Queen + Adam Lambert Announce 2023 North American ‘Rhapsody’ Tour Dates

Queen + Adam Lambert are bringing their Rhapsody Tour back to North America for their first shows on this side of the Atlantic since 2019. The tour kicks off Oct. 4 in Baltimore, Maryland, and wraps up Nov. 11 in Los Angeles, California.

“This tour has lots of new bells and lots of new whistles,” Queen guitarist Brian May tells Rolling Stone . “We’ve evolved as performers, I think. We’ve stepped up our game. We have better chemistry than ever. We understand each other better than ever, and we feel more free in the way that we interpret stuff. We’re very happy with it. There’s lots of new production and stuff we want to excite you with.”

The set will focus on Queen classics like “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Somebody to Love,” and “Radio Ga Ga.” But they sprinkled in deep cuts like “Tear It Up” and “A King of Magic” in Europe last year, and hope to keep doing that.

“This show has evolved since its been in America since we’ve taken it around the world,” adds drummer Roger Taylor. “It’s quite a different show in a way, while retaining all the big hits, which so many people want to hear.”

Ticket sales begin Friday, March 31. In an effort to keep prices low and reduce scalping, the band is going to utilize the Ticketmaster Face Value Exchange, which makes it impossible to sell tickets for more than face value. “It’s an experiment,” says May. “We got sick of seeing our fans get ripped off by scalpers. We’re hoping this works out.”

Queen + Adam Lambert first played together on the 2009 finale of American Idol. They began gigging together in 2012, and have stayed on the road consistently over the past decade. Filling in for Freddie Mercury was a daunting task at first for Lambert, but he’s grown very comfortable with the job over the years.

“I feel less anxiety now,” he says. “I’ve matured as a performer. I trust myself a bit more. I will say that when the movie [ Bohemian Rhapsody ] came out, we had all these new fans, and many of them were young, I felt this little pang of, ‘Oh, these are new fans that haven’t been to a show yet.’ I needed to prove myself again, which is good. It keeps me on my game.”

The 2018 movie was an enormous success that grossed $911 million and won four Academy Awards, including Best Actor for star Rami Malek. It ends at Live Aid in 1985, and there’s been scattered talk over the past few years of a sequel that would chronicle Mercury’s final years.

“We need a script,” says May. “That’s what it comes down to. It took us 12 years to get the script for Bohemian Rhapsody , and get the right team in place. I’m not anxious. I think if the right thing comes along, it might work. We have our wonderful producer, Graham King, on it. It’s a possibility. If the right planets align, it might happen.”

“He would be welcome,” adds Taylor. “But I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

At the moment, this next leg of the Rhapsody Tour is just 14 shows, but it’s very possible they’ll tack on more. “People are buying tickets,” says Lambert. “And hey, we like performing.”

Having first launched their universally acclaimed Rhapsody Tour with 25 epic shows across North America in 2019, Queen + Adam Lambert are bringing their highly acclaimed production, now expanded and updated, back to where it first began. Queen + Adam Lambert’s 150-minute career-spanning set list celebrates the band’s extraordinary back catalogue, lining up wall-to-wall immortal anthems like “We Will Rock You”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Radio Ga Ga”, and “Somebody To Love” alongside classic deep cuts and vintage fan favourites. Featuring a dazzling state-of-the-art stage design, incredible special effects and set pieces, this sense-swamping extravaganza has been blowing critics and fans away the world over.

Queen + Adam Lambert appreciate that it is an enormous task to try and stop scalpers from taking advantage of fans wanting to purchase tickets for the tour. In an effort to help minimize resale and keep ticket prices at face value for fans, the band are collaborating with the venues’ ticketing partners to restrict the ability to transfer tickets for The Rhapsody Tour so that they may only be transferred between fans at the original price. 

Fans will still have protection against unforeseen circumstances. Those who purchase tickets and are no longer able to attend their show will be able to sell their tickets at the price they paid using a face value ticket exchange, including the Ticketmaster Face Value Exchange – which is free to use for buyers and sellers. Unfortunately, the states of NY, IL, and CO have laws in place which protect ticket scalpers – these laws prohibit artists from being able to restrict the transfer of their tickets to face value exchanges only. “These are kind of new glory days for us,” said Queen guitarist and founding member Brian May, who was literally knighted by King Charles III earlier this month. “It’s nice to think that hopefully there will be the demand for that.” 

But the guitarist, along with founding drummer Roger Taylor and singer Adam Lambert , was on the other side of the Atlantic in Thursday, in New York to announce the group’s 14-show North American leg of its “Rhapsody” tour — its first since 2019 — which runs from Oct. 4 through Nov. 11.

Shows on the overseas “Rhapsody” tour dates featured around 25 songs plus four encore numbers, and included the hits “Killer Queen,” “Fat Bottomed Girls, “Another One Bites the Dust, “We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions” and the song with more than 2 billion Spotify streams that lent its title to a film and this tour, “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Queen promises some deeper cuts on this jaunt. Lambert says, “I’m not sure exactly what we’ll pull out for this one. Look, I would be happy just to show up and do what I was told if that was how it was. But I’ve been really fortunate to work with these two gentlemen who are very collaborative, and we get to all throw ideas in and work things out. I’m really grateful for that it makes me even more invested in it.

It’s been a decade since the group’s first live American concert, though the first time they performed was in 2009 when May and Taylor were guests on the eighth season of “Idol.” May remembers the first actual American concert in Las Vegas in 2013 for the iHeart Music Festival: “It felt so good both internally and from the [crowd] reaction that we thought, ‘My God, this is something we shouldn’t be letting go.’ I think we foresaw some kind of future, didn’t we? But not quite as big as it actually happened. It’s been colossal.” 

Lambert agreed, “I don’t think I would have imagined that it would have been the gift that keeps on giving.”

The current Rhapsody tour features Queen + Adam Lambert’s regular band members, longtime keyboard player and musical director Spike Edney, bass guitarist Neil Fairclough and percussionist Tyler Warren. Founding bassist John Deacon left the band and effectively retired from music following Freddie Mercury’s 1991 death, and chose not to be present at Queen’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

Despite a 30-year-plus age difference between Lambert, 41, and May, 75 and Taylor, 73, the three have an easy camaraderie that’s evident both onstage and off. Lambert was only three when Queen’s iconic 1985 Live Aid performance rocked the world, but it was something he got to recreate at the Fire Fight fundraiser concert in Sydney, Australia in February 2020, a month before Covid shut down the world.

 As a fan growing up, Lambert was familiar with Queen’s Live Aid footage. “But when it came time to first join the band on stage, I was like, ‘I have to know my stuff’ so I watched as much as I could. Besides Live Aid, one of my favorite things was Montreal concert where Freddie was running around in a pair of itty bitty white shorts and no shoes,” Lambert says. “I just I remember seeing that and going ‘This guy’s amazing.’ He was so free and ridiculous and just full of joy and I’ve been so inspired by that spirit. I try to approach shows with that same humor…”

“And shorts?” Taylor quipped.

“Not the shorts for me — Freddie had much better legs,” Lambert concluded.

A general on sale date for the Queen + Adam Lambert  U.S. tour is March 31, and in light of exorbitant ticket prices and “dynamic pricing,” the band stated in a release that “In an effort to help minimize resale and keep ticket prices at face value for fans, the band are collaborating with the venues’ ticketing partners to restrict the ability to transfer tickets for the Rhapsody tour so that they may only be transferred between fans at the original price.”

Queen + Adam Lambert Announce ‘The Rhapsody Tour’ Fall 2023 North American Dates

Queen + Adam Lambert are back to rock North America one more time, announcing fall North American dates for "The Rhapsody Tour."

The trek is set to launch Oct. 4 in Baltimore, Maryland and will hit stops in the U.S. and Canada through a Nov. 11 finale in Los Angeles. See all of the dates, cities and venues listed toward the bottom of the page.

For fans wondering, Queen view the show as an evolution of the performances that they were putting on prior to the pandemic. "We were changing it and improving it as we went, and we are now going through all of those improvements again when it comes to this American leg," says drummer Roger Taylor to Billboard .

When asked about the changes to the set and production, guitarist Brian May was coy, explaining, "Well, we’re not gonna tell you that much, we don’t want to spoil it. [laughs] But the nice things is that the material is what ultimately gives the ideas, and we’re able to develop those ideas as we go along. We get to throw more and more stuff in, production-wise."

Lambert chimed in, "I will say, the technology has come so far, even in the 10 years that we’ve worked together. It gives us so much freedom when it comes to what we want to create, what environment we want to put around a song. We have all of these toys that we get to play with, which we all get a big kick out of. We have an amazing creative team that work with us — I mean, we add something in a couple of days if we have a cool idea. Once the show kicks off, the show is never locked. It’s never the same show every night, we have the ability to throw a new song in, move the set around, change the visuals. There’s so much freedom."

As for whether or not this is the band's final run, May commented, "Let me be clear, this is not a farewell tour. You can always do one more time … and then one more time … and then another time after that!"

Tickets for "The Rhapsody Tour" will go on sale next Friday (March 31) at 10AM local time via Live Nation .

Queen Kicks Off 2023 US ‘Rhapsody’ Tour: Photos, Set List, Videos

Queen + Adam Lambert kicked off the 2023 leg of their Rhapsody tour Wednesday night at the CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore.

After opening with "Radio Ga Ga" from 1984's The Works , guitarist Brian May , drummer Roger Taylor and singer Lambert delivered a career-spanning 25-song set that featured a couple of new twists. They tore through the Sheer Heart Attack rocker "Stone Cold Crazy" for the first time since 2018 and performed "Is This the World We Created ... ?," also from The Works , for the first time with Lambert.

The show also featured a parade of the band's most famous songs, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You," "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love."

The fall leg of the Rhapsody tour is scheduled to conclude on Nov. 12 at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

Sir Brian May, Roger Taylor and their exceptional frontman Adam Lambert are returning for a further spectacular North American run of sold out shows which gets underway next week with its opening show Wednesday October 4 in Baltimore.

Promising an “even more ambitious show”, the band’s 23-date US tour begins October 4 with the first of two shows at Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena continuing throughout North America including stops in Toronto, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Denver and further cities before closing out with a pair of dates at Los Angeles’s BMO Stadium November 11 and 12. In addition, the band will perform a special one-off headliner on October 21 at the Formula 1 Lenovo U.S. Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas, Austin, Texas.

It has been over a year since the band last toured their acclaimed “Rhapsody Tour,” which was highlighted across the world in royal fashion Saturday June 4, 2022 with a special performance in front of London’s Buckingham Palace as the opener for the Platinum Jubilee concert celebrating the late H.M. Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign, providing an altogether magnificent opener for its UK & European run of sold-out dates which saw the band play the Rhapsody tour across the UK and 11 countries throughout Europe, in all playing a total of 36 concerts.

The 2023 North American tour will see Queen + Adam Lambert supported on stage by their regular band members, long-serving Queen keyboard player Spike Edney, bass guitarist Neil Fairclough and percussionist Tyler Warren.

Queen + Adam Lambert Begin North American Rhapsody Tour

Queen + Adam Lambert began their highly acclaimed Rhapsody Tour of North America on Wednesday (October 4, 2023). The concert, at the CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, Md., featured Brian May, Roger Taylor and their frontman Adam Lambert in an expanded and updated production, with 27 songs presented in five acts plus encore. Tickets for the 23-date tour, which continues through Nov. 12, are available here .

When the Live Nation-produced tour was announced, the newly knighted May said, “Our last tour featured our most ambitious production ever. So we decided to rip it apart and get even more ambitious. Watch out world.”

As with last year’s U.K. and European dates, the 2023 North American tour see Queen + Adam Lambert supported on stage by their regular band members, long-serving Queen keyboard player and musical director Spike Edney, bass guitarist Neil Fairclough and percussionist Tyler Warren.

The production features a dazzling state-of-the-art stage design, incredible special effects and set pieces.

Midway through Act 4, Lambert and Taylor performed co-lead vocals on “Under Pressure.”

Freddie’s performance with Queen at Wembley in 1986 kicked off the evening’s encores, and continued as the band played “We Will Rock You.”

Event Information

Due to overwhelming fan demand, Queen + Adam Lambert announced the addition of the final eight new dates across North America on their upcoming Rhapsody Tour, which first launched in 2019 with 25 critically acclaimed shows. The tour will now include a second show in Boston at TD Garden on October 16, 2023. Tickets for the newly added shows will be available via a general onsale beginning Friday, April 7 at 10AM local time at Ticketmaster.com.

After a 4-year long hiatus, Sir Brian May, Roger Taylor and their exceptional frontman Adam Lambert are bringing their highly acclaimed production, now expanded and better-than-ever, back to where it first began. Produced by Live Nation, the now 22-date tour kicks off on October 4 at Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena, with stops across North America before concluding with back-to-back shows at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. Take I-55 North to the Damen exit and make a left, going northbound for approximately 7 minutes. The building will be on your right.

Take Madison Street west from the Loop.

Take I-290 East to exit 28A (Damen Avenue). Take Damen Avenue north to Madison Street. Make a right onto Madison Street and the building will be on your right.

Public Transportation

Take the Orange, Green, Purple, or Brown lines to Madison. Take #20 Madison buses west.

To the United Center : The #19 United Center Express Bus runs on game days. Service begins 90 minutes prior to game time, runs every 10 minutes until 30 minutes until start of game. Board at stops starting southbound on Michigan and Randolph. Connections are made with Metra trains at Millennium Station, Ogilvie Center and Union Station. The #20 Madison Bus travels west on Madison Street, starting downtown at Wabash Street and runs every few minutes, making all stops to the United Center.

From the United Center : The #19 United Center Express and the #20 Madison buses run every few minutes, departing from the eastbound side of Madison Street. Buses make all stops.

Suites Parking

Two reserved parking passes will be valid in lots C and K. The other two reserved parking passes will be for parking in lots A, B, D, or L. Holders of these passes will be directed to A, B, D, or L lots by traffic police and parking attendants based on traffic conditions. Parking passes are good for one space each. All parking passes are mobile entry only.

For all special events, each Executive Suite Holder will receive two complimentary parking passes per event ordered. These two passes will be for reserved parking located in lots C and K. In addition, Executive Suite Holders will also receive the option to purchase four additional parking passes in lots C and K for special events.

Suite Holder parking passes are also valid for buses or limousines under specific guidelines.

Lexus Club Parking

Lexus Club Seat members have reserved parking in fenced, well-lit and clearly marked parking lots adjacent to the United Center for all Blackhawks or Bulls preseason, regular season and playoff games. All Lexus Club members who purchase tickets to other events may also purchase one preferred parking pass (in lot C or K) for such events. Details on how to obtain parking for other events are included with the fax transmission announcing each event.

Lexus Club Seat members with two to four tickets receive a complimentary, reserved parking space in a closed-in, paved lot for all Blackhawks or Bulls preseason, regular season and playoff games. Lexus Club Seat members with five seats or more will be provided with two parking passes.

UBER ZONE FAQs:

What is the Uber Zone (Lot E) at the United Center? To increase and streamline the fan experience for guests who take Uber to and from the United Center, the new Uber Zone is located at the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street (Lot E) and will combine the three former Uber locations around the arena. Traffic leading to the three prior Uber pickup locations 1) Zone A, previously located on Wood Street & Washington Blvd. near Lot A, 2) Zone D, previously located on Monroe Street & S. Paulina Street near Lot D and 3) Zone F, previously located on Monroe Street & Seeley Ave. near Lot F will now be directed towards the one new Uber Zone in Lot E.

What is the location of the Uber Zone? The new Uber Zone at the United Center is located on the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street. Fans will enter and exit through the sidewalk entrance located on Madison Street and cars will enter the lot by turning into the Uber Zone from Madison Street. Cars will exit on Warren Blvd.

What are the hours of operation? On event days, the Uber Zone is open two hours prior to games, concerts and events and will remain open up to one hour after each event. On non-event days, the Uber Zone will be closed and Uber rides will be dropped off near the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street outside of the Uber Zone.

What is the pickup process for fans?

• Using the Uber app, fans inside the United Center will call an Uber ride.
• Guests will then head to the new Uber Zone located at the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street in front of the United Center.
• When arriving, fans will show the Uber attendant the lane number their driver is in.
• Fans will be shown the location where their Uber vehicle is located to start their next journey.

What is the dropoff process for fans? When Uber drivers arrive with guests at the United Center, they will be instructed to pull into the Uber Zone from the Madison Street side to drop off fans. Once exiting the vehicle, guests will walk out of the main entrance located on the corner of Madison Street and Wood Street. Guests can cross the street to the United Center and are encouraged to enter through the East Atrium.

If a bag is necessary, the following restrictions and processes apply:

• Backpacks of any size are considered prohibited items and are NOT allowed into the arena.
• Bags that measure larger than 12”x12”x6” are prohibited and are NOT allowed into the arena.
• Bags that measure between 6”x4”x1.5” and 12”x 12”x6” (including clear bags and Nashville Locker Room bags) are subject to x-ray screening and visual inspection. 
• Bags that measure smaller than 6” x 4” x 1.5” may proceed through express screening lanes for visual inspection.  
• Diaper bags and bags needed for medical reasons are allowed but will be subject to x-ray screening.

QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT appreciate that it is an enormous task to try and stop scalpers from taking advantage of fans wanting to purchase tickets for the tour. In an effort to help minimize resale and keep ticket prices at face value for fans, the band are collaborating with the venues' ticketing partners to restrict the ability to transfer tickets for the "Rhapsody" tour so that they may only be transferred between fans at the original price.

Fans will still have protection against unforeseen circumstances. Those who purchase tickets and are no longer able to attend their show will be able to sell their tickets at the price they paid using a face value ticket exchange, including the Ticketmaster Face Value Exchange — which is free to use for buyers and sellers.

Unfortunately, the states of New York, Illinois and Colorado have laws in place that protect ticket scalpers. These laws prohibit artists from being able to restrict the transfer of their tickets to face-value exchanges only. For shows in these states, QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT strongly encourages fans to only buy or sell tickets to one another on face-value exchanges.

Adam Lambert Says Freddie Mercury Is in His Heart 'Every Time I Take the Stage' as He and Queen Close Out 2023 Tour

Adam Lambert  made sure to keep the legacy of late Queen  frontman, Freddie Mercury , alive as he and original band members Brian May  and  Roger Taylor  closed out their North American tour.

Over the weekend, Lambert, May and Taylor played the final two shows of their 2023 Rhapsody Tour at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. The shows marked the end of Queen's 22-show North American Tour — their first tour in four years — which kicked off in October in Baltimore.

While addressing the crowd during Saturday's show, Lambert, 41, spoke about how fortunate he was to tour with the rock legends over the past 10 years. He also made sure to pay tribute to Mercury, who died at age 45 in 1991.

"L.A., what's up?" Lambert greeted the crowd. "It's so good to be home here after an amazing tour with two rock and roll legends. You know that I've been on the road for 10 years with Queen? Isn’t that nuts?"

"Just know that every time I get up here, I know that I’m f---ing lucky," Lambert continued. "I know how much of an honor this is. And be assured that every time I take the stage, I have one person in my heart: Freddie Mercury!"

As the crowd went wild, Lambert continued on. "You love Freddie too, right? That’s what this is, this is a celebration of Freddie and Queen," he said before breaking into Queen's hit, "Don't Stop Me Now."

Later during the show — which featured 150 minutes of hits that spanned Queen's decades-long career, including classics like "We Will Rock You," "Radio Ga Ga" and "Somebody to Love" — May, 76, honored his late bandmate in his own moment onstage.

Singing their acoustic song "Love of My Life," May sat on a stool and performed for the crowd before a clip of Mercury singing the same song appeared on the screen above the stage. At the end of the performance, May reached out to his left — the same direction where the clip of Mercury was positioned on the screen — making it appear as if the two were on stage together.

Though Lambert is assuming the lead singer role that Mercury once had, the American Idol alum and his bandmates have previously made it clear that he's not trying to be the late iconic singer.

"He doesn't try to be Freddie, which is wonderful," May told PEOPLE in March . "He always pays tribute to Freddie, which we love. We all do. Freddie's with us, but Adam interprets, he finds new ways to go and we are very much a team now. We discuss everything, we build, we rebuild and it's fun."

Lambert agreed, calling his partnership with May and Taylor, 74, a "team effort," and acknowledging that Mercury "laid the groundwork" for all that they've accomplished together.

"He's the originator. He can't be replaced, but it gives me so much freedom to just exist in a playful, kind of silly place," he said. "Freddie had a great sense of humor, from what I hear and what I've seen, and he was sort of limitless."

While it's been 10 years since they first started touring together, May said he still finds it unbelievable that he gets to tour with Taylor and perform their Queen hits with the help of Lambert.

"The amazing thing is we didn't look for Adam. I often think, 'My God, how did this happen?' He is kind of a gift from God," he told PEOPLE in March. "Roger and I, after we lost Freddie, said 'OK, this is the end of it.' We knew consciously, 'No, we're not going to this anymore.'"

"He just appeared," May continued of Lambert. "The voice is extraordinary. There is no other voice in the universe like his voice. Plus he has all the other stuff, I mean, look at the guy. He's born to wear diamonds."

With the North American portion of their tour now complete, Queen and Lambert have a few months off before heading to Japan in 2024 for a five-show run, kicking off Feb. 4.

"It's just a privilege to be able to do this at the top level that we are," May told PEOPLE in March. "How wonderful. How could you possibly ask for more? I think we're very happy doing it. I'm probably going to do it 'til I drop."

Stage 17: Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc - Courchevel, 166 km

The queen high mountain stage of the 2023 Tour de France features 5000 meters of elevation gain and four very tough climbs during the 166 km stage: Col des Saisles (13.3 km at 5.3%), Cornet de Roselend (19.9 km at 6%, Cöte de Longefoy (6.6 km at 7.6%) and the terrible final climb to the Col de la Loze (28.4 km at 6%). The summit will be reached 6.5 km from the finish in Courchevel, which will be reached after a fast descent.

Vuelta a Espana - September 8

Stage 13: Formigal - Col du Tourmalet, 134.7 km

The queen stage was one of the most rumored and it turned out to be exactly as expected, as the race heads into the Pyrenees, with a mammoth mountain stage. Not because of its size, as it stretches over just 134 kilometers, but because of its constant climbs and descents. The riders will climb the Col d'Aubisque and the Col de Spandelles, which are separately very tough climbs, before the summit finish on the Col du Tourmalet, above 2000 meters.

Tour de France 2023 route announcement – Everything you need to know

Mountainous profile, only 22km of time trialling and four summit finishes - all the details of the 110th Grande Boucle

There were gasps from the audience in the Palais des Congrès in Paris when the men’s 2023 Tour de France route was unveiled and the severity of the course was confirmed.

The 110th edition of cycling’s biggest race includes just a single 22km hilly time trial in the Alps and mountain stages in all five of France’s mountain ranges on the road between the Grand Départ in the Basque Country and the finish in Paris.

Race director Christian Prudhomme openly admitted that the 2023 Tour route was for the climbers as he revealed the multiple mountain top finishes and steep roads.

The very limited amount of time trialling and preponderance of mountains no doubt pleased French riders Thibaut Pinot , David Gaudu and Romain Bardet. However, Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglič and Geraint Thomas are more likely to target the Giro d’Italia, which has three times the amount of time trialling and arguably fewer mountains.

2023 Tour de France to start in the Basque Country

Official information from race organiser ASO claimed the 3,404km route includes eight flat stages for the sprinters, four hilly stages suited to breakaways and eight mountain stages. Four of these include summit finishes: in the Pyrenees at Cauterets-Cambasque, on the legendary Puy de Dôme volcano in the Massif Central, on the Grand Colombier in the Jura and at Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc in the Alps.

The other mountain stages are also extremely difficult, even if some are short and so extra intense.

Stage 14 to Morzine includes the mighty Col de Joux Plane and its testing descent to the finish. Stage 15 ends with the 11% ‘wall’ of Côte des Amerands and then the 7km 7.7% climb up to Saint-Gervais in view of Mont-Blanc.

Stage 17 to Courchevel climbs the 2,304m-high Col de la Loze and then descends to finish on the altiport runway. Stage 20 is a final brutal multi-mountain stage in the Vosges between Belfort and Le Markstein ski resort.

The only time trial is on stage 16 in the Arve valley near Sallanches after the second rest day, but the 22km route between Passy and Combloux will test riders' bike handling skills and climbing as much as their time trialling. The stage includes the Côte de Domancy, where Bernard Hinault forged his 1980 Worlds victory, and which also featured as part of the final week time trial in the 2016 Tour.

There is no final weekend time trial before Paris and no team time trial around Tarbes in the first week, as was rumoured before the route was unveiled.

2022 Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard was not present at the route presentation but he no doubt liked what he saw during the final days of his holidays. He was arguably the best climber of the last two editions of the Tour and he appears to have plenty of opportunities to go on the attack on the steep ascents in 2023.

Two-time winner Tadej Pogačar was at the Palais des Congrès in Paris and he smiled as the route was unveiled, relishing next July’s challenge against Vingegaard, Jumbo-Visma, Ineos Grenadiers and anyone else.

2021 green jersey winner Mark Cavendish was not as happy. He has a number of opportunities to set a new record of 35 Tour de France stage victories but like all the fastmen, he will have to suffer through the mountains to make it to Paris for the final sprint.

Week one: From the Basque Country to the Puy du Dome

The 2023 Tour begins in the Basque Country, 31 years on from the 1992 Grand Départ in San Sebastian, when Miguel Indurain claimed the prologue time trial ahead of what would be the second of his five overall victories.

The three road stages will be a celebration of the Basque Country’s love of cycling, with huge crowds expected for the team presentation outside the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao.

There is no early time trial this year, and the Tour begins with a 182km road stage around Bilbao. The route heads out to the hilly Bay of Biscay coastline before returning to the city for a late, steep climb of the 10% Pike Bidea and the finish in the centre. The stage includes 3,300m of climbing and so Wout van Aert and an on-form Peter Sagan rather than the pure sprinters could be the favourites to win and take the first yellow jersey – as, indeed, could Julian Alaphilippe.

Stage 2 features more punchy terrain on a 209km route from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Donostia San Sebastián, with the Jaizkibel climb – well known from the Donostia San Sebastián Klasikoa – only 20km from the finish.

Stage 3 will start in Amorebieta-Etxano and heads 80km along the Basque Country coastline before reaching the French border. The 185km stage ends in Bayonne with the sprinters finally getting a clear chance of victory. The day after offers a chance of revenge for the defeated, with another fast finish expected on the Nogaro motor racing circuit.

The mountains begin on stage 5 with a 165km ride through the Pyrenees from Pau to Laruns with the Col de Soudet and Col de Marie Blanque featuring ahead of the run-in to the finish.

The race continues in the Pyrenees on stage 6 from Tarbes to Cauterets Cambasque. Rafał Majka was the last winner in Cauterets in 2015, after he distanced his breakaway companions on the Col du Tourmalet.

The stage climbs the Col d’Aspin and the 2115m-high Col du Tourmalet before a long descent to the valley and the 16km climb up to the finish. The average gradient is only 5.4% but the final three kilometres are over 10%.

Stage 7 takes the Tour away from the Pyrenees to Bordeaux with a start in Mont-de-Marsan, the adopted hometown of 1973 Tour winner Luis Ocaña. Bordeaux hasn't hosted a Tour stage finish since Cavendish won in 2010 and the pan-flat profile will surely offer him and others a chance of another sprint win.

The 201km stage 8 ride from Liborne to Limoges is a transition stage towards the Massif Central and is another sprint opportunity before the mountains return on stage 9 with the finish on the Puy de Dôme. The climb up and around the dormant volcano hasn't been used since 1988 but has a special place in Tour de France history, including the Poulidor-Anquetil duel in 1964 and the drama of when a spectator punched Eddy Merckx in 1975 to try to stop him winning yet again. The Puy de Dôme climb is 13.3km long at an average of 7.7% but the final four kilometres are above 11%.

Week two: Towards the high Alps for the single time trial

The riders enjoy a well-deserved first rest day in Clermont Ferrand before a hilly 167km stage between the Vulcania volcano park and Issoire. Stage 11 heads east from Clermont Ferrand to Moulins for another sprint finish if the peloton can control the breakaways.

It will be a similar scenario on stage 12 from Roanne to Belleville-en-Beaujolais, with little time for wine tasting along the route and a hilly finale perhaps playing a major role in the fight for the green jersey.

The mountains return on stage 13 in the Ain region and then just keep coming. The first is a short but intense 138km ride from Chatillon-sur-Charlaronne to the Grand Colombier summit finish. A stage first finished here in 2020 when Pogačar duelled with Roglič.

The riders climb up to the Hauteville-Lompnes plateau and then descend to face the 17.4km haul up to the Grand Colombier finish at an average gradient of 7.1%. A French winner would be fitting on Bastille Day.

The high mountains continue on stage 14 and into the second weekend, with 4,200 metres of climbing in just 152km between Annemasse and Morzine. The day includes six climbs, including the nasty Col de la Ramaz before the Col du Joux Plane. The descent off the mountain to Morzine will also be important and surely only increase any time gap achieved at the summit.

A demanding weekend ends with stage 15 from Les Gets to Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc, which should inspire a GC battle. The ride through the Haute-Savoie includes the Col de la Forclaz, the Croix Fry and the Col des Aravis. The climb to the finish kicks off with the 11% Côte des Amerands wall and then the 7km climb up to Saint-Gervais gets steeper and steeper, with ASO suggesting some sections touch 17%.

Week three:  The only time trial and more mountains before Paris 

The riders will enjoy the second rest in Sallanches but will be full of dread for what they face in the final week.

The only time trial of the Tour is on stage 16 and covers just 22km in the Arve valley south of Sallanches. It will be a chance to recover for the domestiques and sprinters but a huge day for the overall contenders.

The time trial starts in Passy on the north side of the Arve valley and then crosses to the south to climb the Côte de Domancy and up to the finish in the village of Combloux.

The climb is only three kilometres long but has an average gradient of 8.5% and a section at 16%. Some riders might be tempted to switch from a time trial bike to a climbing bike, but the time benefit is probably not worth the risks involved.

Time gaps might not be huge, but the stage will shake-up the overall classification and set the narrative for the final week.

The high mountains continue on stage 17 from Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc to Courchevel. The 166km stage includes three categorised Alpine passes and it tackles the Col de la Loze before a short descent to Courchevel. The climbing isn’t quite over, however, with an 18% ramp up to the finish line at the altiport runway.

It is arguably the queen stage of the 2023 Tour de France, with the 2,304m climb up the Col de la Loze the highest point of the whole race. The Loze was only climbed once before at the Tour, in 2020, after the narrow bike path to the summit was asphalted. On that occasion, Roglič distanced Pogačar, with Miguel Ángel López winning the stage. We can expect a similar showdown next July.

The Tour leaves the Alps on stage 18 from Moutiers to Bourg-en-Bresse, giving a breakaway a chance of glory if they can break the will of the sprinters and their teams. Stage 19 from Moirans-en-Montagne to Poligny is a hillier transition stage through the Jura and so north towards the Vosges and the French-Swiss border.

There is no time trial on the final Saturday of the race, and instead ASO have created what L’Équipe has described as a Liège-Bastogne-Liège as they try to inspire aggressive racing without climbing high into the mountains.

The 133km leg runs through the Vosges between Belfort and Le Markstein ski resort. It starts with the Ballon d’Alsace, includes five mid-stage climbs and then ends with 8.1% Petit Ballon and then the 8.4% Col du Platzerwasel.

“On a constant climb the riders can calculate their watts and control their effort. We are looking for ways to blow up the peloton,” technical director Thierry Gouvenou told L’Équipe , explaining his decision to create such a hard final stage.

Le Markstein hosted the penultimate stage of the 2022 Tour de France Femmes, with Annemiek van Vleuten taking the yellow jersey with an attack. The men will be hoping to repeat her exploit next summer to seal overall victory.

The Tour peloton will then transfer from the Vosges to Paris on the morning of the final stage on July 23. The final 115km parade stage starts at the national velodrome of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, which will host the track racing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
