Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc bikes are popular thanks to their affordable price and riding comfort. They retail for $599 and $699, respectively (in 2023).

They are available in multiple sizes (FX 1: S-XL, FX 1 Disc: XS-XXL), pleasing many riders.

You can also choose from two colors that change with each new generation. Trek also usually equips them with slightly modified components every year.

Another great news, especially for women, is that Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc are available as step-through options, making it easier to get on.

Main Features of Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc

Let’s now dive deeper into Trek’s FX 1 and FX 1 Disc components so you better understand their value.

Aluminum Frame

One of the main features of every bike is its frame. All Treks FX 1 and FX 1 Disc were based on an aluminum frame.

Aluminum frames are durable, reasonably lightweight, and affordable. That’s why aluminum is still one of the most popular bike frame materials .

Their fork is made of steel, though. This means a weight increase and a little worse aesthetics as the fork doesn’t match the rest of the bike. But, function-wise, you can rely on it.

The geometry of FX bikes is a bit more aggressive than other hybrid bikes for around $500 but still relaxed enough for an upright riding position.

This means you won’t experience back pain after long rides, and you don’t need to be as flexible as you would on high-performance road bikes, for example.

700c Wheels

Trek FX 1 and FX 1 Disc have 700c wheels that are standard on hybrid and road bikes.

They come with 35mm hybrid tires, ensuring you can ride fast on paved roads, but they won’t puncture once you enter gravel.

These tires are one of the main reasons these bikes are so versatile. Of course, we are not talking about an MTB-like terrain but rather a compromise between road and gravel biking .

Trek FX bikes come with Shimano and Tektro components (drivetrain and brakes). The 3X drivetrain is one of the main weaknesses of these bikes. I know you will have more gears, but let me explain.

From my experience, most people often don’t know how to shift properly and often encounter cross-chaining.

That’s why I believe 2X and 1X drivetrains are better for beginners and less experienced riders.

They are simpler to use and maintain. Furthermore, they are lighter. 3X drivetrains are too complicated.

Other components, like the saddle, seatpost, handlebar, stem, etc., were made by Trek’s brand Bontrager.

The 3×7spd drivetrain on FX 1 offers 21 gears, and FX 1 Disc has 3×8spd (24). That’s a lot. I have 22 on my road bike ( modern road bikes have 24).

The gear ratios (i.e., the gears’ difficulty) range from easy gears suitable for steep climbs up to hard gears for fast descents.

Remember, FX 1 and FX 1 Disc gear ratios are slightly different. But you should be fine with both whether you live in a flat or hilly area.

Trek FX bikes come with a couple of extra features that are worth mentioning. First, they have ergonomic grips that reduce pressure on your palms. So, even if you ride without gloves, your hands won’t get sore.

Furthermore, FX bikes are compatible with the DuoTrap sensor. While not included with the bike, if you decide to get it, it will measure your cadence, speed, and distance ridden.

Of course, these bikes are also designed to be compatible with fenders, stands, and racks to increase your storage capacity.

I have a 2024 v brake trek fx1 and i love it. Its probably the best bike I’ve ever had. Don’t like the mechanic at the shop I bought it from but I’ll definitely buy another trek bike if I could ever afford it. This thing glides. Love it. Somehow my rear v brake is spongy right after a break in adjustment and brake tune. Still figuring that out.

Trek alpha sizing for MTB – what is it?

The old-school approach of measuring the frame size of Trek bikes is a thing of the past. With newer inventions and modern bike geometry, alpha sizing is used in place of numeric sizing on Trek mountain bikes.

Why is alpha sizing important?

1. Easier approach

Instead of using size numbers like 19.5, the sizes can be classified into S, M, ML, L, XL, and XXL. So, someone with a 17.5 size can go for the medium and a 19.5 is a large size. You don’t have to keep a tab on numbers; instead, the alphabet makes it easier.

2. Measurement based on reach

In earlier times the frame size measurement of Trek bikes was solely based on seat tube length. Things have changed, and modern mountain bike geometry focuses more on reach as of now. Hence, alpha sizing measures what matters and is a more simplified way of measuring bike size.

Trek sizing – virtual vs actual

This can puzzle you a bit as they both are somewhat similar yet there is a subtle difference. Actual size can be termed as the overall length of the seat tube from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the top tube intersection with the centerline of the seat tube.

On the other hand, virtual sizing is the overall length of the seat tube ranging from the center of the bottom bracket to the mid-point of the imaginary horizontal top tube in which it connects with the seat tube.

If I had to give you an example, a bike might have a virtual size of 18.5 and an actual size of 17.5. This means that the bike size feels like 18.5, but in actual sense, the frame size is 17.5. It doesn’t make much of a difference as it is there only to let you know what it is (actual size) and what it looks like in size (virtual size).

This is a 2012 FX 7.7 . Love the color . Very comfortable bike to ride . I am a 70 year old Snowbird that spends the winters in Tucson Az . Handles the climbs & rolling hills in Tucson Az The Shimano 105 components are well suited for this smooth riding bike . Fast , light & handles very well. The IsoZone Monostays absorbs the road bumps nicely as advertized. I put Schwalbe Ultrimo 28cc tires on for more comfort , they are slick & enhance the appearance & are fast . Also swapped out the pedals for Shimano Duro Ace . I have no more numbness in the hands with the Ergo Grips. I ride about 100KMS a week & wanted a fast comfortable flat bar , & this is it . In my opinion this bike is well worth the $.

Frame is very light without being too stiff for long rides. Great components. 105 crank, cassette, and front dérailleur. Ultegra rear dérailleur. Handles very well.

I wish it had better brakes (e.g. XT instead of M431, or disc brakes would be nice too). When I put on my front brake while going downhill, the whole bike shakes. This doesn't happen with the rear brake. The 24-spoke wheels, while fast and light, do not seem very strong. My front wheel went out of true after hitting a pothole and I had to spend some time truing it back up. By contrast, my 36-spoke touring wheels on my Cannondale have never gone out of true despite taking far more abuse.

Bought the 2008 7.7 FX three months ago at the LBS for 1200 euros (about $1750) primarily for commuting to work 40 km/day. I actually wanted the Trek Portland, but they don't sell them outside the U.S., so I settled for the FX instead. At first, I was not too excited about the style. In fact, I thought it looked rather ugly. However, it had everything I needed to make it a worthy commuter and good hybrids are hard to find around here (most bike shops here only carry high-end road or mountain bikes with nothing in-between). I've since put 1600km (about 1000 miles) on the bike and I must say that I'm very pleased with it. It handles beautifully... smooth and fast. It's such a joy to ride that I even look forward to my commute in sub-zero temperatures. The bike weighs just under 10kg (about 22 lbs), so it's quite light for a hybrid.

First hybrid I've owned, although I've ridden road, mountain, and touring bikes for years.

Fantastic ride on pavement. I'm looking forward to testing it out on crushed limestone bike paths. I switched from 700 x 28 to 700 x32 tires to accomodate the trails better. My wife received her 7.7 a few months before me and was kicking my but on the trails. On the paved roads, I'm able to take the lead again and set a good pace. The components on this bike are incredible. It's also incredibly light in comparison to the hybids. Great bike for the money if you plan on doing lots of riding.

May want to avoid bike paths/trails that are too rough. This bike is more responsive/delicate than the hybids.

I received my new 2009 Trek FX 7.7 about a month ago and am absolutely thrilled with it. My wife has the same bike only the 2007 model. She has had her bike since September of 2008. Prior to the FX bikes, we both had Trek 7300 hybrids. Most our riding has been on crushed limestone and some paved bike trails. The Fx 7.7 is by far more efficient than the 7300 hybids (great climber, quicker acceleration and faster cruising speed). We will be planning some longer trips this spring summer and fall.

My wife and I moved up from the Trek 7300 hybrids to the FX 7.7 to icrease our ride efficiency. We are both over 50 and wanted to stay with a flat bar bike that could keep up with the road bikes and still negotiate bike paths that were decent condition.

The Shimno 105/Utegra setup provides for smoother shifting than the other fx bikes I've used. I like the 27 speed triple crank for its versitality as I live in a hilly area.

Glad I replaced my seat. Not necessarily a weakness but I replaced my 32cm tires for 25cm and notices the speed increase. If I tour with this bike, I'll use the 32cm tires.

I love this bike. I use it for exercise and for occassional commuting. At the same time I credibly hold my own among the race bikes during my weekly Rose Bowl laps. Buzz kill elastomers and carbon forks and seat post really dampen vibration. As I'm an older guy my flat bars don't produce any neck strain. If you want a reasonably fast but comfotable bike for fitness, this is the one.

Trek 7.2fx, 7.5fx,

Just a great overall Hybrid. Light, responsive, good on hills. Forgiving on off pavement.

Low on top end speed

Over 2000 miles ridden last year. Have noticed them on sale at the $1000 mark for left over new models in Jan/08.
