Tour support is financial support for a touring band. It can be used to cover per diems, travel, accommodation, equipment, and vehicle rental and whatever other expenses come up during a tour. Historically, when tour support was offered, it was usually paid by the record label. In the 21st century, however, tour support and tour sponsorship has gravitated to business conglomerates and even drink companies with no direct involvement in music.

Industry Conglomerates

The music business has drastically changed in response to the various crises and opportunities of digitalization. As a part of this sometimes amazing, at other times troubling transformation, some companies, and prominent artists have dissolved almost completely the distinction between artist management , tour management and record label, a part of a trend toward the monetization of everything related to the artist and her music. The endgame in this trend may be the artist who owns their label. In such an instance, does this mean the artist has nowhere to look for tour support or that has complete control over the tour support budget? For big artists, the latter certainly; for others more like no tour support at all.

Small Label

Touring is extremely expensive, so it's not surprising that tour support has become hard to come by, especially for indie music . It has been a continuing and growing trend; now, only the largest superstars are likely to get significant tour support. There are a few reasons for this:

  • As album sales have shrunk, often replaced by digital releases of singles, Indie labels may not have enough money to foot the bill
  • The returns on tour support are not guaranteed, especially on tours that are essentially promotional tours designed to help a band build a fan base - the tour may help the band find an audience, but it may not directly translate into enough record sales to offset the investment.

Even before the digital revolution, small label support for touring groups suffered from these and other more-or-less built-in problems. Often the tours succeeded in expanding the fan base -- but thereby enabled the artist's move from the small label to a major. In other instances, as with Stomu Yamashta's ground-breaking, but too-hip-for-the-room world music group GO, even strong tour support offered by adept music promoter , producer, and label head Clive Davis ultimately ended without a payoff. It, incidentally, was a group in which almost every member was a star or superstar, including Stevie Winwood, krautrock and EDM pioneer Klause Schultz, Al Demiola, and Santana's star drummer, Michael Shrieve. And there were more -- it was an eleven-piece band in which every member had a fan base. Fans just didn't necessarily want to see all 11 of them onstage at the same time.

Which may be the underlying lesson of the trend toward little or no tour support at all for most musicians: you can't push on a string . The contemporary attitude by tour management and labels now tends to be along the lines that either a new band will succeed somehow without tour support because the audience really wants to hear them (even if they didn't know it until they catch them on their painful, budget-less first tour) or ultimately the audience really doesn't, and no amount of tour money will finally make a difference.

Glass Animals Will Embark on ‘Tour of Earth’ With 2024 Live Shows

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Later this year, Glass Animals will bring their forthcoming studio album I Love You So F***ing Much on an international tour fittingly titled Glass Animals: Tour of Earth.

The record, which features the newly released single “Creatures in Heaven,” will arrive on July 19, while the tour is scheduled to kick off just under a month later. The band will be joined on the road by Kevin Abstract, Eyedress, Blondshell, and The Big Moon on select dates.

Tour of Earth begins on Aug. 7 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will close out its North American run on Sept. 22 in Austin, Texas. Glass Animals will make stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden and Inglewood’s Kia Forum, in addition to performances in Philadelphia, Toronto, Cincinnati, Nashville, Phoenix, Raleigh, and more. The tour also includes two back-to-back shows at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado.

General sale for North America and Europe will begin on Thursday, April 11 at 10 a.m. local time via the official Glass Animals website. Presales will begin on Tuesday, April 9.

The Far Right Is Crawling With Eclipse Conspiracy Theories

Ted cruz is getting nervous he’s going to lose his senate seat, jojo siwa is all grown up on new single 'karma', willie nelson thinks queer message in orville peck video is 'more important than ever'.

“Life can change dramatically, but sometimes you aren’t able to change as quickly on a personal level. You end up feeling like a spectator,” frontman Dave Bayley shared in a statement. “And then you are asked and expected to be a certain type of person, a different person. But…I wasn’t sure how. It confused me to the point of not knowing who I was or if anything was real.” Eventually, he accepted a simple truth: “Human connection and the love between us is much bigger, more important, and more complex than anything else.”

The tour will see the band playing many iconic venues around the world for the first time, including Madison Square Garden in New York, Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, The Gorge Amphitheatre in Seattle, Kia Forum in Inglewood, 3Arena in Dublin, The O2 in London, and many more.

Yesterday, Glass Animals announced details of their highly anticipated fourth studio album, I Love You So F***ing Much , set for release on July 19th . The album is introduced by the band’s new single, “ Creatures in Heaven ,” out now—listen HERE and watch the visualizer HERE .

I Love You So F***ing Much is the follow-up to 2020’s critically revered Dreamland , which sold over 12 million copies globally and gave life to “ Heat Waves ,” the record-breaking song that became the biggest international hit from a British band in almost 30 years . It was the first song by a British band since the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” in 1995 to claim #1 for five consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 , and the first song to reach #1 with a single writer and producer since Pharell’s “Happy” —leading to the pop world’s biggest acts, including Florence Welch , all wanting to work with Glass Animals frontman, songwriter, and producer, Dave Bayley . But the birth of I Love You So F***ing Much was an existential crisis. Dave found himself struggling to make sense of this newfound global stardom, having watched it all happen while the world was in lockdown.

He says, “Life can change dramatically, but sometimes you aren’t able to change as quickly on a personal level. You end up feeling like a spectator. And then you are asked and expected to be a certain type of person, a different person. But…I wasn’t sure how. It confused me to the point of not knowing who I was or if anything was real.” It took being stranded on a cliff in a wooden house on stilts during one of California’s biggest storms in history to push that feeling into a full existential crisis. In forced isolation, watching trees tumble down mountains and assuming “death was coming,” Dave began asking questions of himself, of the universe, and of the human experience: namely, love. As he came to accept himself as an introvert, Dave realized that “human connection and the love between us is much bigger, more important, and more complex than anything else” . “Creatures in Heaven” is the sublime first glimpse into ten intimate love stories set against the backdrop of the universe.

LeBron James & Magic Johnson Supported Los Angeles Rams Legend Aaron Donald After Retirement

Los Angeles legends LeBron James and Magic Johnson were among many high-profile stars to show Rams star Aaron Donald Support after his retirement

  • Author: Matt Galatzan

In this story:

Los Angeles Rams superstar Aaron Donald hung up his cleats last month, officially retiring from the NFL after a Hall-of-Fame career.

And while many Rams fans were saddened that the Donald era came to a close, he largely received overwhelming support at nearly every turn.

In fact, during an interview on 'Green Light with Chris Long' , Donald revealed that he heard from some of the biggest names in L.A. Sports history, with Magic Johnson and LeBron James both among the star-studded names reaching out and sending their support.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

“A lot of people reached out,” Donald told Long of his post-retirement experience. “Like, LeBron (reached) out. Magic Johnson reached out. (Kevin) Durant reached out. A lot of people that are great players and great in their era and did a lot of great things reached out just to congratulate me on my career. It’s pretty special, bro, when you think about how many people reached out. Warren Sapp reached out. A bunch of guys.”

Despite starting his career in St. Louis, Donald cemented his name as one the greatest sports figures in Los Angeles history. Certainly, that is a crowded field to join as well, with James and Johnson just two of a litany of legendary sports figures in the city's history.

Of course, names like Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Sandy Koufax, Jackie Robinson, Vin Scully, Clayton Kershaw, and many others certainly loom large.

Not to mention former Rams like Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Larry Wilson, and Eric Dickerson.

But even stacked up against all those names, regardless of the sport, Donald can hold his head high and rest assured that his name belongs near the top.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour made her a billionaire

Swift's $1.1 billion fortune makes her the first musician to join forbes' billionaires list based solely on music and performances.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift made her debut on a new chart: Forbes’ billionaires list.

The pop superstar was propelled to billionaire status last October, thanks to a combination of her music catalog and the major revenues from her sold-out Eras Tour shows. With a net worth of $1.1 billion, according to Forbes, Swift is now one of the 2,781 billionaires on the list for 2024.

The 34-year-old is the first musician to join the list solely based on her songs and performances, and not from additional income from brand partnerships, business ventures, or other money-making activities.

Swift’s billionaire status is made up of more than $500 million in estimated wealth amassed from royalties and touring, combined with a $500 million music catalog and about $125 million in real estate, according to Forbes.

Over the last three years, Swift has re-released several of her hit albums to regain ownership after a rights dispute between herself and record executive Scooter Braun (who purchased Big Machine Records, the label that signed Swift for more than a decade, in 2019). And last year, she embarked on the Eras Tour — starting in the U.S. and continuing to sell out stadiums worldwide — which reportedly brought in a historic $4.1 billion in earnings for Swift.

Other famous faces who made it onto the list include Magic Johnson, who makes his first appearance on the chart this year with a $1.2 billion fortune; Rihanna with her two multi-billion dollar brands, Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty; and Michael Jordan, thanks to his lucrative partnership with Nike.

As for the rest of the billionaires list, CEO of the sprawling French luxury empire, LVMH, Bernard Arnault topped the ranks with an estimated $233 billion. He was followed by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who has an estimated wealth of $195 billion. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos rounded out the top three billionaires worldwide with a $194 billion fortune, according to Forbes.

Your SoCal Weather Report For Friday, April 5: Rain, Mountain Snow And Thunderstorms

View of the downtown Los Angeles skyline from behind a rain-soaked car windshield.

About those advisories

This day in history, things to do.

It may not be winter anymore, but it sure feels like it today

  • Today’s weather: Rain, thunderstorms
  • Beaches: 50s
  • Mountains: 30s-40s
  • Inland: 50s
  • Warnings and advisories: Winter weather, Wind advisory, High Surf

Daytime highs across the Southland will be in the upper 50s, nighttime lows will be in the 40s. In the higher mountain elevations, expect highs in the 30s with snow showers.

We'll see showers throughout the day with a chance of thunderstorms later this afternoon. Forecasters say the thunderstorms could produce small hail and sudden bursts of steady rain. The good news is that the storm will begin to move out of the region later this evening.

Looking ahead, we'll have a sunny and dry weekend, but below normal temperatures for this time of year — expect highs in the 60s.

The National Weather Service has issued a couple of advisories due to the storm.

A winter weather warning has been issued for the San Gabriel, San Bernardino and Riverside county mountains. Up to a foot of snow could fall at higher elevations above 6,000 feet. One to three inches of snow is expected as low as 3,000 feet.

It will be windy along the coast — a wind advisory has been extended to Ventura, L.A county beaches and the Malibu coast along with Palos Verdes Hills. Expect winds to be strongest starting at noon through 9 p.m. with gusts reaching up to 40 mph.

High surf is also expected along the coast with large breaking waves between 7 to 10 feet high.

On this day in 1983, strong winds at Disneyland prompted the shutdown of the Skyway gondola lift.

  • It's Food Friday! What better way to kick off the weekend than a couple of grilled cheeses? We got you covered .
  • Japanese Film & Animation Soundtracks : A Listening Party: Japanese whiskey? Check. A beautiful urban garden? Check. Sashimi and other fancy snacks? A super cool soundtrack and anime films? Pregnant Lea Michele Cradles Baby Bump at NYC Event as 'Funny Girl' Tour Starring Katerina McCrimmon Arrives in LA

Lea Michele starred in the Funny Girl revival on Broadway, but she isn’t leading the national tour production that is traveling around the country right now.

The 37-year-old actress, who is pregnant with her second child , cradled her baby bump while walking the red carpet at the 2024 Hope Rising Benefit on Thursday night (April 4) at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City.

Lea was joined by Anna Wintour at the event.

One night earlier, the Funny Girl tour had its opening night performance in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre.

Newcomer Katerina McCrimmon is leading the production and she got rave reviews and standing ovations for her work as Fanny Brice. “The best thing about Katerina McCrimmon’s dazzling performance is that she makes the character her own,” a review in the Los Angeles Times said, adding that she “brings the house down in Fanny’s poleaxing first-act numbers.”

Funny Girl is playing at Center Theatre Group’s Ahmanson Theatre through April 28. Get tickets now!

FYI: Lea is wearing Michael Kors with a Brilliant Earth Cuff Bracelet.

How to visit the best private gardens in and around L.A.

A pergola covered with wisteria and surrounded by flowers

It’s been a tough two years for garden voyeurs.

The spring of 2020 promised more than 20 garden tours in Southern California, popular fundraising events that would allow participants to wander through other people’s private spaces, closely examining their plants and landscape designs.

For the record:

9:10 a.m. April 7, 2022 A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the time for the Claremont Eclectic tour’s ticket and map pickup as 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The onset of COVID-19 quickly canceled those events, however, even though they were outdoor tours. At that point, we weren’t even sure how the disease spread — remember wondering if it was safe to open your windows? — so no one felt comfortable with strangers gathering on their property, garden fans or no.

Some organizations tried virtual tours, with people paying to look at landscapes online, but it was a sad substitute for walking in the fragrant green of real, live SoCal gardens, with bees humming on the flowers and lizards skittering underfoot.

So thank goodness for 2022 (and COVID vaccines), because the garden good times are back, with at least 17 SoCal garden tours scheduled in April and May.

Mike Esparza and his mom, Libby Esparza, in the yard of his Long Beach home.

Here’s a chance to explore yards of every design, such as Mike Esparza’s “Man Garden,” a lush, shade-dappled retreat behind his 1926 Tudor home in Long Beach. He took out the old boring lawn in front and back, dug trenches along his fence line to keep back an invasion of bamboo shoots from his neighbor’s yard and then rejected the plans his first landscape architect offered for the backyard because “it was just a bunch of browns,” as in plants with mahogany leaves.

“I wanted a man’s garden with a lot of texture and color, but I didn’t want frilly flowers,” he said. “I wanted something that stays year-round, with texture and color.”

So his friend Gary Putnam, an employee of Brita’s Old Town Gardens in Seal Beach and an amateur landscaper, helped him come up with a design. They arranged hoses on the bare ground to come up with a yin-yang-type design for the compact backyard, separated by a rocky dry riverbed that curves between the two sides, capturing rainwater and runoff. He’s added a patch of AstroTurf to ensure an even green color year-round and then surrounded it with plants native to California, Australia and South Africa.

A red and yellow striped Chinese lantern flower (Physalis alkekengi) hangs upside down.

“It’s not really a garden; it’s a setting,” Esparza said. “I wanted it to be like a room. We’ve actually had parties where we brought our furniture from in the house to outside and created kind of a living room outdoors.”

There’s almost every shade of green in this garden, with accent colors mostly in white or orange, such as the wisteria that covers his pergola with white blooms two weeks a year and the Rise and Shine redbud ( Cercis canadensis ‘JN15’ ) whose yellow and orange leaves seem lit from within when they’re hit by the sun. There are pathways throughout the garden and lots of little surprises — like tree trunks sprouting huge staghorn ferns, the grinding stone that belonged to his grandmother, an apricot-colored climbing rose by the gate and a Banksia ericifolia with its gold flowers growing up like corn cobs from the feathery stems.

Esparza still works full-time, doing inventory at the Port of Long Beach, so his mom, Libby Esparza, assists in weeding and sweeping. But the biggest maintenance job is keeping all his thriving plants from getting too big and overwhelming other aspects of the garden, such as the huge stones he carefully chose as accents or the pergola with its hanging, removable wall panels and Chinese Chippendale design.

This is Esparza’s 13th year opening his garden for the Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour , and he enjoys showing it off, especially for this cause.

Rocks and pebbles create a narrow dry riverbed next to a footpath.

Mary Lou Heard went through a terrible divorce in the 1970s, when she moved to Southern California. She was hospitalized with depression for a brief period and credited her work with plants as helping her recover, said foundation President Jennifer McInteer. She had a love for cottage gardens and started growing plants in her apartment and selling them at the Orange County Market Place swap meet until she was able to open her now-legendary nursery, Heard’s Country Gardens in Westminster.

Heard started the tours in 1994 to help support the Sheepfold crisis center for women, McInteer said, and when she closed her nursery in 2002, shortly before she died from cancer, the Mary Lou Heard Foundation continued her work.

“Mary dreamed of a garden tour by and for real people. Some gardens are just unattainable for most of us. But these are real gardens created by regular people who love gardening,” McInteer said.

VERMONT KNOLLS - LOS ANGELES, CA - MONDAY, MARCH 07, 2022 - Home and garden of Brandy Williams, an African American owner of Garden Butterfly, a landscaping business she operates from her home in South Central LA. (Ricardo DeAratanha / Los Angeles Times)

Her stylish gardens are filled with native plants. Come visit one in South L.A.

Brandy Williams is an artistic landscaper who paints with plants — one luscious succulent at a time — through her business Garden Butterfly.

March 10, 2022

“We have seven well-meaning volunteers who make the decisions, and a lot of them are, ‘Well, Mary Lou did it that way, so we should too.’ There’s no tickets to the tours. We print out a list of the gardens, distribute them to nurseries and online, and then put a donation jar at each garden. We normally raise $17,000 to $26,000, and we hope this year can be a banner year. ... I’m aiming for $50,000!”

Most of the other garden tours below have admission fees but all are designed as fundraisers to support causes in their community. Note that almost all of these gardens are at private residences, so pets are generally not welcome, and some property owners may request that visitors wear masks, so come prepared.
