"Today we premiere the official video for his [Tinsley's] version of Son House’s “ Death Letter Blues .” Ellis explains, “Son House’s ‘Death Letter Blues’ is one of the greatest delta blues songs of all time. It has been the centerpiece of my acoustic performances for a long time. Eddie 9V’s gritty, low fi production gave it the perfect hard edge. On this song I’m playing my 1937 National O series steel resonator guitar with a brass slide.”

Alligator Records Announces Tinsley's Debut Solo Acoustic Album
On Friday, February 9, 2024 , Alligator Records will release Naked Truth , the first-ever solo acoustic album from world-renowned Atlanta-based guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Tinsley Ellis . The new album is steeped in the folk blues traditions of Muddy Waters, Skip James, Son House, Robert Johnson and even Leo Kottke. To the casual fan, this might seem to be a new direction, but for Ellis, it’s an extension of his music, as he taps into the raw essence of the blues.
“This is a record I’ve always wanted to make, and one that my longtime fans have been asking for,” he says, noting he’s included an acoustic mini-set in his concert performances for years. In the last 12 months, Ellis has already performed over 100 solo shows, many as co-bills with his Alligator label-mate Marcia Ball. “I’m having so much fun playing these shows,” he says.
On Naked Truth (his 21st album), Ellis swaps his blistering, guitar-fueled full band workouts for equally passionate, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. His famed guitar chops and musical creativity are on full display throughout the album’s 12 songs, including nine newly written originals.
Naked Truth was produced by Ellis, with the foot-stomping cover of Son House’s Death Letter Blues produced by Atlanta roots musician Eddie 9V. The album was recorded live in the studio using Ellis’ beloved 1969 Martin D-35 (a gift from his father) and his 1937 National Steel O Series guitars. Whether intricately fingerpicking the Martin or playing hair-raising slide on the National Steel, Ellis delivers each song with unvarnished intimacy.

TINSLEY ELLIS ANNOUNCES MASSIVE 2024 NAKED TRUTH SOLO ACOUSTIC TOUR
An exciting, emotional guitarist and a strong, evocative songwriter…One of modern blues’ greatest performers. —Vintage Guitar A legend of American blues music…An American music treasure…Ellis delivers a sermon on the power and glory of the blues. —Premier Guitar Powerful, spine-tingling guitar and gritty, soulful vocals. —Relix
On Tuesday, December 12, Atlanta-based guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Tinsley Ellis announced the first set of dates for his massive, months-long 2024 Naked Truth solo acoustic tour. On Friday, February 9, Alligator Records will release Naked Truth , Ellis' first-ever solo acoustic album. That same night, he'll kick off the tour in the nearby Decatur, Georgia club, Eddie's Attic, before hitting the road. "Two guitars and a car,” he says of the simplicity of his North American touring situation. “When folks come to see me, I’ll have the guitars I used on the record with me, so what fans hear on the album is what they’ll get live."
Naked Truth is steeped in the folk blues traditions of Muddy Waters, Skip James, Son House, Robert Johnson and even Leo Kottke. On Naked Truth (his 21 st album), Ellis swaps his blistering, guitar-fueled full band workouts for equally passionate, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. According to Ellis, “In this format there’s a new depth to the emotion of my music. When it’s just you, your voice and your guitar, you have to deliver raw, honest emotion to your audience. You can’t just give them volume, energy and exciting playing. The audience has to feel what you’re putting into the song and has to believe you. When I play and sing in the solo acoustic format, there is truly nowhere to hide. I can’t hide behind a loud, distorted guitar. I can’t hide behind a drum beat or a bass line. It’s just me and my instrument, stripped bare of the other players and their various instruments. In a way, it’s a form of confession. It’s the artist’s most honest musical statement of his or her songs.” Naked Truth is a revelation. Stripped of the electric fervor that defined his previous works, Ellis' acoustic music carries a rawness that speaks directly from his soul. The songs unveil another side of Tinsley Ellis, but one that is totally recognizable to his fans. His gruff, full-throated vocals intertwine seamlessly with the bare, acoustic arrangements, creating an album that is both timeless and immediate. No Depression says, “Ellis shines. When the tempo slows, the intensity doesn’t waver.” Blues Music Magazine states, “Tinsley Ellis is a powerful and commanding presence. His music is impossible not to enjoy.” Rolling Stone declared, "His eloquence dazzles.”

Tinsley Ellis – Acoustic Songs and Stories @ City Winery
Atlanta’s Tinsley Ellis is on tour. Again. That’s the life of a bluesman. With 19 albums under his name, Ellis is well known in blues and blues rock circles, his career consistently demonstrating a knack for coming up with clever lyrics on life and love that fit the blues mold and the requisite guitar chops to be successful. Having recorded and toured with various support personnel for electric blues/rock shows, he’s mixing it up this year. As titled, “Acoustic Songs and Stories” delivers on its promise.
For those who follow him on Facebook, Ellis releases an acoustic “Sunday morning coffee song” about every other week, and he includes acoustic songs on his electric sets. So why not make a whole show of it? Ellis played two sets, each set split between his Martin D-35 and his 1937 National Style O (metal) resonator.
There’s a lot of name dropping in his stories. The Allmans, BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Leo Kottke and others that he’s met or played with. These are shared for general interest, humor and a touch of humility as well. Those stories belong on the tour rather than in a review, and this was the perfect type of show for an artist to share his music, his musical heritage and connect and entertain the audience in a different way.
Ellis clearly knew what he wanted to play to begin each set, but after that it seemed he searched his music stand for something that suited him, perhaps to follow a story he wanted to tell (not that he actually read the music). Ellis didn’t introduce each song (many were his own touching on spots of his career), and many were left to guess at. For the covers, highlights included Son House’s “Death Letter Blues,” Muddy Waters’ “I’ve Got to Love Somebody,” The Rolling Stones’ “No Expectations,” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “Sitting on Top of the World,” a song recorded with prominent harmonica and piano and only background guitar. He also sang “Multi-colored Lady” by Gregg Allman, and I could swear he replaced the lyric with “Monte Carlo lady,” which seems to be one of those lyrics often misheard.
City Winery hosted his performance well, with crystal clear audio. What was lost in any sort of blues bar dive ambience was more than made up for by a very tuned, attentive and appreciative audience who listened to the music and refrained from tableware noises.
Catch his tour while you can. You won’t be disappointed.

Tinsley Ellis Brings Acoustic Tour to Capricorn Sound Studios for Two Shows on 2/4
The early sun is shining when Tinsley Ellis answers the phone with a relaxed but no less joyful, “Go dawgs!” It’s a cool morning after UGA supremely wrested another National Championship, this time from Texas Christian University, and spirits are high throughout the Peach State. For Georgia bluesman Ellis, who’s embarking on a first-ever solo acoustic tour that lands in Macon for two shows on Saturday, February 4th, it’s one of many sweet moments in the wake of a pandemic that briefly grounded a near non-stop forty-year career.
“We had to drive all the way back from the middle of the tour that was supporting Ice Cream In Hell ,” recalls Ellis. “That would’ve been in March of 2020. I got a phone call, and they said I had to come home– it just went down so quickly! The long drive back from Northern California to Georgia was brutal! I go back home and just sorta stared into the abyss for a couple o’ weeks, and then decided, ‘I don’t wanna lose my chops!’ ‘Cause forty-plus years of touring, I was always working! A friend of mine said, ‘Why don’t you designate from seven or eight in the morning ’til noon every day as your songwriting time?'”
Ellis moved his personal studio from Tucker, Georgia into his Atlanta basement and was determined to stay vital and creative. But in the downtime, he also reconnected with the simple luxury of being a fan again.
“I was able to go down there with a cup o’ coffee in the morning ’cause I’m a morning guy, put on the computer through the big speakers and listen to music and get inspired– dig back through B.B. King recordings and Allman Brothers Band and Mike Bloomfield– and that became the inspiration for the songwriting that became Devil May Care .”
Tinsley’s latest effort, Devil May Care is a healthy one-two punch of deft songwriting and Georgia-grown style that cashes in on a lifetime of blues study and practice without feeling dated or worn. In fact, Ellis has never sounded better, and he attributes the notion to those who know him best.
“I would post a demo of the best song I wrote of the week. I called it the ‘Wednesday Basement Tapes’ as sort of an homage to Bob Dylan and The Band! The ‘Wednesday Basement Tapes’ were a way for the fans to weigh in on the songs, and I took their criticism to heart,” says Ellis. “It appeared to me that people wanted me to make an album that had the sound of Capricorn Records in the early ’70s. That’s the kind of album I made.”
Songs like “Right Down The Drain” and “Just Like Rain” certainly bear the hallmarks of Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman, but there’s no mistaking the voodoo magic of Johnny Jenkins’ Ton Ton Macoute on “Juju” or the rock psychedelia of another Jenkins disciple Jimi Hendrix on “28 Days” . Other highlights include the sophistication of “One Less Reason” and the soul-break of “Don’t Bury Our Love” .
“I think that’s one of the differences between this album and the previous albums,” Ellis claims. “I was able to make the most fan-friendly album I could– and you can’t go wrong making albums for your fans! You can go wrong making albums for radio; you can go wrong making albums for critics, but you can never go wrong making an album for your fans.”
For his acoustic tour, Ellis is carrying those songs along with some of his personal favorites from Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and other blues stalwarts– but he’s prepared to venture into more unconventional territory as well.
“I’m also doin’ some really quirky covers,” laughs Ellis. “I’m also getting into Leo Kottke, Jimmy Page open-tuning type songs, a Bob Dylan song, maybe– and whatever the hell I want! A Buddy Holly song!”
Armed with only a 1969 Martin D-35 and a 1937 National Steel resonator, Ellis intends to pay plenty of homage to his Capricorn heroes when he gets to Macon on February 4th.
“I recorded there once when it was in its first incarnation after the label folded, and I really enjoyed recording there. It’s gonna be gas to play some of those songs where they were recorded!”
When the prospect of a straight acoustic blues album is brought up, I can almost hear the grin on Tinsley’s face.
“That’s what I’m workin’ on right now. I’ve gone in the studio with a young, great, talented blues and soul artist here in Atlanta producing me– Eddie 9V. He and his brother did twelve songs on me and we’re gonna add some more songs to it and I’m gonna have an album of acoustic music that will be made by an old blues rocker with the help of a couple o’ guys with some young ears.”
Tinsley Ellis performs LIVE at Capricorn Sound Studios Saturday, February, 4th! Doors open at 6pm for the first show & doors at 8pm for the second show !

Atlanta-based blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter Tinsley Ellis’s first solo acoustic album, Naked Truth , is both a departure and an arrival. Ellis has been recording and traveling the world for more than four decades, delivering his feral, guitar-fueled, electric blues-rock to ever-growing audiences at concert halls, festivals, and clubs. Naked Truth , though, is steeped in the folk blues traditions of Muddy Waters, Skip James, Son House, Robert Johnson, and Leo Kottke. Ellis swaps his blistering, guitar-fueled, full-band workouts for equally passionate, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. His famed guitar chops and musical creativity are on full display throughout the album’s 12 songs, which include nine new originals.
