played out in an attractive golfer's-playground sort of training complex, allow you to dig in without having to wear a frown all the time. Modes like T-I-G-E-R, where the idea is to attempt a shot that your opponent then has to either match or better, introduce a competitive element that fills smaller holes in the day than Tiger's ever aimed for in the past. Think of them as golfing's kickabouts.

These tasks, and other training mini-games, also allow you to develop your custom player's stats without having to embark on 18-hole rounds or gruelling PGA Tour events at every step. The experience system is better in general. Pay attention and hole a long putt and you'll get a luck boost - something that makes a difference to your chances of seeing the ball roll that final inch the next time you're in a similar position. Basing player-growth on actual experience is better than simply giving you points to distribute, and while the system also limits your growth at certain points until you've played a few single-player rounds against proper opposition, we can live with the inconvenience.

tiger woods pga tour 07

A word is also due here for the character-creator in general, because it's much improved, divorced from last year's 'acne randomiser' X button effect, and complemented by a fairly diverse range of accessories that, for once, are quite easily navigated - and offer a small skill boost in places, too. Naturally most of the kids use the tools to dress up like The Neptunes or whichever tightly bound plastic idiot is on MTV that week - because the latest Nike shoes are a profound statement about their individuality - but there's a decent array of frumpy-looking schoolteacher avatars golfing along as well (me, for instance). Anyway, the point is there are lots of options.

And that, obviously, it's not all training, "Battle Golf" and dress-up. Game modes continue to include stroke and match play, as well as four-ball rounds and other rules variations. The big stuff takes the form of Tiger Challenge and the PGA Tour. The former has you face off against a mixture of real and fictional golfers (on the real side, John Daly, Vijay Singh and Arsenal-shirt-wearing Ian Poulter are new, while the fictional gang now boast voice sampling in addition to their "wacky" animations), with several potential opponents usually available at once, and the eventual goal of beating Tiger himself. The PGA Tour is longer-form, as you'd expect, with multiple rounds on the same course, and new FedEx Cup scoring.

Meanwhile, those who found last year's half-dozen course quota stiflingly slight will be pleased, if not overly thrilled, by the addition of six more this time around. But more significant than that is the general improvement in visual quality and presentation. There's a tournament atmosphere again thanks to hundreds of spectators visibly lining the course, but little touches like cloud shadows drifting across the surface of the fairway add further life to the image. Previous games were sometimes like watching motion-captured polygon fidget contests set against a blurry photograph, but you couldn't render the accusation here because everything's crisp and vibrant, not to mention slick - I wouldn't be surprised if the new menu system's snapped up for a VO5 advert.

tiger woods pga tour 07

There are some things you could pick on. Lag in online matches sometimes means it's physically impossible to complete a stroke before the shot-clock expires; groups of spectators are often seen performing the same animation at the same time in the same area, which is one of my all-time gaming bugbears; quite a few of the mini-games are actually rather similar; and it's also fair to say that while some of the courses match the description in the preceding paragraph, others have been shuffled to the back and paid less attention, or suffer from occasional frame-rate dips. What's more, a PS2 or Xbox owner might point out that their (albeit slightly inferior) version boasts 21 courses rather than 12.

EA's made some Orwellian marketing decisions too. We're used to the sort of fluff that argues a game is supernaturally intelligent when it offers to change the skill level after you thump someone by 84 strokes ("reactive difficulty", everyone), but the presence of "NEW!" labels next to individual menu items, as if we're supposed to froth with excitement at the fact less than a quarter of the game is visibly changed at all , is a definite signature of evil. No wonder MGM took the Bond licence away - imagine a Casino Royale game with Daniel Craig loping about wearing a "NEW!" sign on his face.

But then I expect EA will give us the odd duff game to kick around the Internet later this year (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, anyone?), so we might as well be nice to the ones it does relatively well. And this is certainly one of those. Over the years, mistakes in Tiger Woods games have come into sharper focus with each uninspired retread, but this one claws back a few strokes with just a few tweaks and a more accommodating approach. Woods games have often done volume, but this one does fidelity - and while the next-gen golfing genre isn't exactly broad, we suspect being the best in a field of one will do them fine, especially since, in this case, it feels like it is mostly as good as it could be.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 screenshot #1

Putt, swing, and slice with some of the biggest names in golf as you travel to various real and fantasy courses in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. Practice your swing, play against human opponents online, or gather a team of golfers and go head-to-head against Tiger Woods and his team of birdie-scoring buddies. The game features 21 courses including the Four Seasons Resort Avaira, the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Riviera Country Club, the K Club, and more with in-game commentary provided by David Feherty and Gary McCord. Select your character from such golfers as Vijay Singh, Ian Poulter, Annika Sorenstam, and John Daly, or create your own character from a variety of clothing, facial features, equipment licenses, and specialty items.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 comes with several gameplay options including "Team Tour," "Career," "Practice," and mini-games such as One-Ball, Battle Golf, and more. Characters will no longer spend money to earn experience points, and will gain experience by spending time in the "Practice" area shooting from six different tee boxes. Performance of your skills on the practice green translates to improved character stats that carry over into your career game. You also have two types of swing styles, Standard and Swing Stick, and the game will adjust the difficulty based on how well you are playing. To aim your shot, look for the circular area with a size determined by such factors as attributes and club choice, and then take a shot towards your goal. Online play features three person tournaments, stat trackers, leader boards, the ESPN ticker, radio updates, and news.

Tiger 07 is the definitive Tiger Woods experience, an anthology of courses, players, options, and game modes that so packs a disc you wonder how the team at EA did it. And while Tiger continues as the world's most fun golf game in 2007, the now-annual question pops up again: Where does EA go from here? Creative titles like Pro-Stroke Golf and Real World Golf, and a lack of recent innovation on the part of EA, are closing the gap between Tiger and the competition. Still, this only reinforces Tiger's biggest problem. When you're the best, how do you get even better?

Options, options, options. That's really the direction the development team has taken this year. Tiger is really as difficult as you want it to be, and on expert control settings you'll find yourself hard-pressed to break 70. That's mostly because some courses -- especially the fictional ones like Central Park -- have been Tiger-proofed, with greens that have such slope that the blazing grid lines may induce seizure. Some courses, like our old friend Pebble Beach, remain cake (maybe because we've played it for so long).

But on the higher difficulty settings, you'll find the controls unforgiving and a refreshing challenge. I've routinely shot in the high 50s on some courses in the past and those days appear to be over (at least for a few weeks, anyway). The difficulty sliders for environment, opponents and your own swing make this Tiger the most accessible and, for experienced players, the most challenging to date.

After the revolutionary dual analog system debuted in 2003, Tiger has been tweaked with a steady influx of minor putting and swing changes. This year, you can choose from both old and new, so those not in favor of the shot shaping stick to control fade or draw can use the left analog stick alone, Golden Tee style. Even the old-school putting from Tiger 03 is available, if you so desire.

The PC features the familiar mouse and keyboard approach, but you can always plug in an analog controller, if you like.

More golfers, more courses. As far as Tiger fans are concerned with, that's all we want. EA upped the golfer total to 21, adding a few fictional characters and a virtual Annika Sorenstam. There are also 21 courses, including newcomers Aviara in Carlsbad, Calif., the Falls in Vegas, the K Club and the fictional Safari Country Club. Old favorites such as St. Andrews, Bay Hill and The Highlands return as well. In all, there's a lot of content, and that doesn't even include the Team Tour.

So Many Modes

Team Tour is a cross between last season's Rivals Mode, the Tiger Challenge and fantasy football. You'll play through a number of challenges worldwide, improving your created-character's attributes along the way and earning dough to unlock courses and improve your equipment. But you also assemble a foursome to try and take out Team Tiger, improving your teammates along the way as well. It's a fun mode, though one has to wonder if it's the product of a late-night brainstorming session where the team was trying to figure out some kind of new gamemode.

Complementing Team Tour is PGA Tour Season, Real Time Event Calendar, Skills 18, Battle Golf, One Ball, Bloodsome, Greensome, Skins, Stroke Play... the list goes on. The fact is that there are so many gamemodes that there are two different menus for them.

The online offerings are solid as well, including the basic quick match as well as a daily tournament. EA hosts a tournament on a different course each day and you go play alone, recording your score and moving up the leaderboards. My personal favorite is still match play against a friend -- nothing is more annoying than me yelling "dormie!" into the headset during a backswing.

Technically Speaking

It's in the graphics and sound department where EA showed little improvement, which is becoming standard fare for the final versions of current-generation games. The game still looks great -- it just looks as great as it did three years ago. I would never question the genius that is Feherty and McCord in the booth, but I don't think those two have recorded new commentary in a long while.

The Verdict

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 is the greatest Tiger yet, but it's starting to feel like season five of The Sopranos. It's still the greatest show on TV, but it's starting to feel a bit stale. Maybe we have just become inoculated to the greatness; who knows? What is true is that the graphics and sound are straight out of 06, which is straight out of 05.

That said, EA packed a ton of content and options onto that little disc, including difficulty sliders that will leave you bending your sand wedge over your knee. Tiger 07 is the best of the old Tiger; it's the best of the new Tiger; and it's still the best golf title on the market.

Tiger Woods flashes top form but has a ways to go

Tiger Woods flashes top form but has a ways to go

Change Text Size

NASSAU, Bahamas – There’s a clear issue with Tiger Woods’ game. It’s not about the quality of the golf shots. Through two rounds at the Hero World Challenge, Woods has flashed enough to know that the otherworldly talent he’s showcased for 25 years is still inside him.

It’s the quantity.

Thursday’s round of 75 provided the clues for that assertion. Friday’s round confirmed it. For the second day in a row, a solid (or even better) round turned sour down the stretch as Woods ran out of gas. To contend in a PGA TOUR event, there can’t be any give late in a round – mentally or physically. Woods knows that better than anyone. Right now, there’s a bit of both.

To use his own words, he’s “stalled.”

“I just haven't done it. I haven't played in six months. Things are not as sharp as they normally would be,” said Woods, who made four birdies in his first seven holes but faded with three bogeys on the back nine to shoot 2-under 70.

“Certainly there's some good in there and just got to make sure that the good is more consistent than it has been.”

Tiger Woods’ interview after Round 2 of Hero

As far as complaints go, it might be the best-case scenario. Woods’ two rounds at Albany Golf Club this week are the only two competitive rounds he’s played since he withdrew from the Masters and underwent ankle fusion surgery in April. He’s practiced some, but not much, prioritizing recovery over reps in the lead-up. That’s how it looks.

Woods’ limp, noticeable in any public appearance over the last several months, is essentially non-existent. He’s walking without pain, which was far from a certainty after his car accident in 2021. He’s sore, sure. The back injuries of years past leave their scars. But it’s not inhibiting his swing. His ball speed is above TOUR average. And, at least on Friday, he ranked in the top five in driving.

But in the areas of the game where practice really shines, he has shown warts. Woods said in the leadup to this week that he’s played a lot of individual holes but not rounds. That begins to explain why he has been plenty capable of starting fast but can’t conjure that patented Woodsian trait of steering a round home when the swing gets loose. He just hasn’t done it.

It bit him on Thursday when he played the final four holes in 4-over. He made a mess of the easiest hole of the round, the par-5 15th hole. Woods attempted to hit out of a bush following an errant drive, but his ball moved a foot and forced him to hit backward. He wound up making a double bogey.

It crept up on Friday, too. He shot a front-nine 32, those four early birdies accompanying five relatively stress-free pars. But what looked easy at the beginning of the round was laborious at the finish. After putting well all day, Woods three-putted from 16 feet on No. 13. He missed a short birdie putt on the 14th, then bungled the par-5 15th again. In a greenside bunker after two shots, Woods hit an uncharacteristically poor bunker shot to 30 feet. Then he did something he can’t ever remember doing. He putted it off the green, back into the same bunker he just played out of.

Tiger Woods cards four birdies in first seven holes at Hero

“That was not a good putt. It was downwind and I hit it way too hard. It got going on the wind and got going on the grain and was gone,” said Woods, who made bogey and joked, “it was better than yesterday.”

He made a bogey on the 16th, the hardest hole of the week, too. However, the par-3 17th hole showed a glimmer of improvement. In the first round, he landed his tee shot about a club short of his intended target and three-putted for a bogey. On Friday, he hit it pin-high and holed the 27-footer for birdie.

Improvement is all Woods is looking for.

“This week is a great beta test to figure out what I can do, what the plan is going forward, what we're going to do in the gym, what I need to do, and just overall just analyze what it's like to compete and play,” he said.

There remain glimmers of the old Woods, who won 82 times on TOUR and racked up majors at a historic rate. There’s still a propulsion to his game when he’s rolling. Properly executed shots stacking upon each other, each one making the following one just a bit better, leading the viewing public to believe he will never make a bogey again. Woods has walked with that patented swagger in spurts, stalking putts and strutting down fairways.

That’s the long-term takeaway. He’s healthy (at least as much as Woods can be these days). And when Woods is healthy, great golf remains inside of him. Now, it’s on him to produce it with the regularity required to contend again.

Answering golf's biggest questions after Scottie Scheffler's Masters win

Scottie Scheffler tries to put into words what it means to win the 2024 Masters and wearing the iconic green jacket for the second time. (1:24)

The 2024 Masters tournament is over and for the second time in three years Scottie Scheffler reigns supreme. With Scheffler now the owner of two green jackets, the rest of major season will feature the world's best players trying to take down the world No. 1.

From Scheffler's potential to Rory McIlroy's major quest to Tiger Woods' future plans, here are six lingering questions as the golf world shifts its focus from Augusta to the PGA Championship at Valhalla Country Club in May.

What's the ceiling for Scheffler?

Schlabach: I honestly don't think Scheffler has a ceiling right now. Over the past two years, he has matured tremendously as a golfer. He admitted Sunday that playing golf will become less of a priority after his wife, Meredith, gives birth to their first child later this month.

But Scheffler also said that he will always care deeply about winning golf tournaments -- almost wanting to win too much. I think capturing a second green jacket is confirmation that he's the best golfer in the world. He has won nine times since February 2022, but only one of them was at a major championship.

Now, he has won two green jackets. I don't think it's a question of whether Scheffler will win another major championship. It's a question of how many he's going to win and how long it's going to take him to pile them up.

Honestly, is it too early to talk about him winning a potential Grand Slam this season? His ball striking and short game are at a completely different level than the rest of the fields he's playing.

Scheffler has played 35 competitive rounds in PGA Tour events this season (the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was shortened to 54 holes because of weather) and still hasn't recorded a round over par. That's absurd.

"I try not to think about the past or the future too much," Scheffler said. "I love trying to live in the present. I've had a really good start to the year, and I hope that I can continue on this path that I'm on.

"I'm going to continue to put in the work that's got me here. I mean, yeah, that's pretty much it. I'm going to continue to put in the work, keep my head down. I like when I step up on the tee at a tournament, being able to tell myself that I did everything I could to play well and the rest isn't up to me."

Uggetti: Scheffler isn't just the best golfer in the world right now. He also seems to be the most self-aware and level-headed one, too. That's a dangerous combination. On Sunday, Scheffler showed he can win any tournament he plays in and that he has the perfect mindset to do it.

"I feel like playing professional golf is an endlessly not satisfying career," Scheffler said. "I wish I could soak this in a little bit more. Maybe I will tonight when I get home. But at the end of the day, I think that's what the human heart does. You always want more, and I think you have to fight those things and focus on what's good."

Don't get Scheffler wrong. He still wants to win. And he said as much, admitting how much he loves winning and hates losing. As if to prove his point, he's teeing it up at Hilton Head on Thursday and will undoubtedly be the favorite to win.

That's Scheffler's new reality, if it wasn't already before: He will be expected to win and questioned when he doesn't. But if anyone is prepared to shoulder those expectations, it's him. And if anyone has the game to keep winning, be it PGA Tour events or majors this year and beyond, it's him.

Is Rory ever going to complete the career Grand Slam?

Schlabach: I'm still a believer in Rory finally winning a green jacket and becoming only the sixth men's golfer to complete the career Grand Slam in the Masters era. I don't think his performance at Augusta National was a result of him buckling under pressure or wanting a green jacket too much. His current form just isn't great, and he knows it.

McIlroy carded a 1-under 71 in the first round and a 6-over 77 in the second. He didn't play well in the windy conditions, but he wasn't the only one who struggled. He has just one top-10 finish in seven tour events, so his results weren't great coming into Augusta National.

After Sunday's round, McIlroy said he was confident he can turn things around before he plays the final three majors. He's scheduled to play in this week's RBC Heritage and with Shane Lowry in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event April 25-28. It sounds like Rory is going to keep grinding to figure things out.

"Yeah, probably not the right time to be analytical at the moment, but I think as well if you're really going to make wholesale changes it's hard to play a lot of golf and make them at the same time," McIlroy said.

"I don't feel like I need to make wholesale changes. That's why I'm playing a lot. But if the time comes that I need to make wholesale changes with my golf swing and really try to reassess, it could be a six-month to a year process. ... I don't think I'm there yet, but there may come a time where I need to address that and really go back to the drawing board."

Uggetti: Everything about McIlroy's experience and talent indicates that he will win another major. Whether it can be at Augusta is a whole other question.

As the four-time major winner talked about this week, he has tried almost every different approach coming into the Masters -- arriving early, arriving late -- and though he has done everything from finish in the top-10 to miss the cut the past few years, he has yet to come close to winning.

"All I can do is come here and try my best," McIlroy said after his 1-under round Saturday. "That's what I do every time I show up. Some years it's better than others. I've just got to keep showing up and try to do the right thing."

Though McIlroy leaves Augusta with a tie for 22nd, there are several opportunities this year for him to add to his major total. He heads to Valhalla for the PGA Championship next, the site of his last major win in 2014. Familiarity hasn't done much for McIlroy at Augusta -- or elsewhere for that matter -- but his game is simply too good to not result in another major.

I'm curious to see how McIlroy approaches Augusta next year after another disappointing result. Will he play more? Will he play less? Will he see another swing coach? Or can he simply stay the course? This year, McIlroy was a firsthand witness to how Scheffler was able to conquer Augusta for the second time in three years.

McIlroy needs only one, but perhaps the key would be winning a major before Augusta. Of course, that's easier said than done, but if McIlroy can win at Valhalla or Pinehurst or Royal Troon, maybe some of the pressure surrounding this week can dissipate and allow him to freely chase after the coveted fourth major on his résumé.

Biggest winner(s) of the tournament?

Schlabach: Besides Scheffler, it has to be Sweden's Ludvig Åberg , who finished solo second at 7 under in his Masters debut. The former Texas Tech star was trying to become the first golfer to win the Masters in his debut since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979.

Aberg would have been only the third player to win a major championship in his first start since the Masters was first played in 1934 -- Ben Curtis (2003 Open Championship) and Keegan Bradley (2011 PGA Championship) are the others.

Aberg, 24, won the Omega European Masters on the DP World Tour in September, competed for the winning European Ryder Cup team in Rome, and then captured his first PGA Tour victory at the RSM Classic in November.

According to Data Golf, Aberg led the Masters field in strokes gained: putting (3.19) and was third in strokes gained: off the tee (1.66). He has a complete game.

"I think he showed why at the Ryder Cup," McIlroy said. "I think every stage throughout his very, very young career, he's shown that he belongs. Gets the win in Europe, plays the Ryder Cup, gets the win in the States, playing in his first Masters, contending on the back nine on Sunday. He's sort of proven at every stage that he's played at that he belongs."

Uggetti: Let's talk about Max Homa . Though the final result might not have been what Homa and his social media devotees wanted, the week was undoubtedly a win for him. For the first time at Augusta, Homa was in true contention, and that counts for something. He played great golf and managed his way around a tough course by showing he belongs as a top-10 player in the world.

Homa has learned to use patience to his advantage, and though this result will require even more patience, Homa is equipped to handle it.

"I thought I handled myself great," Homa said Sunday. "Really didn't feel like I blinked."

There are certainly shots Homa would like to have back -- such as the tee ball on 12 that resulted in a double bogey -- but in the face of Scheffler's dominance, Homa was able to find solace in how he competed all week and what it meant for his chances at future majors.

"I just feel like I learned. I feel like I took a big leap," Homa said. "The rhetoric on me, and this is from myself, as well, is I have not performed in these things, and I performed for all four days. I didn't throw a 65 in there and sneak my way in. I had to sleep on this every single day, this feeling and kind of this monkey on my back. For me, I think it'll change some things, and then in other ways it'll change nothing at all."

Biggest loser(s) of the tournament?

Schlabach: I'm not sure if anyone has had back-to-back endings at the Masters as painful as Justin Thomas' the past two seasons.

In 2023, JT carded bogeys on three of the last four holes to miss the cut at the Masters by 1 stroke, which left him standing under an umbrella in the rain with his arms crossed in disbelief.

This year, Thomas was in great shape to make the cut and possibly make a move on the weekend. But then he went 7 over on the final four holes to miss the cut by 1 stroke. That's going to sting for a while.

Uggetti: Several golfers finished below Jon Rahm this week, but plenty of golfers finished above him, too, including Scheffler, who beat Rahm by 20 shots. As a defending Masters champion, it's never easy to be the one who has to put the green jacket on the winner knowing full well you did not retain it.

But for Rahm, the dilemma goes beyond Butler Cabin. He showed up to Augusta having played less golf in the lead-up than any other year because of his departure to LIV Golf. It was unclear how much his game would suffer, if at all, from playing in 54-hole events and not tournaments like the Genesis Invitational, where he had also won in 2023.

Rahm looked sluggish, never seeming to find the ideal form to compete, let alone contend. It's difficult to repeat as a Masters champion, but it's also not a great sign that Rahm will leave Augusta and have to wait a week before heading to Australia and Singapore to play against worse fields in order to get ready for the next major in mid May.

Favorites for majors?

Schlabach: The next major championship, the PGA Championship on May 16-19, is going to require a complete game. Based on what I saw at Augusta National, I wouldn't be surprised to see Aberg pick up his first major. But for now, it's hard to pass up Scheffler. I'm tempted to pick him for one or two more. I'm just not sure how being a father for the first time will affect him.

As far as the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina on June 13-16, I'll go with Norway's Viktor Hovland , the reigning FedEx Cup champion. I know his game was a mess at the Masters, but his game sets up perfectly for Pinehurst No. 2. Hovland hits the ball long and accurately off the tee, and he's one of the best ball strikers in the world with an iron in his hand. There's plenty of time for him to get his form back in order before the U.S. Open.

Against perhaps better judgment, I'll pick McIlroy to win The Open at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland on July 18-21. McIlroy's major drought will be nearly 10 years long by then -- he last won at the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla -- and it has to end at some point.

He tied for fifth at Royal Troon in 2016 and for sixth at Royal Liverpool during Brian Harman 's breakthrough major win in July 2023. He tied for fifth at the 2016 Open at Royal Troon and had two top-six finishes in the past two Opens.

Uggetti: The PGA Championship at Valhalla will be very familiar for Rory McIlroy -- who won his last major there in 2014 -- but after watching Ludvig Aberg chart his way around Augusta National Golf Club this past week, it's difficult not to see him having a real shot at any of the year's remaining three majors.

The 24-year-old golfer from Sweden has already shown he can compete at the PGA Tour level and this week, during his first Masters, he did nothing to dissuade the notion that he will be a major winner one day. Aberg hung in with the No. 1 player in the world, Scottie Scheffler, and ...

Speaking of Scheffler, when it comes to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, there's little to no need to look past Scheffler whose ballstriking should shine on the famous No. 2 course. With improved putting and an underrated short game, I could see Scheffler replicating the kind of performance Martin Kaymer had in 2014, when he went wire-to-wire at Pinehurst to win the U.S. Open by eight shots.

Of all of this year's majors, the Open Championship at Royal Troon seems like the toughest to predict this far ahead. Weather will likely be a factor, and after watching Brian Harman dominate the field at Royal Liverpool, it could really be anyone's game in July. McIlroy should once again fair well, but I like Tommy Fleetwood's chances, too. He keeps getting close and just finished top 10 at the Masters, too.

What's next for Tiger?

Uggetti: Even after looking like a shell of himself Saturday and Sunday and finishing 16-over for the tournament, Woods didn't hesitate in verbally committing to the rest of the year's majors after his final round concluded.

"I'm going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst, Valhalla and Troon, but that's kind of the game plan," Woods said.

What will likely be more telling is if Tiger plays any other events at all. He had played only 24 competitive holes of golf coming into Augusta and in some instances, the rust really showed this weekend. On Saturday, he looked to be laboring, and though he returned Sunday and appeared to be doing much better, the question of how his body will continue to hold up remains.

Woods, however, remains undeterred from continuing to improve and compete no matter what.

"Keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing," Woods said of what's next. "Hopefully the practice sessions will keep getting longer."

It's clear that the more golf Woods plays, the more prepared he will be for the majors in which he's still trying to compete. But it's not that easy when his body is still a daily obstacle he'll have to overcome. At least this week, he was able to finish 72 holes.

Schlabach: While posting the worst round of his Masters career (10-over 82) and worst 72-hole total as a professional (16-over 304) had to be humbling for the 15-time major champion, the fact that he finished a 72-hole tournament was a step in the right direction.

Outside of Saturday's third round, when he lost his swing and struggled in windy conditions, he didn't look that bad. He drove the ball well off the tee and had a really good short game. His iron play and putting looked rusty, but that was to be expected after he played only 24 competitive holes before the Masters.

The fact that Tiger set a Masters record with his 24th consecutive cut is pretty remarkable.

Tiger Woods hits from the bunker on the 16th hole during final round at the Masters golf...

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods finished the Masters on Sunday with a record he could do without, walking off the course with a 16-over 304, his  highest 72-hole score  in a career that spans three decades.

Woods’ previous high was 302 at the Memorial in 2015 following a career-worst 85 in the third round. He has only failed to break 300 one other time at the Masters was two years ago when he shot 78-78 on the weekend and finished at 301.

All of that hardly mattered to the crowd.

The 48-year-old Woods, who is still dealing with the effects of numerous surgeries that have impacted his body and limited his playing time on the PGA Tour, received a huge roar from the crowd as he  pitched close to the hole on No. 18  and made par.

Wearing his traditional Sunday red, Woods tipped his hat the crowd.

Woods was in last place among the 60 players who made the cut when he finished. The previous time he finished in last place was in the 2020 Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

The patrons flocked to see the man who took golf’s popularity to new heights, even if he isn’t been the dominant player he once was at Augusta National.

Woods hasn’t really been competitive here since 2020 when he finished tied for 38th one year after his stunning fifth victory at age 43.

He finished 13 over two years ago, then was forced to withdraw in 2023 in the third round due to injuries that weren’t helped by the cold, rainy weather that had taken a toll on his body.

For a short time this week Woods showed glimpses of the past.

He played the first two rounds in 1 over to make the cut for a record 24th time. But the final two rounds were a struggle for Woods, who posted his  worst round of his career at a major  with an 82 on Saturday.

He played the final 36 holes in 15 over, shooting 77 on Sunday in his 100th career round at the Masters.

Before the round Woods appeared to receive some swing tips from his 15-year-old son Charlie on the practice range.

Things started off well enough, but that didn’t last long.

After playing the first two holes in 1 under, Woods made a bogey on No. 3 before things started to unravel on the par-4 fifth hole when he took an unplayable lie andhad to be driven back to the tee box in a golf cart to hit again. He wound up with a triple-bogey 7.

He added another bogey on the 6th.

He nearly chipped in from the sand on No. 16, giving fans a thrill and bringing back fond memories of  his iconic chip in in 2005  en route to the fourth of his five championships at Augusta.

The once-dominant Woods played with Neal Shipley, the only amateur to make the cut at the Masters.

The age difference between the two was notable.

Woods’ streak of cuts made at the Masters began in 1997, before the 23-year-old Shipley was born.

Even with Woods being out of contention he still attracting the usual huge throng of fans eager just to get a glimpse of the player that became the face of the sport. Fans applaud after every Woods’ shot — good or bad — and continue to shout encouragement his way.

2024 Masters leaderboard, winner: Scottie Scheffler's patience begets second green jacket in three years

Scheffler displayed a disciplined approach that, combined with extraordinary ball striking, turned sunday into an epic coronation at augusta national golf club.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Three straight birdies at the turn made the inevitable reality as Scottie Scheffler pulled away from a packed leaderboard at the 2024 Masters to become the 10th man in history to claim two green jackets in a three-year span. The 27-year-old Scheffler, spending his 82nd straight week as the No. 1 golfer in the world, left no doubt Sunday that what was already known is indeed true: every golf tournament he plays goes through him.

Scheffler finished 11 under -- four strokes clear of the field -- after entering the 88th playing of the Masters as an overwhelming favorite. He did nothing to dissuade his supporters over the first three rounds, either leading or staying within a single stroke after 18, 36 and 54 holes entering Sunday's finale.

Once a two-stroke lead after three holes became a four-way tie entering the turn Sunday, Scheffler flipped a switch and never looked back. He added to that three-birdie stretch from Nos. 8-10 by scoring three more on the 13th, 14th and 16th to keep Ludvig Åberg (-7) -- finishing second while playing in his first career major championship -- at arm's length.

"It's a difficult golf course to close out a win on," Scheffler explained. "You can't play overly defensive. ... You have to play to the correct spot and hit really good golf shots. I did that to the best of my abilities today and was fortunately able to hit some really key shots and make some nice birdies there on the back nine. Really, from hole 8 on, I played really, really nice golf."

Scheffler on Sunday became the 18th man to win two Masters and the first to do so over a three-year span since Bubba Watson (2012, 2014). He is also the fourth-youngest two-time Masters champion and the eighth golfer to win the first two major championships of his career at Augusta National.

With the 2024 tournament being his fifth Masters appearance, Scheffler is the second-fastest to have green jackets take up two hangers in his closet, the quickest to the achievement in 88 years (Horton Smith, third appearance, 1936).

Despite how simple Scheffler can make the game look, this Masters was anything but easy for the top name in the game. His iron play wasn't at his usually excellent level for most of the week, his tenor was tested plenty -- his pregnant wife and best friend not by his side like usual , instead at home days or weeks away from giving labor -- but when the correct shots in the correct moments were called upon, Scheffler answered.

Fighting his swing early on Sunday, Scheffler found himself in a dog fight with Åberg, Collin Morikawa and Max Homa all nipping at his heels. Scrambling saves were required to maintain his lead as he missed greens both short and long.

An uneasy feeling, Scheffler's short game took matters into its own hands. At its best when the tournament is often its tensest, his soft touch produced a stunner on the third from the bunker for his first birdie of the day.

His pursuers purred and had their moments, though. Åberg turned in 33 to touch the lead, Morikawa answered a Scheffler birdie on No. 8 with one of his own, and Homa lashed a mighty approach into 10.

The peloton was formed with 10 holes to play, and the thought of four of the best players in the world jostling through the second nine at Augusta National on Sunday raced through the minds of many. Unfortunately his peers, Scheffler raced away from the three-player pile up.

First, it was Morikawa who couldn't keep up as the two-time major champion needed two from the greenside bunker on No. 9 and ultimately carded a double bogey. Another followed on the 11th when his second found a watery grave.

Åberg had crashed just before them with the same fatal mistake. The Masters rookie battled back, it was too little too late. He ultimately became the third debutant in the last five years to finish runner-up.

Homa stood as Scheffler's last real threat as he sent a prayer into the air on Amen Corner's treacherous par-3 12th. It wasn't answered as Homa's ball traveled a yard too long, took a firm bounce and found a bush. Another double bogey ensued.

From a pack of four, only Scheffler was left standing.

While others took the bait and got greedy, Scheffler displayed discipline. While others tried to tame a brutally difficult Augusta National, Scheffler stayed patient. While others' emotions got the best of them, Scheffler remained calm.

Scheffler's superpower, his mental game, shined through when it mattered most. His ball striking gets praised and his short game is respected, but Scheffler's greatest strength has nothing to do with the club in his hand and everything to do with the mind of the person wielding it. The one now donning a second green jacket in three years.

Youngest two-time Masters champions

2024 masters leaderboard breakdown.

2. Ludvig Åberg (-7): After starting his Masters career with a 73, Åberg fired three straight under-par rounds including the only one in the 60s on Friday. A member of the penultimate pairing on Sunday, the Masters rookie felt it on the greens early. He curled in a ticklish birdie on No. 2 and another on No. 9 to head into the second nine with a share of the lead. Getting too aggressive down the hill into the 11th green, the young Swede's approach found the water and led to a double bogey -- his only dropped shots of the day. Åberg bounced back with two birdies over his next three holes to apply a smidge of pressure on Scheffler, but by then, the damage was done. The major debutant will learn from this mistake and be better for it. For now, he'll have to settle for a solo second.

T3. Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood (-4): Both Morikawa and Homa looked strong early. The two-time major champion did not miss a single approach shot across his first eight holes but was unable to connect on the greens. He stood square with Scheffler through this stretch of the golf course, but greed got the best of him on No. 9 when he tried to get too much out of his approach ultimately leading to the first of two double bogeys in a three-hole stretch.

Meanwhile, Homa was a surgeron around Augusta National. Picking and choosing his spots with care, the 33-year-old's birdie on the long 10th meant he had jumped into a share of the lead. He may have been too cautious when all is said is done as he erred long on the 12th, which led to his double bogey and refused to hit driver on the par-5 13th electing to play it as a three-shot hole. Still, it represents Homa's best major result and the return of major Morikawa.

"Greed got the best of me," Morikawa said. "Nine, can't miss it over there and can't leave it in the bunker. Eleven, just tried to hit too perfect of a shot. It's not like at that point I was trying to press. I knew where I stood. Yeah, it's just can't do that. In the past, I haven't done it, but kind of where the game's at. You kind of find your little stride. We put a lot of pieces of the puzzle together this week, but after watching Scottie this week, I know what to do if I really want to close this gap on what he's doing and how impressive he's playing."

T6. Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau (-2): After shooting the round of the tournament (65) on Thursday, DeChambeau carded three straight over-par rounds. The former U.S. Open champion fared well in the difficult conditions on Friday, but he lost his touch on the greens over the weekend. Remaining patient for the first half of the tournament, his aggression got the better of him late on Saturday and sunk his Masters chances. He fought back nicely with his hole-out on 18 in Round 3 and a couple birdies in the middle of his first nine on Sunday, but it was all for not. DeChambeau's T6 is his first finish inside the top 20 in his Masters career.

Take it in, Scottie Scheffler!

That is his sixth birdie in his last nine holes. Scheffler tacks one on 16 and his lead is four with two holes to play. The green jacket might as well be his.

3 up 3 to go

Scottie Scheffler makes par on No. 15 to remain at 10 under and three clear of Ludvig Aberg. Three pars should secure him his second Masters title in three years.

Scheffler birdies 14

He is up three with four to go. He taps in his fifth birdie in the last seven holes and now heads to the par-5 15th. Aberg was unable to go for the green in two after a wayward drive and needs to put a wedge close.

Aberg keeps fighting

The young Swede has rattled off two straight birdies to get within two of Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 just made birdie on 13 to get to 9 under. It looks like it will come down to these two as Max Homa sits four adrift at 5 under with only four holes to play.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 Review

Tiger gets a bit better on the psp. but how good is it.

Jonathan Miller Avatar

Tiger 07 is a great game of golf on the go. While slimmed down in terms of content, there's still plenty to do with PGA Season, some forgettable mini-games and online play. Visually, Tiger has a great sense of style and looks almost as good as the PS2 version, with the exception of some blocky player models. Tiger is a nice challenge when starting out, but maxed-out characters will have no problem carving up the course list -- and that's the way it should be.

Tiger Woods made history again this week by making the Masters cut for a record 24th consecutive time. But he couldn’t do much more than that.

He shot a five-over-par 77 on Sunday, a day after a dismal 82 in the third round.

Woods was able to finish a tournament for the second time since the start of 2023.

“It was a good week all around,” he said, still upbeat after his Sunday round. “I think that coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately yesterday it didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted it to.”

Woods got a rousing ovation from the spectators as he made his way up the 18th hole and into the clubhouse.

Jon Rahm, of Spain, celebrates holding the Masters trophy winning the Masters.

What do Masters champions get besides the green jacket? And what is on the trophy?

A lot of people don’t know about the silver trophy, a model of the clubhouse that weighs about 20 pounds and is the size of a modest birthday cake.

April 13, 2024

This marked the fifth anniversary of Woods’ miraculous Masters win in 2019, when he collected his fifth green jacket.

He said the conditions presented a particular challenge this year.

“Just the wind and what it was doing out here to the golf shots and the balls and putting, how difficult the course was playing,” he said. “It doesn’t take much to get out of position here. Unfortunately, I got out of position a lot yesterday and a couple times today.”
