Tour de France: Michael Woods wins stage 9 atop Puy de Dôme as Pogacar gains time

UAE Team Emirates leader surges on mythical ascent to pull back valuable time on Jonas Vingegaard in battle for yellow

How it unfolded

Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) seized a heartwrenching victory on the Puy de Dôme on stage 9 of the Tour de France , chasing down Matteo Jorgensen (Movistar) in the final 400m of the summit finish after a 50km solo attack - while in the GC competition, Tadej Pogačar gained eight seconds on overall race leader Jonas Vingegaard .

Michael Woods was part of the original 14-man break which broke clear only a few kilometres into the stage, but spent the majority of the day in the main chasing group behind a series of successive splinter breakaways that seemed certain to take the stage victory.

Jorgenson, by contrast, attacked solo 50km from the finish, despite suffering an insect sting in the latter part of the race, and managed to ride clear of the aggressive breakaway group in a brave long solo move.

However, the summit finish of the Puy de Dôme was just a few hundred metres too long for the Movistar rider, and Woods was followed by Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) in second place, while Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious) also snuck onto the podium just ahead of Jorgenson - overtaking him within the final 50m of the savagely steep final gradients.

Amongst the main contenders, more than 10 minutes behind the stage winners, the real battle for the Tour de France was underway while Woods’ was deep in celebration. Some 1.4km from the finish, Pogačar made a powerful attack distancing all the GC contenders, with only Vingegaard managing to keep touch with the Slovenian.

With 500m to go, Pogačar kicked a second time and managed to establish a gap over the yellow jersey, which he maintained on the 14% inclines of the final few hundred metres - finishing the stage eight seconds ahead of Vingegaard.

The impressive defensive effort from the Dane was enough to defend his yellow jersey but saw him lose vital seconds in his narrow 25-second lead over Pogačar at the start of the stage.

Behind them, Jai Hindley found himself unable to keep pace with the main GC contenders and slipped off the pace of the Yates brothers, Tom Pidcock and Carlos Rodríguez - retaining his third place but now nearly three minutes off the yellow jersey.

Behind them, Thibaut Pinot and Romain Bardet finished together but both saw further drops in their GC standings.

“I’m still having a pinch myself moment,” Michael Woods said after the race finished. “I can’t believe I did it. I’m really proud of myself, I’m really proud of my team. It’s really special.”

I had a lot of time to think, a lot of time to suffer, and just looking up the road and trying to make time back on Jorgenson.

“I’m 36 years old, 37 this year. I’m not getting any younger. I’ve always talked about winning a stage of the Tour de France, and I’ve finally achieved it.”

“I wish I could say it was all planned,” Woods said. “I wanted to be with Jorgenson out front, it was just the way the cards played. It's really challenging when I knew I was probably the most marked man in that group and I ended up not playing my cards super right, but I just had to be patient.

“And then when I got to 4km to go, I didn’t think about winning I was just thinking about doing a time trial to the top. Then however hard I went it didn't matter the result, just I'd be proud of myself and my hardest was able to bring back Jorgenson, so that’s nice.”

Woods paid tribute to the significance of the Puy de Dôme in cycling history, “What an iconic climb, really beautiful,” he said. “I hope we get to return here in years to come.”

Matteo Jorgenson also spoke after the finish about his painful finale. “I ended up getting solo. So from there, I went all in and yeah, in the end, you just have to hope behind they blow up - because a minute at the bottom of that climb wasn't quite enough.”

“The radio didn’t work the whole climb,” Jorgenson revealed. “So the only time got was the moto. And yeah, he was telling me a minute, and 40 seconds and 35… 35 was the last one I got with, I don't know, 1km to go. And I started to feel empty with one km to go and then before I knew it, Mike was there and passing me. And yeah, it was a surprise but there was absolutely nothing I could do.”

The Tour set off from Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat to blazing sunshine and stifling temperatures, surrounded by cycling folklore. Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat was fittingly the hometown of Raymond Poulidor, whose battle with Jacques Anquetil on the Puy de Dôme in 1964 remains a highlight in the history of the Tour de France .

It was far from the only piece of cycling history on today’s route, as the summit finish of the Puy de Dôme has seen legendary winners such as Fausto Coppi, Federico Bahamontes, Felice Gimondi, Luis Ocaña, Lucien Van Impe and Joop Zoetemelk.

Riding out of Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, the neutralisation had barely lifted before attacks began to fly. Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny), perhaps predictably, was one of the early disrupters.

Barely 5km had passed when a blockage in the main peloton allowed a group of around ten riders, including Campanaerts to establish a gap. While the peloton was unhappy with such a large group, and teams such as Lidl-Trek proved particularly sore at missing the move, the breakaway was large enough to push away and establish a gap of around one minute.

The peloton rode on aggressively, with attacks coming from Wout van Aert, Fred Wright, Alaphilippe and Egan Bernal, amongst others, but none were able to bridge across to the lead group or bring the peloton back to it.

The margin remained around one minute for over 20km, with big names continuing to vie for a spot in the break, but eventually, the efforts petered out, and the group of 14 rode clear and expanded their gap to over eight minutes with 140km remaining.

The successful break contained a host of strong riders, including the polka dot jersey, and was comprised of Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious), Clément Berthet (AG2R-Citroën), Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny), Gorka Izaguirre (Movistar), Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech), Guillame Boivan (Israel-Premier Tech), David de a Cruz (Astana Qazaqstan), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan). Jonas Abrhamsen (Uno-X), Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X), Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) and Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies).

Working hard to protect his lead in the climbers’ classification, Nielsen Powless swept up KOM points on Côte de Felletin and Côte de Pontcharraud, as the breakaway’s advantage swelled to just short of 11 minutes within the first 100km.

As the Côte de Pontaumur approached with 56km remaining, with over 12 minutes in hand, Lutsenko began to beat an aggressive tempo at the front of the break as the group became more animated and competitive. Campenaerts and Mohorič seized the opportunity to break clear in pursuit of the summit of Côte de Pontaumur.

In defence of his KOM points, though, Powless brought back the attack to take the final batch of climber’s points before the Puy de Dôme - in so doing he extended his lead in the competition to 40 points.

Despite receiving a notable insect sting to the head, Matteo Jorgenson proved to be the rider who was motivated enough to move clear of the breakaway - he’d soon established a 25-second lead entering the final 40km.

With the gap to the peloton over 13:30, the main GC contenders seemed satisfied to conserve their energy ahead of the battle for the yellow jersey on the slopes of Puy de Dôme.

On the uncategorised Col de la Nugère with 35km remaining, the pace of the breakaway began to sting for some of the riders. The breakaway shed a handful of riders and a chase group of four containing Powless, Mohoric, De La Cruz and Burgaudeau split from the remaining six riders, which included Michael Woods.

The chasing group, fuelled by Mohoroc’s infamously strong solo-riding ability, established a one-minute advantage over the main breakaway group over the next 5km, as Jorgenson moved into clear view only 15 seconds ahead.

Back in the main peloton, the aggressions of the breakaway saw the gap to Jorgenson grow to over 15 minutes, while Jumbo-Visma orchestrated a calm but focused tempo into the final climb.

De La Cruz faced an unfortunate chain drop with 20km remaining, leaving just three chasers pursuing Jorgenson. The Movistar rider hit the base of Puy de Dôme, with 13.3km at 7.7% ahead of him, with a one-minute advantage over the three pursuers. They in turn were 45 seconds ahead of the remnants of the main break.

Powless led the chase to Jorgenson but faced a tactical dilemma as the strongest climber amongst the chasers - eager not to deliver a free ride for Mohoric and Burgaudeau.

Powless delivered back-to-back attacks with 10km remaining but was initially unable to shed Mohoric and Burgaudeau.

Behind them, the pace in the peloton was set alight as the main contenders’ teams battled to deliver their riders to the base of the final climb safely.

The main field arrived at the base of the Puy de Dôme 15 minutes behind Jorgenson, with both Pogacar and Vingegaard conspicuous near the front of the peloton. Their lieutenants set to work to set the stage for the final ascent, as Jumbo-Visma set a pace that saw the back of the peloton shed dozens of riders. Indeed, the pace was so significant that GC contender Ben O’Connor found himself off the pace and pushed out of contention for the general classification.

Meanwhile, Jorgenson stretched out his advantage over Powless and the chasers, as he entered the crowdless final 4km and the most savage section of the climb.

With a little over 3km remaining, though, it was Mohoric who rode clear of the other chasers, as Powless’ form seemed to crack on the summit finish, and he was soon swept up by the second chasing group on the road.

From that group, Michael Woods exploded into pursuit of Mohoric and Jorgenson, and against all odds emerged in a position to take the stage win.

Woods overtook Mohoric in the final 2km, as the Flamme Rouge was virtually in view.

In the main peloton, the GC battle for the yellow jersey began as the climbing pace led to selection left only eight riders including Vingegaard and Pogačar.

Tour de France 2023 Route stage 9: Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat - Puy de Dôme

Tour de France 2023

The list of Tour de France stage winners at the Puy de Dôme is impressive. Fausto Coppi, Federico Bahamontes, Julio Jimenez, Felice Gimondi, Luis Ocana, Joop Zoetemelk. They all won on the flanks of the volcano with the magical aura. Zoetemelk even won twice.

The name of the last stage winner Johnny Weltz might not ring a bell. The Dane participated four times on the Tour de France and reached the summit of a col on one occassion. Which was enough to be added to above list.

The Puy de Dôme was not included in the Tour since 1988. The 13.3 kilometres climb averages 7.7%. The first 5 kilometres go up at around 7% and after an easygoing section the last 4.3 kilometres are the exact opposite. The gradient never falls below 11% in this part of the climb.

So, most climbing is packed together in the finale, but the route to the foot of the finish climb is far from flat either. The first 25 kilometres are slightly undulating before the Côte du Lac de Vassivière offers a gentle way to stretch the legs – 4.4 kilometres at 4%, not enough for a KOM classification, but a perfect launch pad for breakaway riders. The gradients kick up a notch on the subsequent cimbs – Côte de Felletin (2.1 kilometres at 5.2%), Côte de Pontcharraud (1.8 kilometres at 4.6%), Côte de Pontaumur (3.3 kilometres at 5.3%) – before another non-classified uphill begins 42 kilometres before the finish. The Col de la Nugère is actually a prolonged false flat – 9.2 kilometres at 2.8% – and subsequently the riders plunge down a 15 kilometres descent to the base of the Puy de Dôme.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

Betydning for Vingegaard

The 31st edition of the Étape du Tour will take place on 9 July 2023.

The course follows the same route as stage 14 of the 2023 Tour de France, starting in Annemasse and finishing in Morzine. Entries will open on Wednesday 8 November.

The 152km route takes in more than 4,100 metres of elevation gain, including the climbs of col de Saxel, Col de Cou, Col de Feu, Col de la Ramaz and Col de Joux Plane.

L'Etape 2023 - a case of déjà vu?

Etape veterans might notice the finish of the 2023 route looks familiar. That's because the final two climbs, Col de la Ramez and Col de Joux Plane, also featured in the 2016 Etape du Tour.

That's not a reason to skip the 2023 edition though, as the opening 100km take in a number of new climbs.

Col de la Ramez and Joux Plane are well worth a second visit too - with the latter rated as tougher than Alpe d'Huez by Sportive.com publisher Joe.

Here's what Joe had to say about the final two climbs back in 2016:

The third climb of the day is the Col de la Ramaz which sees Etape riders climb 1,014 metres over 15.5km to the 1,619 metres summit. It has an average of 6.1% slope but that doesn't really tell the full story. The initial 6km goes at roughly 5%, followed by one kilometre of flat, before another kilometre at 8% and then two kilometres at a leg sapping 10.4%. After that you have a kilometre at 8.6%, then two kilometres at around 6.5%. The good news is that the final 500 metres of the climb is almost totally flat. For most Etape riders this will be a tough climb in the heat of the day - you will need to take this steadily and ensure that you are drinking plenty of water because if it is a hot day (and it very often is at this time of year) then the Ramaz will take a lot of energy out of you. For an average Etape rider the total climb is probably around 75 minutes and you should not think of this simply as the warm up to the Col de Joux Plane. The scenery is beautiful - plenty of hairpin bends at the start of the climb, followed by Alpine pastures and then the snow tunnels on the upper reaches. The surface will have been replaced for the Tour, removing one of the main complaints about the ride currently.

Off the top of the Ramaz (we think there will be a feed station at the top but it is possible ASO will decide there is not enough space for anything other than a water station) there is a nice long descent of 16km with a vertical drop of 960 metres. At the top it is a quite narrow road and you will need to be careful if you are surrounded by other riders; fortunately by this stage of an Etape the groups have usually sorted themselves out and you should be riding with people roughly the same speed as you. Towards the bottom of the descent as you get nearer Taninges the road gets wider and it should be a rapid and enjoyable ride. The town itself is not unpretty - it has Roman origins - and we expect there to be a feed station somewhere on the outskirts of the 3,000 population location.

From Taninges there is then a 13km drag along to Samoëns. We imagine you will be routed along the D907, which is mildly uphill (just 78 metres ascent over 13km) but will probably feel like somewhat hard work in the midday sun. You will ideally want to get yourself into a group on this section.

Samoëns is a pretty town, famed for its stonemasonry which were supplied by the numerous limestone quarries in the area. The town is dominated by a pretty (traffic free) square with a huge lime tree and nearby is an Alpine botanical garden. If you want to get your family to come and support you then Samoëns would be an excellent base, especially as it has a reputation for excellent Savoyard food.

COL DE JOUX PLANE

To be totally honest, we were quite surprised to see this stage chosen because of the toughness of the Col de Joux Plane. At 11.6km long with an average slope of 8.5% it is unrelenting. And at the end of a long ride it will be challenging for even the most race fit rider. If you haven't trained enough this will be a climb that finds you out. It starts with about 750 metres at 8.5%, followed by a 12% ramp for 300 metres, followed by a short section at 5% and then two kilometres at 8.5%. A short 'break' of 500 metres at 5% allows a little recovery but then you have 2km at 7%, 600 metres at 10.8% and then follows the last 5km at an average of just over 9% along exposed slopes with absolutely no shelter. Most people who have ridden this will admit that while it is not one of the 'iconic' climbs, the Joux Plane is one of the toughest in the northern Alps. Pantani ascended this climb in 33 minutes - if you manage to do this in double that time then 'chapeau' to you! Personally I rate this as a harder climb than Alpe d'Huez.

From the Ranfolly down to Morzine it should be pure joy and relief but you do need to be wary. The 11km descent is at an average of 6.5% with a maximum slope of 11.1% and while it is steep and technical at the top it is also fun. However when you are tired after a long day riding it is something that will test your reflexes and you should not relax and think this is just the final run in to the finish line. There are plenty of tight hairpin bends with steep slopes to keep you occupied. There is a small ascent on the ride into the centre of Morzine to tackle in the final kilometre but if you have got this far the adrenaline will keep you going and the thought of a refreshing beer (or about 16 hours in bed) should take your mind off the pain.

tour etappe 9 2023

On this private tour, we have selected for you the best sights in the most popular tourist destinations in Russia: Moscow and St Petersburg. In Moscow, you will see the most iconic places in the Russian capital: Red Square, St Basil’s Cathedral, the Kremlin, Sparrow Hills and Victory Park, as well as some of the most beautiful stations of the Moscow Metro. You will visit the main collection of Russian art in the country: the Tretyakov Gallery, and enjoy great views of the city from a cruise along the River Moscow. In addition to all this, you will also go to the VDNKh exhibition park, which will give you a taste of the Soviet Union with its many Soviet-era pavilions and spectacular monuments.

You will get to St Petersburg via a high-speed train. In the Northern Capital, as St Petersburg is often called, you will visit the main sights in the city and two of the grandest imperial residences located just outside the city.  You will, of course, visit the famous Winter Palace where the tsars once resided and which now holds the State Hermitage Museum, and also see where most of the tsars were buried in the cathedral of the Peter and Paul Fortress. You will have a boat cruise around the city known as the Venice of the North due to its many canals and bridges and guided tours of two of the city’s cathedrals: the Saviour Cathedral on the Spilled Blood, which is wonderfully decorated with mosaics, and St Isaac’s Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in the world.

From St Petersburg, you will have two trips. One to Pushkin (formerly Tsarkoe Selo) to visit the Catherine Palace and its famous Amber Rooms and the other to Peterhof to walk among the gardens of the estate, famous for its many fountains in various forms.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS TOUR

You’ll see all the main sights of Moscow and St Petersburg in one trip. We included guided tours in the most iconic places of the cities such as the Moscow Kremlin, the State Hermitage Museum, and the Peterhof and Catherine Palaces (including the famous Amber Room).  You’ll get a sense of imperial, Soviet and modern Russia.

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

tour etappe 9 2023

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
