Gone are the days when going on an international trip meant lugging around a big guidebook or printing out dozens of pages of information, maps, phrases, and directions. Nowadays, there’s a travel app for just about everything, from making restaurant reservations or booking last-minute museum tours to hiring taxis or checking train schedules. Many are free, and some can be used offline to avoid data charges.

Here we’ve collected a list of some of the best apps for European travel, including several that are useful on other continents, too.

Best Travel Apps for Transportation in Europe

screenshot of Cabify app.

The model for the ridesharing app Cabify is very similar to Lyft and Uber, though Cabify is only available in two European countries—Portugal and Spain. You can share details of your journey to let friends know when you’ll arrive, and even customize your ride by identifying musical and climate control preferences.

2. FREE NOW

screenshot of FREE NOW app.

The emphatically named FREE NOW (yes, it’s in all caps) was once known as mytaxi, which should give you an idea of what the app does. Calling itself “Europe’s largest taxi app,” FREE NOW offers taxi booking in nine European countries. It’s similar to a ridesharing app, except that this one is for taxis, allowing travelers the convenience of paying for rides through the app instead of cash.

screenshot of Omio app.

With so many ways to get around Europe, it might be overwhelming to compare them. Omio (formerly GoEuro) makes it simple by showing you all your transportation options—trains, planes, and buses—so you can easily see which solution makes the most sense for you. Book your tickets right through the app, and then either print your tickets or save the mobile version on your smartphone.

4. Rome2rio

screenshot of Rome2rio app.

Not only will Rome2rio give you your public transit options between any two destinations on earth, you’ll also get information on driving. From the main results page, where you see the approximate travel times, routes, and costs of each transportation option, you can then drill down and get more details on your favorite—and there’s a link to book tickets, too.

>> Read our guide to using Rome2rio

screenshot of Flixbus app.

Trains may be one of the best ways to get around much of Europe, but plenty of destinations aren’t served by rail. That’s where coach buses come in. Flixbus connects cities in more than 25 countries throughout Europe with regular coach service, and passengers can book easily through the app. There’s free WiFi on board and the drivers even have snacks and drinks you can buy during the trip.

6. BlaBlaCar

screenshot of BlaBlaCar app.

BlaBlaCar is basically what hitchhiking in the 21st century looks like—you’re not standing on a roadside hoping for a ride, you’re screening potential carpooling partners through an app and arranging a trip in advance. If someone else is already driving that way, you can join them, share expenses, and have some company. The network covers more than 15 European countries and now also includes a bus service called BlaBlaBus in five countries.

7. Bike Share Buddy

screenshot of Bike Share Buddy app.

Exploring a new place on two wheels is both fun and efficient, and the proliferation of bike sharing definitely helps make it easier. Travelers don’t always know the ins and outs of a given city’s particular bike sharing program—but Bike Share Buddy solves that problem. The handy app shows you the locations of bike sharing stations in more than 45 countries (many of which are in Europe), even indicating how many bikes are available at each one.

8. Eurail/Interrail Rail Planner

screenshot of Eurail app.

The tried-and-true Eurail Pass now has a tech component. The Eurail/Interrail Rail Planner allows you to search train schedules throughout Europe to plan your rail travel itinerary. You can even filter to see only the trains that work with your pass. And because the Eurail Pass is the equivalent of a ticket, booking on the app is only for the additional reservations you’ll need on top of the pass you already have.

screenshot of Gett app.

Gett makes it easy for travelers to book rides with London’s famous black taxis. The app is also available in Bristol, Coventry, and Manchester in England, and Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland. Using Gett means you don’t need to wait in taxi lines or hail a taxi on the street, and you can schedule a ride in advance.

10. Eurostar

screenshot of Eurostar app.

Speedy Eurostar trains whisk you back and forth from the UK to mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel, and the Eurostar app makes booking and storing train tickets easy and convenient. The app tracks purchases so frequent travelers can earn loyalty perks, and even features some TV programs through Amazon video to watch during the trip with free on-board WiFi.

11. DB Navigator

screenshot of DB Navigator app.

Germany’s national train service, Deutsche Bahn, is revered for its efficiency—so it’s not surprising that the app is, too. The DB Navigator app, like the website, includes not just real-time German train schedules but also train schedules all over Europe. You can book train tickets (for German trains only) through the app, check in for your trip, and even see where on the train platform you need to stand to be near the car where you’ve reserved a seat.

12. Trainline

screenshot of Trailine app.

Despite what the name might make you think, this app is about more than just trains. Trainline is a booking app for trains and buses in Europe—including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain—helping travelers secure the sometimes-sizeable discounts that come with advance bookings. The app even lets you search for route options that will specifically go through (or avoid) certain cities to better tailor your journey.

13. citymapper.

screenshot of Citymapper app.

The powerful and popular Citymapper app, available in nearly 20 cities in Europe, combines public transit maps for buses, subways, and trams with real-time schedules, transit status updates, and even car and bike sharing information. You can also find out which exit to take from a subway station. It’s all in one handy place to make city navigation a piece of cake—for residents and travelers alike.

14. Scooterino

screenshot of Scooterino app.

While the Scooterino app’s usefulness is limited (it’s only for Rome), it’s so well-suited to getting through the busy city’s notorious traffic just like an Italian that it’s worth mentioning. Scooterino is ridesharing via scooter, giving you a chance to zip through the Italian capital on the back of a scooter without needing to do any of the driving or knowing your way around. Find out the rough cost of a trip before you book and pay your driver through the app, just like other ridesharing services.

The Best Travel Apps for Translation and Conversion in Europe

15. google translate.

screenshot of Google Translate app.

Google’s handy online translation is available in an app, which helps you translate between 103 languages. There are several ways to enter the word or phrase you want to translate, from typing on the keyboard or handwriting to speaking into the microphone and even translating text in real-time using the phone’s camera. The number of languages supported by each method (aside from using the keyboard) varies, but it’s still overall a powerful tool. What’s more, Google Translate now works in any app with “Tap to Translate.”

16. TripLingo

screenshot of TripLingo app.

The TripLingo app covers the basic translation needs most travelers have—through typing on the keyboard, speaking into the microphone, or using the phone’s camera—but it’s also got educational tools. The app includes a phrasebook as well as audio language lessons, as well as specific etiquette, safety, and culture tips to help travelers feel more comfortable in unfamiliar places. There’s even a built-in currency converter and tip calculator.

17. GlobeConvert

screenshot of GlobeConvert app.

The minimalist GlobeConvert makes conversion easy, no matter what you’re trying to convert. Quickly switch currency, temperature, weight, distance, and much more into the unit of measurement you understand best. Save the conversions you use frequently, like US dollars to euros or fahrenheit to celsius, to make the process even more convenient. The app will even automatically fill in one of the currency fields based on your geotagged location. GlobeStudio, the makers of GlobeConvert, have other useful apps for travelers, too, including one that details tipping guidelines for the country you’re in.

The best travel apps for things to do and see in europe .

screenshot of Viator app.

No matter where you want to go in the world, or what you want to do, Viator probably has a tour (or seven) that will suit. To make it easier to find and book tours on the go, Viator’s app brings the catalog to your phone—even finding what’s near you based on your location. You can book same-day tours in some cases, find tours that help you avoid long entrance lines, and tickets booked through the app are saved on your phone.

19. SANDEMANs New Europe

screenshot of SANDEMANs app.

SANDEMAN has been giving free tours in a growing list of cities for more than a decade, and now covers 17 European cities. Each basic city tour is free—the idea being that each traveler tips the guide based on how useful, entertaining, or educational they thought the experience was. There are also several other paid tour options in each place. So, if you enjoy the free tour, you can book another one right away with the app.

20. TripDoc

screenshot of Tripdoc app.

Any travel lover who is constantly accumulating recommendations for future (potential) adventures—from friends, TV shows, magazines, etc.—knows how annoying it is to finally take a trip and not remember where you put all those little notes. Enter TripDoc, a guide to any city in the world that you create by adding pinpoints to city maps. Save notes about each tip to help jog your memory (such as a specific recommended dish at a restaurant or who gave you the tip). Then, when you're visiting a city saved in your TripDoc library, the map will show you where those recommended spots are in comparison to where you are. No more substandard meals because you're hungry only to find out later that a restaurant your friend told you about was just around the corner.

21. Rick Steves Audio Europe

screenshot of Rick Steves app.

Bring everyone’s favorite Euro-geek on your European trip with the Rick Steves Audio Europe app. Choose the destinations you’ll be visiting and the information you’ll want to have on hand—including plenty of travel tips and an excellent selection of free audio guided tours—and download them to your device when you have WiFi. Then, it’s all available offline so you don’t have to worry about data charges while traveling.

22. Spotted by Locals

screenshot of Spotted by Locals app.

When you’re not fortunate enough to have friends all over the world, Spotted by Locals is a good alternative. Locals populate the database with personal tips for the city they live in and love, giving travelers a chance to explore beyond the usual list of sights and restaurants. The goal, besides helping travelers enjoy trips, is to ease the burden of overtourism on some places while promoting others that may not get their fair share of traveler love. The app’s maps and tips are all available offline, and new tips are constantly being added.

23. TripScout

screenshot of TripScout app.

TripScout curates articles and videos from more than 1,200 publishers, local experts, bloggers, and influencers and puts them all in one place. Every recommendation is mapped to a point of interest—a shop, restaurant, monument, etc.—so when you find one you like, just click and add it to your itinerary.

The Best Travel Apps for Places to Eat in Europe

24. the fork.

screenshot of the fork app.

What started as “La Fourchette” (French for “The Fork”) became TripAdvisor’s The Fork in 2014. Now, instead of focusing just on restaurants in a few European countries, The Fork allows diners to search for and book tables at thousands of restaurants across nine European countries. Filter your search based on dietary restrictions or average price per person, see your options by neighborhood, and—at some restaurants—take advantage of special offers if you book through The Fork.

25. Happy Cow

screenshot of Happy Cow app.

Finding vegetarian and vegan restaurants around the world is made easier with the Happy Cow app. The listings cover more than 180 countries, and after browsing the options and saving ideas to your trips, you can access the information offline when you’re out and about. Refine your searches to places that are vegetarian, completely vegan, or just have vegetarian options on the menu.

Bonus: Going

signup screen for Going.

Before you travel in Europe, you’ve got to travel to Europe, and Going can help you get there for less. Every day, we send members amazing flight deals—up to 90% off regular prices—to Europe and other destinations around the world, including the US.

Our team of Flight Experts spends hundreds of hours every week searching for deals, and when we find a great deal, we send it to our members, along with all the information they need to find and book the deal directly with the airline or on a site like Kayak or Priceline. And when we say great deal, we mean great, like $383 roundtrip nonstop from San Francisco to Paris or $394 roundtrip nonstop from Chicago to Iceland.

We don’t send deals for ultra-last-minute flights, deals with limited availability, or flights that require a bunch of long layovers. We don’t take any commissions when you book a deal we send, so our only goal is to send you a deal you’ll love. On average, our members save $550 per ticket off regular prices.

Check out our list of the best flight booking apps and join Going for free to get amazing cheap flight deals delivered right to your inbox.

Which of course means less time crying and more time stuffing your face!

Best of all, the travel apps in this list are mostly free.

You’ll be very glad you did.

Download for iOS | Download for Android

TripIt is a magical app that organizes your hotel bookings, flights, tickets and all in one place… the best thing is, it does it automatically through scanning your inbox for confirmation emails.

If you’re planning a long trip with multiple stops, hotels, modes of transport, etc. to worry about, then TripIt is a great tool for organizing everything in one neat place. Although the automatic import can sometimes be finicky, all you need to do is forward emails to [email protected] and it detects all the information automatically from there.

travel app in europe

2. Google Maps

Odds are 99% of you already have Google Maps downloaded on your phone, but it really is one of the most helpful apps out there for travelling.

I love to use it for not just navigating, but for also saving places I’m interested in. Whenever I find a cool cafe, attraction or spot I want to visit somewhere, I star it on my Google Maps so that way when I’m in a city exploring, I can easily see worthwhile spots that are nearby.

I also like to use it to find food, cafes, attractions near me through search. Saving maps for offline use is a huge perk of this app as well, and here’s a cool trick: you can easily save a spot for offline use by typing in OK Maps.

Maps.me is another good app with offline maps but I prefer a Google Maps because I’m more used to it.

travel app in europe

When travelling around Europe, you have a lot of options in terms of how to get from one place to the other. Between trains, planes and buses, the choices are pretty overwhelming, BUT Omio is a great app that allows you to search and compare different transportation options all in one place and even sort the options by what’s cheapest, fastest, and by time.

This is one of the handiest apps you can use while planning your trip and while I love flight apps like Google Flights or Skyscanner , Omio just covers more ground in terms of options so this is definitely one to keep on your phone.

travel app in europe

4. Google Translate

If you’re travelling in a foreign country where you don’t speak the language, having the Google Translate app is an absolute must.

Of course, when you are connected to the Internet, you can use it to search up translations in a bunch of different languages but what you should also do is save the languages you’ll be encountering most for offline use. This way, with data or without, you can translate phrases here and there which will come in very handy. Another little known tool is the image scan translation tool which you can use to translate things like signs and menus.

travel app in europe

Another great translation app is SayHi and its main focus is voice translations so you can have a way to connect with locals in a destination even if you don’t speak the language.

All you have to do is select the language you’re speaking, the language you’re translating to and speak into it. Then a voice will read a translation out loud. I’ll be honest, the translations aren’t always perfect, but it helps you get your point across and can be a great way to break the ice if you have trouble being understood.

Click here to sign up for a FREE card!

Download app for iOS | Download app for Android

If you want a functional debit or credit card to use when you’re in Europe that charges you no foreign transaction fees, then you need to look into Revolut . I’ve been using them for years!

Making an account takes minutes, it can all be done on your phone, and then you get a free card shipped to you within a few days. With it, you’re able to top up your card and transfer money between currencies at the interbank exchange rate which means lots of potential savings, and a separate card you can use for payments and even ATM withdrawals. The app is also great for tracking your expenses, quick money transfers within Europe and they even have premium cards that come with perks like travel insurance and lounge access.

If you’re travelling long term in Europe or even coming here as an expat, this is an amazing service you need to take advantage of. Click here to learn more.

travel app in europe

7. Splitwise

If you’re travelling with another person or a group of people, Splitwise is an app that will 1000% save your friendships, relationships, marriages, whatever.

It’s a finance app that allows you to input expenses as you go, so if you paid for hotels and your friend got flights, or you got lunch and your friend got coffees, you can have an accurate record of who paid for what so nobody is bitter about paying more or owing someone lots of money. It also takes out the stress of doing the math, or the awkwardness of going full loan shark, so it’s amazing, I highly recommend it.

travel app in europe

If packing stresses you out, first of all – check out my article on Packing Tips , but also if you need help creating easy Packing Lists, Packr is an amazing app that lets you input your destination, your dates, trip details and then it magically creates a packing list for you based on weather forecasts and what kind of activities you’ll be doing.

You can change the quantity of items, add items, and if you pay for the premium version, you can also customize lists a lot more and even integrate it with TripIt! If you get packing anxiety, this is a great app to have.

travel app in europe

9. GetYourGuide

Browse the regular GetYourGuide website here

If you’re a fan of tours, attractions and activities, one handy app to download is GetYourGuide which is an aggregator for different activities that has great selection in Europe. From walking tours and skip-the-line-tickets to experiences like cooking classes, you can book and pay all through the app which takes the hassle out of finding a good activity. I like to vet them based on reviews! They also have a best price guarantee so if you can find a place that does the same tour for cheaper, they’ll pay you the difference which is pretty amazing.

travel app in europe

10. PolarSteps

If you want an easy way to log your travels and keep a journal of your trip in a seamless way, PolarSteps is a great travel tracking app that automatically records your trips for you by syncing with your phones location and camera roll.

This means you can easily keep track of your travels, edit stops, add photos, write down little notes, all within one easy app. At the end of your trip, you can even order a pretty photo book based on your trip info too, which would make a great souvenir!

travel app in europe

11. Too Good to Go

If you are on more of a budget and want to save some money on food, one great app to download for your Europe trip is called TooGoodToGo, a wonderful app that aims to reduce food waste by selling the leftover food from restaurants for really cheap.

You basically hop on the app, which is live in many major European cities, and you can place orders with different restaurants to pick up meals at certain hours for less than 5 bucks.

You don’t usually get to pick what you get, but it’s a great way to eat affordably and help keep good, edible food out of the landfill.

travel app in europe

12. HotelTonight

Sometimes in travel, you want to be spontaneous or you’re forced to be spontaneous because something has gone wrong.

HotelTonight is a great app for these moments.

They curate cheap last minute hotel deals for the day-of so you can get very cheap stays with last-minute notice.

They also do this thing called the daily drop where there’s one very especially cheap deal for that day, so it’s a good app to keep on your phone in case you get stranded somewhere and need to find a place to stay.

travel app in europe

13. Booking.com

Booking.com is another great accommodation app to have on your phone. My favourite thing about Booking is they have a lot of great hotels with lax cancellation policies so if your plans aren’t set in stone but you want a place to stay just in case, you can easily reserve a spot and then cancel.

Many places let you cancel up to the day before with no penalty, so it’s a very handy app with great functionality and allows you to browse a lot of hotels at once.

I book 90% of my hotels through them and have never had an issue.

travel app in europe

14. FreeNow

If you expect to be taking taxis at some point during your Europe trip, a great app you should download is called FreeNow, formerly known as MyTaxi.

It works very similarly to Uber or Lyft except the main difference is you use it to order an actual taxi, and you can pay either in-person or with the app.

This is awesome because it can help you avoid taxi scams which are unfortunately very common in major European cities, and it also allows you to easily hail a taxi wherever you are.

travel app in europe

15. City Mapper

If you’re visiting some major cities during your Europe trip, like London, Paris, Rome, Brussels, and dozens more, odds are you’ll be able to use City Mapper, an amazing free transport/map app that is great.

It helps you find the best way from Point A to Point B in a city with different options including public transport, walking and cycling.

I find it’s often more accurate than Google Maps in some cities, and the best part is you can save journeys for offline use or even use aspects of the app online, which is PERFECT for cities like London where you get zero service underground.

travel app in europe

16. WiFi Map

In terms of necessities when you travel, I would say the order would go water, food, and then WiFi. If you don’t have access to data during your trip, then WiFi is this precious little life source that you will be scouring the streets for like some Internet-deprived zombie.

WiFi map is an awesome app that crowdsources information about WiFi networks and passwords so you can open it up and see at a glance where there is WiFi near you, and even passwords to certain networks!

Sure this information is all crowdsourced so there’s the potential for outdated passwords, but it’s very handy to see at least where you might be able to get some free WiFi.

The app is free but the ads can be a little distracting, so there’s also a premium version if you want it.

travel app in europe

17. Rick Steves Audio Europe

If you’ve ever turned on a TV or walked into the travel section of a bookstore, odds are you know Rick Steves.

If you don’t, he’s kind of like an OG Europe travel wizard who has been writing guidebooks and filming TV shows about Europe since I was… probably a fetus.

SO, the point is Rick Steves knows his stuff and he also has a very delightful speaking voice and a great app where you can download self-guided tours and other fun audio files to listen to.

travel app in europe

18. XE Currency

Conversion rates can be really confusing, especially when you visit multiple countries in Europe because contrary to popular belief, not everybody is on the euro…. so to avoid any surprises, or to avoid getting scammed, be sure to download the XE currency app on your phone, which will give you a quick and easy way to make currency conversions without stressing out.

travel app in europe

19. GlobeTips

Download for iOS

If tipping culture really freaks you out, then this simple app is a great one to keep in your pocket because it allows you to quickly take a peek at general norms for tipping in your current country, and even has a built in tip calculator that you can use to figure out a fair tip or a great tip based on your bill.

Its free version is functional but you can choose to unlock a pro version for full detailed tipping guides.

travel app in europe

20. Happy Cow

While veggie and vegan options are rapidly growing all around Europe, sometimes it can still be a challenge to find good plant-based options when you travel.

Happy Cow is an app that makes it easier, and although it’s a paid app, it aggregates a lot of reviews and restaurant listings to help you find places to eat abroad as a vegetarian or vegan.

All my veggie friends swear by it, so if food is a priority for you when you’re in Europe, be sure to download it!

The Only 12 Apps You Need for Traveling to Europe

Traveling to Europe have become almost impossible without assistance of various travel apps. And while choosing the right apps can be very overwhelming, these 12 apps is all you need to feel like a local when traveling Europe.

Gone are the days when guide books and maps were occupying much-needed space in your luggage when traveling to Europe. Together with extra weight, constant feeling of worry and anxiety also disappears way before your adventure starts. Nowadays, the travel apps permanently replace the old travel supporting materials making your travels easier, more convenient, and most important stress-free. However, with the new apps appearing almost every months, it’s getting harder to choose the right ones for traveling to Europe. As Europe attracts more and more travelers, it becomes the biggest target for the new travel apps.

I’m not the most tech-savvy person. Moreover, I don’t like the idea of letting the travel apps control my plans. And yet, when traveling to Europe, I alway use a handful of travel apps. Not too many, just enough to book all my flights, rides, sightseeing activities, and find the best vegan food. Saying that, here are the apps I use for my European travels.

HERE ARE THE ONLY 12 APPS YOU REALLY NEED WHEN TRAVELING TO EUROPE:

The best travel apps for transportation in europe.

All you Need to Know to Backpack in Europe for Five Days, Visit Prague www.roadsanddestinations.com

1. Google Flights

First thing first, you need to book your flight to Europe. Google Flights is one of the first apps I came across when planning my European travels. I still use it majority of the time. In fact, I can search for greater deals elsewhere and come back and book my flight through Google Flights. I guess, you can call it a love from the first use. On top of helping you to pick the best deals, Google Flights gives you the most affordable prices a few months in advance. Thus, indirectly it even plans the best time for your European travel.

2. Skyscanner

Similar to Google Flights, Skyscanner is one of the best apps to book your flights to Europe. Moreover, it can suggest you the cheapest flight from your destinations. Although, I still prefer planning majority of my trips to Europe with Google Flights, Skyscanner comes in handy as the second best option. This travel app is especially useful when you’re not sure where to go. In that case you can simply enter the word “everywhere” in your final destination line. The app will give a list of the best places to travel to starting with the cheapest. With Skyscanner, I was able to find a flight from Los Angeles to Dublin for $230.

When it comes to traveling in Europe, Omio is one of my go-to travel apps. Formerly GoEurope, Omio suggests the best routes and transportation options from trains to planes, and buses. It even helps you with booking local trips such as a ride from a city center to the airport. Once stumbled upon this travel app when planning our yearly trip to Europe, I can’t stop using it.

Uber is one of the travel apps that is not limited to only traveling to Europe. Nevertheless, it’s very useful especially when you’re not in a hurry to use public transportation. This ride sharing app helps with fast, reliable, and cheaper than regular taxi rides in minutes any time of the day.

5. FREE NOW (mytaxi)

Unfortunately, you can’t always rely on Uber when traveling in Europe as some counties restrict or prohibit Uber services. In that case turn to FREE NOW, once known as mytaxi. Just as Uber, FREE NOW offers effortless taxi booking. It covers over 100 European cities making traveling here more convenient. Moreover, in some countries that allow booking taxi services from both Uber and FREE NOW, the latter offers slightly better deals.

6. Google Map

Nowadays, you hardly see travelers exploring Europe with old-fashioned maps. Instead, you see them peering at their phones from time to time or following directions provided by Google Map app. Regarded as one of the best travel apps, this popular application provides the best routes for traveling in Europe by car, train, bicycle, and even on foot. Make sure to download offline maps before your European trip in case your Internet connection is slow or absent.

7. Citymapper

Citymapper is another powerful app to use when traveling to Europe. It combines public transit maps for buses, trams, and subways with real-time schedules and offers transit status updates. Be sure to save your routes to the app to use it when WiFi is unavailable.

Google apps make traveling to Europe so much easier and convenient. Even when it comes to such a big issue as communicating in different languages, Google is ahead of the game with its Google Translate app. The app intends to help you translating between over 100 languages. You can either type the word or phrase or speak it into the microphone in order to get it translated. Google Translate even enables translating text in real-time using the phone’s camera.

The Best Travel Apps for Booking Your Activities when Traveling in Europe

5 Must-Do Things in Vienna beyond Attractions, Apps for Traveling to Europe, www.roadsanddestinations.com

When traveling in Europe, you want to see as much as possible and visit as many places as you can. Unfortunately, finding appropriate guided tours can be overwhelming at times. Viator’s app solves this problem and gathers the best guided or self tours in the area for you to choose from. You can even book same-day tours like I did in Amsterdam . This app is a great way to take away the hustle from your European travel plans.

11. Booking

Although Booking or booking.com is better known for booking accommodation, it offers some great options for discounted tours and trips when traveling in Europe. Similar to Viator, this app has tours that suit everybody. Moreover, after booking a hotel through this company, Booking emails you list of things to see and do in your new city with a discount rate up to 15%. I couldn’t pass on these offers and saved enough for additional two tours when traveling in the Netherlands and Ireland .

12. HappyCow

Traveling in some parts of Europe can be a real issue for vegan and vegetarian. But not that often if you use HappyCow app. The listings cover well over 100 countries. You can refine your searches to places that are strictly vegan, vegetarian, or both.

hi there, thanks for the reco on Omio, super helpful. Ill share with you another app that was super useful to me – its called ATM Fee Saver – helps in many countries to find the fee free ATMs or cheaper ATMs available. Could see the atm fees and withdrawal limits and calculated fees with what looked like an easy calculator inside the app. Was a life saver as ATM fees abroad can really add up! You can try it out!

I will. Thank you!

If you are planning to travel to Europe, don't miss these 33 travel apps that will save you time and money and help you get so much more out of your trip.

travel app in europe

girl using travel app to take a picture in Barcelona, Spain

I've been on my first backpacking trip through Europe for almost four months now, and during this time I've discovered some websites and   travel apps that make life easy for those wanting to travel on the cheap.

Each one of these top   travel apps has helped me and still helps me in many ways, whether for finding cheap tickets, local food spots or cool things to do at affordable prices. From navigating new cities to communicating in the local language to taking incredible photos to even earning on the road, these Europe travel apps have truly taken my travel experience to the next level.

Since it would be unfair to enjoy these travel hacks all to myself, I've chosen only the best apps to travel with in Europe  for this list.

Check out the 34 best travel apps to enjoy in Europe:

  • Omio (formerly GoEuro)
  • Google Maps
  • Bike Share Buddy
  • TransferWise
  • Money Manager

Worldpackers

  • Couchsurfing
  • Hostelworld
  • Google Photos
  • Google Translate
  • TripAdvisor
  • FreeTour and SANDEMANs New Europe

Apps for getting around without fear and without getting lost

Apps for getting around

1. Omio (formerly) GoEuro

Omio (formerly known as GoEuro) is a fairly well-known platform created to help travelers explore Europe with ease . You can use the Omio website and app to compare and book train, bus or flight tickets for any destination in Europe. If you want to  travel Europe on a backpacker's budget , Omio should be your go-to transportation app. Also, once you've purchased your tickets, you can discover your travel route on web, mobile or app. I recently used Omio to book a train ticket for €21 cheaper than I would have paid at the city train station's ticket office!

Many seasoned travelers consider Omio the best app for train travel in Europe .

2. Rome2Rio

Rome2Rio is an online service that shows potential travel routes between one destination and another. It's a great way to see the best travel route options for your trip and find the best possible way to get to your destination. Unlike Omio, it doesn't display the exact price of each trip — only an approximate amount.

Rome2Rio is one of the best apps for planning a trip to Europe .

3. Skyscanner

Skyscanner is a web-based app that shows flight ticket, hotel, and car rental costs from various companies, making it easy to compare prices on the same platform. I used Skyscanner a lot before starting my journey across Europe. If your travel dates are flexible, Skyscanner will allow you to select the month you wish to travel to your preferred destination, and will show the cheapest days to travel in that month.

There's also the possibility to search without a destination, or any specific date whatsoever! Just select your departure city and let the app do its work and discover the cheapest dates and places to travel.

AZair is a site with a super simple and straightforward design that shows countless economic flight trajectories for lost cost carriers. AZair picks the cheapest flight options from multitudes of possible connections, and is great for finding the best airfare prices in Europe . You can quickly find discounted rates for more than 94 airlines with low-cost flights in Europe , the Mediterranean, and Asia.

Flixbus is a German bus company recognized throughout Europe for having more affordable (and direct) bus fares than other companies. You can use Flixbus to follow busses in real time and know exactly what time they will arrive and what the stops will be before reaching your final destination. The company also sends emails and texts alerting any delays, in addition to alerts in the app itself. Flixbus currently operates in 29 countries and now has the Flixtrain , which offers train passes for €10.

Flixbus is one of the best apps for Europe travel .

6. BlaBlaCar

BlaBlaCar is a carpooling platform for both short and long distance travel. It operates across Europe and caters to travelers that want to save money by spending only on the cost of travel. Most drivers use BlaBlaCar to give up free space in their car in exchange for help with the cost of gas, making it an excellent environmentally-friendly way to travel.

Sometimes you can find a ride that's considerably cheaper than a bus or train ticket. Plus, there are usually other travelers in the same car, so it's a great opportunity to meet other likeminded people and make friends while traveling !

Finally, if you can't find the perfect ride, you can create an alert to be notified as soon as there is a route that suits your travel needs.

7. CityMapper

CityMapper is a public transit app and mapping service that aims to make city travel as stress-free as possible. It displays all options for a wide range of urban modes of transport, from walking and cycling to driving, bussing, commuting by train, etc.

I use CityMapper regularly to check and compare various itinerary lengths and times. If you know you won't have data, just search for the route you want to take while connected to WiFi and save the results for later.

CityMapper works in various cities in Europe and all over the world and is known as the best map app for Europe .

9292 is great if you're traveling through through Holland. It shows the exact time the bus, metro or train will pass by. Even if transit is delayed, it automatically updates you with the new schedule. You can also put in your origin and destination locations and it will tell you at which point or platform to wait, trip duration and where to get off.

9292 even offers a filter for handicap accessibility!

9. Google Maps

Google Maps is a Google tool that is well-known around the world for its excellent web mapping features, including satellite imagery, aerial photography, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets, real-time traffic conditions, and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle and air, or public transportation.

Google Maps' 'Explore' tool shows local markets, ATMs, gas stations, hospitals, pharmacies, and convenience stores. The app gives special attention to heavy traffic and long travel times, and offers alternative options for heavily congested routes.

There are also some not-so-well-known features such as saving favorite or save-for-later places, sharing your location with friends in real time and personalizing and saving a map to use offline. Additionally, after downloading a map, the app will continue to show routes for cars, just without traffic updates.

10. Maps.me

Maps.me provides offline maps of the whole world. Unlike Google Maps, once Maps.me has been downloaded you will no longer need the internet for routes for cars, public transport, biking and walking, including trails. Maps.me also displays hotels, attractions and nearby places to eat... all offline!

Maps.me is considered one of the best apps to use when traveling to Europe .

11. Bike Share Buddy

Bike Share Buddy  is essential for those who enjoy riding bikes. This app shows the best local places to rent a bike in various cities all over the world. Bike Share Buddy is already available in ten countries in Europe and the app is very simple to use. You simply select your location and instantly get access to all the nearby bike sharing stations, plus you're able to see how many bikes are available at each station!

12. Uber

Uber  is a ride-share company that allows users to search for available nearby drivers through a mobile map. In Europe, Ubers are known to be cheaper than traditional taxis, and you can use the same account and login information you use back home.

Cabify is a transport app that lets you get around with private cars with a driver. Like Uber, it offers a high quality of service and high safety standards, and rides are requested through an app on a smartphone. Cabify is currently available in Spain and Portugal.

14. Free Now

With Free Now , you can book a cab without having to wait for a taxi on the street. At the end of your ride, you can add your driver to your favorites so that your next request will be made to your preferred driver.

Apps to eat, drink and be merry

15. Just Eat

Just Eat is is an online food delivery service similar to  UberEats in the USA. You can use Just Eat in over ten countries in Europe. Buying is easy and delivery is fast. Sometimes, even if the restaurant you have in mind is nearby, it's better to buy food through the app because of available promotions and discounts. Perfect for rainy days!

Just Eat is considered the best food app in Europe .

Apps to exchange money and control spending

Apps to exchange money and control spending

16. TransferWise

TransferWise  is a UK-based money transfer service that allows people to send and receive money safely from abroad. The company provides multi-currency accounts and supports more than 750 currency routes across the world including GBP, USD, EUR, AUD and CAD, and provides multi-currency accounts.

Using TransferWise is much cheaper than transferring with a bank. It's very safe and easy to use, and the support is stellar. They also recently launched a debit Mastercard that lets you spend anywhere in the world at the real exchange rate, but for now you have to get on the waitlist.

PayPal  advertises itself as being the fastest, safest way to send money, make an online payment, receive money or set up a merchant account. It's particularly useful in Europe because various other platforms like Omio, FlixBus, Airbnb and even certain tourist attractions allow PayPal as a form of payment on their websites or apps. I also recently discovered that you can send and receive money between PayPal accounts and the transfer system is fast and easy to use.

18. Money Manager

Money Manager app is indispensable for anyone needing to budget and track their expenses during a trip. Money Manager gives you an overview of your spending and tells you the categories in which your spending is highest. It also creates graphs that illustrate your daily, weekly and monthly financial activity, and tracks your method of payment (cash, card, etc).

Apps to stay and exchange experiences

Apps to find accommodation

19. Worldpackers

Worldpackers is an online platform that allows you to travel exchanging your skills for accommodation. Worldpackers has incredible projects on offer in six continents, including North and Central  America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and Oceania. Whether you want to explore the best places to travel on a budget or go elsewhere, there's a unique opportunity for you to gain a deeper understanding of your destination by sharing your skills in a Worldpackers project.

As a Worldpackers community member, you'll gain access to hosts in 100+ countries . All you need to do is pay an annual fee and you can enjoy everything the site has to offer. Once you create your profile and highlight your skills, simply search for hosts in your preferred destination.

Work exchange opportunities include offering your skills to a local community through social impact programs, discovering bucket list destinations while working as a front desk receptionist at a hostel, or building your digital portfolio in content writing, social media, photography, videography, marketing, and programming by working with hostels, NGOs, eco-villages and thousands of other Worldpackers hosts!

There is no better way to save on accommodation than by not spending on it at all. With Worldpackers, you'll get to meet cool people from all over the world, hone skills that you already have and learn many new things. You'll also be able to speak directly with other world-packers who have lived the experience and ask your own questions. The platform is very secure and has an attentive support staff if anything goes wrong on your trip.

20. Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing  is an online platform where people offer a room, a couch or even a mattress where you can sleep, in exchange for... nothing! If you're on a budget, Couchsurfing is a great way of saving money. However, Couchsurfing should not be used solely as a means to stay for free in the homes of locals. Couchsurfing is about sharing moments with your host. If you don't have the time or energy to connect with your host, you're better off going to a hostel, hotel, or Airbnb.

Couchsurfing also has a feature called "Hangouts", where you can see what people nearby are up to and reach out to anyone you want to hang out with. It's excellent for getting to know people and exchange experiences, plus you receive cool tips about your destination from a local!

21. Booking.com

The site and app for Booking.com  gather various offers for accommodation, flights, restaurants, and car rentals. They also show ratings and reviews from other users. It's an excellent platform for displaying really affordable prices with free cancellations and reservations without a credit card.

By the way, Booking.com is offering 2% cashback to Worldpackers users that create a profile through their link . Signing up to Worldpackers is free, and you only need to get a membership when you decide to have your first experience through the platform. For members of Pack Plan, the benefit is even better: 4% cashback at Booking.com in addition to other advantages.

*Cashback’s benefit is limited to USD 200 per booking, and you must login to your Booking.com account to access Cashback.

Airbnb  is part of the "sharing economy." You can use Airbnb to find adventures close to home or in faraway destinations and access unique homes, experiences, and places around the world.

There is truly something for every taste on Airbnb. You can find entire homes, apartments, lofts, studios, individual rooms and more as special places to stay instead of a hotel. Furthermore, Airbnb also offers a diverse range of experiences like bike tours, crafting classes, yoga, etc. You can find prices within your budget and flexible cancellation policies.

23. Hostelworld

Hostelworld is one of the best platforms for finding an outstanding hostel . Use Hostelworld to compare hostel prices and general information (distance from the city center, cleanliness, etc) all in one place. You can also see each hostel's ratings and reviews by date, with the most recent displayed first. If you book decide to book your hostel through Hostelworld, you'll also receive free cancelation up to seven days before your stay!

The app helps you organize what you need to pack in your luggage by allowing you to choose the destination, date, length of stay and purpose for the trip (business or pleasure). Pack Point then creates a list of clothes and items based on your length of stay, activities and predicted weather forecast for your destination. You're able to edit and customize the list as you please!

Apps to remember and never forget a thing

26. google photos.

Google Photos is a service for free and unlimited photo storage and sharing. It's great because it backs up photos that accumulate on your phone and then gives you the option to delete them and free up space for new images! It's still possible to access the photos and videos you've deleted through the site from any computer in the world.

You can use Google photos to create albums and organize your photos, "favorite" selected photos, and name identified faces. If you prefer, the app will also automatically do this for you! The app also suggests animations, collages, edits and memory slideshows for your photos.

27. Everyplace

Everyplace is a must have app for avid travelers. You can use Everyplace to create your own travel map and mark your visited countries, cities, and places. Apps to get out and have fun everywhere you go

You can search for activities by day, week, weekend, or month and there are always lots of free and budget options. In some cities, Time Out also publishes magazines and travel guides!

31. TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor is a super famous travel website that offers the latest information and exciting content about tourism. TripAdvisor also has a community with travel forums and the most recent, up-to-date reviews and comments about locations and travel experiences.

32. Sandeman's New Europe

Apps to make a little extra money on the trip

Apps to make a little extra money

TRVL  is a travel booking platform that pays you a commission for each reservation you make, whether for yourself or other people. You also gain access to offers and discounts on millions of hotels throughout the world.

TRVL is designed to put travel pros centre stage. As a member of the TRVL community, you can create a page with your favorite places to stay and articles about each destination. Then, when other people book through your profile, you get a commission! So you get some extra cash and help other travelers make decisions by sharing your travel knowledge and expertise.

TRVL is considered one of the best apps for planning a trip to Europe .

Bonus app: Colibra

Colibra is a super beneficial and easy-to-use travel app for claiming flight delay compensation across the EU. In true Robin Hood style, the app heads off to the flight company to get you the compensation after any delayed and cancelled flights, for free and all you have to do is register your boarding pass. Might I add, before you takes off!

This Colibra.io app is certainly worth the brief time it takes to use, saving you time trying to chase the flight providers yourself, which can on average take weeks of stress but obviously, also, receiving money, in the bank account, just 24 hours after a delayed flight lands, isn't bad either. This is not the most well-known travel app but is slowly becoming essential, especially in a post-pandemic Europe .

And there you have it!

I'm positive these  Europe travel apps will help you as much as they've helped me and other travelers. If you have a suggestion of another incredible app or website like the ones listed here, leave the name in the comments so that everyone can save more time and money while traveling and get so much more out of their next  trip to Europe .

I’ve just come across this neat mobile app: potty poche. It highlights visiting the south of France: Languedoc and Provence, with the unique added feature of a public toilet locator for the places to visit; a necessity for France. The app categorizes seaside towns, historic Cathar sites, beautiful and perched villages, famous french village movie venues, as well as practical guides to the lavender fields, favorite market towns, and places associated with famous painters.

10 Best Travel Apps for Europe We Actually Use (2022)

I like to disconnect while traveling, but there is one exception I will always make:  Travel Apps.  Travel Apps can enhance your travel, both while planning and once you have reached your destination.  The days of carrying around a guidebook are gone!  These days all you need is your phone.   Here are my 10 favorite apps that I use for every trip to Eurpoe. Actually, I use them for almost every trip, with the exception of some of the dining apps. Those vary more by country.

Travel Apps For Research, Planning and Managing Your Itinerary:

Before you check out these research and planning apps, make sure to take a look at our post on how to plan your next trip! You can find it here:

8 Simple Steps: How To Plan A Trip That’s Perfect

Kayak | Travel Apps

1) KAYAK (PLANNING/MAKING RESERVATIONS)

  • Kayak  is great to search travel fares, car and hotel rates all in one place.  You input your information and it looks across the internet for all the options.]
  • PRO TIP : I love Kayak because of the filtering capability.  You can filter based on arrival time, departure time, airline and more.  I am sure other apps do this as well, but in my experience the results I get from Kayak are more thorough.

2) TRIPIT (MANAGING ITINERARY)

TripIt | Travel Apps

  • TripIt  organizes the logistics of your trips.  Itineraries, reservations, documents are all in one place.  Just set up the app to automatically update based on reservation emails you receive, and voila!, you have an itinerary at your fingertips.
  • PRO TIP : I use it to hold my itineraries, but also to find holes in them.  Before any trip I go through the Tripit Itinerary to make sure all transportation, hotels, VRBO lodging, etc are in the app and I have not missed anything.

3) TRIPADVISOR (RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, LODGING, RESTAURANTS)

TripAdvisor | Travel Apps

  • TripAdvisor  is an amazing resource for researching and booking activities, lodging and even meal reservations.
  • PRO TIP : TripAdvisor has a cool feature where you can build an itinerary and see it on a map.  I am going to New York with my daughter in a couple of weeks and this is how we are mapping out our itinerary.  You can use the feature yourself, or follow others who have done the work for you!

4) CULTURETRIP (RESEARCH)

  • CultureTrip is one of my go-to apps for researching a destination.  The content is written or curated by locals so you feel like you are getting the inside scoop.
  • PRO TIP : I use it for inspiration for my upcoming travels.  As you read the articles, you can save them for later.  I use it to do research on the go, and then go back to the articles I have saved to really hone in on my plans.

Travel Apps for Transportation Sanity:

5) loungebuddy (airport sanity).

LoungeBuddy | Travel Apps

  • LoungeBuddy  makes airports less painful.  You set up your account by adding airline status, credit cards you hold (some which give you lounge access), lounge memberships and specific trip details.  When you are at the airport the app will tell you what lounges you have access to.  If there are none that you can access based on your info, it will also tell you where you can buy a day pass, and sometimes if you are lucky, it will let you know about a free lounge!.
  • PRO TIP :  Sign up for a credit card that gets you access to Priority Pass.  We have an American Express Platinum card and through that we can access lounges all over the world.  You need to have your card or number with you to access the lounges, and LoungeBuddy will help you figure out which ones.

6) UBER (GETTING AROUND)

Uber Logo

  • Uber  is my go to for getting around a foreign city.  The fact that it is on demand and the transactions are cash free make it such an easy solution!
  • PRO TIP :  Uber is active in many countries around the globe.  However, it is worth finding out in advance if it is active where you are going.  In some countries the app has been banned.  I’ll admit, it is confusing.  I read an article dated July 11, 2019 that said Uber is banned in Portugal.  However, I was in Portugal that same month and used Uber almost every day.  I guess my point here is, if you are going to a country where it is (or might be) banned, have a back up plan.

Travel Apps for Finding Great Food:

7) yelp (restaurants).

Yelp Logo

  • Yelp  is…well… Yelp.  For travel purposes it is an amazing resource to find restaurants.  The reviews have made it possible to find excellent meals almost anywhere.  It will also give you menus, hours, and phone numbers so you can book those reservations.
  • PRO TIP :  Don’t forget to use the app!  My husband and I found our favorite Italian restaurant  ever  while in Venice by searching Yelp.  We were surrounded by “Touristy” restaurants and wanted to try something off the beaten path.  Yelp led us to Antiche Carampane.  It was amazing and we could not have found it if we had not had Yelp.

The Fork | Travel Apps | Restaurants

8) THE FORK (RESTAURANTS)

  • The Fork  is part of TripAdvisor, and specifically focuses on restaurant reviews and bookings in Europe, Australia and Brazil.
  • PRO TIP :  I find The Fork to be more reliable than Yelp in some parts of Europe.  I always check both while looking for good restaurants, but The Fork seems to have more comprehensive reviews.

Travel Apps for Practicing Local Langugage and On-The-Ground Communication:

9) duolinguo (language prep).

DuoLinguo Logo

  • DuoLinguo  is a free language app that gives you daily “bite-size” lessons.  The app has more than 30 languages to choose from, so you can prep for almost any trip!
  • PRO TIP :  Once you know your destination, start your learning! We visit family in Portugal every year.  About a month or two before we go, I start refreshing my Portuguese with DuoLinguo, so once we are there I am good to go!

10) GOOGLE TRANSLATE (COMMUNICATING ON THE GROUND)

Google Translate Logo

  • Google Translate  is an amazing tool for getting around and communicating in a foreign country.   You type in the word or phrase you want to communicate, and both your starting language and the language you are translating to.  Google translate gives you the result in at least written form, and in some languages it will give you pronunciation as well.
  • PRO TIP :  It is not reasonable to think you will master a language before visiting a country.  It is also not reasonable to expect the people you encounter will necessarily speak English.  Google Translate helps bridge that gap and helps you connect with others, regardless of if you share a common language.

Aside from the obvious map, accommodation, and flight apps, here are a few apps for traveling in Europe that I feel I benefited from using on my trip, and I think you could benefit from them too! 🙂 Here are the best travel apps for Europe:

The BEST travel apps for Europe

Xe currency.

Pretty boring, but this travel app really came in handy for me in Europe. XE Currency allows you to add any currency to your list and then translates the one you’re working with to its equivalency in all of your other listed currencies.

I had euros, HUF (Hungary’s currency), and USD on my list. So as a for instance, Hungary’s currency was especially tricky, since 5 USD is equivalent to about 1,483 HUF.

Not only is this one of the best apps for traveling in Europe, but I’ve also utilized it for our Colombia trip and Cabo getaway .

So, yeah, this app has helped me a lot! I suggest using it in every situation involving money just to be confident you know how much USD you are spending.

Screenshot of XE currency travel app showing USD currency amount compared to HUF and euros. One of the best travel apps for Europe!

Pro tip: If you’re traveling to Europe look into travelers insurance ! Companies like Safety Wing offer plans for 1 month of travel for under $50 . I made the mistake of not getting travelers insurance and lost out on a ton of money when I had to unexpectedly cut my trip 10 days short.

Omio was another must for me when it came to the best apps for European travel. Trains and buses were how I got from one city to another, so this app was useful in finding and booking those tickets.

It’s super easy to use. You choose one way or round trip, pick your departure and arrival locations, hit search, and bus, train, and flight options pop up. (Note: I never used the flight option.) Typically, there are a ton of options for each tab, all at various times and prices. Once you book, you conveniently have a mobile ticket available.

Screenshot of Omio app showing where to put starting and ending destination as well as date

Google Translate

I think this one is a given. I didn’t need Google Translate that frequently, but some cities I visited in Europe were a little more off the beaten path that practically required it.

It also came in handy in restaurants that didn’t have English versions of the menu, because you can use your phone’s camera to scan the menu and translate it.

Don’t forget to download the languages you plan to need translation for while you have cell service or WiFi!

screenshot of google translate app emphasizing

I used this travel app to look up activities in whichever European city I was in. Headout has tours, cooking classes, photo ops, and other experiences all categorized. It even lets you skip standing in line for tickets!

Once you select an activity that catches your eye, it lists the highlights, what to expect, inclusions, exclusions, cancellation policies, what to know before you go (if there’s a dress code, timings, accessibility, etc.), and reviews. You purchase tickets through the app and then are emailed a ticket. I love the convenience and ease of navigating this app to find stuff to do.

screenshot of headout app showing how to search for the city you want

Rick Steve’s Audio Europe

Europe is soooo full of history. It’s great to go around and look at the sights, but learning the history behind them is a big part of the experience too. There are a lot of cities that have free walking tours — just google “[name of city] free walking tours,” and I’m sure plenty of options will pop up (but read the reviews before picking!).

I did one in Budapest, and it was a great experience! But sometimes, I didn’t want to walk with a crowd and just wanted to march to the beat of my own drum, so I used this travel app! Rick Steve’s Audio Europe gives you access to several free audio tours as well as some interviews, travel tips, and other information.

You do need WiFi or cell service to download the files. Once they’re downloaded, you can listen to them wherever, whenever. Some of the walking tours even have PDF maps to complement them.

Like a Local

This is another travel app I used for finding activities in whichever city I was in. I used Headout for the more touristy activities, like my tour of the Colosseum. However, I used Like a Local to find places that might be a little more under the radar.

I found some unique bars and restaurants and some cool lookout points of cities from this app. Like a Local is also divided into categories such as tour, eat, party, see and do, and shop. You can create a list for each city — simply add the activities you want to do there to your list and refer back to it as often as you need to. Once you select an activity that piques your interest, it will take you to a page with:

  • an explanation of why locals love it
  • why you should visit
  • special tips
  • the address
  • comments from other people who have visited

I also recommend using Viator and Get Your Guide to check out available activities in the area! These search engines allow you to book in advance to secure your spot, but cancel with 24 hours advance notice if something comes up or plans change.

There are so many great travel apps for Europe out there that make our lives easier or help us find activities to do. These are just a few of the ones I feel really helped me while I was on my trip! But, I’m curious:

What apps do you frequently use while traveling? And which of these do you think are the best apps for European travel? Share ’em with me in the comments below! And be sure to follow me on Insta @guidedbydestiny for more travel tips .

best Travel Apps for Europe

Looking for a good travel app for your European travel in 2024?

This article provides a list of the best travel apps that will help you travel easily around Europe.

Related: Best European Train Booking Sites (Traveling By Train In Europe) .

1. Rome2Rio

2. citymapper app, 3. trainline, 4. trainpal , best travel apps for europe.

During my European tour, I found the Rome2Rio travel app very useful in finding routes. It also had many travel options – planes, trains, buses, cars, ferries, bikes, and so on.

It is a great planning tool that will help you get from point A to B without feeling overwhelmed.

The app is quite handy. It helped me choose between different transport options, plan my routes and get an idea of how much I would spend on ticket prices.

For instance, as you can see in the image below if I wanted to travel from Paris to Rome, Rome2Rio gives me the fastest and cheapest ways to get there.

Additionally, they also give you places to stay at your destination together with the ratings.

Citymapper app is another great travel app that makes it easy for you to travel to different cities by buses, trams, subways, and e.t.c in Europe.

It is great for navigating public transport as it covers all of Europe.

For instance, let’s assume you are in Instanbul and want to go from Paris Garden Hotel Istanbul to Paris Oto.

You just need to add your starting and endpoint. In this case, our starting point will be Paris Garden Hotel Istanbul and Paris Oto will be the endpoint.

The app will give you the number of minutes it will take you to walk, cycle, or take a cab to Paris Oto. Additionally, it has a map view of the direction.

See the below images.

If you plan to use trains and buses to travel across different cities, towns, and countries in Europe, Trainline is a great apps for that purpose.

You can use Trainline to book train tickets from the different rail companies in Europe and to compare the prices.

TrainPal is another great alternative to Trainline. However, TrainPal is different because you can book trains and coaches at a cheaper price when you search for tickets through their split tickets feature.

And for better prices, I recommend that you book early in advance, like 3 weeks before.

I have used TripIt when traveling to so many destinations because it is one of those travel apps that helps you stay organized when traveling.

In fact, it is the best app for travelers with many details to keep track of such as trains, flights, buses, car rental, accommodation, and other activities.

It basically keeps all your travel information in one place and the best part is that you don’t have to enter all the information manually. You only need to forward the confirmation emails of your bookings.

Additionally, I also love the fact that you can set reminders and alerts. I consider this a great feature in a travel app, especially if you are a busy person who tends to forget easily.

All the best!

Our smartphones have become like our own personalized travel agents these days. From finding flights, to accessing real time translations, they have become a one stop shop for everything we need to search for, book, and enjoy our holidays.

Through the use of helpful apps, we can now easily travel all around the world like a pro. Though the usefulness of an app can definitely be regional; for instance what might be a brilliant app for Australia, might not do you any good in Europe.

When travelling through Europe you are faced with a wide variety of transportation options, hotel decisions, languages, currency conversions, etc. As such, knowing what the best apps are to help you with your journey is vital in order to enjoy a flawless travel experience.

The following are our favorite apps for European travel. I guarantee you’ll be well taken care of if you have these seven apps on your phone, though don’t forget to also set yourself up with  prepaid Europe travel SIM cards  to maintain reception and data.

The Best Apps for Travellers Heading to Europe

Tep wireless.

OK, not an app in itself, but before we jump into the best apps you’ll need for Europe, to use any of them you’ll need internet access.

TEP offers a very convenient device; a  pocket-sized personal WiFi hotspot,   to keep you connected to high speed internet anywhere across Europe. (High speed,  secure  internet).

Portable wifi in Europe is the best way to enjoy unlimited internet (on up to five devices at a time) seamlessly between countries,  without having to rely on local SIM cards or unsecure public hotspots.   Plans start at $6.95 a day.

Now to our favorite apps for Europe!

One of the best apps for general travel, TripCase allows you to organize all of your trip details and travel plans in one place. Easily link your hotel bookings, flights, car rentals, and more. You can then view them all in one handy itinerary in the app.

View airline maps and access helpful contact numbers. Get the latest notifications such as flight delays and gate changes sent directly to your phone, usually before individual airline apps do. Search alternate flights if your plans change and see real time seat availability on your flight.

In addition, you can quickly access directions to your hotel when you arrive at your destination or book an Uber directly from the app. Share your trip with others and TripCase will keep them updated on your behalf.

Omio (Previously GoEuro)

Omio is the ultimate app when it comes to a search and booking platform for trains, buses, and flights throughout Europe. It is one of the best comparison apps for cheap transport as it displays all transportation options for getting from Place A to Place B.

Their real-time comparison gives you direct access to over 600 trains, bus, and flight partners, and you can compare the three different modes of transport directly next to one another to find the quickest and / or most affordable journey.

It allows you to quickly search and compare thousands of routes for trains, buses, and flights anywhere in Europe. In just a few easy steps you can select the journey that best suits your needs, know you are getting the best price, and have your paperless e-tickets available to you in the app, even without Wi-Fi connection.

This is particularly useful for those who want to weigh up the convenience of a flight over the cost of the ticket for a bus or train.

FREE NOW (Previously MyTaxi)

Most likely Europe’s largest taxi app, FREE NOW  (previously MyTaxi) has a network of more than 45,000 affiliated taxis across 40 cities. It’s the first taxi app that lets you book, pay for, and rate a taxi.

Simply book a taxi with FREE NOW, add a payment method to your account (credit card or PayPal) and pay for your journey with the app, and watch it arrive in real time and on the map along with receiving a notification when your driver arrives at your location.

If you enjoyed your taxi driver, simply save their name as a “regular driver”. They will be placed at the top of the list the next time you book a journey. Businesses will love FREE NOW as it allows your staff to book taxis without having to pay themselves and the business will receive a single bill for all their journeys once a month.

FREE NOW has been equipping taxis with tablet PCs that allow passengers to view the latest news and weather forecasts during their journey.

Culture Trip

The Culture Trip app is like Tripadvisor on steroids. It gives you the top recommendations when it comes to your destination’s attractions and restaurants along with information regarding its art, music, history, and more.

Explore articles focused on your destination that are written by locals. Bookmark posts you want to come back to and share stories with Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. You’ll find suggestions for off the beaten path gems in addition to the usual tourist traps.

The app covers numerous locations all over the world. It caters to the individual user, giving recommendations based on their personal preferences and recognizes your current location to give you inspiration for what you can experience.

A foodie’s best friend, The Fork allows you to search from over 40,000 restaurants to find the European dish you’ve been dying to try.

Read restaurant reviews, be tempted by mouth watering culinary photos, browse menus, and find directions to your chosen restaurant. The app allows you to book a restaurant free of charge and sends your booking confirmations by email and SMS.

Take advantage of a loyalty program and in-app discounts of up to 50 percent at select restaurants, including a 10€ discount after making your 1st booking with the app.

Google Translate

Learning a new language can be extremely difficult and travelling around Europe presents you with a wide array of languages.

Thankfully with the Google Translate app, you don’t have to learn all the languages as it allows you to translate over 100 different languages.

Don’t have data or Wi-Fi, no problem, as it can translate 59 languages with no internet connection. One of my favourite features is the instant camera translation which allows you to instantly translate text from nearly 40 languages simply by pointing your phone’s camera at the text.

Star and save translated words and phrases for future reference, take photos for higher quality translations, and translate bilingual conversations on the fly.

If you are like me and despise having to deal with math in your head, CalConvert will help you with currency conversions as well as dealing with converting units of measurements.

It is both a simple and advanced scientific calculator that supports all major mathematical functions. You gain access to 150+ currencies without the internet so you can easily see just how much those Italian pair of high heels will cost you.

Convert feet to metres, pounds to kilograms, and miles to kilometres. You can easily save frequently used units of measurement and currencies as well as being able to see a history of your conversions or calculations.

HotelsCombined

With so many booking websites and apps out there it is hard to know where to look. HotelsCombined acts as a search engine dedicated to finding you the best hotel at the best rate.

I usually love Boooking.com for searching hotels but HotelsCombined allows me to see listed prices from this website as well as numerous others such as Expedia and Hotels.com.

Search some 800,000+ hotels with images and ratings, knowing you are backed by their best price guarantee. A nice feature is that their hotel booking app is available in over 40 languages.

HotelsCombined can also help you get in contact with your hotel and sort out any reservation issues when you can’t seem to get things sorted with the hotel directly yourself. To date I have found the app convenient and easy to use along with always seeming to offer the best prices on hotels I am searching for.

Interesting list. Folks should evaluate how much information they want to share to obtain information they may or may not want, though.

Glad you enjoyed the post Roy, hopefully we cold introduce you to a couple of new apps :) Absolutely re being aware of the data your sharing – great tip.

A great help, thanks!

You’re welcome, glad it was helpful!

Ridefinder is also really good, for carpooling if you don’t want to get a taxi. Also BlaBla Car – you can connect with people who have empty seats.

Great tip, thanks Kerstin, I’ll check out both of those :)

These are great recommendations! Totally agree that the best apps are often regional – within Europe itself there are apps we’ve downloaded for specific cities, like London and Dublin. I’ve found that the government / local city councils often have helpful apps too that they release for tourists which usually have maps with attractions, restaurants, a local phrasebook etc. Always good to search for once you get there, or in advance because often the maps will be available offline but you need to download them before-hand.

Great advice, I’m making a note to start looking for those when we visit a new city, I love the idea of having offline maps available – I think I have actually seen a couple of city based apps promoted when I visit various visitors centers – it’s a great idea! Thanks for sharing your insight C :)

Surprised that Uber didn’t make a mention here. I’ve only had good experiences with it, and it’s a lifesaver when you’re traveling :)

Glad to hear you’ve had god experiences with Uber Amal, they’re not available in every country, but I agree, a great app :)

Ah CalConvert, my savior! I can’t do math haha the nice thing being though that once you’re in Europe you can travel for a while and only have to worry about converting Euro. I find that rounding up usually keeps me from going over budget.

I usually round up too if I’m trying to run conversions in my head on the fly :)

' src=

GoEuro is fantastic – I prefer train throughout Europe.

Agreed! Train travel in Europe is such a quick, cheap and convenient way to get around. And it’s so clean and efficient too. I love GoEuro – so handy :)

' src=

Remember to cleanse your phone after you come home. So many apps drain the battery on your phone. Good information.

Great tip Margot. Something I usually forget until I notice my phone going slowly and I have to clean up some space.

' src=

Google Translate is getting really, really accurate!!

It really is! It’s a lifesaver. One of those that permanently sits on my phone :)

' src=

Great suggestions! Never heard of most of these so thanks!

You’re welcome Dee, glad we could set you up with some suggestions for your next trip :) Happy travels!

I am a student in Florence,Italy so i need a help to travel a europe in cheaper way so tell me some best application to use in europe and some offline application too

Hi Vivek thanks for reaching out. All of the above mentioned apps will help you with traveling through Europe. Specifically for traveling cheaper though make sure you download Omio (for travel – trains, buses & flights), Uber for ground transport, and HotelsCombined for accommodation. These should all help :)

Happy travels! I hope you’re having a fabulous time in Florence :)

I just found a neat little app for the Languedoc-Roussillon area of France called Potty Poche. The app includes maps and an interesting narrative of seaside towns, Cathar sites, France’s Most Beautiful Villages, and festivals in the area. Plus, (plus!) it locates by directions and GPS all the public toilets in the same areas and rates them. Well done!

Awesome, thanks for the tip! I’ll put a bookmark on it for the next time we’re in France, sounds like a great app :)

' src=

Google maps is very useful for traveling too, but it can be misleading in big cities if you aren’t careful.

For sure, we live by Google maps, though we did a road trip from Mildura to Mungo National Park earlier in the year and G Maps was way off – quoted 4 hours, when it was only 1. It doesn’t do well with really off the beaten path rural destinations I’ve found.

' src=

It got me running around Ljubljana and i was almost late for an exam.

' src=

Thanks for this great list. It helps me to get an overview about other travel apps. I’m also working on my own on a travel app in my freetime, which helps to create travel routes with AI. If you like it, you can maybe add it to the list. :)

Thanks David

Hi David, so glad you enjoyed the post! Thanks for reading, and sharing your own app. I’ll check it out :)

Happy travels!

' src=

Meg, what a great article!! Some very unique ones here compared to all the standards recos you get out there on other posts! Super helpful. Also thought I’ll share this app ATM Fee Saver – i used it in Europe and even other continents to find free ATMs or whichever cheapest ATM is available closest to me. Was a life saver as ATM fees abroad can really add up!

Thanks for sharing Jess! I’ll check out ATM Fee Saver, that’s a brilliant idea for an app :) So far Ive been using the ATM finder within my Revolut app which is fabulous too, and the local currency option also means not paying any fees. It’s fab!

Planning Your Euro Summer? Here’s 6 Apps to Help You Plan the Trip of a Lifetime

Shantelle Santos Avatar

Top travel planner apps

Don’t even know where to begin with planning? The Wanderlog app has got you covered.

You can create trip itineraries directly on the app, note every restaurant and cafe to dine in, keep track of your flight and hotel reservations, stay up to date with budget costs, and so much more. You can even include notes and attachments to your itinerary to keep everything in the one place.

The best part about Wanderlog is that once you’ve added all of your activities into it, it plots everything out onto a map and organises the days by numbers and colours. So if you’re a visual person, this app is heaven.

All you have to do is sign up for an account and you’re good to go! While there is a paid version of this travel planner app, everything mentioned can be accessed from the free version.

Check it out here.

For the girlies who have a hard time with math on the go, XE is a lifesaver. While it’s predominantly a money transfer app, the conversion section is a fantastic feature. Instead of figuring out how much €36 is in Australian dollars while in the blazing hot European sun, this app does it for you immediately. It’s up to date with the latest conversion rate, updating every 60 seconds, and you don’t even need to make an account!

Download it here.

Navigating train lines in a new country can be incredibly overwhelming. The Trainline app makes figuring out where to go next in an unfamiliar city that little bit easier. The travel planning app shows you all the different companies selling train tickets, provides you with the cheapest route, the fastest route, and how many seats are left. If you book on the app, it also tracks your journey and also gives you live updates on any interruptions or delays.

Get it here.

When travelling to a bunch of different countries, you want to make sure that you’re well versed in the basics of their language because, for one, you’ll be able to really immerse yourself in the country, and for two, there’s nothing worse than rocking up to a country and not even knowing how to say “hello”.

Mango is an amazing app with over 70 languages. it has specific lesson plans on introductions in your chosen language, and other topics to help you progress quickly!

While the app is free, you need a library card to access its features. So get your free library card at your local library and get learning.

Download for free now.

Google Translate

The Google Translate app is our best friend when it comes to travelling. The app translates text, photos, handwriting, and speech in over 100 languages right at the tip of your fingers. But the best feature is the Google Lens.

The Google Lens lets you translate any text you see live. All you need to do is open the camera feature, point it at any block of text, and it will translate it for you before your very own eyes. Neat!

My Maps on Google Maps

This app is for the kids who colour coordinated their assignment headings in high school.

We’ve all heard of Google Maps, but has anyone actually looked into what it could do other than take us from A to B? Well, we found out that Google Maps offers this great function that allows you to create custom maps (including colour coding and labelling destinations with fun icons) through their My Maps feature.

The only downside is that you have to organise everything on the Google Maps desktop, but once the maps are ready to go, you can access them in your app (online and offline) whenever you want.

Get the app now.

22 Best Travel Apps Every Traveler Should Know About

From tracking flight delays, finding last-minute accommodations, and even locating the nearest public restroom, these are the most helpful travel apps to download before you travel.

travel app in europe

Using the right travel apps can help you save both time and money , while making the journey much less stressful . Many of these apps also provide local recommendations and hidden gems tourists don't often get to see — and some are completely free.

Whether you're looking for an app that will give you discounts for popular local events, offer a last-minute booking at a fraction of the price, or help you breeze through the airport , these are the 22 best travel apps to download before your next trip.

Citymapper helps travelers find the speediest route to their destination, providing step-by-step instructions on where to find the nearest bus and train stations. You'll be able to see when the next arrivals are, and real-time routing means you'll get updates every minute. The app also has a chat feature that allows you to update friends and family on your E.T.A. wherever you are.

Available on iOS and Android .

PackPoint takes the hassle out of packing by creating a customized list of what you'll need for your getaway. Enter your destination, travel dates, length of stay, and activities that might require special gear, like hiking or swimming, and the app will create a custom packing list you can save for future use. Besides checking weather conditions for you, the app also allows users to share their packing lists with fellow travelers.

The beauty of Rebtel is you don't need an internet connection to call friends and family back home. The app connects to local phone lines to provide you with cheap calls in 51 countries around the world without having to deal with the hassle of getting a local SIM card or racking up your phone bill.

If you're looking to get outdoors, this app will provide you with the area's best hiking, biking, and running trails. In addition to details on length, starting location, and trail quality, AllTrails includes reviews and photos from a community of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. You'll find useful information like what to pack, obstacles you'll find along the route, and the best scenic spots to check out.

If you find yourself in the middle of a long layover, Dayuse can get you into a hotel room for a few hours for up to 75 percent less than what the typical overnight rate would be. The app features 5,000 hotels in 23 countries, and allows you to make free cancellations at the last minute, in case you manage to catch an earlier flight.

Selections include everything from business hotels to wellness accommodations, with payments made directly when you arrive. You also get full use of the hotel's amenities for the duration of your stay.

The prices of flights can fluctuate, making it tricky to decide if you should book right away or hold off. That's where Hopper comes in, predicting the best time to find the cheapest fares, saving up to 40 percent. The app also has a price-monitoring feature so that you can select a particular flight and receive alerts if the price drops. Through Hopper, users can also compare the prices and amenities of more than 250 airlines and get alerts about airfare flash sales.

RV Parks & Campgrounds

This camping app helps you locate prime RV parks, campgrounds, rest areas, and gas stations across North America. With more than 40,000 facilities, the app sorts locations based on ratings and includes both privately-owned RV parks and public parks to choose from.

Nike Training Club

Hitting the gym while you're traveling can be tough, but with Nike Training Club , you'll feel like you have a personal trainer right in your pocket. That's because you can access hundreds of free workouts from Nike Master Trainers and celebrities like Kevin Hart, Serena Williams, and Cristiano Ronaldo. Audio and video clips help you make sure you're on top of your technique, while personalized training plans will keep you on track.

If you don't have much time to spare at the airport, Grab allows you to check out what food selections are near your gate, and gives you the option to pre-order your meal so you can pick it up on the way. The app currently operates at over 60 airports worldwide, giving you plenty of bites to choose from on your next trip.

GasBuddy is the app you'll want if you're taking a road trip. GasBuddy tracks down where to find the cheapest gas prices, allowing you to filter by price, location, brand, and amenities. It also provides you with deals at nearby convenience stores and price hike alerts so you can nail down the best prices every time.

Want to know what local events are taking place at your destination? Headout will show you the top attractions, shows, tours, and experiences in popular cities like New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Orlando, Hawaii, Dubai, and more.

Activities range from catching a Broadway show, yoga in the hills, or taking a helicopter tour, with exclusive last-minute offers that can be up to 80 percent off.

If you need to access the internet during your travels, chances are you'll have to connect to public Wi-Fi, which can be sketchy. TunnelBear allows you to connect privately and securely by providing you a VPN (virtual private network) that will encrypt your browsing data to keep your information hidden from hackers and advertisers. The app comes with 500MB of free browsing data each month, or you can opt for unlimited data at a low monthly rate.

Hostelworld

Hostelworld is where you'll find more than 17,000 hostels, hotels, B&B's, and communal spaces in 178 countries. The app is great for solo travelers looking to meet fellow vacationers during their trip, including a Noticeboard that highlights events and meetups, and a translator that will help you communicate in up to 43 languages.

WeatherBug provides forecasts for millions of locations around the world, with current, hourly, and even 10-day options. The app also has specific weather maps to track everything from lightning and wind to pressure and humidity, and makes staying on top of changes to the weather easy with instant alerts.

Eatwith allows you to dine with locals, in their homes, all over the world. Menus are posted for you to see, while hosts will typically list what they cook, the languages they speak, and any alcohol pairings they'll be serving. Not only does the app give you a chance to meet locals and get superb dining recommendations, but it also allows you to enjoy a high-quality meal for less than what you'd typically pay at a restaurant.

Available on iOS and Android.

Trying to locate a public restroom can be tricky, especially in a new destination. That's where Flush comes in. The app has a database of more than 200,000 toilets, and quickly provides travelers with nearby bathrooms. You can search without an internet connection, and the app will also notify you if a restroom requires a fee.

While banks may charge you a fee for transferring money abroad, Wise allows you to make a transfer based on real-time currency exchanges, so you can send money at rates the company says are up to eight times cheaper than what you'd find at traditional banks.

TripIt makes it easy to put together a cohesive travel itinerary. Simply forward your confirmation emails, like your hotel and flight reservations, or your rental car reservation, and TripIt will build a full itinerary to help you stay organized with all of your plans.

With real-time alerts, you'll know if your flight is delayed or canceled, while the flight finder can help you book a new option should a cancellation occur.

Another good app for the road, Waze gives you community-based data about traffic jams, and information to locate points of interest like the cheapest gas stations and the fastest routes to your destination. Live maps include voice-guided navigation to easily guide you.

Xe provides live exchange rates and charts to keep you on top of money matters during your travels, easily allowing you to choose between different currencies you'd like to convert. It also has a rate alert so that you can monitor your favorite currencies — and it can be used offline.

Timeshifter

If you're sick of the jet lag battle that inevitably comes with travel, check out Timeshifter , an app that helps you to avoid jet lag long before your flight departs. Thanks to neuroscience research on circadian rhythms and sleep, the app provides personalized recommendations that take into account your age, gender, typical sleep patterns, and specifics about your trip. The app will tell you when you should avoid or seek daylight, and when you should stay awake or take a nap. The result? A gentle jet lag experience, which translates to more time exploring your destination.

FlightAware

If you have a tight connection or are picking up friends or family from the airport, look to FlightAware for help. The app tracks flights in real time, so you can see exactly where the aircraft is at any given moment. In addition to providing arrivals and delays, you can also see if weather will have any affect on certain locations.

10 Apps That Will Make The Most Of Your Vacation In 2024

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that.

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong.

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't.

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money.

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account.

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rome2Rio is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Members are evaluated and assigned a fairytale character similar to enneagram-slash-Myers-Briggs personality types, which is a new and novel approach compared with other iPhone dating apps or Android dating apps .

Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Fairytrails is free to download with in-app purchases and is available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Downloading the Price Scanner and Converter is free from the App Store.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time.

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.

Apple Users in Europe Get a New Third-Party App Store

Altstore PAL is available only to EU residents after a ruling that Apple has to allow third-party app stores.

Lexy Savvides holding the iPhone 13 Pro Max

EU residents have a new app store.

In the wake of the European Union's Digital Markets Act, Apple is required to  allow users in the region to install rival app stores  on their iPhones. After a lengthy process including  implementing various security checks , the first Apple-approved third-party app store,  Altstore PAL , is available now for download in the EU.

Altstore, which went live on Wednesday, is priced at 1.50 euro (plus tax) per month , to offset the new Apple tax on third-party app stores. Installation is easy enough, although Apple tries to dissuade users numerous times from choosing to install the competing app store, according to a report from  The Verge .

Once installed, users will find two apps. The first is Clip , a clipboard manager for iOS that runs in the background and saves your clips for future use. The app requires a monthly Patreon pledge of 1 euro per month.

Altstore's other app,  Delta , is a Nintendo console emulator that can emulate a few different consoles, including the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, a few different Game Boys and the Nintendo DS. Delta is available free of charge as a thank you to users who paid to use Altstore. The emulator was also released on the regular Apple App Store. Unlike iGBA, which received the boot from Apple a couple of days ago , Delta is legitimate and should stay on the App Store for the long term.

Altstore is aimed at indie developers

Riley Testut , developer of Altstore and the two apps, wants Altstore to be the top destination for indie developers. The store is aimed at developers who are making apps that would otherwise be unable to make it into the App Store. Clip, one of the first two apps, would never be approved on the Apple App Store thanks to the workarounds it uses to run in the background at all times.

Altstore uses Apple's new Web Distribution , which allows developers to more easily distribute apps to users in the EU. End users will be able to add "sources" to Altstore, giving them a larger number of apps to browse and install. "Sources" refers to developers hosting apps on their own servers. Users can add a source to Altstore and then will have more apps to download, similar to adding an RSS feed to a newsreader.

Altstore will allow paid apps

Altstore will lean on Patreon , the monetization platform that lets users pay for original content from their favorite creators. Developers will be encouraged to use the platform primarily to offset Apple's core technology fee, or CTF . That fee requires developers to pay 0.50 euro for the first installation per user. That user can then download the app an unlimited number of times per year. When the next year starts, the first app update, user installation or reinstallation will generate another 0.50 euro charge to the app developer.

Since Altstore is marketed primarily at indie developers, Patreon allows developers to consistently communicate with their users. The store is set up to allow developers to offer different tiers of payment. End users might pay 0.50 euro for a base installation and then pay a higher price for the premium version of the app at a later date. App developers can also charge one subscription for access to all of their apps, something that the Apple App Store doesn't allow.

Those not in the EU can still use the store, but it requires some extra steps, including the installation of AltServer. Altstore's website has instructions for installation.

This popular European city is the latest to increase its tourist tax to battle overtourism

travel app in europe

Barcelona is the latest European city to increase its city-wide tourist tax, a slight increase of €0.50 (about $0.53) per night, as the city seeks to curb overtourism.

The new price of €3.25 (about $3.45) was implemented on April 1 as part of the Stays in Tourist Establishments Tax . The bylaw was introduced in 2021, when the tourist tax was €0.75 (around $0.80) per night, and gradually increased the tax each year through 2024. Now, if someone is staying in Barcelona for seven nights, the new total tax amount will be €22.75 (around $24).

“It was the objective sought: to contain the number of tourists and increase tourist income because our model is no longer mass tourism but quality tourism, which adds value to the city,” deputy mayor Jaume Collboni said in March, according to Euronews .

The tax is added to a tourist’s accommodations bill when they stay at official tourist establishments in the city. The money goes toward enhancing the city’s infrastructure, such as improving roads.

Other popular European destinations, such as Amsterdam and Venice, also recently increased tourist taxes for similar reasons.

Are tourist taxes the future of travel? What to know about the increasing tourist fees worldwide.

“The new and increasing tourist fees across Europe allow cities to fund measures to attract more vacationers, support the local infrastructure and businesses, as well as preventing damages from overtourism,” Tiffany Mealiff, a travel insurance expert at Quotezone , said in a statement to USA TODAY.

However, Barcelona visitors have had to pay a regional tourist tax since 2012, according to Euronews . This tax amount depends on a traveler’s accommodation type, costing more if someone is staying at a luxury hotel than an Airbnb.

Barcelona continues to reign as Spain’s most popular tourist destination. In 2022, Barcelona welcomed 9.7 million tourists , just slightly below pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to the Barcelona City Council. However, tourists were found to be staying in the city longer than in 2019.

In 2022, the city also sought to cap the number of people in a tour group and ban megaphones by tour guides in an effort to curb the disruptive effects of overtourism.

Travelers planning their European getaway should be mindful of the additional costs that “are often not obvious beforehand,” according to Mealiff, as they plan their trip budgets.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Fighting 'intensifies in eastern Ukraine as troops fall back'; UK estimates 450,000 Russian losses since war began

Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi says his troops have taken up new positions west of Berdychi, Semenivka and Novomykhailivka in order to conserve their forces while armed forces minister Leo Docherty tells the UK Defence Journal tens of thousands have deserted Russian's military since February 2022.

That's all from our live coverage for tonight. For a reminder of today's updates, you can scroll back through this live blog.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine is still waiting for promised supplies from its allies, urging the international community to hurry up.

In his nightly video address today, he said: "We are expecting those volumes and scope that can change the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine's interests."

He also said he had spoken with US House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, and had thanked Congress for passing the long-awaited aid package for Ukraine.

"In my conversation with Mr Jeffries, I underscored that Patriot systems are needed, and as soon as possible," he said.

Ukrainian forces are facing a worsening position in the east and are still awaiting the delivery of US weapons.

Mr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for more air defence systems to protect its citizens and infrastructure, particularly the Patriot systems.

Russia will start restricting those called up for military service from leaving the country, according to news site Meduza.

Electronic summonses will reportedly be sent out from 1 November.

Those who are called up will not be allowed to leave Russia, and they will face further restrictions if they do not go to a military registration and enlistment office within 20 days.

In that case, they will not be allowed to register to run a business, drive a car, take out loans, or conduct real estate transactions, Meduza said.

New satellite imagery appears to show damage at Russia's Kushchyovskaya military airbase in the Krasnodar region.

Planet Labs shared images comparing how the base looked on 19 March compared with today.

A source in Ukraine's security and defence forces earlier told Ukrainian media that Kyiv had launched drone strikes against the airbase and two oil refineries overnight.

They told the Kyiv Independent the SBU and Ukraine's Defence Forces hit the airbase where "dozens of military aircraft, radars, and electronic warfare devices were stationed".

Earlier we brought you news of a Russian drone strike on the Black Sea city of Mykolaiv.

The attack set a hotel ablaze and damaged energy infrastructure, Ukrainian officials said.

Vitaliy Kim, the governor of the southern Mykolaiv region, said in an update the attack had "seriously damaged" the hotel.

The strike also damaged heat-generating infrastructure in the city.

There were no casualties, he said.

A priest sprinkles holy water on believers holding willow branches during an Orthodox Palm Sunday service.

The service is being held in Donetsk, in an area occupied by Russian forces.

Russia gained full control of the city of Donetsk in October 2022, but the area has been a major site of fighting since 2014.

The majority of people in Ukraine are Orthodox Christian, although they follow different branches.

As we've been reporting, Russia has been pushing forward in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.

Ukrainian military officials say their troops are falling back to new positions in at least three places along the frontlines.

But they are facing public criticism about the transparency of their military updates.

Ukrainian military blogger Myroshnykov and Ukraine's DeepState monitoring group, which updates daily changes in frontline positions, both say the updates have been unrealistic.

DeepState shared a video on social media of a Russian soldier being killed in a drone strike in the village of Soloviove, arguing such footage was being used to mask a bigger picture.

"You can watch with pleasure forever the video of a Russian [soldier] being torn to pieces, but nearby there is another location that requires attention: Muscovites calmly moving around the village, keeping it under control.

"The [Ukrainian] Defence Forces inflict fire damage on them, and one can repeat at least a billion times that two-thirds of the village is under the control of the Ukrainian military, but the picture of reality is completely different."

It appeared to be referring to a statement from Nazar Voloshyn, a spokesperson for Ukraine's military in the east, who also said the nearby village of Ocheretyne was still two-thirds controlled by Ukraine.

However, DeepState says it believes Russian troops have been in control of the centre of Ocheretyne for at least three days.

The site accused some military spokespersons of incompetence last week.

Police have arrested a 57-year-old Russian on suspicion of murder following the killings yesterday evening, German news agency dpa reported.

The two Ukrainians were 23 and 36 years old, and lived in the southern German county of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

They were killed at a shopping centre in the village of Murnau in Upper Bavaria.

The names of the victims and suspect have not been released due to German privacy rules.

It is not clear if the men knew each other.

More than one million Ukrainian refugees fled to Germany following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Donald Trump's stance on Ukraine is "not as black and white as some people think", the Polish foreign minister has said.

The former US president, who is running for election again this year, has said he will not commit to providing Ukraine with defence assistance.

Republicans aligned with Mr Trump were also the reason behind a six-month delay to aid for Ukraine.

But foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in an interview with the Axel Springer media company that Mr Trump had sent Ukraine anti-tank missiles before Russia's invasion "when others were not doing it".

He was referring to Javelin anti-tank missiles supplied by the US in 2018.

Mr Sikorski also said Mr Trump was "right in urging us all in Europe to spend more on defence".

He said he "did not hear any protests from Trump" once the $61bn aid package for Ukraine was approved.

"So, I hope that candidate Trump has seen that this opposition to helping Ukraine is not actually popular in the United States, that it is harming his chances [to be re-elected]," he added.

Earlier we reported that a top Ukrainian general said troops had fallen back from three villages in the east of the country.

We can now bring you more from Oleksandr Syrskyi, the chief of Ukraine's armed forces, about the situation on the ground.

Mr Syrskyi said the Donetsk region (in the east) remains one of the hottest sectors of the frontline as Russia continues its offensive.

He described the situation in the eastern cities of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove as "the most difficult one" now.

Russia is reportedly using up to four brigades (anywhere from an estimated 8,000 to 32,000 personnel) to conduct assault operations in the direction of both the cities, which lie west of Avdiivka, which was captured earlier this year.

Mr Syrskyi said the situation is changing "dynamically" on the frontline as a result.

Meanwhile, Mr Syrskyi said the situation in the south also remains "intense" as Russia tries to advance near the village of Krynky in Kherson.

It also wants to advance towards the villages of Robotyne and Verbove villages in Zaporizhzhia.
