10 things to do in Riva del Garda

Feel good and relax in the pearl of lake garda.

Riva del Garda, the main town of Garda Trentino , is located 50 km away from the city of Trento. If you arrive by car from the A22 Brenner motorway, you can exit at Rovereto Sud and follow the direction towards Lake Garda. If you’re traveling by train, get off at Rovereto station and, from there, you can continue on public transport, which connects it to the lake.

The charm of the lakefront and the Mediterranean climate give Riva del Garda the air of Saint-Tropez-like Lake Garda. After a walk or a bike ride, this area of Trentino delights you at the table: extra virgin olive oil, very delicate freshwater fish and Torbole broccoli, a Slow Food Listed Product.

Below we suggest what to do in Riva del Garda in 10 quick and practical points !

Stroll in the historic centre

Riva del Garda is the pearl of Lake Garda . Its small historic centre has many points of interest, and it is really pleasant to stroll through its streets. We recommend a stop in one of the small bars on Piazza 3 Novembre, the beautiful main square overlooking the port.

Climb to the Bastion

Climb to the Bastion

The Bastion of Riva is a Venetian tower, built by the Most Serene Republic between 1507 and 1508 above the village of Riva. You can reach it in about 20 minutes on foot from the centre, or by means of a comfortable and fast panoramic lift. Up there, you can enjoy a unique view and a pleasant break at a bar-restaurant.

Riva del Garda is also called “the jewel of Lake Garda”. Lemon trees, palm trees as well as bay trees are very characteristic for this village at the lake shore. Riva del Garda represents the junction between north and south of Lake Garda. This is also where the Gruppo di Brenta, a mountain massif, begins. This mountain chain offers challenging fixed rope routes.

Boasting a number of lovely bays and ports, Riva del Garda is a popular venue for windsurfers and sailors alike. With the Pelèr blowing from the north and the Ora from the south it is a great spot for all kind of water sports.

However, lovers of culture can look forward to the historical palazzi in the inner city, dating back to a time when the Venetians were reigning the area. The “Rocca di Riva” castle originates in the year 1124 and is completely surrounded by water. Today it houses the urban museum and a picture gallery called “pinacoteca”.

Riva del Garda: things to see and to do

admin

  • March 10, 2022
  • The Lake Villages

Welcome to Riva, the northernmost town on Lake Garda! Known as the pearl of Lake Garda, Riva del Garda is one of the most charming towns you can encounter on its shores. Located in the northern part of the lake, the town belongs to the province of Trento and enjoys a unique mountain landscape . Ready to discover what are the unmissable things to see and do in Riva del Garda?

Let’s start by exploring its territory: on the western side it is protected by Mount Rocchetta , while the eastern side is affected by the presence of Mount Baldo . Its peculiarity lies precisely in the possibility of enjoying a lake and mountain landscape at the same time. This characteristic makes it one of the most popular destinations for nature lovers.

There are many accommodation facilities in Riva del Garda, about 150 including B&B, flats, hotels, campsites and residences. In a breathtaking setting, these facilities offer the utmost in comfort and relaxation, combined with warm, familiar hospitality.

RIva is not only one of the most beautiful places to visit on Lake Garda. The heterogeneous conformation of the territory combined with the presence of the lake also offer the possibility of practising a multitude of sports.

tourist information centre riva del garda

Cycling, rowing, sailing, trekking, windsurfing, yoga and mountain biking are some of the sports you can try once you are in Riva. Whether you are a beginner or an expert matters little. Activities are designed for all levels.

For lovers of culture and history , Riva del Garda is an important site of interest. The numerous artistic and architectural works bear witness to its rich past. The R occa, the Circular Bastion and the Apponale Tower are some of the examples, which we will explore in more detail shortly. To complete the circle, there are also a series of historical paths that represent an interesting opportunity for those who love to dive into the past.

If these are the premises, selecting which are the 3 things to see and the 3 things to do in Riva del Garda is really complex and reductive. However, I will try to briefly outline which stops you really cannot miss on your itinerary in this splendid resort. First, however, I will explain how to get there.

How to reach Riva del Garda

  • By car. From Verona , follow the Brennero motorway as far as the Rovereto Sud exit, then continue along the state road to Riva. From Brescia , you can drive along the Gardesana Occidentale until you reach the town.
  • By train . You can get to Rovereto Railway Station, and then take the B332 bus line.
  • By bus. From the Gardesana Orientale with line 484 ATV , from the Gardesana Occidentale with line LN027 ARRIVA.

YOUR GUIDE ON WHAT TO SEE AND TO DO IN RIVA DEL GARDA

The itinerary I propose will allow you to fully experience this 5-star place and take home a wonderful memory.

Things to see in Riva del Garda

Old town centre, rocca and the mag, lakefront and the beaches, things to do in riva del garda, the ponale path, the varone waterfall cave park, canale di tenno and arco, briefly, among the things to do and see in riva, we will start with the old town, rich in history and interesting architectural and artistic beauties..

Riva del Garda: things to see and to do

One of them is the Apponale Tower, symbol of the town, on the eastern side of Piazza III Novembre . This is followed by the circular Bastion , known as the ‘Rocchetta’, and the Morocco quarter , a picturesque and almost secret part of the town centre.

You cannot miss a visit to the MAG (Museo dell’Alto Garda), for which I recommend you take advantage of grey or rainy days. On sunny days you can stroll along the lakefront. With its wide beaches and crystal-clear water in which the mountains are reflected , it offers splendid views. We will travel along the Ponale Path , the most evocative of those in Riva del Garda, which connects the town to the Ledro Valley.

In addition, you cannot miss a visit to the characteristic Parco Grotta Cascate del Varone (Varone Waterfall Cave Park), just a few steps from Riva. Finally, continuing in the direction of Tenno, we will encounter the picturesque Borgo Canale di Tenno and the lake of the same name, whose water will surprise you with its turquoise colour. To conclude, we will also take a peek at the Borgo di Arco.

To discover in detail the points of interest of this place to visit on Lake Garda continue reading the article and be inspired!

Five places to see in Riva del Garda

THE OLD TOWN CENTRE

First one of the things to see in Riva del Garda that I would suggest is undoubtedly the old town centre. In fact, the town is a small jewel set between the lake and the mountains, rich in history and evidence of the past. I recommend you take a half-day off to fully enjoy its beauty and discover even its most hidden corners.

One of the symbols of Riva is undoubtedly the Apponale Tower , located in Piazza III Novembre and built in 1555. At 34 metres high, the tower served as a strategic and control point for the square and the port. It was renovated in the 20th century and made accessible to visitors by the complete restoration in 2002.

If the climbs don’t frighten you, you can reach the top by climbing the 165 steps of the staircase inside, you will enjoy a breathtaking view! On the ground, remember to look up to the sky and look for the little angel placed on its top, it is the symbol of the city.

If you want to discover more about this place on Lake Garda continue reading the article, you won’t regret it!

Five places to see in Riva del Garda

The Apponale Tower is located on the east side of Piazza III Novembre , the main square of Riva del Garda and the hub of the town. Under the arcades are the Palazzi Pretorio and the Palazzi del Municipio . In this square you can take a moment to admire the special view of the lake and, why not, sip an aperitif with a view. Continuing your visit through the streets of the centre you will certainly come to the “Morocco’ district” . The name of this area is reminiscent of the dialect word ‘marocche’, the boulders in which its houses were built. As you will imagine, it is a very picturesque place that will allow you to immerse yourself in a past made up of working-class houses and lived life.

Five places to see in Riva del Garda

THE FORTRESS AND THE MAG

Second stop not to be missed is the MAG (Museo dell’Alto Garda), inside the Rocca, the medieval castle just 350 m from Piazza III Novembre. The main seat of the museum is in Riva, while a second section is in Arco , at the Galleria Civica ‘G. Segantini’.

The prince-bishop of Trento built the medieval fortress in 1124 to protect the town of Riva. Its history is rather troubled: restored by the Scaligeri in the 14th century, it was plundered several times in the Venetian period during the clashes with the Visconti.  Passing under Habsburg rule, it became an army barracks in the 19th century. Only in the 20th century was it reborn as a museum.

If you want to know some details about this place on Lake Garda, don’t miss the next few lines!

THE LAKEFRONT AND THE BEACHES

Today the castle is one of the symbols of the town. The crystal-clear waters and the small boats surrounding it make the location very picturesque. Cross its small bridge and let yourself be enveloped by the magic of this place, breathe in culture and take your time to admire the exhibits.

The museum is divided into three sections, respectively the Picture Gallery, with paintings of the Gardesana border art from the period between the 14th and 19th centuries, an archaeology section and a history section.

To make your experience even more unforgettable, I recommend climbing its main tower, the Mastio . From here you can enjoy the wonderful view of the city and the lake. Don’t forget to have a camera with you to take home some spectacular shots!

tourist information centre riva del garda

THIRD THING TO SEE IN RIVA DEL GARDA: LAKEFRONT AND BEACHES

Once your curiosity has been satisfied and you have had your fill of culture, I recommend a bit of healthy relaxation . For this reason, the third of the five places to see in Riva del Garda that I suggest is the lakefront with its adjacent beaches. In particular, I recommend a stop at Spiaggia Sabbioni and Spiaggia dei Pini , known as ‘Purfina’.

This area of Riva will amaze you with the incredible care taken over the vegetation. The colourful flowers create an incredible chromatic harmony, a real treat for the eyes! Although the beaches are usually covered with pebbles, the extensive green areas and numerous trees provide large areas and pleasant shady spots in which to stretch out.

The crystal-clear waters in which you can dive for a refreshing swim, combined with the setting created by the mountains, make this place almost surreal. Here time stands still and the only thing to do is to let yourself be lulled by the sound of the lake’s waves. Don’t let the grey days frighten you, these beaches look even more impressive with a few clouds in the sky!

Ponale path

Among the things to do and to see in Riva del Garda there is undoubtedly the Ponale Path , one of the best-loved in all of Europe. In fact, the path connects Riva del Garda with Val di Ledro and offers the chance to admire a truly incredible landscape.

Enclosed between the rock of the mountain and the waters of the lake, this road was built starting in the 19th century. Discontinued about 20 years ago, it only became a foot and cycle path in 2004. Today the path is about 20 km, including round trip.

Ponale path

Upon reaching Val di Ledro, it is possible to continue on to the Statue of the Madonna on the panoramic terrace, from which there is a breathtaking view. The route can continue towards the centre of Pré di Ledro, Molina, Lake Ledro or the Pile-Dwelling Museum , the choice is yours!

If the length of the trail leaves you puzzled, know that it is a route for everyone, which can be covered on foot, by bicycle or mountain bike. You can also decide to shorten it by choosing the shorter but equally beautiful loop trail.

PARCO GROTTA CASCATE DEL VARONE

About 3 km from the city center is the Varone Waterfalls Cave Park . The waterfall within the park is considered a geological rarity . It is a narrow valley eroded into the rock dating back some 20,000 years, unbelievable, isn’t it?

The park is characterized by the presence of two caves that offer the possibility of admiring the waterfall from two different perspectives, an upper and a lower one. In both cases, the cave is accessed via a footbridge and then a few meters from the waterfall. The colored lights that illuminate the water make the place truly magical and the visit very evocative. Between one cave and the next you also have the opportunity to enjoy the botanical park and have a pleasant picnic in the picnic areas.

My advice is to take a k-way with you, it will protect you from the splashing waterfall and prevent you from leaving the cave soaking wet! The park is also a pet-friendly place, so don’t hesitate to have your four-legged friend accompany you! It will be a fun and refreshing experience for him too (provided he loves water, of course).

tourist information centre riva del garda

V ILLAGES TO VISIT: ARCO AND CANALE DI TENNO

Continuing uphill in the direction of Tenno , you can also visit the Borgo di Canale di Tenno. The medieval village is located at 600 m above sea level and is recognised by the association ‘I borghi più belli d’Italia’ (Italy’s most beautiful villages).  Get lost in its narrow streets and let yourself be enchanted by the exposed stone buildings for which it seems as if time never passes. Visit the Museum of the tools of rural life and the House of the Artists , it will be a very special experience.

If you are lucky enough to be in the area in the second week of August, I recommend attending ‘Rustico Medioevo’ . This is an event where culture and gastronomy come together in a merry dance to offer a unique and unforgettable experience. In December and January, on the other hand, don’t miss the characteristic Christmas markets , which create a dreamlike atmosphere and give you a true fairytale experience.

An unmissable place on the itinerary is undoubtedly Lake Tenno , 14 km from Riva del Garda. Treat yourself to a regenerating walk around the lake (about 40 minutes) or a refreshing dip in its crystal-clear turquoise waters . Even this lake, although small, will give you moments of great peace and relaxation.

Finally, among the surroundings of this place to visit on Lake Garda hides another fascinating village… I am talking about Arco!

Only 20 minutes by car from Riva del Garda, lies the village of Arco . Surrounded by greenery, the village branches off into cobbled alleys and historic buildings, such as the Palazzo Marchetti . The real thing to do here is to visit the imposing Castle, which watches over the village from above. With a walk of about 20-30 minutes you will reach the Renghena Tower and enjoy a spectacular view.

Between steps and small paths you will be able to admire it from top to bottom. Back in the historic centre, I suggest you enjoy some peace and quiet walking in the Parco Arboreto.

If the things to see and to do in Riva del Garda were not enough to convince you, let me tell you about the wonderful annual events.

EVENTS in Riva del Garda

The Notte di Fiaba (Fairy Tale Night) is a not-to-be-missed event that greets the summer by transforming the town into a place of fantasy for the imagination of young and old.

If you are a bike enthusiast, the FSA BIKE Festival in Riva will captivate you with three days of exhibitions, presentations and exciting sporting competitions focusing on MTB, eMTB, lifestyle and more.

The X Strada event is ideal for an alternative Ferragosto evening in the streets of Riva animated until midnight by live music and contagious merriment.

Having reached this point, I hope that Riva del Garda has become one of the destinations to visit on your next trip. I assure you that it will be a very pleasant discovery!

Rocca di Riva is one of the most important sights in Riva del Garda. This is a medieval fortress that stands on a small artificial island in the historic centre. The fortress is surrounded by water on all sides and a small bridge leads to its entrance.

Rocca di Riva was built in 1124 in order to protect the town’s important port. When Riva del Garda was taken over by the Scaliger dynasty of Verona in the 14th century, the fortress was enlarged and a deep moat was excavated around it. In the 15th century, Riva del Garda was annexed to the territories of the Republic of Venice. The town and its fortress bore witness to the battles between Venice and the Duchy of Milan.

By the 16th century, Rocca di Riva had changed completely its purpose and had become a residence. First, it hosted the Prince-Bishops of Trento  and then private individuals. Three centuries later, the fortress was turned into army barracks.

Nowadays, Rocca di Riva houses the Museum of Upper Garda . It has interesting archaeological, historical, and art sections introducing you to the history and the traditions of  Trentino  – the autonomous Northern Italian province of which Riva del Garda is part.

Walking through the historic centre of Riva del Garda, soon you will find yourself in front of the town’s centuries-old fortress. It enjoys a central lakefront position. Palm trees and fountains are strategically placed around its moat. All in all, Rocca di Riva is a must-see on the northern tip of Lake Garda in Italy.

2. Go for a Walk Through the Historic Centre of Riva del Garda, Italy

Piazza III Novembre with the Palazzo Municipale - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Riva del Garda has an elegant historic centre where Italian and Austrian influences meet and mix. Throughout history, the town has been ruled by many different powers – from the Scaligers of Verona and then the Republic of Venice to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As you can imagine, this has created a melting pot of architectural styles. The historic centre of Riva del Garda is the best place to see how it all has come together organically.

Surrounded by tall, jagged mountains and with streets flanked by multi-storey houses painted in yellow, ochre, and green, the historic centre here is a lively place. As you walk around, little details stand out. A historic coat of arms attached to a centuries-old wall, a frescoed top floor of a building, a balcony with countless pots of plants and flowering shrubs. The mountain tops peek at the end of each street. Water trickles and gushes from the town’s many fountains. The hubbub of people is never-ending. Locals and visitors pop in and out of the many shops and eateries, cross the large sunlit squares, head to the nearby beaches.

It’s all so beautiful. Quite idyllic, really. Especially on a sunny day!

Here are some of the most interesting sights and places to see in the historic centre of Riva del Garda:

  • Terme Romane – excavated remnants of the thermal baths that the Romans had built here in the 1st century AD.
  • Quartiere del Marocco – this is the oldest preserved part of the historic centre of Riva del Garda. It dates back to the Middle Ages. The large houses here stand against the slopes of Mount Rocchetta. The name – Marocco – comes from the local word for pebble, stone or rock.
  • Palazzo Municipale – built towards the end of the 15th century, this has been Riva del Garda’s civic assembly hall since 1492. You will find this large and imposing historic building on the main Piazza III Novembre. Fragments of the frescoes that once decorated the exterior of the palazzo can still be seen on its facade today.
  • Hydroelectrical Power Plant – open for guided visits, this is an enormous facility housed in a monumental building. Erected in the 1920s, it flanks the town’s historic harbour and it is one of the very first things that you see as you drive into Riva del Garda from the nearby town of Limone sul Garda.

3. Spend Time at the Pretty Squares of Riva del Garda, Italy

Piazza della Erbe - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Riva del Garda is dotted with pretty squares that are at the centre of the town’s social life. They are surrounded by historic buildings and lively eateries, buzzing with people and activity all throughout the day.

Sitting for a coffee or a meal at one of Riva del Garda’s squares is a very pleasant thing to do. You can engage in some people-watching, admire the surrounding architecture, relax, and enjoy the town’s verve.

Here are some of the most beautiful squares here to see for yourself:

  • Piazza III Novembre – a beautiful sunlit square in the heart of the historic centre. Surrounded by lavish hotels, historic buildings, and busy restaurants, it’s a lovely place to sit and take it all in. In the past, this is where the town’s fairs were held four times a year. The 34 meters high Torre Aponale dominates the square. Opposite it, you will see the historic Palazzo Municipale.
  • Piazza delle Erbe – a large and beautiful square in the style of the Italian Renaissance piazzas. It has a circular fountain at its heart. The square was built after the First World War. It replaced a group of houses that had been heavily bombed and had to be completely demolished.
  • Piazza Marocco – this ancient square stands in the heart of the oldest part of the historic centre of Riva del Garda. It is thought that a castle or a fortification must have existed here in the early Middle Ages. Look around to see fragments of the town’s ancient defensive walls that nowadays have been incorporated into the facades of the local houses.
  • Piazza Cavour – a large square next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. In the past, it was used for civic assemblies and hosted the town’s market.
  • Piazza Catena – this rectangular square flanks Riva del Garda’s historic harbour. Head to it if you want to take the ferry to a nearby lakefront town.

4. Visit the Churches in Riva del Garda, Italy

The Baroque Church of S. Maria Inviolata - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

There are several interesting from a historic and architectural point of view churches in Riva del Garda. Visiting them will give you a better understanding of the history of this pretty town. Inside, you can also see important works by local artists.

Here are some of the most beautiful churches in Riva del Garda:

  • Church of Santa Maria Inviolata – built in 1603, this is considered to be the most important Baroque church in the whole of Trentino . Its frescoed and stuccoed vault is a sight to behold. The altarpieces are by Palma the Younger – one of the most famous exponents of the Venetian School.
  • Church of Santa Maria Assunta – an imposing Baroque church built in 1728 on the site of a medieval church in the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles.
  • Church of St. Roch – this church was built in the 16th century. It fulfilled an oath made by the inhabitants of Riva del Garda during a devastating bout of the plague in 1512. Richly stuccoed and decorated, the nave of the church was hit by a bomb during the First World War. Nowadays only its apse survives.

5. See the Historic Gates of Riva del Garda, Italy

Inside Porta San Giuseppe - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Centuries ago, a strong defensive wall used to surround Riva del Garda. Walking around the town’s historic centre, you will see surviving fragments from it and several tall and sturdy gates.

These are their names and the stories behind them:

  • Porta Bruciata – this is a vault that connects Piazza San Rocco with Piazza III Novembre. Originally, it was a gate in the ancient defensive wall. In 1475, the gate was incorporated into the building that joins the Palazzo Municipale and the Palazzo Pretorio. Its name – the Burned Gate – references a fire of which not much else is known.
  • Porta di San Marco – originally built during the Scaliger dynasty’s dominion of Riva del Garda, this large and imposing gate was then modified during the Venetian rule of the area.
  • Porta di San Michele – it stands at the end of the large Via Roma which connects the Church of Santa Maria Inviolata to Riva del Garda’s historic centre. Back in the 13th century, this gate was known as Porta d’Arco, as it’s orientated towards the nearby town of Arco. In the 19th century, it was subjected to a significant reconstruction by the then-mayor of the town.
  • Porta di San Giuseppe – this was once one of the oldest churches in town. The Church of San Giuseppe (also known as the Church of Disciplini) was erected in the 16th century at the spot where a hermit had lived in the 13th century. It had marble altars and many works of art. In recent times, the church was deconsecrated and hollowed. Nowadays, it serves as a pedestrian crossing – a sort of tunnel on a crossroads in the historic centre of Riva del Garda. Its facade is preserved and inside you can see the church’s original pillars and a small, quite damaged fresco.

6. Go for a Walk around the Two Harbours of Riva del Garda, Italy

The harbour with pedalos and the Hydroelectric station - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Centuries ago, Riva del Garda had one of the most important harbours on Lake Garda. A constant stream of boats brought goods and wares from the towns of Desenzano , Torbole, and Lazise. Wool, wood, cereals, ceramics, and even cattle. For hundreds of years, the flow of goods never stopped.

The harbour stands adjacent to the historic centre of Riva del Garda. Nowadays, it’s a great place to go for a walk, to catch the ferry to another lakefront town, and to hire a pedalo.

Further away from the historic centre and just past Riva del Garda’s beaches, you can also visit Porto San Nicolo’. Dozens of sailing boats moor here. If you want to rent a boat or a yacht for the day, this is the place to head to.

7. Get a Bird’s-Eye View of Riva del Garda, Italy

Bastione and funicular - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

If you are after bird’s-eye views, Riva del Garda more than delivers. There are several spots in and around town offering breathtaking panoramas from above. Here they are:

  • Torre Apponale – this is the 13th-century clocktower that dominates the skyline of Riva del Garda. Scale its 165 steps to admire panoramic views of the town and the lake from a height of 34 m.
  • Bastione and Funicular – the Bastione is an early-16th century fort that stands above Riva del Garda on the slopes of Mount Rocchetta. A brand new panoramic lift transports you from the town’s historic centre up to the fort. The views are breathtaking and you can continue to enjoy them from the bar and restaurant which nowadays operate inside the Bastione.
  • Mount Brione – this is the rocky hill that separates Riva del Garda from the neighbouring town of Torbole. A hiking path leads from Riva del Garda to the summit of Mount Brione. Up there you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views of Lake Garda.
  • Chapel of Santa Barbara – this is a tiny chapel built in 1925 at a height of 620 m. You can glimpse it from the historic centre. It’s like a dot on the lush slopes of Mount Rocchetta. You can hike to it, too in about an hour. The path first goes up to Bastione. So, if you prefer, you can take the funicular up to it and save yourself some of the uphill walking.

8. Go to the Beach in Riva del Garda, Italy

The entrance of the Spiaggia dei Olivi - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Lake Garda is a great place to go to the beach on a hot summer day. Riva del Garda is home to some of the nicest lake beaches for you to top your tan at.

Here are some of the most popular beaches in and around this lovely lakefront town:

  • Spiaggia dei Sabbioni – this is a free beach with grassy and pebbly areas. It has a kids’ playground and a large park next to it. There are bars, a restaurant, showers, and toilets.
  • Spiaggia dei Pini – this is a very popular local beach that attracts the young and hip crowd.
  • Spiaggia di Navene – this is one of my most favourite beaches on Lake Garda. It’s about 13 km away down the road from Riva del Garda. This is a pebbly beach next to the large sailing club Fraglia Vela Malcesine. It has a small olive grove right next to it, a playground for the kids to run around, a couple of benches and picnic tables, a swim raft challenging you to swim across to it, a pair of resident swans and a gaggle of ducks.

Most beaches around Lake Garda are covered in pebbles.  Suitable  beach shoes  both in and out of the water are recommended. Also, please, exercise caution when swimming here. As with every lake and body of water, it’s important to be careful and use common sense. Especially, as the water can get very deep very quickly at Lake Garda’s beaches.

Reptiland - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Reptiland is a permanent exhibition of reptiles from all around the world. It is housed in a splendid historic building opposite Rocca di Riva in the town’s historic centre.

If herpetology is among your interests, Reptiland is a great place to visit. Personally, my interests don’t stretch that far. My family volunteered to visit Reptiland without me. They spent about an hour there and told me it was interesting to see the reptiles that are native to Trentino .

11. Marvel at the Waterfall in a Cave Near Riva del Garda, Italy

Inside Cascate del Varone - Riva del Garda, Trentino - www.rossiwrites.com

On the outskirts of Riva del Garda, you can visit the Varone Waterfall. Famously, this is a waterfall inside a cave! In other words, this is a mass of water that falls with great thunder through a 98-m high canyon.

You start your visit by walking inside the Lower Cave. A sinuous boardwalk is affixed to the rough rocky walls. Tiny droplets mist up the air. If you stand close to the railings, the water splashes you. For added effect, coloured lights tinge the constant stream in different shades.

The next stage of the experience is to walk up to the Upper Cave. A wide paved path snakes up the face of the hill taking you higher and higher above the valley below. Tall rugged mountains line up the horizon. The blue waters of Lake Garda glisten in the sun. The stunning views are complemented by the dozens of flowers, shrubs, and trees that have been planted along the path. It’s a veritable botanical garden!

At the end of the path is the much smaller Upper Cave. Inside it, there is a small platform. Standing on it, you can watch the waterfall thunder through the mountain. A local legend talks about a black horse that seems to surge forward from the waterfall. It sounds mad but just as my eyes adjusted from the bright light outside to the eternally dim atmosphere of the cave, I saw the well-defined head of a black horse appear in the sheet of water and rush towards me. Call it an optical illusion, if you like. I didn’t stop to have a good look or think it through. I just ran outside back into the light.

The Varone Waterfall is also close to the town of Arco, Lake Tenno, the medieval village of Canale’ di Tenno, and the archaeological site on Mount San Martino. You can visit them all in a day. Alternatively, you can drive to Lake Ledro after your visit to the waterfall.

Monte Baldo is an Alpine mountain chain that shelters the eastern shores of Lake Garda. Known as the Garden of Europe for its remarkable botanical diversity, the mountain is crisscrossed by hiking paths and it is a delight to explore.

The Funivia Monte Baldo gives you a chance to quickly get to the top of the mountain. This is a rotating cable car the ground station of which is less than 25 mins away from Riva del Garda. It stands right next to the lakefront town of Malcesine and it has a spacious car park adjacent to it. The ride is truly spectacular as it opens panoramic views over the whole northern half of Lake Garda.

Taking the cable car is one of the very best things to do around the lake. It’s a very emotional experience that leaves you with impressions to last you a lifetime. Once up there, you can spend some time just taking it all in, you can go for a hike, or – in winter – you can ski and snowboard, too!

Bear in mind that Monte Baldo’s cable car is a very popular attraction. During the high season, long queues tend to form. If you only have a limited amount of time to spend at Lake Garda, either buy your ticket online in advance or head to the ticket office as soon as possible to book your time slot.

The journey to the top of Monte Baldo is split in two. The first cable car takes you to the station of San Michele at a height of 560 m. The views of the town of Malcesine as the cable car smoothly glides uphill are soul-inspiring. You feel like you are flying over the red rooftops which slowly grow smaller and smaller and the enormous expanse of Lake Garda fills the panorama with its sparkling blue colours.

At San Michele, you take a second cable car that is bigger and even swisher than the first. While you wait, an open-air platform provides even more stunning views. Board the second cable car and don’t worry about trying to bag the best spot inside for panoramic views and pictures. The cable car slowly swivels around its axe providing a 360 degrees view thus giving everyone on board the chance to enjoy it from all possible angles.

After a short but exhilarating ascent, the cable car stops at a modern terminal at a height of 1760 m. In summer, people go there to practice sports – hiking, paragliding, Nordic walking, and mountain biking – or simply to take in the beautiful views. In winter, you can ski, snowboard or sledge.

21. See Italy’s Shortest River Just Down the Road from Riva del Garda, Italy

Italy's shortest river Aril in Cassone near Malcesine, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Half an hour down the road from Riva del Garda, you can see Aril – officially, Italy’s shortest river. Only 175 m long, Aril runs through the small village of Cassone before flowing into Lake Garda – officially, Italy’s largest lake.

Visiting Aril is a great experience. The river runs fast and furious from its freshwater springs down to the lake. Along the way, it navigates a small weir and three bridges. The village of Cassone itself is pretty as a picture. It was actually painted by one of the most famous symbolist artists – Gustav Klimt (of ‘The Kiss’ fame).  His painting of Cassone was sold a few years ago for almost 27 million GBP!

Apart from the River Aril, in Cassone, you can also see the  Museum of the Lake . It preserves the memory of the local fishing traditions. The museum has two water reservoirs where you can see the typical for Lake Garda trouts, carps, and eels.

Have a look at this blog post for more information about the River Aril, Cassone, and what to do and see in their vicinity:

Riva del Garda, Italy: travel guide and places to visit near Riva del Garda

Photo of Riva del Garda

Visit Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda is situated at the northern end of Lake Garda in northern Italy. The town is among the highlights of a visit to the lake, with a fortress dominating the lakefront area and an interesting old town to explore of narrow cobbled streets and pretty shady squares.

Because of the quality of its climate and some first-rate sanatoriums Riva del Garda has been visited by many literary personalities including Goethe, Nietzsche, Mann, Kafka and others.

Exploring Riva del Garda

Italy This Way review: the historic part of Riva del Garda with the old town and harbour area is quite compact and easy to explore, and also very picturesque. The town behind is now quite extensive with numerous apartment blocks but these are also quite pleasant and certainly don't detract from the town

Your visit to Riva del Garda can start from the 'Rocca', a fortress on the waterfront that is surrounded by a moat, now used by small boats. This fortress was founded by the Scaligeri lords from Verona in the 14th century then restructured by the Venetians in the 15th century and also later by the Lords from Trento.

Fortress and moat in Riva del Garda

The structure of the fort, with a quadrangular plan, angular towers and courtyards is similar to the other Rocca founded by the Scaligeri family in the 13th century at Sirmione. The fortress is entered by the original drawbridge and is now home to the impressive collections of the Civic Library and the Civic Museum.

From here you can take a stroll around the port area of Riva del Garda, a lovely place for a promenade, and enjoy a coffee and an ice-cream. As well as the pastel coloured houses overlooking the lake you can also see the ruins of the fortifications that were erected in the Middle Ages to defend the port.

A visit to the Apponale Tower, the 13th century clocktower in the centre of the harbour area, is also interesting with the view from the top of the tower the main attraction, and only about 160 steps to reach it!.

In front of the harbour is the area where boat trips depart to explore other resorts around Lake Garda.

You should make sure you see the two palaces in Riva del Garda that were inspired by Venetian architecture: the Palazzo Pretorio and the Palazzo Vecchio. Continuing on from here you arrive in the Piazza San Rocco which has many monuments and palaces of both medieval and contemporary style due to the restructuring of the town centre during the last century.

You can now explore the the Città Vecchia (Old Town), the historical centre of Riva del Garda where you can see some interesting baroque style palaces. Enter the old town by the "Porta-Torre of San Marco" or the "Porta-Torre of San Michele". There is a baroque style church in this part of Riva del Garda called the Church of Santa Maria Assunta that has a typical baroque interior.

Other buildings in both the Renaissance and Baroque styles can be seen along the "Viale Roma" including the most impressive church in Riva del Garda, the Church of the Virgin, on the northern edge of the old town. Little more than one room with a dome, the interior is flooded with light and resplendent with marble columns and paintings on every surface.

Your tour of the town can continue with a walk on the "Lungomare Brescia", an area on the edge of the lake created by restructuring some ancient structures and dating from the 19th century and the First World War. This lakefront walk also incorporates a beach area, and a park. The beach is of pebbles and very nice so it does get quite busy.

Colourful houses in Riva del Garda town centre

Church of Santa Barbera and the Bastion

The most popular excurson in the town is also the most challenging. If you look at the mountain behind the electricity generating station near the harbour, you can see the small Church of Santa Barbera high on the hillside. The church was built in the 1930s by the workers who were installing the pipes for the electricity station ad wanted to have a place to pray.

To reach the church is about a three hour walk, and as you can tell when you look at it there is a lot of walking uphill involved! You will need sturdy shoes and plenty of water, but the views when you get there are amazing!

If that is a bit too challenging, there is a different walk that leads to an ancient fortress called the Bastion which is much easier but also has very nice views.

Brief history of Riva del Garda

In Roman times the town was a centre of great importance due to its location on the shores of Lake Garda and because of the closeness of the Sarca River.

In the middle ages Riva del Garda was a fiefdom of the Bishop of Trento, but control of the city was often contested by other Italians such as the Venetians, the Scaligeri from Verona and the Visconti from Milan, as well as by foreign powers including the Tyrolese, Austrian, Germans and French. Despite these many challenges the city always retained a certain autonomy.

Having started the 20th century as part of the Austrian Hapsburg Empire, Riva del Garda became part of Italy after World War 1 and part of Germany during World War 2. It is now firmly established in Italy, although the Austrian-German heritage can be seen in the architecture of the town.

Other attractions in and around Riva del Garda

A short walk from Riva del Garda takes you to the Varone Waterfall, about 100 metres high and well worth the walk. Other particular local highlights include Lake Tenno and Lake di Ledro, both of which are in scenic positions surrounded by mountains.

You might not guess given the location of Riva del Garda but it also has a very popular windsurfing centre based at nearby Torbole , with a reliable wind from the mountains blowing out across the lake.

The other resorts around the shores of Lake Garda can also be reached using the ferries that regularly cross the lake, although from here it is a long boat journey to reach those at the southern end of the lake such as Sirmione so Riva del Garda is best used as place to stay when visiting the north of the lake, but not the south.

Heading north from here and away from the lake you reach Arco and Canale, picturesque villages and a good place to start more adventurous excursions into the dolomites. Further north you reach the mountains and winter ski resorts such as Madonna di Campiglio .

Spectacular Mediterranean scenery rises from the waters and up over steep mountain slopes to the blue heavens, all with a promise of the great outdoors. Sporting adventures and pleasurable experiences here vie for the favour of guests, as Bella Italia can always produce culinary delights in villages that bear witness to a lively culture.

Benvenuti nel Garda Trentino.

tourist information centre riva del garda

The scents in Riva del Garda are of olive oil, lemon juice, bay leaves and fine wine, mountain traditions and Mediterranean ease.

Nestling between Lake Garda and the Brenta Dolomites, Riva del Garda is the very epicentre of Garda Trentino

A ruined castle perches on a steep rock directly above the town of Arco, whose historic centre lies like a semicircle around the slopes of the castle mount. Perhaps it was not mere chance that led to its name Arco – “arch” or “bow” in English.

And suddenly the rock faces fall away and reveal the view that stretches way over the blue of Lake Garda. Torbole sul Garda has found its place on the shore, at the foot of Monte Baldo and, now as always, knows how to captivate guests with its charm.

Located between the Lake Garda and the the Valle del Chiese, the Ledro Valley is a land bound north and south by spectacular peaks that soar to heights of over 2,000 metres. This natural setting holds thirteen villages, each with a bewitching charm. The roofs of the houses rise up between fragrant woods and meadows or give colour to the shores of Lake Ledro.

Comano offers a placid succession of rural landscapes and the lively gurgling of the thermal spring at the foot of the silently spectacular Brenta Dolomites, an oasis of tranquillity and well-being that invites you to follow the rhythms of nature.

The Comano area encloses – just as a precious casket - Fiavé, Comano Terme, Bleggio Superiore, Stenico.

Up in the hills high above Riva del Garda, the village of Tenno perches between olive groves, vineyards and alpine rock formations. Facing south and nestling among spectacular plant life, this location always offers clear views as it proudly presents Lake Garda below.

One of the oldest municipalities in the Sarca Valley, Dro, lies between the three enchanting lakes of the Garda Trentino region – Lake Garda, Lake Cavedine and Lake Toblino. Slightly higher is Drena, a mountain village of prehistoric origin, shaped by Roman and Medieval influences.

The Valle dei Laghi is a subalpine lake district between Lake Garda and Trento that extends north of the village of Sarche, where visitors can embark on a spectacular journey through an enchanting watery landscape. Apart from its numerous lakes, the area is also known for the popular Vino Santo, not to mention its large number of grappa varieties.

A journey to Val di Gresta is always intentional. To reach it, you have to leave the main route running along the valley floor, winding up hairpin bends at the foot of Mount Stivo. Those who embark on this adventure are rewarded with a priceless sensation, as if they've stumbled upon a hidden realm where the myriad shades of green reign supreme.

Lake Garda, Italy: Travel & Tourist Information

Discover one of Italy’s finest holiday destinations

tourist information centre riva del garda

The beautiful lakeside towns around Lake Garda ( Lago di Garda ) have charmed foreign visitors for centuries. Even for the ancient Romans, the area was a luxury summer destination; in Sirmione and Desenzano you can visit ruins and mosaics that record their presence.

Lake Garda is located in the north-east of Italy, dividing the regions of Lombardy, the Veneto and Trentino Alto-Adige. The large lake is long and slim, stretching from north to south. The southern lakeshore is low, rolling land and fairly built-up. In contrast, the dramatic fjord-like northern end is surrounded by towering mountains and cliffs. Most of the lakeside towns are popular as holiday resorts; they differ in character but all are well-connected by boat services. More information on the various destinations can be read below.

Lake Garda holiday information

The towns around the lake, with the possible exception of workaday Peschiera, are all pretty, pleasant places to stay. If you’re faced with a dilemma choosing where to stay in the Lake Garda area, it’s advisable to consider what you may wish to do during your holiday. Most of your travelling is likely to be over the lake using one of the ferry services, or by road around the edge; either way, you could spend a lot of time travelling if you’re not handily located for your aims.

Get to Lake Garda

Ryanair fly to Brescia Airport, located 20km from Brescia, which is convenient for Lake Garda. The airport, also known as Montichiari or Gabriele D’Annunzio Airport, is a tiny, quiet one in the countryside. There are buses into Brescia, stopping by the railway station. Trains run from Brescia to Desenzano del Garda roughly every half hour. The journey takes less than twenty minutes. The airport is quite near Lake Garda, so you may find it worthwhile to negotiate with a taxi driver and get to Desenzano, the nearest lakeshore town, that way. You may even be lucky, as we were a few years ago, and find a direct bus service (free) to Desenzano del Garda for tourists with pre-booked hotels in the town. Your hotel should be able to provide you with the best and latest advice on public transport, although you should be prepared for offers to arrange a ‘transfer’ – only accept this if the price seems reasonable.

From Verona there are frequent trains to Desenzano del Garda from Verona Porta Nuova Station. Trains run every half hour and the journey takes twenty minutes.Alternatively a direct bus runs from Verona to Garda, Riva, Malcesine and other resorts – see our links panel on the right for timetables.

When it comes to public transport, the most appealing option is to take the many ferries that sail around the lake. There are various types of boat – enough to keep children entertained – running the different routes. Times and ports of call aren’t always the most convenient – it’s best to visit one of the information/ticket kiosks (by the lakeside jetties) on arrival and pick up a timetable, so that you can plan your activities and outings around the ferry schedules (and ensure you never end up stranded). There are a few fast services, which cost more money. If you have a ‘regular’ ferry ticket or an all-day ticket, you can pay a supplement to travel on one of these speedy services.

Buses link the towns along the lakeshore with one another and with nearby destinations. Buses in the Verona area are run by Azienda Provinciale Trasporti Verona (APTV). In the summer they run special tourist services, such as a handy link from Riva via other lake towns to Venice. The latest information is available from the local tourist information offices and from the bus company websites listed on the right.

Lake Garda destination information

It’s hard to go wrong when choosing where to stay around Lake Garda. Here are brief descriptions of the principal lakeside towns:

Sirmione is on the southern shore of Lake Garda, a pretty town near the end of a long promontory. Sirmione’s most striking feature is its moated castle, the Rocca Scaligera . Sirmione’s narrow medieval streets bustle with colour and life; the tiny town is a very popular holiday destination, and the summer months bring crowds. The setting of the small town is beautiful; and was praised in earlier days by the Roman poet Catullus. At the very tip of the peninsula green lizards scuttle over the extensive remains of a grand Roman villa (once believed to be Catullus’s villa). > More about Sirmione

Desenzano is primarily a practical destination. Transport is easy from Brescia Airport and by train from other parts of Italy. It’s easy to take a bus to Verona for day trips, and boat connections with other areas of Lake Garda are good, although it’s a long journey to Riva del Garda at the distant northern end of the lake. Desenzano is not as picture-book pretty as the lake’s smaller towns, and it has areas of modern development, but there is a lot in its favour. Around the harbour the streets are attractive, and from the castle up the hill (outdoor concerts in the summer) there’s a lovely view over the lake. Desenzano is more of a normal Italian town than a tourist toytown; in the evening you can join in the popular activity of promenading, the passeggiata . There are plenty of good restaurants, shops and busy bars. Recommended for those relying on public transport, those who want to see more of the area, and those who enjoy a realistic taste of Italian culture. > More about Desenzano del Garda

Limone sul Garda

Riva is at the northern end of Lake Garda, and is a pleasant tourist destination. The pretty public gardens by the waterfront have a quaint, middle-aged ‘resort’ air to them. The town is large enough to support a market and shops; although the lakeside area is packed mostly with gelaterie , cafes and restaurants aimed squarely at tourists. The waterfront is dominated by one of Garda’s fortresses, the Rocca , which contains the town’s museum. Steep wooded slopes tower above, with ruined towers emerging from the trees to tempt the energetic explorer. North of Riva, walking or driving excursions give access to some of the region’s most dramatic scenery. This includes a 287-ft waterfall at Varone, the remains of a Bronze Age settlement at Lake Ledro and the crags and fortifications of Castello d’Arco. > More about Riva del Garda

On the western shore, Gardone Riviera is a pretty tourist resort with a peaceful waterfront promenade dotted with benches. Two of the area’s most interesting tourist attractions are situated here: Gabriele d’Annunzio’s eccentric home and the tropical Andre Heller Botanic Garden. > More about Gardone Riviera

Malcesine is pretty, atmospheric, and packed with tourists. The town, on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, is charming, a maze of historic alleys, and the setting is excellent. A castle (open to the public, with great towers to climb) guards the waters, while mountain slopes rear up behind the clustered buildings. A cable-car takes you right up to the high grassy summit of the Monte Baldo ridge, where the air is fresh and cool, the views are stupendous, and you can refresh yourself at several cafe-restaurants. Walkers can begin high-level hikes here, while the lazier can return to Malcesine to browse in the gift shops or enjoy an ice cream. > More about Malcesine

Garda walking experience We took a boat to Garda (the town), and walked to Bardolino over the lakeside hill where a fortress once imprisoned a fair maiden of olden times. You can explore caves at the top, then descend along small roads towards Bardolino through rural olive groves and allotments, a real taste of the countryside.
