Turns out I was the only one on the tour and that this had been outsourced to yet another company called Embassey alliance.I only found this out a day before the tour, had no idea of who my point of contact was and also the itinerary did not match the initial tour. Expensive for what it is and I have complained. Plus note is that drivers and guides are good at their job shame about management.

Review: Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ in Singapore – ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ needed more love

After nine years, Taylor Swift is performing at one of the biggest stages in Singapore in 2024. But there were minor snags that marred the first of six performances at the National Stadium. Here’s our concert review of Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ in Singapore.

“My mum (Andrea Swift) actually spent a lot of her childhood with her mum and dad and sister growing up in Singapore,” Taylor Swift shared this personal information nugget to the 60-thousand-strong crowd after performing marjorie , a song off her ninth studio album, evermore . Marjorie was written as a tribute to Swift’s late maternal grandmother, opera singer Marjorie Finlay. This relation reflected Swift’s impression of the city-state too.

Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ is undeniably the main concert event of 2024 in Singapore . As the Singapore leg is the only stop in Southeast Asia, many fans are coming from our neighbouring regions to town just for this gig.

Being one of the biggest living pop stars in the world currently, getting a ticket to see Swift perform wasn’t the easiest task. In fact, the process was even dubbed ‘The Great War’ by fans.

While I’m not an ardent Swiftie, her music discography got me through particular moments in my life. Heck, I’m just a year older than Swift, and hence, the relatability. Specifically the crush-coded You Belong With Me and ethereal Snow On The Beach (featuring Lana Del Rey) . Also, she has my respect for being a sharp songwriter and lyricist with her compositions. I knew I had to try my luck for a ticket to ‘The Eras Tour’ in Singapore. The concept and setlist are perfect to sum up her successful 18-year-long career.

I’ve watched the movie edit of ‘The Eras Tour’ and it’s safe to say there wasn’t a stark difference between the real and reel, save for a couple of region-specific banters (Singapore colloquialism) and, of course, the surprise acoustics segment (which we’ll get to later). After all, any attempts to alter and veer off what’s expected will send Swifties into frenzy mode.

Entry to the Singapore National Stadium was orderly. Most Swifties were dressed for the occasion, from the pastel colours of ‘Lover’ to sequinned outfits for ‘Midnights’ – whichever era resonated with them. The fan who wore a key lime green dog costume ( The Last Great American Dynasty ) definitely got my vote for Best Dressed.

Opening act Sabrina Carpenter impressed with her fresh musicality and wit, especially for the custom outro on nonsense she does for every concert supporting Swift. Night one in Singapore was “Gardens by the Bay, I wanna go there. / Then I’ll take you somewhere that has no hair, / Singapore, you’re so perfect that it’s not fair.”

Swift’s set promptly started moments after 7pm, after the iconic countdown timer reached zero. The robotic synth of Cruel Summer (a personal favourite) kicked off the ‘Lover’ era. Swift used the sleeper hit song to interact with the crowd for the first time in the evening by prompting them to sing along to the bridge. A thunderous response followed.

Overall, Swift’s delivery throughout the three-and-a-half hour-long concert was textbook perfect. She started a little clinical but quickly warmed up to Singapore from the ‘Fearless’ era. The acoustics proved to be flawed and caused a dent in this experience. Yes, National Stadium still isn’t an ideal concert venue to best appreciate music. It is, however, one of the only few venues that can allow a 55,000- 60,000 crowd.

*Note: Swift was more relaxed on night two, where she shared with fans that her hair “went back to factory reset-setting due to the humidity in Singapore.” If you’re wondering, her hair morphed from tamed to curly within the 3.5 hours.

It was also evident that eras before ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ were crowd favourites from the volume of the chants and sing-a-longs. Catchy and made for radio to be mega hits, those songs are certainly easier to digest. It was disappointing to hear the cheers dimmed and see a portion of the crowd in my zone getting restless during the ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ eras as both are Swift’s magnum opuses, music-wise. In Singapore, they are underrated.

To give benefit of the doubt, the casual fans here might be enjoying the slower-tempo songs in their own way, but scrolling through social media definitely wasn’t a polite way of doing so. As a consolation, I did spot a handful of Swifties mouthing enthusiastically to every word. One dude deserves to be #MVP for the night.

For me, I switched from casually singing to roaring on Champagne Problems (“She would’ve made such a lovely bride. / “What a shame she’s fucked in the head,” they said”) and The Last Great American Dynasty (“There goes the most shameless woman this town has ever seen. / She had a marvelous time ruinin’ everything”). Genius lyrics.

The brooding cinematic quality sets of ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ eras presented excellent accompanying narratives to the songs. This can be seen with the cult-like haunting circle of Willow and the ‘Folklore’ cabin.

Another highlight was experiencing the smooth transition from Don’t Blame Me to Look What You Made Me Do in person. Swift foreboded the increasing tempo and sinister bass with an assertive stance to become “the actress starring in your bad dreams”.

There were also a couple of endearing localised easter eggs peppered throughout the concert like dancer Kameron ‘Kam’ Saunders’ “No lah” on We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together .

Then there was the surprise song acoustics segment, which is like a rewarding blind box. As Swift sauntered towards the resting instruments in the infamous yellow dress, the crowd crossed their fingers tightly, hoping she would perform a song on their wishlist. Night one featured a mashup of Mine and Starlight performed with the guitar and another mashup of I Don’t Wanna Live Forever and Dress performed with the piano. Interestingly, the latter two tracks are songs from ‘Reputation’ and Swift’s Instagram streamed this segment live. This prompted a guessing game regarding the release of ‘Reputation’ (Taylor’s Version).

*Update: Night two featured a mashup of Long Story Short and The Story Of Us on the guitar and a mashup of Clean and title track evermore on the piano.

A greatest hits concert can be tricky to pull off but Swift shrewdly delivered the peaks of her career straightforwardly. ‘The Eras Tour’ has got to be one of the most important concerts in today’s popular culture, so make no reservations and catch it should the opportunity be presented to you. You’ll definitely see me at the National Stadium again on the final night of the Singapore leg.

Three hours into Bruce Springsteen ‘s epic return to Los Angeles on Thursday night with the E Street Band, he stared down the sold-out crowd at the Forum. “Do you have anything left?” he shouted, midway through “Twist and Shout,” the second-to-last song of his first L.A. show in eight years. Five decades in, the magic of a Springsteen show remains: He always seems to have a little bit left in the tank. 

The 2024 version of the tour has been looser than last year’s, which stuck fairly close to a single set list, and Thursday was no exception. Springsteen kicked off with a true rarity, a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” (most frequently played on the Tunnel of Love Express Tour back in 1988), before jumping into “Lonesome Day” (rarely played last year, but now a staple in the set) and “Prove It All Night,” then his live -favorite arena-rock reworking of Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped.”

Six dates into their return to the road, Springsteen and the E Street Band sounded like they had never been interrupted. “Are you having fun yet? Because we haven’t had fun yet,” Springsteen told the crowd just over an hour into his show. “This is our pre-fun. We’re here to wake you up, shake you up, and take you to higher ground. The E Street Band is here to bring the joyous power of rock & roll into your life. But we need your help. We plan on sending you home with your feet hurting, your hands hurting, your ass in paralysis, and your sexual organs stimulated.”

Springsteen maintains a remarkably simple setup and show presentation compared to the other blockbuster live shows currently on the road. The visuals are limited to video screens and elegant stage lights, keeping the focus on the 17 musicians onstage with him. He doesn’t really need much else.

Comic Bert Kreischer leaves hilariously crass 5-star review of Boyd's Jig & Reel pork rinds

We really should have expected no less from a comedian known for performing shirtless, gut proudly on display (although to be fair, Bert Kreischer lost 45 pounds last year).

Kreischer, whose career has evolved from being Rolling Stone’s 1997 "Number One Partier in the Nation" to becoming a popular stand-up comic, was in Knoxville for his Tops Off World Tour on April 6.

While in town, Kreischer made his way to Boyd's Jig & Reel in Old City and indulged in what he called "the best god---n pork rinds I've ever had in my entire life."

Kreischer, who has posted very few reviews on Yelp, felt moved to write a lengthy and − in keeping with his persona − hilariously crass ode to pork.

"When God, on the third day, invented pig, he must've had in mind what the chef at Boyd's Jig and Reel was gonna do to it," he wrote in the five-star review. "Trust me, when I say this, I believe in three things, the Lord, my wife's naked body and the pork rinds here."

Kresicher's Yelp review quickly ended up on the Scottish pub's Instagram, with the pub advising, "Be sure to come and get the pork rinds that The Machine swears by!"

Those house-fried pork rinds, described on the menu as "fluffy" and coated with a special house seasoning, are available at lunch and dinner, according to the online menu.

SINGAPORE: Decades ago, trishaws used to be one of the most popular modes of public transport in Singapore, but today, they no longer ply the streets.

On Tuesday (Apr 9), the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) confirmed with CNA that no trishaw service is operating in the country  after the contract of the last operator ended and was not renewed.

From taking people through crowded inner-city streets in the 1940s to becoming a tourist attraction and their eventual demise, CNA journeys through the history of trishaws in Singapore.

1914 – 1943: FROM RICKSHAWS TO TRISHAWS

The trishaw evolved from the rickshaw – a small, two-wheeled cart pulled by a man. 

Originating from Japan, rickshaws were first seen in Singapore in the 1880s. They were one of the earliest modes of transport in Singapore, alongside steam trams and bullock carts.

Rickshaw rides were inexpensive and ideal for short journeys through crowded inner-city streets.

The first trishaws were officially registered in Singapore in 1914, according to Roots, a website by the National Heritage Board (NHB). Known as “pedal rickshaws”, these early trishaws were essentially modified rickshaws attached to bicycles. 

But the initial batch of 15 trishaws was said to be “crudely constructed” and did not last long on Singapore’s streets, according to the National Library Board’s (NLB) Infopedia website.

An American company’s request to import 500 trishaws in 1914 was rejected by the British colonial authorities due to road safety concerns.

During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1945, trishaws were reintroduced. The first batch of 10 trishaws plied the streets on Aug 7, 1943, with an official fare rate of 15 cents per mile. 

The operator rented out each trishaw at 80 cents per day, according to an article in the Syonan Times – a propaganda newspaper that was run by the Japanese military during the Occupation.

Many of these early trishaw riders were Chinese immigrants from the Henghua, Hokchia and Hokkien dialect groups hailing from Fujian province in China. 

They arrived in Singapore from the late 19th century and were “relatively late immigrants”, said NLB’s Infopedia. 

With traditional occupations and trades taken up by earlier immigrants, they started in the rickshaw industry, before becoming trishaw riders.

At that time, most trishaw riders were fluent in more than one language or dialect, although not many spoke English.

No more trishaw rides in Singapore after last licensed operator ceased tours mid-2023

1940s: post-war boom.

Trishaw numbers surged in the 1940s, especially after the Japanese Occupation when petrol for motor vehicles was scarce.

Colonial authorities abolished rickshaws in 1947, prompting many rickshaw pullers to transition to trishaw riders.

These trishaws during the post-war era were crafted from local materials and parts. Initially built in various shapes and sizes, their dimensions were later standardised by the Municipal Commission in 1946 and again in 1948.

Their numbers grew as they played a vital role in supporting “informal sector businesses”, such as hawkers, street pedlars and petty traders by transporting goods for them, said NLB's Infopedia website.

But they also facilitated illicit activities, such as gambling and prostitution, by taking people into the back alleys of shophouses where such activities took place.

In 1948, the rates for trishaws were fixed at 20 cents for every half mile or part thereof. Instead of going by distance, trishaw riders could also charge S$1.50 for every hour, or 40 cents for every additional 15 mins.

There were mainly two shifts – one from 5am to 2pm, and the other for the rest of the day.

1950s – 1970s: DECLINE AS PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The trishaw industry saw a decline from the mid-1950s due to increasing government regulation and the rise of motor vehicles, as well as urbanisation.

After the surrender of the Japanese in 1945, colonial authorities were keen to control petty trading and introduced regulations to limit street hawkers and trishaw riders after their numbers swelled during the Occupation.

In December 1946, mandatory registration and licensing were established for trishaw riders, accompanied by a licensing test and a requirement to wear arm badges. 

The Singapore Rickshaw and Trishaw Workers’ Union opposed these measures, citing the high licensing fees of S$5 and the perceived degradation of its members with the arm badges. Many trishaw riders refused to sign up.

A compromise was eventually reached – the arm badges were replaced with badges and the union would conduct the licensing tests.

In June 1948, a law was introduced to disallow the registration of new trishaws.

Further quotas were announced the following year – the authorities set the maximum number of trishaw riders at 9,000 and capped trishaws at 7,900. These quotas were reduced by 1954 to 5,175 riders and 4,820 trishaws.

“These reductions were usually justified by the authorities on the grounds that trishaws were either too slow or taking up too much parking space,” said the NLB Infopedia article.

It was not just regulations. The rise in the number of cars, including taxis, hastened the decline of trishaws.

With cars becoming more affordable, trishaws became a comparatively dangerous means of travel.

Taxis were the most direct threat to the trishaw industry – and not only legitimate ones. Illegal or “pirate taxis” in the 1950s took customers away from trishaws.

Away from the roads, Singapore’s rapid modernisation and urbanisation following its independence in 1965 further accelerated trishaws' decline.

The urbanisation programme cleared out slums and squatter settlements in the inner-city area, resulting in trishaw riders losing their primary source of income as their clients mainly came from these areas.

By the late 1970s, trishaw riders had become a dying breed.

1970s – 2023: LAST RIDE

Although trishaws were no longer a common mode of public transport, they were retained as heritage attractions for tourists to experience the Singapore of yesteryear.

“With progress and advancement of urban planning, and the public transportation system in Singapore, the relevance of the trishaw as a means of transportation declined,” said Mr Benjamin Cassim, senior lecturer in hospitality and tourism management at Temasek Polytechnic.

“As a supporting tourist service, trishaw rides offered visitors in Singapore the opportunity to view some of the heritage precincts at a slower pace and get more information from the trishaw operator through initiated conversations,” he added.

An LTA spokesman told The New Paper in 2014 that it had stopped issuing new Trishaw Rider’s Vocational Licences to individual riders since September 2001.

The popularity of trishaws dwindled over the years, and they became a rare sight during the COVID-19 pandemic when borders were closed.

Trishaw Uncle was the last sole licensed operator of trishaw tours in Singapore, but it ended its contract with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in May 2023.

The company used to run tours covering popular tourist destinations like Little India, Chinatown, Kampong Glam and the Civic District.

Trisaw Uncle had to return its site at Albert Mall Trishaw Park on Queen Street for “other uses”, its executive Tieu Xin Yue told CNA on Tuesday.

STB's director of travel agents and tourist guides Annie Chang confirmed that the site of Trishaw Park was "returned to the relevant agencies for their review on usage of the site".

"There are currently no other trishaw services operating in Singapore," she added.

Trishaw Uncle owned 100 trishaws but scrapped these shortly after its contract ended, as it was unable to find a suitable holding place for them, Ms Tieu said.

On Thursday night (April 11), the Barclays Center in New York City was electrified by the presence of Bad Bunny . The arena, filled to its 19,000-person capacity, buzzed with anticipation as the Puerto Rican superstar kicked off the first show of his three-night stint in the city.

“New York has been very important in my career, where dreams come true,” Benito told his fans in his native Spanish during the performance. “Being on the tour feels really amazing, going to each place and seeing it, all the cities, but New York, it’s something else. It feels more amazing than usual. Seeing all those PR and DR flags makes it even more special. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being here, it means a lot to me.”

Bad Bunny — who wore Prada sunglasses, a velour suit, and a gold cross necklace — delivered a dynamic performance that was an amalgamation of music and spectacle. It included a grand orchestra, an equestrian entrance, a surprise appearance by Bryant Myers to perform “Seda,” a jigsaw-like stage that transformed into the Brooklyn Bridge, and, of course, a repertoire of his biggest hits. This was part of his Most Wanted Tour — in support of his Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana album — which kicked off on Feb. 21 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Live Nation-promoted tour is halfway through its schedule, with forthcoming performances in cities including Austin, Texas (Apr. 26-27), Atlanta, Ga. (May 14-15), and Miami, Fla. (May 24-26). According to Billboard Boxscore, the tour has already been a commercial success, grossing $84.2M and selling 282K tickets over its first 18 shows. It has consistently sold out venues, demonstrating Bad Bunny’s continued widespread appeal.

Here are five standout moments from the first night of Bad Bunny’s Most Wanted Tour at the Barclays Center:

The Grandeur of an Orchestra

Bad Bunny’s grand entrance was enhanced by the stirring symphonic sounds of a grand orchestra. Setting a triumphant tone reminiscent of a championship bout or a cinematic Rocky Balboa moment, the orchestra filled the arena with melodious harmony for 10 minutes as the show commenced at 9:30 p.m. Adding to the immersive experience, orchestra members made surprise appearances throughout the audience, accompanying Bad Bunny’s rhythms, particularly during the opening numbers, “Nadie Sabe” and “Monaco.”

An Equestrian Entrance

The concert’s midway moment was marked by Bad Bunny’s dramatic arrival on a horse , embodying a masked cowboy in a fuschia outfit with fringes. Despite previous criticism from PETA, the superstar displayed gentleness towards the horse, who was also accompanied by a trainer. As arguably the first reggaetón artist to incorporate a horse into his act, he joins the ranks of regional Mexican icons like Joan Sebastian, Vicente Fernández, and Pepe Aguilar, who uphold this tradition.

Playing 'Amorfoda' on a Piano Upside Down

Displaying his entertainment abilities in unconventional ways, Bad Bunny played the first keys of “Amorfoda” on the piano — notably, upside down atop the instrument — to the astonishment of the audience. He also delivered a soulful rendition of “un x100to” accompanied solely by the piano, marking a poignant moment in the two-and-a-half-hour concert.

Surprise Guest Performance by Bryant Myers

The concert was further enlivened by a surprise performance from Bryant Myers, who joined Bunny on stage to perform “Seda” from Bunny’s latest album, Nadie Sabe . Their collaboration stretches back to 2017 with the hit “Pa Ti.” Previously, Myers had also made a surprise appearance at BB’s Los Angeles show in March. Their joy in their longstanding musical partnership was evident in their performances.

A Jigsaw-Like Stage Morphing into the Brooklyn Bridge

The stage was a dynamic piece of artwork, constantly shifting forms throughout the concert. With two stages positioned at opposite ends of the arena, and a bridge-like catwalk in between, the stage at one point transformed into an impressive replica of the Brooklyn Bridge, made possible by intricate light work. This captivating visual element added a unique dimension to the concert experience.

2024 Lexus LBX review: Little but luxe

The LBX might be the cheapest Lexus around, but it was designed for self-indulgence instead of affordability

NOW that I’ve had the chance to drive it in Singapore, the Lexus LBX is exactly the kind of car a more successful version of me might be seen driving. It’s compact and agile, has a lovely interior, and comes with a hybrid drivetrain made by a company famed for reliability.

As a child-free man-child who loves nothing more than spending money on himself, and whose attitude to waiting for a tow truck by the side of the road with his head in his hands is very much a case of “been there, done that”, I can get behind a car like the little Lexus.

It turns out that the LBX was conceived precisely to fulfil a bit of self-indulgence. It may be the smallest Lexus and, at S$228,800 and up, the cheapest one (in part because you can have one with a Category A Certificate of Entitlement), but the compact crossover is meant to be something luxurious yet casual, and not merely affordable.

Apparently, Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda showed the Lexus team the comfy but lavishly-priced sneakers that he likes to wear to the racing track, and told them to draw up a new Lexus along those lines. Presumably, he ordered them to think on their feet.

From that strange brief arose the “Lexus Breakthrough X-over”, a silk purse made from the basic components of Toyota’s Yaris Cross, a utilitarian but sensible car.

Yet, there’s little trace of the Yaris Cross’ cheapness in the Lexus, especially if you opt for the S$5,000 Cool grade. That slathers the cabin in a material called “ultrasuede”, which actually lends it quite a hand-built aspect. It also adds 64 ambient lighting colours that you can toggle between, at your whims and fancy.

The dashboard is dominated by a responsive touchscreen that measures 9.8 inches, which doesn’t sound like a lot these days, but looks just right in a car this size. A high-resolution 12.3-inch screen takes care of the driver instruments, but there’s also a head-up display that’s bright and sharp.

It all looks contemporary, but you get the sense that Lexus’ main goal was to make the LBX an easy car to live with. Some climate settings, the volume control as well as important stuff like the birds-eye view camera and self-parking system still live on physical switches, which is common sense if you ask me.

There’s only one cupholder, but otherwise the cabin has plenty of space for odds and ends, especially for a small car.

But while the LBX has an interior that feels classy, what I liked most about the car is the raunchy way it zips around. Like something on Ritalin, the Lexus carves through corners with focus and precision, giving you plenty of feedback through the steering along the way. It sticks to the road in that no-nonsense way that builds plenty of confidence, yet it feels light enough on its feet that things don’t feel joyless.

But as much as I enjoyed its agility, there’s little getting away from the fact that the LBX is, for want of a better phrase, pretty slow. It also complains if you try to drive it hard, raising its voice fairly robustly for something calling itself a Lexus.

The hybrid drivetrain is much more relaxed if you are, and is really at its most appealing when you’re shuffling along at city speeds, letting the electric motor do as much of the work as possible.

Do it right, and the LBX is fabulously frugal. Officially, it’s supposed to sip 5.1 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres, so you could in theory cross 900 km before needing to slosh fuel down its throat. In practice, it’s often even more efficient than that, and trying to drive smoothly and thoughtfully enough to coax the best from the petrol-electric hybrid system can be surprisingly engaging.

If nothing else, the Lexus’ efficiency is a reminder that it has one of the most sophisticated drivetrains around. What’s under its curvy bonnet is certainly far more complex than the turbo setup that its German rivals use.

But where the LBX comes up short is at the other end of the car. At 400 litres, the boot is no more than decent in size, and the rear seating is cramped by class standards. This isn’t a car you’ll want if you need plenty of space.

It’s actually the German brands that deliver strongly on such workhorse attributes, with the BMW X1 and new Volkswagen Tiguan especially strong in terms of practicality. Boisterous engine aside, the LBX feels like something designed to be more fun than those cars.

Just as there are loafers and there are Louboutins, the Lexus is aimed at the more indulgent end of the market. Whether that includes you comes down to whether you can live with its compactness, but as they say, if the shoe fits...

Springsteen hasn’t spoken so much publicly about the condition that took him off the road for six months, and which caused these particular L.A. dates to be postponed for four. But something about his first Forum show Thursday caused him to get a little bit chattier about the malady.

“We’re sorry we missed you last time,” he said during a spoken interlude in the middle of an epic version of “Tenth Avenue Freezeout,” being performed as the show’s penultimate number  after the setlist had already passed the three-hour point. “I hope we didn’t put you out too much. But, man,” he elaborated, “I had the worst motherfucking bellyache you could ever imagine.”

“When I sang, my belly ached,” he said.

“When I did anything, my belly ached,” he continued.

Bruce Springsteen has fire in the belly. Lucky for him and everyone else, it’s back to being a fire that does not consume.

At a length of three hours and 20 minutes, Springsteen’s opening Forum show pretty much set the bar for not gentle into that good Thursday night. Its 200-minute running time was 40 minutes longer than most other sets of his lately, all of which already test and transcend what a guy in his early 70s who recently recovered from illness ought to be pulling off. It’s reductive, though, to focus too much on the running time, which makes it feel like an endurance test or marathon. Yes, every minute added onto a show beyond the tour mean confers some kind of badge of pride on attendees, and it’s great fun to start doing the numbers as a show begins to expand… but the miracle is not just that he endures.

The miracle is that he bobs and weaves with a dynamic setlist that needs that much expansiveness to sufficiently cover multiple moments of sorrow or grief and “Twist and Shout” (should you be so lucky to get that bonus track as a celebration of life, as Thursday’s crowd did).

As fans have already noted during these first few weeks of the 2024 touring resumption, the setlists tend to be only about 75% set in stone. That’s to say, they’re much looser than when the E Street Band hit the road again in 2023, closer to how they used to be in legendary days of yore. For anyone who likes to go to more than one show on a tour, or just for anybody who enjoys knowing they’re in the presence of some free-spiritedness, this flexibility is a godsend.

Given that the surprises each night are added onto the surety of some of the most powerful song sequences he’s ever constructed for a tour, a 2024 Bruce Springsteen show is really something that gives “overstuffed” a good name.

Most of his shows on this show have opened with “Lonesome Day,” which is nearly an overture for the conflicted lyrical feelings that will come up in the emotionally dynamic hours to come. But occasionally he’ll start off with a ringer in advance even of that opener. Thursday, it was a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom,” which ain’t nothing but primal — the blues as filtered through a “Nuggets” sensibility. He hadn’t done this oldie since 2016, which augured well for tour premieres and oddities.

Would an oldie this obscure count among the highlights of a three-hour-plus set that includes an inordinate amount of the best rock songs ever written? On the face of it, no. Or yes, for that segment of fans that lives for the idea of audibles being called.

The biggest surprise of the night: the return of Patti Scialfa, who performed on a few 2023 shows and then disappeared from public view. (“Where’s Patti?” isn’t quite up there with “Where’s Shelly?,” but it still remained a question.) Now we knew, without the FBI being called in: His bride is just living her post-E-Street life, happy to show up for a cameo instead of being tied to a recurring gig. “My baby’s back!,” Springsteen exclaimed, kicking off the first of two numbers the couple performed as a team. The recently rare “Tougher Than the Rest” featured Scialfa leaning in close on their single mic for harmony, followed by “Fire.” That number, Springsteen said, hadn’t been played “in a long time. We did do it on Broadway,” he clarified, but “Patti’s never done it.” By which he possibly meant never performed it as a full-on duet; his wife unexpectedly got the first verse of this ‘70s perennial all to herself. (Patti as a Pointer Sister, to name the group that really made the song famous? Live long enough, and all sorts of things can happen.)

The bones of the set were otherwise mostly intact. “Prove It All Night” follows “Lonesome Day” at the beginning, as a promise. But sometimes it seems like rock ‘n’ roll’s power as an elixir won’t be enough, if you’re reallly following how an underlying narrative develops.

“Ghosts” and “Letter to You,” both from the album of the latter name, overtly introduce the theme of loss, so often returned to. Then the mournful hits keep coming, as pointed segues. “My City of Ruins,” whose “Rise up” chorus barely disguises just how sad it is, goes in for more than 10 minutes, with cheerful chatter, as Bruce introduces the band, followed by bittersweet moments dedicated to the group’s fallen members. That in memoriam segued into a cover of the Commodores’ ‘80s hit “Nightshift,” which pays homage to soul music’s lost ‘60s and ‘70s greats, including Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson.

The soul memorial led into “Last Man Standing,” his song about realizing he was the last surviving member of his original band — a song so solemn it’s performed just by Springsteen and a solitary trumpeter, who might as well be playing “Taps.” From there, much of the crowd is relieved to hear Springsteen singing something as light as “Backstreets”… or is it? “Until the end… until the end…,” he sang, drawing one line out into a chant. It’s a “Born to Run”-based suite that has finally, after 49 year, turned into the requiem it was apparently always meant to be.

And then, as this emotionally fraught show drew closer to a close, we got the Three Stooges. That is, during the go-for-broke joy of “Rosalita,” there was a moment when the otherwise stone-faced Little Steven Van Zandt drew close to Springsteen and they indulged in some Larry, Curly and Moe-style face-poking, prodding, mugging and noise-making.

Springsteen has put on a tour that is the most bittersweet show on earth, until it finally settles for being the happiest, and occasionally even goofiest… and then turns heartbreaking again for the final encore. The most abrupt segue might be the final one, when, having climaxed with “Tenth Avenue” and (on this particular night) “Twist and Shout,” he sent the rest of the band off to their sleep while he serenaded the crowd with a completely solo number, “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” boldly sending the audience out thinking again about loved ones they’ve lost, if with a ballad that feels like a comforting lullaby. By the end of the show, he’s kept all these things in balance enough that any of these notes feel like they could be an honest place to land, whether it’s with an Isley Brothers tent revival or a heart-rending ode to creating memories as a means of cheating death.

Given his stage mastery, was it possible Springsteen was moving even himself with this show? It’s probably risky i to parse exactly what emotions a showman this great might be spontaneously feeling. The most deeply emotional moments are deeply baked into the tour. As always, he gave the much-quoted speech about his old friend and bandmate George Theiss’ passing, about the clarity that death brings the living. This should be rote for Springsteen by now, given how little variation he introduces into the homily, as he retells it. Yet his closed eyes looked moist enough as he eulogized his teenaged soulmate once again Thursday night. Honestly, it could also just have been perspiration (even though his face didn’t look that sweaty in the closeups seen on the two big screens for the rest of the show).

Either way, sweat or tears, it was working, like it’s always worked for a few generations now. “You’ll need a good companion for this part of the ride,” Springsteen sang toward the end of the show in “Land of Hope of Dreams,” part of the tumult of climactic numbers. Maybe he didn’t mean that line as an actual rock ‘n’ roll direct-sales pitch at the time he wrote it, but he sure keeps living up to it.

Keith Lee's food tour of Toronto has gotten more airtime, it seems, than Monday's solar eclipse and the Raptors winning the 2019 NBA Championship combined, but with his latest rave review, it's not slowing down any time soon.

After apparently being told by hordes of Toronto residents that he's not truly experiencing the city if he doesn't try Somali food, he set off to Sahan Restaurant to dip his toes — and taste buds — into the East African cuisine.

"I was told and borderline threatened on multiple occasions that if I came to Toronto and didn't try Somali food, I didn't experience Toronto," he says at the beginning of the video.

Upon the pick-up of the food, Lee readily praised the restaurant's service, noting the woman working at the restaurant who walked Lee's sister (who picked up the food,) through every dish.

The food itself didn't do too shabby on the Keith Lee scale either.

Lee's first dish, the Awlal (Goat Ribs), earned an immediate eight-point-two-out-of-10, while the T-bone got an eight and the Suqaar pulling in a seven-point-eight.

While already a Scarborough favourite for Somali food, Sahan should be prepared, following such a positive review, for the Keith Lee Effect to propel them to new heights.

The food definitely shines in this most recent video, but some people are taking notice of a common theme in many of Lee's Toronto-based videos and are starting to clown him for it.

"At this point, Keith is a Scarborough Manz …I swear this is like the 50th review from that part of town," one person comments.

"Can we expand past Scarborough or nah?" writes another.

While Lee has reviewed Afro's Pizza  near Yonge & Dundas, Dundas West's Sisters & Co  and Weston Mount-Dennis' Old Nassau , Suhan marks Lee's third review of a Scarborough-based business out of seven videos total, and it looks like they're ready to see him branch out.
